I ate food from here on Memorial day, I was expecting Smokin' Woody's, but was pleasantly surprised to find something new in its place. I had the sliced brisket sandwich. The meat was good and more flavorful than the usual brisket I partake in, but it was still lacking, a little salt and garlic powder took care of that. Mayo and a bit of their barbecue sauce added more flavor and a nice amount of juiciness. The meat wasn't dry, but I always add mayo. The fat on the meat melted in my mouth. The tater tots were just plain ol' tots. I'm not one to complain about big portions, but I don't want enough tots to feed 4 people, especially not plain tasting greasy ones. The mac & cheese...WTH! It was NOT to my liking. It was thick and glue-like. The cheeses were odd, maybe there was some Swiss cheese? There was also some strange nutty flavor. It had raw crackers on top which were not appealing in the slightest. I could make better than this with both arms tied behind my back. My mother and sister had the rib tips, and I ate some of my mother's. I enjoyed them, they were much better than Smokin' Woody's burnt caveman rib tips. The meat was tender. The only thing was that they taste more like meat out of a pot than the usual rib tips. That does not bother me, but it bothered my mother and sister who like a charcoal-cooked grill taste. My sister said her beans were not really baked beans, more like chili beans. The potato salad was pretty bad, not like any I've ever seen, it had little diced potatoes.

FINALLY a decent BBQ joint in north center/lincoln square! This even beat out big bricks! My husband ordered the burnt end sandwich with Mac-n-cheese. Did not disappoint! The bun was freshly made and brisket had great flavor and was tender. It was stunning! I ordered the boneless rib sandwich with corn fritters. Also great flavor and tender. Cooked perfectly! The corn fritters were yummy! Highly recommend. Another plus was the bbq sauce on the side. Most bbq places tend to douse their meats in sauce. Yuck! Loved the tots as well! Salt and pepper seasoning. So delicious! Nothing negative to say....we will definitely often order from mr. B's. Great job!

I hate that I didn't love this place, I wanted to. Service was good and menu was good. Place was dead on a Friday night, which was not a good sign. I got a platter with two meats and two sides. The baby back ribs were not good, very tough meat and no BBQ sauce only rub. Beef Brisket was okay but really dry. Mac n cheese, was bad like his school lunch in a industrial tin bad. The tattered totts were saving grace, they were amazing. Also the BBQ sauce is awesome which is why I'm suprised they don't put any on their meat. So over all I won't go back but I won't tell people never to go.

Really outstanding replacement for Smoikin' Woody's, which was in sad shape last time I went and seemed to have really gotten lazy and lost the plot. These guys are off to a great start. Everything was delicious as hell, enormous portion of meat, served up by a big fat guy that looks like he knows what he's doing. Respect! One thing that I wish was more clear is that the corn fritters are a dessert item, covered in powdered sugar and closer to beignets even though they're listed as a side along with things like tater tots and baked beans. They're good as hell, but should really be listed as a dessert. I was expecting hush puppies.

Very good, overall. Was warmly greeted upon entry and the staff behind the counter was quick to explain the ordering process and that there was outdoor seating if we wanted. Great selection of BBQ and sides. Pulled chicken was moist and baked beans were on point. Internal temp of the mac and cheese was just a little on the cool side so a star deducted for that. Very nice selection of root beers give this place a great American BBQ feel. All employees were exceptionally friendly and we were checked on several times throughout our meal. Looking forward to trying more items, and am glad they seem to have figured out what Smokin' Woody's (previous restaurant in this location) couldn't.

Got takeout for my family of 6 on a Saturday night. Ready in 20 min! Food was terrific, particularly the brisket burnt ends.

Mr B. has definitely spruced up the place, but there's not much personality on the walls as of yet. I realize they are brand new so hoping that will change. Pulled pork was good, and the corn fritters are very good. The sauce was a let down for me, I was expecting something thicker and sweeter for the regular bbq sauce. I will go back because it's in my neighborhood and we support that. The men in my family loved it all, so really...what do I know.

This place just gets it... The restaurant itself has a clean and bright aesthetic which provides a nice contrast to the dark and smoky BBQ. I have already tried several things off of the menu and the pit master is an artist. My favorite has to be the burnt ends and pulled pork. Just heavenly. The sides are all delicious but the hush puppies really stand out. Just, go to there. Now.

The best barbecue I've had since leaving Memphis Tennessee! The ribs were so good you really didn't need the sauce. Tender and melt in your mouth! The brisket was wonderful and the pulled pork is out of this world! Even the French fries were delicious! My husband almost had to roll me out of there I was so full! The service was great. Such friendly employees and the owners even came and introduced themselves and visited for a few minutes. This is the best barbecue around and we will be going back again. Oh and also very reasonably priced!

Mr. B does his barbeque right!! Friendly staff, large portions! His sauces are perfect (try the mustard)... The pulled chicken is absolutely incredible! The brisket is delicious! This place is definitely worth trying! Everything is made from scratch with plenty of love!

  • Neal K.

Mr. B's ribs are great! They are the perfect mix between falling off the bone and needing to give a slight pull. They come out dry rubbed and give you a choice of multiple sauces. The sides also are both traditional and unique. We will be back!!!

  • Melissa G.

Amazing! Amazing! Amazing! Good size portions and reasonably priced! Ribs are the best I've had in the city yet and the baked beans were delicious! Dress veryyy casual though! Nothing fancy but great experience!

Didn't like the bbq here. Everything was dryed out. The baby back ribs were flavorless and dry. The beef brisket was dryed out. The bbq sauce was unremarkable. The corn bread was very dry, it was very crumbly and mealy.

  • Kevin S.

I ordered the sliced brisket, Mac and cheese, baked beans, and corn fritters and overall everything is just okay. The brisket was the best part, but it was dry and only mediocre. I was excited about the corn fritters, but they were a let down, as was the Mac and cheese, both had very little flavor. The baked beans were good though, and delivery was very quick, 30 minutes early in fact. I'd give 2.5 stars if I could.

Excellent food and great service. Although I picked up, Mr. B's has a perfect BBQ dine in atmosphere. You'll find the menu provides many options. Will definitely do Mr. B's again!!

Let me start by saying this place was having a soft opening when I ordered from here and no one gets it perfect the first time. Items ordered: Burnt Brisket ends, St. Louis ribs, mac n' cheese, chipotle potato salad, corn fritters. I'm not going to whine about what I didn't like based on the above fact and I'll say the BBQ was good and the best in that neighborhood of North Center. Smoking of the meat was done right and none of it was dry; huge plus (the following critiques are only suggestions for the owner, who is a cool guy and actually FROM Chicago, like me). The St. Louis ribs were meaty and did not taste boiled. There was sauce on the ribs that appeared to be basted on at some point, but that's not St. Louis Style. St. Louis is a dry rub, period. It should have a darker crust from the rub. Some folks slather it with sauce before it's taken out of the smoker, but that's a different kind of rib. A bit on the salty side. Brisket was a good cut from what I could tell as the meat, and the ends at that, had enough fat to keep it from tasting dry. Brisket is one tough mother of a meat to master on the 'cue, so kudos. Mac was good, toothsome yet creamy and sharp. Cole slaw was rather limpy and too much mayo, but that's my preference. Potato salad was a little too toothsome; I prefer a more "mashy" feel. Fritters were tasty, could use a bit more corn meal in the corn meal/flour ratio, but again, see previous sentence. Personally, I don't like to review bbq sauces; it's like saying the ketchup here is well-balanced. It's a condiment and not the main element of good BBQ. The flavor is focused on the smoking technique along with the cut/preparation of meat. Place is very clean and staff are courteous enough; still figuring things out. I think they're off to a great start and produce some decent barbecue but also believe they'll get even better and knock it out of the park and look forward to it. Give it a go.

Went for lunch. Small place...6 tables. Burnt ends sandwich was GOOD. Pulled pork sandwich was VERY GOOD. Mac and cheese okay. Corn fritters not so good. No flavor whatsoever so that was a letdown. BBQ sauces on the table were all good. Previous posters said the meat was dry but ours was not. I wonder if you go earlier in the day like we did if that makes a difference. Probably so. Good smoked flavor. Not quite as good as Fat Willy's but a solid option for a quick bite.

Ah Mr. B's. They are in the former Smokin Woody's space on Lincoln. We decided to pick up a sandwich to bring into The Half Acre Tasting Room, to accompany our beverages. We moseyed in and ordered The pulled pork sandwich which was super tender. The corn fritters were like home made donuts without the sugar. Was a yum. Did need cole slaw and pickles tho. The side salad was pretty great with a really nice vinaigrette, too. Naturally, we had forgotten that there would likely be no place to sit down in the Half Acre tasting room. We did find a ledge and after 10 min were able to rush to a table which was being abandoned. So. yeah , try Mr. B's.

Was hoping for much more based on some of the previous reviews. Very disappointing. I ordered carry out. They told me 15 min. Gave them 20 and they hadn't started my order when I arrived. I waited the 10 min they asked me to and they put the order together. Got the 3 mini sliders-chopped brisket, chicken and pulled pork on mini brioche. So much fat I couldn't eat the pulled pork or brisket. When I opened the container it looked very unappetizing like a grenade had struck the food. Meat was just thrown into the container. Not in the buns. On top of that the food was cold and I just lived 5 min away. The mac n cheese was mediocre. Sorry won't be returning. One star is for the friendly staff. Unfortunately that is not all that makes for a good dining experience.

We loved this place. Had lunch here today and got the chopped brisket sandwich. It was deliciously smoked. The bun also really added to the flavor, nice and buttery. The baked beans had a really nice sauce to them but I prefer smaller beans. These were a bit larger than norm, but that's really more of a personal pref. My fiance got the chipotle potato salad. It was fantastic. We def plan on going back!!

Large portions, meat the way you want it and lots of decadent sides! This is a new place with a great menu, cute decor and very much like an indoor bar-b-que. The pulled pork and brisket is phenomenal, you won't be disappointed.

My family and I went here last week to give it a try. We were sad to see the previous BBQ joint close, however after trying Mr. B's we quickly got over that. Mr. B's was great! We tried a little bit of everyone by ordering their combo platter. Pulled pork, ribs and corn fritters were my personal favorite. My husband loves the baked beans, chopped brisket and pulled chicken. We tried a little bit of everyone by ordering their combo platter. The staff was incredible nice and helpful. Overall we were very happy with the new local bbq joint and will defiantly be back!

I am very picky when it comes to good BBQ and I am giving this place 5 stars. Amazing food. The meat is tender and delicious. The sauces are incredible. All the sides are delicious. My kids really enjoyed the corn muffin and fritters. The atmosphere is good too and we really loved the outside area garden. Highly recommend this place!

Just ordered takeout and had to leave a review. The ribs have an awesome smokey flavor. The tater tots are phenomenal. Fresh cut fries and corn fritters were also enjoyable. The pulled pork sandwich was so moist and the BBQ sauce is fantastic!! This was a great treat for a middle of the week meal. We plan to visit again soon! Thanks Christopher!!! :). Great neighborhood joint.

Really great flavors! It's great to see that somebody finally figured out how to make a slab of ribs taste that good without slobbering it up with a bunch of sauce. Great rub and smoke combo!

Such GOOD food! Can't wait to go back, seriously. Has a casual, friendly atmosphere in a great neighborhood. When you walk in the smoky bbq smell is amazing! I had a big salad (it was the half order)with chopped brisket on top. Best salad I have had in a long time. My husband had burnt tips with corn fritters and coleslaw - ALL SO GOOD! The Mr. B's sauces are really good and unique. We will def go back and want to bring family and friends.

When this place was Smokin' Woody's it was mediocre. Now, it's just plain ol' bad. I had a 3-meat plate delivered.. pulled pork, burnt tips and ribs. Ribs were BURNT. There's one thing to be charred, but these were burnt crisp and dry. Burnt ends had no flavor and were very dry. Pork was moist (primarily due to grease) but was very fatty. Not a place I will revisit.

Tried the pulled pork, brisket, and baby back ribs. All were good, and customer service was great! Will be back. The sauce is nice and thick with a hint of spice. Also, a great value.

Outstanding brisket! I came in toward the close of the day wanting a sliced brisket sandwich. The first thing I noticed was the smell of sweet smoke in the air! The staff was cleaning up getting ready to close. I came in around 8:40pm they closed at 9:00pm. I was told they were out of the sliced brisket, but had chopped. I got the chopped brisket on a onion bun with a side on baked beans. While waiting for my order I noticed on each table had three bottles of sauce. They had sweet bbq, spicy and a mustard sauce. I tried each of them and they were all very tasty and had nice balance to them. Finally got my sandwich, took less than 5 minutes, I had taken my order to go. Some times when you get chopped brisket or chop pork, there are places to chop it to death and the meat winds up looking like mush! Not here I was pleasantly surprised they did a course chop. There were chunks and burnt end pieces, yum::)) The portion size was very fair as well. The sauce came on the side, they gave by default the sweet bbq on the side. The bun was not as fresh as it should have been and did not have much of an onion taste, being an onion bun. The baked beans were good, but tasted more like red beans, simulator to New Orleans style. They were good though. All in all a very good first visit. Will be back to try the sliced brisket and the ribs! Staff was friendly and I believe Mr B's BBQ will become a house hold name in Chicago.

The main dishes are solid and where they really step up from the previous establishment is in the side dishes. Those were excellent and a dramatic improvement. Definitely a welcome edition to the neighborhood.

Called to place an order for delivery and was told they "ran out of meat." Unacceptable for a BBQ establishment. Very disappointed.

Really really wanted to like this place considering Smokin' Woody's was my go-to BBQ. I went three times hoping it would be better than the last, but unfortunately that was not the case. Every time I visited, they were sold out of the majority of the meat options and when you did figure out an option to order, it was cold. The only two good things about this place... corn fritters and mac and cheese. Love them both, but they're not worth going back.

  • Karen W.

Deep fried tater tots with BBQ rub seasoning... Sweet corn fritters... Mac n Cheese.... They offer up all kinds of goodies for meat lovers too but they had me at tater tots. Walk-in, order up at the register and pick up at the window a few minutes later. Fast, friendly service. Excellent selection of unique beverages- I tried the Cheerwine soda on the owners recommendation - delicious!

My boyfriend and I have been here quite a few times and we both have to say that the BBQ here is delicious!! The price for all the food that we ate was perfect! Not only that but it is BYOB! The staff is great and very friendly and quick to please.. Which is awesome!! I say you try everything on the menu little by little, you will not be disappointed...

I try to go to as many barbecue restaurants as I can. It's my favorite food and I'm always in the mood to try new place. My family really enjoyed Mr. B's BBQ. It's a cute neighborhood BBQ joint was a nice patio which is great because I love patio byob in the summer. I got the two meat combo with burnt ends and baby back ribs and my wife got chicken and hot links. My daughter also got chicken fingers with french fries. She loves chicken fingers french fries and apparently country music. The ribs I got were tender and delicious they had a nice smoky flavor in more seasoned very well. The burnt ends looked amazing with a nice bark and tender juicy little pieces of barbecue heaven. Not many restaurants serve burnt ends so anytime I see it on the menu I have to order it. I really liked the hush puppies I ordered also. They had a nice bits of corn in them and were moist and flavorful. My wife's chicken was also very well cooked and had tons of flavor. It was very juicy. She did everything she could to protect me from stealing her hot link. Overall we had a really great experience. The service was very nice, the staff was very friendly and we got to sit in this really cool seat that was inside the window. It was like we are sitting on the sidewalk. If you're in the mood for barbecue I would definitely recommend Mr. B's BBQ.

MR. B's brings bbq to North-center. My fiancé and I came here because we've walked past it several times and finally decided to stop. It has a cosy interior that only seats a few, but there is outdoor seating in the back for those three nice days Chicago has each year. If you don't like being warm when you eat, dress lightly because the heat of the open(ish) kitchen permeates through the dinning area. I got the baby back ribs, mac & cheese, and baked beans. My fiancé got the brisket, pulled pork, chicken, and St. Louis ribs. What struck me outright was how good the Mac and baked beans were. There were small chunks of meat in the beans, that's beans done right! My opinion of good BBQ includes the sides, it's simply a must for this fatty. The ribs were a little on the dryer side, but there was plenty of meat and the sauces on the tables helped to overcome it. I recommend the hot BBQ sauce, it's a good blend of heat and flavor. The St. Louis ribs were definitely the better of the two rib offers. Pulled pork, chicken, and brisket are standard fare, if you can't do those well then you can't BBQ. MR. B's did them right so no complaints there. What prevented me from giving a higher rating was the claustrophobic dinning area and the dry ribs. I would definitely order from MR. B's again, maybe just take out next time, although they deliver, so that's awesome. The owner(s) was/were nice enough to bring BBQ to this area, and it was sorely lacking. Say thank you by stopping by for what really is good BBQ. Tell them Erik sent you ... they have no idea who I am

Wandering the streets on Labor Day after yoga, we were just desperate to eat anything, there was so little open in this neighborhood that wasn't swamped with people. This place was wide open and ready to serve us quickly. The space itself is nothing to rave about (typical minimalist storefront) but the food was simply amazing: pulled pork sandwich (loads of meat) with tater tots, friends got sides of corn fritters (a bit sweet with corn and cinnamon) and brussel sprouts (freshly grilled). The only downside was absence of anything for drinks than cans/bottles that were slightly warm but it was a hot day. Very filling, I didn't need to eat the rest of the day, and very affordable!

Ooohhh my, great BBQ, I had the pull pork , it is the Best.!! I also had the Chipolte Potato Salad, excellent flavor. The atmosphere, is very inviting and everyone was friendly. Loved the Chicago photos on the wall. A must place to try again and again!!

Better than Gale Street. I love the option that you can pick from 2-3 meats. I picked the pulled pork and Baby Back Ribs. They were melt in your mouth. Not sure on the sides yet, but I'm not there for those. Still like Gale Street, but my sister and I still think this is better and there is no wait, it's in the city and love the local BBQ joint feel.

Ordered Mr. B's Saturday night on GrubHub and so glad we did. Everything we had was awesome. My wife had the chopped brisket and burnt ends with fries and corn fritters. I had the pulled pork and sliced brisket with the same sides. My wife's gold standard for brisket is Smoque and she says she feels this was almost that good. The flavor was as good as Smoque's but could've been a little more moist. I am more of a pulled pork fan and will go out on a limb and say that this is probably the best pulled pork I've had in Chicago, possibly in my Top 3 ever. The portion sizes are enormous. We probably should've split an order, but glad we didn't because we snacked on the leftovers on Sunday. The sauce was served on the side and was good, but the meat was so good that the sauce was not even necessary for me. The sides were good. Handcut fries are always a plus for me and these were good, especially for delivery. The corn fritters were not what I expected, more of a flour hush puppy, but were good nonetheless. We will definitely order and/or visit Mr. B's soon. UPDATE: We've ordered twice from Mr. B's this week. We can't get enough of this place. Tried the ribs for the first time tonight and they are awesome!!!

I ordered delivery via Grub Hub a few days ago. The food was great. I ordered a 3 meat plate (pulled chicken, pulled pork, and chopped brisket), fries, tater tots, and corn bread to split with my girlfriend. I was shocked at how good the fries and tater tots were even though they were delivered...it seems like most places fries end up pretty sad via delivery. The meat was seasoned really well. It tasted exactly how BBQ should taste. The sauce was good and on the side. They include a decent sized cup of it. Delivery was extremely fast. The quoted time was around an hour, I think it took 25mins, tops. I was still getting texts (from Grub Hub) about the delivery being on the way AFTER I received my food. I'd def order again.
