Food and prices are good but the customer service is bad. The elderly man always seems to have a upset look on his face and when taking my order He made me feel like I was bothering him. I tried the place a few times and same thing. I tried their other location on Central and they must be related bcuz I received the same poor service. When I mentioned that they forgot to give me my soup that comes with the meal that I paid for the girls at the counter started complaining about it in Spanish not knowing I speak Spanish. Won't be giving either location my money anymore.

I can't say that the gyros are bad, but they don't taste the way I like them too. One thing that makes a good gyros is the sauce. If your sauce is whacko then the gyros is already heading towards a thumbs down. I'm pretty sure that they freeze their sauce because it is watery and runny, and sometimes icy. Tzatziki sauce should be thick, rich, and creamy. It should NOT look like white water with green bits floating around in it. The polish is good, but you have to tell them to deep fry it if you want it that way. I ordered one once and said I wanted it deep fried, the order taker looked miffed and said we ALWAYS deep fry them. Apparently not, since the last two times I'd had them, they were boiled because I forgot to ask. Other than that, they almost never get the orders right. I ordered a plain gyros for someone and it had raw onions and tomato on it. I asked for just grilled onions on mine, and got nothing but sauce. It's the same way with the polishes, they can't seem to get the toppings right if you order more than one of the same thing.

This is your typical gyro and dog stand. The food is about as good as one would expect, but it just takes so freakin' long to get. I don't understand why it takes 15min to get a gyro sandwich, italian beef or hot dog and fries. Maybe give them 5min to deep fry some potatoes, but the rest of it, you're just shaving beef or picking it up with tongs and throwing it on a bun. I don't care about the demographic of the people working the counter, or the decor of the place, as others have stated. I just like to get my food within a reasonable time, and it just doesn't happen here. There's plenty of other places in the neighborhood turning out the same food and at a quicker pace.

  • Lisa M.

Came here as a last resort to try one of their Italian beef sandwiches. The meat smelled spoiled and the taste of it was horrible. I couldn't take a second bite. The sandwich was dry and bread was stale. I ordered water and it took the cashier a 3rd reminder to only to be given a tiny cup. The chicken wasn't so bad but for the money I spent, I could have gone to a better place. Lesson learned, I will not be coming back

We've eaten here quite a bit and never had a problem.Clean, good size menu of American & Greek fast food. Lot's of room to sit. Tv's always have whatever games are on. Reasonable prices. Tastes the way it should. Great large portion sizes. Especially like the steak dinner plate and their Greek potatoes. Their Spinach pie is one of the better ones around as well.

I'm so tired of their nasty attitudes and forgetting food in my order. The only one who has been nice to me is the blonde greek lady at the counter. The rest of the employees are pathetic and pitiful. I stopped coming to this dump.

  • Tony M.

Very tasty gyros and they give you plenty of meat, fries are good. Their grilled chicken dinner with the Greek potatoes are really good.

Just because I can't add negative ratings here I give these bastards one star. My fiancee and I went in there while I was craving a Chicago hot dog. The old man at the counter who barely speaks english said he didn't know what a Chicago dog was and to go ask for it elsewhere. Definitely not a way to welcome and keep customers! Tom & Jerrys is awesome though!

This place has some really good chicken when it's fresh!.. I come to eat here often and it's always good. The wait can be a pain in the ass sometimes!! but It's always worth it. The staff is alright they are a bit young and not very personable from time to time but I guess what Teenager would be working at a fast food place?. I recommend if you are in the are to give them a try! They have a really good Chicken breast plate with greek potatoes that are too die for!!

    (4)
  • Fatimah M.

Let's see. Hot dog on a soggy bun. Watered down cheese fries. Watered down soup of the day. Nasty coffee with curdling creamer. Tasteless tuna. The 1 star goes to the young lady at the front desk she was nice. But the owners apparently were crotchety only giving 2napkins.

Food it aweful! My fiance ordered pork kebab and they're very small pork in 3 sticks!! And I ordered skir steak and they're like chewinh gum! I had my food exchange with my fiance. I will never come back here again. Anoter mexican restaurant disappointment again!!

  • Susan B.

Best chicken dinner ever!! I always get the grilled chicken breast dinner which comes with rice, potatoes, pita bread and a salad. Their salads are so good too and it is just a regular side salad, nothing fancy. Everything always tastes so fresh. Mr. Zee's appears to be fast food but when you are dining in, everything is served on regular plates and you get actual silverware. The restaurant is also super clean. Parking can be a pain but that is expected in small strips in the city.

  • Tiffany T.

I've only ate Gyro's from here and there not dat bad but there not that good. There fries are plain with no taste or salt. Just in general its not the best Gyro point blank. I wish my Gyro sauce wasn't so watery and more creamy.

We will not be back to this restaurant EVER again. I've been there about a dozen times over the past three years. The food is mediocre, at best. As far as the quality of service, there's much to be desired. The cashiers are all kids who could care less about providing good customer service. My husband and I were both treated pretty horribly recently by the manager. Everyone who works there is extremely rude! So, unless you enjoy being treated like sh*t, I would not recommend visiting Mr. Zee's.

    (2)
  • Jules S.

In all fairness I felt I had to post an update to my former scathing review. All of the rude employees I had bad experiences with no longer work there & I've had nothing but great service since then :) I don't know the names of the young ladies who are always there now but they're awesome & I'm happy to be able to get a tasty burger and fries at a great price minus the attitude.

Good decent fast food. Great Greek lemon chicken. Good variety and fairly cheap. It's not some high end restaurant it's a hot dog and cheeseburger joint with good Greek food.

  • Dayla R.

Finding a good Gyro joint is essential to happy living. There was a place where I grew up that made Gryo's with the fluffy pita bread and skewer lamb meat with cucumber sauce. I went to a place in Connecticut that looked like your standard Gyro joint but their lamb was chunky and dry. Glad this joint makes it like I like and by Chicago Gyro Standards.

So I should have looked this up on Yelp before I strolled in. I was hungry, in the car and thinking about taking care of the local guy and not Burger King. So I ordered a chicken leg quarter dinner and grabbed a seat to wait. I figured, since this is the "Famous Chicken" that it's gonna be good and fast. Two strikes. About 15 minutes later, my number is called. Chicken was dry and seemed like it had been made about 2 days earlier and sat under the heat for a while. Rice AND potatoes.... what is this, starch-fest. I hate wasting money, so I soldiered through it wishing I'd saved my hunger for dinner tonight instead.

Mr. Zee's has been a part of my life for almost as long as I can remember. It's about 5 minutes away from my Grandma's house, so whenever we go to visit her we always make it a point to stop in. I have tried a majority of the menu-Gyros, Chicken, Skirt Steak, Burgers, Italian Beef, Salad, Fries, Potatoes, and I can honestly say that I love everything! Their portions are also extremely generous for their prices, and they could easily be shared between two people, or you could take home some leftovers! I also love the fact that every time I go here, I always see a handful of CPD officers come in to have dinner. You know it has to be good if cops love it. The only downside of it was that it was cash only for the longest time, which was a little inconvenient for many new-comers. However, the last time I went, they started accepting credit cards, so definitely much better. I also have a theory that all great restaurants are somehow related to the Greeks, and Mr. Zee's is definitely no exception! Go here if you want some great food at great prices, because really, that's what Chicago is all about.

  • Jamie S.

Not the best food I've ever had, but decent. Just mediocre. It's a typical greek/gyro place with the usual selections. The place is old and a little run down and desperately needs a good cleaning and a makeover. Also, expect to wait at least 10-15 minutes for a gyro to go even when there are no other customers in the place. Typical teenagers working the counter. This is the kind of place you stop in when you are starving and can't wait any longer. It's not the "OMG you HAVE to eat there" type of joint like Nick's at Harlem and Touhy! They do have really good fries though...

    (3)
  • Dan H.

Another place in the hood that has a lot on the menu. Food is good and there gyro is very good. Sometimes busy sometimes not the flow is pretty solid most of the time. There's always parking that makes it convenient. All in all good neighborhood place ill stop in when I get a gyro itch.

Phone ahead for faster carry out service is right. Greek chicken or similar entrees take time to prepare. Just because you call ahead doesn't mean you can't dine in. My frequent item of choice is the Grilled Chicken Breast Dinner. Served with rice pilaf, oven baked potatoes, garlic bread and your choice of salad or coleslaw ($7.55). Other favorites are the Mr. Zee's Special Char-Broiled Chicken special ($6.75). Both entrees take about 10 minutes to prepare but if you are hungry it feels like 10 hours. As stated earlier...call ahead its so worth it. They do not take credit cards, cash only. Prices may seem to appear high once they total your food order bill but I think that's just the high chicago tax kicking in.

  • Rhonda G.

So no matter what you get I guess you should be prepared to wait. I ordered a Greek salad and my boyfriend got a cheeseburger and fries....the wait for that was still kind of long. They also forgot to give us the pop that came with the cheeseburger meal. Although the staff is really nice, the operation is kind of scatterbrained and something that needs to be worked on. Now about this Greek salad. I'm not sure it was really a Greek salad. Does Greek salad always have hard chunks of iceberg lettuce? I didn't think so. Stuffed Grape leaf (on the side) Feta and olive oil dressing on the salad were good but as a whole, not so much.

    (3)
  • Lucy F.

Cheeseburgers are pretty good, hot dogs are ok.. I think the best plate to try is the chicken dinner... Their Greek rice is pretty good...and so are their dinners!!! It's always pretty clean.. Which is a always a plus side.

    (3)
  • Pam D.

Moist and flavorful Greek chicken. A fairly decent cheeseburger. Utterly indifferent service. I'd get the chicken to go if I am in the area, but I doubt I would eat there. Aside from the blah service, the interior is drab and kind of depressing. On the other hand, there is that chicken.....

  • Ania R.

The gyro here is very good. I used to come here all the time when i was younger. My complaint would have to be that the fries were soggy. And also the staff didn't seem too thrilled about my business.

    (4)
  • Agnes P.

I live in the neighborhood and have been going here since I was a kid with the family. The prices are good and the portions are huge! Any chicken dinner here is superb and they come with greek rice and potatoes (my faves!) The gyros here is also great and the fries are just the way I like em; thick cut and just the right mushyness!

    (5)
  • Conor M.

This is a great little neighborhood spot for gyros and chicken. The gyros are pretty perfect and the chicken is wonderfully seasoned, tender and juicy. Yes, you will have to wait for your order. They aren't really slow, they just make everything to order. I've always found the staff to be friendly. I prefer my fries to be a thicker cut as those thin cut fries get cold too quickly, but I know many folks like the thin cut fries. This is a solid neighborhood place where you can get a great gyros sandwich at a reasonable price.

Ahh, good ole' Mr. Zee's. I just about survived off of this place for almost ten years, when I worked in the mall across Irving Park. It's kind of hard to explain- I loved it, and sometimes, hated it. I'll try to explain. We would almost always order out for lunch back in the day, and there were a few choices: Burger King (eh), McDonald's (no one ever wanted to drive past Wright College to get it), China Chef (ugh), Mr. Ging (talk about sitting in your gut), Subway ($$), ...or, Mr. Zee's. We would more often than not have it delivered to us as it was just a short walk for the guy. The delivery guy used to be a young Mexican kid who would thank us for the payment and tip in such a timid way, that after he left, exaggerated impressions of him ensued every time. Good times. Very often the order would be taken wrong and they would send us the wrong food, but we never complained and ate it anyway. The prices are good, and I would order anything and everything off the menu. The food here has a most distinctive taste to it; Greek oil seems to be in everything. The salads were good, I liked the vinaigrette dressing. My favorites included the hamburgers, the shish kabob plate (beef and chicken), and the hot dogs. again, nothing extraordinary, but food good enough to leave us satisfied and ready to work another four or five (or more) hours. I recently discovered a Mr. Zee's Two in Morton Grove, but it appeared dilapidated, and according to reviews here on Yelp, it's riddled with major problems. So, this review is strictly for the location at Irving Park and Narragannsett.

I have been coming to Mr. Zee's for some 15 years, if not more. The food is always good and I especially love their sirloin steak sandwich, fries and a side of BBQ sauce. The service is good and the place is comfortable to eat at. I just wish they would sometimes tune the TV to something other than CNN. If you're in the area and are looking for what I call "home-made fast food" then this is your place.

    (4)
  • Liz M.

I do love their Greek Salad with chicken breast and the house dressing. It's my "tried and true" item that I order almost every time I come here. It's very large, with a nice size chicken breast, two Dolmades (stuffed grape leaves) good feta cheese, and a yummy warm slice of pita. All for under $7.00!! Can't beat that!! Is it fancy? No. Is it a neighborhood burger/gyros joint? Yes. Never tried their burgers (but based other reviews, I probably won't) Good fries, good Greek Potatoes, decent Gyros. Plain and simple.

    (3)
  • Curt S.

I'm not sure why some people don't like this place, because my fiance and I love it. I mean it is what it is- a gyro/chicken joint that has food really cheap and pretty damn fast for the quality. I've been there several times and never have I been disappointed with what I got. Patty melt with fries- 3.45!!! 1/4lb cheeseburger - 2.45!! Then you have things like the Chicken Dinner which is enough food for today and tomorrow for just over 6 bucks. And of course the Gyro is soooo good... and obviously a complete heartattack :) Don't eat them too often. But seriously, if you like little places with some heart check out Mr. Zee's -- good food-- REALLY cheap. They are a CASH only place. Not sure why someone posted that they take credit cards.. however they do have an ATM machine inside.

    (5)
  • Marlyn L.

I felt like a burger and opted not to go to the Burger King across the street. Sometimes, those little grease joints are the best spots to frequent. BUT... Mr. Zee's disappointed. I asked the girl if the burgers are decent and she said, "Sure" -- I shoulda taken the cue. I then asked what she liked, and she said the gyros. I got the burger combo, which was pretty inexpensive. When I got home, the patty was looked like a White Castle knockoff. The french fries tasted like microwaved potato sticks. Disappointing, I can't even go further. :(

I love the chicken dinner and salads nicely priced, go there to eat as often as i could!!

We usually stop in here after spending some time at Merrimac Park with the little one. I love the greek salad, it's not the best lettuce ever, but it is green and fresh. Plus they give you dolmades and lots of feta and kalamata olives. The salad is huge, and I love the dressing, its just the oil and vinegar greek style, but it's really tangy. They also give you a warm piece of pita w/your salad. My hubby got the chicken dinner, which he liked alot and he was stuffed because they gave him a side salad, rice and greek potatoes - oh ya and a piece of garlic bread. My daughter just eats a hot dog, but it's the first thing she's eaten in it's entirety in 2 days. Sans bun thank you. I've had the gyros and stuff here as well, and it's good I just don't like burping up gyro for the rest of the evening. Yuck! Good for the money, but not the best baklava I've ever had.

Moved to this area less than a year ago. We picked up from there & we really liked their food. I had the Chicken breast sandwich that came with a side salad, potatoes, & rice. It was great! My husband had the Greek style chicken with the same sides & I will have to get it next time...very good! Only downside is that they don't take any cards....but do have a ATM. Thumbs up!

I worked across the street at TCF Bank for 2 years and went to Mr.Zees at least twice a week for lunch. I love their chicken breast dinner plate with rice garlic bread and salad awesome. I live in miles now and still drive to this Mr. Zees at least once every other week for that chicken breast dinner, my best friend lives in oak forest and when comes up north always wants to eat here... He has the burger and grilled chicken breast sandwich on French bread... Their staff is really nice been there for years... A great family owned fast food restaurant... I recommend it to everyone...Only negatives is that it is bit pricey for a fast food joint, can't hear the TV in the sitting area, and not open late hours...

One word describes this place. Nasty! I live a few blocks away from this place and I was never impressed but sometimes you say to hell with it and you go and grab something nearby. I ordered a chicken dinner (their supposed famous chicken) and it was swimming in sauce. As a person whose parents were in the restaurant business and grew up in that business, we had a motto "If it doesn't taste right, throw some more sauce on there to cover it up". So from past experiences, I decided my garbage can will enjoy this meal more than I ever could. Also, can anyone tell me why it takes 20 minutes for a polish sausage? Every fast food joint I've been to has always prepared a polish in under 5 minutes. Zee's can be empty with no line and it still takes 20 damn minutes for a Polish! I mean come on! Is it because of bad or absentee management? Poor employees? That's not my problem, I simply want good food served fast. For Mr. Zee's to ever see repeat business from me, I need to see a different staff there because their current staff, management are not up to my standards.

They have a pretty large menu for what looks like a hot dog stand. Salads, gyros, chicken, beef sandwiches etc... It's very clean and their service and food is high quality. There is an outside patio for summertime use. You may want to stop here before shopping at Jewel across the street. You know what they say, don't shop hungry.

  • Patty V.

Huge, gigantic portions! The food itself is not spectacular, but if you need a lot of food, this place will fill your belly.Lots of families and cops,so you know the food is a good value!A little carb heavy for me. Do ya really need rice AND fries AND bread???Good chicken(my husband ate it,not me) and ribs(again, going by my husband's word). I had the fried fish, not worth it-it was overcooked!

    (3)
  • Alexzandra A.

I really like their Gyro's, but can't stand the chicken. Their Greek Salad is pretty good and as mentioned before, the olives and feta are welcomed. The portions are quite large and I never feel sick after eating here. We come here before going to Jewel across the way.

    (4)
  • Matt Y.

Quick and easy American and Greek fast food. Usually stop by here when I'm craving a gyro and don't want to travel the distance. The meat is nicely seasoned and the fries are crispy. I have tried other stuff on the menu like their salads and sandwiches but to be honest all of their food is just decent. Nothing really stands out and makes it memorable and having to go back. Ambience is ok. Interior is dark and kind of dated. When I went there were a bunch of dirty dishes on the tables.

    (3)
  • Barbara F.

The last two times I was here the gyros was way over cooked and I had to return it. They cut the meat to order then destroy it on the grill It is close to my house but I will not visit here again

  • Hector C.

I phoned in an order and the lady could not understand what I wanted to order. Before I could finish my order , she hung up on me. This place has been decent in the past but not anymore. I ordered a steak sandwich which usually cost about 8 dollars. This time I was charged 17 dollars and I complained to the manager but that's the price he said. Bad attitude , bad customer service and the sandwich was burnt. I'll never come here again

This establishment has two locations: Montrose and Central, also at Narragansett and Irving. This is well made food, for the average person and family to eat and bring the kids. For about $7.00 per person, one can get enough food for two days. The portions are enormous. Many people with young children will order nothing for the kids and let them eat off their plates. Some highlights are Greek chicken, any of the kebabs, Italian Beef sandwiches, Chicago style hot dogs, salads with a whole chicken breast and a decent Italian dressing. The menu is huge and after ordering at the counter, all food is cooked to order. The store at Montrose and Central has better tasting food. I am guessing they have a better grill cook. The food at Narragansett and Irving tastes plainer and certainly less seasoned. This is good quality budget food and / or a place to grab a quick hot sandwich, when you are in a hurry. Tonight, the wife, grandson and myself ordered $25 worth of food and we ate well. We have enough left over for lunch tomorrow, bringing the cost per person per meal to $3.50. Not bad these days.
