Wow, this Starbucks has gotten bigger and better since I was a 9 year-old slowly weaning myself off the hot chocolate and lemon knots and transitioning into mochas. Memories...By the way, does anyone remember when Starbucks sold those lemon knot cookies? I really loved studying here and all the stuffed chairs, tables, and outlets are a dream. It's still my favorite Starbucks since the one on Wells is no longer a 24 hour joint. Regardless of how busy it constantly is, the flow is always moving, the floors are clean, and the clutter is minimal. It's exactly what you want a Starbucks to be. The staff here is so friendly and efficient. No matter how busy they get, they keep a smile on their faces and a cheerful conversation in your mind. I was absolutely thrilled to find the bakery case jam packed with goodies at 3 o' clock in the afternoon. It's like they combined the homey welcoming feeling of the Caribou that used to be across the street with the sleek sophisticated style of Starbucks to appease all the demographics of the neighborhood. It's always nice to come back here after a tennis game at the park or a walk through The Botanical Gardens.
Currently sitting here writing this review about the place I am sitting at. Its relaxing...I like it and the staff is nice. This place bustles with activity pretty much throughout the whole day, and its spacious inside with alot of comfortable seating. The Iced chai was ok....I kinda have had better, but the Iced Americano was good to go. Like with my Foodstuffs review....parking can get pretty sparse, with the PD sending out its CSO to look for parking violations so you really have to be aware of the 2 hour mark for parking....unless you go 2-3 blocks west to park at the park. Pics posted.
This Starbucks is always packed, but they are fast and the staff is friendly.

Foodstuffs was my Yoda in learning to love gourmet food stores. It's been around almost as long as I can remember, started in 1979, with its narrow aisles filled floor to ceiling with delicious, exotic and carefully crafted foods. In high school, I would save my spending money to buy a little container of their scrumptious English Toffee. It came (and still comes in) a Chinese food box with the cheery green-and-white Foodstuffs sticker on top. It is so delicious - buttery and crunchy with fine quality chocolate and nuts - that one product turned me off of mass-marketed candies forever. Foodstuffs was also one of the first places to offer tastes of their various products. My mother and I still run the circuit when we are there - sampling a bite of cake, a chunk of cheese, or a new spread...and it's hard to walk out without something new and tasty in your bag, so they are definitely doing something right. From sweets, to fresh meats and seafood, to the sandwich bar, to the cheese bin, to bowls and bowls of prepared foods, Foodstuffs continues to thrive and is always a treat to visit. Excellent spot to pick up lunch, food for a pot-luck, a housewarming gift, or something new and exciting for the pantry. After many repeat visits, you may find yourself a Jedi-master of delicious food...or at least a fat and happy civilian.
Red Pepper Dip! Red Pepper Dip! California Sandwich! Red Pepper Dip! Red Pepper Dip! I blacked out; what happened? This place has some of the best cracker spreads around. Did I mention the red pepper dip? They also carry a wide array of upscale food. If you're willing to spend a little more this is the place to go to grab any meats, cheeses, or bread.
Take a trip to France without leaving the North Shore. Try some of the bread(ooh-la-la) or specialty cheeses, and you'll be in heaven. I'm a baker, but their rich brownies blow me away-no way am I playing with caramel and marshmallows, they're too easy to burn. Chopped salads are also fantastic. Be aware that food here is pricey. Also, this is a favorite grazing spot of North Shore ladies so, although the service is excellent, you may wait in line for quite a while if you come at noon. I've suggested that they take carryout orders by email and phone to prepare in advance-maybe they'll listen.

Another great foodie location. I stopped here for breakfast and had an omelet with salsa and a salad. This was a very pleasant experience. I hope they pay the workers a fair wage.
On the way into the garden with the family, we decided to grab lunch somewhere near Glencoe. Our first option ended up being closed permanently, so we opted for Meg's Cafe. We walked in, and I thought... ooh. How very clean. It's located in a wonderful walkable part of (what I think is) the Glencoe town center. Everything is trimmed nice, the inside is very white, it's just nice and clean. So what did I get? The fish tacos, of course. The risk paid off, and overturned my overall philosophy regarding fish tacos (before this, I thought they were an abomination before the Lord). With the right fish, blackened, good salsa and fresh vegetables, it turns out that fish tacos can taste good. And these tasted great. My wife had a tomato bisque that was excellent. Smooth, bright and with just the right balance of tomato versus oil / broth. We finished things off with a couple of cookies from the bakery. It's been 4 months so I don't remember the exact flavors; I just remember they were as fantastic as the rest of the meal. The best part about our lunch was that even though the cafe is surrounded by million-dollar houses, lunch didn't set us back an arm and a leg. Sounds good to me! If you're in the northern suburbs and looking for a great place to catch lunch, Meg's Cafe is highly recommended.
Meg's Cafe? An Apple a Day? I've been confused by what their official name is ever since moving to Glencoe, but they can call themselves whatever they want as long as they continue making delicious tomato soup and tuna salad. I haven't branched out from that combo in the half a dozen times I've been to Meg's Cafe/An Apple a Day because it's that good. This is a great spot for lunch (closed Sundays) when you're looking for something a bit fancier than the other "order from the counter" spots in town. I recently took my kids for the first time on a Saturday. We not only scored a table for 7 people right away (whoo hoo), but the service was relatively fast and their kids meals were way better than what my kids normally eat. They went to town on their order of spaghetti and I couldn't help, but steal some of their grilled cheese to go along with my favorite tomato soup. I also recently learned that they are open for dinner. While it doesn't look like my soup/salad combo is on the dinner menu, it looks worth checking out.

Cinnamon roll. Get the cinnamon roll. You can also get it Togo, the donuts too but it's always better hot! We went for Mother's Day-made a reservation so we didn't have to wait or anything. the restaurant is very cool, much like summerhouse Santa Monica in Chicago but more quaint with an antique yet modern feel... Does that even make sense? The bar is very cool-look retro but has top of the line cocktails. I got a ginger margarita which was pretty tasty! The chorizo hash was good but a little Lukewarm like it was sitting there waiting to be order but the flavor was great-wish the eggs weren't over hard and were over easy and there was a lack of salsa verde sauce. My mom loved her lobster eggs Benedict though-ate it all and she never eats everything on the plate! Oh and our service was excellent -greeted and chatted with as well as our server was very attentive but not annoying or pressuring. I'll be sure to recommend this place
I hate bringing up that old joke, but... The food here just wasn't that good, and the portions were so small! Seriously, though, the food here tastes pretty good, but the portions really were teeny, and every dish felt like it was missing something (usually a starch). We met another couple here for dinner, and were all just pretty underwhelmed with our experience. First, it's VERY loud, and dark, but also full of kids, which is a weird combination. Second, we wanted to share an app, which the waitress assured us would be fine, but then when it arrived, it was teeny. Teeny! one bite per person. I'm fine with not-sharing apps, but the waitstaff should be clear that they are single portions. Third, the whole meal just FLEW. everything was TEENY, and we wanted to sit around and hang out, but literally ordering to clearing our (4 bite) dessert took under an hour. I think many people were drinking a lot more than us, and better able to linger, but being with child, that wasn't in the cards for us. The food-- what there is of it-- does taste good! but I think for what we spent, I could taste much better food at plenty of other places. Sorry, Guildhall, I don't think I'll be coming back.
Prepare yourself that it will be very loud and you'll be sitting very close to other parties. Not really a place to sit back and relax. The army of staff are over attentive - refilling water constantly, hovering while you look at the menu, walking around in constant droves. Too much of a good thing! I had the carrot fennel soup which was really good. Cashew milk gave it a yummy nutty taste. Drinks are pricey. $14 for a tiny "carafe" of wine that was about 1 glass. Also had the Farm to Bowl Salad. Good combo of green beans, chick peas and a tasty Parmesan cheese. Needed a little more zip to the dressing though. Very busy place so must be popular.

I simply do not understand the negative reviews. As a Texas-transplant (I lived there for 30 years, including three in San Antonio), I've sampled a LOT of Mexican food, both great and not-great. Guajuanto is one of my favorite Mexican-food restaurants of all time. The quality of the food itself is fabulous: clean, local, seasonal and often organic. The dishes always exceed my expectations. This place excels even in something as simple as a salad dressing: Last night I had the (organic) arugula salad and couldn't decide between the lime vinagrette and chipotle dressing so the waiter was nice enough to bring me samples of each. (The service there has always been extraordinarily good.) I chose the lime but was torn because the chipotle was also stunningly tasty (have to go back soon for that one.) Their chicken flautas are maybe the best I've ever had and the tamales I had last night were delish. Anyone with a hankering for great Mexican food to warm you in what may be another brutal winter should give this place a try. I consider it the very best Mexican food within driving distance.
Same crew as the closed Holey Guacamole. They basically expanded to a bigger place and renamed it. Foodwise, it's Americanized Mexican food and the El Mocajete is fun to eat and delicious. Besides that, I usually get the chile relleno and my husband gets the enchilada. We come often because it's a family restaurant and there are lots of kids/babies on any given night. The wait is looooong on Fri and Sat night so come early if your kid doesn't want to wait. I love the staff as they're really friendly. Just wish it wasn't so crowded there.
My family of four went to Guanajuato for the first time on Friday night. The restaurant was busy but we were seated right away. Our waiter was friendly but rushed. We ordered the fresh guacamole to start; it was very fresh, but on the mild/bland side. We mixed in some of the salsa to spice it up a bit. I ordered tilapia tacos; they were good, but not great - again, a bit bland. The rice was a bit dried out and the beans were OK, not great. The menu lists recommended wine for each meal, so I ordered the wine recommended for my dish. I didn't look closely, so I was surprised when my tilapia tacos were served with a Pinot Noir - I was expecting a white wine. The wine was good, but we were stunned when we got the bill, as it was $13/glass (the price was not listed on the menu). My husband ordered beef tacos and said they were very good. Our children each ordered the children's steak tacos (great kids' menu) and really enjoyed them. All in all we thought the food was average, the prices too high (close to $80 for a casual Mexican meal for two adults and two kids), and the service was well-intended but a bit harried. Guanajuata also had two mariachis strolling from table to table, but it seemed that one of these men couldn't sing to save his life. They were nice, though, and gave us their card: Gorgeous George and Ferdinand Fantastico!

The Garden View Café

Wonderful setting within the botanic garden with a beautiful outdoor patio surrounded by a water garden view. The food is average and overpriced but has a variety of options to make most people happy. beer and wine are also offerings here if u need a pickme up. Just expect inflated pricing since they are within the botanic garden. Note you do have to pay the entrance to access the restaurant so if you aren't coming for the garden I don't recommend coming here. Although if you bike, run or walk here it's free and is a nice biking stop. The garden charges per vehicle/parking fee.
The botanic gardens are undeniably amazing, and being able to sit outside on a gorgeous day enjoying an omelette is a real treat. Went with a friend and "made" my own omelette. They don't have a huge selection on their menu, but there are options for most. I suspect it would be great for kids and picky eaters. Coffee is good, not great. Sit outside of you can.
Beautiful views but the menu isn't what it used to be. Gone are the creative breakfasts and replaced with a choose your ingredients 3-egg omelette. No egg whites despite the sign saying they are available upon request. Have some coffee, enjoy the views and enjoy breakfast somewhere else.
