I went to Steak and Shake today, and it was packed! The staff was frantically clearing tables and almost falling over each other to keep pace. I ordered the Steak and Shake Meal which consisted of a Double Steakburger, 2 sides, and a milkshake. The burger was ok - it is a fast food burger in a place trying to be slightly higher than McDonalds. I have never understood the fries - they are just too skinny. The salad was nothing to write home about either. What I love about this place are the shakes! They have a good flavor and you get a ton of it for your money. Steak and Shake always has coupons. I would not go here in a hurry, however. If it is busy, you will be here for at least a half hour.

Been here several times and it has the slowest drive thru every time we come here! The food is not THAT great for it to take THAT long.

Several weeks ago, I received some calamitous news, namely that the Steak and Shake near my office sells half-priced milkshakes from 2-4pm. Now, I've never eaten at Steak and Shake because a glance at their menu makes my skin crawl (like most fast food). But I sure do love milkshakes (that's right, I'll suck down milkshakes like Linda Lovelace but I draw the line at deep-fried triple burgers and bacon-cheddar onion rings...call me a hypocrite if you want). So that's the problem: I love milkshakes and I love deals, but I also love appearing attractive to the opposite sex and not dying young. But since I have no willpower, I knew that it was only a matter of time, and apparently today was the day. I will say that $1.65 for a 20-ounce milkshake is pretty much the best value on the planet. And it wasn't bad. I ordered a chocolate malt, my usual, and would have appreciated being offered the choice of no whipped cream. That garbage does not belong on a milkshake. Anyway, this thing was pretty solid, not the best and not the worst. Good consistency, near-perfect sweetness, perhaps a bit imbalanced in favor of too much malt and not enough chocolate. Let's call it a B.

Steak 'n Shake is one of the few restaurants that has the designation of being "First meal off the plane" when I'm in Chicago. One one hand, it's totally family based. My mom loved Steak n' Shake, and she passed it on to me. It's in my blood. On the other hand, they do fast food well. Good attention to details. Griddling has been getting more and more press lately as the "correct" way to prepare a burger, yet Steak 'n Shake has been doing it for decades. The skinny, crunchy fries are yum. I always get extra long-cut pickles, and the shakes & freezes are always thick and delicious. Now I need to stop salivating...

When you have to go into work on a Sunday, and it's questionable as to whether you're legal to drive yet from the night previous, $11 worth of quality greasy deliciousness to go and a quick flirt with the high schoolers running the joint is just the pick-me-up I need. Two words: Frisco Melt Also, their new fruit n frozen yogurt shakes are delicious, although you'll be picking raspberry seeds out of your teeth for hours.

I love steak n shake. It is better than the other fastfood places and cheaper as well. Just what we wanted the other night when we decided to grab a quick bite after shopping. It was busy I agree but the service was horrible. Our server took our order right away and then told us it would be a long time since she had to clean tables as well as take orders. Fare enough warning but I doubt she ever put our order in. People who came after us had their meals within 15mins. I then look over to the other tables our server was waiting on and they had nothing as well. You would have thought management would have pitched in and helped out but they ignored the situation and people were angry . As to why they did nothing is beyond me but after 30 mins and not even water on the table we left. If only we had seen our server we would have reminded her that we were there to eat and not watch other's eat, but she forgot us and we never saw her again nor did we see a manager. It was chaotic. They just don't seem to care anymore. Never go on weekends . NEVER.

Pros: *Cheap food (burger/sandwich with fries and a drink for under $8) *Large variety of yummy milkshakes (the peanut butter cup is very good!) *One of the few places in the burbs open late Cons: *Rowdy high school kids (yes I know, I act like I'm old lol)

This was my first time at a sit-down steak n shake! In NY there's no table service, you just fight for a few seats if you want to sit, haha. Soo it's actually 1/2 off shakes from 2-4pm for their HH, so we paid less than $2 for a full shake! I had the birthday shake, yumm. I also got the single guacamole burger with fries for $4-NY really can't beat these prices!! Everything was good and hit the spot!

Oh yeah! Midwestern chains for the win ;) I remember coming here with my high school debate team. But was this view now through rose-colored glasses, as it can often be? Not really - it's still a reliable fast food chain (with barely a dent in your wallet). The burgers are still tasty as ever, and the scope of the shakes' flavors has only increased. And yes, they're good enough to be part of the name. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'll be dreaming about oreo and mint shakes...

When I was a kid, my parents would take me on vacation trips to Florida over spring break and one of our traditions was a stop at the Steak 'n Shake in Greenwood, IN (south of Indianapolis). That was before they came to Illinois. I remember the sign said "In Sight - It must be right!" Steak 'n Shake is still one of my favorite hamburger joints. The sandwiches are tasty and the prices are reasonable. I think the overall quality is noticeably better than what you get at those ubiquitous fast food restaurants. My neighbors liked this location and we came here regularly until they moved away. They especially liked the shakes, which come in quite an array of flavors in addition to the usual chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry. The store gets busy, especially on Friday and Saturday nights, so come early if you can. It's a popular spot for groups.

Walked in the door and waited for long time, the manager and the waiter saw us and noticed us we were standing there!! They had no greeting and said a word!! Seems to be ignored us! BAD customer service!!

Feeling sorry for the ONE WAITRESS working right now. Manager doesn't seem to be helping much. Food was fine; service is understandably slow. Have never been in a restaurant so understaffed. We have not been here in over a year because of prior service issues. Things haven't changed much, I guess.

It's alright. The food isn't unique, but I do give them props for their variety. My dad and my brother like it there. They sometimes sneak out to get it even though my mom has cooked dinner. Every now and then I end up there, because my brother will want it for his birthday or whatever event. We go and I try to get something light. I usually get their salad, which they have a good apple salad (I forgot the name of the salad) or a small bowl of chili. What I really go there for are the shakes. Their shakes look and taste good. I love them. They come in a huge cup, so I usually ask for the junior size.

This place is terrible!!! Theres a manager named norma. She is disgusting. She harasses her employees and is very racist to white people. I saw her spit in this girls food. She called this elderly lady a fat pig. She needs to be dealt with. The place is filthy. I heard a man complain of food having hair in his food and she said go to another place if you dont like it. People like that shouldnt be working in a food place.

I can honestly say that I have never felt more terrified of anyone in the food service business than I was of the manager. She screamed at our party to find a seat or leave, and that they don't move chairs to accommodate large parties. I understand that you may be flustered with a large group, but there is no need to scream at them within 5 seconds of their arrival. Shakes were good though.

Full Disclosure - I eat healthy. So if you want bad for you food cheap, then look no further. A full size milkshake alone will put a thousand points on the calorie board, easy. In my opinion, the food appears to be cooked to order but that seems to take too long for the type of food it is. That and you get wait service too. I admittedly am not a fan but I throw the family a bone once in a blue moon. If this is your thing, then it is not a bad place, just not healthy.

I read where the Steak 'N Shake on Oakton got poor reviews so we decided to try this location instead (since we live in the middle of both restaurants). From the minute we sat down, we were treated like royalty which is unusual to say for a fast food chain. Our server, EDGAR, was more than amazing, and ran the whole show! If he's not already the manager, he should be! He greeted everyone with a smile, bent over backwards to honor our coupons, and refilled our glasses in a timely manner. The burgers and fries were very tasty, but, the chili could not been a bit hotter, but okay. Will definitely return. Kudos again to Edgar!

Yep, it's fast food and it's a burger joint for the most part, but every once in a while I like to shake up my healthier taste buds and treat myself to a double-bacon cheeseburger with fries and a Dr. Pepper. About once a month, on one of my many shopping excursions to Glenview, I just can't pass by this place without going through the drive-thru. Oh so good bad! And, if you're wondering what's different about this place over other equally 'healthy' options, this just about sums it up - a cornucopia of juicy meaty madness mixed with hearty shakes and toasted buns (what were you thinking?). The bacon could be a little bit better, because it seems microwave made, but some of us are just happy to get bacon wherever it comes from...still talking burgers here. Fries are a bit bland, but add salt and they hold up to their other fine competitors. Family-friendly and kids eat free on the weekends, there's nothing wrong with a little Steak and Shake right when you need it.

Everytime we go here the KITCHEN never gets the order correct. The only reason -and I do mean ONLY REASON- this place has even one star is because the servers or the drive up employee seem to read and enter the food correctly; however the kitchen can't seem to make the food right. We won't be returning. The last time we were here we waited an hour for our food and it was cold and incorrect. My boyfriend sent his food back twice because it was cold and incorrect both times. I'm not normally one to send food back because I work in a restaurant but this was just inedible. (Oh and I should mention we payed for the entire meal, nothing was done by management to ensure return business) I'll be heading to Culver's next time.

S& S is a little far so I don't get there often. Their burgers are really juicy and the ingredients really come together. I usually get the frisco melt. I had one of the new banana shakes and it was tremendous. You get a free kids meal with each regular meal on weekends which is a nice value.

Awful service there machines didn't work in drive thru. Car in front of us had to wait 10 minutes just to get napkins. Milkshakes and food are ok.

I'm definitely no gourmand, but I love Steak 'n Shake. Kids eat free on weekends, plus the weekly coupons. I leave with a doggie bag and spend $6 for both of us. That is hard to beat, and I seriously like their burgers. The breakfast menu is great too. I've tried the breakfast biscuits and tacos, cinnabuns, pancakes. but the burgers are my favorite. Fries are good enough, and it's a filling meal. My stomach can't really handle milkshakes, but I've tried them and they're good. Fast food without the disgusting feeling (new slogan?)!

Wonderful food. I love their fries! We recently went in for breakfast, and their breakfast menu is delightful! I had a mushroom skillet and it was a dollar off when you use their coupons (which we were told NEVER expire). Their OJ is very cheap!!! You pay almost $4 for the size you get at other restaurants. The waitstaff is very cordial and when we went, my roomie just got under the wire for all you can eat pancakes. They extended it for him for a few plates more. Very, very accommodating! Everyone who worked there was very sociable, too. Friendly. I like that. The Manager came by to ask how we were doing and even refilled my coffee. Nice touch. It is in a rather large shopping center east of Waukegan road on Willow. It is an out building.

best late night eats on the shore.... if you can stay up late enough there is even a discount on all beverages!... anyway. After many, and I mean flippin many samplings, I have decided this is the best fried chicken sandwich in the area. I even drove to chic filet all the way out in mt prospect just to see what all the fuss was about and in the end I give them a 3 and this sammy a 5. why the four stars? the dreaded filter bot

This review is based solely on the drive through. Steak and Shake is superior to other national drive through chains. We come here occasionally for food. The shoestring potatoes and the burgers are good, but the shakes are excellent. They are a little slower than other chains, but that is because everything is made to order. Did you know they have a happy hour? Yep. Half priced shakes from 2-4. I pulled in at 4:03 and the employee asked a manager to override my order for happy hour pricing (without my knowledge) By the time I reached the window, I got my total, and told them they made a mistake. The smiling cashier told me he didn't want to get my hopes up at the speaker, but he did get the adjustment for me before I pulled around. Sweet! Considering I had a car full of shake ordering munchkins, that was a mighty nice savings, and completely unexpected. I now think of this S & S and get that warm fuzzy feeling. Well done guys.

I stopped by here on Saturday, April 6th, at about 10 PM. The young gentleman that was working the drive thru was the nicest, friendliest cashier/order taker ever. I just wanted to get that out there in hopes his manager or someone will see this and commend him!

I've never been to Steak N Shake before so my good friend took me here. We totally pigged out and ordered a buncha food. I really loved the Jr. Strawberry Banana frozen yogurt shake and the fries. They were light and crispy! I liked their take on their Chili 5 Way. This is definitely not a place though for people who are trying to lose weight or watch their triglyceride levels. As much as we wanted to eat everything, we simply couldn't, it was too much.

Stopped in to grab a quick bite to go and thought I'd be in and out. Stood waiting by the host stand hoping someone would acknowledge me. Nope...staff just stood there looking at me with blank stares while other staff were horsing around and carrying on. Stood there another few minutes while this continued and then I turned and walked out. Yah, first impressions are everything people. My first impression: lazy, unprofessional, and not worth my time or money. I'll go somewhere where I can actually get service.

Memories are funny things, you remember only the best about things from your college days and Steak 'N Shake was one of them. So, when this location opened, we could not wait to use our coupons for the burger that was imprinted in our memories as an old favorite. Greasy, yes, tasty, yes, with a side of thin french fries and the most fabulous milkshakes in the state! We loved it, although we knew better than to think of making it a regular place to dine. It lived up to our memories. Recently, we ventured back and found the hamburgers are now shrunken images of their former selves. The buns are of such low quality that they fall apart as soon as you attempt to pick them up, and the ketchup bottles are not cleaned of cap drippings between diners. The waiters were kind and attentive, but the only remnant of our earlier visit were the great milkshakes. They have several salads on the menu, and if I ever go back they would get the nod.

Definitely better than the other national chains like McD's and BK, but not as good as the Chicago Deli's. That would be Hamburger, Hot Dogs and Gyros for you out of towners.

Say yes to the Frisco Melt, Cheddar cheese fries, and Beef Vegetable soup. I love the varieties of milk shakes here! Half price happy hour is such a great value. Say no to the hotdogs! Had the slaw dog and didn't even get through half of it. It was just bad. No other way to describe it

One of the few places in the northern suburbs open past 9pm, this was where my friends & I would go after poker nights - running in a bit after midnight, close to their closing time at 1am, to grab a meal before part 2 of the poker night. That would be reason enough for the staff to treat us poorly - I've worked in restaurants, so I know how much the kitchen staff hates those people who walk in RIGHT before closing - yet I've never had a bad experience. The people here are friendly and the quality of the food is still good at that time. I will say that I do prefer their melts and sandwiches over the burgers, but I do like their cheese fries, even though they use thin shoestring fries. Best of all are the shakes, which are delicious and thick. Also, they now have a "happy hour", where from 2-4pm, all their drinks are half-off, to which I was informed by the drive-thru guy, when he urged me to "upgrade [my] drink because it was half-off so it'd be cheaper than a regular size anyway". Thanks drive-thru guy!

I worked here for 10 months, so get ready for the truth. The burgers are excellent. So much better than McDonalds, BK, and Wendy's. I would say it's on par with the Culver's butterburger, which is saying a lot. The shakes are amazing. Here's how one is made...one scoop of ice cream, several "squirts" from the liquid syrup containers (chocolate, strawberry, etc.), and 20-30 seconds in a blender. You're basically drinking ice cream. My favorite special request shake is Strawberry Cookies 'n Cream. Everything else is CRAP. Believe me, I've seen everything made. Coleslaw, for example, requires an employee to mix one huge bag of cabbage with one huge sack of mayonnaise. It's disgusting. The fries are the cheapest variety, unsalted and quick to go cold. Culvers and McDonalds have much better fries. Onion rings are also very bland. One more thing, don't mess with the employees. I have seen firsthand what happens to rude customers. Your food will get that extra special touch as it's rolled around on the ground and repeatedly fingered by a dude named Jose.

Hi Today (May 01, 2011), we had a power outage in the shopping complex and the Stake 'N Shake Store 528 was the entire one in the lot having power and hence operational. There was a huge, huge amount of people who were in the restaurant and lined up at the drive-thru. Despite the rush, I was very courteously greeted by Gregory (? manager of store) and he took my order for carry-out. He even gave me good advice even though there was a big rush. He made me comfortable. Through-out the wait period, I saw Gregory rush through orders, working very hard and at the same time, managing his staff in order to minimize people's wait time. I gave a quick glance and everyone was working like crazy with the occasional "phew" kinda phrase! It was a complete team work and staff was totally cooperating with Gregory with handling the unusual load. My wait time for carry-out was 25 minutes, which was late as per the restaurant standards but I was pretty okay with it. Still Gregory apologized and refunded my money, gave me free coupons for shakes, and gave me my order too! This place has exceeded my expectations. Today, I came to know there was a good restaurant despite McDonalds or BK, etc. I think I will forever be a customer of Stake 'N Shake.

Ate here alone one weekend afternoon. My waitress gave her full attention, though the place had a medium amount of traffic. My meal arrived within minutes of ordering, the wait staff was attentive. Taste and display of my meal and shake were fantastic. I was surprised I received good service, usually a person sitting alone would be forgotten especially on weekends when tables are filled with patrons.

I was desperate for food and the lines everywhere were longer than my limited time budget. So, I broke down and pulled into the drive-thru of Steak N' Shake. In an attempt to chose a healthier alternative, I got the grilled chicken and brought it back to my office. OMG, it was awful. Right off the bat, it smelt like fish. Upon tasting it, I nearly gaged. It tasted rotten. I couldn't choke down even a single piece. Out of time and unable to eat the chicken, I tried to eat the bun to save myself until I could afford more time to grab something else. It was saturated with grease. The chicken was not greasy so I have no idea where it came from but I certainly was not going to eat it. Urgh! Now, I know what you are thinking -- that was only ONE experience. So when a coworker was heading to the drive-thru for lunch another occasion, I asked her to get me some fries. When she returned, I quickly grabbed three fries and put them in my mouth. What can go wrong with fries, right? Uh no! They were so incredibly salty that I was choking. She tried some as well and had the same reaction.

With all of the "good" burger places (5 guys, Burger Boss, smash burger) it's always hard for me to stray to the legacy chains, but Steak and Shake has a way of making it feeling like you're eating better than your average fast food burger. had the Octoberfest burger, which was two patties, ham, sauted onions and swiss cheese on a toasted pretzel bun. Satisfying. Chicken fingers for my 5 year sold (she was happy) and my mom cashed in a two year old coupon that somehow was still valid for a double cheeseburger (she liked it) Only reason I went her and not five guys was my mom's desire to get rid of that coupon.

This location is not bad. I prefer to dine in because the food is served fresh with less mistakes. The few times that I've ordered by drive through I've gotten burgers that's been pre-made or somethin was missing such as this one time they forgot the bun to an order ( We had a good laugh over that surprise ). Overall the staff is nice, the service is ok, and the $4 meal deals are great.

As a family, we really do love Steak 'n Shake! The food is good and they have an interesting spin on things. We particularly like their Frisco Burger Melt, with Russian dressing (er, Frisco Sauce) for $5.49 and their Five Way Chili, which has to be a steal at $4.99! How do they make a profit at these prices? Okay, I understand you don't just come to Steak 'n Shake for the food. Yes, we've been known to feast on their Malts and Shakes as well. But, given our move to the southwest, whenever we're in town it makes it all the more special to come here and eat. Don't forget their 2-4 Half priced Special! How much of this can we sneak on the plane? Taxi! Enjoy!

This place is gross. Everything is sticky and it is just dirty in the restaurant. The food is really cheap and it really tastes it - their fries are just bogus - so thin they don't taste like potatoes. The shake was so disappointing, part lumpy, part milky - it was not what I expected from a restaurant with "shake" in the name. When it was time to pay, I had to wait while the lazy manager talked to her friends at a booth. She saw me - just ignored me. Finally I had to call one of the cooks to get me help and she was not pleased that I tore her away from her conversation. Bad experience.
