Royal Donut

This IS your grandparents kind of donut shop. I noticed the retro Royal Donut sign on my way toward a certain well ranked coffee shop I discovered via Yelp. The coffee shop was closed (on a Sunday morning!!!) so Royal Donut became my select! I took the busy parking lot as a good sign. As I came in some grandparent figures were exiting. My suspicions, originated when I first drove by, that this is a no frills old school joint, were confirmed! Royal Donut likely has not changed in decades and that is a good thing! Set your expectations accordingly. This is a place for classic presentations, not your maple bacons and such newfangled concoctions. I ordered the blueberry cake donut, a yeast donut with chocolate icing and sprinkles, and a vanilla with sprinkles. All were fresh and tasty. I appreciated that the case was well stocked at 11:00 in the morning, rather than being out of popular favors. The cooler was full of classic bottled sodas. If you do carbonation and/or caffeine with your sugar and fat, a plethora of choices await! On this breakfast visit I got Prairie Farms milk packaged in a paper carton. Haven't had this type of package in years. There was a funk that rendered the milk undrinkable (was within sell by date). Other reviews remark $1.05/donut is too high, but this is what DD and KK charge. Why not keep the money local? To wrap up, service is nominal, parking potentially tricky, but the end product is a treat. Worth getting off the interstate for if you have a hankering for a classic donut!
Some of the best donuts around. They are a little pricey; but the iced sugar cookies and eclairs are worth the price.
Good old-fashion donuts. Much better than the big chain donut places. Prices were higher than I expected with cake donuts selling for 1.05 plus tax.

Gross’ Burgers

This place is great! Traveling through with 3 kiddos, we found this place through Yelp. What a neat find! All they have are burgers, fries and drinks, with ice cream cones and shakes for dessert, but what great burgers they were! The fries were heavenly- seasoned with garlic and really really tasty. And they weren't kidding about the family size bag- it really was in a large paper bag ! The decor was inspiring - complete with a bazooka and the front of a jeep. It's all Marine Corp inside. We were there at lunch time and the line was out the door most of the time. Service was quick and friendly. So glad we stopped, and we'll stop there again on our way through sometime!
Stopped for an early lunch on our way to Urbana. Not too far off the interstate; got lucky and found a parking space next to the building. Order quickly taken; under $10 for a burger, double burger, fries, iced tea and bottled water! Had to get a shake, too. Under $3 for one of the best I've had. Appreciated the large straw! You have to wait a bit for your food, but it's worth it.
Worth the wait for the food! You can't go wrong with a regular cheeseburger and Gross Fries some of the best food I've had from a small burger joint.

Backdoor Pizza & More

1000 N Bowman Ave

Reviews:
Chicken Bacon Ranch Pizza is Awesome! Try it on the thin 12" lunch special for $7.99 and it was fantabulous.
We decided to try back door pizza because of prior good ratings on Yelp. We were able to call the business and arrange for pick up and the person working there was kind enough to wait until after closing for us to arrive !! True to their name, there was a sign on the front door to use the back door so we parked and went in the back door. The pizza was still in the oven hot and the breadsticks were good. There were some walnut brownies on the counter and they were offered to us for free so we we took one and enjoyed it on our car ride home. The crust on the large pizza was excellent, it was crispy and was not greasy at all. There was lots of cheese topping on the pepperoni pizza and the flavor was good. There was a little grease on the top of the pizza but everyone felt that was pretty typical for pizza. I did not look into the sitdown area of the restaurant so I can't give any feedback on that. This is a nice family restaurant.
Very skimpy on the toppings. All they would have to do is put an average amount of toppings and it would be a great pizza. Felt like I was getting a cheese pizza with toppings that got accidentally put on.

I love this place. The only good Chinese in Danville area. Their fried food is Amazing. We always get sweet and sour chicken. The chicken is fresh and tastes great. Their sweet and sour sauce tastes homemade and isn't the consistency of glue like other restaurants. Spring rolls and Egg Rolls are good. Today we tried Pepper Steak and it was better than home made! We fought over it and seriously considered buying more. It is not as expensive as the other Chinese in town and the owners are very kind and have great customer service. Now I'm considering ordering it for dinner....
Another great meal. We have been eating were for years and have never been disappointed. The steamed dumping are my favorite but the crab Rangoon come in a close second. The entrees were excellent as usual and the service was fantastic .
Yuck. Re-re-re-heated nastiness. Overpriced, and the place is dirty. No thx.

Jocko’s

305 W Williams St
Danville, 61832
Reviews:
We went there on last Saturday 8-22-15. Food was good, could of maybe had another server or too, but the wait times weeny too long. I had pizza, another had ravioli, another chicken Alfredo. Must of plated the pastas early and waited to deliver to table until pizza was done, I wished they would have asked cause pastas were warm not hot? Pizza was hot. I would of had them bring the others sooner had I known.
Traveling through Danville, we were directed to Jocko's by a local and since it was only a short drive from our motel we decided to go for it. During what was ultimately a 3-week vacation that covered 15 states this was the worst single meal we had--including the canned ravioli we ate in the rain in Yellowstone. It started with the waitress, Cayla, who was so busy socializing that it was 15 minutes before she approached us. Then, after she finally took down our orders she stopped to converse at two other tables--not working, just having friendly personal conversations (we know because she spoke loudly enough we could hear)--totaling nearly another 10 minutes before she got around to taking our order into the kitchen. Cayla is clearly very popular in Danville. At my house: not so much. Still, we're thinking, it's a small town place, a Wednesday night, why be uptight?--the food was going to be great, and---wrong. About an hour after being seated we were served. My wife got spaghetti with chili on it, which she thought was novel and, to be fair, she enjoyed. One of my daughters got the regular spaghetti, however, and it was foul--topped with something she compared to "watered down ketchup, but sweeter"--and not not nearly enough of it to cover the noodles. My other daughter and i got the worst of it, however: we went against our better judgement and ordered the "New York Style Pizza." No New Yorker would ever have recognized what we got as pizza. The crust was about 3/4" thick and gooey, not at all crisp--and it tasted like one of those frozen loaves of white bread dough had been rolled into a circle and cooked on a sheet--just a chewy blob of white dough. I shudder to think what the thicker, regular crust was like. We recognized the sauce, however--the same goop that was on Daughter #1's spaghetti. The whole mess was covered with a stiff layer of econo-style cheese. I've had better pizza at school cafeterias. Indeed, Jocko's has the distinction of being the second worst pizza I've ever eaten in my life, and only because Jocko's was cooked through (the #1 worst had better sauce). The positive reviews that helped us chose Jocko's baffle me--if this is what Danville thinks of as good pizza, then I feel badly for Danville. The trains were cool, though.
After a five hour drive my friend and I arrived at Jocko's fifteen minutes before close. Nobody rushed our order to get us to leave and they told us we could dine in and take our time despite the late hour. We both ordered a Monday special which was a very well priced large pizza. The crust was great, slightly greasy but among the best for a Chicago style. The sauce was just right, not too much seasoning but neither bland. The cheese was heaped on and the toppings were perfect. A must try in the area.
