I encourage you to try Sam's Chicken and Ribs best-kept secret- the Chicken Philly- The chicken version of the Philly Cheese Steak. For some reason the Chicken Philly is not visible on the Daily special's menu but it costs the same as the Philly Cheese Steak and it's this is the best sandwich I have ever had! and it only costs $7. It comes with delicious freshly cut homemade fries. It is grilled peppered thinly sliced and cut-up chicken, mozzarella cheese, grilled onion, grilled green pepper, and grilled mushrooms on a 6-inch bun. I normally get mine without mushrooms, with an extra slice of cheese (25 cents), and with the chicken well done and since then it always tastes perfect. It takes about 10-15 mins to make so call ahead of time. I've been eating this here and at CJ's Grill (its sister restaurant) regularly for 3+ years now, and now I've got my friends hooked. Staff is very friendly in the evening/night. I dont like the lunchtime guy as much- but he's friendly to the Spanish-speaking customers. If you come here then you need to have their chicken philly with fries. I dont know why it is not on the menu there but everyone I know who has had it always comes back for it. I get mine well done, no mushrooms, with extra cheese. Best sandwich I've ever had.

I am a very regular customer (dozens of orders) and I have really tried to be patient. From the first order, months ago, they are constantly forgetting things like sauces and condiments. OK, no big deal. I want to love the place because it is something like 3 blocks from my place and pretty reasonably priced. Most of the time they don't have soda in two liter bottles, which I am not really sure how hard it is to keep in stock, but OK. No big thing, right? Much of the last month they have been out of italian and BBQ beef. Again, not sure how you run out, but OK. Last few orders, it seems like we haven't been getting proper delivery change. OK, small thing. Today, the same guy I have placed literally fifty orders with in the past is particularly snarly. It takes 50 minutes to deliver two cheeseburgers and fries three blocks, and everything is cold when it arrives. The burgers are shoeleather and COLD. Done and done. The owner of this place should sublet it to someone who is competent.

Sam's is where I go when the McDonald's is just too far to go for a cheese burger. I try not to spend too much time in the place cuz its none too clean, and no one seems to wear gloves. And while the offer delivery, there is hardly ever a guy willing or able to walk my food and grease a block and a half to my apt. Maybe if I drank more I'd find this place more appealing.

I had a combo with hot peppers. The beef was alright. I dont mind some gyro meat. The sausage was so old and nasty I took one bite and threw it out. The hot peppers were not crisp like they had been sitting out for ever. Sam's needs to get its act together before any serious competition for Chicago slop shop moves into the Granville/Red Line stop area. The fries everyone was raving about? Limp, near tasteless except for an excessive amount of salt. In a city that has duck fat fries, and up market hamburger joints around every corner, you have to at least try on the fries. Quantity doesn't equal quality. They had a tub of them under the counter and do look fresh-cut, but something just isn't working. The new brick facade coming on this place isn't going to help you feel any better about eating such a poor example of Chicago "slop shop" style food. If you say you are serving Vienna beef products, again uphold some dayumn standards puhhhleaze!!

Give me that greasy bag of fries! If you step inside this establishment and walk out with anything, please make sure you get at least their fresh-cut FRENCH FRIES. I have never had a more tastier set of greasy potatoes in my life. Believe it or not, they serve them in a greasy see-thru paper bag - which is fine by me.

    (5)
  • Jenna N.

This is the only place I know of that gives you a big paper bag of fries, wrapped in a plastic bag because the grease has totally soaked through. Even the pizza puffs are wrapped in a little paper pouch, put into a paper bag that's wrapped in a plastic bag because of all the grease. Hell, you'll probably gain 10 pounds just by opening the door and walking into the place because it just oozes grease. But that's when you know it's gooooood.

  • Kate W.

Oh Sam's... I never know when you're going to be open, but that's just part of your charm. You've always been there for me though with your greasy food and a mountain of fries with faux cheese on top... for only $3.50. What surprised me most about this place is that the fries are actual fries, cut from real potatoes. None of that frozen crap thrown into the deep fryer for me! Nothing here is good for you but really who cares at 1am after a night of drinking??

  • Darren F.

so Ive decided to come pay a visit since i haven't eaten here in a long while.. they are not the same anymore.. the BBQ sauce is more bland, fries are greasier then ever, and the place is dirty .. dint think i will come back anymore since there are much better places around to eat at.

Wonderful rib tips and hand cut fries!

    (4)
  • Troy H.

Look, y'all may not enjoy 2 pounds of rib tips served under a bed of fries for $11, but I do. It's clean-ish, it's cheap, and it's good. I have no problem with Sams. And they're open late.

    (4)
  • Renee L.

Hits the spot for greasy food cravings. I have to mention in my review that the fries are to die for...I don't know what they do to make them so delicious but try them, you will not be disappointed! I like the grilled chicken pita. My only complaint is that it does take a while to get the food, for a fast food establishment. But that may be a good thing because it shows the food is made on the spot.

  • Bill M.

Sam's is the ultimate in greasy food. If you order a six piece chicken wing meal for lunch, you won't have to eat for the rest of the day. Order a gyro cheeseburger and eat it in front of a mirror so that you can SEE the expression on your face as you taste the exploding flavor in your mouth. Try to eat one of the massive gyros in one sitting. I dare you. Feel your sinuses clear out as you wolf down a BBQ Beef sandwich. Best fries in the city. The only mediocre thing I've ever had at this place was a Philly Cheese Steak well over three years ago, and I don't even like those very much. It's not the fastest place in the world but quality takes time. Sam's is heaven.

  • Lisa S.

Disgusting, bone-dry rancid, inedible rib tips, free of bbq sauce.. Shriveled, dry and crumbling "hot links". Soggy, grease laden, limp cold fires. all served in a jumbled up mess. Delivered ice cold an hour and a half after I placed my order. All sent directly to the garbage, which was an insult to the garbage

    (1)
  • Frank D.

The good - Lots of meaty ribs The bad - Bland sauce, soggy fries more like mashed The ugly - Price for a full slab was $6 MORE than on the web menu

    (2)
  • Greg M.

I went here again over the weekend and I have to say the rib sandwich is pretty stellar. Along with their fries covered in salt and using the in house bbq sauce to dip them in. Wow, I need another round now.

Right next to the Red Line (And by extension Gino's) Sam's is one of the few places I've found in Edgewater to get greasy, alcohol absorbing food. Coming from upstate NY, I've gotten accustomed to the "Garbage Plate" to do this (Look it up, it's glorious) but just about any of Sam's meals do the trick. Granted, it's not the quickest place to get food, so you might actually have to *gasp* wait around and chat with your fellow customers for a couple of minutes. Also, the prices at Sam's are ridiculous. I'm talking get lunch with the change you found in your couch cheap.

Famished after a day of moving furniture from one apartment to another, my cousin and I walked into Sam's -- the only restaurant on Granville that was still open at midnight -- and got ourselves a full slab of ribs, chicken wings, fries and a side of cheese. Although we were the only dine-in customers (pick-ups and deliveries were still quite popular that time of night), we had to wait about 20 minutes for our order...hungry as we were, the wait seemed like the longest 20 minutes ever. Good thing the owner -- who juggled many hats: cook, cashier, bus boy -- and his Man Friday had amusing stories to share. After what seemed to be an eternity, our dinner was finally ready! The huge slab o' ribs was definitely worth more than the $14 we paid!! The chicken wings were crisped just right. Overall, the meal was perhaps one of the biggest and best midnight "snacks" we've ever had!!! I've gone back a number of times since and just like the first time, I've always had to wait longer than I would have wanted to...Some customers lose patience and walk out, but there are more of those who, like me, know that patience is a GREAT virtue especially if it means being rewarded with a great meal of (inexpensive) tender, juicy ribs! PS: the owner just hired more people so service might improve in the coming weeks...

very flavorful fried chicken. catfish was a little tough. great creamy cole slaw. bbq rib ok, but a little one dimensional. excellent fries, greasy and crispy, best part of the meal. gyros plate is very satisfactory.

I went here a couple of times while I was at Loyola. Pretty good greasy, fried chicken at really reasonable prices. And they have a good sized menu, including snacks and desserts. On a student budget, it was great place to get a yummy meal. Haven't been here since -- but still looks like it remains the same!

I ordered the 10 piece buffalo wing dinner that came with a side of fries and bread. They have a spicy or bbq option for their buffalo wings and I chose bbq. The wings left much to be desired. The bbq sauce smelled like a dirty wash cloth and tasted even worse. I managed one bite before throwing the rest away. Moreover they messed up my order even after I asked them not once but twice while I was waiting for my food. The fries were mediocre at best. When I walked in there were fries sitting under the heat lamp that they mix in with the new batch instead of just cooking smaller amounts for the order. They were somewhat crispy to bite into but the center of the fries was consistently mushy and soggy. The bread was just 2 slices of regular bread. I don't know why the even bother with this. They should do a biscuit or something else. They packed the bread with the fries and wings so it was soggy before I even had a chance to eat it. This too was thrown away. All around gross and disappointing. The interior and the lack of customer service should have been a sign.

  • Trang V.

The only place around Granville Ave that is open extremely late. If you have the late night munchies and have no other options then it's not so bad. Can't beat the hotdog, fries, and soda pop special!

    (2)
  • Crowbar T.

I found a penny in my french fries. I stiil ate all my food because I was hungry and we weren't going to walk back. The food was and had been good up to that point. We had eaten there several times. Won't be going back though.

    (1)
  • J R.

Nasty! Nasty! I've tried this place twice & this past Sunday was the last time I'd go here. French fries are under cooked, cheeseburger super dry (this tells me they are either using old beef or just throwing frozen patties on grill), Gyros - burnt and dry ( again tells me this meat has been sitting around for awhile). I have to say the onion rings are awesome! Like old dry meat, this is the place for you! I should of went back and demanded a refund.

    (1)
  • Kyle H.

Cheap food. Large portions but the quality is exactly what you pay for. I suggest sticking with the ribs or chicken. The fish(if you can call it that) was one of the worst things I have ever eaten. Staff is friendly every time we are in there so the sketch interior is something I can get over

  • Matt S.

Crappy food and even crappier service. Ordered from this place on grubhub. Have ordered from there before. Food was mediocre to bad but it was the only place open. Had to cancel the order and immediately called back. They said I had to cancel through grubhub. Fair enough. Called grubhub and the wait was longer than it was going to take to pick up the food so just let it go. Went in to pick up the food and the restaurant cancelled the order already even though the order was never cancelled though grubhub. They also refused to complete the order once we showed up. It was completely ridiculous. I'll never go back or order again. I honestly don't expect great service or food from a place like this, but the food and service I received was even lower than even my level of expectation.

    (1)
  • Jayne F.

Downgraded to 2 stars, after several disappointing orders in a row. They've changed their chicken recipe, and delivery keeps getting slower and slower. May use them for rib tips in the future, but that's about it.

    (2)
  • Channy F.

My first time here and I tried the bbq wings and I was surprised, they were awesome! The sauce was just good, the only thing I didn't appreciate was the bbq sauce police. If I want my sauce dripping down my arms, give me more sauce.

    (4)
  • Marcee W.

Great, greasy rib tips. Fries and tips are soaked in yummy bar-b-que sauce that's finger lickin' good. Reasonable prices, street/meter parking. Don't plan to eat in though. No ambience and neighborhood is still a little dicey, especially at night.

    (4)
  • Kevin W.

BBQ chicken is so tangy and good. I eat it so quickly that my mouth goes a little numb. The BBQ is so damn good that Sam's should be a destination just for it. Regular American fair is OK. Get the BBQ. They also have yummy Somosas and Indian food. Overall, the BBQ is killer...destination BBQ joint, but they don't advertise it enough. They should have a big sign: BBQ SPECIALITY DINNER $6.99!! I mostly see other patrons getting their other mediocre american food though, hence the average ratings I guess.

  • Lauren B.

Uhhhhh! Hello!? I work in the neighborhood, so I wanted to grab a quick bite. I walked by at 1115 yesterday, doors were closed, chairs on tables- clearly closed, they're supposed to open at 11. Today I walked in, and saw no one- stood there for 10 min- wasting my lunch break mind you, and no one appeared to help me. I left, so I can't comment on the food. But, if that's how they run business... I can assume they won't be around long.

I will never eat at Sam's again. Upon moving to Edgewater, I heard some pretty bad things about the place, but I wanted to check it out for myself. The first couple of times I went to Sam's I ordered the cheesy beef which is pretty much like an Italian beef only it's loaded with cheese. Anyway... So I ordered that and it came with fries and I mean how could you mess that up? The food was decent enough. Nothing to write home about, but it got me through. The last time I went to Sam's I was feeling adventurous so I decided to order the 6pc chicken dinner which comes with fries and bread. First complaint: I didn't get bread with my meal. Second complaint: those chicken wings smelled and tastes horrible!!!! It smelled like it had been fried in week old grease!! I have never smelled anything like that! I mean I'm not familiar with the rules in changing the grease food is fried in, but I am positive Sam's does not change their grease often enough! Fried chicken, in my opinion usually smells delicious and mouthwatering... Sam's fried chicken however smells like I lost a bad bet. Never again.

  • Joe P.

There's usually a restaurant trade-off in A-OK places: either it's damn good, and small portions, or the flip. Sam's is definitely the flip. Many of their dishes are HUGE, but just A-OK. It's decent if you have some sort of inebriated toxin in your blood driving your hunger for this late night, never-sober, spot.

Food four stars, atmosphere two. I stopped in today for a gyros plate. They did the thing they said they wouldn't do, they substituted and left the fries out. But they still included a large pita. The gyros portion was large and plentiful, the sauce good quality and adequate, the salad with onions and lettuce and tomato fresh. Happy camper here. No complaints, right? For take out this would have been perfect. Then the homeless guy came in. He was a very meek homeless guy. He asked a few of the people if they would help him out. I finally looked at him and offered him my untouched pita and some salad, as I was almost done. He didn't want it. I asked him again, since he was asking people for food. He didn't get it. The guys behind the counter didn't do anything about this guy or ask him to head out or give him some left over food or anything. At one point they asked if he wanted to order and he said no. Who just lets a homeless guy come in and linger over the sitting paid customers for 10-15 minutes at a time. And still lets him linger after he's been offered food by me and a few other patrons? I'm sorry but that's just bad form. But I'll be back for the carry out. Decent value. Indian food looked good too.

    (3)
  • Lord Of T.

They goofed up my order, brought the wrong things..... but the quality was good enough. It is not great, but not bad. I'm looking forward to trying some of their Indian food.

  • Dave K.

I had the lamb biryani for a late dinner, and it was quite the bountiful portion!! The rice and lamb chunks were quite tender and delicious, and at a great price too. You can make this into two meals if you do not eat very much. Sam is located right by the Granville stop on the Red Line, if you sit in the right position you can watch the trains arriving and departing. They have a very large selection and a wide variety of dishes to try. No nonsense, Good guys, good food, good prices.

  • Tian Y.

Drunk food open late (4am everyday) near where I live now... extremely dangerous for my health. If you're coming off the Granville el stop at 3am and starving and too tired to find food, Sam's is literally staring at you in the face waiting to rescue you... with fried chicken wings. The menu covers most late night greasy drunk food, and if the Loyola student clientele I've seen in here is any indication... it's pretty reliable drunk food. Cheeseburgers, chicken sandwiches, hot dogs, tacos, indian food... If I go now, I opt for the 4 fried chicken wings, which are small whole wings that come with fries and bread and hot sauce. They have buffalo wings (which is what I thought these were) too these chicken wings are my go to order here now (but jeeze, the fact that I even repeatedly come here...) I've tried the Indian side of the menu as well, and I'll say that its definitely a harder kind of late night food to do well. Dry reheated tandoori chicken is typical. This ain't 24/7 ghareeb nawaz here. Staff is friendly too! Good stuff. 3.5

    (3)
  • Jonathan L.

Oh Sam's. You aren't the restaurant we always want, but the one we deserve. You are THE drunk food stop off Granville. For a place specializing in fried foods and open till around 4 am, you do it right. I hope you are a part of the community for many many more years. The food? It's just okay. It's what you'd expect. The prices are cheap and though it may be slow, the staff is nice.

    (4)
  • Angel G.

Don't get the polish. It sucks. It's not Vienna beef polish. Too small to be similar to a maxwell street polish. Get the two hot dogs for same price. The polish is the size of a hot dog with same toppings. Everything else seems ok.

    (4)
  • Fred H.

I look at the walls, lined with perhaps the most diverse menu to be found anywhere; chicken & ribs, Italian beef, cheesesteaks, Mexican, Indian, just LOL! It's run by Indians, & they're nice guys. The ambience is a bit rough, but it's satisfied my need for late night grub. I've always gotten the lb. of ribtips. Served w/slice of white bread, proper Chicago style, & fries, which are actually quite decent, thicker w/skin. I've seen a colorful assortment of night people here, from groups of Loyola students to street people. I've got no complaints, it's straight up Chi style late night!

    (4)
  • J M.

The only place open really late with so many choices. Nice guys, freezing cold soda, good greasy food, and 99¢ for a giant cheese cup to dip it all in! The Indian food is really good too of you don't want the greasy goods. The pizza puff is the perfect midnight snack... Mmmmm

    (5)
  • Shelley L.

Great wings and fries. Large assortment and variety of food to choose from at fair prices. Just don't get the jalapeño poppers - they look like they're heated up from those frozen batches you can get at your local grocery store.

  • Tabitha P.

I ordered from this place last night and now that I'm awake and not feeling well. It was a very bad idea. I got rice, chicken Marsala and naan. The only good part was the naan. I woke up with stomach problems and now I'm laying in bed and I have to miss work. The rice was frozen and reheated and so was the chicken Marsala. I don't think I'll be going back to this place. The food was really greasy and the just not good.

  • Samuel B.

Good food and good service, when you're in the mood for something greasy. They are open late which is a plus, just don't order delivery, you might get your food cold.

    (4)
  • Steph A.

So greasy and pretty good! Very fast food and good for the price. I got a double cheeseburger and fries with a cup of cheese sauce and it was more than enough food for me. My boyfriend got the rib tips and wings and they were very good as well! For both of us it costed $23 which wasn't too bad! And we are completely stuffed. I'd recommend a visit to Sam's

    (4)
  • Paul M.

Sam's is the place I go when I have a craving for fast food redline style. No complaints.

    (4)
  • Lito G.

This place only survives because of the after 2am drunk crowd who don't care about the food and the service. The manager was rude and obnoxious when there was a confusion with the order. I have been there before and I always thought the food was just not worth the price you pay. Theres a reasons why it's cheap. There's a better place around that better without that rudeness. I'm never going back!

    (2)
  • Steve Y.

This place is great if you don't mind the drunk college kids at night. The gyro cheeseburger is the way to go. They are always friendly. Overall not a date spot but if you need a good greasy food joint to fill you up its pretty good.

Great people. Great food. Not the healthiest but great nonetheless. Chi-dogs and wings are the best!

  • Daniel D.

I can't speak for the BBQ side of this place but their Indian food is amazing! I highly recommend the lamb biryani, and their curries and tandoori are good as well. Also try the samosas. And of course, being able to get all of this at 2 AM is the extra feather in Sam's cap. I have only gotten delivery, and as far as timing, they have stuck to their provided estimates in my experience.

    (5)
  • Karolina S.

This place is gross. The rib tips are okay, enough to merit two stars. Orders bring two pieces of soggy bread and absolutely horrid French fries. I ordered a chicken burrito and got a grilled chicken wrap. Kinda happy since I'm trying to be a little healthier... I prefer Buffalo Joe's.

    (2)
  • Derrick L.

I enjoyed that it was open late I stop by there after I got off work. I got the mozzarella sticks that were pretty good. If you need a late night snack I would recommend this place. They do have an extensive menu.

  • Erini S.

I've ordered from Sam's Chicken & Ribs a handful of times now. It was my go-to greasy comfort food place. And had I written a review then, you'd see at least 2 more stars. I generally get the fried cauliflower, cheese sauce, and a bacon cheeseburger. It's really the fried cauliflower that's sold me on Sam's. I've gotten chicken wings, and buffalo wings as well... they were good, not crazy amazing. So I stuck with my staples. However, the last two times I've ordered from them have just been disappointing. I'm a 5 minute drive from Sam's. So you'd think my food would be still somewhat hot when it arrives. Not the case. Sad, soggy fries. Tepid burger. There's so much grease dripping from the bag they're packed in. I've walked from Five Guys with a burger and fries without them getting soggy or cold. That's a 10+ minute walk. If I'm walking my Sam's and get a craving, I might still go in. But I think I'm done with their delivery.

I have been coming here for the food and friendly people for years. I moved out of the neighborhood but always come back just for awesome rip tips. Also this is THE PLACE to try Indian food if you haven't before. I was hesitant to try but now I love it. First timers try -Curry chicken with rice, garlic nan and my favorite samosa.

Delicious and cheap!! This is a go-to spot for my husband and I. The food is so good and the staff is friendly and fast. Call ahead if you don't want to wait long!

Im trying to find something good to write about this place, maybe I need to eat other stuff there but I JUST ordered from here an hour ago, got my food 20 mins later and just got home 10 minutes ago. I ordered the 1lb rib tips + 2 PC chicken special. The Styrofoam container they put it in isn't divided up so it was the rib tips that were quite juicy (which is one good thing) covered the bottom, the 2 pieces of chicken were stuck together so it was literally, one big chicken ball on top of the ribs and the fries were sprinkled on top and soggy from the juice. I was hopefully going to eat the chicken without rib juice on it but that wasn't an option. That stuff wasn't a big issue if the rib tips were good, but that's where it really went down hill.. Almost every piece of rib tip I ate had like, this hard cartilage in the mean so I could almost not chew threw it without really trying and a harsh crunching to it. Actually one piece I hate had a big crunch to it, I took it out and it was actually a long piece of bone. I've gone through just about every piece since I'm hungry, have been working all day and they're a 20 minute drive away and I've had to spit out all but 5 pieces that were ok to chew. This is out of 16 pieces for a meal that cost $10. So mostly inedible rib tips, soggy fries because they won't get the Styrofoam containers with dividers and a clump of chicken now covered in the rib sauce that I didn't want on the chicken .. I'll try them again soon but I'll maybe just order some basic fried chicken or something.

Placed a delivery order at 4:57 pm today. The man on the phone told me 30 minutes. I called at 5:45 and he stated the delivery man was on the way. I live approximately a mile away and 5 to 15 minutes ride depending on street traffic. It is 6:04 and I am still waiting. Will update when food actually gets here and review on that. So far they've gotten a 1 star. ***Update*** SERVICE: Food was delivered at 6:22pm. I asked the delivery guy how cold must my food be since he left 45 minutes ago to deliver it. I felt the bag and opened the food and it was still warm. The delivery man stated that he just picked up the food and came here right away....whatever. Had to tip the man anyway, it wasn't his fault. FOOD: For waiting 1 1/2 hours for my food, i wouldn't say it was worth the wait. ordered 4 wings with mild sauce on the side and 1lb rib and 3 wings. The wings were not as flavorful as I'm used to, but being doused in BBQ sauce, they did the job. The rib tip and wings combo was covered with bbq sauce and fries thrown over it. Fries were somewhat soggy from the being in the container and the sauce. They were a bit to the salty side, but I'm into to more salt anyway. The rib tips were ok....could not be compared to a place like Famous Dave's. They were cut really really small and at least a quarter had more cartilage than meat. Probably will not order again. The sauce is more towards the sweet side than tangy, which i like. The 4 wings not doused in sauce was ok. My brother liked it. His fries were crispier and mild sauce was good, more tangy. A hungry teenage boy enjoyed. Overall I'll give them 3 stars. If service was what they stated it, maybe 4 stars.

Sorry I didn't try this place sooner. Love their chicken legs --which are drumsticks and HUGE! Terrific fries. Gyros and tips are good, too, but the chicken and fries are our favorites. Have not encountered any problems with delivery.
