Kendall's is a "Hidden Gem". Kendall's is really "Old School" as it gets with every aspect possible including the tile walls. "I really, really did not want to review Kendall's because I wanted to keep it to myself without any body ever knowing about this place ever again...ever"! Lastly, I really, really wanted to like this place...did I say really enough? I think that about covers it in regards to "overused lame terminology" described all too often in Yelp Reviews. Kendall's is not hidden nor a gem...it's a diner. It's been on Walnut street forever and the doors open and close just like any authentic Diner on Main Street USA! All are welcome and the more the merrier! "I really, really like this place". This is a true diner experience offering a very tasty breakfast for reasonable prices. The Mexican eggs are killer while the home-made authentic hot sauce resembles a torch. What ever you do, don't show up on a Sunday Morning and take my seat at the counter of this hidden old school gem that I didn't want to tell you about.

Nevermind that the initials are KKK, they mean no harm. I used to live right around the corner from the Kitchen and looked forward to weekends so I could pay it a visit. Elgin is not short on mom-and-pop diners, and Kendall's is a perfect example. Outdated decor, plastic cups, runny eggs and the best mother truckin' biscuits you have ever had. Ever. They're soft and velvety, they take the butter like champs. The gravy is definitely made in-house and when pressed for her recipe, Kendall just smiles and says, "I'm glad you like it, sweetheart" and walks away. She's only open for breakfast, and the crowd is regulars with the occasional visitor and she didn't seem to lose any of them when they had to go non-smoking. She even named some of the breakfast items after the usuals, how sweet is that?

A greasy gem on the fox! This place is old school cool and the food is amazing! Fancy is not a word to describe this place but BIG plates of home cooked goodness abound. If you like breakfast basics you'll love Kendall's!!!!!

A lovely diner towards the south side of town with great community feeling. American breakfast favorites, biscuits and gravy, open very early for breakfast and lunch only. Interior is an old time ice cream parlor, very nostalgic. Street parking, which can be a bit limited. Cash only!

As a newer resident of Elgin, I've come to enjoy Kendal's as a beat neighborhood place to eat. I loved the comment of the initials being KKK. I have to say, I was disappointed about the old timey aunt gemima minstrel picture on the the wall. But the owner seems to be quite sweet. The food is typical diner fare...nothing special, but great atmosphere!

This place is a classic, American diner. Everything is covered in grease and butter and calories but it's definitely worth it. The food is amazing and everything is homemade. They make the world's best biscuits and gravy and Judy's soups are also amazing. Be sure to also check out Mexican Day every Thursday.

Old timey diner, affable chatty waitresses (including the owner), great food, great value. So unassuming from the outside (left) you'd be likely to pass by if you weren't looking for it, or one of the locals that has made a daily habit of stopping in for the last couple decades. I know I would if I lived around there. Perused the menu, ordered the "Country Fried Steak" to which the response was "I'm sorry, we're out, you should try the chicken fried chicken, it's really good." But of course, I HEARD her say "chicken fried steak" cause that's what I was thinking about, but was too confused at that point to ask "what's the difference between Country Fried Steak and Chicken Fried Steak?" If I would have asked, I would have understood at Kendalls, the latter is chicken. Some think eating chicken with eggs is kind of weird. Cycle of life kind of thing. My neighbor down the street, Al, who raises chickens in his back yard, gets so many eggs he ends up feeding lots of them back to the chickens. Ok, that is weird. Cannibal chickens. The 'steak' was ample,a nicely crisped crust, and a handsome piece of breast meat inside. Big bonus, it's served with sausage gravy, a smooth and creamy concoction with nice chunks of breakfast sausage. Add a couple eggs, hashbrowns, and toast, and you're gonna get outta there for less than seven bucks. It's a very long breakfast and lunch menu, and on a Saturday morning, there were empty tables. If you're tired of waiting for a table for an hour at some place on Randall Road on the weekend, head down to Elgin. You'll be happy and richer at the end of your meal. CASH ONLY. ATM in the bar across the street.

The floor was dirty, we sat at a table for 5 minutes and no one greeted us or came to give us menus so we walked out. There is no need to ever return.

Great breakfast spot! I am from Atlanta and was in Elgin visiting in-laws and they took us to this place. Great friendly service and great atmosphere. The food was perfect greasy spoon breakfast! I loved everything about this place and highly recommend it to all!

The biscuits and gravy are OK, but they are not like what you would get in the south.

JUDY WE LOVE YOU! You make this Old School place feel real small town, and I will keep coming back. I feel like I am stepping back into the 50s or 60s. Food is good and fairly priced. Service is good

No finer diner in Elgin. This Elgin landmark continues to stand the test of time. You have to get up early or eat dinner early because they're only open from about 5am to 3pm. Good homemade dishes. I strongly suggest Mexican Eggs with corn tortilla's.
