Checking in again over a year later. While most places in the course of a year can really jump the shark, Ward 8 is still banging it out. Their classic cocktails are still superb. Still in my book the very best Old Fashioned and Manhattan in Chicago. Cody and Andres are such craftsman that all you have to give them is a base spirit and maybe 1 other descriptor and they can customize a cocktail that is sure to please. I recently went in and asked for a cocktail with Orgeat syrup and Bourbon and they concocted this amazing drink that was a cross between a Tiki drink and a mint Julep. Superb. And for the Whiskey buffs they have an exceptionally well curated selection of fine Whiskies. For the bourbons they ETL, Barterhouse, Weller 12, 1792 and a bunch of other very great Bourbons, and they select some of the best International Whiskies like those from Japan. The Nikka line of products including the Taketsuru 12 and the Yoichi 12 are both featured, as well as several other Scotches and ryes. All at an incredibly great price. I'm so looking forward to the summer when their patios open and they get live music going again (hopefully). If you haven't been here its a must visit

I went to Ward Eight after dinner for my cousin's birthday. It's a cocktail lounge, kinda small of a space with a small open kitchen but HUGE flavors in their cocktail drinks. It was a bit crowded on a late Saturday night, but the decor and vibe was a hipster feel. The place is pretty dark so if you're looking at a menu you will have to be like me, turn on that flashlight cell phone please. There's no TV here, however there was some background music. This is truly a lounge place to force you to talk to your peeps. In the middle of the place, there is a long top table for standing only, but you can put your foot on a metal bar across the bottom of it. But no fret, there are enough seating lounge areas on the sides of the room benched tables and compfy lounge chairs. Up front, you can also sit by the full view window. There are also comfy bar stools along the bar as too. They have premium shelf liquor for their mix drinks or on the rocks. You'll be paying about $10 a drink but you won't be disappointed. They do serve beer here but why get that, you got to try their cocktails. They make them strong and really tasty. As I watched the bartender mix our drinks, he looked like more of a mixologist. He was very entertaining measuring drinks, lighting things up, shaking things up. I ordered my go to cocktail Moscow Mule and hubby ordered one of their signature drink called the Doctor. Mine came is a copper mug (SWEET) with beautiful cubed ice. I mean squared ice cubes topped with a bunch of fresh mint! It was so well made I'd get it again for $10 bucks! Hubby's "Doctor" cocktail drink was made out of Jamaican Rum, Swedish Punsch, and fresh lime shaken like crazy until poured into a small glass that formed a beautiful foam on top. It's a pretty strong drink, more of a sipping drink if you chug it you'll really need to see a doctor in the house. Someone bought the birthday boy a special drink called a Scorpion Bowl. It was a designed scorpion bowl that was holding a flamed lime. I'm not kidding a flamed drink to drink! I didn't try it, but it looked like it had fresh citrus in it and my cousin said it was good and strong. I enjoyed hanging out by the bar to watch them make all kinds of drinks and oh yeah to also sit too, lol! I even saw one guy used like a perfume spray that smelled like citrus as a final touch to one of their cocktails...impressive. One kewl thing that happened that night was the owners/managers who heard there were so may birthday celebrants in the place they ended up giving everyone a round of shots and announced everyone to sing happy birthday which was a nice touch. They also serve some appetizers for snacking. My other cousin ordered their baked dates with gorgonzola cheese, bacon crumbs and micro greens on top of strips of prosciutto with a reduction balsamic glaze. It was ok, but I prefer my typical bacon wrapped dates any day. Overall, I'd come back here again if I'm in the area and try their other signature drinks.

Five billion stars! What a gem hidden in a not-so-good part of Evanston. Don't let the shuttered businesses on the block and cop cars roaming up at down the street dissuade you from coming in here. The drinks are top-notch--everything I've had has been fantastic, with my current favorite being the brandy alexander. The food is quite good as well. My only gripe is that Ward Eight is becoming more popular. I liked having it all to myself!

I came to Ward Eight on a whim, after a friend relayed that she had heard good things about it. Obviously it's not a proper dinner spot, but my date and I did order quite a bit of food and treated the experience as if it were. Here's the rundown: Positives - Cocktails are creative, diverse, and tasty. Plus a decent selection of draught beer. - Food is inventive, fashionably presented, and of a high quality. I definitely recommend checking out the specials on the blackboard. - The waitstaff (once you garner their attention) are fairly attentive Negatives - On the Saturday night that we visited, there was a bluesy duo (guitar and harmonica) playing in the front corner. The volume was out of control, and the issue wasn't properly addressed after our raising it to the "waitress" (though I hesitate to use that term for Ward Eight...see below). If I wanted to see a show, I would buy tickets and go to a proper venue. The purpose of music in a bar is to enhance the ambiance, not to altogether dominate all senses. It's ironic that one of the bar's "rules" is no shouting; were we to have followed this directive, it would have been impossible to carry on any sort of conversation. - Another curious convention of Ward Eight is that all orders must be placed at the bar. To the establishment's credit, there are signs on all the tables informing guests of this protocol. Nonetheless, it comes off as pretentious and perhaps lazy to carry on business in this manner, let alone inconvenient. For example, after ordering our first round of drinks and a smattering of small plates to share, I had to leave my date at the table and return to the bar to order more drinks. My advice would be to tip, shall we say, accordingly, to the level of service that this ordering technique entails. Final thoughts: I would probably return for a late-night cocktail if I find myself in the neighborhood again, merely because I found myself enamored with the libations themselves. The blaring band, inconvenient service, and haughty rulebook I could do without.

Loved it - I will come back. Went early on a Saturday night (8:45pm) and got a booth right away, plenty of seating. Tried the French 75 - really well done and Fish Bowl - SO Good! I like light, refreshing drinks, so they worked well. Small plates were nice - enjoyed the bacon wrapped dates (yummy) and Marcona almonds (great snack w drinks). Had the flourless, chocolate cake - was rich and creamy and a nice pecan crust.

Great cocktail bar; good bar snacks, value for money excellent. Perfect concoctions and they will do a special mix for you if you name some attributes ( gin, citrus, dry...)

What's not to love about Ward Eight? As soon as you walk in, you are transported to an amazingly romantic speakeasy setting. The guys behind the bar are such unbelievably cool looking lads and that they can make mean cocktails is just cherry on top (all pun intended!). The food menu is small but has all that you need to accompany your decadent cocktails. My favorite of course is the charcuterie board and my advice to you is to relish every bite, every sip and when the glass is empty --- just order another one! Bonus outdoor seating when it's warm outside!

Since our first time here, we have visited this place a few times. It has become our favorite place for cocktails. We have never been disappointed when ordering a drink. We now ask the bartenders for their recommendation and get what they recommend. My wife and I love this place.

Met a friend for drinks and it's a good thing that we decided to meet at 5:30 because it was packed by 6. First and foremost, it's so cozy and unpretentious...a great place for a first date or meeting a friend. I tried the Hemingway, which was amazing. And we ordered a 'double date' - dates wrapped in bacon and dates baked with blue cheese. So yummy...also, was it just me or were all the bartenders and staff good looking?

Best bar in the area no contest. Cody, Anders, and team are amazing at their craft. Sit at the bar and enjoy them at their best. Food is great too if you need a bite! Dead Meadow is a must have for any whiskey drinker.

Why can't I do half stars? This would be 4.5. But I will round up! Excellent service and amazing and rare mixed drinks. It is extra special to be able to check it in at Peckish Pig next door and then be able to go here for an aperitif. And boy, are they delicious. Can't go wrong here. Not sure what to order? Ask the mix master!

What a great find. I live in the city so its a bit out of the way, but definitely worth making a trip back up. The gin cocktails were amazing. My date doesn't even like gin and attempted to order a vodka drink. The bartender convinced her to at least try a gin drink and if she didn't like it she could get a vodka drink at no charge. Well, she wasn't disappointed. Both of our drinks were outstanding. I'm a huge gin fan so I knew I'd be ok, but it was great to see her really enjoy both of our drinks. Great atmosphere. Great staff. Can't wait to go back.

Love! I finally made it up to this craft cocktail spot just a couple blocks from the Howard Red line stop. It's small but cozy, with a nice amount of seating, about 8 spots at the bar and a long hightop to stand at when it gets crowded. There was no table service, the signs indicate you need to order at the bar but that was totally fine with us. The bartender was so friendly (and cute!) so I didn't mind heading over to chat about cocktails, then they bring them to your table. I went the gin route and tried the Pegu Club and Last Word, both of which were delicious. My friend loved her Hemingway and Side Car. I get the feeling you can't make a poor choice here. We didn't try any of the food but it smelled delicious! Can't wait to come back!

Ward 8 is thee place to enjoy cocktails Cody and Anne, the owners, and previous In Fine Spirits staff, have created a really cool Speakeasy-like lounge on the border of Evanston & Chicago. We so wish they were in the city, alas...we make the trip to Howard Street to enjoy Cody's cocktail creations. Classic cocktails served with pride and love is what you'll get here. They have a small food menu to accompany your cocktails. The ambiance is great and they have live music on Saturday evenings. Such a great place!

Met a friend here to catch up, sat at the bar in the best seats in the house. Hard to describe why we liked it so much, because it's not overbearing. We like things that are different, and the drinks that were unique and super tasty. Cody is a gem - interested in keeping you engaged without trying too hard or being superficial. True master of his trade. Will be back with my husband.

Cocktails are well-made and thoughtful. I think they're on par with a few other more expensive speakeasy-type places in Wicker and Lincoln Park, but without the pretentious service. We went as a group of 5 on a Saturday night when they were fairly full, just for drinks, and never had to wait long for a round. Would highly recommend to a friend. If you like gin sippers, try the Vesper.

Drinks: Ward 8 makes good cocktails, although at the time I went the selection on the menu wasn't all that interesting. Food: The cheese and charcuterie plate was a bit overpriced for the amount of food we received. Service: Service was fine, nothing especially good or bad here. Ambiance: The interior is nice, and the seating arrangements are good for small groups (2-4 people). Overall: Ward 8 has solid drinks, but skip the food.

My new favorite bar in Evanston. It's kind of hard to find this place, since they don't have a sign or # on their door. It's very dimly-lit and quiet inside, creating a warm, romantic ambience. You could come here for a date, or with a group of friends (most of the crowd there this past Saturday night). All the cocktails I tried were amazing. I asked the server for a recommendation if I typically like a whiskey base, and she suggested the Artist's Special (bourbon, sherry, lemon, groseille red currants). It was SO delicious - It had a very sweet and fruity aftertaste, and I'm always a fan of strong drinks that don't taste strong! For my second drink, I asked the bartender to create something similar to the Artist's Special, and I ended up liking that one even more. Meanwhile, my two guy friends each ordered the "Dark & Stormy," which was also delicious! For food, we sampled the Cheese & Charcuterie Plate - though I felt that it was a bit pricey for the amount of food we received, everything was extremely delicious. The meats were fresh & the ginger figs paired so well with the cheeses! Also, I thought they could've given a bit more bread, because we ended up with more cheese & meat leftover after we'd already finished the bread. Overall, although the food was a tad pricey, the delicious cocktails and amazing service more than made up for it. The owner and bartender really treated us like valued guests, conversing with us and asking to take a photo with us at the end of the night! I really loved my overall experience here, and I will be back often, as well as Peckish Pig (same owner as Ward Eight) when it opens!

I've been dying to visit Ward 8 for a while. What could be more perfect than a new, hip, highly-rated lounge close to Howard station?! Not too far from Evanston, but far enough so it was a nice change of environment. Came with a friend, and we each ordered two drinks and shared an artisan cheese platter and a charcuterie platter as well. Drinks: 4.5/5 - Mexican firing squad: tequila, habanero, citrus undertones (and other things I cannot remember). Took a couple sips to initially get used to the flavor, but the spiciness of the drink made it fun and very unique. Enjoyed it very much. - Fish house punch: Jamaican rum based, fruity and summery. Typical girly drink that I enjoy. They powdered it with some spices on top (my friend thought nutmeg?), and there was also some finely crushed ice. Great flavors. Food: 3.5/5 Thought it was a bit overpriced for the amount they give you. Also wished they gave out more bread for both the cheese and charcuterie plates. Ran out for both platters, and when I asked for more bread for the cheese, they said I had bread coming with the charcuterie plate, so didn't get any (they weren't rude about it, but still). I also wish I had some choices for the cheese platter - I'm used to having a list of different cheeses and getting to choose from there. Only saying this because I only really enjoyed 1 of the 3 that they gave me. Charcuterie plate was good but nothing particularly amazing. Overall a great experience. Can be pricey (2 drinks per person = 4 total, plus the two platters = $70 pre tip). But worth the occasional visit for sure. Great drinks and great atmosphere. Will be back (actually am going again in a few days!)

I love this spot...the vibe here is comfortable, they often have new art on the walls to showcase local artists and it is always amazing. The bartenders are courteous and helpful. Great place!

My new favorite bar in Evanston, Ward Eight I have been looking for you! Great ambiance when you walk in. It is a bit odd that there is a police station right next door but word on the street is that they will be selling that for a coffee roaster.. mmm. The drinks are excellent. Very flavorful and with depth. I ordered the Doctor and my companion ordered the Artist's Special. The food is also delicious, we ordered the pickles, dates, and arugula strategy. Overall, this place had food and cocktails on par with Violet hour, at a more reasonable price and time. Ward Eight is a great gem in South Evanston.

Eh, I just don't know. They're super tiny, super overcrowded, and bustling with business. The owners are young awesome folks, and I definitely wish them the best. Food itself was pretty awesome, and the drinks were too. Those deserve a 5 star. Food was also really expensive. However, the seating availability is nonexistent and it's so noisy that you simply cannot hear anyone in any fashion. Literally impossible without screaming, even to someone sitting a foot away from you. Which, considering our plan was to grab drinks and discuss our book club book, was pretty irritating. I actually gave up about halfway through because it was just that hard to hear folks, and I'm not talking about because of my hearing aids. Sorry Ward 8, but you're Ward 1 for me - as in, I'm going here this one time, and probably never again.

Friendly intimate atmosphere, small inventive plates, superb mixologists- Ward Eight is a great find on Howard Street in Evanston. I like Rye and orange peel. The Brooklyn here mixes both into a fabulous drink on the rocks. A superb (but small) selection of Ryes can be enjoyed here, and a few of the Specials for the night were Rye-based. The mixologists here know their stuff, and I can't wait to get back to try more specialty cocktails. I also enjoyed Restless Years by Evanston's own, Temperance Beer Company, and it was a nice balanced, not too hoppy beer. Joining Daphne L. and husband here, we all shared the Brussels Sprouts, Bacon-wrapped dates, and a mashed potato and crostini dish. All were great, and the staff were very nice and helpful. This place is small, and has limited hours, but it won't take you long to get warmed up after a mixed drink or Rye neat, here. Make the short trek to Evanston! The City line is just imaginary.

So next to last time I was here, I got a Side Car. Just as with all their other cocktails, it was perfect. We also decided to eat here too. I had their special sandwich and Hubby had a ham and cheese. They came with (seemed like homemade) chips and (seemed like homemade) pickles. They grill the sandwiches in butter. They come out nice and hot (not too hot), crisp and just the right amount of greasy. mmmmm-mmmm. The last time we came here, I had TWO drinks! I had a Sazerac and a Last Word. The Sazerac was nice and bitter. It was a great sipping drink. The Last Word had Green Chartreuse, Gin, Lemon and something else.... It was very good, as usual. Cody has been training others to make the cocktails, and it shows! Matt can make 'em for me anytime! Have I told you to... Sit at the bar. You will learn a lot about cocktails!

Another hidden gem in my own hood I did not know about! Met up with an old friend here a few weeks ago. The cocktails are amazing! You can tell that they put a lot of thought into them. We each had two. I think each of our bills was around $20. For the quality of the drinks, it was well worth it. A really cool place to hang out or even a "date night." I was very impressed!

  • Jenny T.

I love this place. It's one of my favorite bars in Chicago and I love taking my friends who bother making the trek up to Evanston here. All the drinks I've ever had here are super sophisticated and well balanced. The bar staff are extremely knowledgeable about their craft. One of the made a beautiful Aviation after my mixologist friend requested it, and it wasn't on the menu. Not much can be said for the food because the cocktails outshine the crap out of the food, but I remember the bacon wrapped dates to be a nice supporting act for my Vieux Carre.

  • Chad H.

No food consumed, so this review is based solely on drinks. Fantastic. These guys are true mixers, and not in the way that bartenders call themselves mixologists to sound cool. Each cocktail is well thought out, balanced, and tasty. They definitely play on the classics here, prominently showcasing cocktails from the 20s - 40s. Beer and wine lists are not overly impressive, but are complete enough to satisfy a broad range of people. Will return to try more cocktails and the food! Nice job!

Classic cocktails correctly created by Cody and Company in a real Cocktail Lounge with respect, knowledge and yeah, love. Ward Eight is a dark and brooding little gem imbued with a very cheerful attitude, an almost purposefully hidden treasure marked only by a small, square strange optical illusion deco lion's head trademark in black on white hanging over their door. Entering, one is enveloped by an inviting blend of dim mood lighting and straight ahead acoustic jazz filling one's ears, the good old good ones from the likes of Miles and Coltrane and Monk. Stand at their wonderful bar, or sit and feel that? Yes, there is a foot rest. Peruse the menu. Choose a classic, their excellent Manhattan or a Tom Collins, an Old Fashioned, a Gin Rickey, a very cool house specialty like a Doctor or Hemingway, or just tell Cody, Anders or any of the experts what you have in mind and trust them. Soon the magical liquid dice cup sound of cocktail shakers will fill the air, and then, perfectly prepared libations will fill your tummy and heart with warmth for all humanity while wrapping your mind in muslin. I feel transported here, in all the best romantic illusionary ways, into noir Chandler novels and films of guys in trenchcoats and fedoras and their brassy or classy dames, to Hemingway and Fitzgerald sharing their mutual love for an excellent Daiquiri and clinking glasses, getting google eyed with Zelda. Did you know JFK was also a Daiquiri fan? Yes, yes he was. Daiquiris were once strong drinks and not slushies, and are again at Ward Eight. Ask Cody for a JFK. It's not on the menu. Your Top Secret Password: "Peter sent me." Don't tell anyone else. Incongruously, they're right across the street from Popeye's. Sometimes you'll see Anne and even the little Codyette behind the bar as well. They also have a very good, very limited food menu and absinthes. Many absinthes. With true fondness and appreciation for them and all they bring to the farthest north side of Chicago and the farthest south side of Evanston. We are permanent fans. ~Peter O. and S.

This place is awesome! The atmosphere is quaint and cozy. I came here to have a few cocktails with my best friend and we sat up at the bar. The cocktail menu consists of everything from classics to fun ones. Anders was a great bartender and was fun to talk to. Will be back :) the only reason I gave it a 4 and not a five is cause the food menu didn't have much variety and the pizza we did get was just ok. Although I don't blame them, they are a cocktail bar so I didn't expect the food to be amazing.

Evanston's best kept secret!! Some of the best cocktails I've ever had, on par with all the much hyped about spots in the city like Violet Hour and The Office. I won't re-state what's already been said, but if you find yourself in the north burbs when it's time for a cocktail (or 3, why stop at 2?! #imgreedylikethat) do yourself a favor and check this place out!!

This is a preliminary review. I only had drink and will be returning for the food but for now... Speakeasy Ward Eight is not. A number of peeps, as well as reviewers on Yelp, have claimed this is Evanston's speakeasy, so maybe my expectations were set to high. Also coming from The City, it may be that I'm spoiled. Regardless, I had a simple request that they make something with Ketel, Pimms, cucumber, and lime, since I didn't like anything I saw on their menu. Well they didn't have cucumber, so I asked if they could make anything that had similar notes. The bar keep made me a 575 w/ Grenadine (I'm assuming since it wasn't red like when pomegranate is used). Meh, it was okay but didn't have me ordering a second. We'll see if the food changes my mind.

Absence makes the heart grow fonder. After moving back to Texas, we visited our old RP hood, and made my mandatory Ward Eight stop. I revisited my old review, and realized that after experiencing their craftsmanship again, Austin has nothing to offer me anymore. Is it advisable to schedule a move back to Chicago just to visit Ward Eight daily? When you throw Pedro's food into the mix, the answer is yes.

  • Daphne L.

I admit I'm biased about Ward 8, but still want to give them props and rounds of applause, ESPECIALLY when I read negative, 1-2 star reviews, because the place is "too crowded." Here's a tip: crowded is good. It's crowded because it's popular, because the cocktails, food, and service are outstanding. It should be crowded. My husband and I go all the time, and there have been evenings when there isn't anywhere to sit..oh well, that's life. Criticizing them for being successful is absurd, just as it's absurd to complain that a cocktail bar was too loud (and crowded) for a book club meeting.

  • Eileen Z.

Ward 8 is specialty cocktail mania. Ordered an assortment of stuff to snack on, my favorite by far would have to be a bacon and date special they had, not sure if it's something they do often. It's not the same one that's on the current menu. Fair warning -- space is limited and you'll be pouncing on table/chair opportunities and get vermillion-red angry at peeps who don't wait their turn.

Ward 8 is Evanston's Speakeasy. Rightfully so, considering its location on Howard Street. Times have changed, but I am not about to take a long stroll in the middle of the night, in this neighborhood, by myself. My first visit happened on Valentine's Day. I went here on the suggestion of a friend. I decided to take a guy up on his offer, and go on a date. We were completely out of our element when we first walked in. There were no instructions regarding the service. When you walk in, no one greets you. Menus are located in the back of the bar, just before the hallway to the bathrooms. Grab a menu and just sit anywhere you want. On the menu, there are small food plates offered; along with a list of the various cocktails, described by their ingredients. Do not come here hungry. These plates are more like snacks. They are also over priced. Overall good vibes made up for everything. You might have to wait, but once you have made your selections from the menu, you must place your order at the bar. Ordering wine, bread and cheese took almost 10 minutes. The mixologists appear young and possibly not the best at handling a busy venue. I simply immersed myself in my cellphone while my date did all the work ordering. Overall our stay was uneventful and pleasant. I think if I ever visit Ward Eight again, it will be to serve as a halfway point to gather for my friends that live up north. If you live in Chicago, you definitely owe it to yourself to check it out at least once. It really is more down to earth than other speakeasies found in the Chicago.

Wonderful gem of a place, where the drinks match its cozy ambiance. All of our cocktails were superb, but the Absinthe "Momisette" was otherworldly. The history behind "la fée verte" (the green fairy) makes drinking it all the more interesting. It is an added intrigue to the experience to read about the mysterious spirit while in the company of other's. One could easily devote an entire evening to the topic of their cocktails, it's that fun. Plan to return in a few weeks for my birthday - only this time, we're going to indulge in some eats too!

Yummy drinks, friendly service, chill vibe. Fantastic place! So apparently this place gets crowded. Solve the problem by going late on a Sunday night because why the hell not! From the pictures I expected the place to be much brighter, but it's like 90% just candlelight when we stopped by 10pm on a Sunday night. Driving by I actually thought they were randomly closed for the night. Our first cocktails were so yummy I really wanted another one! I got something (forgot the name) which was perfect for what I asked for a recommendation for - fruity but not too tart. The hemingway was very citrus-y but great for people who liked that! For round two I asked them to surprise me with something I might like, and it was SO FREAKING GOOD I didn't even want to savor and enjoy it. I can't wait to come and try some charcuterie and more creations. Definitely a potential 5 star.

Fabulous cocktails. Fantastic pickles. Friendly bartenders (mixologists?). On Howard Street. Yup. So, there's a Popeyes and a bar named "Tally-Ho" across the street, but Ward Eight lies within the boundaries on Evanston... and it is encouraging to see how busy it is. We stopped in for a quick drink early on Saturday evening, and there were several parties waiting. Some things to know: - The space is small. - The food menu is a bit limited. (I came hoping for an In Fine Spirits replica, but their kitchen is so tiny, that I needed to readjust expectations). - Here's what you do upon arrival: Open door, come in, sit down at a table (menus are already there). Peruse menu, THEN go up to the bar and order your food and drink. Someone will bring these out to you. I saw this obnoxious lady sitting in a corner waving her hands, arms, and menu around, trying to get some attention for 5 minutes. Don't be like her. - The French 75 is divine.

Dear hipsters, please stay away! Ward Eight is neither pretentious nor ironic enough for you (except for the irony that the eponymous drink is not on the menu). J/k, I'm just asking you to stay away, so that I can have a seat when I visit. Old timey drinks are the best and you'll be hard-pressed to find a better mixed drink anywhere else. And importantly, for all those non-whiskey lovers out there (i.e. my better half), there are a ton of delicious colorless-liquor options. There's definitely no shortage of craft cocktail-serving bars in Chicago, but sometimes I want a nice drink without having to venture into the city (especially on these nights when winter just won't go away). Now with Ward Eight, I might never have to go into Chicago to get boozey. P.S. It's highly recommended that you end your night at Ward Eight, you'll be sadly disappointed by whatever you order elsewhere.

Loved it. LOVE. This was my first time back in the 'hood since I moved out of state three years ago. My friends had raved about Ward 8 so I was excited to check it out. I was not disappointed. Drinks are great, food was wonderful (OMG THE DATES), and the service & atmosphere was perfect. Bravo kids, I hope you're around for a long time.

Love It; well dressed drinks, tasty bartenders and a great atmosphere. A hidden gem. A classic with classic cocktails, this place feels like a speakeasy straight out of the roaring 20's.

We have been here three times and still think about it. Their craft cocktails is what sites it for us. They are tasty & delicious. Try the Blood & Sand of its on the menu. My favorite. The atmosphere is perfect, small and intimate. Enjoy!

Have I really not reviewed Ward Eight yet? I've been here three times, maybe four, and have loved it each time. The cocktail menu is perfect - a good selection of tried and true cocktails, each annotated with the year it was created (1800s, anyone?). The food menu is small, but quality. You can get a bowl of almonds or a larger meal - something for everyone. They have local artists' work on the walls, atmospheric lighting, really friendly servers, and good music. It's small, it's not a pick-up joint, it's not a scene - it's a great little place to go hang out with friends or a date/spouse and relax with good food and drink.

Elegance, like anything, is always comparative, I would say Ward 8 is for its time and place. I believe the sophistication rests more on the execution of its cocktails and service. The atmosphere for a speakeasy vintage lounge is a touch plebeian. Candidly speaking, a bit dull. It lacks style, but also lacks pretentiousness, and whatever does not pretend style at all has style enough. Not everything has to be done in shouts instead of whispers. The drinks are well prepared. I enjoyed the Sunshine Fizz, Eggnog, and ate the cheeses and bread. Simple and delicious. The drink menu and food menu so exacting and charming it provides proof of a return visit. Against the homespun background of decor and location; the offerings and staff were as conspicuous as a brass band at a library and I enjoyed it.

My absolute favorite cocktail bar. Ever. Period. It's all about the details here. Real ice shards. Chilled glasses tailored for each drink. A perfectly edited food menu. Mint that is clapped to reveal its aroma. Orange rind gently kissed to the rim of your drink. Bartenders so perceptive, they can cater to your palette and the kind of witty banter you've been waiting for all day. Extra points for the hilarious and delicious "Ham on Rye." The small plates are delectable, too. The owners are lovely, down to earth folks who really know their business. They are being written up all over town right now, so get in while the place is hot! Closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

The drinks here are unlike anything you have ever had. It can only be the work of true mixologists!! No matter what drink you order, you are sure to love it! As an added bonus, they have some of the best food I have ever had! I have always left Ward Eight incredibly impressed and excited to go back!

Popped in for a few cocktails on NYE based on all the good reviews I've read over the past month. Bit of an odd location on Howard, but don't let that deter you from checking it out. Decent crowd on NYE considering most RP/Evanston peeps probably don't know it's even there. Cocktail menu is well thought. They also had a special menu for NYE. We hung out long enough to try a couple cocktails. They also have a few beers on draft and a selection of absinthe. There is also a light food menu. Very impressed with this lounge. Bartenders are some of the best around. They put a lot of attention to detail when crafting the cocktails. I just hope enough folks will venture to Howard to keep Ward Eight around a long time! They deserve it!

Really great little spot, very unique drink specials. The four of us each ordered different drinks and no one was disappointed!! It was nice to see the bartender craft each drink individually with care and I love the details on the drink menu (the origins and years the drinks were originally popular/created.) Great little seating areas, a nice combo of booths, tables/chairs, bar seating and the corner collection of a love seat and arm chairs - perfect atmosphere for a great conversation without having to yell at each other. The stuffed dates are quite nice too! We'll definitely be back!

I rarely, if ever, rely upon server or bartender recommendations regarding their establishment's offerings. It's not about trusting their palettes. It's about knowing mine. It's about them knowing their food, their drinks, the nuances, the a-ha moments. Being knowledgeable enough about the craft to strike out and just create. For two evenings, I have trusted my WE bartenders to guide my drinking experience. The first evening involved an incredibly pungent yet accessible selection of cheeses...and my frittering through cocktails and finding few which could stand up to the levels of smoke present in the cheese charcuterie. Granted, part of the issue was that I could not eat bread, which would have considerably cut the sharp aspects of the cheeses. More on their substitutions later. But upon hearing my request for a drink which could balance my gluten-free cheese plate? An off-the-menu drink was mentioned. I was already sold on the description of flavor interactions, as the provided summary proved that this place was not kidding. They understand the symphony that food can create with libations, assuming a proficient conductor. The Creole Cocktail was lightly sweet enough to balance the earthiness of the cheese, but darkly acrid enough to be worthy of this particular cheese offering. I've had this cocktail before at other places. This one was mixed for my meal. Tonight, I was in a festive mood and ordered the eggnog. Given that the raw egg (many kudos for a traditional preparation) likely wouldn't mix well with most drinks, I asked the bartender which drink likely would. There was a mention of a cocktail with egg whites and homemade hibiscus powder. Let me restate this. He took hibiscus petals and created a powder. Of his own volition. At a place in the North-ish Shore. I digress. So my drink was a variation of a Pisco Sour, but spicier. I didn't realize the extent until I saw a small dish. With a cinnamon stick. Set aflame. With a chilled glass placed over the dish. "That drink better be mine." With glass slightly smoked with spice, and egg white froth slightly graced with crimson dust (I'm looking forward to coming here in daylight, as their food should be appreciated in both sun and moon)--this drink was a perfect partner to my eggnog, pureed squash soup and brussels. Their substitutions. They swapped bread for apple slices, where reasonable. This worked very well for the meat/cheese charcuteries. Many additional kudos for their searching for GF options, yet not settling upon inferior products. I came here this evening after a hectic day, and just wanted something familiar yet properly-executed before I went home. I was content to settle upon a whey protein shake and glass of Petite Sirah in my kitchen. This place is raising the standard for local restaurants.

I just got back from Ward Eight for a friend's birthday. I had heard good things about this place but it was honestly better than what I expected. We got inside and seated ourselves at a booth. I wanted to get so many things on the menu--lucky for me, I was with 4 other girls. All of the drinks were fantastic and delicious (: The best part about it though was the LIVE MUSIC. This actually made the atmosphere. You could tell that everyone who was in the bar were regulars or (family, maybe?) and towards the end of the stay, they played many rounds and renditions of Row, Row, Row Your Boat only with different people in the bar singing their own verses. One of the bartenders was playing the drums and sang along. They included us in the rounds as well and wished my friend a happy birthday. It was such a great way to welcome her to the 21 club and celebrate her! (: I give it a 4.5 and am so excited to go back and try the other drinks!

Fellow residents of Rogers Park (and Evanston) - you've just become very lucky. I had the pleasure to try out this new cocktail bar and I'm so excited that Ward Eight has arrived in the neighborhood. Truly the only thing I've been missing since moving far north to Rogers Park has been great cocktails within a reasonable distance, and I won't have to miss out anymore. Those who prefer their drinks strong and balanced and are used to the quality of Violet Hour, In Fine Spirits and the like will not be disappointed. Drink prices range from $8-10 - a pretty significant value considering that the above mentioned places charge around $10-13/drink. Some highlights from the menu: DRINKS: - Spanish Fly (bubbly and tropical... so good I had to order it twice) - Elk's Own (a classic made with rye - this was by far the tastiest version I've had yet, with hand grated fresh nutmeg on top) - Last Word (another classic... wonderfully herbal, sour and refreshing) - A Sunshine Fix (gingery with lots of fresh blueberry flavor) FOOD: - Olives (nice variety and quantity of olives marinated in all kinds of citrusy, zesty goodness) - Fig and farmers cheese sandwich (this was so delicious, vaguely dessert-like due to the fig but definitely savory... comes with chips and pickles) You know how sometimes, businesses open hastily, and although you give them a chance, there's a palpable feeling either in the service or the product that they're phoning it in and just trying to fill a niche without doing their homework? Yeah, this is not one of those places. The drinks, food, staff, and lovely interior of Ward Eight make it obvious that every detail has been considered and that cocktail lovers are in excellent hands. I'm sure I'll have more to add as I foresee many hours and dollars spent here!

So happy I stopped by! This bar has a really cool neighborhood, loungey vibe. The bartenders and staff are fun and friendly, and gave my friend and myself great drink recommendations. The cocktails are delicious, and the staff have unbelievable knowledge about spirits and drinks. The ambience was relaxed, dimly lit, and intimate. They are very detail oriented, which really upped the service level. This would be a great date place. The bar also features local art and music, which I think is awesome. I'm really glad the area has a new hangout spot! Looking forward to returning many times.

Really cool place, with a smart staff and great cocktails. They take pride in their work and enjoy making specialty drinks. The bar is perfect size and has great decor. Normally you have to go to more popular parts of town to find places like this, its nice to have something in the far north that has this kind of vibe and quality.

Great place to go. Bartenders were attentive but not annoying. Atmosphere was relaxed. No televisions or excess noise, just good music. Beers were $5-6 at most and had good selection. Just 4 beers on tap, but most were microbrews, one was from Evanston. Selzter was free! Toasted almonds were delicious $4 bar snack. Was quieter for a Thursday night bar, so great place to meet friends and actually hear them talk. I'd come again for sure. BTW: free parking on the North side of Howard Street after 6 pm. Boo ya!

I have very negative feelings about this place being subsidized by the city as a way to bring commerce to Howard Street. To me this inevitably turns into gentrification, which I see the effects of down the street as I volunteer for A Just Harvest and the Genesis Project. So many people come to the community kitchen because their rent has suddenly soared so high that they can't afford to put food on their table anymore, and may be on the brink of homelessness. If my friends at Northside Power even knew I stepped foot in here, I think I might be excommunicated from any kind of social action social gathering. HOWEVER--purely, objectively on a food and drink basis, I still take issue with Ward Eight. I ordered one of their Ward Eight signature sandwiches, which was kind of dry chicken and coleslaw IN the sandwich. This offends me to the core of my sandwich-loving sensibilities. At least give the person the option of having a salad on the side, as opposed to immersed within, their sandwich. So, they effectively scared me away from their food menu. I'll report back if I have something better. I also ordered a bourbon drink that had a softball-sized (hand-carved?) ball of ice in it. The ice didn't melt right away, but it took up so much volume in the glass that I missed out on the actual BOURBON!(I've been to Kentucky, and they accuse you of being a lightweight if you have ice in your bourbon whatsoever, I would have loved to get my Louisville friends' take on this). There was also a GLACIER of ice in this absinthe drink I got there, but the drink was so good that it was okay. And absinthe still tastes great when it's watered down. I would recommend that for sure. The ambience is sexy as hell, however, so I would definitely go on a date here. The lighting is quite nice--it almost even offsets the art on the wall, which is straight out of that "terrible art for coffee shops" company sketch on Portlandia. Maybe if this place gives back to the community, or makes an irresistible sandwich, I will give them another chance.

This place wasn't too bad. It almost reminisced a bar you would find in Logan Square. Service was great, atmosphere was lovely but I think they still have a few kinks to work out in terms of how well their drinks are mixed.

one of the best whiskey bars in Chicago. and THE best cocktail bar in town, by far! great small plates, super-friendly service and affordable prices make this my favorite neighborhood bar. if mixology is your thing, you're in the right place (without the pretense & douche-heavy crowds of other local hot spots). you can't go wrong with an Old Grandad Manhattan!!

I went to Ward Eight for the first time this past weekend...what a gem! Great cocktails and intimate. Great for a drink with a friend and romantic enough for a date. My boyfriend and I really enjoyed ourselves. Oh, they also have an impressive beer collection which my BF really enjoyed. The music is interesting music, not dance-able but eclectic. Highly recommend!

Almost drove right by this place ... it's on a quiet stretch of Howard Avenue near the El Station. Should have remembered one reviewer who said that it's across the street from Popeyes. Anyhow, this is a nice little bar that really takes it's cocktails seriously - there's a menu that lists about 20 classic cocktails and their descriptions include ingredients, taste profile, as well as history. I had a Corpse Reviver #2 and a Sazerac. Both were delicious. Oh, there's a bit of food also - we had the ham sandwich (my friend said the "best ever"), a simple deconstructed beet salad, and the special of the day, a crock of earthy pinto beans served with two kinds of spicy andouille sausage (lamb and chicken) and a fried egg. It's all very unpretentious and casual. If I lived in Evanston I would come here all the time.

A speakeasy located in the town of evanston?? Could it be?! A block away from bf's house? Somebody pinch me! What's not to love about a speakeasy lounge? Inconspicious.. No sign per se. Just a black tinted door that says BEER:FOOD Intimate and non-pretentious.. Better for small parties.. 2 booths, 2 couch/lounging areas, & about 3 small tables Nom-Nomeries: -Savory pork sandwich on a panini with kettle chips & sweet pickle on the side -Meat & Cheese platter: great array of different meats and cheese & stone ground mustard -Honey Fizz cocktail : a little toooo sweet for my taste, but it was good. Next time, will go for my usual Moscow Mule. Server and bartenders were sweet and attentive. Chip Chip Cheeeerio!

So happy this place moved into S Evanston / Rogers Park! It's in an unlikely spot for a craft cocktail bar, but I'm glad it's there. I've been here 3 times so far, and I've had a great experience each time. The mixologists are very friendly and make DELICIOUS drinks. If you're not sure waht to order, just ask them for a recommendation. I've had at least 6 things off of the menu and loved every one. The food is good too, but the sandwiches are a little overpriced. The drinks, however, are at a lower price point than any other craft cocktail bar in Chicago, so I guess that makes up for it. Most of the cocktails are $10 and there are some cheaper, some more expensive. Only once did I have to wait 10 minutes to get in on Saturday night... last night (saturday) I didn't wait, and on a Wednesday I didn't, either. So happy to support this place!!

I really hope this place will last. It's located on a stretch of Howard Street where there is a push for new businesses. I really like the decor and atmosphere. The drinks, well, they are great! My party had drinks and beer. Everyone really enjoyed what they ordered and there were absolutely no complaints. The staff was friendly and attentive. We didn't have any food, but I plan on ordering something to eat the next time I go. I will be back, Ward Eight. I WILL be back!

I remember when I read that Ward Eight was opening in this specific area of Howard St. and the first thing I thought was .... really? Yes really, and I have a feeling it will thrive for many reasons. One, this place is such a fresh breath of air in the hot mess that is otherwise known as Howard St. Second, the thought and care that goes into the things you will eat and drink here is amazing. We got here aronund 5:30pm last night (Friday) and grabbed some seats at the bar. Highly recommend sitting at the bar if you can. There are a few tables and booths (this place is VERY small and cozy) as well. We sat right by Cody and in the two + hours we were there, the man never stopped making drinks. You could tell he was very methodical in his work and it reflected greatly among the drinks that we had. The cocktail list is great - I really like that it not only lists what's in the drinks, but also the tastes you will have as well as the year drink was first thought to be brought into cocktail world. My favorite drink of the night was the Aviator. Food: also a highlight. Lots of small places and full of the deliciousness. There are vegetarian options (thanks for answering my tweet regarding that!) and lots of meaty goodness for those who enjoy that. We had the meat and cheese plates, all the sandwiches (I die over the fig and farmer's cheese sandwich) and maybe one of the best chocolate tortes I've ever had. This place filled up quickly and given that there were is only a very small staff, don't plan on making this a quick in and out visit. But you'll want to be leisurely here - especially if you can snag a seat at the bar and watch Cody work his magic. Way excited for this place and hope it is greatly successful. Howard St will benefit greatly.

We used to live in Bucktown and really liked the Violet Hour. This is a nice addition to Evanston and the drinks are great with less "seriousness/pretentiousness." (not bashing Violet Hour...we love it). We're just happy that Ward Eight is in Evanston and really enjoyed our drinks. I got the Doctor and my wife got the Hemmingway. Also very nice bartender.

Frank Sinatra, anyone? That's who you expect to walk into Ward 8. It has a 1950's feel - in an excellent way. Classic drinks, on the dark side, quiet but there's conversation and interesting people. Fascinating artwork .

This quaint little cocktail bar across the street from a Popeye's and wedged between offices is a small diamond in the Howard St. rough. Your eyes will flit over the dull, unimpressive decor and you will make note of the lack of pretentiousness. Then you sit down at the bar and immediately change your mind. The selection of liquor and liqueurs behind the bar reflect the limited space - but the choices are deliberate and well thought out. I was curious to see what people were ordering, and although I watched drink after drink go out, I was still befuddled. Aside from standard Palomas, Moscow Mules, Manhattans and Old Fashioned cocktails - most of the items slung from the other side of the bar didn't appear to be on the menu. Out of impatience of watching cocktails roll out without having one, I ordered a Dead Meadow to start. I smiled as I watched it stirred and not shaken. One large rock with apple whiskey, rye, walnut liqueur and an orange twist. It can only be described as a delicious punch to the face. The staff was friendly, and eager to hear if I approved of the cocktail. I certainly did. I asked about the tiki mugs - excited at the idea of swizzle stick tiki drinks. Nothing on the menu yet - but hopefully there will be soon. I asked for a cocktail with Applejack next, and I think the bartender kept my tiki drink in mind as I received a tall, tropical drink over crushed ice. Does this place have three different kinds of ice? Where do they keep it?!? At this point, you may be wondering why there are only four stars to my review. The limited business hours (especially on weekends), make this a difficult place to get to from the city. Their small plate menu doesn't feature much in the way of good "drinking food" - which means dinner would have to happen elsewhere. For the lucky Evanstonians nearby, this is a great find; Hard treck for city dwellers.

Very promising! Those were the first words off my lips as my wife and I left Ward Eight tonight. I love a bar where I can say 'Bourbon cocktail, more bitter, less sweet, citrus is good...surprise me' and end up with a thoughtfully-crafted product that exceeds my expectations. Ward Eight is doing things right...right away...and we're already becoming fast friends. Our group arrived after dinner at Found with stuffed bellies and we perused the brief yet tantalizing food menu anyway. I can't wait to get back to try some of their food offerings. Service was top-notch and the vibe was near-perfect with Prohibition-era fixtures to match the cocktail list. If they add a thoughtfully-placed nighttime blind to shade the nearby streetlight the atmosphere will be complete in my eyes. In any case, I'll be back...and quite soon.

I'm so glad to have such a great addition to the neighborhood. It's a fun, lively place where you can have a quality time with friends. We were a group of 6 on a Friday night and had no issues with getting a table, drinks and food - we saw the note in the menu to order food & drinks at the bar only close to the end of our night there but one of the bartender helped out with everything we needed. So thank you again, sir! ;)

  • Jen H.

The day I realized that a bar opened so close to my home, I walked in starry eyed and couldn't believe such a simple cute place had opened so close to me. But there it was! I was on my way to a party, but I was determined to get back there as soon as possible. Since then, I've come back at least once a week. The owners, Cody and Anne, are delightful. I am one of those people that will regularly attend a bar just because I like the bartenders, and Cody and Anne provide both excellent services and conversation. And remember, you're only as good as the company you keep ... and all the people who frequent this bar are also delightful, which makes it easy for me to drop by during the week when I need to get out of the house for a bit. I love this place because I can go in wearing my hipster black sweatshirt and skinny jeans ... or my work skirt and cardigan. I can head there wearing whatever is comfortable. It's not at all pretentious, which is hard to do considering the place uses mostly local or small batch liquor in their craft cocktails. The bartenders are helpful with drink choices, so you don't have to feel bad if you don't know what angostura or the like is. So the service and the ambiance are right up my alley, but what about the actual products? Second to none. Unique delicious cocktails that never disappoint. I'm getting close to tasting most of the menu, and I've yet to find a drink that I wouldn't order again. The small plates are also the perfect accompaniment if you get to your third round and find you've got the munchies. In a short period of time, I've come to enjoy going to this place alone or showing it off to my friends from out of town. Check this place out, it's a real gem.

Ward Eight is an awesome gem on the northside. Great for classic cocktails made to perfection! I love how the menu cites when the cocktail originated! The small plates were delicious and went with our drinks perfectly. We had the cheese-stuffed dates, the carmelized brussel sprouts and the charcuterie and each bite was fantastic. The whole staffwas nice and attentive and Anders (our bartender) was so helpful in making our choices and always full of smiles. We will definitely be back! Thanks Anders!

Drinks and music are fab on a Thursday night. It's laid back, cozy, and unpretentious with great cocktails: a mix of classic cocktails and drinks of their own making. Plus they told us there'll be outdoor seating next year! Hurray!

What a great addition to the area. We stopped in last night for the first time. They were busy but it didn't feel crowded nor was it too loud. Lighting and decor make for a nice comfortable setting. Cocktails are excellent. I had the Maria Pickford, Dead Meadow and a Dark & Stormy. I'm not a huge whiskey fan but the Dead Meadow was my favorite, with really nicely balanced flavors. The beer list is good, however, on our first visit, they only had 2 taps running. My friend really enjoyed the Green Bush Porter. Food offerings are limited but very satisfying. I had the charcuterie platter and tasted my friends triffetta? Both were really nice. I am looking forward to visiting regularly

Wonderful! I was over the moon to learn the existence of a modern gastropub nearby. Ward Eight offers delicious small plates (recommend the artisan combination cheese plate), classic mixed cocktails and a exquisite chocolate torte in a beautiful small atmosphere without the pretension of similar places in the city. The bartenders were surprisingly sweet and friendly and the customers where equally the same. So refreshing to experience fine drinks and small plates without the attitude and long lines! I'll definitely be back to try more cocktails hopefully served by that one cute bartender :)

SO fantastic!! I'd been nervous about trying it out as I got the sense that it was more for peopel who really know their drinks (and I'm not!) but I've been a few times now and the bartenders are always super friendly, knowlegable and approachable and the drinks and food are fabulous! Not sure what else to say. Just great!

Ok - talk about a turn-around! I was contacted by the manager of Ward 8 whose customer service skills are exceptional. Cody invited me to return, offered to meet with me and suggested nights that were less crowded since that was a turn-off for me. I went back last week and what a completely different experience! The place had seats available and we did not have to wait at all. The noise was conversationally friendly. The wine list had also been updated and I really enjoyed my choice. I suggest caution if noise is a problem for you - Cody suggested Wednesday or Sunday nights are quieter. But I think it is a good addition to the neighborhood.

Re: Adriane P. This is a review of your review, since Yelp won't allow me to say that your post was anything other than "good", "funny", or "helpful"-- I would have chosen "ridiculous". Your attempt at sounding cultured and intelligent falls far short of its goal. Your syntax and grammar are atrocious. Your culinary knowledge is clearly limited, but this fact does nothing to deter you from posting as though you were a judge on Iron Chef. You've offered nothing in the way of a real review of this new establishment, and have instead chosen to stumble unwittingly over each of your ill-thought out analogies just so that your voice could stand out as an important one. Thankfully, we are not fooled. Hopefully, your review was a joke; you get kicks from writing faux-pompous reviews on Yelp, right? If not, I encourage you to spend more time on your sentence structure and less time sniffing your farts out of a cognac glass. i.imgur.com/ODEdKTk.gif

What a FANTASTIC new cocktail bar! Best I've been to in Chicagoland short of In Fine Spirits. The staff are fantastic, highly educated in the art and history of the cocktail. Their ingredient selection is amazing, and each cocktail creation gets the full attention of the mixologists / owners. This is not a place where you chug anything - even the beers are high end. The food's great too - cheeses and breads and simple, elegant fare. The clientele are great too - super friendly and outgoing. Rumor has it that the local alderman (Evanston Ward 8) is already a regular, and their official grand opening isn't even until Wednesday the 12th of December. I'll be going here regularly.

Awesome bartenders!! The Ward Eight on the border of Evanston & Rogers Park offers craft cocktails at an average of $10 :) The drinks are great and if you need help deciding ask the bartenders, they made great recommendations and are super nice. Enjoy sitting at the bar and watching these bartenders create amazing well balanced drinks.

Thank you Cody for continuing to provide the far north side with classic cocktails done right. Thank you for opening a space with your partners that is comfortable, modern and vintage, cozy but classy. When In Fine Spirits closed in Andersonville, I was wrecked. When I was prepared to spend some cash to get quality cocktails and not just a drink, I went there. When it closed, there was a void. I love craft beer and wine, but sometimes you just want a Sidecar or an Old Fashioned made right and you don't want to go downtown to drink it. Thank goodness for Ward Eight. Classic list of cocktails with their circa date provided. Several quality craft beers on tap and a short but solid wine list. A short menu of simple appetizer like foods. A hip soundtrack playing and great service and conversation. I'm going to be very, very happy here.

I know what you're thinking: a cocktail place on Howard? It does exist! Finally, you don't have to travel to the West Side to get an exciting cocktail. The ambiance is really great; an intimate setting with a good vibe. If you haven't gone, you must go. Now!

We really enjoyed Ward Eight. I am a little biased since I live in the neighborhood and have been waiting for an establishment like this for about 12 years. The atmosphere is lively, warm and, contemporary without being obnoxiously trendy or hipster. Age range of patrons were 30 and up. The food was good for sure, not 5 star yet, but well on their way. We enjoyed the roasted cauliflower and brussel sprouts, the goat cheese and marinara, and potato, cheese, bacon dip. I had a nice glass of Pinot Gris and my husband had a delicious stout. They have a small wine and beer menu, but nice offerings. They have a full bar with many delicious sounding drinks. I look forward to our next trip and trying more of what they have to offer.

The BEST Moscow Mule EVER!! Really enjoyed this place. The owners, Ann and Cody were so charming and were very hands on. The food was so good. It's a little pricey, but worth it. Check it out!!

Very cool establishment with a quality cocktail menu and great small list of wine and beer. I truly appreciate a place where the owners and the staff take a lot of pride in their craft. They have sourced a number of small batch distillers, brewers, and wineries to create their well thought out menu. Anne and Cody have done a great job creating a comfortable venue to get a high quality drink and a tasty small plate on the North side. I will come back for sure!

Pretty cool, dark and stormy bar. Sunday evening was uncrowded, went for drinks and quiet chat on business. Great place for privacy. Drinks, very good - had an Old Fashion, which I rarely drink but enjoyed this one very much. Switched to a porter beer from Wisconsin - nice, smooth taste. The drink selection was broad based and some pretty nice single malt Scotches on the shelves. So I'd go back even when not doing business. ESJT, Pennsylvania.

Delicious drinks (I had Old Fashioned friend had Moscow Mule). It may have been the best Old Fashioned I have ever had. Just the scent was intoxicating. ONE solid ice cube, to slow dilution. Lovely service. Wonderful olives, Ward Eight sandwich (BBQ Chicken with remoulade and pickled jalapeno), and homemade pickles! Cozy atmosphere. GREAT music in in the background. I cannot wait to return and try one of the Egg Nog's I saw another table enjoying! Truly a value for the quality and beauty you get. Run, don't walk. it was a wow from entrance to exit.

I'm very excited about our new cocktail bar WARD 8! Had to Share: went on Thursday night after work for the first time. Cody and Ann, the young owners, were fun, the drinks were interesting yet beautifully crafted. The food although limited in selection was of very high quality and excellently prepared. They know what they are doing and are excuting really well. [In my opinion the drinks are way better here than at FOUND our other new Evanston bar] Not a faimly place, but if you are up for an adult night out this rocks! If you've never had a wonderful cocktail before, or not since college when surely it was sweet or tasted like cheap booze -- this is the place to have your first or try them again. It has a sophicated vibe but they are striving to be your favorite neighborhood spot to go for an evening out. It took a bit of driving around to spot Ward 8 since they don't have a sign yet, but they are right next to the police station outpost. And you only have to feed the meters until 6. Closed on Monday's and Tuesdays.

what a great place! knowledgable staff, the owners are great and the cocktails are good and at a fair price (unlike other martini bars in Rogers Park--that are expensive and offer you the same old martini i could get around the block from them, at Act One cheaper). your prowess of mixology is to be envied and enjoyed ward eight. thank you
