I am surprised by the number of positive reviews this place gets. I've been here about 5 times, and when the staff wasn't rude - which was most of the time - they were just unfriendly. The pizza is bland, salty, and greasy, and the crust is way too thin. I would take Tombstone over this place any day. I hope they close before too long and something worthwhile takes its place.

the goat cheasse & roasted red pepper slices served on Saturdays is so tasty, I could smack someones mother!

The pizza and tiramisu are great, but they really need to work on their soup and salad dressings. The soup always has WAY too much garlic and the salad dressing tastes like water. If you have your own favorite dressing at home, you may want to order the chicken caesar salad. The sandwiches here are hit or miss. The only good sandwich I've had is one that was sent to me by mistake when my order was mixed up with someone else's, so I don't even know what it was called!

Came here on a drunken night of drinking at around 2am. Not super busy. This pizza is very NY style. Very thin and greasy = love! It was a good for some late night fooding. prices for a slice are around $3-$4 (don't really remember). At a certain time late at night, they only serve cheese, pepperoni and sausage. I'd come back sober and during the day :)

I think the only reason I keep coming back to this joint is because it's a lot cheaper and quicker than the surrounding restaurants when I'm in Wicker Park. The pizza is a bit better than average when fresh. It's often not. My jaw always gets tired chewing the crust. (A problem I've never had with any other pie) The employees are generally either rude as hell, or don't give a good goddamn about your business.

The pizza is all I've had. But it is good. You can eat in and drink beer, or eat in with your kids. They have daily slices, along with usuals. The slices are pretty big, very thin NYC style. They cater to everyone vegans-carnivores. The inside of this place kinda reminds me of potbelly's, that brown wood decor. If you want a quick slice to go, they have a standing zone right in front. Looking forward to trying some sandwiches....

I've never had NY style pizza, but always wondered what is the big deal about this pizza. What is it about this pizza that people seem to love? Is it the crust? The cheese? The toppings? Is it a hate-love relationship? I decided to find out for myself. This area of the city has been gentrified over the years spilling over with "Hipsters" and hundreds of 20-somethings walking aimlessly, from sports bar to sports bar, looking for the next "whatever" dressed in their tight skinny jeans and other attire that they can barely afford. I noticed Santullo's restaurant across the street as I sat at Forever Yogurt enjoying my Pumpkin Pie FroYo. I stopped in and grabbed one slice of their sausage pizza. I immediately noticed that the grease was penetrating onto the wax paper and floating on top of the pizza. Since I've never had this kind of pizza, I thought, well maybe this is the way it is supposed to be. The one thing I can agree on is that it is a cheap, huge slice of pizza -- this is true -- but I began wondering how many grams of fat and calories it contains. The crust was incredibly soggy and spongy (it reminded me of the crust that one gets from a "cheap" Franchise pizza joint -- like the kind of pizza parents order for a Kid's Birthday bash). The crust was not crispy and had no taste whatsoever. I ate it though because I didn't want to waste food -- plus I was pretty hungry. I couldn't get the hang of how to eat this pizza, because the texture of the crust was very limp (not to mention soggy), so I folded it up. It was like eating a freakin' sandwich. It was extremely greasy pizza too. This Chicago neighborhood is always busy, crowded, somewhat trendy, has heavy traffic, and legal parking is hard to come by, basically, a pain in the ass. Take public transportation, ride your bike or walk over to this joint. The sauce was minimal and tasteless, the cheese was non-quality, but the sausage was pretty good. On a scale of 1 to 5, I rate the cheese and sauce 2; the pizza crust 1; the sausage alone gets 4; the service 3 and the price-point a solid 4. Would I get another slice of pizza here? Would I run back the next time I am in the area? Did I like the crust? No, no and no. Is it cheap pizza? Are the ingredients low-quality? Was the pizza soggy and greasy? Yes, yes and yes. I guess if one grows up on the East Coast and acquires a taste for NY style pizza, this is all they know. However, I will stick to Chicago style pizza, because it is what I like best. I'm sure there are people who will say this is the "best" NY style pizza ever, but it just didn't do it for me (maybe it is because I wasn't drunk enough or didn't smoke enough pot). I wondered how drunk or high some people were when they wrote their Yelp reviews for this joint.

Gotta love the giant slices of pizza and the excellent toppings here! I hear the salads and pasta dishes are great too. But I'm a sucker for the juicy greasy slices with the fresh ingredients. I love the different slices of the day they offer. Always gives me a reason to try something new. Service is pretty quick although the servers are a little disinterested and not up for much small talk while you're waiting for your pizza. Oh well, I'm there to eat, not to chat I guess. I'll be going back to try more slices. I always want to order 2 but I usually stick to 1 because they're gigantic!

I ate here the other day and it was pretty good. I ordered 3 sandwiches to go - 2 Chicken Vesuvios and 1 Turkey Pesto Club. It took quite a while to get these made. So long that I ordered a beer to pass time, finished it, and still had about 5 minutes left to wait. I wasn't in any hurry (this time) so I didn't really care, plus this spot makes for some good people watching. After being patient, my sandwiches were finally ready. I brought them home and dug in. I had the Vesuvio, along with my buddy and the Turkey Pesto went to my girlfriend. My Vesuvio was pretty good - decent size, plenty of flavor, good amount of chicken in it. Overall, a decent sandwich for $7. My girlfriend said her sandwich was soggy and it was. She only ate half so I took a couple bites and it wasn't that good. Overall, this place is okay - a little slow and depending what you order you may or may not like it. Worth a try? Sure, I think so, just don't expect to be out of there quickly.

Ordered some delivery from here tonight because I have a large group coming to visit this week and wanted to sample some new places to try. My super complicated order of a Caesar salad add tomatoes, a soda, and some break took over an hour. I understand delivery can fall behind but when I finally got my order my salad didn't have tomatoes on it. The delivery driver was extremely rude to me when he called to tell me he was here and when I went to get my food. We definitely will not be ordering or walking down to this place.

PERFECT DRUNK FOOD!!! I like this place. I LOVE pizza no matter what but this place it pretty good. Whenever I am in the area I usually go here. They have a kickass deal from like M-F where they have $2 slices for like an hour. DOPE!

Slices are huge, and the pizza is great. Try the roasted red pepper and feta (hipster), you won't be disappointed.

Note: I'm only rating the "New York-style" pizza. This is definitely not NY pizza. Ok, technically I suppose you could say it's NY-style pizza like the Cubs are a World-Series-style baseball team. Not bad but just doesn't make the cut. The crust has a corn meal (or some other ingredient) that is gritty in texture. Not NYC pizza. Listen, it's pizza - and the slices are big. Overall, not bad. Afterall, there is no real bad pizza in the universe so I'm giving it a solid 2.

I got the pineapple & barbecue pizza slice and their mac & cheese. It was all just very...acceptable. Much better atmosphere than Piece down the street, though.

Category: Cheapie (eating AND adding to the Vacay fund Woot!) - 2 stars (Revised from 3.5 Stars) 2 am, 2 yrs ago was the first time I tried this place. It was stink'in delicious. Now, I feel like a gambling addict. I keep going back, hoping I'll win the jackpot. Food: C- "NY-ish" Thin Crust Pizza Seriously hit or miss. When it's good, it's great. When it's bad, it is really bad. Example: most recent time I went (see pic) it was 1pm, they open at 11ish? The sausage was dried out & hard as a rock. Looked like 3 day old pizza that sat out. I was told it was just made "since they open at 11". uh-huh. At least they're gonna comp me a slice, next time i go back. And yes, SIGH, there prob will be a next time : ( Great White Slice was pretty good (only had once) Provolone/mozz cheese, red onions, garlic, sun-dried tomatoes & olive oil = drool p.s. NY pizza from NY can't be compared to NY STYLE pizza from Chi-town. Joints might be good here, but most NY places, blows 'em away. **double frown**

The pizza is good, quick and cheap, the salad is good, the service is terrible. My friends and I go here for a quick bite when we're low on time and when there are specials on slices. It's cheaper than the surrounding area restaurants and is much faster. The people working there are super rude and could not care less about the fact that without customers, they wouldn't have jobs.

I honestly think Santullo's has some of the better pizza in Chicago, but this may just be because I'm from New York and generally like that style pizza better than the typically thicker Chicago Variety. Great selection of large, single slices and open late. I can't remember the specifics of the early bird special, but I know it's for customers who come in before 5. I would imagine the bad reviews are coming from both sides. The haughty New Yorkers (full disclosure: I'm from NY) who refuse to acknowledge that decent pizza can be found anywhere outside of their city, and impertinent Chicagoans who don't take kindly to the likes of Santullo's sullying the Chicago pizza landscape with its East Coast thickness. Though it's not the best NY style pizza I've ever had, it's easily the best I've had in Chicago.

HUGE SLICES!!!! Honestly, it's as if they are trying to compete with NYC and offer you the largest, most necessarily foldable pizza in the country, so if that is your thing then by all means give it a go. I know that sometimes when I am a bit loose from the juice I need a large slice of pie(hehehehehehe) to satiate my hunger, so I always keep this place in the back of my mind. Oh yea, the pizza is also pretay pretay tasty, and for just a few dollars, the trek over here is an easy choice for me.... Enjoy Suckas'!!!

  • Michael S.

Well... it's New York style... but not really close to what you can get in NYC... The person working the register was kind of a jerk in his stupid hipster way and I didn't like that at all. Ok slice of pizza and lackluster service... Maybe I'd say this place is a 3, but just wasn't impressed with my experience at all. To be fair, I may come back to see if it was just an off experience as there are rare times I want a slice of New York style pizza.

PIZZA HAPPY HOUR! Monday - Friday 3-5pm: $2.00 slices What a fun time! The only eats place I know of in Chicago that sells bottles of Sprechers sodas and that is only one of the reasons I love it. BIG NY style slices that taste great! Not that Bacci Pizzeria garbage. Fun Fact, every time I go there it is always really windy inside. The HVAC is blowing like crazy but its so nice on a hot summer day when your nursing a cold 16oz. bottle of Sprecher Ginger Ale. If you're ever having a bad day and want to cut out of work early... hit up their PIZZA HAPPY HOUR and enjoy watching them hand toss that o so chewy but crisped delicious thin crust! You will close the day knowing that all is right and well.

Tattoos, piercings, facial hair, flannel shirts, and skinny jeans - I'm in Wicker Park alright. After a night of drinking, my friends and I found ourselves at Santullo's Eatery. It was the point of the night where anything would taste good. In an area surrounded by hipsters, it came to no surprise that the employees were all hipsters. Since the first time I had Santullo's, I have visited several other times and have enjoyed their pizza. I wouldn't consider this New York style pizza but it's a thin crust extra large slice that's close in similarity - a little thicker than your traditional New York pizza. It has more dough than what you would expect but those carbs are going to help soak up alcohol whether you are starting the night or ending the night. There aren't that many places in Chicago that offer this kind of pizza and do it right but Santullo's is one of the few that I enjoy. Some have criticized it for being greasy but that's all flavor to me. I went there again recently for a quick slice before a night in Wicker Park. I was disappointed that they no longer carried goat cheese but instead use feta cheese with the roasted red pepper pizza but it was still good. As expected, the slice was huge and was calling to be folded. The cheese was piping hot and the crust was chewy. After five years, I appreciate that they haven't changed or messed with a good thing. Santullo's Eatery, pizza made from hipsters for hipsters (and the rest of us too). It's not quite New York style pizza but it's closest thing that you'll probably find in Chicago which doesn't say much.

Things that make this place like New Yawk: -The dude behind the counter -Wood paneling -Pictures of someones grandma from the 40s Things that make this place not like New Yawk: -The taste of the pizza - Guys, expense a trip to the city on the company card, and figure out how to make it proper. I'm not from NY, but I lived in CT for 4 years and went to the city often. That did not taste the same, and it did not taste better. -The friggin' prices - yeah someplaces can be 3.50 a slice, but its not too hard to find a 2.50 or 3.00 slice in NY

  • Carla G.

Santullo's offers more than pizza? I didn't notice... This place has become a tradition for ending a night out in Wicker Park. The last time my friends and I came here we all agreed the service was terrible. I guess I can't blame them considering they have to be working so late and serving a bunch of drunks, but when drunk people notice bad service it must be pretty bad.. The NY style pizza is greasy happiness after some drinks.

One of the best thin crust pizzas in the city. Their sandwiches and salads are great too with plenty of vegetarian options. Their service is fast and good and the atmosphere is usually busy but warm and inviting. I come here often and for good reason

Its alright. Nothing special. I like that you can get pizza by the slice but that's about it. The toppings, while numerous, isn't baked into the pizza. Instead, toppings fall out when you tilt the pizza in any position other than horizontal. It has nothing compared to Ian's, who actually has creative pizzas and are baked fresh.

Recipe for success between two imposed giant sessions of alcohol consumption (more commonly known as "rehearsal dinner" and "wedding"): 1. Instead of calling a cab or jumping on the 66, walk it off at night like a champ' 2. Gobble down 20 oz of water before going to bed; repeat if necessary 3. Sleep in 4. Get up (and do your ablutions) 5. Get your hair done 6. Order the special of the day at Santullo's, and order some more to share when you are done. 7. You are r-e-a-d-y to partaaaayyyyyy!! A word of warning though: the soundtrack borders on insane meets savage caveman and if you have a serious hangover, it's probably not the best place for you. Come with ear plugs or something though, because the pie is seriously worth it. Giant, pliable slices of deliciousness, NY-style. No pretension. But sooooo tasty that you quickly forget the bear at the registrar. Also - top spot for Wicker Park hipster watching. And when your sweetie literally works next door, you have zero excuse to not go.

I love Santullo's. Cheap NY style pizza, there are vegetarian options daily. I love that they usually play good music, (Jawbreaker, Tomahawk, etc.), and loudly. Popular spot after going to a show or an evening of drinking in Wicker Park. They serve bottle and draft beer to wash down your slice. Their menu has salads, sandwiches, soups, etc. I can't really comment on it since I've only had slices. There are lots of vegan options on the menu. Service is decent, I'd suggest setting an appropriate expectation for a cheap eatery.

  • Adam S.

YES, guys who work there, you're MUCH cooler than me, b/c you work in a pizza place, are covered in tattoos, and smell like a locker room. WAY COOLER. That said, the pizza is good, and it's a great alternative to Piece after about 6:30pm, any day of the week...if you don't want to wait (the wait is worthwhile, though, trust me). I just wish their beer selection were a bit better.

I've only been here once so far but I got three slices in that visit because I'm a wanna be fatass. Anyway all three massive slices that I got (and ate in one sitting) were delicious. I got the two specials on Sunday and they were quite delicious. Really loved the double wide in particular, WOW. Anyway not really very New York style IMO but very good none the less. I really liked the sweetness in the crust or whatever they've got going on there. The staff was pretty cool and nice too, nothing out of this world but got me my food and did it with a smile. Didn't get any of the condescension some folks seemed to have experienced. All that said solid pizza, fair price, adequate service. Will be returning often.

Walked in at 10:45 on a Wednesday night. They were serving single slices at that point. There was one guy working up front. There was a cute girl in front of me ordering. Waited for her to finish. Stepped up and asked what pizza they had left. Then I ordered a slice of cheese and sausage. (There was about one whole pizza left.) They guy explained to me that he couldn't take my order. I had to order at the register despite the fact that he had just taken the cute girl's order. At this point I realized that while I was ordering from the one guy, two other guys came in and were standing at the register. A Santullo's guy came out of the back and took their order. They ordered the rest of the pizza available leaving no slices left. I explained this to the Santullo's workers and they didn't give a hoot. I've had their pizza many times before, it's meh, their mac and cheese is meh, and its certainly not dealing with dishonest service to walk over there and potentially not even get something to eat. I will never return.

For a pizza place surrounded by other pizza places, you might think Santullo's would work a bit harder. They knew I am a vegan (having asked for a vegan slice), yet it was not until I had already ordered an entire $30 pizza that they told me they were out of Daiya cheeze. Essentially, I paid WAY too much for dry seitan and cooked veggies on average dough. The guy taking orders was also the guy answering the phone, making for a long and awkward interaction. Finally, they were out of silverware? They had plastic on hand, but it was strange. I would never recommend.

After a long day, which quickly turns into long night of a liquid diet this is my destination! It seems to be many others go to spot as well. They are open until 3AM, so no matter what time that hankering hits you - you can count on Santullo's. Late night menu only features three types of slices, cheese, sausage or pepperoni, but who needs a plethora of choices at 2AM. The pizza always comes out hot, tasty and oohh so greasy perfect for sopping up all that alcohol that's been brewing in your tummy all night. I almost forgot to mention the free entertainment from all the other patrons and passerbys on the sidewalk. Trust me grab a booth near the door and enjoy the show and the pizza.

  • Greg S.

The pizza here, when made properly is the best NY style pizza in the city, hands down. The staff however leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to customer service and consistency. Some times they will serve over baked pizza that is burnt/ overcooked. Other times sauce or cheese is non-existent. When you ask for them to fix it, the look at you like you are inconveniencing them and make snide remarks or give dirty looks. Management need to step up the game and make sure the staff appreciates the customer before they take their business elsewhere.

    (2)
  • Laura B.

Meh. I heard a lot of hype about this place so I was interested in trying it out. The service was quick, which was appreciated at 2am since I was not in the mood to hear any more drunk warbling from other customers. Their register was jacked up so it was cash only, but since there's a BofA ATM next door, this wasn't a huge issue. Pizza was cheap, gigantic and hot. New York style isn't my thing but this seemed authentic enough. I guess it just didn't really wow me? Definitely just pizza for the sake of pizza -- not terrible but definitely not my favorite. Piece next door will forever hold my heart....

    (3)
  • Lakshmi R.

If you grew up on the East Coast, you may want to consider moving in here. Why? - the pizza is seriously thin and seriously needs to be folded to be eaten - it's delicious - they pie-slice it. None of that rectangular Midwestern nonsense. Also, cute boys work here. Major perk.

CLOSED by the department of health for rodent infestation and open waste and oil containers (large green sign on window). Blech! i just puked in my mouth. Think i'll be eating at Piece more often. What are all the late night drunks going to do now though?

So, yeah. Eh. It wasn't bad as such, but a lot about it wasn't great either. I'll put aside my frustration that I was trying to go on a Saturday night. I should know better than to agree to dinner in Wicker Park on a weekend. but I digress. My friend and I went, in part, because he was intrigued by their vegan options. And they have them, but we discovered upon arrival that they only do vegan slices on Monday and Tuesday. So, he went with a pasta that had vegan sausage (it was ok) and the vegan italian sub. I had the regular veggie sub, which was tasty enough, but not really worth a second trip there on purpose. I had read various bad reviews of Santullo's before i went. One of them referenced a roach running up the wall behind the booth. I have to admit that colored my experience. Fortunately, I didn't see one myself, but I kept getting.a creepy crawly feeling as I ate. I know places have them, but I really don't want to see one. Other reviews talked about bad service. I have to say that we did not experience that. Actually, the girl who took our order was very sweet. So, I wouldn't go back. Not in purpose, at least. Like I said, it wasn't terrible, but the food wasn't good enough to make me want to put up with the amount of metal they play too loudly.

my search for a good cheap ny slice in chicago continues.... I had heard this place had good slices and a good deal for a lunch happy hour. So I went and grabbed a slice of cheese and pepperoni. If this pizza was fresh, it would of been good, but it was pretty stale. I'm not talking like 2 hours old stale but like a day or so. My friend got a spinach salad that looked awesome though... but I should of followed the reviews and not come here sober, or order a fresh pie.

Bahm Pizza- Happy hour from 3-5pm. If your in the area and need to take down some food. This is the spot. Absolutely the best bang for your buck I have visited Santulllo's on average 2-3 times a week for about 2 months now. Wooohoo. Yum yum.

  • Rag C.

This is definitely different from the run-of-the-mill pizza places you find in Chicago with Italian sounding names. Thin Crust is they way they roll here and the size of the slices are also bigger than usual. They have 2 pizzas on specials for every day of the week and I think all of the pizzas are freshly made which is why it takes a little bit to get your order. This is a landmark in Wicker Park and you ain't doin it right if you don't check-in here! I'd have given it a 4.5 but there are no decimal ratings unfortunately.

"Slice of NY in Wicker Park"? Utterly disgraceful to NY, more like "Huge greasy floppy fake gross pizza resulting in total disgust and slight outrage". Santullo's served me two of the worst slices of pizza I've had in Chicago. I had a sketchy feeling when their "slices" weren't on display when I walked in, but ordered a meatball special and a pepperoni. The downfall of these slices is primarily their unnecessarily large size which causes a total lack of stability, abundance of grease, and disgusting crust. The crust lacked airiness (you know when air bubbles form on good pizza, that wouldn't be possible with these slices), it had a peppery spice mix baked into it, and overall it just tastes like bread not pizza dough. I'd rather eat Dominos. They say insanity is doing the same thing repeatedly and expecting a different outcome - I guess I am insane to continue trying "pizza" here in Chicago... Dare to dream.

It's Pavlovian. The mere word "Santullo's" starts me salivating. When someone says, "let's get pizza" my mind immediately goes to the gloriously thin, floppy, oily goodness of Santullo's unabashedly east coast slices. There is a time for deep dish, and there is a time for wood-fired oven pizza. (For instance, when Santullo's is closed or not within walking distance.) Seriously, this is pizza. This is deliciousness. If you eat at Piece when you could be eating at Santullo's, I feel bad for you. You and I probably don't have much to talk about. You like things that are expensive and mediocre; I like things that are cheap and mind-blowing. There's no contest.

Searching for a quiet place to enjoy a meal, we stumbled upon Santullos and were delighted. The sliced roast beef sandwich with sauteed peppers and horseradish was melt in your mouth delicious. Another person dining with me had their sandwich on pretzel bread- the bread on both sandwiches was toasted perfectly and had wonderful flavor. Soft folksy music and quite conversations amongst creative people made this stand out as the type of establishment one hopes to find when going to Wicker Park. A comfortable, homey and casual place. It could use an update on the yellowed newspaper articles clipped and put in to cheap plastic frames (perhaps some fun art from some of your patrons?) and a good cleaning. Not the worst I have seen but a little more attention to housekeeping would make the place a stand out.

  • Mikey M.

A buddy and I dropped by for a post-beer snack and the pizza was pretty good. We arrived an hour before closing time so the selection wasn't as varied as, say, going during peak hours. However, the place was nice, folks running it were pleasant and the atmosphere of being able to watch North Avenue traffic while munching on snacks was pretty cool. They had a nice small selection of beer (I saw a Bell's Oberon but didn't have it) so that was a plus for my next visit.

  • Steve M.

Santullo's has HUGE whompin slices of pizza! They're NY style, so think huge, fold in half, use your paper plate to soak up all the grease that drips out of the crease at the bottom (that sounds gross..). In terms of taste, I think they're just OK. I can think of plenty better slices in NYC, but for a taste of NYC in Chicago they fit the bill.

    (3)
  • Ann Marie B.

The hot sandwiches are sooooo yummmy. Never had a whole slice of the pizza... not really a fan of NY style pizza cuz I'm a die hard deep dish lover. Over all this place is pretty good, like I said their sandwiches are awesome. They also have a great pepper jack mac n cheese that's so good too. Only bad thing is it's a lil pricey for the size of your meal but it's in a good spot and you know you will always be satisfied leaving.

Finally, a place I can bring my meat eating friends without making them suffer! Santullo's vegan pizza is really, really good. All of their vegan options were surprisingly tasty. I highly recommend it!

I'm a fan of thinner New York Style Pizza that you can fold in half and eat, with a little greasy drippage for good measure. Was surprised to get TWO Giant slices instead of one for my order! I got their special which was White Pizza today. Delish! Santullo's is more of a lunch type spot with a window bar, a few high top tables, and a few booths, but if I lived in the neighborhood I would definitely put them in my pizza rotation!

My experience at Santullo's last Saturday (June 18th) was one of my worst restaurant experiences in the city. My party of four ended up at Santullo's because our initial plan to go to Earwax for pizza was foiled by their return to their old (pizza-less) menu. We wandered about for a bit, and Santullo's seemed like a good choice. I was the only person in our group who was vegan, but I wasn't particularly hungry, so I knew that, even if they didn't have anything for me to eat, I could wait until I got home. Anyway, while the other 3 people I was with talked about what toppings they wanted, I went up to the counter to ask the two people there if they had anything vegan. I should take a step back first, though. On the front door is a flyer saying that the restaurant carries items from Upton's Naturals, which makes vegan meat alternatives. Just thought that might be important. So, I ask if they have anything vegan and they both laugh, one harder than the other. My partner was standing next to me by that time and was as shocked as I was. One of the folks at the counter then proceeded to show me a trophy they had for best vegan pizza and then said, "Yeah, but we don't make it." I still don't know if he was joking or what. It was bizarre. I decide not to order anything because this isn't the sort of place I want to give my money to. While we waited for our pizza, one of the people in our group looked at the receipt and noticed that they'd been charged too much. Here's how the menu breaks down the prices for a full pizza: $24 for a pizza with three topings $19.50 for a pizza, plus $2 for each topping Instead of being charged the $24 for the pizza with three toppings (which is what was ordered), they had been charged $19.50 plus $2 for each topping ($6 more). Once our pizza came, a member of our party said there was an error on our check and asked if we could have the difference back. He asked us what the error was and when we explained (pointing to the large menu across from our table), he said he didn't understand and would be right back. When he came back, he proceeded to "explain" to us that we actually got it cheaper than $24 because we'd ordered drinks. What? I asked him to explain to us how $19.50 plus $2 plus $2 plus $2 is less than $24 and he said he didn't understand, but that we definitely got the order cheaper than even the $24 listed. Again...what? The drinks were listed separately, nothing was deducted, and our total was $29.50 plus tax. He once again said that he didn't understand and said he'd get the manager. Fair enough. However, when the manager came over, he was incredibly rude. He told us the same thing the waiter did. Once again, I asked him if he could explain how $19.50 plus $6 (which is what our bill had on it for the pizza and toppings) could be less than the $24 we should have been charged. He said that we didn't understand. Finally, he sarcastically asked, "Well, what do you want me to do? Do you want your $1.50 back?" Excuse me? What was with the attitude? We said yes and he practically threw the money at my partner. It wasn't a big amount of money and I rarely write reviews, but I feel like I have to warn folks that the employees and manager the night I was there were some of the rudest folks I've run into in a while. I'd never go back and would definitely warn people away from it. Also, if you're going to give folks who are vegan attitude and don't want them buying anything in your restaurant, you might want to reconsider advertising vegan products on your front door.

Talking to a friend while we sat at the booth. A. Giant. Cockroach. Starts crawling the wall behind her. I know if I tell her, she'll freak out, and maybe the bug will attack her and/or me. But I can't stop looking and thinking about it. It's about 3" long. I can't even formulate sentences. My friend is thinking I'm having a stroke. When it sufficiently crawls farther up the wall, I grab all of our stuff and move to another booth. They hold true to their New York roots. Also, the pizza was kind of burnt on the bottom. What's up with that?

Like many places in the Neighbourhood, as there are sooo many, I have walked by the place far too many times. Needed to find a place to get a little filler before part II of the evening and popped in here for a Slice, wouldn't you know I fell into a Three Way! No you perv's it was the slice of the day. $4.00 for a good size slice of delicious cheesy foldable pizza! Perfect to take the edge off and get you ready for the rest of the night. BTW... Monday - Friday from 4-6 it's Happy Hour... what does that mean, $2.00 Slices.

Just like the three star rating description states, Santullo's was A-OK. The slices are large and tasty. The place has the feel of Potbelly's, with big booths and lots of wood. Service was standard, menu was standard. My main gripe is that they have really cool sounding specialty pizzas, but only one is offered per day. I guess if I had gone on a day that offered one I liked, I wouldn't see this as a negative. But since I'm not into margarita pizza (Thursday), I was pretty bummed. (For those who do think they like margarita, be aware, my bf did order it, and it has almost no cheese. Just like one little circle of mozzarella, otherwise it's just sauce and tomatoes). I'd go again, but I'm not in any hurry.

Love NY style pizza. This place is a good spot to stop for a slice real quick. But I've been in here once or twice when the employees were playing super loud, horrible music. I'm not a fan of heavy metal or hard core, so being forced to listen to that super loud while eating would not be my first choice. Aside from that, pretty decent place. The giant slices of pizza are bit too greasy, but I'll be the first to admit.. sometimes a little greasy hits the spot. Just dump some Parmesan cheese on, if you can't handle it.

Really like this place. Great slices of thin crust pizza. Great selection, cool different options depending on the day. Good vibe. Will be back.

It's a friendly place with decent pizza. It's easier to get into than Piece next door and that is a plus. The combinations of toppings are creative and tasty. Only a couple of complaints. I brought a friend from out of town to sample a slice. She ordered the the three-way. When served, it had a large piece of burnt cheese (we think) right on top. It would have been good to remove this before serving. I had vegan chili, which was actually pretty good (for a pizza place). Anyway, I would come again but would probably not go out of may way if other options are available.

Shit. This is my new favorite place for people watching. Here's whatcha do: Call your friends. Meet them at Santullos. Grab a sandwich, fountain soda, homemade tiramisu. Sit at the window bar/counter. Enjoy watching the passer-bys and talk smack about them all. Best thing about this place? They offer seitan. Snap.

I really do like this pizza place. There aren't very many of them in Wicker. This one was delicious. The staff was friendly and helpful. I had the Luau pizza (bacon, Canadian ham, pineapple, etc) Hands down the best Hawaiian pizza I've had in a while. I look forward to trying more pizza.

When I lived in Chicago, Santullo's was my go-to tasty pizza spot. Now, when I fly back to visit I hop on the blue line direct from the airport and go straight there. No joke. Love the prices, love the super-thin ginormous slices and love all the cute fuzzy-faced boys serving them! winning!

Santullo's pizza is ok . I think that it used to be better when they had homemade carrot soups and goat cheese pizza (about 1 1/2 years ago). Anyways, I always go for their daily specials. This Tuesday it was the Brickhouse pizza (spinach, large mushrooms). The pizza was good but what I didn't like is that my pizza came out soggy ---what I mean is that the dough was not cooked all the way and the front of my pizza was caving in. Also something about the corner street bum wondering inside for a second made me uncomfortable about this place. I like that they have 312 on tap. For now no special cravings for Santullo's for me.

If Kuma's burgers require anger as an ingredient, they should really hire the white skinny guy behind the counter. He'll definitely serve anger flaming HOT! Came here with a fairly large group, which probably prompted the door slamming and cussing rampage. Doesn't matter though. The pizza and sandwiches tasted fresh and the backdrop hip hop brought back memories of Nas and Biggie. Would definitely come back for some more awkward, unnecessary lashing for entertainment.

Great food for the price, without a doubt. First two visits I got one of their sandwiches and most recently I tried their pizza- a huge sandwich for $7 or a massive slice for $4 is reasonable and both were delicious. They have different flavors of pizza by the pie and by the slice every day and I look forward to trying more of them.

New York style pizza? The pizza here is nothing like the stuff I had in New York. Santullo's serves the greasiest pizza I've ever encountered. My slice had a soggy crust, and a layer of grease encapsulated the cheese. Yuck! The sausage was too chewy and salty. I also tried a cup of soup, and it too was salty and oily.

The pizza is decent. It's cool that they have Uptons Naturals seitan products. I tried the vegetarian sandwich yesterday and it was pretty good, if a little small. The music is a little annoying/loud sometimes but I still come in here once in while just because I like how laidback it is.

I've never had NY style pizza so I can't compare it to that... but pizza wise, this thing was delicious! we got the brickhouse (sausage, pepperoni, roasted garlic, red onions, and green peppers)... i'm drooling just thinking about it. I loved the sausage! and the garlic had HUGE chunks just sitting everywhere. it's easy to pick off if you don't like it, and its absolutely delicious to just eat the whole clove. 20" pizza??? it's ridiculously huge!! (see posted pic for reference) i can wrap this thing around me like a blanket if i wanted to! there was 2 of us, each STARVING... and we killed half the pizza and thought we were going to explode. the crust is a little hard but with a 20" pizza, who cares about crust right??

The staff in here makes me laugh, though usually not in the good way. Today the register clerk let his friend cut in front of me to order. I wasn't in a hurry, so I just shook my head in bemusement, but what really tickled me was the guy's scarf. Dude, it was 87 degrees today; leave the scarf in your closet. Another time the girl making my sandwich hurled curses at me for attempting to confirm that she was making it without mayo as requested. When I turned to the other clerk with my mouth agape, he apologized and said that it was her last day. I wonder if that was true. I like their sandwiches--oven-baked on Italian bread. The salads are uninspired but at least they use quality ingredients. The balsamic vinaigrette dressing is crap. The pizza is slightly thinner than true New York style but it's very good. It's oh-so-floppy and structurally unsound, so fold it in half and get to work. Please note that the $4 variety, mentioned by other reviewers, is the "Slice of the Day" which uses fancier ingredients such as grilled chicken, goat cheese, and roasted red peppers. Plain old cheese, pepperoni, or sausage is $3.25. I wish that I lived in the neighborhood so that I could try Monday's, Wednesday's, and Friday's specials. Beer on draft is a nice, unusual touch for a joint like this. Only $4 today for Trumer Pils.

It is amazing how bad customer service can truly ruin an experience despite the quality of food. My advice to the employees here, I know life is tough and busy sometimes, but man up and make eye contact with your customers. Don't ignore them hoping they will go away. You'll be surprised how positive people can be about a 30 minute wait for a salad when you apologize and smile.

We just ordered take out from this place and it was over $200. When we went to pick up the order the manager, whoever he was, yelled at us for ordering so much food not far enough in advance. No one said anything when we called about this. We didn't get part of the order we paid for (ordered a dozen cookies) and when we called back about it the same manager yelled at us for not knowing that the bag of cookies was sitting separately from the order and we didn't know. Then he reprimanded us for tipping only 10% (because of his terrible attitude) when you really don't need to tip anything for take out. We were celebrating and this guy ruined our day twice. I don't know which manager it was but we will never go here again. Sorry for giving you business, we won't make that mistake again.

dude, santullos is the awesomest and cheapest place to go for thin crust, noo-yawwwk style pizza. don't be ashamed. this is not just a late-night joint. it's okay if it's a saturday night and you're craving inexpensive, delicious pizza, and you actually sit down and eat there. no judgey. no one cares bc it's good pizza. they have $2 slices from 3-5p m-f. they also have daily pizza specials - specialty pizzas if you will. if you've ever partied in wp/bucktown, you know that santullos is always a GREAT idea. if you think their pizza is good sober, it'll be sprinkled with unicorn horns when youre 5 sheets to the wind.

I... I... I think I'm hearting you Santullo's... And we've only been together that one time. This time, this first time, I'm the one rushing things. Should we go exclusive? I've been on a summer quest to find East coast style pizza, and as of yesterday, Santullo's is the winnar!! I ordered a pizza, half cheese-only, and half pepperoni & mushrooms. My delivery service (my wife) does not have one of those fancy bags to keep the 'za warm, so I microwave every slice precisely 43 seconds. Anxiously, with an elevate heart rate (might be all the sweet tea I'm drinking), I start with test number one... I fold it. Goal goal goal! It folds! Cheese and sauce start dripping off! Test number two has been passed without any cheating (like squeezing the folded slice)... A bit... Yay! Loved it. Test number three... the crust. Was it chewy, and was the underside just a little brown in spots, ie. pulled just before it would start to burn... YES. Passed! I went over the border and started eating the cheese-only side, which I had ordered for my boys... and it was better! I've decided I will no longer order any 'za with mushrooms, I don't like how they influence the taste. I will say their mushrooms were probably the freshest I've tasted in a while, I'm just becoming (a little too) picky. Test number four.... Do I contemplate hiding the leftovers so that (mine mine ALL mine) It's guaranteed that I get to eat them? I will admit in the anonymity that is the Yelp, that I did hide them in the vegetable drawer. Test number four was also successful. I have three more places to try before I crown the king. But until then I'll look for excuses to drive by there in case a spot magically opens up in front the restaurant, because we all know that is no coincidence, that is fate. I'm a little gushy in this review, but I got a little verklempt last night. I will most assuredly go again.

Santullo's is hands down my favorite pizza. To understand the weight of this comment, one must consider my childhood. As an infant, I would refuse the bottle. Formula meant nothing to me. My parents would have to food process slices of pizza and put it in a sippy cup to get me to eat. As a toddler, my first word was "slice", and as a teen I didn't know my own home address but I had memorized the number to Domino's. Point being: I know pizza. I know it like a life source. Price: $3.50 a slice, or $2.00 a slice during happy hour (3-5pm mon-fri). Mon-Fri lunch deals 11-1pm include a sandwich with free cup of soup and a drink. Pretty sweet considering the quality. Food: They have a huge variety of slices, very creative in fact. The 3-way is 3 types of high brow cheese that basically melt in your mouth and send a zing through your jaw when it hits your tongue. The cheese slice is a classic. True New York style. Big, thin, chewy. Greasy? Beyond. I'm not a huge proponent of grease, but that's why they invented napkins. A few dabs will part ways to the flavor. The sauce is tomatoey, the cheese gooey and flavorful, the crust perfect (unless they burn it). Good as lunch, dinner, or after a long night of adult beverages. 1 slice will make you pat your stomach, 2 slices will make you unbutton your pants to breathe. Truly worth a stop in.

This is poor pizza and very poor NY style pizza. Sure the pies are big and thin, but those don't make it NY style. NY crust should be soft with a charred outside, this is gritty and dry. NY has a subtle sweetness from the tomatoes, basil, and olive oil; this is salty.

This is one of the only places in town to get New York style pizza. Unfortunately, it's probably quicker to fly to LaGuardia and back than the 2 hours 10 minutes it took for the delivery guy to arrive (ordered via grubhub). Adding insult to injury was the fact that the pizza arrived an hour after its estimated time. When I called grubhub to complain after 1.5 hours, Santullo's told them that they had forgotten to update the arrival time and my pizza would arrive in 5 minutes. 25 minutes after that, we finally got our luke-warm pie. Thumbs down for service (although I have to say that the pizza is pretty good, now that we've warmed it in the oven).

Hands down the best NY Pizza in Chicago! And also my favorite place to grab a slice or pie! I don't know what has happened over the last 2 years but the service is so nice! That really means alot to me especially when death metal is playing :) Every-now and then the sauce gets too spicy but I still love it! They offer uptons seitan & pepperoni:) Which if you have not tried it yet it is the BEST vegetarian unmeat ever! Also they sell their dough uncooked for 3$

Sunday pizza was good, big, and exactly what I wanted. Hip hop was good, but I think it fired up our chef just a little too much. At first I thought he was just into the music, but then he started slamming shit and throwing stuff around. He was acting a little too hard for a little skinny white guy. Other than that it was good. Even the cashier was like wtf?

I really hate this place. The level of rudeness and unhospitality in this place gets me every time I walk in. The flow of the line is messed up, meaning the counter by the door where the menu is, where you think you order, is indeed where you pick up, so you get this weird bunch up of customers ordering and waiting tripping over themselves. This would be fine, except that the staff all act like total dicks about it, rebuffing you if you dare make the mistake of asking a question if your confused at what is going on, as you can read in other reviews on here. Are they also pissed off at the awful design and taking it out on customers? New customers walk in and feel lost, and when they sheepishly ask to order (as there is no clear line going on), the staff is always rude, with a snarl, telling you to go over there as they point over their shoulder turning their back. I've seen rudeness work, sometimes it's fun, but here it serves no purpose, and isn't outlandish enough to be funny, just enough to leave you fuming as you wait (a while) for your food (which routinely comes out out of order). It's also clear that this isn't a couple random employees, but the very ethos of the joint. As someone in food service, I'll never understand why the owners would want to propagate this attitude. It's dirty too, but that doesn't bother me at all in a cheaper place. I'll also add that I've never been to Santulos on late night weekends, where rudeness would be more understood and accepted, maybe even appreciated, but during the day of all kinds of days. Ridiculousness, get your act together tattooed pizza guys, you ain't that cool... The pizza itself is decent. I've been here a handful of times and always successfully eaten. No real complains on the food quality, except the slices are never the same size, so the times I've gotten a smaller slice I feel jipped. Standards guys. But even though I'm out and about all the time grabbing food to take home in the neighborhood, and I would like to be eating a lot more $4 slices, every time I walk by I just shake my head and think "idiots..." Bottom line, the people working there seem to have little interest or care for their customer. Being rude isn't chic in and of itself. I hope you go out of business like the dick that was running the cigar store a few doors down. is it so hard to treat the people supporting your business with a little kindness and respect? Snarl at your own risk.

Totally post-night-out spot for a large slice. HIGHLY looking forward to a "NY" slice after living there for a couple years...and this place came recommended. Too bad when we stopped there at 2:40am after slurping down a few birthday loves, we stood in line for about 10 minutes and they said they "ran out of pizza." LAME-town.

Cheap super sized slices of pizza. We came here around bar time and all they had was pepperoni pizza because they were so busy. We would have liked to have tried some of their other dishes....maybe next time. The staff was friendly and apologetic for their inability to cook anything else.

Santullo's, this is gonna hurt me more than it hurts you... A few years ago this would have been an easy 5 stars. I love(d) their pizza. I hadn't been in a while so my daughter and I stopped in for a quick slice. There I am thinking to myself "this isn't *as* good as I remember it: when I felt a tickle on my calf. Strange, I thought: I haven't peed my pants since I was two. Then I felt it again. I shook my pant leg and out came a cockroach! First off, NO, I DID NOT BRING THE COCKROACH IN WITH ME. More importantly, I'm relatively forgiving about bugs and varmints. They exist and they go to where food is made. Even the cleanest places will get one every now and again. BUT THIS PLACE WAS NOT CLEAN. There was left over food all over the tables. The bathrooms were filthy. This wasn't during a rush--there were 3 other people in the place. This cockroach did not exist in a vacuum and--judging by the reaction of the clerk--this wasn't the first time this had happened. Epilogue: I informed the guy behind the counter about our visitor and he discreetly disposed of it (with rubber gloves.) He apologized but didn't offer to comp our food. I get the hipster vibe. Flyers advertising your bands on the walls? Fine--I've probably played in some of those bands. Graffiti on the toilet stalls? I guess it's to be expected when you're open after bar time. But this place has crossed the line into just being filthy. I would like to believe that there will be an exterminator there tonight after closing but somehow I don't think there will be. There are too many good pizza joints in this city to go back here again and that saddens me.

In this situation, it's all about the good, the bad, and which one outweighs the other: The good: This pizza is REAL FREAKIN' GOOD! Best NY style pizza in Chicago! Their toppings are always tasty and that Happy Hour deal is spectacular. The bad: The staff are a bunch of whiny-ass punks. Whenever we get on the phone for delivery or pick-up, they bitch about something or other. Their delivery hours are weak, even on the weekends. One night, they decided not to deliver to us due to the weather. Really?? We've been trying to use a coupon for a good 2 months now, and they keep cooking up reasons as to why we can't use it. And I've heard a LOT of similar stories. Oh, and the soda machine is horrible. Nothing but syrup every time! So in this case, the bad slightly outweighs the good. Awesome pizza is everywhere in Chicago, so I would expect a pizza place to try and be not only good at pizza-making, but also good at service! These dudes very blatantly don't give a crap, which means I'll be way more likely to go somewhere else.

As all displaced New Yorkers living in Chicago know, there is a disconnect between us and the rest of the local inhabitants when it comes to "pizza". Chicagoans turn their nose up at NY Style pizza in large part because of an ongoing feeling of second tier status to the Big Apple. Hence, NY Pizza in Chicago is a rare find. 16 years living here and I must say the award for NY Pizza goes to Santullo's. One of the most tell tale indicators is crust. The crust here has that crisp yet chewy quality, the flavor of it basic and not superflously flavored. The sauce has the right amount of sweetness to it. And the cheese...that golden orange glaze on the top which says to me, "greasy goodness will drip out of the back of crust when eaten in the NY style "fold". I make my trek from Hyde Park to Wicker Park to get my fix. Well worth the 15 -30 minutes drive and making it a non-friendly carbon footprint slice of pizza for me. I have discovered a few other NY style places....but this one stands heads above.... I must surmise that the negative reviews are from non-native NYers...so don't be misled.

LOVE the sandwiches. Pizza is always good, especially if you get the daily special (Wednesday is the best). Only small complaint is that I've had some issues with staff before; they can be slightly rude, but I usually forget about it once I get my food. Also, the delivery service is quick and great (just don't get the pizza - it will obviously be soggy by the time its delivered).

New York style pizza and plentiful. A friend introduced me to Santullo's and I am thankful for that. It's now one of my favorite go-to thin crust pizza joints. It's delicious and the slices are huge, so one really will fill you up. They also have fantastic mac n cheese! My friends and I love it so much, we even had it at our annual "Festivus" party. It was random and stood out, but it was devoured in no time! Yum!

I don't like Chicago style pizza. When I'm eating, I don't like there to be any question as to WHO is eating WHAT. Chicago style pizza makes me question this basic truth in the eating dynamic (people eat food = good; food possibly eating people = bad). I have never had that confusion at Santullo's. I usually eat here when I wind up at one of the many bars/lounges in Wicker Park. Sometimes, I placate my usual crabbiness by telling myself that after the club is closed, I get to wolf down a couple of slices of pizza and gulp down a cream soda. Mmm. I like the emphasis on black pepper in the crust. I like the floury taste. The sauce is good, the slices are big and the sausage is...sorta flaky. Crumbly. That's the word. It's good. I steel myself for cleanliness issues. It is what it is. And I have been fortunate enough to not have suffered rudeness from the staff. But I chalk that up to the fact that I am batshit crazy and will go circus freak insane on an emo kid with attitude. I will. I have. And I've done the community service. Do: come here. Get two slices. Get a carbonated beverage (to settle your stomach as you eat - if need be AND to churn up more stomach acid to counter a lack of cleanliness in preparation - if need be). [MOST IMPORTANTLY] Have some crazy in your eyes. Crazy trumps bitchy. It's a rule. Come with the crazy and you won't have to deal with rudeness. You'll get your pizza and all will be well.

I walked in here and it was not exactly clear what slices they had that day. I tried to order one of their specials only to realize that it was not the appropriate day. I asked for a couple of slices of mushroom and went along with my day. The pizza was decent. I am not sure I would seek this out again, but if I am in the neighborhood again and the hunger pangs hit, then I wouldnt be opposed to making a return visit. I realized after that it seems like they have a bunch of cheese, pepperoni, and sausage slices ready and can add whatever toppings to your slice after the fact. This is different from what the other places do, so I wish they had a sign that stated this or at least had a list of toppings somewhere obvious.

I was walking down North Ave, being hongry for some pizza. I hoped that Piece would have slices cause I hear good things, but alas, they're not into slummin' it with the slices for the single girl on the move. Losers. There were some obligatory indie kids in the windows of Santullo's chomping down big slices so I stopped in. I wasn't impressed with anything but the thinness of the dough. I was going to give them 3 stars, but Sharlene K. - a well known pizza critic - helped me see the folly of my thinking. And she's right, it is too soggy, bland, wet, saucy, etc. What's more, the ginger beer in bottles, was Not gingery. Not Santullo's fault...except it is, because they carry it. Jerks. Who wants weak gingerale? People from Wisconsin who believe every "Authentic NY pizza" sign they see, that's who.

How far is Heaven, you ask? Well, that depends. How far do you live from Santullos? BEST slice in the city! Boy, I miss living around here and going out around here and eating Santullos every time. Great slice of cheese pizza. Every time! Really great mac'n'cheese too! And you can order a beer? OMG. What more do you need? And this isn't just drunk food. This 'za is good all day, every day. I hear they have delighful sandwiches as well, but once I get set in my ways, its darn near impossible to change. However, as I write this review I notice on the sidebar that they have seitan products. I vow to look into that on my next visit. Which I wish was today...

Santullo's in Wicker Park is def one of my fave pizza places. I love the Margherita pizza and their Italian sub sandwich. All the ingredients are fresh, food is beyond flavorful, service is friendly. What more could you ask for in a pizza joint? I def recommend it if you're looking for something local and low key on the Chicago north side.

I went in on Tuesday night for vegan pizza slices. Wowzer! These things are huge. I was impressed. I am also glad it wasn't crowded. I would go back in a heart beat. The staff was also very kind and accommodating.

If you think that pizza is part of a healthy diet, stick to the Whole Foods Vegan one. One bite of Santullo's New York style thin and greasy goodness will move that scale forward--fast. But sometimes, this is just the fix you're looking for.... Look, it's not fancy and it's not any of these higher-brow pizza parlors. For dirt cheap, you'll get a slab of pizza, large than your head, and you'll slop it right up because it's greasy goodness. It's like french fries. What normal person doesn't like them? Forget the delivery--just go inside for a quick meal, especially after a night of debauchery. This is just the panacea for all those sinful drinks you may or may not have consumed before you stumbled in here.

The chicken vesuvio sandwich is like crack. OMG it's good. Haven't had the pizza yet, but that's next on the list. The guys behind the counter might look a bit unkept, but that doesn't mean they don't keep up to state and city health code. The dudes are pretty friendly.

Pizza by the slice. I go there on the way to work and grab a quick bite to eat. The music is crazy and i like how it's done so quickly. Inexpensive for easy, fast, good pizza! Can't go wrong with this spot.

Staff was screaming at customers to get the fuck out and go home. Tables full of old pizza and used plates. Cashier refused to give out change or serve whole pies. NEVER eat here, go to Clark's or taco joint.

Delicious! Try the "Hipster" pizza with red peppers, feta, and red sauce.

  • Peter C.

I loathe deep dish pizza. Sorry, rest of Chicago, but your signature "pizza" is not pizza. Santullo's is a welcome dirty NYC-style slice joint. It is not gourmet pizza, but it is damn near what you'd get at a good slice joint back east. In my book that's a compliment. They deliver super fast, which is great, but they really should offer something other than XLs for delivery. For now and for this neighborhood, it's our go-to spot.

Thank you Santullo's for embodying your hipster roots. Guy @ cash register - "I don't think we can take credit cards at this point". Cool. Thanks for the information. Either you can, or you can't. I've been here many times before, and the pizza is typically 4 stars, but it was subpar this visit. Perhaps the pizza oven guy and the register guy are related, as the our pizza was poorly constructed. I just can't get psyched to be treated like a Bucktown denizen every time I go in here. Luckily, the Piece staff next door treats you the same. Groovy.

I normally dont like NY style pizza, its too thin for me, but this pizza was pretty good. I added some parm cheese and they had a great amount of pepperoni on the slices. I will go back, but $9 for 2 slices of pizza w/o a drink is a little pricey.

  • Mike S.

Must order a whole pizza if you prefer fresh, but they've got a lot of slices that'll work if you don't mind it. The music when we went was, headache producing. Not a bad option if you can't get a table in a timely manner over at Piece.

If you love Scandinavian Death Metal to eat your grease laden thin crust (ala the NY slice) pizza at 1 am...This is your place. Veggie options. The samiches are not bad nietha. Usually filled with disheveled drunk people putting grease in their belly after all that mistake juice. Just to paint the toilet with it a few hours later. Don't get me wrong, I like the pizza, and sometimes question the quality of the help, BUT AAAAH! It's big ass pizza slices in the am! Oh yeah refills on the sodi-pops.

Big slices of New York style pizza with any toppings you want. The pizza is extremely crazy big, and is swimming in grease, but it's actually really damn good! I like that you can add any toppings and still walk off with a really cheap meal. I recommend this place, but it's nothing super special.

FINALLY a place that sells "NYC PIZZA" that actually compares to NY pizza!!!!! THANK YOU! Having recently moved from NYC, I quickly realized that, aside from deepdish pizza, Chicago DOES NOT know pizza. I have searched and tried many terrible pizzas. Santullo's has come the closest. Don't get me wrong, it doesn't rival any NY pizza I've had, but it does take care of my pizza cravings now.

I feel the need to review this place if only for the great sandwich I had there. It is not the place for meaningful human interaction with the staff, nor for ambience or cleanliness (It took me awhile to find a fairly clean table in this self-service joint.) But I love their Chicken Vesuvio sandwich. It is really unique and reminds me of Potbelly's for the size, type bread and good flavor. In fact, the place could be easily described as the love child of Potbelly's and Bean's and Bagels (or as my friends describe it "Bongs and Bagels") In a service sense, you feel like you are interrupting some kind of private indie rocker party by asking for a sandwich, especially if you are a geezer like me. The music they play I'm sure has never been played before on any restaurant PA system. And the room and atmosphere is something like a faded and unkempt Potbelly's. I did not try the pizza here, but I would definitely come back and do that. I noticed they have a different pizza special everyday. And I would come back for the sandwiches again, too. Maybe try a different one. It would be nice if they added coffee to their beverage lineup as not everyone is a soda drinker. But if you like a delicious baked and crispy sandwich, filled with tender chicken, peppers and garlic, check it out.

Solid, reliable, NY Style Pizza. Big floppy slices that won't let you down. If you're down for some grease (which I totally am) then this is your place. If you're not alone, or training for an eating championship, then you can get a 20" monster of gooey cheesy heaven, But the box is so big that you might knock over a gaggle of hipsters' bikes parked out front. Be graceful with your pie.

I went here recently to grab a slice before going out on a Saturday night. We were lucky that we were able to grab a table, although it isn't absolutely necessary, considering the type of food they offer. I only had a slice, but it was a really good one at that. Monster, New York style pizza.. They have daily slice specials with a variety of awesome topping combinations for only $4, but since I'm kind of plain, I went with the pepperoni. You can't beat the taste and size of that slice for only $3.50. If it's any indication of the quality, I was back for more in less than a week.

"Why can't we all get along."-Rodney King. The argument between NYC pizza and Chicago Style is dumb. They're both awesome. They're both different. So why argue? So where to you go to get a great slice of pizza? There's no argument, Santullo's is the place. Their pizza not only is a good slice option in Chicago, it could give most NYC pizzeria's a run for the money. (Let's be honest, NYC has some great pizza spots. But really 80% of them are terrible) This is a place where you want to keep it simple. By the slice can't go wrong with the basics. Slice of the day, depends on what it is, but they're typically good. If you order your own, which is the best way to enjoy, it's important not to go crazy with toppings. Three to four is just about the limit. Best part of this place is the crust. Soft in the middle with that french baguette crust on the outside. Let's stop arguing and start embracing. Pizza doesn't have to be the same.

This New York style pizza joint just down the street from us is a regular weeknight "we-don't-want-to-cook-or-dress-up-and-look-cute-and-go-out" alternative. More often than not, we're in sweatpants and t-shirts ordering a slice with a frosty mug of beer. The slices are huge and unlike their next door competition, Piece, the prices are low, so you can't go wrong with that. Don't get me wrong, Piece is worth EVERY penny, but sometimes we don't feel like spending that much money, ordering that much food or dealing with that much fratty-ness (sitting inside) and Santullo's is the perfect solution.

  • bobby e.

A punk rock pizza place? Yes, thanks. The food is usually good, the prices are modest. Recently changed their happy hour by-the-slice hours which breaks my heart a little, but rarely have I had a bad experience here. I like to go and sit a while and enjoy some food and refills and loud angry music.

Each time I pass this place, I wonder how it stays in business right next to Piece. Now I know! They're open at all hours of the night during the weekend. I'm a more "late night hot dog or taco" type person....so pizza after 11pm really crosses my radar. After a night filled with a bit of dancing and drinks, my friend was adamant that we get late night pizza. Where? I asked...we only have Flash Taco & Arturos...where can we get pizza at like 2am on a Saturday? Piece is closed. This Boystown wonder walked me to Santullo's. Wow, I hung my head in shame...I've lived in the area for a little over 2 years, and I had NO idea this place was opened late...and I pass it almost every day! My friend ordered bc I was staking out the booths and immediately plopped myself down in one when one opened. Therefore...I have nothing to say about the service. We did have to ask the ppl next to us for Parmesan tho...our container was empty. I guess this is like NY style pizza? We got 3 pieces of sausage. Wow...huge slices. Did I double mine over and eat it like a proper person from Brooklyn? No....I ate with a knife and fork. Hey...don't judge. The pizza was decent. The crust could have been a bit thicker, with a bit more cheese...but I guess that takes away from Santullo's style. And...the grease...wow, lots of grease. Yes, I will be back again to cure a potential hangover....after all, late night pizza is hard to resist, especially in Wicker Park......and I do need to move away from the hot dog thing....wait, which is less fattening?

A few years ago, I was a huge Santullo's fan. It was all about the sweet giant pizza-by-the-slice deals, the staff was cool and the pizza was always tasty. I get that it's open late and there's the pizza happy hour thing, but fast forward and the place is on a steady decline. Stopped by a few times in the last year (usually during non-rush times) and it's always the same. Dirty tables, less than friendly/helpful staff and even if you don't really care about dirty looks and dirty tables, the pizza is pretty off. No way near the same quality it used to be and instead of thinking about splitting a second slice with a friend, I'm thinking about giving up on this place. What happened Santullo's? I miss what you used to be.

Delicious!! And cheap! I came here for the first time with a friend last Saturday and was pleasantly surprised. So pleasantly surprised that I ended up craving more slices last night. The slices are huge, bigger than the plates they're served on and only $4! The service is pretty fast and friendly. I only wish the place had more seating, it can get kinda crowded in there late at night. Last week I tried the "spinach to finish" slice and last night I had the "hipster" slice. They were both really good but I think the hipster is my favorite. Its roasted red peppers, feta, and asiago cheese, sooo good!

  • Andy L.

Good New York Style Pizza. Folds up great and tastes pretty good. Sometimes soggy as its being served by the slice. I really like Piece better but this is my go-to "hammered drunk and need food" spot. Cheap slices from 2-5!

  • Rich K.

This place deserves its ranking on the top 25 pizza joints in the city by Chicago Magazine. Friends had been talking about this place for months until I finally tried it last weekend. The pizza definitely lived up to all the hype. If you're used to restaurant staff that is engaging, warm and lovable, this isn't the place. If you want great pizza without the pretense, then this is your spot. Santullo's has become my seond favorite pizza shop.

    (3)
  • Pete V.

Santullo's is my "go-to" for pizza by the slice and a beer to accompany my cheesy deliciousness. Most pizzas are $3.50. They have happy hour from 3:00 - 5:00 pm here, which is the bomb (if you can make it here at that time). Regardless, it's a laid back spot with really good thin crust pizza. You can't go wrong stopping in at Santullo's for a slice or two.

The place is ok if your looking to dine on the cheap this is the place. We order the sausage pizza combo it comes w chips and soda. Pizza its ok the slices are big but i expected more sausage than just 3 little pieces :( on the slide. Mac & Cheese is good and the oat meal cookie as well.

Hands-down, it's THE CLOSEST to a NY slice that I've had in Chicago. I don't care about the atmosphere, the service or the people. I came for the pizza & finally found the thin slice that you have to fold over to eat (with an added bonus of that little puddle of grease on top). The cheese slice is the only way I go. No, it's not NY.....but remember, we're in the midwest! ;)

If you are a New York over Chicago fan in the Pizza wars, this is your spot! I like places with personality and this has a cool, rocker ambiance so thumbs up. They are usually playing some obscure heavy tunes that match the vibe and decor. I like it. I always want to find out who's playin so I can run home and check the itunes. But then I have a feeling it might be one of the staff members bands by the styles and body art. I have only tried the pizza but the sandwiches look good and like I said, if New York style fold over pizza is your fave - you won't be disappointed.

great local business that offers good new york style pizza at a great price. The atmosphere is what makes this place. The sandwiches are also good. Not a lot of flash to them but they are good. Overall a very unassuming place with inexpensive above average food.

This place right here? Yeah its pretty damn awesome. I honestly am a little weary of pizza places because a lot of them put on too much fake cheese, or the dough is undercooked..or overcooked...well you know the drill so I'll spare you. Not the case here though. This pizza is PERFECTION. Not to mention Uptons Naturals are a topping option (um, can you say "hell yes"? AND they have Metropolis Coffee? Pft. Sign me up as a customer for life. p.s. I've read about the little pest problem, but honestly I've yet to see anything with my own eyes. And trust me, I'm afraid of vermin so I'll see 'em if they are near.

I think the horrible counter girl is now gone, since I've been back twice and did not get horrible service!! The pizza is thin, greasy and floppy- my favorite kind. And where else in Chicago can you hear an entire Cock Sparrer album while enjoying a slice?

  • Lois A.

There was a period of time last year when I was coming in here twice a week to order the Santullo sandwich. If I would start thinking about it during the day I would need to have it in my belly that night. Oh yeah, and the pizza slices are huge! One of my out of town friends always requests a trip here to get a slice. I don't know why but the last two times I've come in to get my sandwich fix I've felt kind of sick after eating. It's heartbreaking because after loading it up with parmesan cheese it tastes like a million dollars in my mouth. It's a classic Italian with salami, pepperoni, and provolone bursting with onions and herb mayo and seasoning. Maybe that is the problem, the whole "too much of a good thing" can kill you dilemma that's been around since the dawn of good food. I love you so much, how can you hate me?.

Best pizza-by-the-slice I have had in the city. Huge slice at a great price. (NY style pizza) Don't expect much from the staff or the decor, just grab a slice and sit down -- you will not be disappointed. [They are open till 3am on Saturdays, so if you find yourself in Wicker Park and you are intoxicated...] Must try dishes: Sausage Pizza (I think they use cumin seed in the sausage)

The pizza here is absolutely delicious. I always get their specialty pizzas because no matter what day of the week it is, its freaking delicious. Goat cheese, asiago, green pepper, roasted red pepper, roasted garlic, its all good. The prices are very reasonable too, especially considering the area. Sandwiches and soups are really yummy too. The reason I am knocking off two stars (Because really, the food deserves 5) is because of the employees (who deserve zero stars). They are rude and inconsiderate of their guests. Tonight, I went to eat with a couple friends, and my friend and another guest saw a mouse run across the floor. It was a tiny mouse, but a mouse nonetheless. We called to the employees, and they just sat there with a vacant look and went back to chitchatting with each other. We were like...okay....My friend said that if he hadn't already paid, he would have left. We saw the mouse run by again and called to the employees again. My friend asked if they were going to do anything about it. One male employee very rudely replied, saying "Well what do you want me to do about it?" Oh, I don't know, call an exterminator, try to catch it, act like you even pretend to care that there's a mouse in your restaurant for the sake of your customers....We could even hear them mocking us behind the counter. I have always gotten a rude attitude from the employees in the past, but this really tops it all. My friend even said that he thought one of the people behind the counter was the manager.

Why oh why is it so hard to get some NYC style pizza in Chicago? I ordered delivery from here after researching places that are close to my beloved New York pizza. This, is not it. First of all, it was freaking giant size (and expensive), in a bad way...meaning so big that the slices flopped around in a pool of its own grease. Oh, the grease, the massive amount of grease. YUCK. I don't recommend this place. Nope.

    (2)
  • Ed R.

I've only tried the pizza here, so I give it 3 stars so far. The slices are nice and big, but the toppings are hit or miss. The pepperoni slices have a good amount of meat, but the sausage has hardly any. Prices are reasonable, 3.25 for normal slices, 4 for the daily special The happy hour special, which is $2 slices from 4-6 everyday, is a real bonus if you're able to make it. The service is a bit on the slow side, but they do have a small staff, so I can deal with it most of the time. Overall, I would definitely recommend this place if you're in the area, but not really worth a trip out of your way.

  • Benjamin B.

New York style pizza in Chicago is a concept that simply should not exist, and for it to be rooted in reality is even worse. This place mostly just sucks... but they have a good sammitch or two... so I'll give them more than one star. But geez... that pizza is foul as hell... it's like eating decomposing Tupperware, backed with rotten cardboard that is drenched in the runoff from the Exxon/Valdese spill. Don't forget to order your "slice" with dead, oil-laden, baby seals as a topping, tres bien, merci! /vomit

THIS IS AN OPEN LETTER TO JEROME K Recently Jerome K took it upon himself to slam me for saying that I did not like Santullos. Jerome K is what the ancient Romans would call "An ASSHOLE". He has no reviews and obviously has something to do with the place. He really did not like the fact that I said that the time I went in there were no fountain drinks. Jerome K... I went in there today Tuesday July 22, 2008 at 6pm like I said I would and guess what telephone tough guy.... The same thing as last time(which was about a month ago), The Fountain drink machine had a sign on it that said "OUT OF ORDER" I will admit that the brick oven pizza I had was OK, Something that I could get at the Woodfield Sabbarros.... Jerome K FUCK YOU**** And Santullos sorry but I wont be back

Hipsters servin' up some damn good pizza, on a PBR drinker's budget. I got a nice big slice of New York-style Goat Cheese and Roasted Red Pepper and a side of potato salad for $5.18. The pizza was delicious, not too heavy on the sauce like most Chicago joints. The potato salad was cheap ($1.50) but not very good (too salty, not sweet enough). For those that commented on the hostile hipster vibes, of course you're going to get a little 'tude here, hell the whole neighborhood economy thrives on it: high quality goods and services with a salty demeanor. So the LP crowd and the suburbanites think they're getting "Chicago with an edge". Whatever. Their sandwiches are good too, but I haven't had one in years so I can't really comment. They're open until 3am on weekends, so if you've ever found yourself wasted in Wicker Park on a late night (which means everyone besides Mother Theresa), you can suck down some greasy food here.

I'm not a huge fan of New York style pizza but I love Santullo's. Large slices for cheap! And during their pizza happy hour, slices are $2. A cheap good meal. I'm not a huge fan of the music or decor, but I understand it's the type of environment and culture Santullo's represents. I like the array of flyers by the door - makes Santullo's seem more like a community. Love it!

  • Andrew M.

I didn't think the pizza was anything great. I mean it wasn't bad but it wasn't good either. The staff there was not very helpful and the guy kind of threw my slice onto the counter in a very disinterested manner. It didn't bother or offend me; I just don't think the food and service combined merits anymore than 2 stars. If I'm hungry enough though, I would probably go back.

Awesome NY style pizza that's pretty close to the originals all over NYC. Great for lunch, after drinking, dinner. Nothing comes close in Chicago.

whenever i'm waiting at Piece, invariably with a group of 5 to ten people, invariably for an hour plus, invariably getting pushed around by sports fans and douchebags alike meandering around the bar, and invariably pounding Golden Arms, I entertain the idea of sneaking down to Santullo's to grab a massive slice to hold me over. It's not as "artisan" as piece, it's just a basic pizza joint (with Wicker Park prices). I'm a pretty straight forward cheese 'za type of dude, and Santullo's does not disappoint in that department. However, I did get the veggie sandwich (dunno what its called) and it was gross. so pick to the basic giant slices or the giant pie and you'll be a-ok.

I knew Wicker Park was going to shit when I was having a beer and eating a portabello slice when I heard four muscular backward-hat-wearing, unironed-striped-shirt wearing men of unusually large pectoral muscles ask the punker behind the counter "hey man, what's a good bar to go to around here". I asked myself "what the hell are they doing out of lincoln park"... and then they came in droves. Vegetarian: It's pizza come on!

  • Kimberly K.

Yum! Pizza slices as big as your head! This is a great late night place. I've only been there after a few drinks late at night, so my judgment might be impaired, but i love this place. It's dirty and they have fairly inexpensive, huge slices. You can also watch the throwing the dough in the air. What more could you want? It is the perfect place in Wicker Park cure the late night munchies.

  • Jackie S.

I love the pizza here!!! It is big, thin, just the right amount of greasy, cheap, has great special toppings, and the place is open really late. I always get the pepperoni which I love. My only concern is without fail the sausage pizza is always smaller then the other pizzas and this causes my boyfriend and I to fight bc he always wants to eat a few bites of mine bc he feels it's unfair that my pepperoni is bigger. Please even the slices out, I don't need my night ending in a fight or watching my bf pout.

  • Ryan W.

Such a cute little NY-style pizzeria, perfect for a quick and cheap alternative to Piece! Their pizza is delicious (and huge) and their beer is cold and inexpensive. It's a cheap and quick bite to eat before a night out, but is certainly not a destination spot for dinner.

    (4)
  • Erin J.

Boo! Boo and boo again! Their pizza is only passable, and the service (or lack thereof) takes the cake. Just awful. Rude, rude, rude. They didn't honor a promotion they had earlier this year on Superbowl Sunday, and the manager flat-out denied they were running any promotions at all, even when I showed him the ad. Like I would freaking create one and somehow make it look legit! It really wouldn't have been so terrible if he weren't just a GINORMOUS ASS about it. Never again.

I don't know what's up with people giving this place a bad rating (maybe its the dark decor, maybe its the heavy metal blasting in this place. They advertise themselves as "NY style pizza", and its EXACTLY that! Thin, greasy pizza slices that makes you think you're somewhere on the east coast. I've been on a hunt to find decent pizza in chicago for the past year, and this place is definitely the best I've tried (Piece might be a distant second). If you're a tourist and want to try deep dish (once is enough), go somewhere else. If you're a person that wouldn't mind eating pizza every day of the week (like me), go to Santullo's.

YES!!!!!!! The people who work here are cool. Hipster-cool. Not hipster-lame or hipster-annoying or hipster-overt poser. Which is usually how I associate so-called "hipsters." Daily deals - lunch and pizza-wise. The pizza is really tasty - and one slice is very big. I like the standard pizzas here - cheese, pepperoni, etc. The sandwiches are good also, and the soup. You can custom order things, too. They serve beer! Great place to go after work, hop off the Damen Blue Line, grab a slice and a PBR, you're set, and cheaply.

    (5)
  • Anjee J.

Not my favorite pizza, but better than many places and besides, their lunch/happy hour/whatever it's called special cannot be beat. $3 for a giant slice of pizza and pop?! Hell yeah, I'll take it! That kind of deal is ridiculous in Wicker! If I wasn't kinda health conscious I'd eat here more often, as I work in the area and lunch tends to average $10 for me, but for those of you that aren't, it's the place to be. Skip the sausage, it's pretty flavorless, but the pepperoni's great.

So one thing I've been sad about since I moved to Chicago is the pizza. I grew up eating doughy pizza, with nearly a breadstick for a crust at the back, and thin but sturdy crust to hold up the toppings. The Chicago Deep Dish pizza isn't pizza to me (although I will readily admit it is tasty). And the thin crust, while good, just isn't quite it. So when I heard Santullo's had NY Style Pizza, I got pretty pumped. The place is fairly small, without a lot of exciting decor. But I don't go to restaurant for the decor - I go for the food! The pizza at Santullo's is....average. It's good, but it isn't anything FANTASTIC. The crust is almost too thin on the bottom, so if you aren't careful when you pick it up it just flops in the middle, letting your toppings slide away. I had bacon, mushrooms, spinach, and pepperoni on mine - they seemed to take a handful and dump it in the middle of the slice. At least the toppings were plentiful! At first I was sad because the mushrooms looked canned, but they were actually marinated/jarred mushrooms - still not quite like fresh, but definitely a step above the yellowy canned crap. The slices are huge, and I like that you can order what you want on a single slice. My friend's sandwiches also looked good, and were eaten quickly enough. Overall, if friends wanted to go to Santullo's, I wouldn't say no, but I don't think I'll necessarily return on my own.

Santullo's is the perfect late night Wicker Park eatery. I've been here twice and have enjoyed each time. Great, big New York-style pizza slices served up fast and hot. Much better alternative than Flash Taco, Underdogs or Skewerz. For 4 bucks, get the three-way slice with asiago, mozzarella, and gorgonzola. Deleesh.

Thin NY style Pizza. But I go for the chicken sandwiches. Service is nice. I always feel like I'm being taken care of here. It's a very reliable place to grab a quick lunch at a 2 minute walk from North & Damen.

This place went downhill fast. The eat in pizza slices don't even cut it anymore. Went in during the dinner rush and got a slice that looked like it fell on the floor and was picked up upside down. Flimsy, greasy and runny. Not a combination for pizza. And is it possible for the workers to look any more disinterested and pissed off that they work there?

As a cashier, I am used to rude customers. I usually go out of my way to try to cheer up the guy behind the counter, but the people here are so rude that they make me want to give up. Their pizza is unremarkable at best.

  • Phillie P.

I love the pizza here. Big slices of DOOM for the figure. Dab the grease off and prepare to chow down. There's a variety of ingredients and did I mention the "happy hour" where slices are just 2 bucks. Dine in only. I guess I'm sort of hip because the staff has never been rude to me. The chocolate chip cookies are good too. I feel all sorts of full when I go there.

Something about seeing a scuzzy guy cut up the pizza with his hands, put it in the oven with his hands and then give it to you with his hands just isn't really appetizing. Also, as someone who eats his weight in trans fats weekly even I find the grease to be too much. When drunk only.

  • Mel K.

One of my favorite pizzas in the city. The crust is perfectly thin and there's not too much cheese. Kind of wish they had smaller sized pies, but then again, I don't mind eating the leftovers.

Roaches! That's all I should have to write! But I'll go into further detail...I have been going here for awhile. I was so happy to find a place that makes New York style pizza that actually reminded me of the real thing. I did notice all the times I went there that the tables always had crumbs and wasn't to clean. But I gave them the benefit of the doubt. Maybe it was a busy lunch and they hadn't gone around to cleaning the tables. Well unfortunately that's not the case. This place is nasty. I was there eating with my mom when we noticed something on the wall crawling. Yep....a HUGE roach. Not the small ones...the ones you would call a waterbug! I almost threw up right there. I threw away the pizza and walked out. After this happened I started reading some reviews on here and saw that I was not the only one this happened to. There are SEVERAL reviews where roaches were seen. This is disgusting and I can't believe this place is still open. Will NEVER go back and I hope they get closed down!

Although it's a pizza joint, Santullo's is usually my alternative to grabbing an Italian sandwich if I'm too hungry to walk the two blocks east to Lucia's on the way home. Their pizza slice servings are greasy and huge, NY style crust (NOT a deep dish fan), and they do happy hour 4-6 p.m. where a slice is 2 bucks. Decent beer selection, the booths are great for people watching, and it's inexpensive. That being said, it's a shame that it takes FOREVER to get my food every single time I'm in there. The Clerks-esque staff behing the counter may find each other really funny, but your half-baked inside jokes aren't doing it for me when I'm starving after work. Quit trying to form a complete sentence and get me my pizza, because hey, it's cheap and delicious.

  • Jonathan C.

This place has got a couple of things going for it, location, hours, general cleanliness. But (I can't believe I'm writing this sentence) I think the pizza is too greasy. The crust is just too wimpy to stand up to the cheese and toppings, and is usually soaked through and wet. Even fresh out of the oven the moisture is too much, rendering the crust instantly soggy. Maybe if they went easier on sauce or cheese they could achieve balance with the crust. But I can't really support this pizza. Toppings seem to be good quality, prices are a bit high, but that is sort of par now in this neighborhood. Nice sit down place to have open late at night though.

  • Nathan W.

Had a slice of "The Hipster" - Goat cheese and red pepper - though It's a bit of a disconnect between the name and ingredients if you ask me. Cream soda they have is really good, but it's not like they made it there.

  • Alexis H.

I heart Santullo's and all its pizza goodness. I'm definitely not a regular here, but I can tell you that it certainly hits the spot when I'm craving some good old fashioned New York style pizza. I particularly love getting a slice of cheese when those late night, post bar cravings hit. Some great deals: $2 early bird slices from 4-6 M-F, and daily specials that cover any pizza lover's dream for $4. I don't know that I'd ever order a whole pizza with so many other pizza options in the neighborhood, but it's my number one choice for pizza by the slice.

    (4)
  • Natalie R.

Not bad, not bad. Actually, pretty good. And fast. And cheap. And open late. Good choices for veg's too. A great alternative to late-night tacos. And yes, they even have beer!

  • JESS G.

If I could give this place less than one star, I would. The food is ok, but not worth the poor customer service. I had to repeat my order three times because the guy behind the register was more interested in looking out the window than he was in taking my order. If you're too bored to give me decent customer service, I'm too annoyed to ever go back to your restaurant. This place really is not worth me giving it a second chance and I honestly recommend that you do not bother giving it a first chance.

    (1)
  • Roberto F.

Not really impressed with this place. The crust just doesn't taste right. Anybody who has had pizza on Sixth Street in Austin, will agree that this pizza tastes very similar. Not a fan and never come here again unless a miracle happens or I am out ruled by the democracy of a group.

  • Bruce W.

Love it! Awesome pizza at a fair price and old school metal blasting while you eat! We actually stayed for an extra 2 pitchers just because they were playing some mid 90's black metal and Mercyful Fate! Keep it up guys and gals.

Santullo's is a nice joint in Wicker Park that offers pizza by the slice, whole pizzas, and sandwiches. I can't speak for the sandwiches, as I've only ever had the pizza! Being a native Jersey girl (ha!), Chicago-style pizza has been a major shock to me. It's nice that I can get my fix of thin-crust, foldable pizza at Santullo's. While the sauce and cheese are pretty right on, the crust can vary depending on the kind of pizza and time of day. But overall, Santullo's is a great place to grab a good slice of pizza in Wicker Park.

    (4)
  • eric f.

yes after living here for 3 years i changed my review from "maybe" to "yes". this is bc there are no good pizzerias in the neighborhood where you can get SLICES (supposedly nyc style, but maybe "thin crust" is a better description). having tried other places santullo's is definitely the best. their slices can be inconsistent, sometimes too sloppy/floppy, but mostly good. and i sincerely enjoy the weird punk-rock-pizza-barn atmosphere.

    (4)
  • Maria C.

good old santullo's. I like the huge pizza they have here. It's pretty cheap and when you're drinking it's even better. I like the happy hour but you have to eat it there.

  • Becky S.

I have a thing about pizza needing to be cut in big, floppy triangle slices. Don't ask. Santullo's fulfills that fantasy, and then some. We came here last Saturday around 11 p.m. after taking one look at nearby Piece, shaking our heads, and leaving. When we arrived, the place was empty. We got a whole pizza and pitchers of beer and enjoyed watching the cute hipster boys behind the counter toss pizza dough and rock out. Oh, and the pizza was surprsingly good. Huge, triangle slices (yay!), all hot and bubbly, with mushrooms, fire roasted tomato, and spinach. I'm usually not a veggie fan for pizza, but it was very exciting. By the time we were finishing up our food, the place had filled up. I probably won't be running back to Wicker Park anytime soon, but I will partake in triangle cheesy goodness next time I'm there.

  • Sarah C.

This place is terrible. If I have to wait this long for my food, I expect it to be good. Not the case. The pizza is impossibly soggy and dripping with grease and the sandwiches are completely dry and tasteless. Santullo's is an overpriced waste of time.

    (1)
  • alicia g.

My favorite items on the menu are the $2 early bird slices and the Tomato Mozzarella Pesto sandwich-BEST. Santullo's is the place you go to if you are in Wicker Park and don't have time or money to eat at Piece, but that doesn't mean its not amazing. It's so good (sober & not sober).

    (4)
  • Rob R.

Floppy as a golden retriever's ear, salty like the Hudson, this is the way pizza was meant to be, the way it's always been if you've always eaten pizza under the shadow of that giant green girl.

mm Santullos is 1 of my favorite pizza places! Really yummy big triangle NY Style tasting pizza slices! Now don't get me wrong iIt's not totally NY Pie but, it comes pretty close!

Excellent new york style pizza. I love going on Wednesday evening for the 'Great White' which features provolone and Mozzarella cheese, red onions, sun-dried tomatoes, big chunks of roasted garlic and olive oil. So good. All their classics are good.

  • Natalie G.

I love Santullo's pizza. You can get a large and split between 4 people and have no problem. It's great, good priced NY style pizza. It always comes so fast and the people that work here are always so cool.

I love Chicago, but I'm a New Yorker through and through. I will never like Chicago pizza and love that this place has the best pizza I've had in Chicago - New York style. I'm so glad it's in my 'hood!

    (5)
  • Seth G.

Ended up here because Piece had a long wait. The slices are huge and definitely new york style. Pepperoni slice was a little greasy but delicious. Slice cost $3.50 which is the same as Ian's but they are much bigger. They have less variety than Ian's, but who doesn't. Also I cannot say enough about the frosted mug provided for the pitcher of beer we ordered.

I actually hate this place. They're in a good spot and open late, so they abuse the fact. The guys who work there are usually @ss holes. The pizza is ridiculously overprices and it's not even good. There is a guy who sells similar quiatlity pizza for $2 outside the Mexican place on six corners (Milwaukee, North, and Damen). The crappy pizza at Santullos is $4 for a regular slice.

    (1)
  • Clare K.

Tasty, quick, NY style pizza by the slice. Go for the happy hour--slices are super cheap!!

    (4)
  • Kirstie S.

Reasonably priced sandwiches and pizza slices...nice thin NYC style pizza and their specials are usually delicious and at a really exceptional price. Sat. has the best special with Thee Hipster-goat cheese and red peppers yum! Restrooms are clean and they are open late. My major issue is with them running out of the special late at night, which can be a real downer. Ok staff and music.

I just moved down to Florida and I cannot express how many times I have craved Santullos pizza and salads. When I lived in WP, we would hit this place up almost every other day. I also liked that they had pbr on tap.

  • Joe W.

I've been here twice, both times having mediocre pizza. The first had an unruly hipster serve us, and the next I was too drunk to care who helped us and had a blast ordering. Sober and even drunk the pizza didn't blow me away (and that's hard to do). It's cheap pizza, sure, but with Piece on the same block, it's hard to say it's too good in comparison.

    (2)
  • Katie H.

Eurgh. No matter how drunk I am, I still never want to see my reflection in the food I'm about to eat. Or have to pick it up and drain off the stagnant pools of grease. Nuh uh. New York style pizza has absolutely no place in this town. End of.

  • Mel A.

The first time I had Santullo's Pizza it was because my friend was such a fan she would eat TWO massively large slices of it in one sitting. The pizza honestly made me sick the first time I ate it. Kind of like Papa John's pizza in college (not that it's anything LIKE Papa John's, I just had the same reaction) -- But after eating it a few times after a good hangover, It's grown on me. Their mac & cheese is good too. I didn't want to, but I love you Santullo's.

  • Ken N.

Best straight up NYC pizza around. The sauce is great and the crusty is perfectly thin and chewy. Great place!!!!!

    (5)
  • Jake J.

The pizza was charred on the bottom and tasted like cardboard. Barely any cheese involved. Pepperoni was burnt on the pizza, and the staff not too friendly and gave me the wrong change. Also, half way through our meal some screamo music cam blaring on the radio. I think next time I'll go to CVS and get Jacks frozen pizza.

    (1)
  • Eric J.

I would rate this place zero stars if I could. Possibly the worst pizza I have ever eaten. Absolutely horrible. The staff is dirty, rude, and inattentive. I was there more than once (big mistake), and never had a good experience. One time, the guy flipping the pizzas thought it would be cool to fling the dough into the air and touch the ceiling. He did this a few times and I just ended up leaving. Unless you want to be ignored, enjoy asbestos covered pizza, possibly catch hepatitis, or like talking to rude people, stay away from this place. Go to piece instead.

I grew up in Poughkeepsie on the Metro North line to NYC. Consequently I spent a lot of time in NY. I often introduce Santullo's to my friends who are also from NY originally as New York style pizza. This is to say, if I were living in NY I would probably rank this joint a 2 stars. Since I live in Chicago, where people call cardboard with Katsup and cheap cheese cut into squares (for a round pizza? Did someone back in Chicago history fail high school geometry?) Santullo's is a breath of fresh air. Since I crave NY style pizza, and Santullo's fulfills my need I give it a 5 stars. Still people, turn down the music a bit.

  • Mark B.

LOVE IT! as a chicago native i am always semi-ashamed to say that pizza is one of the only things i DO NOT prefer "chicago style"... santullo's has great brooklyn style pizza and if you make for their happy hour specials their at a very fair price!

    (5)
  • annie r.

ok, those 5 stars are contingent on eating in. dont get santullos to go or delivered. its turns into a hot sloppy floppy greasy mess. and nobody wants greasy, sloppy bacon. momma grape would love this place for eating in. ANYWAYS, the pepperoni slices are so good that i would go so far as to call it my favorite thin crust pizza in the city. delish. and their cream soda is even better. granted, its not really THEIRS, but its a brand i've never seen anywhere else, so i'll give them credit.

It's hard for a Chicago kid to admit he likes a New York style pizza. I really like the pizza here. Now, I've only tried 2 items here so base my review on that. Last week after an art show, my wife and I stopped by for a couple of HUGE slices of pizza. My wife ordered a chopped chicken salad which was enormous as well so she left me to eat the second slice of pizza. If you've ever eaten a NY slice before, you know they are big and require folding. They also are very greasy and this fact always turned me off. Santullos is far from greasy. A slice is $3.50 and a large soft drink is $1.50 with free refills (share it as long as you eat in). They have the standard toppings and you can always add to create your perfect slice. Mind you some places will not do that and that is my sign not to come back to a joint. My wife's salad was another shocker as well. The produce used was incredibly fresh and tasty and they weren't cheap with the chicken either. It was tossed in a tasty vinagrette dressing. I've read that their sandwiches are awesome as well and can't wait to try one. There is no waiter service here. You order at the counter and when it's ready they call out your order and you pick it up at the counter as well. There were only 3 people working on a Saturday night and it ran like a well oiled machine. I'm looking forward to my next visit.

I don't think that there's a whole lot of "service" to go wrong when all you're doing is taking my order and my money from behind a counter. I really don't care if you engage me in conversation, tell me "what's good here," or attempt to get on a first name basis with me. Just don't ignore me, take my order, and let's get on with things. So in that regard, the service was just fine. The food was alright, but mainly forgettable. I know this joint's famous for their pizza and not much else, but my two terrible experiences with Pizza Metro had me pizza'd the hell out, so I went with spaghetti and meatballs. The menu said that the "spaghetti" and meatballs was actually meatballs in marinara served on angel hair, which would have been just fine with me, because I personally think that the angel hair is a far superior noodle. I mean, really, you don't get a name like "angel hair" without being pretty spectacular in the noodle category. If you had your choice of say, hanging out with the girl from Myspace named "Angel Hair" or the girl from Myspace named "Spaghetti" then you'd choose "Angel Hair," you know you would. So, to my dismay (actually, there was no dismay, just mild annoyance) my meatballs in marinara arrived on a bed of, you guessed it, spaghetti. Fuck a duck. So the sauce was decent but basic, same goes for the meatballs, and the spaghetti was, well, it was spaghetti. The garlic bread was very tasty though, and the girl said she enjoyed her mozzarella sandwich. Also, the place was pretty much deserted, so finding a table and having a leisurely lunch wasn't difficult. Well, except for the 80s hardcore music blaring over the PA, and the occasional "ping-dong!" noise that preceded a song, declaring that the tattooed hipsters behind the counter were using their laptop as a stereo. Luckily I kind of dig 80s hardcore music, so it wasn't bugging me too bad. Next time I'm down there and in the mood for it, I'll give their pizza a try. I'm actually a fan of the NY style thin and greasy pie, and it's one of the few places I've seen so far that seems to do it right, at least aesthetically. But for now, I have to go on the meatballs, and spaghetti, even if it's made by your grandmother Ruggerio, isn't worth more than three stars.

i'm hearing a lot of noise from a lot of haters on this place. santullo's is awesome; if you are tired of "angry dude" music, go back to naperville or lincoln park, where you can listen to jack johnson until your cold-ass heart's content. speaking of music, this place has the sweetest music ever. i have heard 7 seconds, sham 69, and the bollweevils, as well as stuff like the copyrights and the chinese telephones. like i said, go back to naperville if you don't like it. i have noticed recently that everyone from every punk band in chicago works here. the goat cheese and roasted red pepper pizza is absolutely sublime. plus they have goose island!

  • Melissa H.

YUMMY! I love me some Santullo's pizza! Its the only NY style pizza place I have been too, but that is totally fine by me because it is that damn good! I never thought I could get so excited over pizza, but I wish I could have it a lot more often than I do. The slices are enormous and thin...maybe just a tad too thin. NY pizza is just a little bit thicker. You gotta stop in and try a slice when your in Wicker Park.

    (4)
  • Andy M.

The counter girls here wear threadbare vintage t-shirts and forearm tattoos. The counter guys don the same with a bonus beard for additional indie cred. They're mostly jerks, but that doesn't stop them from making quality tater salad and a delectable roast beef sandwich (with roasted red peppers and horseradish sauce). There was one counter girl with great tats who was very sweet, but I think she's moved on. She's probably a school teacher now- or an events coordinator. The pizza is solid. It's thin, so you can fold it into a paper bird if it pleases you. I enjoy the little granules on the bottom that get stuck in your teeth. You normally don't feel pressured to free up a table there. I used to plop down with a Reader on Tuesday afternoon and read it until the cheap ink in the "I Saw You" section rubbed off on my fingers.

  • Tiff B.

After going to this place a few times, I've decided that the pizza just isn't good. There are so many other restaurants with much better NY style pizza. The pizza at Santullo's is always a greasy mess. But hey it's only like $3 a slice so you kind of get what you pay for.

  • Nicollette W.

We have been desperatly trying to find a good NY style pizza here in Chicago. We have tried a few, but none have been "the one". We ordered a peporoni pizza from this place. I asked for a large and he said it would be $21. - I thought it was a bit much but when I picked up the pizza I figured out why- it was freaking huge! My husband laughed at me when I was walking to the car with it - he said it was as big as me! We got home and dug in - I was glad to see it was sliced normally, not in squares. It was good - I just wish the crust wasn't so thin. It was like paper towel thin. Also, because it was so thin it had a few burnt spots at the bottom that kinda screwed up the taste. I don't know if we'll take out at this place again, maybe if we walk by and are hungry we'll stop in for a slice.

    (3)
  • Rick C.

Yes it is overpriced. But where else in the area can you get decent pizza by the slice? I feel this is a great effort for a Chicago establishment to do NYC style pizza. The area does lack quick spots to grab a quick bite and continue on with your adventure. This is why I frequent Santullo's.

    (3)
  • Nana H.

I love their happy hour special- you get a giant slice of chesse, or peperoni, or sausage for only 2 bucks. Their slices are SO GIANT. Their daily specials are what makes it actually really going! I dont ever go for their regular slices. I love their great white pizza, and their spinach. The staff is nice, the service is fast. I saw two cops get some really giant salads that looked really good. I also like the fact that you can get beer here, so its almost sorta perfect for an after work snack.... And dont forget they are open until like 4am! UGHHH you know your stomach wants a grease bombbb

There is no reason for you Chicagoans to get up on your pizza high horse. I know you have more pizza places than Brittney Spears has crazy, but don't take the delicious Santullo's pizza for granted just because you want to believe you've got better options. Try leaving Chicago and moving to a city practically devoid of a good slice of pizza and you'll realize what a good thing you had going with Mr. Santullo. Some nights I wake up in a cold sweat fiending for a sweet, sweet slice of Santullo's pizza. But alas, mine is a love unrequited; Kate doesn't live there anymore.

The pizza is good but the staff is terrible, your working at a pizza place at 2am I get that your life is not as good as you would like but you don't have to be pr%ck to everyone who comes in.

God damn, I love Santullos. It's the only place that comes to mind when I want a good, big, slice. The slices are on the thin side, but that's how I like them. The tunes are better than any other pizza joint I've ever been to.

goat cheese and roasted red pepper pizza. (read PERIOD) sandwiches are great too! Open late, delivers all the way to Kedzie (not late), happy hour special $2 slices weekdays 4-6, tasty daily pizza specials, great bottled beverage selection with cream soda;), awesome desserts and beer on tap, what else do you want?

This is a place I want to like but can't get into because they make a good chicken pesto sandwich on whole wheat with spicy mayo. But the hipster attitude is glaringly obvious here by the oh so hip staff. Out of the 3 or 4 times I've been there not a single employee has said a single word outside of "what would you like" -or- $10.50 -or- Number 23. They won't be getting my business anytime soon.

Got a slice of the BBQ chix pizza here last night. They also offer huge portions frosty mugs of beer and its cheap. I got a big beer and a huge peice of pizza for under 8 bucks. Santullo's I luh you!

OMG, the best pizza in the city, without a doubt. I feel honored that I am able to eat lunch there a few times a week. There is a pizza god that works there during the day and he puts some serious masterpieces together for us. Oh yeah, you can't go wrong with the spicy sando either.

what a bunch of hipster douchebags. I could ignore their chain wallets and ironic moustaches if the pizza was relatively good. But, New York-style really means limp, oily sandpaper.

Man, I just love pizza. I don't cake if it's east coast, west coast or Chicago style. But the NY style with the over-sized pie slices, San Tullos is amazing. They're tomato sauce is tasty with a touch of zing and they're delivery service is spot on. They sometimes can put you on hold for a couple of moments longer than other places - but let's hope it's because they are that busy! If you live in Wicker Park - Bucktown, this is your pizza place. And yeah, they have other things like salads and stuff, it's middle of the road, nothing you can't make at home.

I used to love Santullos and their NY slices. But, this place has really gone down. The last time I came in, the place was quite dirty. We waited for our slices, even though the place had only a few customers (one thing that has always bothered me about this place is the slack service). When my slices came up, they were terribly overcooked -- dry as shoe soles. I could not eat it. Santullos -- you need to think about where you are going. There are several brick-oven pizza restaurants opening, so you are no longer the only game in town. Get your act together and I'll come back.

Totally underrated pizza place. It might not be the most authentic NY style but it's certainly delicious. It's a great counterpoint to Piece since it's right next door and you can quickly get a slice or two almost right away. Their sandwiches are also really tasty. Who wants to wait an hour and a half at Piece when you can get an equally if not better pizza pronto. Also, their pizza specials are great combos.

Whenever I go to Wicker Park , I usually stop here for lunch. Most of the time it's for their N.Y. style pizza, which, by the way, is awesome. My second choice would have to be the Honey Ham and Cheese followed closely by the Chicken Vesuvio. Their potato salad is also really good. The place itself has a nice, worn urban feel to it which I really dig.

One of the only places in chicago to get a decent slice of pizza... like real actual pizza not deep dish bullshit.

Decent pizza. Rude/incompetent staff doesn't make up for the food. After yet another Santullo's fuck-up this past weekend, I don't think I'll be ordering from them again. I'll just start picking up my pizza from Piece.

we ended up at santullo's on a little excursion after having a few drinks the other night. i've actually been there once before, and had a meatball sub, which was very good, but this time my girlfriend and i decided to try the ny style pizza. we shared a slice because they're absolutely enormous. as in, imagine enormous, and then imagine bigger than that. i think they're big even for ny slices. which is perfect, of course, if you're really really hungry, or if, like us, the point is based on a new culinary experience and not on necessarily on hunger, and you want to split a slice. i don't remember the service being particularly awful the first time i was there, and the second time it was acceptable bordering on annoying. i think if we were really hungry, we may have been annoyed. instead of helping us, the guys behind the counter made a pizza first and did various things -- it was cool to watch them fling the pizzas in the air, but pretty unnecessary as well. we got the pepperoni and sausage slice (you may as well go all out at that point, eh?). the pizza maker guy did offer to cut it in half for us, but we opted out, feeling particularly feisty. the pizza was very good, and nice and thiny and gooey in the ny tradition. i agree that the pizza was a little salty, my gf noticed it first -- i had thought it was all that pepperoni and sausage. anyway, it was exactly what we were looking for. we even rocked out a bit to the ridiculous metal they were playing (at one point, it sounded very much like guns 'n roses). if you're looking for good munchie food after a few drinks, this is a good place to try. however if you expect a wholesome experience or really attentive service -- go to piece (whom i think has far superior pizza anyway). still santullo's is definitely worth trying.

I love Santullo's. I started to go there when I lived in Humboldt Park but have continued to go there now that I live over in Portage Park. The Spinach Salad is AMAZING (baby spinach, bacon, sundried tomatoes, goat cheese, walnuts and balsamic vinaigrette). The pizza might not be "true NY Style"-I don't really know...but whatever it is, it is thin and tasty. Their tiramisu is great, I had the most amazing cream of artichoke soup there, and I've never had a *bad* experience there. True, sometimes the employees are less than enthusiastic, but I've never thought it was more than hipster arrogance so typical of Wicker Park.

This place is a pathetic excuse for a New York-style pizzeria. The crust is limp, the cheese flavorless, and the prices outrageously high compared to what you'd pay for an excellent slice in NYC. They should really be embarrassed. As for the sandwiches, they're okay at best...the bread is spongy, which is really disappointing. It's like they're not even trying.

I love this place. The pizza slices are huge and thin and wonderful. During happy hour you get it for 2 bucks amazing. Good alternative to hard attack thick Chicago style pizza.

Fantastic New York style pizza. If you're aching for some Greenwich village goodness, this is where it's at. The staff is pretty much as hip and surly as in NYC, but the place is unnaturally clean (for a ratty pizza joint)

  • Rahsaan A.

Love it. The pizza is awesome. New York style is refreshing once in a while. The sandwiches are pretty good too. My usual meal from Santullo's is the tuna sandwich, potato salad, and an orange cream soda. Make sure to try the potato salad, I seriously think they make the best that I've tried so far.

hands down the best pizza i've ever had......2 slices of pepperoni....red pepper flakes....a dash of oregano......DO NOT dab the grease off...fold....take a bite......almost as good as sex when the grease drips off yur slice and runs down your arm......ok maybe the sex I'VE had hasnt been THAT great....hmmmm... but Santullo's Pizza is.....grab a bottle of Sprechters Ginger Ale and im in Wicker Park Heaven....... is that a possible place?

The pizza can be a little hit or miss if you're ordering by the slice; I suggest taking a look to see what's available and how fresh it looks before deciding what you want. The pizza is left out on the counter until you order a slice, ergo it may be less than fresh, but they put it in the oven for a couple of minutes to warm it up. I've tried a few of their sandwiches, which were all outstanding. They use fresh baguette-type bread and use good ingredients. The chicken pesto sandwich was a favorite of mine. If you get the chips, they have Zapp's potato chips available as a side. This is a somewhat small local chip maker based in between New Orleans and Baton Rouge, so imagine my surprise at seeing them in Wicker Park. All the varieties are good; try the Cajun Crawtators for something unique- it's basically a mix of spices blended with seafood seasoning. These are thick-cut kettle chips with a lot of flavor that go along great with their sandwiches. No doubt about it, the hipster attitude is kickin' with some of the people that work there, but anyone used to shopping or eating in Wicker Park won't be surprised by that.

If you want NY style pizza in Chicago, no need to go anywhere else. The slices are large, foldable, slightly greasy (dab with a napkin dear if you are worried about this), very cheesy, and yummy! This is not Piece so be prepared to stand at a counter, order, stand some more, pay, find a seat, wait, go back up and get it (depending on how busy they are), then back to your seat to enjoy. Tiny wine and beer selection and no one working there is going to tell you to "Have a nice day!" but who cares? Get your pizza on then roll elsewhere for adult beverages and a friendly dose of customer service.

Even though I walk past this place all the time, I've never eaten there before. I don't like any other pizza places in the neighborhood. This place is fantastic, and delivered in under an hour. I would recommend eating or getting delivery. Way better than Pizza Metro.

I went to this place after the wicker park fest one year and was unimpressed. It was the saltiest pizza I've ever tasted and it was much too greasy. I love salty and greasy foods but they went overboard. Much too expensive given the quality of their food. I guess it's ok for a ny style place, if that's what's your looking for in chicago........

  • Jen C.

I love Santullo's pizza. It's especially perfect after the bars - pizza by the slice. And the slices are a really good deal from 4pm-6pm (not sure if this is a daily thing). However, it's only a few doors down from Piece pizza - my absolute favorite place - so Santullo's usually loses out unless it's after a night out.

Was looking for a real slice of New York pizza. Encouraged by article in Sun Times Weekender, came by on Sunday. As a former New Yorker, I truly miss NY pizza. This is a weak imitation. Too dry, crust hard rather than chewy. My slice of sausage pizza had a microscopic bit of sausage on it, though the cheese was adequate. Service, as such, was poor. Was told they did not have enough employees to bus the tables, which were covered in crumbs and dribblings. Overall, a big disappointment.

My wife and I have been hellbent on finding a decent slice of New York pizza here in Chicago; since we originally hail from that northeastern state, we don't look kindly upon what passes for "pizza" here. ;-) Based on some recommendations online, we descended upon Santullo's; while not perfect, it's the closest we've come yet to satisfying us. The cheese and sauce were largely done right; our crust was a bit too thin and soggy. The prices are a tad high -- $3.25 for a slice would be considered a rip-off in New York -- but they don't have much in the way of competition for non-Chicago-style pizza, and they probably know it.

    (3)
  • Amanda B.

I do get a slice here once in a while, but I think that it's a little over rated. It's ok. If i want a big piece of greasy something, I get a cheese slice.

  • Kaycee M.

Not only is the pizza good and cheap- the staff is always courteous, even when people (like me) roll in completely annihilated. I always felt a bit more together after a massive slice of greasy pizza and a cup of fountain pop.

  • Alec E.

Yes there is a lot that could be better about this place. But they have the best deal going for a nice relaxing cheap lunch in Chicago. under $6 = A slice with any two toppings (not counting pepperoni or sausage which are free) and a pop w/free refills. I have stopped coming here as often as I used too but I imagine that will pick up again with the summer time. I'd definitely come here more often for dinners if they would stop leaving the orders in the Oven! They need to teach the noobie people there to stop trying to rush when the place picks up.. stay calm! WARNING: Don't park on North Ave from 4-6!

this is a cool place. the first thing you notice is the loud metal music. the slices of pizza are huge. they have beer but a small selection. a picture of bud light is 9 bucks. and a picture of anything elecs is 14. so if you looking for decent pizza i would check the plaice out

My wife and I were craving some NY style pizza so we gave Santullo's a try. The pizza was delicious, the staff was friendly, and they had my order ready in the time they said. What more could I ask? This was definitely among the best NY style I've had in Chicago.

Santullo's offers a nice selection of sandwiches and pizza slices. The sandwiches are served toasted and feature a good combination of ingredients. This place is open late, so it's a good place to drop in if you're out on the town and you need to re-fuel.

This is a "pizza-by-the-slice" eatery that is convenient to the Bucktown crowd. I have had their pizza two times now and have decided it is just ok. The slices are huge--NY style with a pretty good crust. However, I always feel that it is too salty and I would just go down the street to Piece.

    (2)

so i ordered santullo's because jillian told me to. i ordered online, which is a nice feature. after an hour and a half, i called them to make sure my order was received properly. the guy who answered the phone was a bit disgruntled and obviously in a pickle himself. apparently, the manager just went into the hospital for some reason and they were maybe going to close and they were going to be unable to deliver my pizza. egads! i was hungry, so i offered to come in and pick it up. 15 minutes he said. when i got there the big cheese manager type guy was there. he apologized profusely and comped my pizza. then he gave me a huge box. the pizza is especially thin, spiced perfectly, and has a delicious sweet sauce, not too much cheese or sauce, just the perfect ratio. this is the best east coast style pizza i have had in chicago. i will order again.

I'm glad to see another Jersey girl who loves Santullo's like i do! I swear, no one from around here appreciates it like us east coasters. I'm all for deep dish, but NY style will always reign supreme for me. Big floppy slices dripping with that perfect bright orange oil-- it's a good thing, trust me. I do find the pizza a bit salty, but the crust, the cheese-- everything else makes up for it. My one complaint has to do with toppings. . . I usually go for plain, so i can revel in the delicious simplicity of the pie (and yes, we call it a ''pie"), but occasionally when buying just a slice i'll go for some peppers or olives, which usually seem to be just tossed on top and cooked for a few seconds, resulting in a cascade of vegetables falling onto the plate. The sandwiches are also really good, the salads are just okay, and the soda machine always seems to be a bit too watery, but the pizza. . . oh the pizza!

  • jim b.

The thing is, I work in the service industry. I work in the neighborhood, even. So I hate to complain about a place that I have frequented often. The manager is awesome, and the pizza has always treated me well. But the other day I went in there and purchased one slice of pizza and a small pasta salad from a tired, frustrated looking girl that works there. I just asked for it bagged up to go. Apparantly that merited her adding on an additional 2.50 to the tip portion of my charge slip without my permission. Normally, if I had any money at all (and didn't have to charge for my one meal of the day) it wouldn't bother me. But that is shady and pretty sad. Keep an eye out for that!

Definitely a fan of their pies and slices! Been going there regularly since returning to Chicago last year. LOVE the crust, sauce and cheese.. and the mac n cheese is pretty good (a little less cheese sauce... would make it perfect, but the flavor is on point!) ... will let you know about the sandwiches! The slices are big, however, I always buy two for myself... Overall, one of my favorite pizza spots!!!

  • Tracy K.

Lovely, foldable slices of margherita pizza (Thursday special) for $4? I was satisfied and did not feel like I was being ripped off; it was enough food to fill me up & it was tasty to boot. I had a bite of the boyfriend's mac & cheese, which funnily enough, did not appear to contain cheese. The place was pretty clean for an establishment where you bus your own table, and the women's bathroom was very clean. Maybe that had something to do with the creepy sign they have up telling you to think twice before you tag the bathroom as they are watching you. Oh, and ordering a beer takes your mind off the negligible wait for your slice.

Fan-f*cking-tastic pizza by the slice. Hate to say it, but who the hell wants to eat Chicago style pizza regularly? Some of the best NYC style slices around.

  • Bridget S.

I'm from St. Louis and because of this, I enjoy a thin slice of pizza. When I moved to Chicago I thought the whole deep dish/stuffed pizza thing was very novel, but when it comes down to it, I'll take the thin stuff. That said, I dig the super thin, floppy, giant NY-style slices at Santullo's. It's not the cleanest place (there's often crumbs/Parmesan/napkins laying around - no biggie, I'll wipe it off. I'm no priss) and the service is a bit bi-polar -one day they're jovial and having a good time, the next they give you a death glare because you asked them to make you a sandwich. But so what?! You deal with the workers for about 2 minutes and then you walk over (or out) and eat a fucking stellar slice of pizza. And finally - gotta love the "Happy Hour" - $2 slices from 4-6PM M-F. Fuck to the yeah.

  • Gamaliel E.

One of my favorite drunken stops in the wicker park area. Fast, cheap, and tasty. Thin crispy crust, with a tasty sauce. Another plus is that it is well lit. It'll help prevent you from taking that ugly person home you picked up from that very dark bar.

different than piece pizza, but better in my opinion. its more of a quick bite to eat place than a sit down like piece, but overall the pizza is better.

  • Sharlene K.

Ugh.... why the hell are their slices always so soggy? This is not NYC style pizza by a longshot. Yeah, large triangular thin crust slices? Yeah, ever hear of the entire East Coast? Seriously, who came from East Rutherford, NJ and thought up their NYC claim and got away with it? Newsflash kids, Jersey City still doesn't count as NYC. Slices this large are local to the Jersey shore. Salt doesn't make up for basil, marjoram, oregano, parsley, and thyme in a sauce and I suggest using those herbs once in a while. I also suggest reducing your sauce before you put it on your pizza. I also suggest bumping up your oven temperature so you can actually dry your pizza and cook it per the style of edible East Coast pizza. I can't even believe people would suggest this is the best NY pizza in Chicago. This is the most mediocre and wettest NJ style pizza I've ever had. The crust wouldn't be so bad if the tip of the slice didn't feel like someone dunked it into greasy water. For the love of anyone, don't order pepperoni. On a sidenote, it's really fucking annoying when kids who obviously have never been to NYC try to adopt an "accent" in their writing reviews. You guys realize that NYers don't actually talk like mob movies right? It's like that Domino's commercial that makes you sound like idiots. And please realize you can ask most pizza places to cut your pizza into triangles. It's true, asking someone to cut your pizza into triangles doesn't magically transform it into NY-style anything though it seems people insist a triangular shape affects taste. If squares bother you that much (and they bother me for folding purposes), ask that person on the other end of the phone taking your order to have the pizza cut into triangles. Strange but effective strategy for triangular pizza anywhere in Chicago. The triangles do not make this place unique, special, magically enhance the flavor, or enhance the folding experience as the slices are soggy and collapse. I almost want to post a photo of an actual slice of pizza from NY for comparison. And fuck Ray's, this place is no St. Mark's Pizza or Lombardi's or some other place that doesn't resemble NJ.

Although I'm not a teacher, this is how your report card looks like. Pizza: C Totally not transportable since by the time I got to where I wanted to eat it - like 5 minutes later, all the cheese stuck to the top of the paper plate. Sandwich: B+ Tasty and fresh Homeade bread pudding: A+/advancing you up to the next grade Amazing. Completely addicting. I need to figure out how to make this to cure my cravings when I'm home.

NY Style pizza for late night drunken munchies. This place is aok, but I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here during normal hours (aka sober) But it satisfied my need for grease, cheese and bread late night and it didn't make me sick. I'm pretty sure I enjoyed the meal. ok by me.

Slightly overpriced, but the delivery was quick... the pizza was pipin' hot. I ordered the Spinach to Finish and really enjoyed it. I love that it's thin crust and I love how massive the pieces are. And, I actually prefer the dough to other pizza places in the area. I can't comment on the actual environment, but they were great for delivery.

  • Christine P.

Just went to Santullo's to meet a friend and catch up. HUGE slices of NY style pizza. I had the cheese, which I must admit was a little on the bland side, but nothing a little sprinkle of red pepper flakes couldn't cure. The spinach salad was quite tasty with walnuts and roasted peppers. I will definitely go back, because I do like being able to go to a place and just get a slice, fold it up and enjoy. Plus, I found the crust to be light and crispy, with a hint of chew. Me likey.

Decided to drop in with my friend after reading all the wonderful reviews. I'd first like to start off saying the happy hour prices are pretty cheap considering the large portions of the pizza slices so thats a plus. The pizza was nice, fresh, and crisp but not amazing. I've had better. But try it:)

Not my first choice, not my last choice. All I can say about my last visit to Santullo's is YIKES. In a nutshell, the pizza slaves were ignoring me, the cashier was ignoring the SHIT out of me and was too busy pouring a bottle of rootbeer into a mug. No one waited on me so we bailed and went to Village Pizzeria. Shame on you for treating me like my business doesn't matter. SHAME SHAME. If I had to sum up my overall opinion of Santullo's in one word besides "yikes" it would be greeze. Because their pizza is greezy and sloppy. The only thing that I like about Santullo's is the one cashier who looks like he's related to Santino from Project Runway. He's a sweetheart and a huge flirt. Which, you know, is welcomed because fall has been a kind a slow season for me. I ended up here after an evening of heavy drinking with my two best gays who are vegetarians. We ended up with an extra slice of pep and they went wild on it. Apparently, they're the types of vegetarians who only eat meat when they want to. So, yeah, if parking, service and nutrition aren't factors in your pizza decision making, you'll probably enjoy going here. But, let me remind you that Piece is just a few doors down.

My favorite pizza by the slice restaurant in Chicago. I do not mind the wait or paying more for a whole pizza as there are a lack of options for NY style pizza in Chicago. Given how expensive a whole pizza is and the lack of options, the delivery fee does not justify regular patronage. Shame its not closer to me because every now and then a slice or two is what I crave.

If you are looking for a huge slice of greasy pizza after a night at the bars, you have now found your spot. They serve pizza by the slice, or by the pie (only extra large). The pizza is awesome and they come up with some crazy toppings which they rotate throughout the week, homemade meatballs anyone? The subs are okay, but take forever. The good news is that they serve beer while you wait. My only problem with the place is that I don't think I have ever been helped in under 5 minutes. It's not like they have a line out the door, they just don't have anyone acknowledging your presence until they feel like looking up from making the pies. All in all, the food is good and they have a perfect location for a late night slice. Enjoy!

I've loved Santullo's every time I've been, and even when it was ordered in, it was still freaking delicious. I guess when I'm on a mission for pizza, the crabbiest staff mean nothing to me. But every time I've been, I've never been treated bad. The only downfall is that even when they warm up the pizza, sometimes it's just not HOT enough. Likewise, seating is limited and you pretty much have to stalk a table and ... well ... this one time we even had a guy sit down at the table as we finished up. I mean, the two guys at my table invited him, so he and his buddies could have the table. But it was sort of pushy weird.

This is the place to go when: -Piece is too crowded and you just NEED some pizza. -you want a yummy toasted sandwhich and want to support a local business intead of going to Potbelly's. -you are just looking for just a slice or two of pizza

The last time I was in Santullo's the girl at the front counter was so unnecessarily rude that my b.f. and I actually started laughing, like, is this chick for real? Sadly, she was in fact for real. Real, real pissed at life. It's not even like it was slightly crowded in there either. There was practically no one else inside at around 10 PM on a Saturday night. They were also playing terrible music so loudly that we could barely hear each other. We ate our food, which was only ok, and immediately split. I will not be hurrying back here anytime soon.

wow. i've been really homesick for nyc pizza since moving here 8 months ago. i have actually thoguth about moving to wicker park just so i could walk here and get a slice to go. it's the best new york slice i've had in chicago! the staff not so nice but what do you expect. it's nyc service in chicago i guess. i can't be mad at them. i can't wait to go back!

I come here for a cheap pizza lunch about two or three times a week and they never fail me. Their sausage pizza is forgettable but their daily specials are all good. The best ones are probably the bbq chicken and the great white which is loaded with chunks of garlic. My favorite part is the last few bites near the crust. Its got that nice chewy texture with a crispy outside. The music is pretty loud and can range anywhere from Morrissey to Sepultura and the staff is usually pretty tepid.

Thank you Santullo's, while not as good as pizza from New York, you have reminded me how much most pizza places in Chicago suck. I have gone on too long eating crappy thin crust in Chicago, and even fooled myself into thinking some of them were half way decent (Bacci I'm looking at you). Sure, there are some good places like Follia and Coalfire, but they are gourmet pizza's that never really satisfied my cravings for real New York style. I only wish I had found you sooner. Note: yes Chicago pizza sucks, deep dish is horrible, and chicago style thin crust is for the most part just bad. Plus why the hell do Chicago pizzerias cut their pizza's into little squares? What dumbass came up with that idea and how did it spread everywhere?

  • Allison V.

This is a favorite. If you are looking for a great slice, Santullo's is the place to go. Big slices of pizza (cheese, pepperoni, or sausage, plus the slice of the day). Awesome price! Sprecher gourmet sodas in the cooler. Fast and friendly service. I am never disappointed when I go here.

YES - finally found a place near me that can serve NYC style pizza slices. Nice work fellas. Only hitch is that I ordered my pizza to go and you messed up the first one you tried to make so I was stuck waiting in the place for about 15 minutes after I arrived. Not ideal but at least you were nice about it and apologized. I recommend going with the pepperoni or cheese...

Get the Brickhouse Pizza. A little pricey for a thin crust NY style pizza, but worth it. Also grab some Chicken Vesuvio sandwiches. They are excellent and save very well for a few days in the fridge. This place and Bella Notte are our Italian staples in Chicago. Try both.

  • Tim S.

I moved to Chicago from NYC and spent nearly a year trying to find pizza that came even close to resembling a New York slice ... after dozens of disappointing pies, I finally stumbled upon Santullo's and I'm now a happy & well-fed transplant. If you want a "real" slice, go to Santullo's. Pros: Big Slices, Thin Crust, Decent Prices, Nice Staff. Cons: Busy Saturday Nights = Pizza Not As Good P.S. Try the Creme Brulee Cheesecake

You have been there for me when the assholes at Piece told me to wait two hours because they had a hipster-runway-karaoke-bachelorette-bingo party and couldn't accomodate anymore people. Your pizza is so sloppy and when you fold the slices grease peaks out from the top as if to say "hello and welcome home."

The other night, we mistakenly thought we could pop into Piece at 7:45pm ... averse to the hour-long wait we were quoted there, we nipped over a few doors to Santullo's. It was perfect for the following reasons: - Fast. Order at the counter, they whip it up for you, and holler when it's ready. - Inexpensive. A slice, a salad and a beer ran me about $12 including tax. - Tasty. I love NY style pizza, and this was great. Also they have interesting daily slices. I am also glad to see a house salad that has mixed greens instead of iceberg. AND the draft beer comes in frosty mugs. - Low key. The service was pleasant, though not excessively friendly -- which was fine with me; we just grabbed a booth. And, a table of cops came in for their break, which I think is probably a ringing endorsement ... after all, how much 'fast' food do you think they have sampled? It is not fancy or big; if you don't like counter service, or you want something a bit nicer than booths, forget it. It reminds me of the pizza joint I worked at in college; maybe that's a recommendation for you, and maybe it is the opposite. I will say we cleared our own table, but we were in a hurry. I'm rounding up my 3.5 stars assuming I will feel four star after a more extensive sampling of the menu, as well as after the delivery order i plan on submitting soon - but I really like it a lot.

I had a slice of cheese pizza and a root beer here for dinner. It was on a Sunday, and it was pretty quiet and slow. The slice came out hot, and I guess it was decent for being $3.50. It wasn't amazing and life-changing, so that was a bummer. The root beer, on the other hand, was one of the best I've ever had. Of course, I can't really judge this place solely based on how amazing the bottled root beer was... But the pizza was good, and maybe next time I'll order a large pie when I can actually afford to eat it ($28 for a standard large NY-style pizza).

I am from NYC and NNJ and have East Coast pizza cravings regularly. I really like Santullo's pizza. Be sure to order your pie well done! "Pizza is a lot like sex. When it's good, it's really good. When it's bad, it's still pretty good."

For late night pizza in a pinch or a quick bite after work, Santullo's is the place to go. I'm not gonna argue over whether it is a true NY style pizza. I don't care because it tastes so damn good. Here's what I know this pizza to be: a gooey, greasy, thin-crusted pizza that melts in your mouth. I can't say that I've ever been treated poorly by the staff here, so I'm not sure what that's all about. If anything, I'd say they may be slightly aloof, not rude, but that's just because I'm pretty sure they're high as a kite. In a nutshell, Santullo's is cheap, delicious, and easy. Just like me. Ever since we arrived in town, my wife has been looking for decent New York pizza. I saw this place in the Trib and thought it would be worth a shot. So on the Blue Line we hopped, and out we went. The pizza's big, floppy, and oily, just like it should be. Downright affordable, too. We shall return.

Well at least it started off well enough. Nice friendly greeting, usually a good sign. Picked out a couple of slices, these were to go. I told him he could use paper plates, with foil on top. He very accommodatingly told me he put it in a box. Apparently this is were it went down hill. However the box was handed over the glass, the pizza slices slid and because they were hot, the larger end of the slice decimated the bottom half of the slice. I discovered this when I opened it to put spices on top, they have a little island with spices, napkins and stuff on it. When I showed it to the nice friendly greeting guy, not so much friendly anymore. So I just left. They need to get those nice slice shaped boxes like Bacci uses. As far as the New York style angle, "style" is the operative word to pay attention to. Looks like it, big fold over slices, but the taste? Not quite. I'll go back to try some of the sandwiches, per Patrick W's review. Place is within walking distance to home, which I really like.

Tremendous drunk pizza prepared by stoners. Sometimes its a little bit burnt, and it is always greasy, but has never let me down.

THIS IS THE BEST PIZZA IN CHICAGO! For realz, don't even bother going anywhere else. This is as close as you'll get to NY style pizza in Chicago so go enjoy it!

I came here Fri night with some friends after a night of bar-hopping. I have always taken pride in Chicago-style deep dish, but the truth is nowhere in Chicago does good New York-style pizza... except Santullo's! I was expecting the slice of pizza to come out stale and warm, but on the contrary. The pizza was very fresh and burning-your-mouth hot! (SO YUMMY!) The cheese at a good consistency. I find that piece pizza's (which is 2 shops over from Santullo's) cheese slides right off the pizza.. like if i took a bite, the cheese would just slide off hanging at my mouth and the rest of the slice is just eaten plain. However, at Santullo's, the cheese is perfect; not too hard, not too soft. I can't describe it; you must try for yourself!

Santullo's sandwiches are like Potbelly's on steroids. So very good. We stopped by last night for a quick bite to eat. Their menu was pretty daunting, pizza, sandwiches, entrees, beer. It was too much. I ended up ordering a roast beef and horseradish. It was great with carmalized onions and roasted red peppers. But after watching slice after slice of pizza being ordered, I wished I had ordered pizza. The slices are HUGE and so very cheeeezaaaay. Yum. Next time, Santullo's. You, me and the pizza.

I'm always looking for New York style pizza and I have to give it up to their $2 lunch special. Can't beat it cuz it's tasty, filling, and super affordable. Yum Yum...

All you people who like Piece better...GO! I love Santullo's. And I am glad you all hate it. Go some place else! The pizza is way better than any other crappy standard Chicago-pizza joint. Yeah, the waitstaff isn't that friendly...well, maybe you are just expecting too much from someone handing you already prepared, heated up pizza. And yes, the place is a tad dirty. That is part of the charm. Go, and take your smelly children/pets with you... Best NY-style pizza in Chi-town...if that is what you are looking for.

It's a good thing that I don't live any closer to Santullo's, or I would weigh 547 lbs and wear a FFF bra. They even manage to make the soup taste fattening.

Best New York Style Pizza in Chicago. Really. I like thin, thin pizza crusts, paired with a savory array of toppings, and this place simply beats everyone else. Also lots of cute guys work there, and though some of their yuppie-induced irritation is apparent in an imminent surliness sometimes, everyone is generally nice enough. Also the creme brulee cheesecake is fantastic. Even Rasputin the cat liked it, which I think, speaks volumes.

If you find yourself drunk and in Wicker Park/Bucktown at 2 am, then Santullo's is your joint. Supersized pieces of pizza, covered in enough grease to lubricate all the hinges in your home. Hey - I am not complaining. There's something about the way grease and copious amounts of booze mix that makes hangovers seem not so bad. So why the three stars? When you're sober and just looking for a bite, the grease becomes your enemy. No booze to mix with. Just bile. And it ain't pretty.

Gotta love a place that will make a sandwich exactly how you tell them to make it. The chips are good and the sandwiches yummy! Great spot for lunch in Wicker Park

to me, santullo's is the kind of place that you don't want to know what goes on in the kitchen, but the sandwiches are huge and delicious and the ny style pizza is really tasty. just watch out for the grease! it's a little bizarre when you go in and they're playing death metal, but i guess it sort of adds to the charm??

  • Raj B.

They stop making sandwiches randomly at early times during the night. Sometimes we'd get there at 9 when they close at 11, and theyd have the sandwich bar open. Another night we'd get there at 9 again and they would say they're done making sandwiches. The pizza was not always fresh...it felt like it was sitting there for a long time. We had a BuyWithMe punch card and sometimes I'd get charged tax and other times I wouldn't. for $5-$7 there are wayyy better places to get a slice of pizza or a sandwich.

The only reason I went here was because Piece had an hour and half wait and I was with two teenage girls. I'm so glad to live in Chicago because I did not care for that thin crust flavorless pizza. I did the fold in half and also after sprinkling every topping they offered on the pizza it still didn't help. They did have some yummy sodas and their staff was very nice but I should have just waited the hour and a half.

  • Ms. R.

I'd give this place a 3.5. Reminds me of the NY/NJ pizza places where you can grab a slice and go. Not enough of these places here in Chicago. The slices are huge and the taste ok - sometimes they are a bit too salty. But love the fact that if you want a slice you can go there and grab one or two.

    (3)
  • Jeff B.

In a city filled with way too much deep dish, Santullo's is by far the best thin crust pizza I've had in Chicago. Simply delicious. The staff isn't the friendliest, but who cares? It's pizza.

(For this review the role of Pizza will be played by Large Pool of Grease) I was at Santullo's once and that's all it took for me to say that I will never be going back again. The staff was a bunch of rude hipsters, the atmosphere felt like I was stuffed inside a 234 year old rotting couch covered in cat pee and the food left a lot to be desired. Thank you and goodnight.

Santullo's is perfect for what it is. The staff is always friendly and the food is always consistent. You cant get a much better deal than 2 dollar slices m-f or pizza anywhere at 2am on the weekend. I actually feel bad for the staff there as they have to deal with annoying, yuppie, weekend warriors that invade Wicker Park on the weekends cause its the "edgy" place to be. Hell if I had to serve them pizza I'd be annoyed too. If you want your want pizza served with a smile at 2am, find somewhere else. I heart Santullos.

I lived in NYC for five years. This place reminds me of one of the countless Ray's Original (or is it the Original Ray's?) pizza joints in my old neighborhood. It may not be coal oven-fired, but t's a greasy slice of goodness that's cheap, quick, and perfect with beer. The staff is hit or miss, which makes me nostalgic for NYC. But they're not in there to win friends and influence people. And HUGE BONUS POINTS for selling Zapp's potato chips, and especially for selling my favorite flavors. Try the Gator Taters (in the green striped bag), they're dill chips. Or the Craw Taters, (red striped bag) which are reminiscent of the spices in a crawfish boil. It might sound a little much to eat chips with pizza, but these are a real treat.

This place has gone downhill, fast, for me. I used to love Santullo's, but hadn't been there for awhile. Decided to go for lunch today. I ordered my regular "Spicy Chicken Sando" for myself, and a slice of pizza for my daughter. The pizza was dry, overcooked cardboard. If you want pizza, save yourself the misery, and for the same style, Piece, right next door blows this pie away. My sandwich may have been good, but upon taking the 2 pieces apart, I find a little black hair right on the top. I try to ignore it, as I don't like making a scene, and eat the other half. Half way through that one, boom, another disgusting long black hair. I almost puked right there in the booth. I proceed to pickup my tray, throw all my food away, and leave the premise. Needless to say, I will NEVER return.

I prefer Chicago-style pizza over NY-style pizza and I hate metal music................................................nonetheless, I would come back here for a slice any time. They're open for lunch! Great prices, free refills, excellent people watching.........would be awesome as an after-bar stop off for sure. Just easy going, fast, and delicious. Some times there's nothing better than eating off of a paper plate. I like the pineapple pizza which they do well.

I've stopped in Santullo's for a quick bite and ordered delivery. For about $4, you get a pretty big slice of NY style pizza. You order a pizza (one size) and it's about $30. My complaint is service - it is never really very good whether I've been in-person or getting delivery. Placing an order by phone can also be frustrating and I've been put on a long hold numerous times. I've also had delivery take longer than promised. That being said, the pizza itself I like. It is NY style with a thin crust. I like the pizza's crust is slightly crispy but still chewy and soft. There is a nice balance between the sauce and the cheese. I know pizza isn't health food but it is sometimes a bit too greasy (perhaps that is to be desired at 1am).

Santullo's is a New York pizza-styled eatery smack in the middle of Wicker Park. It's a perfect place if you need a quick lunch or you need some substance to guide you through what could be a late night. The pizza is pretty good and was out real quick. I did have some issues when I first walked in and wanting to place my order, but I think it was more of catching the staff at a bad time and definitely not a normal thing. Once I was acknowledged the staff were quick to help.

Was there to grab a salad and beers before to go our in Wicker Park, and it was a huge disappointment. The waiter didn't took our order properly. I ordered a Spinach salad, they served a Caesar salad. At least they called it "Caesar salad"... The plate only contained Romaine lettuce and a few croutons. What happened to the Parmesan? The egg? Honestly, that wasn't a Caesar salad, and it wasn't worth $6.50!

Yeah ok, it's a giant slice of pizza. And it's pretty good. It's a pretty good giant slice of pizza. Did I thoroughly enjoy it? Yes! Would I come back? Probably not? It's hard to articulate why something is both really enjoyable and really mediocre.

Santullo's has always been a "wonk, wonk, wonk" slice to me. It's food to stuff my pie-hole with, to help satiate a quick hunger or help me back to sobriety after drinks in the area. (Although, if someone said let's grab a cab for a slice elsewhere, I'd most likely go elsewhere. I like Chicago style and don't mind the calories.) A decent NY style slice though it's not, is it? I mean NY slices are enormous and oily right? These are hand tossed pie slices with a cut like an NY slice. Flavors are alright, it's better than any fast food pizza joint and they have BEER!

Had the strangest time here today. Came by during work for a quick lunch, and the place was completely empty save for maybe one other customer and two City of Chicago inspectors. Right after my co-workers and I placed our orders, the inspectors shut down the restaurant. It seemed to be only for a few hours or the rest of the day, and I'm not sure if it was because of the building or the kitchen/food. We decided to eat our pizza anyway. I had ordered the Italian Stallion slice, which was supposed to have capicolla, genoa salami, mortadella with provolone cheese, lettuce, tomato, onions, herb mayo and italian dressing. The pizza I got was all cheese with just a few splotches of pesto on top. I asked the person behind the counter if there was supposed to be meat on my slice. He answered, "It's under the cheese." I 100% promise there was no meat on my pizza. I wish I had a picture to prove it. Definitely won't be coming back here. Will go to Piece down the street instead.

Came in here for a quick bite not expecting much, but I actually ended up really liking it! They have HUGE slices of pizza that you can customize, or you can choose from their daily specials. I ordered a sandwich (the vegan Santullo) and it was great, and the person taking my order was friendly. They have a lot of vegan options there, which I definitely didn't expect from a tiny, by the slice pizza place. Unfortunately didn't love the atmosphere in there, the music was really loud and really terrible. Overall though, I would come back here again.

On the recommendation of some friends, we headed to Piece Brewery and Pizzeria, only to find it packed to the gills. Still hankering for pizza and beer, we continued west on North Ave, and were delighted to find what looked to be another option. Oh, how wrong we were. The child at the cash register screwed up as many orders than he got right. Really, I watched him make a total mess of the order of the guy in front of me in line, only to witness him make an entirely new series of mistakes when it came to my order. You've got to hand it to him for creativity and consistency, but unfortunately, not for much else. The beer selection was pitiful. They had four taps, but two were out -- and none of the offerings was very exciting to begin with. And mind you, this was a Saturday night at about 8pm. If you run out of half of your beer selection and both of your 'Pizzas of the Day' by 8pm on a not-very-crowded Saturday night, you're doing something wrong. And then, the pizza itself really wasn't very good. The crust was doughy and boring -- lacking life as well as taste. In another city, this pizza might do. But in Chicago, you're right to have higher standards. No wonder this place was empty when Piece had a line out the door!

Bleh. This is the last time I take advice overheard from a drunk guy at a liquor store. Pizza was mediocre, crust was like cardboard, service sucked (a total of 4 mistakes in our order). At least there was a moderate amount of entertainment from the dough tossing guy. He's really talented.

Worst experience ever!!!! Heard so much about his place from my brothers who have gone several times. Ordered two pepperoni pies and after 45 mins of waiting, asked cashier how much longer. He said 30 more minutes. Apparently these idiots forgot about our table and we're giving away our pizza to every other customer. When "manager" was called upon, not even a sorry or how can I make it better was offered. Just gave me my money back without even looking up at me. So fuck you Santullos!!!!

  • Peter D.

Not great but not bad. For $3.75 you do get a hefty slice. It's a standard, by the slice joint but it looks like they have a solid $7 Revolution draft and slice night. I have tough tastes as far as pizza goes but this is passable. Not a bad quick lunch option if you're in Wicker Park.

  • Maggie I.

Absolutely massive slices of pizza here. I could do without the blaring metal they were playing (my headache wasn't too fond of it either), but I wanted a huge slice of pizza and what I got was the size of a full pizza. I left full and satisfied. I don't know what everyone else's problems were with the service--its a by-the-slice pizza place. I've never been to a by-the-slice pizza place where all of the employees were genuinely excited about working there.

Being raised in Philly, we're right "down da block" from NYC where they make NYC style pizza. Soooo,I was kinda disappointed with the pizza that my wife & I ordered. We had a carmelized onions, mushrooms...HALF sauage...HALF pepperoni... well that's what we ordered BUT we got everything BUT the HALF pepperoni...we got about 6 of 'em...so we were kinda disappointed.... I don't think I will return...All I ask is that you give me what I ask AND PAY for...if that's too much to ask for I can't...or refuse to send ya a text of my order.(smh)...Nope can't do it...

  • Maria C.

I've tried to give this place a chance multiple times but I just HATE the service. Their rude employees should be happy they have a job to pay for their crappy tattoos, I guess their egos hold them back from a simple smile or welcome to a paying customer. Oh and the food, 2/5.

  • Irene H.

The pizza is amazing! Best NY style pizza I've had in a long time, and a giant pepperoni slice was only $3.75. The sandwiches were just ok - the Spicy Chicken Sando was kinda bland, and the Santullo (Italian) was good but nothing special. But the pizza....yum! I would definitely come here over Dimo's or Piece (both a few blocks away). I like the casual atmosphere and that they offer a few beers on tap.

I was just doing what any normal, fellow Yelper would do while visiting Chicago as a tourist at the end of January 2014, during the coldest winter Chicagoans have experienced in decaaaaades (as if we need any reminders). I was wandering the streets of Chicago looking for good food, of course. What ever could be better while visiting Chicago during the Polar Vortex 4 (or 6? or 7?) than running inside to this little spot for 2 giant, delicious, greasy-but-not-too greasy NY slices for under 5 DOLLARS? I am generally not a fan of cheap food. I'm changing. I've paid $10 for truffle fries in Washington (tangent: this causes me to feel both embarrassed and defensive, btw, because they were *really* good fries---see review for Poste), so I was shocked and jumping for joy when my friend took me here for the happy hour priced slice. Ah, the Midwest. It's a small joint, with a no-frills, no-fuss vibe, but who cares when you can get good pizza cheap? Again, just what could be better than 2 pieces of pizza for less than 5 bucks??? Fine. I'll tell you what could be better. A swim up bar for a tropical cocktail and a fresh fruit plate followed by a yoga class on the beach and a nap on an all-inclusive resort in Mexico would be better, but really, only marginally.

Ordered via the website and clicked "delivery" and then finished the order through GrubHub. It all went well until I got a text saying my order was ready for "pick-up" which needless to say surprised me. Called to ask what they were going to do and they said it was "out of the delivery area" so I had to go pick up the order. This is 45 minutes after the order was placed and I was left our of options with a pregnant wife at my side. They offered to give me a $10 dollar credit but only if I kept the order open which basically means if I go pick it up. If I wanted a pick up order I would have placed one! Poor show for Santullo's and Grubhub.....

So, I emailed the manager of the establishment and the response was: crickets. What am I to think, but that they don't care, right? Clearly they don't. I went in for a quick bite then back to my desk. Ok. I walk in, ask for a slice of sausage, pay my bill, walk out, get back to work-oh look! I got a slice of pepperoni. I like pepperoni as well-fine, I'll just eat it. Only thing is-it tasted like cardboard. Stiff, dry, brittle, tasteless. yup. Go back another day same week. Asked if they carry sausage. Yes, we do, okay, I'll take a slice of sausage pizza then. Look at my receipt, it reads "pepperoni". I address it to the cashier. Cashier makes right. Get to work. Dry, charred, tasteless, cardboard. I wish I could post a photo, but I don't see that option here. Stay the f away from Santullo's! Far, far away. What is on their website is most definitely NOT anything nears what they serve! Shheeesh! the worst "pizza" ever! EVER!

I recently tried their New York style jumbo slice and it was good but not as good my beloved Chicago style pizza, the sauce was good and the sausage has a true Italian taste to it .The generous size slice of pizza came with a bag of chips or cookie and it was very filling and tasty but i'm used to a thicker dough. Their hostess was courteous and very helpful in our decision on what to get,( ***TIP***) the jumbo slice is half off for kids since they can't finish .

As a New Englander living in Chicago (and pretty spoiled from a childhood of NY-style pizza), Santullos tastes like home. Cheesy, tomato sauce that tastes like tomato sauce, and a thin but not crackery crust. Huge portions/slices, reasonably priced, and the perfect way to soak up all of the booze you just drank in Wicker Park. Music is the rad punk you listened to in high school; can be hard to get a table to seat more than two people at any hour; people-watching on North Ave is always excellent.

Diets be damned! If you're in the area, you need to take your skinny jeans wearing azz over to Santullo's and leave any semblance of dignity at the door... lookin' at YOU, Candice G. It's no wonder jeggings flourish in Wicker Park. You're gonna need them after eating here. I LOVE Santullo's. We became acquainted during Crunkmas 2012. For those not in the know, Crunkmas is what my friends and I loving named our binge drinking ladies' night out the Friday before Xmas. We meet up at a BYOB restaurant in a previously plotted out neighborhood and slowly work our way around to as many bars as possible. It's not unusual for these events to go from 12pm - 12am and beyond. You definitely have to be smart about it and make sure you get some food in your belly along the way. We originally tried to hit up Piece; however, I've yet to grace their doorway when there was less than a 30 minute wait. That's fine 'n dandy any other day, but after a giant fishbowl of booze from Crocodile - NOPE! I needed sustenance and my mind was made up on pizza. Luckily, Santullo's Eatery is just a few steps down the street and they had many open tables. Weekends are possibly the best time to be there. Pizzas are usually fresh and there are many options from which to choose. The first time I went there I had something with feta cheese crumbled on top. I don't even remember what else was on it because 1) it was almost a year ago and 2) this was like hour 8 of drinking. However, I vividly remember the feta and that their New York style pizza is quite possibly my most favorite of pizza cuts and crusts. I've since been back maybe 3 or 4 times, usually after some drinking. These things tend to go hand in hand. They also have incredibly convenient hours for pizza indulgence. Whenever I find myself in the area, I almost immediately try and figure out how to convince others to join me here. I came after a Yelp Elite Event at Red Door with a bunch of Yelpers and again after an Unofficial Yelp Event that I organized and got Candice to come with. I was glad I was wearing a skirt because I don't think fat pants would have cut it. Boy, did we go to town on that hand tossed goodness. We split 3 slices of pizza, 2 bottles of tea, 1 small deli of pasta salad, 1 bomb ass chocolate brownie and she took home some bread pudding that looked really good (she reports it was a bit dry, but we both still rave about the brownie). This time there wasn't any feta pizza on the menu, but they had no problem letting me order the featured flavor. The first piece didn't have a whole lot of topping on it, so they insisted we keep it and remade the order, this time throwing a shit ton of sheep cheese on top. If I didn't know any better, I'd think Xzibit were back there pimping my pizza: "Yo,sup dawg! I herd you like feta, so I put feta in your feta so you can feta while you feta."

Solid large slice of thin crust pepperoni pizza for $4. Good chocolate chip cookie too. Will be back!

Just moved to the area and have had this place 2 times. The first time I ordered a cheese pizza slice which was very good! I was surprised to see they were closing up 45 minutes before the scheduled close time and felt rushed. I was in a hurry today at lunch and stopped in again.. I got the Laua pizza which was alright but a little too much ham for my taste. I definitely preferred the plain cheese. All in all, it's OK. I did find the cashier pretty unfriendly.

New York style slices, yes please. The only ones they really have is cheese, pepperoni and sausage, they have daily specials too. I'm just not into the blasting rock music, as other people have mentioned but it's not THAT bad. Delicious pizza!

I visited this place about 3 years ago, and I have to say I thought the quality was much better then. I understand they're doing New York style pizza, but just having come back from visiting NYC, it's a little hard to compare. They have the "foldable" aspect there, but a basic pepperoni slice shouldn't make me go "oh" (in a downward sad way). The pepperoni meat slices themselves were small (just like the hormel you can buy from the grocery), very few and very far between. The cheese was dry, no stringy melted goodness. The pizza overall seemed a little stale =/. Maybe I got the last slice of that pie after it sat for a few hours, but still, that wasn't cool.

Amazing pizza, great service, great atmosphere. I had the BBQ chicken with a porter beer. Enjoyed looking out the window as I enjoyed my dinner. I definitely recommend this place!

You know when Ralph Wiggum says "it tastes like burning"? I think he was describing the pizza at Santullo's. The slices taste like a strange combination of burnt grease, burnt oven with a mild pizza flavor infusion. Considering there are very little options for slices in the neighborhood, I guess it'll do.

I'm disappointed about the rating for Santullo's pizza. They deserve more than the rating given. Santullo's is spitting distance to a New York slice as you can get. Crispy, chewy, crust, cheesy, and not a lot on the tomato sauce. I don't even mind the chard crust at times cuz' that's how they make em' in the east coast. The best pizza in Chicago if your looking for a nice slice of thin crust pie.

Many years ago, when I was a single in the neighborhood, I'd eat here once a week. Now, I eat here 2-3 times a year. I love this pizza. I especially love their Friday 3-way cheese pizza! $2 happy hour slices make this a no-brainer lunch spot. 2 pieces will get you nice and full. I've ordered whole pies, but that's not what this place is for. By the slice is the way to go. Consistency is fair, staff is decent. But when I'm here, I'm just trying to get my grub on.

I am giving this 3 stars because I am a eternal optimist. This place is more fitting as a place to go see punk rock or a heavy metal band due to the staff looking they are homeless musicians. I felt that the Ramone's were going to walk through the door at any moment...and then I remembered that one or two of the Ramone's are dead so there is no possibility of that I ordered a plain cheese pizza which I got like 6 minutes later and it seemed to be burned...Two other people were eating next to me and their vegetable pizza was also burned... They have old style ovens just like the oven from the seinfeld episode where kramer asked the guys who make the calzone's if they can toast his coat in the oven to make it warmer because it was wet. I believe if I ordered fries or a calzone, maybe they too would be burned by the large industrial oven that the staff may or may not know how to use :) Here is a hint: put it on 25 instead of 500 degrees., The diet coke was not burned.

Nice to see you again, my long lost friend. I used to frequent Santullo's when I lived in this hood. When you need a slice of 'za on the quick, Santullo is your man. I haven't eaten here in years, but recently ordered two slices: The Hipster (in this case hipster = feta cheese + red peppers...) and straight up cheese. They weren't as gloriously greasy and floppy as I recalled - sadly, both slices were on the old/dry side. I'll be back...

The beer mug was so cold it made ice in the beer which was actually fun to drink. I enjoy watching the pizza tossers and the pizza size and taste are so spot on I wish I could go in and have some more. The salad also looked good. I like the music they play and the booths are very comfortable.

Get over the whole style of pizza debate. It's pizza. It is pizza. I've never had greasy pizza here, but maybe it's because I never get pepperoni. And now I'm here at 4:45 on a Thursday. $1 off all beers AND $2 happy hour slices. Why would I be eating anywhere else right now? For those that don't like the music, just depends who is behind the counter. For those that complain about the staff, you try dealing with drunk assholes in Wicker Park on a Friday night. I don't even like being on the sidewalk, let alone being stuck behind a counter at a pizza place at 1am in this neighborhood. Pizza happy hour is my happiest hour of the day.

Oh look, my favorite New York pizza place! I'm gonna go get me a New York slice! This is what I say in my head everytime I walk by Santullo's. Yes, that's me with my nose pressed up against the glass, looking longingly at your pizza. No, I don't want any money. Just pizza. P.S. The smaller sized mac n cheese is only $2 and it's a generous portion. It's made with gooey pepperjack and totally worth it.

Getting a table for dinner in Wicker Park on a Saturday night is basically impossible. Most of the prime restaurants have waits longer than an hour and refuse to take reservations. So what happens when you are very hungry and tired of walking? You become adventurous and pick a random place and cross your fingers. I was having dinner with two friends, one of which is the pickiest eater that I have ever met. This is the reason I end up eating burgers and pizza with her so often. Can't say I complain. We had originally intended to go to Piece Brewery & Pizzeria but the line was absolutely insane. When we walked by Santullo's Eatery on North Ave and smelled the delicious aroma of NY-style pizza, I knew it had the potential to be a winner. And it was. I live in Chicago so sometimes I get tired of deep-dish pizza. I love the appeal of the thin crust, huge slice pizza that my grandparents and I enjoy so much. They grew up in Brooklyn and they have taught me everything I know about folding the piece in half for easier consumption. We waited in line to order and could only collectively decide as a group on the cheese pizza. The college budget doesn't allow for many toppings.. The guy at the register said the pizza would be out in about forty minutes but it only took twenty. Pretty clutch since we were running out of small talk ideas. The pizza was HUGE. I preface this statement that all three of us agree that the pizza looks abnormally larger in the photo due to the camera angle. The pieces are ginormous but are only moderately filling due to the thinness of the pizza. The traditional Italian pizza flavors were amazing and the cheese-to-sauce ratio was optimal. Overall, a fantastic pizza for a great price and minimum wait time. I still have yet to try Piece but so far, Santullo's Eatery is my favorite pizza place in Wicker Park and maybe even Chicago. A great place to grab some NY-style pizza, catch up with friends and not die in starvation while waiting for a table on Saturday night.

ROACH ALERT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Lets ignore the fact that their pizza is a sinfully poor imitation of NY pizza for a moment and talk about their cockroach problem. The problem: 1. they have roaches 2. they rude girl behind the counter was dismissive about the situation. 3. After hearing some yelling the rude counter girl grabs some napkins expecting the roach 4. She fails to grabs the mega cockroach and tries to stomp it with her boot 5. After a few failed stomps she finally squished the kitchen bound roach At this point I got up a left. HOW DISGUSTING. How dare you charge 4 bucks for a plain slice of pizza that is so bland it taste like it should be diet ,despite the rivers of flowing grease, with a roach infestation so intense that even your staff knows the drill. Fucking deplorable!

The closest to New York Style pizza that we've found outside of NYC. I always thought Chicago made nothing but deep dish. My next slice will be from this place. The meatball looked really good but I opted for the Ell Hipster which was roasted red peppers, feta cheese and a little red sauce. One slice is sufficient but it's so good you'll want two!

    (4)
  • Lisa A.

Big pizza fan and although I love deep dish, you can't go wrong with a NY slice. Their pizza is not saucy, it has a tender chewy dough with enough meat for each bite. The drive is worth the slice.

The people who work at Santullo's understand coolness on an entirely different level than you and I. Wrapped in a vortex of coolness, they cannot properly hear you speak, and when they speak the coolness vortex that surrounds them muffles their words. It may take a minute for them to recognize that you are even there, and another minute for them to decide which among them will have to momentarily avert their gaze from the coolness nethersphere and take your order. Proper sandwich coolness infusion takes up to 20 minutes, so be ready, you will have plenty of time to attempt to understand coolness while you wait for your sandwich. When you get your sandwich you won't not be disappointed. If you asked for no tomatoes, tomatoes you shall have; because they are cool and you should be so lucky as to have been given tomatoes by a coolness ambassador of Santullo's. Don't worry, even if you have bleach blond hair AND a full sleeve AND a boyfriend with a full beard, the purple haired one and the meth addict behind the counter will pay you no extra attention, they cannot hear you through the vortex regardless of how cool you may appear. I commend them for having produced a sandwich at all, and for that they get two stars. Maybe the vortex makes their subs look bigger to them, because I spent $17 for two subs that amounted to 6 good bites each. I don't know, I guess they are so cool that it makes up for it. PS - I was so hungry afterwards that I went to potbellies.

I love a good hipster pizza/sandwich joint as much as anyone, however I had a horrible experience at Santullo's. Ordered a sandwich with a drink while my friend ordered a slice of cheese pizza. We filled up on soda and proceeded to look for a place to sit. Every table was filthy. As we had our first sips of Diet Coke, we realized it was really flat. I went up to let the cashier know, and was met with an empty stare. He said he didn't know how that machine worked to which I said I'd just take a bottle of DC. He charged me the 2 bucks for it! They yelled that my sandwich was ready over the hardcore heavy metal blaring from the speakers. The sandwich wasn't half bad, but I started to regret taking a few bites after seeing the filthy chef saunter out of the kitchen. We sat waiting for about ten minutes for my friend's pizza until finally she went over to check on its status. Mind you, we are two of five people in the whole joint. The cashier said, oh we yelled it was ready awhile ago then just put it back. What ?!? Starting to realize this guy's not the sharpest tool in the shed... After five minutes of him retrieving the pizza from God knows where, it appeared as if it was a week old and run over! We immediately left everything, and got the Hell out of there. Where is the management in this place?! Gross, gross, gross.

Friends don't let friends eat as much I did here... lookin' at YOU, Ericka A. After a rousing few rounds of Bingo at The Hideout, E and I were feeling pretty famished. I looked to E for a dinner venue suggestion and she's immediately proposed Santullo's and I countered with 'I do!'. It was 8:30 on a Wednesday evening and there were plenty of open seats. It had been probably 5 years since my last visit here and I was a little confused by the menu only because I'm lazy and not very good at reading or reading comprehension. There's a list of the days of the week with a meat and veggie pizza combo for each day, and then you can also get their standard sausage, pepperoni, or cheese everyday of the week. You order pizza by the slice at the counter and it usually takes anywhere from 5-10 for your 'za slice to get warmed up. I didn't hold back on ordering -- together E and I downed 2 iced tea bottled beverages, pasta salad, bread pudding, a giant chocolate brownie with powdered sugar, and two... okay, three slices of pizza -- and out total ran in at $18.27. On a Wednesday, your veggie options are either cheese or The Great White, with red onion, sun-dried tomatoes, and feta with an olive oil base. I wanted something more than plain Jane cheese so I went with The Great White and felt like it was pretty 'meh'. I just think it's hard to white pizza when you're not doing it fresh as it's already a pretty dry pizza and letting it sit until a final re-heat definitely doesn't help. If I came back on another Wednesday I'd def go with the plain cheese. The past salad was decent and the bread pudding was also kind of dry but the brownies... daaaamn. That was one good-ass brownie. It was moist and doughy in the center, firm on the outside. Definitely one of the best brownies I've had in recent times. I love staff here also. Helpful, super friendly, efficient... and when I went to grab our tray with pizza the girl behind the counter said that one of the slices ended up with hardly any feta cheese on it, so they threw in a second slice that was absolutely loaded with feta. Really nice surprise... although I was guilty of over-eating to the point where I had to walk very slowly and steadily back to my car for fearing of barfing if I moved too fast. An epic meal for sure.

The sandwich was OK. To be honest, it was about the same as a Jimmy John's, except it took longer and cost more. But the real deal-breaker was the deafening death-metal soundtrack, which tells me 1 thing: You are not cool enough to be here. And thank god. Decided to make it a carry-out.

The pizza we ordered wasn't that good. It was super greasy. Sbarro pizza slices are way better and less expensive. You are paying higher prices for simple things because of the location. And how could you not have fries? And the music was way too loud. I went to eat not to listen to music! All these new business opening up out of nowhere just want to cash in on the location.

For the second time I called to order a full pie and was told they aren't making them - after both times calling an hour previous to ask how late they are making full pies. DON'T SAY YOU ARE GOING TO MAKE PIES TILL 10:40 IF YOU AREN'T GOING TO BE MAKING PIES AT 10:40. Lame.

Say it's a nice Saturday and you've been day-drinking with friends. This is basically the perfect place to stop and eat for dinner. That's how I ended up there the first time. They have pretty good pizza that they serve as whole pies or by the slice. They also have a pretty good sandwich selection and they serve beer on tap. It can be busy, but you're able to order, sit, and be served very quickly. The location is good too, right by the Damen/Milwaukee/North intersection. This all makes it ideal for a group of people to stop at between bar hopping. I've been there a few times since, but has to be something I'm in the mood for. The pizza slices are huge. However, it is New York style. So, it is super floppy and does not end up being as filling as you would think. Their vegetarian and vegan options are pretty impressive too.

Walked in maybe 15 min before close and got a slice of pizza and a beer. As soon as they closed they told us we had to leave. We asked to finish our beer and they refused, it was literally 5 mins after they closed. They could've warned us when we ordered that they were closing soon. They could've been a little less rude about everything. The pizza was good but I'll never go back.

I can only give this delicious pizza 3 stars because the atmosphere was unbearable. The staff was extremely unfriendly and the music(if that's what you call it) was blaring. If you go wear eat plugs, run in and run out as fast as possible! Pizza was great!

  • Saurabh P.

This is hands down the best New York Style thin crust in Chicago. The sandwiches are as good, if not better than the pizza. Wish they delivered to me. The chicken sando sandwich is my favorite, although I've had all of them and I can't say that there's any I didn't like! Going there tomorrow.

the pizza might have been pretty good if anyone cared...i felt like the recipe was good but executed by a hipster who didn't give a fuck. burned garlic...my slice too charred my wife's slice almost gooey. wtf dude...pay attention to your oven! the counter guy was a disinterested dirty guy covered in poorly done random tattoos. the tables were dirty as was the floor. hey owner! fire these clowns and train some folks who give a fuck about their work and we'll come back!

Man, what happened to this place? It used to be awesome. There used to be some super cool people working behind the counter, but lately I've noticed that things have gone downhill. Some of the workers are super slow and have really crappy attitudes. I ordered food to go and watched four people who came in after me get their food before I did. It took them 20 minutes to make two sandwiches and they were completely unapologetic. Horrible experience.

I got the margherita pizza delivered and the guy that dropped the pizza off was super nice and friendly. The 2 stars is for the pizza itself. I absolutely love NY style pizza (sorry) and had the best joint right by my old place in California. This place does not compare on any level. The crust is my favorite part of the pizza (hell, I even enjoy pizza hut's crust). This crust was a little burnt, super tough and hard to chew through which is crazy because it's thin crust! There were slices tomato and mozzarella, a sprinkle of basil and a thin layer of sauce. I ate the first few bites on it's own but decided it needed flavor. I added parmesan cheese and garlic powder just to give it a bit of oomph. Sigh... at about $40 after tip and delivery fee, this was definitely not worth it. The search for great NY style pizza in Chicago continues.

Never ordered anything other than pizza here, but it isn't bad for a quick bite pizza place. Best time to hit here like others said is inbetween 3-5pm on weekdays, when certain slices are $2. Service can be hit or miss, but it's fine for a cheap place to eat on the hurry. Much better than a certain other late night 'Crotch' eating option inbetween it and the Damen 'L station that has one word starting with F and the other with T, that'll remain nameless. With the recent arrival of Dimo's/Ian's nearby(still think of it as the latter, for whatever strange reason), I hope they manage to stay in business. Too bad that too often when I'm near this area, I unfortunately narrowly miss hitting here before happy hour ends.

I dig it. I think some of these reviews about the hipster staff are hilarious, and probably true, but the fact is, Santullo's makes a good sandwich. THE ONLY THING, and it's kind of a big deal, is that they always over-cook the chicken. So, I've stopped ordering it. The other sandwiches are awesome, and while I always mean to order pizza when I go in, I can't help but get a sandwich instead.. Sandwiches are, my weakness. Along with macaroni and cheese, which, here, they make with pepper jack cheese. It's wonderful. I personally have never had too much of an opinion regarding the staff, but I could see what everyone's talking about. They are all very beardy hipster-esq types, but my three-star rating is due to the dry chicken, and the dirty tables. Get these two things figured out, and they'll be golden!

I only give 3 stars because of my poor choice of food selection. I got the Monday special vegan bbq pizza. What a bad move... I'd definitely would go back tho to try somethin different!

Loved this place until they deeply disappointed me when I got a couple of terrible slices of their specialty pizzas and received less than edible food. I tried to contact management to the e-mail posted on their website and they never even acknowledged my correspondence. Why would I want to spend $12 just to throw the product in the garbage? My pizza was supposed to have chicken, bacon, blue cheese and onions... but all I got was dry crispy dough and a sprinkle of dry bacon. Ha??? Of course I should've checked it before I left, but you expect to get what you ordered right? Sorry, but NEVER again!!! I have the pic to prove it... just don't know how to upload it here :(

As someone who grew up in the NJ/NY Metro area, a good pizza seems to be hard to come by. But, as my favorite food, I try to find the best available wherever I am. I stop by Wicker quite a bit, as I have some family there. Whenever I'm near, I have to drop by Santullo's. The pizza is the closest I have had to my childhood memories of pizza in NYC. The slices are huge, tasty, and always fill me up to the brim, and then some. The crust is the perfect middleman between standard and thin crust. The edges are crispy and doughy, while the sauce and seasoning is perfection. The staff is always friendly and chatty, which give the place an awesome feel. The music selection is always killer, and the ambiance at midnight is great. They are quick and accurate with every order I've made there, making Santullo's a must have for me when I'm nearby.

Awesome. The special slices every day are all incredibly unique and incredible delicious, and even the normal cheese and pepperoni slices are enormous and tasty. Perfect for sit-in lunch or even take out dinner. The 3-5 pm $2 slice happy hour period is also very clutch.

This is definitely not my top choice for NY style pizza in the city. Terrible service and medicore pizza. Maybe their whole pizzas are better than ordering a slice that's been sitting around all day but I'll take my chances and spend my money elsewhere.

The pizza was pretty decent, but the staff was BEYOND rude and the restaurant was really dirty inside. We ventured in on a recommendation but will never be back. After a staff member screamed at us for taking the wrong slice of pepperoni pizza (how could we know?!) we approached the manager who just kind of shrugged like "what do u want me to do?" Uhhh- manage the staff & restaurant?! The staff totally killed it. We sat and ate the food anyway because we were hungry and witnessed another altercation with the same employee and another customer, that ended in a profane yelling match and the customer throwing away their barely eaten food and stomping out. Too much drama for a decent slice of pizza; there are far better places to eat at in wicker park. (Let alone, the rest of the city.)

I am from New Jersey and I take my pizza very seriously. Sorry Chicagoans, deep dish is not pizza. But this is. I had tears in my eyes this was so good. (Disclaimer: not as good as NY/NJ/CT pizza but this is as good as it gets out here.)

The Situation: White Girl Wasted at Big Star after waaaaaay too many margaritas, cheladas and a particularly rough shot of whiskey. The Solution: Santullos and their giant pizza slices. Big, foldable, greasy-ass slices that coat your belly and keep you as hung-over free as humanly possible the next day.

The cheese pizza slice is good, and offers a great value because it's huge! However, it had an overwhelming oregano flavor, which was disappointing since it ruined the flavor of the cheese. We also tried a ham sandwich and a caesar salad. The salad was incredibly average...and the dressing tasted like the worst grocery store dressing imaginable. The sandwich was fine, nothing you couldn't get anywhere else. I wish the pizza had a better flavor. We will be back for the pizza happy hour...great deal for an okay slice of pizza.

Santullo's has pretty good pizza. And I do love pizza and especially New York Style Pizza. Well at Santullo's they slice you a pretty big piece and I myself had a piece of their sausage which I was surprised cost me only $2.00! I also ordered a small caesar salad which came with 2 pieces of garlic toast on top and it had croutons but.. the croutons tasted kindda burnt and nasty so that was a downer.. I had a bottle of coke zero which cost me $2.00 which I thought was kind of high for a 20 oz. but.. I was really thirsty so que sera, sera... The interior of Santullo's isn't much, a few booths and a few tables.. A counter where you order and behind the counter there is a guy tossing pizza dough in the air.. But.. honestly.. Santullo's fixed my pizza craving and my caesar salad craving and I had a decent enough meal for about $9.00. I dont think I would go out of my way to return to Santullo's though.. Just was'nt that memorable of a meal! But.. it was a good quick fix.. Not a cure.. just a fix..

What is worse than a below average pizza with a teeth breaking hard crust? Super loud death metal music. Was not sure if they were trying to be ironic or some type of staff joke on the customers. Next time I will wait the two hours to get into Piece.

If you are looking for a hipster to be rude to you, then this is your place! Go here to annoy one behind the counter with your mere presence.

My friend needed something to eat last night while we were drinking at Lokal. We went outside to find something quick and cheap, and someone pointed us here. Two large slices of pizza were $8 something. This is a good deal! I had a slice of cheese which was fine, and my friend had a slice of the meatball. It looked really good. I'm not crazy about New York style pizza, but this was fine. It was decent pizza at a decent price, so I can't complain.

  • Gianluca D.

I have never seen in my whole life such a rude and incompetent staff. I asked for a pizza that they told me they had run out of and two minutes later they sold that pizza to another customer. When I asked for explanations all they said was "I am sorry". The death metal music is unbearable. Finally, at 11.01 p.m. they kicked us out and didn't even let us finish our beer because "they had to go home". When I told them it's not the right way to deal with customers they told me "well then never come back again" and that is what I'll do. I would not recommend this place to anyone.

So I am writing this yelp review on behalf of my friend. She placed an order for us to eat and it took well over 2 hours to get to us. Mind you, I could've picked up the damn pizza myself since we live about 15 minutes walking distance had it not been freezing outside. She called 3 times asking what the status was and the first time, it hadn't even been sent out. Second time, it had been sent out but unknown as to where and how long it was going to take. Third time, it was suppose to be there right away and had yet to still arrive. Once the driver showed up this is what he said "sorry for the wait, but yeah, it'll be $17" they gave us half off our order but that is only because my friend made sure she got compensated somehow. Not only was she about 40 minutes late to work, but our pizza was not hot. It wasn't horrible pizza but there is also a papa johns around the block and I could deal with that if I'm going to have crap service and cold pizza. think twice about ordering from this place.

We were supposed to eat pizza at Piece Brewery but it was too packed and we had to wait too long. My friend suggested this place and I am glad he did. Large, delicious slices of pie can be found here. I ordered pepperoni but there are many other slices to try. Plus it looks like there are some special slices. Zipzap Zubidy Bop!

Decent greasy pizza, and good giant salads (surpassingly) but holy hell is the service at this place slow. It takes like 15 minutes to get a pre-made slice served.

Before anything: 1. This isn't New York. Stop complaining. 2. This is a pizza shop, not a fancy restaurant with waiter service. Stop complaining. I've been here countless times, always a decent slice and I never had anyone treat me badly. The pizza is good, not the best, but worth the cost and it WILL fill you up. This is the type of place you go into to eat a big slice of pizza, have a pop, maybe a cookie, and then be on your merry way. The people who are working are cooks and ALSO the cashier people, they are making orders usually and most of the time aren't very talkative. It's shouldn't hinder a place that has good food that is quick and extremely cheap compared to the surrounding eateries. I suggest the sausage slice, but all of them are pretty good. The big cookies aren't too bad either. Plus, free refills on pop I believe, so that's always a plus. Don't be an asshole, this place is good.

$3.75 is too much for a slice of cheese pizza, but at least Santullo's makes a good slice. (Why this is the same cost as the slices that have toppings on it is beyond me, but I digress.) I like the space and the staff said whassup on my way in and my way out, so I'm down with that. Otherwise, nothing special...carry on.

Still possibly the best cheap meal deal I've come across in a while. Considering I work in the neighborhood, this used to be my staple lunch. After 3:00 PM, you can get one of their slices (big!) for $2.00. Even when you eat before 3:00 PM, you can have a monster slice and a fountain drink for $5.00 after tax. Plus, the pizza is really good! It's that classic NY style stuff that you have to basically fold over to eat. Their sausage is what I tend to order, unless it is a day where they are offering The Brickhouse for slices. Another thing to note: the music selection in here is excellent. Tends to be more on the metal side of things, but a great break away from the sanitized corporate garbage that gets pumped into the air at work.

Awesomeness in a can! Great food, wide selection of beer to get my girlfriend drunk with and they're always playing some kind of awesome rock! Whether it's metal or punk, the tattooed employees make you feel like you're at home!

I've eaten at Santullos a couple of times and have enjoyed all of my pizza experiences! What i am most excited about is their venture into faux meats and cheese for us vegetarian and vegan pizza lovers!! They now make pizzas with Upton's Seitan. If you are vegan you can order a pizza with vegan Daiya cheese!! Check out their pizza slice specials of the day. On Mondays and Tuesdays they have vegan slices of pizza for $4. The remaining days they have specialty vegetarian slices that may or may not have seitan on them! Very tasty! Also M-F they have pizza happy hour. Pepperoni (real meat), Sausage (real meat), and Cheese slices for 2$!! Such a great deal since the slices are traditional NYC style! If you are vegetarian you can always add on toppings for cheap!!

good place for NY style pizza, im just not used to it as all living in chicago my whole life, theyre super thin slices, like 4 on top of each other is like 1 chicago slice, but if youre looking for NY style this is a good place for it

I love coming to this place on Saturdays to get the Hipster. One fills me up but I always tend to get a second piece because it is just that freaking good. BTW They just added Angry Orchard (hard cider) on tap which moved this place up on the delicious scale a few notches.

Took the hike out to see if this was truly like pizza back home in NY. I will say that the dough/crust was very good. A little thinner than I am used to but very chewy and tasty unlike the dough typically found here in Chicago. The thing that ruined it for me was the sauce. WAY too sweet in my opinion. All I tasted was sugar. I feel like they got the hardest part right with the dough but lost me with the sauce.

If you're looking for a quick bite in a no-frills spot that is open late - look no farther. The pizza is pretty good - with a nice crust (wish I would have had some ranch dressing to dip my crust in....). There are a few beers on tap if you are so inclined. Earlier in the day, there are more pizza options, but later in the evening, there are only a few - if you go with the cheese, you won't be disappointed. Definitely a good spot for quick grub. The bathroom is surprisingly spotless....

Long story short: For what it was, I guess it was ok. But I mean, New York style pizza in Chicago? Long story long: I was with a smaller group of people and after doing some outreach in the nearby neighborhood, we decided to come here for dinner because with 15 or so of us and having a somewhat limited budget, this place seemed to fit the bill. Pretty standard pizza parlor type place. Nothing really to write home about. We had apparently come in during happy hour, which was slices of their Brickhouse (basically a meatlovers) pizza for $2 or something like that. I opted to get 2 of those and a drink. I was initially impressed with sheer size of their slices. Their slices were probably about a quarter of a 16-18 inch pizza. A couple of the more... petite... people in our group, it was as big as their face. They messed up a couple of people's orders, not terribly, but it caused confusion and in the end, I'm still not sure if we got everything everybody ordered, but whatever. Overall, it was alright for what it was, but I've definitely had better pizza. Plus, we were in the land of deep dish, so I guess they do ok for serving up a rival type of pizza, but in a small way I wish we went somewhere else.

Man I love this place. I've only gone when I've been drinking in the area and by the time we get here, I'm drunk enough that anything greasy will hit the spot. I always get the NYC style sausage pizza. I don't remember if they offer other menu items. I get my pizza, sprinkle red pepper flakes, and process to shove it in my face. Soooo good. If I were sober, it would be way too greasy for me, even for pizza.

Gotta give this place 5 stars. I actually didn't have pizza when I came here. I got the chicken salad with bleu cheese and bacon. My total with a drink came just under $10. I know what you are thinking, "Geez, that's kind of a lot for a salad and a drink at a drop-in pizza place." NOT TRUE! You get fresh garlic bread with it, and when you see the size of this thing, you will gasp!! I had plenty of leftovers. This place does not skimp on portions, so you for sure get what you pay for. Also, let me give the place additional props for the hardcore music.

Pizza is great when its cooked perfectly, not great when overcooked, its about a 50/50 chance of either. Slice of thin cheese and a fountain drink is around $5. "NYC slices" but slices in NYC aren't this expensive. $5 minimum credit card charge was strictly enforced on a $4.96 bill... which was very petty. Had to upsize my drink for them to let me buy a slice. They will lose more than the 30 cents they gained in the long run. I easily could have been a regular here, as I live close, but its just not consistent enough and the prices are kind of high. I'll stop occasionally, but won't go out of my way.

Grabbed some pizza on a Sunday, place was slow, not too many tables were full. We all got a couple slices of pizza, and some pop. The pizza was alright, I'd say it wasn't cheesy enough. The crust was good, everyone finished their food. I'd say, decent portions, decent prices, but the environment wasn't too upbeat and the staff seemed indifferent to their customers. I'm sure it was just a slow day, so I'd say go for some decent pizza if you are into that kinda thing.

As we entered at 11:30am my friend had warned us that they usually play loud punk or metal. Oddly enough we walked in to the sweet sounds of the Culture Club. No matter as I wasn't there for the music. I ordered the classic italian sandwich on the potato roll. The size was perfect and the sandwich was great. To top it off they had my favorite Zapp's Gator Tater chips. The slices of pizza were ridiculously large as well, so might have try one of those next time...

Good pizza, but if every time I go in there the dude at the register has a major attitude. Just serve the pizza and dont be a hipster punk!

I've never met a Santullo's grinder I didn't like. (Love the chicken vesuvio & the veggie in particular, but they're all good). And their slices are pretty tasty too. Might I add they got beer on tap. Not bad! Its simply a neighborhood spot that I enjoy and just might shed a [single] tear if it were to suddenly disappear one day. If you're in the 'hood looking for an affordable & satisfying lunch (or light dinner), check this shit out, (The hipsters don't bite. Promise)

I really like this place. The location is perfect for a (large) slice during or after a night of visiting the area bars. The Damen Blue-line is a stone's throw away (which is good cus parking in this area is pretty much a nightmare). I had the goat-cheese and roast red pepper pizza. It was damn good. It took a little bit for it to be ready, but when it was the guy placed it in front of me and said, "one Hipster, to go!" I didn't know it was called that when I ordered it. How Wicker Park of me. I've also visited for their $2 slice happy-hour which is during the week from 4-6pm. Definitely a good choice if you're in the area and like pizza at a good price.

Of all the things in life there are a few that make it worth living. Two of these are pizza and beer and these just so happen to be the mainstays of Santullo's menu = why I love this place. I went here after a long and cold CCM in February. The Art Show was going on upstairs in the Flatiron, but we had to get our grub on first. I had never been here before, but the friend I was with told me they have the best pizza in Wicker Park. He was right about this and what made it even better was that they had ice cold beer on tap. (I know you are probably wondering why was I drinking cold beer when I was frozen - idk - I just like beer) I got a slice of cheese and should have gotten the "Three Way", which is a slice with three different kinds of cheeses on it. If my cheese lexicon and vocabulary were better I'd list them here, but will instead just note that this kind of slice was $4 while a regular slice was $3.25. Their slices are New York style so you have to fold them to eat them. Being so big though they really hold the crushed red pepper well since the cheese sticks to the dough better than a typical deep dish. Fat, cheesie, slices - does it get any better? They have a 'happy-hour' on weekdays from 4~6pm where slices are only $2; I gotta go one day. They also had a vegan chili advertised so if you are vegan don't think it is all cheese and nothing else. For the vegetarians out there though the cheese pizza is the whip! If you are like me and love pizza and beer - go here now!

I really, really, really love this pizza. It is the best New York/Jersey style pizza I've found in Chicago. My only complaint is that it is seriously over-priced. I think for Chicago residents used to spending a lot on deep dish, it may not seem over-priced, but when you're used to getting a slice for $2 in Jersey, comparable in size and deliciousness, it seems like a bit of a rip-off. Regardless, given that I'm a captive audience here in Chicago, I always begrudgingly shell out the money for that wonderful wonderful pizza. Oh, and one tip. Kids under 12 (I think that's the age) get a full sized slice for less money. They do not point this out to you, though, so if you have a kid with you, don't forget to order a "kid's slice."

    (4)
  • Laura P.

If you like grease you will love this place. My slice was all grease. Cheese, soaked in grease. Crust, soaked in grease. The only reason that they get 2 stars is for Sprecher products. My stomach keeps kicking me as we speak for eating here.

    (2)
  • Joe B.

Keep in mind, this 4/5 stars is exclusively on the "things I want to get when I'm drunk at 3 am" list. Taco Bell would get a 5 on some nights. With that being said, Santullo's is delicious, greasy pizza that hasn't let me down yet.

I live in this neighborhood so when I get a pizza craving, I unfortunately end up here more times than I would care to admit. Being from NY originally, I am an admitted pizza snob, but this place is just such a poor attempt at NY style pizza. The cheese is overcooked almost always, the crust is subpar....just everything about it screams "i was made by a lazy, disgruntled, tatted out hipster". And guess what, it was! I would be more forgiving of this place if the employees were friendly, but they are not. They blast heavy metal and treat their customers like they are a burden. If you want some decent pizza, Piece is ok and Coal Fire is probably the best thin (though more italian style than true NY) crust in the city. Avoid Santullo's unless you're drunk and desperate.

I can add this to the list of great lunch places to go to in the Wicker Park/Bucktown area. I was hesitant to go to this place because only a block further down North Avenue is Lucia Italian--A favorite sandwich place of mine. So I decided to try out Santullo's, and I was very much impressed. The Chicken Vesuvio was good, not greasy, and it had delicious ingredients on it. I've seen some comments about the staff behind the counter. When I was there, it was a couple of old burnouts who weren't rude, but they weren't very helpful. Hell, I don't care what influences such tasty food, as long as I can keep getting it. They're on par with Lucia, but maybe a little less expensive. I had a sandwich, soup, and potato salad for $12. That's pretty good.

(Insert snarky anti-Chicago comment, reminding you all why NY is so much better, here) Are you done? Good. Shut up. Santullo's is tight. Is it authentic NY pizza? No. That's because NY pizza sucks. I'll stop by here late at night so I can pretend that NYer have a claim to the world of pizza. I'll humor them and enjoy a slice of faux NY pizza to give them a fighting chance. Do I really hate NY pizza? No. Actually, I love it, but I love Chicago-style more. My apologies for kicking NY style in the nuts, when I should have reserved it for the NYcentric douchebags and their hate rants. Santullo's is actually pretty good. Again, it's not authentic NY style, but we pretend to not know any better, because hey...it's not NY. NYers know they will not find good NY style in Chicago, so why bother? That's just stupid. I had a crappy Chicago-style pizza in San Diego, but I'll give them a pass because it's in freaking San Diego, not Chicago! So think twice about setting your dining experience up for failure and don't send the nukes over when you get home.

This place has changed immensely from the last time I went, from the look and feel of the restaurant all the way to the pizza itself...a good thing imo, as I hadn't eaten here for like 10 yrs (thought it a bit crap). It was definitely better than I remembered and bordering very closely to a 4-star...that said, the amount of grease dripping off these slices is crazy, artery clogging madness (and i *get that the grease is, in part, what makes a good slice of NY Syle pizza, well, good). It's just a little OTT imo.

heY, Look at this, its a Pizza place right next door to Piece! Yes, yes people, right next door to big bully Piece. Of course we are in Wicker park so you know what that means.......Hipsters! This my friend is where all the drunk hipsters end up late at night, full of Pabst and with empty bellies. But they cant be seen going into "Piece" So Santullos it is!!!!Yess jump in joy my tight jean wearing in need of a bath friends..... On to the Pizza,This is good Ny syle Pizza! Very good actually! And greasy just like its supposed to be! Hipsters tend to not wash their hands here as they can use the excess grease for hair gel. A greasy Shake and bake seal of approval!

This is really tough place to review... Ordered a few chicken sandwiches a week ago and they probably were the wettest thing I've ever eaten. Not sure if someone dropped a bottle of oil on them, or it fell in a puddle, or a wet diaper was emptied out; but seriously almost needed a spoon to eat it. Meanwhile, the pizza here is pretty good, I've only had it by the slice and found it quite satisfying. New York-ish style chewy crust with nicely melted cheese that doesn't look like it was bought at that shady mini-mart next door. Would like to get a whole pizza and then get back to you. So basically steer clear of the sandwiches and stick to the pizza.

    (3)

I eat here pretty much everyday. It is cheap Quick and easy. What can I say, its like fast food pizza but good.

  • Lauren M.

Whoever said this pizza is New York Style LIED, or truthful in that a lot of the pizza in NYC has gone seriously downhill but even that is still insulting to be compared to. The noise music is completely annoying and makes it difficult to have a conversation or really be around; which explains why it's usually not crowded. I've ordered a couple of things here that were overpriced, especially since the pizza is terrible among whatever else I've had. Frankly I'd rather starve.

  • Eileen L.

santullo's is now officially my favorite pizza place in chicago. the perfectly thin and chewy crust, new york style pizza is now graced by the presence of UPTON'S NATURALS. OMG. so the other night we ordered a supreme pizza with upton's sausage, green peppers and olives. it was like nothing i have ever experienced before...piece, i'm sorry but santullo's has now taken pizza to a whole new level. all 20" or bigger? of pure perfection. i have never been happier to spend $30 on a pie. i m in love. LOVE. happy hour here is always awesome. $2 slices, can't be beat that! if you haven't been to santullo's, then you haven't fully experienced wicker park! :)

  • Vanessa P.

I don't know why but I keep on coming back here! I am not much of a deep dish pizza kind of gal even though I was born and raised in Chicago. Santullo's is good, plain and simple. I come here when I want a quick bite that doesn't hurt my pocket or err plastic card... I don't carry cash. Anyways, I came here one time on a Sunday night right before they closed and one of the workers offered my boyfriend an I a whole free cheese pizza to take home because it was about to go to waste. That was the highlight of my week! It can get a little crowded on the weekends because there are so many drunks around the 5 corners but whatever. Who cares this place is good.

    (4)
  • Kitty L.

Decent thin crust pizza. I don't go there often, but when I do, I am guaranteed to be greeted with either glares or stares of indifference from the staff. Judging by other reviews, this treatment is pretty common. I'm guessing business is good, so they probably have no intention of changing.

    (2)
  • Ellen F.

Oh, Santullo's is soooo good. The only reason I am giving it four stars and not five, is because a lot of the time when I go there late night, they're playing this awful, loud, make-me-want-to-rage metal music. Really, it is bad. When I'm drunk and eating my oh-so-delicious slice of sausage pizza I want to go up to the dude at the counter and ask, "Dude, can you turn. that. down??" But, I am too busy destroying my slice. Don't get me wrong, though, Santullo's is not just good if you're sloshed. It is good all the time. Sober, drunk, high, happy, sad. Doesn't matter, Santullo's will fix you up.

    (4)
  • Kelly H.

Santullo's fills a niche for me. Whenever I get to feeling like I'm some kind of bottom-feeding hipster freak (a week in the Wisconsin Dells will do that) all I have to do is pop in here and voila, normality established. I may be weird in the Dells, but here? As I lack multiple visible piercings and full tattoo sleeves, they treat me like I just arrived from Northbrook. It's kind of refreshing. Anyway, about the food. Pizza is OK, awfully greasy, but there's a time and place for that. My main gripes with this place is that the oil-slicked slices cost a minimum of $4, which I just can't hang with. Also, as plenty of others have remarked, the wage slaves behind the counter are raising "rude" to new heights. Maybe they're going for a Weiner's Circle kind of thing? Last time I was there, the dude making the pizza was covered in open sores and picked-over scabs...and he was touching the dough with bare hands. That closed the book on Santullo's for me. Call me bourgeois, but I don't care to have a side of hepatitis with my pepperoni.

    (1)
  • Janna V.

Santullos is no Gigios but it is a close second and the location is much much easier to get to. Who the hell needs service when you are just getting a slice of pizza? the only service i need is the one that puts delicious pizza in my belly! there is the added bonus of watching people work out at cheetah while you enjoy your pizza. That can go two ways, either it racks you with guilt or you feel good knowing those poor suckas are watching you eat your pizza...either way...good for you... the delivery is pretty damn slow, but they've never messed up an order

This joint claims to make NYC-style pizza slices. As a native, I can tell you that a slice in New York does not take 10 f*cking minutes to heat up and bring out. Any place that took that long would be out of f*cking business in less time. It also does not arrive with a soggy crust made of f*cking cornbread for f*ck's sake, and generally does not taste like a f*cking salt mine. Santullo's, you can f*ck right off .

    (1)
  • Derek M.

Chicago style pizza is just too much for me. Maybe if I were a native I would have fierce stylistic loyalty to the super thick mess heralded with pride throughout the city. For me, it's just too much work. I like my pizza easy to handle. Santullo's provides me with a tasty and thin pizza that I don't have to fight while consuming. To be fair, I must note that I've only had Thee Hipster. It's a simple goat cheese and red pepper pizza that gets the job done. If one were to throw additional ingredients onto Santullo's style of pizza, I could definitely see how the sogginess factor might creep in and change the dynamic. I'd say the best bet is to stick with a low number of toppings and fold if possible. This is pizza streamlined.

I hate this place. They are the rudest bunch of A-holes I have ever come in contact with and I used to work with convicted felons. The Pizza is descent but the rest of it is less than mediocre. I got a "chicken salad" for 7 bucks that had no chicken in it. I would avoid this place.

I find Chicago-style pizza to be an abomination along the lines of genital mutilation or reality TV. I am sure a bunch of you maladjusted spastics just felt the hairs on the back of your necks prickle as you muttered, "No, no, no! He's wrong! I love my bowls of sauce topped thinly with cheese! That's how it's supposed to be!" You're certainly entitled to your opinion, and there's no accounting for taste, but I think you should know that the rest of the country shakes its communal head piteously at the Stockholm Syndrome you people seem to have developed in regards to your native pizza style, which can only be fairly called the gustatory equivalent of Adolf Hitler. So where do we pizza snots go for good bread, sauce, cheese, and fixin's? New York, stupid. So you can imagine my delight when my girlfriend alerted me to the presence of Santullo's, a Chicago eatery that essentially dares your tastebuds with the promise of New York style pizza. I was, of course, skeptical on account of the last time I ordered pizza in Chicago and ended up not so much eating it as swimming in the excess sauce. Nevertheless, I was down. Sure, Chicago, let's see how well you do when you try to play with the big boys. Folks, I'm from New York, and this, my friends, is not New York pizza. It's fine. It's perfectly adequate. There is decent sauce, acceptable bread, and something that I'm pretty sure was actually cheese. But our Empire State Building beats your penis tower any day of the week, Chicago. If this place were in Manhattan or Brooklyn, I don't know if I'd even give it a star. I'd just urinate on my monitor and stick my fingers in my mouth to replace the alleged pizza taste with the sweet savor of vomit. As it stands, this is probably the best pizza in Chicago, so that deserves some star loving.

Now, I like ass as much as the next gal -- just not usually with my pizza. But I got a large helping of both at Santullo's. One was pretty good. The other, I could have passed on. The three of us ordered a whole pizza of the day -- the hipster (ricotta and roasted red peppers). Being health-minded folks, we also got a salad. And beers, obviously, since it had been at least an hour and a half since our last drink. Everything in moderation, my friends. Then the mooning started. Some guys walked by the window, pressing their cheeks against the glass in front of a baffled group of international students seated in front of us. Priceless. The pizza came out and we recognized our error in judgment. It was the size of a monster-truck tire. It was cheesy and hot. It was good. We could only eat half of it, and this made us sad. Apparently our gluttony does, indeed, have bounds. Who knew? As we're draining our beers (something we always seem to manage) and licking the grease from our hands, a table of guys across the room clears out and my friend overhears them mention the girl in yellow -- our buxom, sunshine-dressed friend. Admirers, we assume. Said friend returns from the bathroom and the guys head outside, stopping in front of our table. Again, an ass is bared. For the record, it wasn't a very nice ass. I'd give it two stars, maybe two and a half if I'd had more to drink. Maybe three if it was bent over with a slice of Santullo's pizza on top. Mmmmm. Pizza.

Was in Wicker Park and the family was hungry for sandwiches. Thought this place looked decent and gave it a try. I got an Italian meatball sandwich and was disappointed, but I took a bite of my sister's philly and thought it was at least better than Pepperjax Grill. This place advertised itself as a sandwich place but I thought they were average and overpriced. What most people seemed to be ordering was the pizza, but if I wanted that I would go right next door to Piece.

Sometimes a girl just needs a huge slice of greasy, delicious pizza and nice cold beer to make a hot summer night even better. This was the case last night. My bf and I have a pizza tour of Chicago going on and even though I'm generally quite a health nut I can never say no to a pizza pie! Anyway, Santullo's was quick, cheap, and tasty. I left totally full, which hardly happens when eating a single slice. We went late so we missed happy hour, but from 4-6 on weekdays a slice of cheese, pepperoni, or sausage is only two dollars! Now if that's not a deal I don't know what is. I would totally recommend this place for just a quick bite or if you're craving something greasy, but not if you're looking for quality ingredients or a "healthy" pizza. I don't know about all the nay sayers, but sometimes you just gotta ignore your refined palate and enjoy a piece of Santullo's pizza pie!

    (4)
  • Christy Q.

Meh. I wanted to like this place. I dug the location, the name and even the size of the pizza itself. But the sausage looked like rodent droppings and didn't taste all that great. I know I'm in the minority here. I know most people LOVE the pizza here. It's just not my thing. The sausage was all crumbly and just reminded me of school cafeteria pizza.

The only place I've been to for NY style pizza. Regularly $4/slice for cheese, sausage and pepperoni. Add $0.50 per extra topping. I want to go M-F for their happy hour 4-6pm, it's only $2/slice. I've only bought by the slice so far. They heat up the slices for you after you order. Make sure you blot before you eat though, it's very greasy! Sausage is really good. Lots of pieces of sausage, lots of flavor. Pepperoni is okay, not enough pepperoni. I went on a Sunday and had the Meatball which was their slice of the day. My piece only had 2 small pieces of cut up meatball on it! It also had red onion & green peppers. The flavor was good, but when it's called "meatball" I expect it to have more than 2 pcs of meatball. No frills place, about 10 tables. Service is always pretty good. I've only been during the early evening (around 6-7pm) and it's usually pretty empty and quiet, but they blast the music though. Last time I was there they played the Beatles.

I seriously don't want to eat any suburban pizza except for Lou Malnati's now after trying a huge slice of cheese here.......and for only $3.25 a slice! And they are open til 3am on Sat night, what? Heck yah! :0P I thought Garibaldi's was decent, but this slice of Santullo's cheese changed my mind.......I was skeptical at how thin it was, but the quality of the ingredients, superb! Just fold er up & enjoy! Everything was great---the sauce, the cheese, & the crust---excellent flavor! And how can you beat a late-night meal for about $4? Domino's & Papa John's are "junk food pizzas". This is most definitely better!

Good, okay pizza at an okay price with horrible service. And the staff is not friendly if you look remotely gentrified. If you're slingin' some sweet tat sleeves and more than one piercing on your face you'll be adored by the staff. If you're not --good luck getting any service. The peope who work here would be taken out by thier shirt collars by the FDA if they saw them -- and the tables and floor are NEVER clean. Other than that, dig in because your options are limited this time of night. Unless you want to pick up hookers at Flash Taco down the road.

Everything pizza should be - big, floppy, I-know-it-may-sound-gross-but-greasy, and SOLD BY THE SLICE. Buh-bye you stinky party slices- at Santullo's the big boys come out to play! I am not a huge New York fan (Ick! the Yankees? The Giants? Pretension?) but I will give them props for their floppy, flat pizza. Find me here chowing down on a big piece of pepperoni when I need my pizza fix. I do love love Piece but hate their 2 hour weekend waits - Santullo's is a great fall back plan. Good thing I don't live in the WP because it would be hello, 'roni butt!
