Hidden gem of highland ... The lunch specials are such a deal and taste fantastic every time .
Not sure how this place got such good reviews--maybe the dinners are much better than the lunch specials, but I was unfortunately disappointed. I stopped in for lunch while in town for business and ordered a $5.99 lunch special, the server recommend the Yu Shan chicken. It came with two crab Rangoon, white or fried rice, and soup. I ordered the hot & sour for my soup, and it was way too much on the sour side--too much vinegar. The few vegetables that it has were too translucent as well--a sign that I probably don't want to know when it was made. The chicken came in a ginger sauce that was actually pretty tasty, but was overshadowed by semi-fresh veggies. The white rice was fine, as were the Rangoon, but they could increase the temp of the frying oil a bit as they were on the oily side. A textbook example of far-eastern "fast-food" passed off on the gwai-lo (that's us Yankees) as Chinese cuisine.
Still the best!! I no longer eat at any other Chinese place. Their hot and sour soup is the standard by which I judge all other restaurant soups. They are afraid to spice it up, but they are generous with the chilli oil on the side and it adds all the bite you could ask for!!

The sauce is WAY too sweet for me. However, I do like the spicy tomato sauce pasta on the buffet during lunch. The salad bar is quite lacking, though, and difficult to maneuver with the way it is arranged. It's very inefficient, and there's always a backup in the line there. I prefer Sam's Pizza by far!
I'm giving it 5 stars. Only place I know of downstate that you can get a true Chicago style pizza. Wait staff is always super nice and I think most of them are family.
Great homade thin crust pizza Listed twice on yelp Don't know why...

SAMs pizza is a place that competes with the best pizza joints around. Great staff, and outstanding food. This could be a bar for a night out with the guys or a place to bring the whole family. I love it here.
Excellent as always. Friendly staff, good food, great company. Tvs and good conversation. Treated me to a free drink for my birthday. Try the mushroom pepperoni and bacon St. Louis style pizza. It's the bomb diggity .com÷
Wood floors make this place exceptionally loud. You can not hear your self think. The service is lackadaisical. Many little towns have small pizza joints in Southern Illinois. This is one of those. Most of the the pizza is solidly average. The bacon was terribly salty. The sausage mushroom pizza was really pretty good. The salad was amazingly fresh and although the salad dressing offered was ranch. It tasted homemade or of very good quality if bought. The cheese sticks were really good as was the t ravs. The wings were also tasty but only mild. If they can bring the heat they may have some good wings? All in all probably a 2.5, I do not know that the food will bring me back to deal with the service.

I will say that they lure you in well with the "Featured on Food Network" billboard. My wife and I decided to give it a try. We walked in and with no one else waiting to be seated, the manager asks us how many, and we let them know 4 kids and 2 adults. I watched as she got the table ready and proceeded to talk with the regulars, only when she was done with the personal chit chat did she ask us to sit, about 3 mins, not a horrible deal but after driving cross country it was a little magnified. The food was food family style where you select an entree off the menu on the wall, and the server brings cole slaw, beets, and biscuits with Apple butter. We waited 15 mins for the server to get our drink orders, and it was busy and she apologized. She came back quick with our drinks and took our food orders. At this time the table next to us was seated, and there server asks if they would like to reserve some pie. I found it odd to reserve it before the meal, but figured it being Saturday night and they seemed to be locals, he called them by their names, so I thought he knew their ordering habits. Our server visited our table three more times and never mentioned it. When it was time to order desert they were out of every pie flavor, at 730 PM. They close at 9, so while I didn't fault her for the cook being short, I did fault my server for not asking up front after we told her it was our first time eating there. Bottom line is walk in before dinner and order the pie, of not you may miss out! Also we asked the sever for crayons and paper to which she said sure, and proceeded not to bring at all even after I reminded her. Get the pie to geaux!
Yelp has the location wrong! Address is right but it maps you to a home 3.7 miles away! But don't let that stop you from going. The walleye is fantastic and the pies might not be a foot high but they sure come close. All meals come with pickled beets, cole slaw, mashed potatoes and gravy and green beans. Plus biscuits and apple butter. Too much food for one!
For a home cooked style meal this place was phenomenal! Saturday night they have an all you can eat buffet line with prime rib and everything else they run on the normal menu for 15 bucks. What great way to give everything a try. Plan on repeating for sure. I normally wouldn't think this type of restaurant as being five stars but for price and everything home cooked I'm saying 5! Also they are cash and check only but do have an ATM in the building.

Serve everything on paper and the steel tray, This was a great place to eat when it was Farmers. Hate the new concept
Much like their sister restaurant in Troy (Fire-N-Smoke), you order at the counter (an array of bottled beverages fill coolers lining the wall behind the register, fountain soda and tea also available) and take a seat. The line system works better at this location. The menu is a mix of Fire N Smoke and the former Outlaw Blues in O'Fallon (which I miss - I'd love to see the return of the biscuit and cornbread skillet). We had the chicken and waffles, which came with two sides. The sides really shine here, and the entree was quality as well. Under $30 with two beverages and a slice of Smores pie.
I am not sure why this place has gotten bad reviews. It is a cozy clean place. Friendly service. The restaurant was busy but we did not wait too long for our meals. We all enjoyed our food and we needed to-go boxes. The BBQ pork was tender. The beef tips with onions and mushrooms was very flavorful. The sides were good, I really liked the mac-n-cheese. We grabbed dessert to go! Do not let the bad reviews deter you from going here. We will definitely go back.
