Carlos’s Mexican Grill

As a Texan, moving to Illinois has forced me to come to terms with the lack of quality Mexican Food I'll find. It's been a struggle so far but we're getting through. With that said, Carlos's in Fox Lake is the best Mexican Food establishment I've found up here thus far. Thanks to another Yelp review, I went for the steak burrito combo. I wish that the burritos had been packed with some more extras as it felt a little thin. But the steak was really good and it came with rice and beans to complete the meal. The staff was really friendly when we picked the food up. They don't have to-go menus or an online menu so I snapped a picture or two to try and help those who are ordering to pick up.
I agree with everyone who gave this place a stellar review. The salsa is as straight up fresh and delicious as everyone says. Chunky and full of flavor. I ordered the ground beef chimichanga, and my sister got the steak tacos -- which she raved about. The rice was nicely flavored with chicken broth and the refried beans were terrific. My chimi was fried perfectly, not the slightest bit greasy. I got the regular size, and it was huge. Had a dab of guac on it. I'll have to get an order of it next time. Unlike some authentic Mexican restaurants in the Round Lake Area, Carlo's food isn't spicy -- perfect for the "American" palate without being bland. They do offer dishes that bring the heat, but I'll leave those for those adventurous folks! Place is cute, clean, good parking. Can't wait to go again and work my way through the menu.
Our experience is different than most it seems. We would never go back. Stopped in about 7PM on a Friday, it was a little busy but there were a few tables open (by the way they have about 6 or 7 tables). We sat and it was down hill from there. I asked for root beer. Out. I asked for mole for the enchilada on my tampiquena. Out. I asked if we could use the bathroom. Broken. I asked where the closest bathroom was. I don't know. HUH?!?!?! So where do YOU go? I didn't ask but I should have just to embarrass her for lying because I suspect I already knew the answer. If it weren't true she would have known where else to go. The "OUT OF SERVICE" sign for the bathroom is just a ruse to keep customers from using their bathroom, and the employees are using it. We walked to Thorntons (gas station), meaning I had to cross Rte 12. to use the bathroom. What a hassle and good thing it wasn't raining or we would have just walked out. Took them about 30 minutes to get our order ready, which was ONE MEAL as my wife wasn't eating. Ridiculous. It wasn't that busy at all. This is supposed to be FAST FOOD Mexican. Skirt steak was small but overall the food wasn't bad. Not the best by any stretch but OK. Chips were lame and they hardly gave you any salsa. Extra star because the food was OK. Otherwise, this was a ONE STAR experience. Open your bathroom for your customers. If I had to eat MX food in Fox Lk again I'd eat at El Puerto way before ever going here. It's more expensive and average food, but at least they have bathrooms and quality service. Plus the view of Nippersink (OK, their docks suck on weekends).

Found this place on yelp to begin with, they said that this place had a good burger.. DAMN is it AMAZING! Tried the Bacon and Bleu Burger is soooo great! Best Burgers hands down I have ever had. Also tried a burger with black and brown onion rings, with bacon, and american cheese.... you have to go here if you are looking for a great burger. Mouth watering. Delicious. Also had the duck strips.... I would say much better than chicken strips, full of flavor. Also had the tacos, 75 cent tacos when we went and they were even really good! OVERALL you want a burger just... go to Route 12 bar & grill.
this place is a great day for a Sunday Funday. The bloody marys are filled with goodies 50 cent wings and $2 domestic drafts I'm in love!it is a small place but the staff was very friendly and helpful.
Not impressed with the food. ... burgers were overcooked.... bacon on the burger was burnt to a crisp. Coleslaw was bland, fresh-cut fries we're a nice attempt but I've had better. ... and the parking lot is a complete mess when it rains even a little. ... would not recommend.

Dockers Resturant

33 W Grand Ave
Fox Lake, 60020
Reviews:
I love the concept of docking your boat and walking on the pier that leads to a restaurant called Dockers. Since I was too drunk to eat anything, I'll rate their bread. It was so soft and fresh. Mmm. The waitress was really nice and my friends' food arrived promptly. Their appetizer buffet was cool, too. You could just go in, load up on the salads, ice cream, scallops, and a bunch of other appetizers, then leave without paying. However, I don't recommend that. I liked the atmosphere. It was very nonchalant and summer-like.
Cute little place, out of the way, sweet location with a great lake view. You can 'dock' your boat there for dinner; I'm told it gets very crowded in the summertime. The salad bar was fresh, as were my sandwich ingredients and excellent crispy french fries. But the menu in general is middle of the road blah boring. The corned beef in my sandwich was very lean but ice cold. That's how you can tell they don't know how to serve it. The olive relish mix in the salad bar contained canned mushrooms; dressing options were French, Italian, 1,000 Island and Ranch with fat-free packets of Italian and Ranch (no bleu cheese). I wanted the salad bar with my sandwich, and the helpful waitress pointed out it was slightly cheaper to get the sandwich 'deluxe' (includes soup and salad) than to order the salad bar separately; very thoughtful of her. Portions were generous, not huge. Prices are just right (My sandwich, fries, salad and iced tea lunch was $10), service was prompt and attentive; we were not rushed. We went back for dinner, and again, the food was edible but very dull. Service the second time was not prompt, even though they were virtually empty. That may have been a fluke, tho. Too bad someone with some culinary imagination isn't running this place. It's VERY old school food, but I've come to expect that in this 'neck of the woods'.
Dockers is THE place for Sunday brunch. They have not only awesome food, but fantastic drinks (much needed to remedy a hangover) and the waitstaff especially Jackie is awesome! She always has been attentitive and on top of getting us anything we want without being overbearing, so much so we request to be seated at her section everytime we go! Keep up the good job Dockers!

Papagus Gyros

Fox Lake, 60020

Saw this place while hungry and working in Fox Lake for the day. So glad I went in. I ordered a chicken souvlaki which was juicy, juicy, juicy. Fresh tasting chicken breast, onions, tomato on a warm pita bread. But the homemade tzatziki sauce stole the show. I'll surely go back next time I'm in the area.
Came here for lunch after having it recommended to me by a local. I was pretty indecisive and the nice, young man at the counter answered all my questions and helped me decide what to order. I got the gyros plate with a side of Greek potatoes, instead of fries. It was a hearty portion and the potatoes were well-seasoned. While I waited for my food the cashier chatted with me about the area, of which I was unfamiliar, and the food came out quickly. I had a lot to take to-go and it reheated well. The interior is nice and clean, very spacious, but they did not have WiFi.
Stopped in yesterday, 8/1/15. My husband had the gyro plate - the meat was pretty dry, and the sauce was meh. The Greek potatoes were good, however. I had a hamburger that was also pretty dry. The bun was good. Even though it's a lovely place, the fact that it was self-serve and the food wasn't particularly good means we won't go back.

McDonald’s

40 S US Hwy 12
Fox Lake, 60020
Reviews:
McDonald's is a large franchise where most of the items on the menu are the same throughout the United States. The only thing that really varies between them is the service. This particular location has a speedy drive thru which is great for those of you who have places to be. Food quality is also always on point, their fries are never soggy or stale. My only complaint is they recently remodeled the entire parking lot and it has an obscure layout. This is the best McDonald's to swing by if you're running late, or you just want to meet up with your friends.
Sometimes they are good, sometimes not so good. The lady behind the counter yesterday was not friendly and got all flustered because we had a big order. Plus she wouldn't let us use 2 different coupons so then we split our order into 2 separate ones...when you make stupid rules -be prepared for people to go around them.
