Great subs and sausages! Tried their hot oven grinder (I requested pastrami and salami). The bread was lightly toasted, perfect soft texture, flavorful, and piles of meat on there. Better than any sub sandwich from a chain restaurant. I would definitely go back for their subs. Bought their giant hot dogs, Italian sausage, and jalapeno & cheese brats to take home and cook. Grilled them up, and they were absolutely perfect with great flavors (a little salty, but normal for sausages). I'm used to going to Wurst Kitchen in Aurora, and these sausages were right on par with Wurst Kitchen's. We had their German potato salad, but I didn't like it much. It was very sweet. I'm used to a stronger vinegar and bacon flavor. I'm guessing most people would like Josef's a lot because of that sweetness, but I won't be ordering it again. Service was friendly, fast, attentive. There was a constant steady stream of customers coming in around lunch time on a Thursday. Most came to get the subs. It seemed like everyone was in and out within 5-10 minutes with their food. Staff greeted everyone right away, took orders, got food out fast. Looked like everyone left happy, didn't hear any complaints.

Anything associated with cuts of Pork are top-notch, especially the Hot Italian Sausage... very tasty with just the right amount of heat. I hosted a BBQ last fall featuring the Beer & Onion Brats...a hands down crowd stopper. The "Ditka Style" Pork Chops grilled with a kiss of fire and served with fresh quality rye bread slathered with butter offer the perfect compliment to the beer of your choice. "Da Coach" would be proud! The salad and pasta offerings are plentiful, however you would expect that from any quality deli. By the way, order these type of things in moderation. Anything associated with the word "Italian" are top notch, as in Beef and Sub Sandwich...very tasty. Drop the thought of ordering a Chicken Salad Sub and ask for a Meatball Grinder. Anything associated with cuts of Steak, start over from the beginning of this review...hold on a minute. Throw in some Peppers & Onions and I'll think about it!

The easiest review I've wrote so far. * gourmet sandwiches * ample serving size * reasonable pricing * toasted a plus * go visit The staff was really friendly too! So friendly it caught me off guard.

I tried Josef's due to the reviews on Yelp. It's tucked in the corner of the strip mall. Not being native to Geneva, it took some exploring. Once I found it, I walked up to the counter and asked, "What do you recommend for a first timer here?" The gentlemen behind the counter suggested the Italian, as it is the most popular. He also suggested the Potato salad & a soda from Cicero Beverage. I added some chips. I'll definitely be going back soon.

Incredible Subs!! Soft bread and if you choose to get it toasted you WONT REGRET IT!! Quality Boars Head Meats but always ask if their have any daily specials as you never know when you might be tempted by something magical they have simmering in the kitchen :) I always order a full-size even though it's doubtful you'll finish it in one sitting... they do make the perfect snack for later. Give them a try and if the food doesn't make you smile I promise the genuine friendliness and care of those heroes working the counter will!!

Exceptional as usual! Every time I go in I feel like I've just walked into an old friends house. Always friendly and willing to spend time making sure they provide the best service. Never had a bad cut of meat and never been steered wrong by recommendations. Keep up the great work!

Listen these guys have some quality meats but you pay out the wazo! Who ever said this place is inexpensive is nuts they could clean out their display cases a lot better also. Good product for sure but a lot of there stuff is hit or miss. Check out Elburn for a real treat. Starts with a R. Top notch

This was a great find! I was new to the area and looking for short ribs to use for Korean BBQ beef. I couldn't find them anywhere. The guys at Josef's didn't have quite what I needed, but were able to recommend a similar cut of meat that would work well for what I was making. The meal turned out great! I've since been back multiple times and am always satisfied with whatever I pick up. Their burgers are especially delicious - we've made the jalapeno and the bacon cheddar for guests and everyone always says how they're better than most restauants. And the people who work there always friendly and helpful. Definitely a neighborhood favorite!

Tried this place out for the first time and I love it! Fresh meat and pasta salads for days. When they say 10' subs they mean 10' subs!! No tall tales here. Great job guys!

Don't ride your bike there, because your over-eatin' body ain't gunna have fun riding home. Their sandwiches are unforgettable. MEAAATZ, They are so nice to you, welcoming, suggesting what to have. Sides, pops, chips, what sandwich to eat. Oh man. There is a reason this place has 5 stars over and over again.

Sometimes it is worth driving a little further or paying a little more just to have someone really care about their customers.. When you walk into Josef's you really are treated like family .. I bought all my Christmas fish there & Pat Jr stayed with me to explain where they get all their fresh fish & how to even cook it so it is prefect... as they became more crowded , he never blinked an eye or said , hold on I have to help another customer .. ... This place is amazing .. God Bless their whole family ... Buona Natale'

Food- very flavorful meats, the italian sausage and cheeseburgers are outstanding. Just all around a great place Service- very good service, all nice people, very helpful and caring about their customers

I went there one day for lunch with some work associates. Best deli sandwich I've ever had! The sandwich I had was both delicious and filling, all for a relatively cheap price. I can't wait to take my family back and try some different sandwiches. However, I don't think my family could fit in the limited seating they have. Not a problem, we'll take them to go.

  • David H.

By far - the best sandwiches around. Josefs meats and sausage are excellent as well. Josef's special Italian sausage is our family favorite. And when their grill is going... just flat out delicious.

  • Mike R.

Outstanding! The meats are great but I don't think enough people really pay attention to their daily lunch specials and there fantastic grinders. Just a pinch high on the cost but extremely worth it for the huge orgasmic taste. I'd pay more if they wanted lol

I had the unique fortune to review two separate items here. We came for lunch and grabbed a couple of sandwiches; an American sub, and a Santa Fé. While we waited, I decided to grab cheese ravioli and their refrigerated tomato sauce for dinner that night. The sandwiches were both really good. Definitely fresh vegetables and while I normally don't care for Boar's Head prepackaged stuff, their deli meats are quite good. They take their time making your sandwich, so feel free to wander around and look at some crazy imported Italian food while you wait. Next time, I'd have to try their burgers. Anyways, that night we had the ravioli... boiling it in salted water for 6 minutes, then draining it and combining it with the tomato sauce. I've never made my own homemade pasta, but as far as I can tell, this was close enough - wonderfully cheesy, just the right amount of dough. The tomato sauce was fresh and nicely acidic; not sweet like some jarred sauces can be. Plus, I bought enough sauce to freeze for later! The next time I'm in Geneva, I would definitely go out of my way to find this place, although from the looks of the line, it looks like everyone else already has.

I am totally in love with their Italian Sausage. I live in the city, but my parents came down and brought some and it was delicious! My favorite in the city is Fiore's, but when i'm in the western burbs, I make a stop here before heading home.

Everything that you get here will be DELICIOUS!!! Try the Joes special Italian sausage, fabulous! potato salad, fabulous, hot specials of the day can include chicken marsala, chicken piccata, chicken parm, eggplant parm, all are wonderful and a quick homemade dinner. Our favorites are the Italian subs (BEST EVER!) and the homemade cheeseburgers and sausages. If you think the prices are a tad high, remember you are not cooking tonight! but serving extra high quality meats to your family. This is my favorite lunch place in the tri cities. In the spring/summer they grill, and you just cant beat that!!!! LOVE THIS PLACE!!!

Josef's was recommended to me as a local butch / meat shop. Not the sandwich shop i see in all the reviews. I called to order a 3 lb beef tenderloin. I was told that they only sold 5-7 lbs or 7-10 lbs - and that a 3 lb tenderloin was out of the question. I thought that was really odd - it's not like that cut of meat is unpopular. Anyway, wanting to support a local store, I was let down. A chain down the road had no problem accommodating my request.

Stopped in for lunch on 4/11, with my wife. We each ordered hot sub sandwiches. They were larger than we expected. Ordered a coleslaw, and it was very tasty. The server also gave a large sample of potato salad that was quite tasty. Very pleased with our meals, and the left-overs.

In my hunt for the great pastrami New York style I thought I give Josef's after discovering them via Google maps. It was not the ultimate pastrami but it was the closest to it in the areas of ground I go stomping. I think it would have been the treasure if they had rye as an option but for some reason the deli's I've been hitting don't have rye. I took it on a sub bun toasted w/swiss cheese. The pastrami itself was delicious as was the swiss cheese, being on a dub bun wasn't as bad as I thought. It could have been toasted more but that's my fault the server asked if it looked toasted enough and I said yes but the meat was still a bit chilled but next time I'll know to say toast the chill out of it. It was a good portion and I ate only ate half (portions, portions the blood pump repair man, diet advisor and of course lovely bride all say) so I was a good patient an hubby and portioned it into two meals. So when I consume part two I'll be certain to toast the chill out and who knows it may make me forgo the ultimate New York pastrami on rye. Either way the going out the door on Josef's is keep the lights on i'll be back

Between, Pasquale, Pat, Joe and everyone else, this place is a real treat. True quality products, great food and and an atmosphere that kindles memories of a ethnic Italian American neighborhoods that are almost completely lost. Come for the food, and come back for the food and people and community.. If you see them Grilling outside in the summer for the love of God! Stop and eat something. Subs, beef, hot lunches, lemon cookies, meat, sausage it's all outstanding

Josef's Deli has one of the best chicken salad sandwiches I've ever tasted. It comes on a ginormous sub and is definitely enough for two servings (especially if bought with a side of their fab pasta salad). They have quite a few enticing Italian desserts in the fridge that I have yet to try; I really don't know how long I can resist temptation. The only thing I dislike is how they're closed on Mondays. I've forgotten several times and stop by in order to start my week off right, ending up thoroughly disappointed... but that's my fault, not the deli's!

Josef's is the best. Go on a Thursday for lunch and get a Stromboli Sandwich, and wear comfortable pants. The food is always fresh, the place is clean, and the service is BEYOND exceptional. The guys treat everyone who walks in the door like family (the family you like!). Summer is almost here, so get there to pick up something good for the grill! I like their Italian sausage, they have many fresh made varieties! They are a full service butcher shop, and also have the best eggplant parmigiana

  • Alex A.

Three reasons to go to Josef's: 1) Meat is good. 2) Josef's meat is exceptional. (Cut, Sliced, and/or on a Sandwich) 3) Service with a smile, maybe even a laugh. The brats are made with no-hormone pork, and the flavor is outstanding. Check it.

I just found out about this place by taking a wrong turn off the road. I've been here now two times in the past two weeks. I first ordered a sub-sandwich to go, and man was it good! The second time I took my girlfriend and we both got subs and a salad to go. The owner gave me two sausages to try since I'm Polish and love sausage. Got to say these homemade sausages were great! They truly care about the business and the food shows with their handwork. I will be coming back many times and might cater future events with these guys! I lived so close for years and never knew about this place!

I have been here 3 times. 1st time Italian sausage. 2nd time Italian sausage and homemade potato salad 3rd time Italian sausage, potato salad, and premade giant hamburgers. I traveled 45 miles for the best little deli I have ever been to. Everything I got here was fantastic. Very helpful and cool guys working here. Thanks. I'll be back soon

Excellent deli! The sub sandwiches they sell there are the biggest and the best I ever had, the photo show here does not do the size justice!!

Another awesome local gem. Great place for all your fresh deli meats and cheeses. It's grilling season now, so a great place to pick up some sausage too!

Forget the Housewives of St Charles & Geneva. This is a Convenient Meals Heaven for Man Caves across the Fox River. Josef's is the closest thing to the Bronx Salumerias I grew up with. Honestly, you could probably get away with shopping here for 90% of your dinners. This small deli sells good quality deli meats, ready-to-cook dinners, frozen pastas, etc. Sandwiches. Italian Sausages. Steaks for grilling. Stuffed Patties. Lasagna. Just like a Momma used to make!

This place is fabulous. A little pricey for a deli but definitely some of the best sandwiches and salads in the area. I'm a huge sandwich aficionado and I've never been disappointed with my food here. The portions are huge and I always have enough sandwich for two meals. The staff is always very welcoming and friendly and really seem to know their stuff. In the summer they grill out over the weekends, I've never had the burgers but they are huge and look divine. Will have to update once I give them a try.

Awesome deli sandwich. Old fashioned soda was a nice touch. He gave me a sample of potato salad which was delicious.

This place is AMAZING! It's a very clean deli and it's always stocked with tempting treats. The guys are super helpful, too. I love the stuffed burgers. Their chicken salad is among my favorites as well. The other day we bought a roast and the guys told us how to cook it and even gave us some of their favorite seasoning...on the house!!! Josef's never disappoints :)

Hands down the best place for a sub in the entire Fox Valley Area. The toasted subs are out of this world. I suggested this place to my co-workers and every one of them were raving about it.

  • Rebecca M.

Honestly the best deli sandwiches ever. We paid less than $20 for two gigantic subs (it ended up being two meals for two of us) plus a side of potato salad. They use Boar's Head deli products which are top-quality. I had the Santa Fe, which was pretty spicy (although I did ask for spicy mustard instead of mayo), but delicious. My boyfriend had the Oven Grinder which was AMAZING - highly recommend. And the potato salad was so good - it has apparently been a family recipe for decades.

I've been coming here for years. Family owned and operated, just like the old days. Everything is as tasty as you will find anywhere. They are famous for their Italian Sausage that is made fresh daily from scratch. What can I say? It's making my mouth water as I think about it. To Adriano who had the bad experience: I hear you bro. I would have been upset too. Just remember that this is a small business trying to get by. Their credit card policy is in effect to protect their already thin margins and to keep the prices down for the customers.

This weekend, I got the Italian sausage with broccoli rabe inside. It was outstanding, and unlike anything I've had before. My wife and I don't buy much meat (she's a vegetarian) but we discovered Josef's years ago at the Festival of the Vine in Geneva. They were serving sausages, but also the eggplant Parmesan. Both were as good as I've tried, and my wife is now hooked on their pasta. In fact, their eggplant Parm from the cooler and prepared in our oven is as good or better than most restaurants make (and MUCH less expensive). Also fantastic - the gnocchi. I highly recommend Josef's for an easy gourmet meal at home.

Rib-eye steak sandwich is to die for. They serve them when they grill out kn the weekends. Also, the burger is delicious. Take a pack of four hamburgers home and divide up into 6-8 when you get home because they are huge and yummy! Great Boars Head lunch meat too. Great staff and very friendly.

I'm sorry but people throw around the word "expensive" way too much. A $100,000 car is expensive... an $8 sandwich that uses top quality ingredients that you can essentially get 2 meals out of is not "expensive". You are paying for a more quality lunchmeat & cheese which Boar's Head is known for. Add .75 for a side of potato salad with a sandwich,..not bad at all. Cannolis are excellent..Meats look awesome. Can't wait to get some steaks from here. I've had a few sandwiches & they have been just soo good it's unbelieveable that I never tried this place before. Staff is very friendly. I like to call my order in & still have to wait sometimes since they tend to get quite busy.

A family favorite! The hamburgers are out of this world- they won our family's best hamburgers in Kane (& some DuPage) county's contest. Italian sausage is out of this world. Lobster ravioli, so good. You can't go wrong here! Everything is perfect, service outstanding!

  • John Q.

Get the Italian Sub! OK, look....just get it. This is the best Italian Sub in the world, even better than Momma B's in Orlando, but then they aren't Italian. The staff is super friendly and will explain anything they have to display and even how to prepare it...yum. The frozen fresh pasta is my next venture, especially the stuffed raviolis. Ok, so what did you learn? Get an Italian. Its perfectly made, pay the $7 and eat half, put the other half away, and 30 minutes later go get it in a empty room, so you don't have to share. Eat the other half...YUM Oh yeah, one more thing...don't ask for mayo on it...ewwww

This place is the best! By far the best Hot Italian Sausage I've ever purchased anywhere! Five Star Service too! They will do almost anything to make a happy customer! The last time I went in Joe took care of me... When i left, I realized my motorcycle battery was dead. Joe came right out with his Jump box & got me going! Thanks Joe!!!

If I keep eating from here I don't think I'm gonna have a problem surviving anorexia! I've gotten there Ditka Chops as well as Buffalo Wings and I can't wait till grilling season starts again. The guys who work here are really cool and on Saturdays they cook outside for lunch on there huge outdoor grill. They have these huge sandwiches that they are known for and your not gonna go hungry if you can even finish it. I'm looking forward to trying some of the pastas they have and can't wait to get more Italian sausages for the grill this summer. A must if you live in the area and enjoy cooking!

I have eaten many sandwiches in my life time. Sandwiches are my vice, Josef's serves up some of the best sandwiches not only in the tri-city area but some of the best I've ever eaten. I had their Italian beef the other day (it's a daily special only served one day out of the week) and it might have been the best Italian beef I've ever put in my mouth. There was something unique about it, something I couldn't quite put my finger on but delicious. If you're looking for a sandwich that'll fill you up but still wanting another bite Josef's is your place.

My wife and I stopped by today, finally. I grew up in St. Charles and heard about and tasted their catering meals, but never stopped in. We ordered sandwiches and looked around. I told my wife that if they took a while to make the sandwiches we'd end up buying a bunch of stuff. Sure enough the gentleman behind the counter was constructing our masterpiece's and we ended up adding a side of Italian Pasta Salad and a loaf of bread. The entire store was filled with great stuff. An older Italian lady stopped in and bought some Lemon Cookies and chatted with the guys. Another couple came in and ordered sandwiches and started talking cars with Grandpa Joe, I think. They ended up in the parking lot looking at cars while we loaded up our car with our goodies. They've got all kind of meats, pasta's, and cheeses that all look great and homemade. Anyway, we got into the car and realized our pasta salad was not there. I went back in to get it, and the guy, I didn't get his name, said he didn't charge me for it, but gave me what I ordered, felt bad about forgetting and didn't charge me. It was the essence of customer service. We got home and opened our sandwiches and thought they forgot the top part of the sandwich, but it was so stuffed the roll didn't fold. I used to think Jimmy John's Italian Subs were the best, but now they are totally obsolete. This sub was amazing!! I'll definitely go back time and time again. This is what a local deli should be! I would recommend Josef's to anyone looking for great food, period. If you're looking for something and can't find a good source, check them out.

I live way south of Geneva, but I was up here visiting, as I do on occasion. Stopped by this place, and it was awesome. Huge sandwiches, fresh ingredients. The guys that work here are super nice; remind me of my Italian-American relatives. Still haven't tried their stuff in the meat case, but it looked delicious.

Great sandwiches. Really helpful staff. Try their tortellini salad! Meats are pricey but you get what you pay for. Bone in ribeyes are the best to grill. They also have a great selection of pastas. Lobster and crab ravioli are tasty.

Josephs is a great meat shop and deli. They grill out on the weekends in the summer. Get the steak sandwich. I have tried their italian sausage too. It is great for grilling and they have several kinds. The spicy one is the best.

This place is great. The staff are friendly and very personable. I met Joe (a sone of the original owner) and he was very nice. I picked up some pork chops and sandwich meats. The quality is outstanding! They have an assortment of prepared pasta dishes, some sauces, pastas etc and then the selection of meats and cheeses. I didnt think the prices were too crazy considering some of the other lunch and shopping options around. They have yummy potato and pasta salads as well.
