The one star reviews are absolutely accurate. We spent our hard earned money at Hackneys on Harms last night for a family reunion. It was awful. Six people, including two teenagers, and no one liked anything we had. Their Famous Onion Loaf was a greasy, slimy-tasting brick - fried in a fryer basket with an unseasoned batter. Burgers were tasteless, small, and all the breads and buns were grocery store quality. French fries were soggy and flavorless. Reuben was like a dorm cafeteria sandwich; skimpy and uninteresting. Mac and cheese was inedible; dried out, and resembled dollar store Mac n Cheese in the box. Even the grilled cheese (one family member's THIRD meal he ordered trying to find something good) wasn't very good. Dessert was equally disappointing. Hackneys World Famous Apple Strudel looked and tasted like it came right out of a cheap grocery store package. Ridiculous. Ambiance was NOT special. It's an old, not so clean, building on an old lot. Prices are ridiculous for what they serve; easily double or triple what they should be charging. What is worse, I called before we came, explained to the manager we were concerned about the bad reviews, and she said they were from disgruntled out of towners who were disappointed because "Diners, Drive-ins and Dives" misrepresented them. Yeah, right. BULL! Six out of six dissatisfied customers in our party. This is an overpriced, lousy restaurant. Don't waste your precious time or money on this dump.

I like this place, comfortable with great food and drink. Good selections of beers on tap. Great burgers and good sandwiches. I am new to the area, but I know this place will become a place I return to often.

Been before and way better then today.Meat not hot asked the server and it was like a chor,at the time ther were only 8 people and took 20 minutes to get food, fries were hot.Old and beat up.will try other ones next time.Outside patio will be nice again.

Maybe it's because I didn't grow up in Chicago but I just don't get this place. It seems to be a dining tradition handed down from generation to generation, where you came as a child to bathe in the onion loaf grease and had fond memories of a Hackney burger before McDonalds came to town. I'm all about cozy dives but this place is in need of some serious TLC, starting with the mens bathroom. The food is bland, greasy and unappealing. Service is average at best. The only reason this review got an extra star was for the decent beer selection on tap and the outdoor seating which is pleasant in the summer.

The preferred Chicago area Hackney's location. The outdoor patio is a great spot when the weather is warm. They still have the same great onion loaf you remember as a kid, and the burger selection has only gotten better. Wish they had as wide a beer selection as the Printers Row location, but other than that no complaints. Hackney's is still a Chicagoland institution.

Two words: terrible experience. Everyone's raving about how good Hackney's is, so I had high expectations for this place. First of all, the location. It's hidden behind trees. You WILL pass it up if you're not careful. Another thing was parking. No spots. Anywhere. I don't know if I just came at a busy time or what but it was awhile before someone pulled out. Moving on to the actual restaurant, you have 2 choices. Eat outside or eat inside. My family and I chose to eat inside. The seating was very stuffy and cramped. I reached under the table to move it and my hands were greeted by a sticky residue. I went to the bathroom to wash my hands and what an experience that was. I opened the bathroom door to find piss and water all over the floor. I wasn't even really phased. I gave up on Hackney's back outside in the parking lot. I looked at the ceiling and saw pipes with spiderwebs jutting from the walls. The bathroom literally felt like a supply closet. When I eventually washed my hands, there was no means to dry them. The paper towel dispenser was either empty or broken and the hand dryer WAS broken. Please, at least clean the bathroom periodically. Our waitress was friendly, but she was never there when you really needed her. When we got our food there was quite a mix up with the order, none to big though. Family brushed it off. When I got my burger, I was literally staring at it, contemplating suicide. It was just meat in between two slices of bread. Supposedly you're suppose to tell them that you want lettuce/tomatoes. Good thing our waitress didn't inform us. Pretty sure anywhere else, it's normal for the lettuce and tomato to come with the burger already. The burger itself wasn't bad, but it wasn't outstanding. I got the InsideOut Burger. Their keylime pie on the other hand was actually tasty. A lot of people are probably going to disagree with me about Hackney's. I definitely don't plan on ever coming back here and if I do, it was because I was forced to.

Oh so sad to leave you and not return however, after receiving two turkey burgers ( one was so well done I thought it was literally a hockey puck then the second was under-cooked and raw in the middle) I am now convinced there are far better restaurants to spend my hard earned money at. While the reuben used to save you from a mediocre review, today's experience was just awful. I actually ordered two turkey burgers and ate a poorly made grilled cheese - how do you mess up a turkey burger and grilled cheese sandwich - ick!!!! So sad, too bad....I'd rather venture to another place with better food and service.

This is the best place for dinner on the patio. It is like sitting in the backyard at home! The atmosphere is perfect if you have kids or not! It is wonderful to have attentive staff and the best burgers! The orginal hackneys burger is wonderful! The meat is juicy and very flavorfull withing having to add everything to the burger! The onion loaf is my husbands favorite! We love to come and sit outside fir dinner on sunny days or nice evenings. A place you must try if you are in the Chicago area!

This seems to be the original location. It's a really charming property - have a table outside in the spring, then take a walk in the forest preserve across the street after stuffing yourself with fried onions. A great north shore establishment.

Women tottering around in 4 inch heels on uneven paver bricks. Kids running around screaming and playing. Yeah- quite the place to be seen! Hackney's is loved by many- and if obnoxious kids with adoring (but obviously hearing impaired) parents were not there polluting the peace, it would have made the place better. We are talking about 8-10 screaming kids. No one seemed to think it was a problem, an issue, or even out of the ordinary. Call me a crabby ass- but really. I had to wonder for a second if we were at Chuckie cheese- then I saw the woman with 3inches of pancake makeup- skintight pants and low cut shirt and 4 inch heels out to lunch with her college aged son(?). I slowly remembered, nope- not CC- just in the northern burbs! So- off the ambiance and onto the food. I had a grilled cheese. Yeah- really exciting. We even splurged an extra dollar for a slice of tomato on top (high class place and all). My grilled cheese was good. Instead of giving us each fries, they gave my friends and I a plate of fries to share- and told us we could ask for more. It was not a large plate by any means- but considering i was not eating them- no problem. My guys enjoyed their food. The place could be fun to hang out at. I felt like I was in a huge back yard with a waitress to help me out. It was not too fancy, drinks might have been great. Instead, I was internally cheering for pancake face to trip and fall, and for the kids to SHUT UP! Yeah- I had a killer headache- but really, there were other patrons there. It seems that these people felt it was their right to make the entire space their back yard. The waitstaff did not seem to care. I would return- but make sure that anyone with kids that do not know how to control their sound output was not present. Now retracting claws, back in the city! Whew!

Wow, the Hackneyburger is BASIC. What a complete let down. Is the meat even seasoned? Do I really need to ask for lettuce and tomatoes, or are most people ok with eating a bland burger patty slapped between to slices of bread? I should've gotten what my bf ordered - the Guinness stout burger. The meat was oozing with flavor! Too bad it's only a seasonal burger, though! They tossed in a side of carmelized onions for my burger, and it improved the flavor a little but was extremely greasy. If I ever come back, I'll also be sure to order a burger on a regular or pretzel bun. The sliced rye bread from a loaf is just too thin and flimsy. The fries are also very unimpressive. Our 1/4 order of fried onions (just right for 2 people) was a little too burnt, but even if it wasn't, it was nothing to rave about. The only saving grace of our experience were the reuben eggrolls - corned beef and sauerkraut stuffed inside an eggroll with Thousand Island dipping sauce - so ingenious! The majority of the staff here are young girls who seem a little absent minded and/or inexperienced. Our waitress took another table's order (who got seated after us and were a table of 6-8) before she took ours! The girls weren't the warmest to receive us or say goodbye either. There's a large, tall sign at the entrance on Harms Rd, but the driveway is narrow, so you must turn in exactly where the sign is. The parking lot is also unnecessarily large for the amount of diners the restaurant holds. We sat in the room off to the left, and it was almost unbearably cramped. My seat was in an unusual spot in the middle of a walkway. I wanted to eat fast so I could get out of there.

From what the staff told me they really stepped it up when Guy came to visit here. The inside-out burger wasn't even on the menu before he visited and was put on there just to impress. Before I tear this place a new one I'm going to say I didn't like it just because I'm not a burger purist. If you want JUST the flavor of the beef with no extra salt, pepper, unnecessary seasoning of any kind then this burger is for you. My problem is that the food is bland...ridiculously so. They don't salt ANYTHING. Saving grace is the wonderful old style onion rings, probably the best I've ever had in my life and they serve them so fresh it's no problem that they don't salt them, you can just do it yourself - they're THAT fresh. PURISTS ONLY DO NOT COME HERE FOR A SEASONED BURGER. Service is excellent btw.

Of all the Hackney's this one is by far the best. I've extolled the virtues of Hackney's in reviews of its other locations, but I suppose it bears repeating here. A hackneyburger, medium rare with swiss cheese and grilled onions plus a half brick of onions is pretty much my perfect indulgence. Burgers cooked and seasoned perfectly. And the half brick... mmm.... getting hungry!! Anyway, on to why this location is the best. Ambiance ambiance ambiance. And a great outdoor area in the summer. Love the tucked away location, small restaurant feel.

Went here after a round of golf at a local North Shore course, and was really impressed by Hackneys. The feel of the old speak easy that it was off the beaten path was really neat, the fact that they have a giant beer garden in the back is also super cool. This was the first time I was at a hackneys', and would definitely come back. Started off with the onion loaf, which to me was just a blooming onion (from outback) without the dipping sauce, it was good but not as great as I anticipated, after hearing so much about it. My entree was a Reuben, and being a Reuben connoisseur, hackneys had a lot to live up to. It was a tasty sandwich that had a good blend of all the key ingredients of a Reuben, but was a little lacking in the quantity of the meat. Otherwise this is a 5 star Reuben. I like that they serve their fries family style, since I never usually eat too many and need a whole order to myself, and the staff was super friendly and inviting. Anytime I'm in the area I'll make a point to stop here in the future.

Was a cooler night and we decided to try the indoor restaurant. The first sense when you walk in , is the damp smell, than the darkness of the small interior. I prefer not to be so tightly seated that every conversation is interrupting your meal, too loud due to too right seating and two small rooms. Had the meat loaf, it was just OK , should have went with my first thought of French dip. Meat loaf was ok but not especially tasty, more on the filling side, but bland. We enjoy the outside garden and maybe it makes everything seem better, unfortunately cold weather is coming and we will have to wait till next year, as would not visit the inside facilities again. Outside service was not bad, inside not as well, they try but it seemed to be lacking this night.

The only good hackneys left. Lake Zurich uses meat they've left out, lake street is just plain dirty and downtown is hit or miss on service. This place has held the test of time and the outdoor seating in the summer is classic Glenview thoroughfare!

Eh, is it weird that I find this Hackney's to be not as good as their others? The service is pretty nonexistent. One evening my friend and I went for a late dinner and we weren't sure where to go to be seated outside. There was no one at the host station inside and when we dined al fresco service was a bit strange also. They were there but really seemed like they had better things to do. The food similarly also seemed blander here too. The inside out burger had almost no bacon or cheese in it. The onion roll was also just super bland and greasy with just no onion flavor to it. I'd go to another Hackney's since there's another one right around the corner.

Solid CORNED BEEF on dark rye bread with fries. Overall solid sandwich with good bread. Corned beef was moist and not too salty. The kicker was the HORSERADISH. It's the real deal and will clear your sinuses! Fries are good as usual. Went on Saint Patrick's Day around 6 so the place was a very festive sea of Kelly green. We were able find a seat at the bar after pounding a few pints and listening to bag pipes and the nice piano lady with perfect posture. She gingerly sang Kool and the Gang's "Celebration" with extra staccato. I'm secretly in love with the piano lady! Service was friendly and the place is clean in spite of being packed.

About a 2-2.5: Some friends and I came to check out Hackney's for lunch, as we had heard that they were rated as one of the top burger places in the US. This restaurant has been around since 1939, the Harms location being their original. I tried the Famous Hackneyburger, which was served on a Dark Rye (or, you can opt for a bun) - you can choose between an 8 oz or a 4oz, which I chose the 8 oz-er. I found the meat to be on the bland side, and I wasn't a fan of the rye that they used (even though I am a huge fan of rye breads), as it was very chewy and 'goopy.' I did ask for extra ketchup, but the condiment didn't really help much. The burger automatically comes with cheese, so if you're lactose intolerant, you can substitute or opt out of that. The side of shoestring french fries were forgettable, and the service was a little MIA. You can tell how the restaurant itself is pretty old-school and filled with history. While my experience was more on the underwhelming side, the place seems to be a local favorite. +tasteless burgers +chewy rye breads +MIA service +the original Hackney location (on Harms)

I love their burgers. Put a little blue cheese and grilled onions on it and there are few better. The bucket of onions rings is great as well.

When me and the guy go to hackneys, we always sit at the bar. The service has always been good and we enjoy the conversation. I've had the shrimp appetizer which is great. But my favorite part is hands down the veggie burger. It's so tasty , even without the bun that even my overly carnivorous man has no problem sneaking bites when I'm not looking. He always goes with the regular burger and has never had any complaints.

Always liked Hackney's. Been going here since I was a child. It is a real piece of North Shore nostalgia. The food has always been decent, but not great. But I have to say the burgers have gotten expensive ($12.50 for a fried burger with cheese). As of late, the food is also suffering from middle age, or maybe it is old age? We visited here on July 3rd and sat at the lovely outside garden for a meal for lunch. We both left disappointed. My burger was ordered medium. It came well done and had little taste. The serving of fries was skimpy. The burger came on Hackney's classic dark rye, which in this case, was falling apart. Hackney's makes a big deal of its rye but it is best avoided. I am beginning to wonder whether it might be good idea to just avoid Hackney's altogether. My spouse ordered a spinach salad with grilled chicken and a lemonade ice tea. What came was not a spinach salad, but a salad with old, tasteless iceberg lettuce. The salad ($12.95) contained the bitter core yellow leaves that should be discarded. The tomatoes were mushy and the chicken rubbery and tasteless. My spouse had to remind the waiter to bring her two pieces of Hackney dark rye bread. (The salad comes with a gross looking muffin. The waiter forgot to make the substitution. He also forgot to bring my wife's lemonade-ice tea.) When the bill came, we saw we had been charged $1.25 for two pieces of bread. I must note that the bread here is really more like carmel colored rye bread, soft and not much fiber. It has always been a weak spot and is long overdue for an upgrade. Instead, the restaurant is now charging for two slices of whimpy bread when you order a $13 salad? Geez times must be tough. I complained, but the waiter was unsympathetic. It's true I am a sucker for the place.I have a nostalgic tie to Hackney's. But the food is pricey and the service can be spotty. There are definitely better places to get a hamburger, but Hackney's doesn't seem to have woken up to this fact. Total check for two people - one order with no beverage and the other order with one draft beer: $40. I have to say this was a rather expensive lunch. When I told the waiter that we didn't think we'd be back to the Harms location, he replied, "ok good to hear it." I am not sure he was listening. Or maybe he was just tired of fielding complaints.

My gal pal whisked me away to this Hackney's on a relatively warm autumn Saturday afternoon. At first I was wondering where the heck she was driving me, as we were seemingly heading deep into the woods as we turned off a busy street. We wound up on quiet Harms Road in Glenview, and the spacious outdoor seating area of this location has the feel of someone's cozy woodsy backyard. We sat next to a tree with chirping birds, and a chipmunk popped in and out of some bushes, adding to the pleasant casualness of the setting. Everyone must order the onion loaf, basically a heap of French fried onion strings (definitely go with someone who likes onion rings, lest you miss out on the experience). Their Oktoberfest menu was featured, so I went with the bratwurst plate with two plump bratwurst, plus tasty red cabbage and German-style scalloped potatoes. I washed it down with a Hofbrauhaus Oktoberfest beer. My dining mate ordered the reuben and had enough for leftovers. Neither of us had room for the apple streudel though. There is also an outdoor kids' play area so they can work off the calories. While the food at Hackney's was pretty good, the aspect of "sitting in the backyard" definitely enhanced the overall experience.

Glad to see some gluten and dairy free options but not happy that when I tell our waitress I need to avoid gluten, eggs , and dairy that she acts like it's inconveniencing her to look at what's in their black bean burger and other options. Guess when I called their Lake location I failed to realize that each location of this family owned restaurant has different menus... Why have a gluten free menu at your Lake location just 5 miles away? My mother-in-law ordered a burger on a pretzel bun and questioned the waitress when it came out on a regular bun, they ran out, but she didn't care to let her know ahead of time. Seems inconsistent and I used to love Hackneys, wish I went to The Bad Apple instead.. I won't ever recommend this place again

I go to this place whenever I want a real honest to goodness hamburger. I usually go around lunch time or early dinner. Wait staff is always friendly and helpful. This is the place to come for a beer and a great tasting burger at a fair price. I love meat and always get the Hackney burger on a pretzel roll cooked rare. The other breads just don't hold up to the juiciness of these burgers. I sometimes get just raw onion and tomato or grilled onions. Either way is great. I have had the onion loaf too and it's yummy. I was surprised that when I joined their email club I got 10 dollars off on my order. So with the extra money I splurged and got myself dessert too. Of course I had to get it to go cause I was full after a burger, salad fries and a beer. If I could have changed anything I would have gotten a better grade of lettuce like spring mix or spinach but the salad was yummy too and I ordered it with blue cheese crumbles. But hey I came for the burger. And am always satisfied when I leave.

Still a solid, but not what it used to be. The saddest part is they no longer have the original cheesecake. We still go often and enjoy. The outdoor seating is also nice.

Supposedly "famous" burgers were frozen perfectly circular patties with no flavor. Our server was "lost" for 45 minutes--other servers filled in....without explanation. When the substitute server forgot barbecue sauce for my husband's burger, I went to the front desk to ask....the head Hostess responded irritably that she would have to go to the kitchen to get BBQ sauce for us. No one working there seemed happy to be there--and the quality of the food exemplified this unhappiness as well. For a dinner that cost our family $100....we could have done so much better for half the price at Portillos!!!

This was my first trip back to a Hackney's in over a decade. I'd only been to the other Glenview location, although my mom hardly ever let us go there to eat because she said it was too dirty. So most of my experience with that place was when I used to go caroling there with a singing group I was in in high school. But that was a whole other life... anyway.... Hackney's has that dark, taverny, family-dinner atmosphere that you'd never stand for in the city, but somehow don't mind when you're having dinner in the suburbs (why is that?). The onion brick is a local legend, and rightly so-- it's fantastic. Sadly, their "famous" green river now comes bottled, so they've destroyed all the cache it had back when I was an impressionable youngster. (And since Rennaker's is long gone, where can you get a good green river nowadays?) We came specifically because we had a mad hankering for a burger... and I was sadly disappointed. The beef itself was fine, but you can completely destroy a burger if you put it on the wrong bread, and Hackney's insists on doing exactly that. The girlfriend went the traditional route and got hers on a bun, which may have been an actual Wonder Bun. I had mine on dark rye, which had the consistency of soggy Wonder Bread, if you painted it brown (or maybe the Wonder company has started putting out a dark rye version of their pressed sawdust loaves). The fries were fine. If you're in Glenview, and you need a good burger, skip Hackney's. Check out Valley Lodge on Waukegan (at about Winnetka Rd.). They have the same dark, taverny, family-dinner atmosphere and the same geriatric crowd, and their patty melt is fantastic.

Wonderful outdoor dining hidden in an otherwise upscale residential neighborhood. The tables are just patio furniture (complete with umbrellas) but the trees & gentle breeze make for a relaxed retreat. I ate indoors once but found the interior cramped and dark. In response to the other reviewers, YES, the burgers are good - BUT there are lots of other good options if you're not in the mood for a burger. Their fish fry is light and not at all greasy. They also have daily specials that can be quite good. My recommendation is to take a half-day some beautiful Friday this Summer and head over for a long lunch at Hackney's.

Oh, a childhood spent at Hackney's. Such joy! This is the best burger I have ever had in my life, no joke. Also incomparable onion loaf and cole slaw. Friday-night perch were pretty tasty, too. The. BEST! I make it a point to pop in whenever I'm home (which is a lot). I wish we had them in NYC...

In our family, the first day of summer is defined as the first night we can eat dinner in Hackney's outdoor patio. Maybe the food is just hamburgers and maybe the white playhouse could use a coat of paint, but the feeling of the place is hard to match. Drinking a G&T under a massive old tree, while 1/2 watching a cubs game on an ancient 23 inch TV near the bar, at 2 in the afternoon is one of life's rare pleasures. its not fancy. It's classic.

Hackney's is always a favorite. This was the first time I had ever been to the one on Harms. I was expecting a stuffy atmosphere, bein gin the North Shore, and was suprised to find that it was very laid back. A little gross considering they just got over the infestation of cicedas. As for the food, you have to get the fired onion block. Is is just a huge mound of battered and fried onions and tastes ohhh so good. Their ruben sandwich is to die for! It's just how it should be greasy and covered in dressing. Being pregnant makes this my new favorite spot to indulge my cravings. I only gave it four stars because our waiter was not very friendly and kept getting out drink orders wrong. He really didn't want to be working and you could tell.

Two words: onion loaf. Most delicious thing in the planet. Their sliders are also amazing and if you want to go for something a little lighter, their salads are also great. But most of all, I go there when I'm having a huge deep fried food craving.

The wife and I decided to go try this place out after hearing about their burgers. I got the Bavarian burger on pretzel bread (I'm a sucker for pretzel bread and beef) and the wife got the inside out burger on sourdough. My burger was pretty flavorless while her burger had more taste, but nothing special. The fries for two was pretty miniscule compared to other places. The service was good, but nothing to offset the food.

A North Shore institution - for good reason. This location is my favorite of all the Hackney's - the place can't be beat for great summertime outdoor dining. The outdoor bar is the best place to relax and people-watch. When it's time to eat, you can really only get the wonderful burger with cheese on dark rye with raw onions and the artery clogging onion loaf. It's a classic, and so is this location. What a gem!

Hackney's on Harms is summertime. There is a lot of history in that place. I have a lot of history in that place. It has great burgers and great onion loaves.. As I get older my stomach is less tolerant but it's worth a visit a couple of times a summer just to remember what summer was like in calmer more simple times. Great nostalgia and a great place to sit outside and eat, drink, and talk with good friends!

This is a great place to go for a good burger and an onion brick. I personally always stick to the grilled cheese but everyone else I go with always gets the Hackney Burger and they are always very pleased. Also, you get a huge plate of really good fries for the table, and their coleslaw is delicious. Hackney's on Harms is best enjoyed in the summer, when you can eat outside...but the inside is charming in it's own special way as well.

Ever think of starting a business and daydream of how it will take off in the future...20, 50, 70, 100 years later?! One Glenview, Illinois couple did back in the 1920s. Check out Hackney's if you love history, good burgers and beer. The backyard experience is a must. Imagine burger recipes almost a hundred years old. Great dedication for the same family that still runs this establishment. Crowded with families and kids just running around. So, probably not a first date unless you are both a fan of history and simply tasty food.

Great, old school funky vibe...tasty food...but I gotta say, not as over the top amazing as Guy Fieri (Diners, Drive Ins and Dives)always makes it seem. Don't get me wrong, if I lived locally this would probably be a regular stop, but after almost a week of eating in a different restaurant for both lunch and dinner every day, I was ready to have my fat kid socks knocked off and it just didn't happen. I did like the old school dark, neighborhood vibe this place had. The staff seemed to know many of the regulars, and the bar looked like a nice place to have sat as well. The menu has a German flare, and the house specialty onion loaf looked amazing, although we did not order it. I had the signature "Inside Out Burger" on the house dark rye. The pleasant dark brown sliced bread was a nice change from a regular old bun....but it was not a wise choice for a juicy stuffed burger and it quickly became soggy and no help at all in holding on to the great sandwich. We also had the homemade apple pie with cinnamon ice cream, very good...and the bread pudding with the toffee sauce...both fantastic and leaving us on near food coma on our drive back to the hotel.

Good minestrone soup. Finished soup long wait now to order. Oh waitress thought we were waiting for another person. Ordered chicken salad and inside out burger. Burger was perfect on pretzel bun. Juicy oozing with hot cheese and bacon. Slaw heavy on horseradish. Chicken salad fresh and chicken was tender. Would have given five except for the wait.

This place is a classic. You feel like your in a Wisconsin supper club. The inside out burger can not beat. Fun unique place to grab some easy comfort food in a laid back atmosphere.

I've always struggled with Hackney's on Harms...Trying to give it a chance. I think it's a great place to have an outdoor meal, but indoors - forget it. The one thing that grosses me out is that the floors are sticky, probably from years of grease being wiped around. A lot of my friends like to go to Hackney's, so I usually give in and go with them. The last time we were there we ordered the special 'Reuben egg rolls,' and a 1/2 brick of french fried onions to share. Both were good, but a little too much deep-fried food for me. I also had the Pretzel Burger, which was OK but cooked 'well' instead of the 'medium' I ordered. The fries weren't crispy. I took half of my burger home, and the remaining fries (I thought). The next day when I opened my doggy bag, there were no fries. I was a bit disappointed that they pitched them instead of giving them to me like I requested. Oh well. And, yes, I'll probably go back with my friends, but Hackney's wouldn't be my first or second choice.

I am sad to write this review of this old family favorite, but it must be done so that others don't walk away feeling so let down. Just remember Hackney's from your childhood and let it go at that. 1. Waitstaff was horrible. Unable to deliver any item in a timely way, from water to iced tea to the food. Everything was asked for time and again and still there were long periods of time without anything being supplied. They were however very busy setting up the tables for the dinner crowd because apparently that is more important than the people actually sitting there trying to order a lunch. 2. The food delivered to our table was wrong and the check and change was totally wrong. We had to flag down our waitress to get the right food and then let her know she gave us back almost more money than we gave her to pay the bill. She was very confused and befuddled the entire time. If we were people without ethics we could have walked away and paid just a couple of dollars for our lunch. 3. But worst of all was the food. Now I know Hackney's was the place to go to get a good old fashioned burger on dark rye and they could always be counted on for the brick of onion rings. There was nothing better anywhere, but times they are a changin' and I want a bit more variety in my food these days. So tell me how this restaurant can screw up a grilled chicken breast salad? Seriously! It was the most boring, unimaginative, uninspired salad I've ever had and at $11.00 it was insulting. So I'm officially writing all the Hackney's restaurants off my list of stand bys. Not so sorry to say good bye after Friday's fiasco.

Had fond memories about Hackney's on Harms from college, but either my memory or the place has slipped a lot. Just went there for a late lunch on Sat afternoon and had to (a) request menus after being seated and no one coming by (and we were seated right in front by the hostess stand/water station/gate), (b) ask for a server to come and take our order after again no one came by after several minutes and no drinks and (c) get up and ask another server for refills after again no one coming by even though all three sodas and a beer were empty for some time. At least the kids got their sodas right away but it was probably 10 min for my beer, at which point we had finished our meals. Other people around us seemed to be getting better service, so maybe it was just our server - I am not sure but I am not going to go back to find out. Ambience - 4 stars. Food - 2 stars. Service - 0 stars.

I've heard good things but was pretty disappointed with the food. We sat inside which probably was a mistake, the place has character, old style, very old seating, dark, super old bathroom, and maybe somewhat cozy if it were 10 below zero, but the food was a generous average to bad. We ordered the chicken fingers for the kids, very processed, overpriced 9 bucks and tasted pretty rough, couldn't eat them. Also got two salads, the lettuce was not fresh and dressing tasted like it came out of a bottle. The chicken sandwich was just ok, nothing special and the fries were overly greasy. I think if we sat outside and just had a beer in their big patio it would be been fine, then got dinner someplace else. Sorry Hackneys, wish I could have been more positive. Think about changing the menu and / or where you get the food.

Hackney on Harms, Don't waste your hard earned money on this place. We saw this restaurant on Guy Fieri's Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives, and I have to say I am shocked at how bad the food was! Either that show is a big sham, or this restaurant went all out when he was reviewing them, and got sloppy after. I wish we'd checked Yelp before we went there. We went in a group of 5, and were told we would have to wait 10-15 minutes. So we got drinks at the bar and waited. The restaurant was packed, like a tin of sardines. The tables are really close together and once we sat down, we were constantly getting bumped by the staff and other patrons. We ordered their 'brick' of French Fried Onions for appetizers, for the table to share. When they came, they were sitting in a little puddle of oil, and had no flavor to them at all. The batter was completely bland - no salt and no taste, completely soggy, it wasn't even crisp. It was so soggy, that the batter seemed boarder -line raw. One bite of this, and my husband was giving me the I-can't-believe-you-dragged-us-all-here looks, and I realized that the rest of the food was going to be as bad. I wish they had proven me wrong! I ordered the Inside/ Out Hackneyburger and my husband the original hackneyburger. Mine came with tomatoes and a leaf of lettuce in it, but it was dry. At the absolute center of the burger I got a nice bacon and cheese flavor, but most of it was bland, and what bothered me most was the lack of mayonnaise or anything in it. The restaurant was so busy that I was unable to ask a waitress for any, and when she finally came to the table to ask how everything was, I was almost done. My husband's burger was even worse. There was nothing in it! No lettuce, tomatoes, nothing! He's lactose-intolerant, and did not ask for cheese to be added, which made it worse. The burger completely lacked flavor, there was absolutely no spice or herbs or salt in it. It tasted like just plain meat. His burger did come with coleslaw on the side, but that was pretty tasteless too. Once again, it lacked any herbs, or salt. It tasted like a little cabbage mixed in a lot of sweet mayonnaise, and that was it. The fries tasted like they had been fried in old reused oil; there was just a hint of fishiness to them. One of our friends had the bison burger, and I took a bite of it. It was as plain and salt-less as our burgers were. We did order dessert, it was something like an apple strudel, but not very impressive. Not even memorable enough to remember exactly what it was. Altogether, this place was an absolute let down. We went home and watched the Guy Fieri video again, and the burgers he ate seemed to be filled with condiments, looked nothing like ours. In my books Hackney on Harms deservers half a star and nothing more, and since these dishes are standard on all location menus, I doubt they would be much better.

Sucked. What else to add? Everyone else has covered it. Food was blah, Service was blah. Cleanliness of the Bathroom was blah. I feel bad because I had some out of town guests. They wanted to try something that was on Diners, Drive Ins and Dives. This was the closest place to where they were staying and I regret taking them there.

I've been eating here occasionally since the 70s. Sadly, this location has gone downhill. The carpet-like floor seems filthy. The black table surface was sticky. The onion rings that made them famous were undercooked. I'll be taking a break from Hackney's.

After looking over these reviews here on Yelp for a few years now, I feel compelled to finally post a review. In the interest of full disclosure, I will tell you all that I did work here for some time. So you have two options: See my review as skewed or, take my advice as an insider. You read on, and you decide. Hackney's on Harms is 100% worth the trip, the experience, the cost, the jarring that it's not what you might be used to, the you-name-it. It's unique in the one and only sense of the word. There's no place else like it. Like every place on Yelp, it has its bad, fair, awful, and wonderful reviews. Regardless, reviews don't matter here as much as YOU do. If you're someone that likes to experience the past, the old school vibe of a place that's unapologetic about its history, and has a classic menu with the twist of something novel, quality, then this is for you! A couple quick replies to other reviews. If a server was walking out of the bathroom with a glass, she probably went in to use it herself, and saw that a guest left it in there after waiting for a table and then using the facility. She was more than likely just taking it to a bus pan because that was her job. If the chicken tasted processed, it was a rare bad moment in the day, and that sucks. The chicken is super fresh form Harrison's up the road, and 100% Amish. True, the staff can be young and a little inexperienced at times. This can be especially accurate in the summer when it consists of mostly college students home and making a summer buck. But, that's who is willing and able to throw themselves into a full-time job for the 8 weeks Chicago-area weather permits. Remember that these are hard-working kids from the community around the restaurant, and that this place supports them in their efforts. We all should too! But, all those details aside, you almost always you get the service your hard earned dollar deserves. If there's something you were expecting, you should just ask for it. This place does not nickel and dime you. (Lettuce and tomato for example, or an extra salad dressing, etc.) And well-drinks, wine, and beer, are a great, fair price. (Also, know that the staff pools tips, so you should always feel free to ask ANYONE you see for anything that you need.) Fries are served family-style, and are bottomless. They are unseasoned, so have a few extra after you add your perfect amount of salt. The burger is an unconventional classic; meant to be served in its speakeasy days on super soft, sliced, homemade dark eye, topped with a large slice of fresh raw onion. THAT's the classic. So, if you are surprised that it doesn't look like a Big Mac, or a fancy Puma's Corner burger, remember the following: We might all be a product of our modern restaurant ideals and burger sensibilities, but this place isn't. It's a throwback, an endowment. So, go ahead, let your belly "Pop some tags," if you will. You'll look incredible in your granddad's a tavern. And have a great experience too.

Any place known for its meat burgers that can get special vegetarian requests 100% correct deserves 10 stars in my book. I ordered a black bean burger prepared like the pretzel burger, with swiss cheese, grilled onions and a pretzel roll. And that's exactly how it arrived! It was excellent, and I can't wait to return. I loved the outdoor patio, and I found all of the staff to be quite friendly and responsive.

So I finally made it here for the first time and I had the 2 staples, the Hackney Burger and the fried onion loaf thing. The onion loaf was OK, it was really greasy and did not have much flavor. The burger was big and nice and juicy, but also really did not have much flavor. The fries were the best part of the meal, nice and crispy and not too greasy. We sat outside so I can't speak for the atmosphere inside, but the patio was pretty nice and the service was good. 3 of us split the medium onion loaf and I had an iced tea and with tip it was $18. I don't really get why so many people love this place. I've had much better onion rings and burgers for much less.

I have been here a few times and the draw to this place in my opinion is the outdoor seating area. It is in a wooded area with lots of big trees. If the weather is good, this can be a very nice place to eat. It seems like the menu has fewer items than I remember in the past. I didn't even see a section for non-alcoholic beverages or salads even though there was a salad featured on the specials board. I ended up going with a Hackney burger. For the price which was about $10, I would expect a very tasty burger, but this was not. I only ate half of it. The bun was very plain, no seasoning or toasting. Fries were ok. We also got onion rings which were also ok. About the onion rings, be careful when you eat these because they are very greasy and will soak into anything they touch including clothes. The service was friendly. The speed of getting food was leisurely. Overall I get the impression that they are skimping in areas to try to make more money, but that is never a good idea with a restaurant business because if the overall product and experience is not good, people won't come back.

Ok so I went for dinner last week and it was ok. Pros: the ambiance the sweet potato fries Cons: the men's bathroom was cramped and kinda gross sauteed onions were way too greasy the pretzel bun I got was kinda stale, I suggest the dark rye instead by the way you can purchase a loaf to take home with you) other than that it was ok, nothing spectacular, but I would recommend to go for a few drinks and dinner with friends, though a warning its predominantly an older Anglo crowd....

We are moving to a local neighborhood and were excited to try out Hackney's, which is famous in Glenview. If this place ever had a peak it is well past it. The food was the worst I had in years, it is just bland, non-descriptive; makes you feel yucky and lethargic. I imagine the retirees that frequent this place don't mind- but the rest of us, accustomed to at least decent food, will find this place as a black hole where flavor goes to never be heard from again. The prices, for what you get, are crazy. A burger is ten bucks with cheese for a dollar more. The menu is very limited, which you would think allows Hackney's to perfect the few items they sell. Instead they just produce below average burgers and sandwiches. Even something as simple as fries or their onion loaf comes out limp and just soaking in grease. I cannot imagine this place lasting once the boomers are all gone, morbid but true. (I do want to say that the staff is nice and efficient. Keep the front-end staff and fire all the cooks.)

It was father's day. We were all looking forward to going to hackneys. As we arrived we saw a waitress coming out of the bathroom with a Hackneys drinking glass. I want to know what she was doing with it. We all just sat down, we got a whiff of a scent that was a mix of grease and farts. We ordered potato skins as a family. It took about 30 minutes to get then and they were all freezing! We sent them back and they came back out with the same plate we were eating off of with the potato skins. The same potatoes came back. Not new ones. Our old ones. We took a bite and the insides were all mealy and tasted lie chemicals. We ordered or food and it took about an hour for our stuff to come out. Everyone was Hungry by then. We ate our greasy food paid and left. It was over priced for the junk that we got. We paid almost 80 bucks. This morning when we woke up, my mom and sister had diarrhea. We will never go again.

I love Hackney's on Harms. I love the outdoor terrace in the summer, right behind the owners house. The huge old trees above you. In winter, I love the combination old barge/old 1960's rec room feel of the indoor bar & restaurant, which always seems full of locals, none of them hip, pretentious, holier-than-thou urbane types. A Pretty geriatric crowd, in fact, most of the time. And it's great fun eavesdropping on their conversations. Anyway, a trip out to Glenview ends up being a refreshing day trip from city to a place that is not so far away but it feels like Wisconsin. Just a nice cheap and quick change of scenery. I also love their burgers because they are tender, and taste so fresh you would think they just ground up the cow out back. Of course the onion loaf makes the trip worthwhile in itself. Two people can easily share the half order. Because I don't go there frequently, I haven't had many other menu items other than the burgers and sandwiches. Service is always dependable and the staff always knowledgeable and friendly. Hackney's on Harms also makes a good stop in summer if you take the bike path north from Caldwell Woods at Devon And Peterson. You can do a healthy ride up to the Chicago Botanic Gardens, and get off the path on your way home to stop at Hackney's. A 40 mile round-trip bike ride takes away the guilt of that brick of fried onions you're about to consume! (And you may need to make another stop for Mylanta if you didn't take your little purple pill beforehand.:-)

I have always went to the location on Lake and thought I would try the Harms location. What can I say the place has a "Backwoods Wisconsin" feel. The roof looks like it is in need repair. The inside is very much dated. After going to the Lake Ave. location I would never guess they are the same place. The people were nice and friendly. As for the food, We started off with the Onion Loaf. YUM! The onions were tender inside and crispy on the outside with a little bit of grease. But it was such a great starter! The cheese burger was very juicy and had a great flavor. The grilled onions were nice and sweet. I understand they make there own rolls and it showed. So the food was very good. Will I return to Hackney's? yes. Will I return to this location? no. The Lake Ave location is much nicer.

For someplace with such a quintessentially lovely fried appetizer -- the much lauded onion loaf -- their french fries certainly do suck. Really, they are pallid, tasteless things that have spent most of their lives in the freezer. The waitress promised us a "bottomless" plate to share, but the ones we got weren't even worth finishing. I also have to dis the Hackney Burger. Pre-formed, ovoid, with no discernible grilled taste. I ordered a salad from the specials list (to make up for indulging in the aforementioned onion loaf) which was just fine, but the bite I took from hubby's burger reminded me why I never liked the things. This Hackney's is an institution -- it has been open since 1939. Like the North Shore brat I am, I've had many meals here over many years. But other than the onions and history, there really isn't that much going for it.

I love that this place was once a speakeasy. I ordered the inside out burger and it was seriously delicious! It was a burger with cheddar cheese and bacon in it. I had a white Russian to drink and it was really good, but it was $8. Our service was good, except that according to some of the other reviews, fries are bottomless and we were not told this. That's ok, though, because I didn't like the fries anyway. They were the frozen kind that are really bland. Also, every picture that they had of their burgers (including on the place mats) showed all of the burgers having lettuce and tomatoes. Neither of our burgers had lettuce and tomato on them, which makes me sad because since I need to order my burger without a bun, I just had a burger on a plate with nothing else, no garnish or anything. Overall, though, the burger was so good and I liked the decor so much that we will be back. So, I'm giving Hackney's on Harms 4 stars.

This is the first time I have been to this location and I almost missed it! I saw the sign, but the driver didn't. It is tucked away in a neighborhood. I love the old fashioned feel of the place, it really brings you in. The manager was explaining to the bartender how to pour specific beers. I could really tell he took pride in it. It was kind of awkward though when we first went in because there were several staff/hosts but they were like "seat yourselves." Since we were not regulars, we weren't really sure where to go, so we went to sit in a back booth, and it took the server 10 minutes to notice we were there (we were talking and didn't really notice anyway). Once our server found us, she was very sweet and apologized the service was great. The food was your typical food you would expect. The onion block was good, and the half order was HUGE for 2 people. I had the fish and chips, and my friend had the Hackney's burger, but he said that he prefers Chili's burgers.

This is a classic North Shore institution. There is nothing like an onion brick and a Hackney burger. It's such a unique fun restaurant. The service is always friendly and attentive. This location is particularly fun in the summertime.

Hackney's is one of those places that has been around so long, that your memories have memories of it. Started in 1939 and family-owned, it has remained a family business throughout its long history on the North Shore. Its wooded location just adjacent to the Forest Preserve gives you the sensation that you are eating dinner at your grandfather's country club, fresh from a round of golf...but with better beer and no golf. The original location has a small, traditional menu centered around the famous Hackneyburger. The best bread to eat it on is the rye. Lettuce and tomato come on the side, on a separate plate, and if your stomach is up to it, the grilled onions make the perfect topper. What I think is great is that now you can also get a turkey burger or buffalo burger, and the chicken is organic and free-range. It is the perfect blend of old-world and new-world sensibilities. The best place to sit is outside on a warm night. You have to put your name on a list, which can result in a long wait at this popular location. But there is a nice seating area where you can have a beer or cocktail and there is an old playhouse for the kiddies, so it's not that bad. Of course, you can't go to Hackney's without trying their famous brick of fried onions. Once you emerge from this mound of tasty goodness, with onions dribbling from your chin and the telltale shiny face, you will have been inducted into the Hackney's register of happy customers. Summer dresses, cold beer and Hackney's. Good times.

Given its location, scenery, historical nature and down to earth menu, I don't expect gourmet outta this place. Its like that old school place that everyone loves because its honest, dependable and they have massively delicious onion rings which come in a huge greasy clump! God, they're heaven sent. Their beer garden is super awesome and big enough to allow a sense of total relaxation and amity to come over me.......allowing me to pour way too much beer down me gullet too! Just realzzzz darn cute and one of a kind. Happy to work nearby and always know its there ready for me to sit, drink and consume fried onions. ;) Their wait staff is really pleasant too. Clearly the GM likes college aged girls.

I heard about this place from a buddy of mine. Decided to give it a whirl one night. We drove by it like four times without even knowing it. The street that it's on has no street lights. Whammy. Staff was welcoming and very friendly. Both of us heard glorious things about the Hackneyburger, so we both ordered one. I was a little disappointed with the lack of other ingredients [I didn't know that I had to request lettuce and tomato]. Double whammy. The burger itself was very good, though. Another plus is the bottomless fries. They weren't extraordinary, but I love bottomless anything. Overall, my experience was a-ok. I'd like to give this place another shot and try the buffalo burger and the inside-out burger. Hopefully I can find the place easier next time.

So, as an avid Food Network watcher, and an even more avid "Diners, Drive Ins, and Dives" program watcher (this place was featured on the show!), when the opportunity arised to check out the original Hackney's on Harms I jumped on it (my aunt lives a few minutes away from this location and I live all the way on the southside of Chicago)! First off, it's not as hard to find as everyone says! The sign for this joint is pretty prominent! And it's not THAT far off the main road. I loved that this began as someone's home and was converted into a restaurant. It gives it a very warm, and welcoming environment. Even the extension of the restaurant to the back patio feels like you could be hanging out in someone's backyard. Anyhoot, onto the food. If you're expecting some fancy presentation, go somewhere else. Hackney's is serious about their burgers. And that's because their burgers are seriously delicious. I had the Inside Out Burger and it was love at first bite. Cheddar and bacon stuffed inside a savory, juicy beef patty...hmmm hmm! I'm not a big red meat person like my father and brother but boy oh boy did I feel like one of the guys that night! Every bite was sensational. And BOTTOM-LESS fries?? It's like Red Robin without the cheesy franchise effect! Yum. Didn't try the french fried onion brick--bummer. But I'd definitely get next time. Hopefully it's as ominous as it seems. I had read that the service from the place was kind of mediocre. I can attest to that. Our waiter was really nice and did recommend a great bottle of the wine that my parents and brother and I loved, but he was pretty much MIA after our food was served. He did forget a fork or two and left our waters unfilled for a little bit but honestly, it was my graduation dinner and I was so euphoric from having just graduated that I didn't pay much attention to the details. Sorry, Yelpers! Should have been on my A game! All in all, I enjoyed my dinner here! Try out it sometime!

I think Hackney's evokes nostalgia in people who grew up coming here. If I were one of those people I would probably give it 4 stars, but I am not, so I'm giving it 3 stars. As another reviewer mentioned, it is a secluded location. There is a house on the property and the actual restaurant part that you eat in was the chicken coop back in the day (or that is what I've been told). The presentation of the onion brick is more interesting than how it tastes. It really is a brick of fried, shoe string onion rings. The appeal of the Hackney burger, for me, is that it comes on rye bread. I went with the 4 oz. burger and it was the perfect size. I ordered it medium but I think it was cooked just a bit under medium, which is still fine with me. Washed down with a Stella, my Hackney's meal hit the spot.

There are many reasons I prefer trips to Chicago: -There are no idiotiotic fake-politically-correct Californians giving me dirty looks for wearing sexy Fox Fur Hat -Great shopping on the Magnificent Mile for designer clothes and brazilian bikinis (I always shop for bikini in the snow, but thats another story) -Ira Glass.. if only he were in the dressing room whist shopping for brazilian bikini... -The HackneysBurger from famed Hackney's Tavern. If you too are in the neigborhood, don't miss a trip to Hackney's, for a scrumptious hackney's burger on black bread before a long night ov vodka drinking in the blizzards of Chicago.

After an afternoon art fair, me and my honey came upon Hackney's. We all know what they are famous for- their onion ring roll. As we waited for our outdoor table, the weather was great, we saw "most" tables had an onion roll on their table. As an aside, I was surprised their Milwaukee Ave location was closed. Well the franchise remains the same. Good, no very good burgers. Sorry, but I haven't diverted from what I know they serve well. We were seated promptly, drink orders taken, delivered, and asked if we could get the fried onion roll before our entree. Our wish was fulfilled. We did not go overboard as we wanted to leave room for our burgers. Big and extremely tasty, cooked to our request. What more can I say to end a beautiful Chicago summer afternoon.

The soul and the spirit of a classic Chicago haunt is epitomized by the tradition and quality continued by Hackney's on Harms. Dark, cozy, old school. There's a simple menu and it's expertly prepared -- juicy burgers, perfect fries and the onion block is a must. Never pretentious but you're always treated right.

This place feels like they are going out of business. Worn down, the smell of the dumpster wafts over now and then, a bun that might not have been delivered in the last 24 hours...

One of the first places I ate in Chicagoland while dating my future wife. I love the vibe, especially when it's nice enough to eat outside. It feels kind of like eating at the country club without any of the frill or pretense. Honestly, I'm not a huge fan of Hackneyburgers, but the vibe, the onion rings and big German beers will keep me comin' back.

I am giving this place two stars for the atmosphere. It's a really lovely place, with a wonderful garden to dine in. That being said, as a place that is known for its burgers, they are pretty bad. The meat is not treated gently, is heavy, completely unseasoned, and poorly cooked. My burger was very rare in places, and overdone in others. To add insult to injury, the bun was extremely heavy bread, and stale on top of that. In addition, Hackney's commits one of the great "burger sins", in that once topped with cheese, the top bun is placed on top of the cheese, literally gluing the bun to the top of the burger, and preventing you from dressing it as you like. I expected at least a burger on par with your basic Denny burger, and this didn't even come close. A BIG letdown, and I won't be returning.

I have long been a fan of the Hackney's enterprise. Every location has it's charm, but Hackney's on Harms is by far my favorite, especially in the summertime. The famous onion loaf is unbelievable and a must have at every visit. But don't over do it, you will not be happy later... The burgers here are awesome, but I most often order the marble rye rueben. One of the best I've had. The best part about this particular Hackney's location is the outdoor seating in the summer. Set in a forest-like atmosphere, you sit among the tall trees lit with twinkling lights and toss back a spicy bloody mary made at the outdoor cabana bar. The unique ambiance of the patio makes me long for warm weather again. Inside the restaurant is small and cozy, but makes that wait on the weekends unbearable. If you have never visited, wait until summer and sit outside, you won't regret it!

Horrible service!! We went on Tuesday evening. We were told there was a 10 minute wait so we went to the bar. The bartender asked me what I wanted and I asked for water. He replied, "That's boring!" It was very rude. He gave me the smallest glass they have. We were called one second later to our table. (That was a quick 10 minutes) Our server did not greet us or offer to explain the menu. ( I have visited before) She was extremely slow and unkind. Halfway through our meal another server came up to us and told us our server went home for the evening. I asked if she was sick and he said "No she's just had a long day and wanted to go home." Very strange! What kind of place lets a server leave in the middle of dinner. Our new server was very slow. We ordered 2 desserts and he only brought us one spoon. We asked for another spoon and 2 forks and he only brought us 1 fork. Duh! Probably won't be back. Although my buffalo burger was tasty. Service needs to improve!

I used to come here all the time when I lived in the area. It's still the same cozy joint with good eats. The onion loaf was great. Could have used a little more time in the frier. But it still hit the spot. The burger was nice and juicy and of course I had the fries. Very laid back atmosphere. This is a great place to bring a date.

Ok went to Hackneys for a company party and have to say from all the good reviews from my co-workers I really was disappointed. I like the onion loaf alot but the burger was ok, the place was so busy and service was not so great. Very expensive not worth it to me I wouldnt come back.

It pains me to only be able to give Hackney's three stars. Maybe it's that what was fantastic as a kid doesn't measure up, but it seems more likely that the cost of operating the place got too high and they had to take some shortcuts on the food quality. I've been coming here since 1966, and paying for my own meals here since probably 1985. I've moved away from the area, so now only make it there 2-3 times a year. The burger is still very tasty. But it's certainly smaller than it was in the 70s, 80s, and early 90. If I had to guess, I'd say 25% smaller. The onion rings are good, but what used to be a half order is now a full order. The french fries have gone to Sysco commissary hell. But the rye bread is still outstanding, and eating at the bar on a lazy Saturday summer afternoon watching a baseball game is still a blast. And friends of mine who have had the fish on Fridays think highly of it. So if I want the experience, I make my way up there. But if I just want a burger, I'll probably go to someplace like Paradise Pup instead. I prefer the original Harms location to the Lake location, mostly because it's a little more consistent and cozy when they're busy. I really don't like any of the other locations, there is a noticeable drop-off in quality.

Awesome burgers and onion rings are not to be missed. Great pour at the bar.

Hackney's is a Chicago staple, and I love the Glenview location. If you're from Chicago and have never eaten at a Hackney's shame on you and do yourself a favor go to one, get a burger, some fried onions, and a couple beers.

This is the worst dining experience I have ever had. The water glasses all had old lipstick stains on them! Then a fresh set straight out of the dishwater were brought out and they had food caked on them. Plus we waited for our drinks for over 20 minutes. So we ate our appetizer with nothing to drink!

A 70 year-old, family owned and operated local business, yes please! This place is a total throwback from the long mahogany bar to the no nonsense service. In the winter it is limited to the main restaurant that cozily holds about 100 people. It's fair to say that most of those 100 are on a first name basis with the staff but newcomers get the same familiar service. Summer is prime time here. They have an outdoor patio that holds three times as many people as the inside. On a Friday night, the wait can be up to an hour but it goes quickly with the help of a variety of imports on draft, I always get a Steigl from Austria. DO NOT SIT BY THE PLAYHOUSE!!! If you are looking for a kid free dinner ask to be seated away from the playhouse that is always full of kids. On the other hand, if you have kids, by all means, tear it up. They appear to be having a blast. For food, definitely get the onion loaf. It's deep-fried and unhealthy but really tasty and quite unique as far as onion rings go. Entrees, the Hackney Burger is tops. I prefer it to all of the new burgers they've been adding to the menu to reach the masses. Stick to The Original with cheddar cheese. The dark rye is what they recommend but I always get the bun. Both are fresh baked at Hackney's on Lake down the street. If you don't want a burger, they have an amazing cold turkey sandwich. They actually roast a turkey and slice it. It's like Thanksgiving! I make it a club and add bacon, also on fresh baked bread. Sometimes I get a French Dip with provolone and sauteed mushrooms, YUM!! Over all, the place is a lot of fun and the kind of spot I like taking people to. People are always impressed and ask how I know about this place. Other info: Half Price Bottles of Wine on Mondays and Tuesdays Live Jazz on he Patio on Thursdays... bring a date P.S. PARKING IS A PAIN! sometimes the lot will be full but the restaurant will e virtually empty. Do not be fooled! The lot is tiny and I think it is comprised of mostly staff vehicles. GET A BIGGER LOT HACKNEY'S!!! Park on the street if you have to but don't get discouraged andjust keep driving by.

I haven't been here for years, but I had pleasant thoughts of the onion loaf last night. Wonderful burgers served on rye - it's quite the insitution. I remember trying buffalo (er, bison) for the first time here as well. Delicious. I might have to head on over next time I'm visiting the folks.

Their fried onions are really good and their food is really good. However, it's very greasy so be prepared not to wear your "fine dining" clothing to this fun eatery!!!!!

I really want to like Hackney's. I mean, I grew up around here and have fond memories. But the reality? Ick. Just not good. Service is average. Food is greasy and bland. Even the outdoor setting is looking tired and a bit dirty. It's better in my memory. Sorry...

This place is in serious need of a redo - menu and the restaurant. I thought they were known for their burgers but it was very disappointing as was the service.

3 stars based solely on the loverly outdoor patio in the summer. sitting under giant shady birch trees on a nice sunny day = fab. the food is a'ight. they've got the basics, sammys, burgers, fries and the like. their claim to fame is an onion ring concoction which could just as easily be a heap of fried shoelaces swimming in grease. it's a disgusting greasy disaster... and this is coming from a gal who loves grease!

There on Friday for a "juicy burger" so I asked for the blue cheese burger which was without a doubt THE WORST BLUE CHEESE BURGER I HAVE EVER GOTTEN IN MY 46 YEAR LIFE!!! It was a dry oval UNSEASONED burger on a tasteless bun with a SMALL smear of a pretty bland tasting blue cheese spread. NO LETTUCE NO TOMATO NO MAYO NO NOTHING. ALONG SIDE THE MINUTE SERVING OF THE SCARIEST TASTING COLESLAW EVER (A CROSS BETWEEN BLEACH AND BUG SPRAY, I' M SERIOUS). The only reason I have given 2 stars rather than none is that the onion loaf was good and the taste of the Reuben from my daughters plate was excellent but whoever was doing the burgers needs to rethink the presentation of something they are making customers pay nearly $9.00 for!!! Also the charge of $2.70 for a glass of fountain soda is nothing short of highway robbery, I don't care if it is all you can drink. Sad.

Definitely cozier than it's roomier counterpart on Lake Ave. but it's got a vibe of its own. It's great for a lazy day when you're craving a patty melt.

There's a little white playhouse in the corner of the outdoor seating area that I used to play in when I was little. And while that is looking a bit decrepit these days, Hackney's hasn't changed a bit. The onions. Gotta get the onions. Smother them in ketchup. By the end, the fork will be thrown to the side and your fingers will be red and greasy. Mmmmmm.... And the burgers. And the salads. And the soups. Everything. Hackney's is yummy. Inside: dark wood and cozy booths with a bar serving the old-timers (or regulars) who are probably wearing deck shoes and a polo shirt, but anyways... Outside: awesome outdoor dining. Bring bugspray (especially for dinner). Seriously. Its kinda in the shade, surrounded by trees and shubbery and, well, thats where the bugs hang out. Good times. Hackney's makes me think of summer and families and nice people. Whatever that means....

wow this place is tiny. I LOVE IT! I swear I am in the downstairs of my grandma's house. Very homey and great food. The bar takes up one side of the restaurant while the other half is pretty tight with tables. We came at a off time to enjoy dinner as a party of 4 and didn't have to wait. If you come on a weekend I would suggest planing on getting there earlier than when you want.

Let's be clear...there may be better burgers out there...but the whole Hackney experience is what I go here for...the onion ring loaf....the Hackney burger...the cole slaw...the butt steak...the drinks...and the patio in the summer...my family and I have been going there for 30 years...so we are predjudiced...and we are not gonna change our opinion...

Burgers the size of a silver dollar for $10, no wonder they've been in business for 70 years! We raced home and scrubbed our hands, face and feet because this place was so gross. Bill of $38 = slab of greasy onions, a bacon cheddar burger the size of my palm and an "original" burger a little bigger than the sliders at White Castle. The frozen "table" fries put me off even more! I don't like fries as a side but with two "burgers" ordered, you would think that EACH burger would come with a side order. No wonder the waitress called it the table fries. Wrong place to even consider on this romantic night.

The best Irish style bar/grill in ILLINOIS! Definately check out this restuarant! Hackney's on Harms is the ORIGINAL Hackney's that was opened don't be fouled by the one down a few blocks away. My dad got a job at Hackneys when he was a teen as the chef. His best friend's dad was the head bartender at the time and his friend worked as a waiter I believe. The summer patio is great, but I advise staying away from it since it is the 17th year of the cacada where the bugs come up in the masses so outdoor seating isn't your best choice this season.

Wow! What a great burger! I went for lunch today and had the Inside Out burger on dark rye bread.. Thats a 8 oz burger stuffed with cheddar cheese and bacon. It was so moist and full of flavor. They also give you lettuce, tomato, and onion on the side to build it yourself as well as cole slaw and french fries. Great burger, great service, great place! I'll be back!

Going with a group of 5 or more ? Definitely head to the Lake Street location (just east of Waukegan Rd - where they can accommodate larger groups - AND it always helps to call first for "reservations".) But couples and/or parties of 4 or less should head over to the original Hackney's on Harms which has the same good food but in a more more intimate, other (past) worldly atmosphere with a nameless kind of charm about it. Unless you simply must have your burger on a traditional bun - definitely have it on the outstanding dark rye with (as reviews of the Lake St. location have suggested - unless you hate onions order the burger with the full specturm of onion options ( the raw and grilled that come with the burger- comp on request) and just go for broke and get a FULL order of the fried onion rings (only $1+ more than the half order;- they make for a yummy appetizer and an excellent extra layer of indulgent goodness when added on top of the burger. Communal fries come with most orders and are better than average. To those of us who grew up eating or at least knowing about Hackney's - NOT ordering a Burger (especially on the Pumpernickel rye) almost seems sacrosanct - but there are other good options (many go for the Reuben or the Frrench DIp - or the unusually good Vegetarian grilled cheese and tomato (on your choice of bread - I recommend the dark rye.) I don't mean to exaggerate or raise undue expectations - this is just a really good burger (including the Buffalo burger which is remarkably moist - considering the lean-ness.) Both the Lake St. and Harms locations are worthy considerations for the right kinds of occasions.

Can't beat this place hands down for the best Patty Melts ever and a cold bottle of beer. The onion rings alone is a meal. Always friendly and homey. Really a treat to go there. Out of the way and real neat history. Family owned and operated. Will not be disappointed.

Besides the geriatrics and suits this place is alright. Good food and a cool atmosphere that feels like the adjacent forest preserve, a welcome respite from other nearby options (i.e. the food court in the mall). The Hackney Burger is a sure bet. Avoid the buffalo burger.

Hackney's is an old establishment, known for their Hackney burger. I tend to stay away from Hackney's in the winter (just because the inside is kind of dark and filled with the elderly), but in the summer they have a huge open patio and it's a great place for a burger, an onion brick, and a beer. Usually crowded, but fast, efficient service.
