After a few people around the area recommend our group this place we decided to give it a try. When we got there the friendly hosted sat us down in our table and immediately after we got seated our waitress came and took our drink and food order... So far so good... Our first round of drinks came around, then second round of drinks all fine; waitress super friendly. One hour and fifteen minutes later our waitress came back and said that there was a screw up with the order and our order was never put in and that she had just put in the order and that it will be out in just a few... We had to wait another 2 minutes and our FOOD WAS TERRIBLE. Everything was cold and stalled. I don't even want to waste more time writing this review as is already making me sick. Please take my advice and do yourself a favor.........DO NOT GO TO THIS PLACE

The Greek salad with filet mignon was amazing. The dressing had a little spicy kick to it. It was a huge salad that made a great dinner. My husband had the juicy burger. It was stuffed with cheese (what's not to like!) The biggest surprise though we're the FRIES. These were the best fries I've ever had! Soft and delicious in the middle and light and crispy on the outside. They were perfect!

Glad someone else was driving: don't think I could have found this on my own with Google Maps. Cajun/steak house, but walking in and checking plates of other diners in this full and busy place it looks like steaks, catch fish and burgers is what everyone enjoys around here. I shared a starter with my dinner companions: chili cheese fries that had wonderful pulled pork in it too. Very good except for the ice cold layer of shredded cheese on top. My enter was the Delmonico Steak: a cut of beef I don't run across much back home but here it was deliciously served 'medium' as I requested. The house salad, nice and plain nothing fancy, was also covered in a scoop of cold shredded cheese. My veggies sides were tasty. Parking lot here is just terrible: it was raining today and this lot was nothing more than a mud pit. Service is very slow too, and while friendly, is inattentive and leaves a lot to be desired.

This is the second time we decided to try this place. Both times was an experience like no other. And by this I don't mean it was good. While waiting for my food, and I had ample time to do so, I read other reviews on the boar. And it seems clear that they bank on one phrase, which I heard a few times during my visit. "They must have just forgot." Well... They must have just forgot to bring out the bread. They must have just forgot to get refills. They must have just forgot the dipping sauce for my food. They must have just forgot what tables they serve. I only saw the same waitress 3 times. I had to get refills from another waitress. The food was brought by a different waitress. The only thing that I got fast was the bill. The food however was actually good when we finally got it. Overall this was a terrible experience and I'm sure I'll not return. Not to mention the staff all dress like they just came from a high school party and are clearly off in la la land dreaming of the next party. Oh and... "I must have just forgot" to tip... Save your money and time and pick another location.

Great atmosphere! Great food! Especially excited about their great breakfast foods. You will not be disappointed.

Edited downward - Turns out that the Blue Boar is a catering operation, so if you get mac and cheese, they make it at before opening and let it sit on a hot plate. If you arrive at opening, you are going to be happier with their average sides. My original review is still right, all sides are out of a food service bag, except the baked potato and potato chips. After a few more trips back, every steak is full of fat and gristle. You are better off at Lone Star, and that is saying something. The ribs are hit and miss, better on a busy day, because they will not be as hard. If you are going, it is better to go when they are going to be full. The service might not be as fast, but the food quality goes up. After being hopeful that the Blue Boar would be good, I'm afraid I'm putting them on the not worth the trip list. --------------------------------- I really like the Blue Boar, but let's separate their main courses into two halves; first, the BBQ and Prime Rib are very good; second, the rest of the main courses which are just OK. Most of the sides are fine, but nothing special. No reason to order a steak, that isn't prime rib, it will be nothing special with lots of spice and sauce added in the kitchen. The potato chips and baked potato are pretty good, everything else is out of a food service bag. Stick with any of the BBQ dishes or the Friday/Saturday night Prime Rib and you will love this place. You have been warned.

OK 1. Here for breakfast. My wife and I got the steak and eggs and biscuits and gravy. The steak is very small and OK tasting eggs and gravy lack seasoning. The potatoes are great as is the white toast ( being as optimistic as possible). Biscuit are really light and fluffy. Understaffed but good service for being short handed.

I've always heard great things about this place and I finally went--and I was not disappointed in the least. The drive there is sort of confusing but scenic. The building and atmosphere are very authentic and welcoming. You get your money's worth in food; I ordered the Fried Fish Platter, which came with two sides, a salad, hushpuppies, and awesome bread, besides perfectly seasoned fish. I am a picky eater but the menu offered plenty of items that I was interested in. Finally, the service was top notch. My friends and I were there late on a Sunday night (they technically closed but they did not kick us out) but our waitress and the rest of the staff were completely congenial and quick to serve. I will DEFINITELY be going back to the Blue Boar whenever I get my next opportunity.

Love this place , food is awesome, some of the best Bloody Marys you'll find anywhere. Usually go here after hiking or one of our drives around southern illinois , but today we took my mother in law for her first visit, she loved it, she got the del monico steak with two sides, and thought it was amazing. We have tried several of the items on the menu ourselves and really like everything we have tried , with the exceptions of the po boys, they weren't bad , just weren't as good as everything else we've tried. I do strongly recommend the BBQ nachos, the blue Lou, the catfish, gumbo , pulled pork sandwich, and the sweet iced tea is especially good after a day of hiking.

This is definitely a hill billy hole. The atmosphere is a mix of big game hunter, Mardi gras, local sports bar , and antiques so there is plenty to look at but the theme is like the menu, all over the place. My wife ordered the fish plate with catfish. She was served some white fish in cornmeal batter but it was not catfish. I ordered crawfish étouffée with a side of red beans & rice because the waitress said the étouffée didn't come with rice( really?). The plate came with rice but the RB&R was the only flavorful part of the meal and thanks to a microwave the hottest too. The service was less than average. We decided not to order water after Watching the untrained bar tender fondle handfuls of bare straws with his unwashed hands! We will not be going back.

My girlfriend and I decided to try somewhere new and we were not disappointed with our choice. Our meals (burgers) were tasty, and the Irish egg rolls were fantastic, and different. We can only vouch for the stuffed burgers, chips, Irish egg rolls, and red beans and rice, but they were all pretty delicious!

We were in the area to attend a funeral and this restaurant was recommended to us by a local. We arrived a little later than we would have liked because the GPS took us the wrong direction. We were greeted and seated promptly. The menu is diverse. As I live in Texas, I rarely order bar b que of any type " out of country " but I did. I tried the ribs and they were absolutely correct. Meaty, lightly smoked and seasoned to perfection. My wife ordered a salad and some boiled shrimp the shrimp were just done and just right. Perfect. I also had a small salad and the house dressing was really unique we thought. Given the fact that we arrived right on the bubble of closing time, I thought the service was very good. I will be back for sure next trip to Southern IL.

"It's a destination..." -Dave "It's a destination....we're in the middle of nowhere, please visit us." -Steve *Dave nods approvingly* Can't lie, advertising actually works sometimes, and we were sold on the Blue Boar's quirky regional TV ad. Pure gold. But ALAS, don't let the pisspoor reviews of G.V. Halfnakedtons below get you down, this place is great! We ordered succulent smoked ribs, which must've been already smoking cuz they came out FAST, and were stupendously satisfied. The surrounding atmosphere of Ace Ventura's "lovely room of death" also sells it too: spring out back, patio, pool tables! Need to venture out here on the weekend or have a reunion with friends, perfect spot for it on a nice summer day. Keep making strange ads my good friends!

5 stars for atmosphere/location! This place has a cool open floor plan with an awesome location and outdoor seating. 4 stars for service. Pretty average here, no one went above and beyond. 3 stars for the food. Ribs were mediocre at best. Definitely not fall of the bone. I ordered the cheese steak with mushrooms and have felt sick for the last two hours. The bread the sandwich was on was delicious, but it was not your typical cheesesteak. The food was definitely lackluster, so we won't be coming back.

We had a great dinner at the end of a long driving day and it was delicious and fun. The Blue Boar was comfortingly busy on a Wednesday night. The pulled pork tacos were a meal in and of themselves and were our favorite thing on the table although we ordered the ribeye, salmon and pork chop dinners. Our waitress was happy to serve us and it showed.

I can't believe this doesn't have better reviews. Holy Moly it is delicious. I just moved to the Cobden Illinois area and have been looking for some good food. This is as good as it gets. If you like meat come here!! The fish is good too. The ambience outside is good and the inside has tons of things but doesn't look too cluttered.

Love this place. Such a hidden gem. Their best known for their barbecue and their great boars of fire barbecue team, but they also have the boars nest bed and breakfast cabins as well that you can rent for a quiet get away! I have been to boat numerous times! The owners Dave and Bob are always around and genuinely care about their guests.

Overall good food with a great atmosphere. Location is not the easiest to get to, but worth the drive if you want a relaxed meal and good food. I had the bbq nachos I was very happy with the portion size and the taste. I would recommend The Blue Boar for food and/or just a drink or two.

I have actually tried this place 3 times because of family who visits and wants to try it. I have ever had good service, rude at the best. They always seem like they have something that they would rather be doing than waiting on us. 2 out of the 3 times, we have not got what we ordered and one time the waitress actually argued with us that we didn't order what we said we ordered. The last time, they actually gave us what we ordered but the food was so so.

First of all, I should say the ambience is definitely just fine for a family. It is loud and not at all intimate. My husband and I had appetizers including the Irish egg rolls, which were tasty. The hot wings were good but slightly overdone. Our salads arrived about 1 minute before our main course and were standard fare romaine lettuce with chewy cucumbers, not crisp. My husband had the prime rib, and he always picks a few really good pieces from his dinner for me to try. He didn't know that the bottom side of the pieces he chose contained gristle. Third time is a charm, and finally got a piece of prime rib sans gristle. The meat was average tasting. I had the Cajun pasta with shrimp and chicken. I ate about four bites and chose to stop before becoming completely infuriated with my meal. The shrimp had zero taste despite being in a Cajun dish. The chicken was only slightly better. The sauce was also average. I thought we could remedy the disaster of the meal with one of my favorite desserts- bread pudding. I am not certain what freezer section in the local grocery they pulled this from, but it was the worst bread pudding I have ever had. I am not certain if we will go back to give this restaurant a second chance, but we will definitely not recommend it. If you are looking for average tasting food, loud ambience, average service, and a remote location, then this place is what you are looking for

Nice big indoor cabin/tavern with mounted animals on the walls and super friendly staff. I heard about the Blue Boar (next to Great Boars of Fire!) on the radio and took a 5 mile detour deep into the Shawnee National Forest. Listening to the regular old radio? Gollleee! I file this under my List: Luddites Have More Fun Than You. (Not to be confused with my List: Mennonites Hast More Funneth Than Thoust). The Blue Boar is a great restaurant not too far from Carbondale, and they have a nice outdoor seating and manmade waterfall. May 1 was the Blessing of the Bikes, so lookout for that next year if you need to Bless Your Ride!

Was at a reception here over tree weekend and the location is not the best or most convenient and the food was not outstanding. However the room had tons of natural beauty but no one goes to eat low standard food in a pretty place

A hidden jem out in the middle of nowhere. I am disappointed in myself that I didn't find this restaurant sooner! After graduation, my family came here to eat. When first arriving you see a bus and lights all over the place. The restaurant is surrounded by trees and lost of trees. Gorgeous environment! Not to mention the huge dinning room full of heads and southern chotskies (misspelled). The waitress recommend the nachos for the appetizer. Boy, she wasn't wrong they were so good. The nachos are literally a meal in it's self. My dad has the ribs, and said it was the best ribs he had here in the south. My mom had a steak and said her's was cooked to perfection and I had the philly cheese steak sandwich. It was good and extremely plentiful in meat. They give big portions for their prices. Overall, I would love to come back here again if I am ever in Carbondale. This place is by far the best food I have eaten in Carbondale for the price.

In all of the restaurants I have been to in the world, this place rates as THE worst in terms of service. After a day of hiking through scenic Southern IL, this place looked like a really cool place to eat and drink with its outdoor patio area views. There's even a free pool table outside. We sat down for dinner around 5pm and placed our order shortly after. It didn't appear that busy with only a few groups of people in the entire restaurant. While waiting for food, there was a stray dog roaming around inside the patio area. None of the staff seemed to mind that he was begging for food or defecated near someone's table in the patio area. Still no food for us after waiting an hour so we had to hunt down our waitress, who never even came back to refill drinks or offer bread and butter for my now-cranky and hungry kids. Mind you, the other groups that arrived and ordered well after us were eating their desert. The waitress tells us that the cooks forgot to make our order but no apologies. After waiting almost 2 hours for our food, it finally arrives and it was ... okay. The stray dog that was now begging at our table seemed to really enjoy the food. We finished eating almost 3 hours after we arrived and placed the order, and now we waited for the bill. Where is our waitress? There were only three other groups of people in the restaurant so we had to hunt her down yet again to just get the bill. We found her but no apologies other than getting one of the dinner plates for free. I don't know but if I worked in the restaurant business, I think I could do better than giving one free plate/taking $8 off total bill after such lousy service. Needless to say, I will not be coming back.

I really liked this newer place upon first visit. There are limited non-chain, good restaurants in Carbondale, IMO except for pizza. Especially at 1:30 in the afternoon on a Sunday. Most Sundays when the weather is nice we end up cruising south for the wine and for Cobden's two great eateries, Palace Pizzareia and the taco hut. The Blue Boar can be added to this list. Super nice staff, cold beer and really good barbeque are reason enough to stop in but they have really invested a lot of time and money in this place and it shows. On top of that it is kind of in the middle of nowhere with woody scenery and a waterfall out back. Al Green was on the radio outside and they seemed cool about some folks having their dogs. I really dug this place and will be back.

I'm glad we got a recommendation for this spot. Good atmosphere and BBQ. Had the pulled pork sandwich which was good, but the baked beans were possibly the best I've ever had. And this was the spot for my first taste of deep fried pickles. YUM!

I want to give this place 5 stars, but the service doesn't merit it. This place is a hidden gem. You have to know where it is, or I don't think you would find it as It is off the beaten path in the middle of the woods really. The food was definitely 5 stars. My boyfriend and I each had the pulled pork sandwich which neither of us could put down. The service was more like 3 1/2 stars though. We ordered deep friend pickles as an appetizer just to be able to say we've tried it. However, we never received them. The server brought our entrees before the appetizer and when we asked about the pickles he said they were still on their way, as if it was totally normal for an appetizer to come after the entree. He clearly forgot. We cancelled the appetizer. Our server was a little slow the whole night, but the food was delicious. The decor was really neat too. If I had the chance I would definitely go back. I would also probably get the pulled pork again, the flavor was too good!
