I have eaten here twice with my Grandpa and I ate good food. It wasn't extraordinary, but it was good. The sesame chicken was really different. The waiter alerted me as I ordered that it is different than most. When it came it I discovered that the breading was more like a tempura, which I liked. The chicken was a little tough, though. All in all, I like the creativity considering it's a small, nondescript Chinese restaurant, but it could be a bit better. Still, Gramps loves it.

I'll admit, I do not dive deep into the menu, but for my favorites this place 'em does right. All I need to satisfy my twice-a-month Chinese food cravings is Fried Rice done right, egg rolls and sweet-n-sour chicken. I moved to Jefferson Park 4 years ago, and it took me about a year to find Moy Lee's. Other places in the area could do Rice or Eggs rolls well, but NOT both. I cannot vouch for anything else on the menu (Crab Rangoon is semi-decent), but if you keep it simple like me and Fried Rice/Egg Roll combo is the most important thing; you'd be hard pressed to find better in the area. P.S. to ownership: Add Smoothies!

I've been eating here for about 20 years and the food is always freshly prepared, hot, and tasty. They have the very best eggrolls that I've tried on the NW Side. I've tried numerous dishes on their menu and all were good, made with the freshest high quality ingredients. Sometimes when dining in during the early afternoon, I've seen Moy, his wife and staff preparing various vegetables for their dishes. They will honor no MSG requests as well, just ask. The interior decor is a bit dated, but the restaurant has wide comfortable booths. The waitstaff is the best, very prompt, professional and courteous. When dining in I've always enjoyed the complimentary tea with dinner. If you like sweet dishes, the Moo Shoo Chicken and Pork are out of this world good. When you have company coming over and you want to order Chinese, this is the place that you call for carryout or delivery.

I have been eating here for 15 years. The food is always fresh, the people are always friendly. The inside could be more modern, but its not unpleasant. We have to travel a little farther to eat here, but we won't go anyplace else for Chinese. LOVE IT!!

There must have been a change in chefs recently, as this place is just meh now. Dishes are coming out way different than description on menu. Very Disappointed.

They have the best egg rolls ever!! I love them!!

Moy lee has some great Chinese food, except for the potstickers which are just okay. The chicken soup, egg rolls, and chicken with broccoli are very good! Not too salty either. The waitstaff is really friendly and attentive and it is a nice family owned place. I har only at in the restaurant, but the phone is always ringing off the hook for take out orders. You must try this place if you are looking for good food in the area!

This place is the reason I travel all the way to Chinatown, or Argyle for a good meal. Been here 5 times since I moved here and the only edible good I've encountered are the potstickers and beef broccoli. The potsticker filling is delicious, if only they would stop microwaving them. Nothing else I've had there is even remotely edible. This is the place we went to when we had no idea what Chinese food should be. The food is trapped back in the 70's and it's a shame. So I'll hop on the 92 & go to Argyle until I find something closer.

Great eggrolls!! The food is very good and very fresh..you can really taste the difference between restaurant quality food and take-out..prices are actually not too different from the smaller places in the area..we found our new chinese place!!

I have been coming here since 1993 and this is hands down THE BEST Chinese restaurant in town. The atmosphere is more classy than your average Chinese joint. You get everything on clean, fresh plates that are not chipped or mismatched like at other Chinese restaurants. For dinner they break out with elegant linen napkins. The servers have been the same for ages and are very professional and actually speak great English so you don't have to repeat your order 5 times and you know they won't mess it up. As for the food, OMG! You won't find anything like Moy Lee's elsewhere. First, they make their own sweet n sour sauce. Not of this processed, hot pink-colored sticky sauce. Theirs is just the right amount of sweet (I think they put oranges in there) and just the right amount of sour (apples I think) and it's this warm orange color that makes it appetizing. They steam their rice to perfection. I like to eat it on the side bc it's just so good plain. For years I couldn't break of of my Sweet n Sour Delight cycle. If you like sweet n sour you'll love this dish! Chicken, pork and huge shrimp in crispy deep-fried batter with that delicious sauce! Oh my goodness, to die for!!! The egg rolls are huge, about the size of my head and filled to the brim with Chinese cabbage, bbq pork and assorted veggies. Fried to perfection it's the perfect appetizer. The rangoons are also worth getting as you can actually see and tasts the crabmeat inside. Last night I has the Sai Woo duck. I've only had it once before while dining here with a party of 8 and we had to share all our dishes so I didn't get enough of this delicious dish. Finally, I had it all to myself. It was so good I ended up saving the other half of it to eat for lunch the next day. If you haven't tried Moy Lee's out yet, then what are you waiting for? Your tastebuds will thank you!

Been going to Moy Lees since I was a little girl and honestly no other place has chinese food as good in my opinion. The only other place where I get food that tastes similar is when I go directly to china town and even then there are foods I try in China town that I prefer more at moy lees. Keep up the great work Moy Less you have me as a life long customer.

Brought my Mom here for Mothers day and it was closed by the Health Department. Really put a damper on our holiday.

This is literally the worst Chinese food that I have ever eaten. Not one thing that I ordered (and I have ordered many different things) had any SMIDGEON of flavor. You'd have to drench the food in some kind of sauce to draw up ANY flavor. It's completely bland, but no healthier, so there goes the problem. The only items that have any semblance of flavor are the egg rolls. Even still, I am unsure of the ingredients and it made me feel uneasy while eating it. Overall I would never recommend the restaurant to anyone. I'd only eat here again if I was forced to.

Great dine in restaurant. Not that many good Chinese restaurants around the Jefferson Park area. It is a bit dark inside, but I guess it adds to the ambience. Also the food comes quick and the staff is extremely friendly!

Not good! What happen? Soup cold and food just not up to par....The place next to 7-11 is way better now. Hope you can get it together again.Heard owner talking that he was tired and no family members wants it maybe they just gave up. Sorry!!!

Good healthy food. No MSG. It tastes so fresh. You actually taste the ingredients, not salt like most Chinese places. I just wish they had a non-shellfish option for the egg rolls for allergy reason. Otherwise wonderful!

I love this place!! In particular their egg rolls are amazing, and I just love their beef&broccoli. I''ve never had to wait for a table, and you get free oolong tea all you can drink with your meal. It's very quiet and quaint. They are also one of the only places I know of that you can buy bags of oolong tea. I recommend that everyone in the area give this place a shot. I've had nothing but good experiences in the 10+ times I've been here.

We refer to this place as "Oily Moy Lee", and even though it isn't exactly oily, it isn't worth a second trip. It is average at best, but to me it's merely mediocre. To those who don't venture outside of Jeff Park for Asian food, I can understand the connection. But I have eaten a lot of Chinese food, and to me, this place doesn't hold a candle to others I've been to.

My family raved about this place and took me there one afternoon and it was HORRIBLE! first off...when we walked in the whole restaurant smelled like rotten decaying something...fish maybe? My cousin suggested they might have cleaned the fish tank that particular day? Anyway, if that wasn't appetite destroying enough, I ordered vegetable chow mein and it was literally a glob of noodles with some brown rancid tasting gravy and onions and bean sprouts. There were a couple pea pods but 3 at the most. Just terrible. I will never go back, nor do I recommend this place. Yuk!

I thought that was pretty cool. The Fried Rice is excellent. The Mongolian Beef is FLAME!!! Great Eggrolls, And the Egg Foo Young is Awesome! One of my favorites.Check it out!

I have been going to this place since it was take-out only. 30 years of being a customer and I love the place. Owner is friendly. Always engages his customers. Food is great. An old school Cantonese place that reminds me of all the Chinese restaurants of my Chicago NW side youth, but they also offer other Chinese varieties. I really miss the friendly waiter, Dan, who left about 5 years ago. There was nothing better than a lunch when your waiter would regale you with his Cub Fan nonsense in his Chinese accent. This is a NEIGHBORHOOD PLACE. It serves a loyal customer base. Nothing fancy about the decor. You go there to eat, not wine and dine.

25 years ago this place was great and we ate here constantly. But now...Yuck! My mom wanted Chinese on Mother's Day so we got a whole bunch of different dishes and everybody had a little of each. We ordered the food with no MSG and it was absolutely atrocious. (I understand MSG gives it flavor, but I order no MSG from other places and the food is delicious.) It was so bland with NO flavor at all. The chicken was so overcooked it was tough and hard and almost crunched when you bit into it. Broccoli was light green and total mush. The fried rice was dripping grease and tasted old. The egg rolls were absolutely inedible. I don't know how you can screw up an egg roll but they tasted like crap. All in all the entire meal was a disaster and completely overpriced. We had a group of 6 serious eaters who love Chinese food and all of us agreed it was just terrible and we would never eat here again.

I love this place! It remains the same some 15 years later. The staff are pretty much the same, and they a nice bunch of people. This is the best Chinese restaurant in Jefferson Park. There are always people inside dining in, and there are also plenty of takeout and delivery orders as well. The hot and sour soup is just "souper-duper" and the eggrolls are divine. I get an order to go sometimes, just because they're so yummy and good. The eggrolls are a mix of the different meats and the "mystery" pink meat that was mentioned in a previous review is actually their barbeque pork. The entrees are very good: you can never go wrong with the chicken birds nest; the beef pepperada; the beef lo mein; or any of the sweet and sour meats. The sweet and sour sauce is not heavy and has a very fresh, citrus taste that some may have to acquire. The ultimate thing to get, though, is Moy's Special, which is a mixuture of the different meats in a savory sauce that comes with pan fried noodles. Above else, all ingredients are fresh, and there is a great cocktail menu. Any place that has a Harvey Wallbanger on their menu is awesome!

I used to love this place, but in my opinion, the quality of the food has deteriorated in the past year for some reason, which is very disappointing. I suggest trying Saigon Grill on Elston Avenue instead.

I don't know why this place doesn't have better ratings. Their bbq beef is the best. Mix that with their special fried rice. *drool* they make by far the best egg rolls with their special sweet and sour sauce. If anyone knows of a better place with egg rolls let me know. I don't even live in the area and I buy their food.

Went her for lunch and I want to address some of the other reviews that say the food is bland - is is not bland, it is subtle. This is not a Chines fast food joint it is a restaurant and the food tastes like restaurant food - also the staff and owner are amazing - the owner making out Christmas cards when i was there...

My sister took me to Moy Lee's and I was angry that she had not introduced me to this place before now. Such friendly service from a great wait staff. The owner introduces himself to everyone in the place and asks if you like everything. Turns out he used to know old Doctor Cook whose offices were next door years ago. The egg rolls were fantastic. I had the egg foo yong combo and loved it. This is one of my favorite Chinese dishes and not many places do it this well. I had the wonton soup which was really tasty. I liked the strong flavor of the broth -- not watery like many other places. When we went the place was really full and you could hear the people at the other tables saying things like "You have to taste this - it is so good!".

For a northside Chinese restaurant I really liked this place. It's like old school Chinese food. The only thing, whenever we order out, they never give us fortune cookies! I need my fortune!! lol The chop suey is very good and so is the fried rice. Would recommend.

I don't know what happened to this place, it used to be decent. Now, not so much. Tried dining in on a Friday night. From the moment we sat down the waiter hovered over our table. Although it was only 8:30 he told us that the restaurant closed at 9:30. Okay fine, that gave us one hour, ample time for a meal. We ordered appetizers and after he delivered them to our table he stood there waiting for us to order. We hadn't decided on an entrée yet and when I told him he said "sometimes when it's slow they like to close at 9:00." Then why didn't he tell us that in the first place? We were already there so we ordered. What came out was inedible. My daughter ordered Sesame Chicken, a Chinese restaurant staple, but I don't know what she got. There were no sesame seeds, no breading, and it looked really old. Although we asked, we were told that it was indeed Sesame Chicken. Okay. I ordered Chicken Chow Mein, another standard dish for a Chinese Restaurant. It looked like glue with a lot of bean sprouts. It tasted like it too. We took the leftovers but wound up throwing them away. The only reason I am giving them one star is because they made a damn good drink. My advice: skip it. There's a million and one Chinese places and I would venture to say they are all better than Moy Lee.

So my buddy had heard that Moy Lee has superb pot stickers and MAN WAS HE RIGHT!!! These were some of the best pot stickers I had ever had. The problem? The rest of the food was TASTLESS. Look at my past reviews. I don't roll this way, but a review like this is very well deserved. In short, all three meals were so bland that once we had all finished the half of our meals that had just gotten us to the point of sustanance, we were forced to throw the rest away. And Chinese reheats well! We didn't want to take the chance. It was so bad that It is October and I am commenting on a meal in August. I looked up my American Express card, just to be sure I had the name right. In my opinion the food was warm... that was good. there were no bugs or outright baddness that I could see... just your standard tasteless waste of money. My advice... they need to fire their cook... inless the cook only makes pot stickers. Because damn those pot stickers were really good.

I have been eating here for over 2o years!! I love this place. Their food is almost always good. Every once in a while the chicken may be a bit crunchy, but it is rare and you cant expect them to never make a mistake. The service is also great!

  • Hey U.

Avoid this place. We went here on a weekend and there was only one other party there... NOT a good sign for a weekend. The food was nasty. Our bbq spare ribs appetizer came to the table within 60 secs of ordering it, and was piping hot... an obvious sign that it was microwaved (not to mention, it was mostly fat and unchewable). The sesame chicken had a funky sauce that smelled like dish rags... no joke. The mongolian beef had the same issue. We packed most of the the food to go and dumped it in the garbage on the way home so it wouldn't be obvious that hated this place. You were warned.

Hot and sour soup - Very Good. Egg Roll was large and tasty. Hong Shu Chicken was good but had too much gravy. Tea was hot and full bodied. Service was excellent.

My favorite chinese food. Egg Rolls are the bomb. Fried rice is great.

  • Laura A.

Disappointed.....we tried it for the first time last night. Ordered Mongolian beef, veggie fried rice and egg rolls. I couldn't even eat it. The Mongolian beef was swimming in some thick sauce that tasted like BBQ sauce and the egg rolls were very fishy tasting and had that bright colored mystery meat in it. My husband said that veggie fried rice had very little taste. I didn't even bother. Yes, the portions were great, but to appreciate that I need to LIKE the food. I don't think I will try this place again

I can honestly say that this is hands down the BEST Chinese food I have ever eaten. I love it so much I have dreams about ordering from Moy Lee. I am very particular when it comes to Chinese...the fried rice has to be perfect and the egg rolls can make or break your meal. Moy Lee's food is just fantastic. Everything here is delicious! I've recommended this place to many friends and they all agree. They even deliver to Edison Park (where I live), which is key.

This place is great. The food and portions are wonderful. The friendly owner Ed is always there to greet you. The eggs rolls are great, along with the Mongolian Beef. I would highly recommend this place to anybody.

  • Marian L.

A good sit-down chinese restaurant...very quiet and quaint. However, they use MSG in all their cooking! They say they can cook without the MSG upon request...but that's why I honestly prefer Chinese Kitchen: I never have to request or worry about a mistake!!! The only real plus about this place is that there are plenty of seats...the food is pretty good - as long as it doesn't give you a huge headache afterwards!!

For the first time I tried Moy Lee last night . The food was horrible and that is putting it nicely. I tried it primarily because there were a lot of good reviews. I ordered sesame chicken. It was awful had a sour flavor, most sesame chickens have a bit of honey in the sause so it is slightly sweet, not at all here. My husband ordered mongolian beef his was slightly better but oily and still not good. The food was not worth it at all. I want my money back!!

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
