I give this place four stars for affordability and awesome deals. The meals typically include two tacos or a burrito with beans, rice, and a drink for about 5-7 dollars. WAAYY cheaper and way more delicious than any of it's other competition around DeKalb such as Burritoville and El Burrito Loco. You also get unlimited free chips and salsa when you dine in! However, I take away one star for having less-than-stellar horchata. I'd save a couple dollars and skip it if I were you.

This place is the best taco place I've ever been to. I'm from Chicago and went to school in DeKalb. I ate here multiple times a week for years. I could not get enough. I was a "regular" and the waitstaff knew my order almost always. I'd switch it up on them sometimes. You can not go wrong with their burritos, steak tacos, and enchiladas in green sauce. The enchiladas are my fav! You guys should be open late night. Unfortunately I moved out of DeKalb but I will be back just to eat here!

This is the only place to get Mexican food in dekalb. Great service, speedy cooking, and awesome prices. I've been going here for ten years now. Sure it might be a little rundown, but it's better than the other Mexican places in dekalb. Only downside is that it isn't open late!

  • Monique C.

The food here is good and cheap! If you're looking for Mexican food by Greek Row, go here instead of Burritoville! The only downsides of this place is that it isn't as clean as it should be and it isn't open late night.

Love, Love, Love this place! Tacos Salsas Y Carnitas, or La Salsa , is a cozy little place that never fails to satisfy my cravings for Mexican food. The food is affordable and consistant. They have great salsa (thus the name) and make fantastic hot sauce. Last but not least, they do not skimp on the avacodos! I am obsessed with their bean and avacodo torta! Try this place and I guarantee that you'll be eating here at least once a week!

There seems to be quite a number of Mexican restaurant in the DeKalb/Sycamore area for the size of the community. Overall, they are of just fine quality, with a few that I will not step foot in. This place though is the best I have had in region. Tacos have been great every time I eat here and I have made it a regular go to spot for my Mexican food. Go here if u want Mexican food in DeKalb/Sycamore. Can't do any better then this place in the region.

Five stars. It's not just authentic Mexican Food; it's amazing authentic Mexican food! The breakfast plate I had was amazing; eggs with green peppers, onions and tomatoes, beans, rice and tortillas. The tortillas were perfect! They were light, not a heavy corn taste and warmed to perfection. Kids has burritos. The tortillas are just perfect! We will be back.

This is the best authentic Mexican food in the Dekalb/Sycamore area. Way better than the Burritoville across the street. Beware! The sign is labeled La Salsa and there's a caption underneath it saying Tacos Salsas Y Carnitas. This is the right place! My boyfriend and I went for the first time there a couple of days ago and all the food was so great. The burritos we ordered to go were very presentable. A little less filled compared to Burritoville's, but cut in half and not soggy. The salsas we got were very spicy, but it's not a bad thing. We also ordered the horchata, which was delicious. The other places that sell horchata in the area are waterier, but this one was packed with flavor. One thing I only had to complain about so far was the refried beans were a little too watery when we went. Other than that, this restaurant is the place to go.

Awesome steak tacos. Salsa is super spicy but good. Rice and beans are always good. Haven't strayed from that typical order.

  • Jen M.

I am a regular here, and it is consistently good every single time. To sum it up, it is way better than any Mexican restaurant in the Dekalb/Sycamore area, and it is authentic and delicious. I will be a regular even after I graduate- I love this place.

  • Pat B.

Excellent Mexican food! They start you off chips, Pico and two kinds sauce. We ordered a combination that came with a chicken taco & enchilada with beans and rice. The soft corn tortilla was delicious and combo was only $5.99. We also ordered mixed fajitas that were very good and they were not skimpy on the shrimp!

Loveeeeee this place. It's mine and my friends absolute favorite. Really the best steak tacos and tortas in dekalb. We stick with steak tacos and tortas so I can't speak on everything else but the ladies are really sweet as well. Love the food.

This place was excellent. I had a work dinner for 15 nearby and couldn't find much else...called Tacos at 11 and they suggested there meal lunch special of 3 tacos, beans and rice (and pop) for $5.99. I got 5 orders of chicken tacos meal, 5 steak and 5 ground beef. Everyone loved it and we all stuffed our bellies! Really hit the spot for authentic food, great flavors and priced just right. Thanks Tacos!!

Without question the best mexican restaurant in town. While I've had better elsewhere is quality mexican food at a reasonable price. They are off the beaten path so I think most never go past it but it's worth the trip off IL38.

  • Evan K.

At this point, this is ours hands down favorite Mexican place in the area. No other place compares for authenticity and quality. We now know the owners, who are genuinely nice folks. Food is great and inexpensive, like good Mexican food should be.

First off, I love Mexican food! I've had my fair share of it over the years. This is by far the best place I've eaten. I came here with one of my friends for dinner this Sunday evening. We were in town for an event. There weren't many people present and I was a bit nervous. Could all these reviews I read be wrong?! No. No, they were not! Our waitress was very polite and quickly took our drink order and brought them back just as swiftly along with some chips and salsa and some made to order guacamole that my friend ordered. There were 3 salsa varieties for us to enjoy. There were two in bottles and the third was a fresh salsa in a small bowl. That is the one that I chose to partake in. That was the freshest and most delicious salsa I've had the pleasure to eat! My friend absolutely loved the guacamole. We had some time to look over the menu and I quickly decided to get my favorite, tacos with rice and beans. I was crossing my fingers that I would not be disappointed. My friend decided on the cheese enchiladas with rice and beans. Both of our selections were a cool $5.99 (can't beat that). The wonderful waitress came back and we placed the order. Our food was brought over to us in a short amount of time. Things just keep getting better! The food looked so delicious! Needless to say, we dug in to our food right away. The beans have a very nice consistency and the rice was great. It was cooked properly and had a nice flavor as a traditional Mexican rice. Yum! My favorite part of the meal was tacos of course! These were above and beyond the best tacos I've ever had! The meat was flavored very well. The tortillas were outstanding! They are homemade and I venture to guess that they were made today or yesterday. They were so soft and yummy! My friend was very happy with her meal as well! All around, this is a great place to eat. My friend and I have decided that we will make the 30 mile trek from to come here again soon! It's worth it!

Love this joint. I probably come here about 4 times a month. I live by El Burrito Loco (now called "3 Burrito's or something) and I gladly go out of my way to make it to Salsas y Carnitas (also called "La Salsa Restaurant"). La Salsa is my favorite Mexican restaurant in DeKalb. The food is made with a lot of love. The 2 taco dinner is my favorite. At lunch time you get 3 tacos for the same price as the previous( $5.99) and that comes with a drink too. They DO take credit cards. I saw earlier a review that said "cash only". The ambiance is best in the daytime when the tacky fluorescent lights aren't on. This place is more of a "fast Mexican/ to go" food place than a comfy restaurant to take a first date to. But they do still operate like a "restaurant" with a waitress who brings you chips and menus and you tip her nicely please! Some of the staff do not speak very good English, so be relaxed and make sure you are getting what you want.

First, it has no sign right now and was hard to find my first time there. Second, it is in a run down shady strip mall. Two strikes like that and is still open, good sign for the food. Steak tacos are great, and a huge portion of meat. Salsas are also excellent. I'm a green salsa guy, but their red is a taste changer. Get all three when you order: green, red, and they have a pico de gallo also. Three tacos,, three salsas, three unique tastes. I have to ding them for inconsistent sides, first time: great rice, gross watery beans. Second time, dry rice, average beans. Try it out, the tacos are kick ass.

  • Katie D.

Tacos, Salsas, y Carnitas is definitely the best Mexican food I've found in Dekalb so far. I had a steak taco, beef tostada, and rice. My fiance had a steak burrito. The steak was soooo gooood. Usually all steak tacos taste pretty similar in my book, but this place made it to the top of my list. The chips and salsa were also very good. I loved the different salsas and hot sauces they put on your table. All were delicious. It was really unexpected because the place is kind of run down and simple inside. I wouldn't hesitate to go back, every time I pass it I want to run in and get a steak taco. Also very reasonable prices. Update: I had the BBQ pork tacos, decided to try something a little different, and oh. my. God. best dinner of my life. Already craving more. DO NOT GO ANYWHERE ELSE IN DEKALB.

Probably the best Mexican food in town. The chicken burrito was really good...meat was moist and there is a lot of food. I liked the salsa as well. I'll definitely keep going back.

  • C G.

Friendly staff, excellent authentic food and affordable prices. That's what you will find here. While the prices compare to Burritoville, the quality of the food far surpasses what you will find at Burritoville. The salsa they serve table side is excellent. You can tell it is fresh. The verde salsa on the burrito is also very good. Have had the steak and also the bean and avocado. Both were good. You always get a smile and a warm greeting from the staff there. NIU students on a budget, you should make this place a regular stop.

  • Mike K.

This place is really good for being in dekalb. The price is more then fair the staff is friendly and the food is pretty good. I always get steak tacos here which are pretty good and if you eat inside they give you free salsa which is awesome. Their salsa is delicious :D

  • Missy L.

TSYC is very good food. The location blends in and could be passed but it is a restaurant and their is a Mexican grocery store next store. I have always ordered tacos either Carnitas or steak and both always hit the spot. The chips and salsa at the table are fresh and tasty. The price is juuuust right. Everything on the menu is affordable, even for college students.

  • Bryan B.

Good food, cheap, and friendly service. Nothing truly extraordinary but the eponymous salsas and carnitas are darn good and the prices are great. If I lived in the area, I'd be eating here all the time. Like usual, there's a Mexican place across the street with pretty cruddy Yelp reviews that seemed like it was doing a lot more business. We were drving home from the apple farm and went with the Yelp stars and it paid off again, hopefully the locals support this place.

    (4)
  • M B.

Just in town for the day so stopped by because we love tacos. They had a wide selection ranging from lengua and cabeza to carne asada and chicken. The chicken was a little bland, but overall very good experience. Would definitely recommend it. Would have given 5 stars if served alcohol...

    (4)
  • Chris R.

Went here based on the yelp reviews... Sadly I must say that I feel misled. The place is clean and the staff polite, but the menu is pretty limited and the chow rather bland, and the tacos are kinda dry. My wife had a Carne asada burrito; I had a asada torta, and we shared a sampling of tacos - al pastor, chicken, carnitas, cecina, and ground beef. So everything was just kind of "ok", nothing was great, but not bad - we didn't upset tummies, but weren't impressed with anything we ate either. El Burrito Loco is still the best place in town for Mexi.

  • Chris C.

I had read the reviews here before heading there this past weekend for a family get together. And I'm glad I did. This place is on par with La Flor in Elgin. We ordered a lot of food, all of which was damn good, even the Horchatas. I had the steak tacos, as usual. And it looked pretty clean just by looking around the place. I wish there was another location in Sycamore. That would be damn nice for me. That's why I give it 4 stars. And FYI, if you use a GPS, make sure it doesnt lead you to Burritoville, like it did for my son's adoptive parents. Ya know what's funny? The photos of the inside was the EXACT spot I was sitting in at that table. So you get to see what I saw! LOL!

Greatest Steak Burrito of my freakin life! Go here if you want cheap Mexican that's great!!

    (5)
  • Sarah R.

This is my all time favorite Mexican joint in DeKalb. They offer very authentic Mexican food at super low prices. It's located across from Burritoville and I was once told that Mexican Burritoville employees go to Tacos Salsas Y Carnitas for lunch. Between my friends and me everything on the menu has been tried and there have never been any complaints. The only thing I would say is that the staff is very Mexican and sometime it was strange being one of the few non Spanish speaking patrons. Unless something has changed in the last year they only accept cash, but everything on the menu is affordable. They also aren't opened super late.

    (4)
  • Margaret M.

Love this place! Their steak is amazing and I am very picky. Their red hot sauce is my favorite. Food wasn't messy like a lot of other Mexican restaurants present their food around here.

    (5)
  • Liz F.

I cant believe I have not reviewed this place yet. The food is great and cheap. The staff are pretty attentive and agreed it's not the cleanest, but I would rather eat there than burritoville (which is super disgusting and the food is terrible). Their salsas are very fresh and have great flavor. They have a wide range of tacos in addition to burritos, chimichangas, and sopes.

    (5)
  • Ruth Ann M.

I can't understand why everyone is so gaga over this place. The food tasted good, but honestly, the place is disgusting! There were poop splatters in the bathroom! Management that thinks this is acceptable in a restaurant probably has a lax definition of cleanliness, which may also apply to the kitchen where your "4 star" food is prepared. I'm just sayin'.

    (1)
  • Gina M.

I only had the lengua and cabeza de puerco tacos here during a quick stop for lunch. The cabeza was good but the lengua was outstanding. The meat was tender and seasoned to perfection. If I lived here I would become a regular if not just for the kind, courteous staff but for lengua tacos.

    (4)
  • Jennifer D.

The absolute best Mexican cuisine in dekalb. I am a little reluctant to share because it's one of the best kept secrets in dekalb. Great service and the best salsas. Get the carnitas in any form.

    (5)
  • Tom E.

My go to spot for Mexican food in Dekalb. Tacos will hit what ever spot you are looking to hit. Not as much bang for your buck as others have said, but still highly recommended.

    (4)
  • D L.

The best bang and taste for your money in Dekalb. The tacos are contagious!

    (5)
  • Victoria N.

I ordered there when I thought it was TSYC, and got a carryout menu called La Salsa. They could call it whatever they want, just don't change the Burritos! Or the Carnitas! So far that's all I've ordered, and it'll be hard to try anything else because why fix it if it aint broken!

    (5)
  • Paul D.

The best mexican in DeKalb, which is not saying a lot, but the green and red salsas they provide in squirt bottles with every meal make it all worth it. Great prices. Also check out the chicken in mole sauce.

    (5)
  • Amy T.

Awesome Carnitas, friendly people, and good prices. Don't show up if you are looking for Americanized Mexican food or a high class dining experience. If you are looking for food with great flavor that doesn't break the bank then this is it.

    (5)
  • Madeline G.

We did carry-out and really enjoyed the food! We ordered a taco dinner and burrito dinner. Chicken was very flavorful as were the beans. The only reason I'm giving four instead of 5 starts is because the drinks( which are included in most dinners) are from a can. Prices were very reasonable and we will definitely be having it again!

    (4)
  • Peter C.

My new go-to Mexican restaurant now that Al Dorado is closed. The tacos are good here, the enchiladas are just OK. The sauces are a little different than what I'm used to, but green one is pretty good. They give you free chips if you dine in. Be-careful though this area is a little shady at night.

About Taco Bell

Taco Bell is a haven for Mexican delicacies such as tacos, quesadillas, burritos, nachos, and other specialty items. Owned by Yum! Brands, Inc. Taco Bell is one of the fastest growing American chains of fast food restaurants. The restaurant operates from 7,072 different locations which are mostly run by independent franchisees and licensees.

The background story of Taco Bell is interesting and inspiring for budding entrepreneurs. The fast-food brand is the brainchild of Glen Bell, who started his first food venture as a hot dog seller in San Bernardino, California. The year was 1948. After witnessing long queues outside a Mexican restaurant called Mitla Café across the street, Bell saw the opportunity and demand for hard-shelled Tacos. He reverse-engineered the recipe and later started selling Tacos and called the venture Taco-Tia.

Later, the name changed from Taco-Tia to El Taco. Eventually, Glen Bell sold the company to his partner and opened the first Taco Bell in Downey in 1962. By 1964, the restaurant also got its first franchise in Torrance. The 100th Taco Bell restaurant was opened by 1965. PepsiCo acquired Taco Bell from Glen Bell in 1978 and the restaurant brand is currently a subsidiary of Yum! Brands which looks after the restaurant business of PepsiCo.
