My husband and I are also from Southern California, and I have to disagree with the previous CA poster who gave this place 1 star. First of all, we came here because it was conveniently located near our doctor's office. It was easy to find, park and the place was immaculate inside. The waitress was the most friendly I've experienced since moving to Chicago 8 months ago. We ordered tacos (chicken, carne, and stuffed pepper). Chips and salsa were great (albeit lacking some heat) and the food was fresh and delicious. For us, it was pretty darn close to the real thing we are used to but without so much grease, which was great! If we have to venture to Gurnee again for anything we will definitely eat here again. (PS I would've given 5 stars if they offered margaritas and churros :))

Went here for the first time tonight with my family. The service was great and the food came quickly. I tried a steak taco, ground beef taco and a ground beef tostada. The steak was a bit bland but the ground beef was loaded with flavor! The tostada was by far the best I've ever had! My husband got some various quesadillas and they were bursting with flavor as well. I will definitely be back!

Great service and good food. I was grabbing some bagels at store in the same plaza and I was curious to see a Mexican restaurant so I tried and liked it. It was not busy at all but I came in at three. I ordered and a short wait later I got my food and I liked it. I'll go back to get breakfast.

This is one of the best mexican restaurants in the area. The food is outstanding and the service is fast and friendly. I love their salsa and green sauce. The BBQ pork in tacos and tostadas is delicious. We come here for lunch at least once a week. We have eaten here multiple times since they opened and we have never had a bad meal.

I have been coming here several times over the last year and I have yet to be disappointed. Good prices, tasty food, and very quick service. Every dish has been exceptional. Small family run restaurants typically are run with passion, unlike many franchises...IMO. Just had the burrito suizo, mmmmm...good!

Here's a few things to consider before you read my review: 1. Have not been a huge fan of Mexican food (don't love it, don't hate it) 2. Don't like corn tortillas Last time I had legit Mexican food was in central Mexico three years ago. Since then, I had long forgotten the taste of a good taco..lets just say I have been reconverted I got the pork tamales and a chicken taco. The tacos are roughly the size of one's palm. The tamales about the size of a hand (in length). If you come with a hungry stomach, you need more than one taco and tamales. I don't know how they get that sour cream, meat, and vegetable ratio just right, but they do it, and it's a warm explosion of flavors in your taste buds. The restaurant is small but clean. If you're in the area, just come; they made corn tortillas work for me.

I'd say good Tex-Mex food. The menu is just as expected. The restaurant is well run and our server was on top of taking the order promptly, explaining the hot sauce was atomic (it is) and getting things right. The food is 'right-on' as is the service.

This little restaurant hidden off in a small strip Mall west of Rt 41 and north of Washington St Is absolutely fantastic. The burrito was the best And their hot sauce is fantastic and hot!! Loved It. Will go back.

Located in a small plaza, this place is pretty delicious! The dining area is clean. There's no greasy smell or sticky tables and chairs. I always get a little grossed out when I'm walking into a restaurant and I can just see how little the tables has been cleaned. It makes me wonder how dirty the kitchen is. We ordered tacos ( chicken and bbq pork), chicken and cheese quesadilla, and steak tostadas. $12 ish. I really like the tacos I ordered. The chicken was very flavorful, shredded and easy to eat (as in, when you take bites, no big chunks of chicken come flying out of your taco). The taco was topped with shredded lettuce and tomato. The bbq pork was a tiny bit spicy for me. But it was filled with meat, shredded lettuce and diced onions. I opted out from cilantro and added some lime juice on both tacos. I gotta admit, it was pretty delicious!! My favorite out of the both is the chicken. My boyfriends quesadilla and steak tostadas was good as well. The quesadilla got a small crunch in them but the inside was still cheesy and soft. I could easily eat two of them. The steak tostada reminded me of my taco except it is flat and not folded. The crispness from the shell on the tostada complimented the sour cream, cheese and steak. What I didn't like was how salty the steak and shell was. I felt like I was eating chunks of salt. No Bueno :( I had to eat it with some white rice to balance the salt. I love how their food isn't overly greasy and it doesn't have a bad after taste after eating it. (The bad oil / fried taste...) All the items we ordered tasted fresh. If you're craving for Mexican food, I would recommend this place! I'm not a huge fan of Mexican food but this place makes me want to come back and try more of the items on their menu.

I ate here twice last week with coworkers. The first day I had chicken tacos. They were good. The green sauce is delicious- the orange was good, too, but I could bathe in the green sauce. The second day I had the nacho platter. It was good, too. I didn't like the fact that if you wanted extra chips and salsa, you had to pay for a second basket. No other Mexican restaurant in the area does this. But, overall, it was yummy.

This place is a goldmine! The BEST burrito I've ever had! Tons of lengua, beans, cheese, avocado, lettuce and tomato...topped with a super spicy sauce and melty cheese. It came with rice (incredible) and beans (meh). Horchata was fresh and the whole place is clean. Don't be put off by the strip mall location, this is a contender of any sitdown Mexican restaurant around. I will definitely be back for more!

GURNEE GEM We drove by and noticed this cute little restaurant from the road so we decided to check it out on Yelp and were amazed with the great reviews. We decided to bookmark it and return on our next trip through the area. Fast forward to that day... We had just finished at Six Flags and we were looking for food. Luckily our bookmark was waving at us when we opened the Yelp app. When we walked in we found that half of the tables were taken which is a great sign. I also loved at how clean the restaurant was. A nice young man took us to our table. I could tell that he was probably one of the children of the owners. It's a different feel when a young kid is working at a place that they don't care about. This kid actually had a great heart and no teenage attitude. I decided to order the Steak Burrito Suizo. I asked for the hottest sauce on top and they didn't disappoint me. Wow was it spicy but delicious. I think I shocked the family who owns this place because I loved it. They probably thought I couldn't handle it. I'm trained in taking the heat. Eight years ago I would have probably crawled into a corner to die after eating this but not anymore. The young boy checked on me a couple of times. I think he was impressed with how I took down the spicy burrito beast and was still alive. We also got just a regular steak burrito not covered in cheese and sauce. Which was tasty but I was in such love with my choice nothing else would have tasted good to me. We also orders a kids meal which was a deal at only $3.99. It included an enchilada, rice, beans & a juice box. Score! I am also so lucky that my little one eats everything except for spicy but she does give it a try followed by a glass of water. She wants to eat spicy so bad like us. I just keep telling her in time she will get use to it. Before we left we went back by the kitchen and spoke with Jesus the owner. He was such a great guy. I had to tell him how much I loved the spicy sauce. He then showed me all of the different kind of salsas he had. I had so much fun talking food with him. I even shared some of my salsas I make at home with him. I learned that his place is a family affair and I love to hear that. I grew up in a family business so I get it. You work hard together and it pays the bills and gives the family a shot at a better tomorrow. It is amazing how successful Jesus has been and he never has taken out advertising yet. Word of mouth can still drive a business as long as you keep delivering quality food with great service. I can hardly wait to come back here. If you visit Six Flags or go shopping at Gurnee Mills then take a drive over here for some fantastic food. You will be glad you did. Don't eat that overpriced & fake food in the park. Come here and get some real food. I am just wondering how a spicy burrito and a 87 degree vertical roller coaster drop mix. Well I'm willing to try it in the name of Science. Bring it on.

Had high hopes after reading the reviews and headed over! Pretty small mom and pop place, friendly, about 8 tables and looks to be mostly servicing to go orders. We ordered a pretty large order to have a sampling of items, from the tongue taco, to the quesadilla, along with the flank steak fajitas and a chimichanga. The quesadilla cheese was not really hot or pully, the taco was okay.... chimichanga had the burrito suiza sauce on it instead of guacamole (per my request) and it was too hot to eat. Point of reference, I think sriracha is waaaay mild, so I'm not a spice sissy. This was like, eye watering, taste bud burning sauce. The inside had carnitas (pork) and it was grisly and not to my liking. Not sure if we'd be back.... darn it...

I was in the woods on work and went in for a late afternoon meal. The lunch special taco was $4:99 unheard of in the city of Chicago :). Horchata one of the best ever and lupe the server was very curteous. Open kitchen, only negative is the restrooms are past the kitchen pantry. Overall good service, tasty food and excellent service.

I happened upon this place a month ago while looking for new restaurants on yelp. I am so pleasantly pleased with this place. The food is phenomenal and authentic. I ordered three tacos with rice and beans with a drink all under ten bucks. The food has taken less than 7 minutes both times I've ordered. The tacos are flavorful and quote delicious. Rice and beans are authentic and are delicious. I want to try other food but I can't stray from my usual.

My husband and I went last night and loved it. Service was great and very friendly. We had the guacamole which was fabulous, and the meat quesadilla was very good. Hot sauce was so yummy and so hot! Place was very clean, but also very casual...no alcohol but an awesome choice for Mexican food if u want a quick, tasty meal at extremely reasonable prices. Will definitely go again!

My boyfriend and I have lunch here ones in a while and it's our best mexican restaurant in gurnee. The burritos, tacos, and tortas are my fav. Only bad thing I can say is that I wish they had beer. Or some margaritas would be good too:)

    (4)
  • Linda C.

Amazing! My burrito suizo was so flavorful inside and out. Fluffy Spanish rice and garlicky refried beans. Significant other loved his chimichanga. Only slight disappoint were the chips and salsa, which tasted more like taco sauce.

    (5)
  • Doug B.

Excellent!!!!! Chips & salsa to start you off. The chips are the thinner style - our favorite. My wife ordered the chimichanga & raved about all the while. I had steak tacos & a tamale. They were fantastic also. No frills dining. Great service. Great price.

I just ate here today for the first time, and will definitely be back! Excellent food, great service, and decent prices. Staff was immediate in waiting on me, the food came quickly. Everything was fantastic, I had the taco salad. They served chips and salsa as well and brought to the table a couple of sauces to try on the salad as well. I was able to enjoy a great lunch and had plenty of time to get back to work without rushing. The place was busy, but I was able to get a seat right away, and there was no waiting for anything. Very positive experience!

I am a total sucker for a mom and pop's restaurant especially when the ENTIRE family is involved!! Yep. Dad cooks. The oldest son is the host/waiter, mom does the dishes and the sweet little girl is watching and learning in the corner in between playing. I fell in love instantaneously!! The food tasted amazing and everything was homemade. This place is perfection for me. Prices are right on with kids meals priced at $3.99 and entrees will run you around 7-8$. Try it! I promise you will love it too!!

  • Alex M.

Not sure why the 5 star reviews. We tried it on a slow rainy Friday evening. Salsa was good. Chorizo taco was good. Chicken Enchiladas were above average. Now for the steak. It was diced very small with more fat and gristle than edible meat. The burrito was small compared to competitors. Drop $30 + and left hungry. This is a one and done place for me...

Saw the reviews, thought I would try it. It is Saturday at 7pm and they are closed. Wasted my time and my hungry family is not amused.

Very nice little place. Kind of hidden, but if you can find it (across the street from the big Tower Court medical building) it's definitely with it. The steak burrito I got, tasted great and the carne asada plate my wife got was great as well. A lot of mexican restaurants or taco joints have fatty chunks in their steak meat, which I hate, and I never had to spit any of those nasty chunky rubbery pieces out as I never had any in my burrito. Can't wait to go back when I need my taco fix!

Tacos el Durango has my favorite authentic Mexican tacos in Lake County, hands down. Great staff. No frills. Salsas are on point too.

Fantastic good. Burrito Suizo has such a delicious sauce on it. Shredded chicken on tacos has so much flavor. A lot of food for the price.

I am so happy my fiance and I decided to come stop in here on a whim to give it a try. We just moved from Southern California - where authentic Mexican food can be found everywhere. Since moving to IL, we tried many places and just could never find a Mexican restaurant quite as close to the kind we got in SoCal. After eating here, we finally found a great Mexican restaurant just like back in CA. First thing you'll notice is that is the place is spotless. Seriously, its clean all around and one of the cleanest restaurants i've ever stepped foot in. We were served by a lady (possibly one of the owners), who was very nice. One of the best service experiences i've seen in a small restaurant like this. The food was excellent. if you eat there they bring out a small basket of chips and salsa (enough for two to snack on) which were good. We ordered a burrito suizo (which is basically a burrito topped with melted cheese) and the nachos. It was absolutely delicious. The burritos even come with beans and rice on the side, which I find a lot of places in IL don't offer. I will definitely come back here. In fact, this might be the only Mexican restaurant i'll ever visit in the area. I love to support local businesses like this that dish out delicious food and service at a good price. I highly recommend you give this place a try, especially if you're in the food mood for an epic Mexican meal. P.S. It's great for Vegetarians too. The woman that served us mentioned that almost anything could be made Vegetarian if requested.

  • Kelsey L.

Great place! Really enjoyed the burrito, and just had to get extra chips and salsa because it was so tasty. Some of the freshest Mexican food I've had, and for sure the place is cleaner than most restaurants in general. Will definitely be back!

This is my new favorite Mexican restaurant, hands down. The staff is very friendly and the burritos are to die for!

  • Ian W.

Never disappointed! There are so many great things to say about this place, but I will start with the food I have had here: Tacos, Chilaquiles, Chile Rellenos, Carne Asada, Huevos Rancheros, and a few other dinner dishes. The meat is always flavored well and very succulent; while the rice and beans leave nothing to be desired. Moving along; service is an important facet of any restaurant experience, even in places most would consider a dive. El Durango has friendly and humble staff (family, mostly), who are surprisingly quick with their turnaround (some food may be prepared up to 30 min before rush hours but I have never noticed anything being less than perfectly fresh) and even going as far as remembering your "standard" order if you have been a repeat customer. The location and size could potentially be small gripes, but they have never hindered my experience. There are a few seating options outside as a bonus, and I have never had to wait to be seated. I worry that as the word spreads and their advertising grows, the space will soon wear thin as the food is exceptional and the price point comes in under par with gratuitous portion sizes. Monday will mark my 10th time at this restaurant after having discovered it only 2 months ago. Can't wait, nor should you!

  • Avi H.

It's not big but don't let that fool you. This place is awesome. The chips are thick and crunchy. The corn tortilla tacos I had were chicken and I also had beef. The salsa was great and I think home made. U will not regret it!

    (5)
  • John P.

The chips and salsa were really good. Quacamole was very good with a little onion flavor. I had the steak Durango and my daughters had enchilada dinner and the kids cheese quesadilla and rice and beans. Everything was very good. Clean place and friendly staff. Found our new local mexican joint.

  • Ben U.

Wow.... Found this place thru yelp. The reviews are correct! Very good food. I had the chicken burrito suizo with the hot red sauce, it was great. Most mexican resturaunts don't have flavorful chicken but this was tasty. I've told friends about El Durango and they had the steak chimis and tacos and loved em. Not a fan of the rice but the beans are fantastic. It's also nice to support a mom and pop place, very clean. I will be back.

Second time here what's for dinner this time for breakfast. Fantastic rice and beans love the green sauce in the bottle can eat just that with chips excellent flavor. Wife at the chicken I had pork both were out of this world juicy and well seasoned. Very reasonable prices and from a family ran business, well worth giving them a try.

Very clean restaurant, attentive service and appears to be family owned and serviced. Limited vegetarian options; however, they adjusted menu items to satisfy our diet with no hesitation. Food had fantastic flavor with the refried beans being extra special. We are so glad we stumbled across this little gem. Come support this hidden diamond , you will not be disappointed!

We came to Gurnee from the city to shop and were looking for a Mexican food for dinner. Found this place on Yelp and decided to give it a try. It's definitely no frills, but the food and service make up for it. This is obviously a family run restaurant - and the family takes pride in what they are doing. Would definitely go again!

  • Paul N.

Thanks Yelp reviewers for steering us here. Headed somewhere else for Mexican in Gurnee but saw the reviews. I am not sure it deserves 5 stars but it is a good solid 4 based on value, quantity and service. We had the Burrito Suizzo and the Chimichanga. Both good size and priced reasonably. Good service and a very friendly waiter who checked a couple of times on how things were. One bit of caution if you order the hot sauce on the Burrito be prepared. Wife had enough left order to get a second meal out of hers. You have to search for this location as it is in the office park area of Gurnee just off 41. We will definitely be back.

My boyfriend and I were trying to decide where to have dinner. He asked me what I was in the mood for and I said Mexican. We found this place on yelp and it had a lot of good reviews so we figured we would try it out. We were not disappointed. The food was really good, did not take long to prepare, and the prices were reasonable. The restaurant was also very clean. We went for an early dinner so we were the only ones in there which was a little weird. The only thing I would say would turn people away is that it's not in a really good area. It's kind of tucked away from all of the other businesses but I do not think it should stop anyone from trying it. I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a place to get good Mexican food.

  • Randy M.

Really enjoyed the laid back atmosphere. The food was good and reasonable in price. They didn't have fried ice cream which discouraging for my daughter as she picked the place for her birthday dinner. All in all though food had authentic flavor it was clean but is more of a lunch and to go place though.

This place is awesome. Its a small family run restaurant. The service was friendly and fast. The food was excellent! Delicious beans and rice, the large portion is a plus. 10/10 I would come back.

Oh my gawd! Where to begin! I've eaten here a ton of times since my boyfriend moved out here. They have the BEST Chimichangas ever! The place looks a bit run down on the outside with barely anyone around. Creeepy! BUT upon further inspection there was like four cops eating in there!! Always a good sign! AND they accept credit cards! I'm sold! El Famous burrito only takes cash which can be a bummer when your running low! BUT back to El Durango! The guac was fresh and the refried beans were delish! I love beans recently and they really hit the spot! I like that they can make the tacos minus cilatro which I appreciate. No stink eye when I ask for it the 'american' way. I'm sure we'll be here plenty more times! I dream of that Chimichanga lol! Perfectly fried with a side of guac! Mmmm delish!

Stopped in here Saturday night (06/29), looking for a new local Mexican spot. I went with a friend, and the first thing we noticed was that the place was spotlessly clean and bright. The second thing was the politeness of the staff. We were asked about drinks, and they brought me a huge cup of Horchata per my request. Chips and a very nice salsa were brought without having to ask for them. We ordered guacamole as an appetizer. It was also excellent. Quite fresh and flavorful. I ordered Carne Asada, and my guest ordered Chicken in Mole Sauce. Both dishes were to die for. Flan brought up the tail end of our dinner, and it was the best I've eaten. I should note that although, based on our dishes, I listed the price range as Moderate, if you stuck to things like tacos, burritos, and the like, you would be in the Cheap eats category. The price I paid was well worth the experience, and I will be back, rest assured on that!

Very good food!! I've tried several other Mexican places around here and this is the only place with good, authentic flavor! The restaurant itself is pretty small but very clean.

We have found our new favorite Mexican restaurant! The place is super clean and the young woman at the counter was so sweet. Now the food: We ordered chicken, steak and ground beef tacos (added cheese & avocado to each for an additional .50 per taco) as well as a homemade tamale all to go. The food was delicious with excellent flavor and just the right amount of heat. We were stuffed, but didn't want to stop eating. They have been there for 10 months; their prices are very reasonable and even though we rarely eat in at restaurants, this is one I would like to try. I know there are so many Mexican places around, but if you haven't tried this one I would highly recommend it. We will be back....maybe tomorrow since she mentioned a breakfast burrito special between 9-11am. Yum.

We tried this place other night and was really impressed. We were immediately greeted with a warm smile and showed to a table. It is really small, smaller than I expected maybe a dozen tables or less but immaculately CLEAN.. Server brought out fresh chips and salsa, salsa was a little mild but very flavorful. Honestly would rather be too mild than too hot, we also order guacamole that was extremely creamy.. Main courses didn't disappoint.. I had the flank steak, was thin but very good and the wife had the enchilada with green sauce that was as good as mine if not better.. Owner was friendly and came out of the kitchen to say hello and check on us, something we always appreciate.. I think the bill for the two of us was less than $25, so very budget friendly. I think we found a new favorite Mexican place, looking forward to some steak tacos...

Really horrible service attitude. When I ordered fries they gave rice with no apologies at all. The food was okay, won't come again.

This is one of my favorite Mexican Food spots in the area. I have tried many of the dishes in the menu and have yet to be disappointed! My favorites have to be the mole durango, chicken quesadillas, and the chimichanga in ranchero sauce. Their horchata is also very good! I definitely recommend this place, you will not be disappointed!

The décor is not much to look at but the place is clean, the food is very good, and the service is friendly and prompt. My wife and I tried El Durango for the first time this week. The place was very quiet...there were only a few other tables occupied. The server was incredibly friendly and attentive. The food was very good. You can tell that they make their own refried beans, guacamole, salsa, etc. I ordered a burrito with their hot sauce on it and I will say that it had some heat to it. So, if you are looking for a nice little Mexican place with good home-style fresh made food, this is worth a try.

Just discovered this place a month ago and have been here four times now. Awesome food - the chimichanga and chilaquiles were awesome. The location itself is smaller and has never been full when I visited but the food did not disappoint. Just doesn't seem like a place for a big family sit down meal. Would definitely going any time I had a taste for Mexican food.

My wife told me she stopped at El Durnango for lunch and thought it was pretty good. When my wife says a mexican place is "pretty good" I have to take it seriously as she is pretty critical. I tried it out for lunch today and I have to say, it is the best mexican restaurant in the area, period. I have tried them all in the Gurnee area and have always been disappointed in the bland, tasteless, under seasoned...steam table mexican fare. Not El Durango though!! Tried the steak taco and chorizo taco. Both were perfect mexican "street style" tacos, small, well filled with perfectly bold flavored fillings, spicy but not too spicy, crisp lettuce, cilantro, onion and tomato (the tomato was nothing special as is always the case, so i pulled it off). And they take it up a notch by giving you a small wedge of lime to squeeze over the top, brightening the flavors even more. There taco's really reminded me of the great street tacos we got while vacationing in New Mexico last year. I also got a red pork tamale (the only type they offer). I use tamales as my test on mexican food quality. Often they are dry, flavorless with too little filling and too much tamale dough. Not these tamales! They are obviously home made, full of very moist red chili pork and moist tamale dough. Really, really good!! While I was there a sizzling plate of fajitas went by to another table and they smelled wonderful. I will be going back very soon to try those and some flan. As others have mentioned, the place is spotless and the service if very good. I highly recommend El Durango to anyone looking for really tasty mexican fare in the Gurnee area. Update 2/28/14: Went back and got the fajitas...they were excellent! Also got the flan, but it was disappointing. It had been overcooked and curdled. I hope it was just a bad batch.

Very good food, service, reasonable prices and good portions. I got the burrito suiza and would definitely get that again. The other people with me got the steak burrito and tostada and they were also impressed. I wish that this place was closer to where I live so I could go again but I doubt I will because of the location. As far as sauces go - green has good flavor and isn't too got, red has a smoky flavor and is quite hot. If you get the burrito suiza, they will ask you if you want hot or mild...the hot is extremely got and I recommend getting it on the side to try first.

I came in here at 6:30pm on a weekday, which one would expect to be the prime dinner rush (there were quite a few people there, but not overcrowded). That being said, I expect there to be cooks busy making food. Instead, it seemed there were only a few men in the open style kitchen wrapping pre-made fix-ins into tortillas. I ordered a dinner that included a pork burrito and tamale (plus rice and beans). It was out to me in less than 90 seconds, as if it was just pre-made, sitting under a heater. The pork was extremely tough and tasteless, and the tamale was dry. The rice was what I would expect from a microwave packet, and beans from a can. I stop by mexican restaurants in almost every town I visit, and this was one of the worst. Definitely not going back.

Drove by tried it...loved it. Very clean. Tasty steak burrito that was not over stuffed or under cooked. It was also cut in half which I love. The greensauce was good. Beware of the redsauce, very hot. Free chips and salsa is a bonus. I will definetly be back when I get a chance.

I'm sorry to say it but the food here is not good at all. The restaurant is clean and the service is attentive but it doesn't make up for how terrible the food is. I tried a combination plate so I could sample several different menu items but I didn't enjoy any of the food on my plate. The combo plate included a quesadilla, steak taco, chicken enchilada, rice and beans. The quesadilla was salty, the steak taco was dry and the chicken enchilada had no flavor. To make matters worse, everything on my plate tasted a little bit sweet.

Excellent Mexican food!! It was dead on a Saturday night, we were the only people there, but we will be back for sure. The prices were good, the food was fresh, and the restaurant was clean. The service was good and attentive. If you find yourself in the area definitely stop in!

Really enjoyed the food. Everything we ordered was very good. Not a large menu but that's ok they make what they have very well. Everything was very clean. The staff was really friendly and helpful. The prices were great. You get a nice serving of food. My family will go back the next time we have a craving for Mexican.

About Taco Bell

Taco Bell is a haven for Mexican delicacies such as tacos, quesadillas, burritos, nachos, and other specialty items. Owned by Yum! Brands, Inc. Taco Bell is one of the fastest growing American chains of fast food restaurants. The restaurant operates from 7,072 different locations which are mostly run by independent franchisees and licensees.

The background story of Taco Bell is interesting and inspiring for budding entrepreneurs. The fast-food brand is the brainchild of Glen Bell, who started his first food venture as a hot dog seller in San Bernardino, California. The year was 1948. After witnessing long queues outside a Mexican restaurant called Mitla Café across the street, Bell saw the opportunity and demand for hard-shelled Tacos. He reverse-engineered the recipe and later started selling Tacos and called the venture Taco-Tia.

Later, the name changed from Taco-Tia to El Taco. Eventually, Glen Bell sold the company to his partner and opened the first Taco Bell in Downey in 1962. By 1964, the restaurant also got its first franchise in Torrance. The 100th Taco Bell restaurant was opened by 1965. PepsiCo acquired Taco Bell from Glen Bell in 1978 and the restaurant brand is currently a subsidiary of Yum! Brands which looks after the restaurant business of PepsiCo.
