Fast food version of Red Robin. Everything was good but not great, especially when comparing the prices, quality and quantity of food to both their full service restaurants or even to their competitors. Location is convenient.

Pretty good. Quick. Smaller portions and no endless fries like the regular red robins but slightly cheaper to account for it.

First day & they have a bunch of kinks to work out. I don't know why Red Robin had to choose this concept for this location since there are already a number of fast food sandwich places within a two-block radius, but it's essentially a small hamburger/chick sandwich place that has little, if any, resemblance to Red Robin restaurants. So many reasons this place doesn't remind me of a Red Robin, the biggest were the too-salty fries (not bottomless, as you'd find at Red Robin restaurants), and the side of onion rings--all six of them--weren't worth the additional $2.49. In fact, my meal: A rather bland chicken sandwich, refillable soda, a little cup of fries and those six, count them, six, onion rings, came to $15.43! They took off $2.49 after I mentioned they rang up everything separately instead of giving me the "combo" that the cashier asked if I wanted when I placed the order (which, by the way, doesn't even appear anywhere on their menus). OK, no big deal, but $12.67 is still way overpriced.

I was intrigued when I heard and read Red Robin had a restaurant in the Loop area. I really didn't know to much about this fast food restaurant. I finally found the restaurant, which is just south of Michigan Avenue and Wacker Drive. The restaurant is on the smaller size but set up very well with various sizes of tables. After reviewing the menu, Dwight took my order and was very nice. He gave me my table number then instructed me to take a seat and someone will deliver my meal. My meal, Bacon Cheese Burger with fries and Strawberry Shake, was delivered to me within a reasonable about of time. The food was prepared just right - not bland. The burgers are large and the fries were seasoned okay. The shake was so good and thick. As I'm eating, I was observing the management and the employees and they seem they really enjoyed working there and amongst each other. KUDOS. I would recommend and return to this fast food restaurant.

I ordered the bacon cheeseburger with cheddar and fries. The burger patty is fairly large (larger than anything you would order from McD's or BK). It wasn't dried out, bacon was really good (again better than any bacon from the above places). The burger is topped with lettuce, tomato, mayo, ketchup. There was slightly too much mayo, but it was still edible. I was disappointed with the fries. They were just ok. They are sprinkled with a seasoning mixture. This location is fairly small. I received the fries free with a coupon and my total was $7 and change. For the lighter side the menu offers salads, portabella sandwich, and garden veggie patty. Overall, burgers are a step above McD's and BK.

Went again today. Branched out from the burger and got the Whiskey River BBQ Chicken Wrap. It was delicious and seemed to be a reasonable healthy option (ask for less cheese if you want it healthier). Sauce was tasty and when eaten fresh and warm it was simply amazing. Service was also top notch, didn't even have to clean the table (although we were about to anyway). I wasn't impressed at the restaurant at first, but it is growing on me a little each time I go.

Red Robin's Burger Works is sort of a "mini" Red Robin. This is a fairly new spot on Michigan Avenue just south of the Chicago River, and its quiet storefront can be easy to miss. It's not a huge place, but the service is relatively quick and friendly. You order off the menu, and are given a numbered sign to place on a table. It ain't cheap, but this place is a solid choice for a filling meal that is like a "treat" for your stomach. Each time I have been here, I ate a burger, a side item, and a shake. The burger that I like the best (so far) is the Whiskey River BBQ burger, a messy and hefty but tasty pile of two burger patties, fried onion straws, cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato, and mayo. The mushroom burger is pretty good with swiss cheese. The bacon cheeseburger was fine but not all that memorable. Of the side items, I like the sweet potato fries a bit more than the onion rings. The steak fries are not bad but not as exciting as the sweet potato fries (comes with Thai chili ketchup) or the onion rings (with some sort of a zingy ringy dip). I really like the mint brownie shake, though the last time I had it the bottom was almost too decadently loaded with chocolate chunks (definitely need a spoon to finish it off). The salted caramel shake is pretty darn good too. I can imagine myself coming here for a shake if I am in the area and need a quick dessert fix.

I got the bacon guacamole burger which I liked, with a side of fries and a mint brownie milk shake which was amazing, the service was also very quick, my only complaint was fries don't come with any burgers except one, so I ended up spending more than I expected, but the food was good so I'd go back, maybe just not regularly for money's sake

Always was a fan of Red Robin in the burbs, now that they've got an express place in town, I can get my fix without having to drive to Skokie. Very impressed with the staff, selection, service and cleanliness of this place. I hope it stays that way for a long time. What makes this place unique is you can get any "sandwich" on the board with either a burger, turkey burger, grilled chicken and I think veggie burger. So no need to feel weird like you're asking them to do something out of the ordinary. Custom orders are their thing. Fires were also solid, nice and crispy and a generous portion. I actually shared an order with my wife and that was more than enough for two people. Offerings run the gamut from the good old fashioned cheeseburger to the Hawaiian style with pineapple and bbq sauce. I had that with grilled chicken and it was outstanding! Ironically this place is right next door to McDonalds so my fear is people are going to see the "2 for $3 Big Mac's" sign and go there instead of here as this place while not expensive, is more than the fast food place. But when you think about the grossness that Mickey D's is slinging for those prices versus the quality you get here, it's a no brainer. Hit the Burger Works and skip the golden arches. You won't regret it!

Not sure how I feel about this place. Friendly staff when you walk in, but they bombard you with questions when I just want to read the menu. I felt pretty rushed and there was no one behind me. The manager was nice to me but was micromanaging the employees and on one of the cooks for wasting an ounce of lettuce. I get it, waste is lost money...but don't skimp on the toppings of my burger either! I took my burger to go since I had to get back to the office. Upon opening my bag I was a little surprised to find a styrofoam container as the packaging, most "gourmet" burger joints seems to focus on being ecofriendly. I dove right into the burger, it hit the spot but I was a little disappointed. Nothing very gourmet about their gourmet burger. Quality bun, cheese and pickles are what usually stand out on a "gourmet" burger and these kind of missed the mark.

MMM. Oh my. Mmmmm. This is tasty. Mmm. The patty flavor reminds me of Burger King. And, since I had the cook slap THREE patties on my burger, you know I speak with mouthful of experience. Smooth, melty American cheese and fresh-tasting bun, too. The menu is pretty complex for simple folk like me who just want to order a burger. So, I got the Tavern Burger with the aforementioned extra cow added. Fries? Fresh, crisp and tasty. Onion rings? A little overpriced for the seven rings I got. Would pass on those. The best part of all? This location opens at 10 a.m., meaning I don't have to wait until 11 o'clock when I want a burger breakfast--which happens quite a bit. Never a wait or a crowd when I've showed up before 11. I have to guess that it gets packed a lunch time though--and there ain't no space for too many bodies in this little nook.

If you are famished and for some reason you cant even make it across the street to other side of state street and Chicago Avenue, you have hit a new neighborhood gem. This is a very exciting corner of town if you can call people getting into fights at the McDonalds, people who have not been arrested yet at the Chicago L Station, If you never get enough of cracked out people at 1AM making a fool out of themselves exciting. I had some type of chicken wrap yesterday that was very tasty. If you are looking to pay your bill at the AT&T store, too bad!!!. At least you can get good food out of it. Maybe they can change locations to somewhere that is not competing with all this "action" on the street. I will be coming back during daylight hours

Needed some grease and salt to help kick the effects from last night and thought I'd give RR a shot. I have never been here and with all the great choices in Chi I won't be in any hurry to go back. Service was quick. Burger worked well with the toppings, but I think if it wasn't for the toppings the burger would be flat by itself. Had the Fire Roasted Jalepeno Burger. Got a little messy by the time I was done. Fries were good, but needed S&P. Small place though so should be interested if this place does good, with how they handle people stalking tables. The do have a patio though. This place solved my need and I can say I have been there. I will go back for a milkshake sometime.

Wanted to try a burger... Walked in at 9:10pm - guy @ register on phone, obviously reporting days business to someone... People in kitchen looked mildly uncomfortable that I'd been waiting 2-3+ minutes... I asked the group, "you still open?" Guy on phone glanced up, held up a "wait a minute " finger... I waited a few more minutes - looked pleadingly at the back... Then left. Would have LOVED to have tried a burger. Thanks for understanding... Sincerely, Steve

At a conference in town. Needed something quick for lunch. Eat many times at red robin in Washington so I saw one near by and thought I would give it a try. Found out it was a red robin express. Red robin name and food much quicker. Sounded good to me. Ordered the Tavern Double with fries for $8. Plus a Freckled Lemonade. Good deal for lunch. No seats inside due to so many people at conferences, or could be a daily occurrence in down town Chicago. They made my lemonade and then cleared my order off the screen. After patiently waiting for 5 min and hearing them ask were this extra burger went, I told them it was mine. Burger was sloppily made and a little greasy but tasted good for the time and price.

Just left this Red Robin location, and being a first time customer at this establishment, overall it was a huge disappointment. Gourmet burgers? I don't think so. Mine is so dry it is like a hockey puck; edges of the wheat bun are hard. I asked for lettuce, tomato, cheese only with mayo on the side, no fries. Also, I ordered online before coming, but the rude woman at the register didn't seem to know which order was mine! As a result, I received: A burger with onions, pickles, relish of some type (yuk) and no mayo on the side. OH and I got fries, of which I did not even order - I was told to "keep em"... WIll not be going back to a Red Robin again - hell, I'll go to Wendy's before I come back here! Oh well I gave it the old "college try".

Nice little place to go and get a burger. Tried the bacon cheeseburger and chicken wraps. Burger was cooked medium well, but chicken wraps were excellent. The lady who took our order was curt, and she gave us fries only on one order, even though we had ordered a basket. However, the manager offered us a free basket of yummy steak fries afterwards to clear up the issue. Bathrooms in good condition. All in all, I would return, next time for a milkshake. :)

So this was my third time to this location. I gotta say, I'm a fan. I've tried a different burger each time and wasn't let down once. I've tried the chili burger and most recently the guacamole buger. A step up from mcdonald's and bk, no doubt. They got my order in quickly, and it came back accurately. I forgot to order fries and the cashier was happy to give me a complimentary order. That has never happened before, anywhere. It's a small but meaningful gesture. Their employees have the right attitude there. They have great customer service. They don't yet accept the royalty program here yet as they have the the full red robins, but they started their own punch card; buy 9 get the 10th free. I would recommend this for anyone who wants a quick burger. Eat in or take out. You can even order it online so it'll be ready when you get there. You can't beat that with a bat. Eat happy and be well!

They don't listen to your order very well. I asked for no cheese and i got my burger with cheese. I told her no cheese she took it back and the manager came back with a smaller burger and with an attitude. Over all I don't recommend.

I give this restaurant a couple stars for the AWESOME-tasting food - just like you would experience at a typical Red Robin. I'm removing 3 stars for the horrible customer service, long wait-times (even when no one else is in the restaurant except me), lack of Red Robin loyalty points, lack of the staple "unlimited fries" option, and the denial of accepting a Red Robin gift card! I stopped in here not long ago, early evening, to check out this seemingly "Red Robin Express" of sorts. The food menu was understandably condensed (compared to a full-fledged Red Robin) but not to worry! There were still plenty of options to meet my hunger needs. I ordered a burger and some fries. I asked about the "unlimited refills" since I didn't see it advertised anywhere. They said they don't offer that at "Burger Works" because it's not a "real" Red Robin. I shrugged and ordered the fries anyway. Offering unlimited fries helps define "Red Robin" for what it is - but I'm hungry and I'll let it slide. I was a bit bummed though for the price I was paying for those fries... I then asked about claiming my Red Robin Royalty points for a free burger. They said they don't accept those rewards here, nor does my order count towards anything in the future. "Ok" I think, "this is just how an 'express' Red Robin works I guess." So then I proceed to pay with a Red Robin gift card. Again, they say they don't accept those. "Wow" I say to the person at the register. "You don't even accept your own gift cards?!" Well I pull out my credit card and pay anyway since I've already committed myself and am anticipating this burger! So then I wait.....and wait...and wait....and did I mention I'm the ONLY customer in the store? Another customer comes in about 20 minutes after I order and I STILL haven't received my food by this point. Yeah I wasn't too happy. I received it about 25 minutes after ordering, downed my burger, emailed Red Robin to express my disappointment, then decided to Yelp about it too. Don't get my wrong- I understand there are limits to "express joints" - but these things were all contradictory to what Red Robin stands for.

New lunch spot on Mich Ave I work nearby so this is a good thing for me as there are limited lunch options in the area as far as something quick goes I was on my way to Naf Naf Grill which is next door and I saw someone hanging out of the door of this place saying come on in. I was intrigued. Walked in and was welcome to a lot of friendliness which is great. The girl @ the counter was very helpful in helping me choose a burger. I went with the Whiskey River BBQ Burger which has the signature bourbon BBQ sauce along with american cheese, onion straws, lettuce, tomato and mayo. Very juicy patty with much flavor. BBQ sauce is awesome. I got the sweet potato fries which were good and they came with thai chili ketchup which was not as good as I thought it would be. the fries were better without it actually. I normally don't do burgers for lunch too often but this place will be near the top of my mind when I have that craving.

Astonishly mediocre. $7.49 for an allegedly medium-rare burger the patty of which was at most 1/4" thick (and cooked medium). No way that the parent Red Robin chain could be serving such a bland, tasteless product.

  • Justin B.

Stopped by for the Salted Caramel shake today; pretty solid. Well spun, a little too salty but otherwise tasty. Prices are very fair at this location; they are definitely lower than the sit-down restaurant chain of the same name. Great for a quick meal in-between dodging tourists!

***This review is for the 20 E Chicago location*** Went here today to try out the newest lunch spot in the area. The cashier asked if I wanted a combo with my burger. The "combo" ended up being the regular price for fries and drinks, which I thought was pretty misleading (she should have just asked if I wanted to add on fries and a drink instead of calling it the combo meal). Sorry, but $14 for a sandwich, fries and drink at a fast food restaurant is absurd. Food was okay, but nothing that I'll be dreaming about coming back for.

I had the opportunity to go here before they opened. The menu has good choices, and the service was fast. Everyone who worked here was very nice. I ordered the BBQ whiskey chicken sandwich with sweet potato fries. The burger was juicy and the fries were yummy! I will be visiting again. The seating is tight so I would recommend ordering togo.

Polite service, clean enough, and decent burger (I had the whiskey BBQ, with sweet potato fries). However I won't be going back; there's better ones out there.

Very good experience. The service was great from beginning to end. Explained the menu options, fast ordering and then delivery to your seat. Really enjoyed the burger too. The order arrived fresh and hot. I loved the sweet potato fries too. I tried it and I liked it.

It's not often that you find a place with customer service that goes above and beyond. My team and I have been here many times after a long day and they are always so friendly, provide menu recommendations and always have a smile. This doesn't happen too often at other places.

For a fast food burger joint in the downtown area, this place is about as good as it gets. Lines move fast, food is hot and delicious, and the service is extremely professional and friendly. The prices are in keeping with any fast food burger place downtown that is a step (or two) above BK and McD's, but if you are not a downtown regular, you might experience sticker shock. I have had several things on the menu and been pleased every time. Its so nice to be in a place that values customer service and genuine follow through. That alone will keep me coming back every time I'd rather eat junk food rather than the healthy lunch I brought from home....

The first review of this restaurant, from June of 2014, talks about the place having a lot of kinks to work out. So far, no good. The food is fine, definitely representative of the quality I have come to expect from Red Robin. The Whiskey River is a good tasting burger, the Teryiaki burger is good, the shakes and fries are great, but management of this store is sorely lacking. Some, in fact most of the employees are good front line workers, they smile, and feel bad when your order is bulloxed, but they seem to foul up a lot of orders. If you like a quality burger go ahead and stop in, you may get lucky. One key problem I have had is ordering online. The ordering platform is easy, the menu options, even special changes are very easy to select, and payment processing is outstanding. Where it all goes wrong is in the store. This is yelp, not War and Peace, so I will give you just my most recent problem with the online system when it hits the store. I ordered two burgers, one for me one for a co worker. Online system said it would be done at 1:30. historically they haven't been even close to on time, so I waited until about 1:45. Got there, checked in, and she said it should be up shortly. I sat down on the side, waited ten minutes, then asked again. Another very happy, hey no worries, it will be done in less than a minute. 10 minutes later I went to the register, said I have to go, sorry, can you hit me with a refund on my credit card, or just store credit, I will use it later. this of course required a manager. After a two minute discussion, the manager looks in the burger outgoing bin, looks at my receipt, looks again, and tells me why didn't you let us know you were here. These have been sitting here for a half hour. WTF. I did, twice actually. Then he goes on to explain that since the burgers were already done, a refund will take another 5 minutes to process. I said maybe, but I don't want cold burgers. He said these are warm, it is a great warming tray. I had things to do, said fine, I will take the burgers, and the manager was extremely rude. No hey, sorry, not a hey, we will make sure this won't happen again, just a snide under his breath remark and I was afforded the honor of bringing two ice cold burgers that cost $14,49 back to the office. I am glad I got the whiskey river, my friend got one with an egg on it and the egg had basically chill gelled to a pasty yellowish jellied mush. I won't go back again, I have this thing about manager attitudes. They are ultimately responsible for representing the brand they work for in its entirety, from food quality to customer satisfaction. If they don't at least cop to making a mistake on an order that was clearly one of their employees oversight I always get the feeling they also don't take personal responsibility for things like pest control, rodent control, cleanliness, or food safety.
