What an awesome late night stop. Had an incredibly long day of travel and other not so pleasant events and saw this down the street from the hotel. Nothing like a great burger and fries at 1am. Never had Steak N' Shake before, but this place made me a believer. Burgers are very tasty and come in a ton of different ways. That seasoning for the fries is crazy addicting and thankful bottomless. Milk shakes are as good as they get. Service is good, even in the middle of the night. Most importantly, the prices cannot be beat. Will probably never be back to Effingham as long as I live, but I will be back to a Steak N' Shake!

Great late hours, cheap prices, and yummy oreo shake that is huge! Our waitress was amazing.

We were driving cross country from LA to B'port and halfway we passed by numerous 'Steak 'n Shake' locations. My desire to make this trip as quick as possible, and avoid any sightsee urges, made me withstand the temptation to stop to try this franchise before I would leave the last one behind me in the Midwest. However eventually I became hungry, tired, and frustrated that the trip would take another 16hours, so I gave in and decided to try it out. The restaurant has a nice interior, the service is friendly and quick. The burger was, despite of the good taste, a little bit to greasy for me, and they might consider serving more fries with the order. A decent 24hr place, were the interior looks better than the food tasts.

Steak and Shake is one of those quintessential Midwestern places that you have to go to, and so on my trip to Effingham it was our first stop. The best thing about this place was their service: speedy, cheerful, efficient. The worst thing about this was the shakes. Total letdown. If you have shake in your name, your shakes should be tasty. They tasted like watered down soft serve icecream. And not even the good soft serve ice cream, the kinda crap kind, with the texture that's just a little bit off. The food was decent. I had no complaints of my chicken strips and fries. Mom said her burger would have been better if they had let the fat drain off the patty for a minute before putting it on the bun and making a fatty (but tasty!) soggy mess. Also, lettuce that is browning around the edges is not appetizing. Might have to go to Dairy Queen, or somewhere else to get a REAL milkshake...

I was out of town (in beautiful mid-western Effingham, Illinois) for work and LO AND BEHOLD there was Steak n Shake across from my hotel. After eating twice my body weight in classy, tasty food at Firefly, I rolled myself over to Steak n Shake because I could. They were one of the few places open 24 hours in my home town (and located in the parking lot of another - Wal-Mart) and I spent many a weekend night as a teenager being obnoxious and eating steak burgers in those booths. So, far from Buffalo (my current home) and far from Sarasota (my home town) I managed to feel at home, sipping on a mint cookie milkshake. I don't know if I can be totally honest since I get all mushy and poetic about how S'n'S makes me FEEL down in the depths of my cold, cold heart, but I think they are pretty tasty for a national chain of cheesy diners. Their milkshakes are great, their fries are just right, and I defy you to some how go wrong choosing a steak burger. Beancrock.

I've always been scared of Steak n Shakes and avoided eating at them at all costs. I finally broke down, or was out voted and succumbed to a steak n'shake lunch. Not so bad. I had a special sandwich with chicken bacon, pepper jack cheese and some honey mustard sauce thing. I should have gone for the whole taste experience but I passed on getting a shake of my own. My companion was nice enough to share his and now I know that I will have to get a shake of my own sometime in the future. Service was friendly, fast and my glass of root beer was never empty.

One of the best steak & shake I have ever been too. Dine in is friendly especially at breakfast time. Never had any major issues except stale food at 2 am from the drive through which was apologized for with a free meal the next day. The coffee is amazing but the best asset this place has is the wait staff especially Kenda the hardest working waitress in any restaurant I ever visited.

I don't like the food, but it is the most popular fast food in the area.... It's somewhat clean and average.

I wish this Steak n Shake would close up for one day and do a deep cleaning on the entire place! The food was better this visit, but the place is still in need on a good cleaning. I suppose its the lack of adults working here. All I could see were a bunch on teenagers and perhaps one person over 21. The management needs helps! Make these kids clean the place. Sweep the floors, mop perhaps! This location never used to be so dirty! New owners and lack of good management seem to be the downfall of this place.

Another road trip stop. Went in for an early lunch. We were one of the only tables there. The beau and I both got veggie melts with frisco sauce on side. His brother got a skillet breakfast thing. When he saw pork in it but didn't see it on the menu when he ordered, they were nice enough to switch it out. Our waitress was very friendly and checked on us often. Even made sure I had a to go tea. I always like their fresh strawberry banana shakes and made sure to get one to go too.

OK, so we had been on the road for 5 hours, skipped breakfast and were starving. We hit Effingham and didn't want fast food but didn't want to go to the one trendy restaurant in the whole town because we didn't have the time to spare. Hello Steak and Shake! I hadn't been to one in over 15 years and wasn't thrilled that this appeared to be our best option. Well shame on me. This place made my day. Maybe it's because we were all hungry but we all opted for the $4 menu and lordy, lordy what a screaming deal! I had a double cheeseburger, hubs had some cheeseburger with hot peppers and daughter had the American style foot long hot dog. All came with their good, super thin french fries. For $12 you can't do much better. Their large drinks are huge and I like to pretend I'm a teenager in the 1950's and ask for Diet Coke with vanilla syruup. Heaven. The food came out super fast. Washrooms were decent adn the place was clean. Plus the waitress we had was exactly what I would expect at Steak and Shake in Effingham. Friendly, efficient, no nonense and hair out of the early 90's. We tipped her well and went on our way with full stomachs and my vanilla diet cokes in hand!

Strangest tasting chocolate malted milk shake I've ever had! Tasted very strongly of molasses! We were already on the road when I tasted it, so called to inquire. They said that they do indeed use molasses and that it has a strong flavor. They know it's very different than the normal malt powder based malted milk shake. I would advise them to make sure the customer is aware of this difference, or better yet, call it something else, like a Choco-lasses milk shake. I did drink the whole thing, though, once I knew its strange taste was by design -- not bad!
