I was a little hesitant to write this review since the place is never too busy. But it is well deserved. They have the best Mexican food in the city. First off, the salsa is outstanding. Just the right amount of spice and almost a little creamy. The skirt steak is an absolute must. My wife normally goes with the quesadilla and she is always happy with it. My standard is the skirt steak tacos. The meat is high quality and very well seasoned. You could put the skirt steak in a shoe and it would taste great. The place is family run and the people are very nice. The service may not always be the fastest, but the end result is fantastic. Sometimes it takes a few extra minutes for chips because they heat them before serving. You will fall in love with this place. Just try not to go when I want to go for a nice quiet dinner.

My partner and I came in on a busy evening to have some food and drinks. I'm not sure if it's busy like that regularly but it was extremely busy/packed. The staff did everything possible to make sure we had seats available to us and our wait time was very short. We ordered a pitcher of margaritas, they were good but some cons; they're expensive and had more "mix" flavor than tequila, also they didn't offer any flavors we were just automatically brought the original flavor. Our food was good although our experience with our waitress was a little chaotic, in the time we were there we ordered things from 3 different wait staff (because our waitress was MIA). I'm not coming down on them too hard, I just wish they would consider updating/upgrading a few things to keep them relevant and fresh. Overall, I'd recommend for a lunch date or early dinner.

If I could just sit down and consume two baskets of hot chips and the amazing homemade salsa, I would. But alas, I always seem to find room for their amazing mole dish. The Yum factor is not to be believed. I love their service and funky modern/native decor. They are always super nice to my kids too... which is a huge plus.

Outstanding food and atmosphere. Previous Yelp reviews are accurate. First of all the salsa is unbelievable. I am going to attempt to reproduce it at home. It has a great smoky flavor which can only come from roasting ingredients whole under a broiler or on a burner. I want to also guess that they use chipotle peppers instead of jalapeno or serrano which also added to the smoky flavor. Then they pureed the ingredients in a blender. Tasted like smoky, silky tomato soup. Started off with the guacamole. Deliciously creamy with just a hint of heat. Good size portion too. We had to have our chip basket filled 3 times! Main dishes included the Pollo de Mole. Again, wonderful complex flavor: smoke, chocolate, sweet, savory, bitter. Excellent. Wife had shrimp quesadillas which she loved. We had several house margaritas which were also excellent, if a little on the sweet end of the spectrum. Prices are somewhat higher than taqueria-type places but far below what one might expect to pay at Frontera Grill. Great food. Great value.

Wow! Love this place, we just moved so we were looking for a solid mexican place in the area. This place has it all, authentic, yummy cooking, fun, casual and eclectic atmosphere, and excellent, warm, friendly service. Not to mention nicely balanced margaritas. We'll be back again and again, can't go wrong with this place.

Mom's Old Recipe Mexican Restaurant is our new favorite for Mexican food on the northwest side of Chicago. My husband and I order carryout from Mom's at least once a week. The staff are friendly and the food is delicious. We drove by Mom's for quite a few years before finally venturing inside to check it out. What a surprise! The guacamole is excellent and one of our favorites is the steak quesadillas. We ate at the restaurant recently with some friends and when the margaritas were served, they just didn't taste like they usually do. We continued to drink them anyway but our server decided to have new ones made for all of us. It was a very nice gesture and the new margaritas were as good as ever. Highly recommend for authentic Mexican food.

Wow! I have eaten here several times and recommend it to EVERYONE! This is a family owned and run MEXICAN Restaurant and pride of ownership shows. The food is amazingly fresh and very tasty. The prices are average, not cheap, and the portions are adequate, not gluttonous. The staff is very friendly and accommodating. It is not unusual to have multiple servers helping you along with your main server. I typically get the carne asada and it is EPICALLY delicious. Their chips are fresh made and warm and the salsas are delicious. They typically have a few food and drink specials every day. Where else can you get a $5 margarita on a Friday? The parking is tough on Milwaukee Avenue but so what? If you want parking move to Schaumburg and eat at a chain restaurant! My wife and I are becoming more and more "regular" there and even though I just ate there yesterday I look forward to my next visit. Muy sabroso my friends, MUY!!!

Bad service, keep rushing you to finish while your plate still have steak and potatoes, a glass of wine still half full.

Went here with a friend on a random Thursday night. We ordered the sampler appetizers which were just OK but came with delicious guacamole. I had the taco trio - the steak taco was the best; the fish taco had a unique sauce that did not agree with the rest of the flavors. My friend had the mole enchiladas - mole was good, with an intense but delicious spice. I would return for the guacamole and to try the banana chimichanga dessert!

Went for the first time last night with my husband. We both liked it. He got carne asada and said it was excellent. I tried the Enchiladas con Frijoles, it had a great kick to it. Portions were smaller than expected...I am used to other places that at least give you a lot more for your money--and plenty of beans and rice. But that's ok, we had room for dessert, and both choices were great. We will be back.

don't be fooled by the street apperance. from the street this place looks like a simple burrito joint. the food is excellent. they have a very simple selection your typical taco/burrito stand choices but of high quality ingredients and preparation. my only negative is that the service can be slow, even very slow, however very friendly. i will go back over and over again

Checked this place out today, and the food was surprisingly really good. My only complaint is that the food portion is small. i ordered a side order of rice, and it barely covered the bottom of the container. if you are really hungry you might want to skip this restaurant, and get your moneys worth somewhere else.

The restaurant decor was very cute. The service was impressive and the food was amazing. We started with the appetizer sampler. Since it was our first time to the restaurant, we wanted to try everything. My favorite of the appetizers were the Huarachitos. The chips and salsa and pickled veggies were delicious, but diners are not allowed complementary refills like the majority of Mexican restaurants. I was very happy we ordered the appetizer because the portions were tiny here. The entrees were fantastic. They were artfully displayed and tasted fresh and flavorful. They only issue was the size. I ordered the enchiladas verdes and there were only two small enchiladas and a small bowl of beans. I really enjoyed the meal but was left hungry in the end. I ended my meal with a Mexican hot chocolate. Again it was tantalizingly good but a petite cup. The hot chocolate also came with a couple pieces of fried dough with cinnamon and sugar and honey on top. I will be going back... but never on a day when I am really hungry!

Thanks to Groupon, the Young Lawyer and I ventured to the Unknown Territory that is known as Jefferson Park. We headed north on Milwaukee Avenue with some sense of the adventure that the pioneer's had -- with the exception that, if we missed Mom's, the GPS would chastise us severely in that nasty original Star Trek computer voice. Mom does not have her own parking lot. Don't be fooled by a parking lot on the north side of Mom's - it belongs to some mortgage company, and they take a dim view of unauthorized vehicles. However, on this semi-decent Thursday night, we found ample street parking nearby, and it didn't cost us a thing. It was about 7:30pm when we arrived, and only a few tables were occupied. I cannot tell you how noisy it gets. We were pretty quiet. We were greeted by a very pleasant waitress named Glenda. She turned out to be super sweet, helpful, and efficient. I had a standard margarita, and the Lawyer had a Modelo beer. We were given a dish of pickled vegetables, chips and salsa. The Lawyer was concerned that the vegetables might be spicy, but there weren't. The chips were light and tasted fresh. I liked the salsa, but I was saving room for the guacamole, which was also very good. The Young Lawyer will eat pretty much anything, but I prefer vegetarian. I didn't see much selection on the menu, and I questioned Glenda. She said they could do roasted vegetables, or a mix of cheese, rice, beans, whatever I wanted. I asked for enchiladas verdes with roasted vegetables. The Lawyer was interested in the mole', but aware that the taste and style of mole' vary widely. Glenda said, would you like me to bring you a sample? Well, actually, yeah, he would! She brought a small cup of mole', and we both sampled it with taco chips. Holy mole', it was good! He decided to try the chicken enchiladas with mole. I don't know how long we waited, because we were conducting a conversation and not looking at a clock, but we got the food in a reasonable amount of time. The presentation was gorgeous. I kind of wished I was one of those food snobs who take pictures of their meals; it was that beautiful. And the only thing better than the presentation was the taste. It was fabulous, definitely one of the best Mexican restaurant meals I've had in a long, long time. There was real flavor, some heat, and just enough to be filling without turning me into La Gorda. The Lawyer attacked his enchiladas with gusto. I can't tell you myself about the pollo, because I don't eat dead animals, but he couldn't say enough about how good it was. And I mean that literally. He couldn't say enough, because he kept stuffing his face. Wow. Two really good meals. The kicker was the surprise dessert. The Lawyer and I were there to celebrate his recent birthday. Now, I did not call ahead, and I did not tell Glenda that we were celebrating, but she overheard us. She brought over a complementary flan, and the cook had written "happy birthday" on the plate in the sauce. We were totally surprised, but not so surprised that we forgot to eat. It was really good. I thought we'd enjoy the meal, but I sure didn't expect it would be a five-star experience. I'd go there again in a heartbeat. We were totally happy that we ventured out of the near north side comfort zone to explore the northwest side.

My husband and I were here on a Monday for lunch, I would said that food was really good. We don't care to pay the price for good food, the problem is that they do not have consistent in their food flavor. The second time we took our children and the serviceand food was bad. I do not think we will go back...sorry!

A delightful surprise!!! It is much more upscale than the image I conjured from the name. We stopped here for lunch yesterday and really enjoyed ourselves. If you check out the pics, you will see that this is not a dive taco joint. They have a full bar and boy howdy, did I love my margarita. It tasted like more, but I restrained myself. I'll be back for more of those if nothing else. We did not care much for the salsa that came with the complementary chips, but the marinated veggies made up for it. We split the special appetizer which was delightful. It was an assortment of tasty appetizers off the menu, anchored by some decent guacamole. Chris had the carne asada. It came with some jalapeno fried potatoes. It was good and the meat was tender, but it could have been seasoned a bit more. I had the enchiladas with mole. It was very good. I really loved their mole sauce. It was rich with no bitterness to it. In my book, it was a real winner. This will definitely become a regular haunt for us. If the salsa had been better and the steak seasoned more, we agreed this would be a 5 star stop. Good food, great drinks and easy parking. We are so there!!!!

Let me be up front. This place is seriously. Seriously. Confused. But i'll forgive it for the food. A little pricey, but relative to the quality of cooking. When I think "mom. old. recipe" . I think good home flavors. comfort food. cooked with love. soul food, if you will. I'm terribly disappointed with the irony. I think the name of this place is all too wrong. Once you walk in, it's as though you've just stepped into a piece of the Wicker Park restaurants that got tornado'd on over to our side of Jefferson Park. Trendy interior with an area for live music. An area for a bar. Some TVS up. Little out of sorts, but I encourage more this around Jeff Park. Oooh. But most uncomfortable seating ever. I love booths. And the only cushion u get is for ur butt. only chairs. only with metal backs. =( That said, you've been warned. The food is on point. The salsa does have this smoky heat, as mentioned. I'm a big fan. I couldn't stop chowin down, and the tortilla chips were far from stale. Big pluses. I had chicken flautas (w. avocado, cuz i'm an avo junkie that way). This was perfect crisp. Flaky and crunchy without being hard an inedible. A super plus. =) maybe i'm a fan because it's the crispy texture of egg rolls. Good quality chicken (not great. but good. not mystery meat like TBK and other hole-in-the-wall spots) A little dry, but def with flavor. The rice was sad. No interest in even eating half. The beans were eh. Also half eaten. My bf had enchiladas de mole. He was a fan. And also disliked the rice n beans. I'd say this place does great on their sauces. No complaints on service - - other than that my bf initially had his order wrong. Waiter wrote it down correctly too. But he was served enchiladas verde. After arguing with the waiter until the mistake was realized, his order was swiftly corrected. Too bad there was no extra accommodation for it-- like dessert, or a drink, or anything. I mean cmon. We were the only two diners in the restaurant. 1 out of 2 orders right? hm.. not like it was busy. Wanting better choices for outside dining, I'd keep this place on my list. Truthfully, I think I'd still prefer Tanzitaro any day. Better service, food, and friendly faces.

Wow and Yum!!! My 7 year old niece was dropped off by my place on short notice yesterday and since we were hungry I asked her pasta or Mexican. She wanted taco's so off we went. I already had the little dive place we were going to head to in mind when I passed by the bright yellow plastic sign that said Mom's Old Recipe Mexican. So why not its here and she wanted taco's. By the look of the front of the restaurant I was expecting more of a dive type Mexican place but as soon as I looked through the window I saw white table clothes and knew that the front of the place did not give the inside justice. Steve greeted us at the door got two menus and followed my niece to the front of the restaurant because she wanted to sit by the window. Then it started: To start - He gave us some marinated vegetables and some chips and salsa. That's when my taste buds started to go nuts. The salsa was a thick delicious puree that had a nice smoky flavor and the vegetables were out of this world. I could have just eaten the salsa and vegetables for my meal. The Botanas (Apps) - We ordered the Huarachitos which were these mini hand made tortilla topped with green sauce diced onion, cilantro and Mexican grated cheese. They came out 4 on a dish and were bursting with flavor (only $3.50). For my entree - I decided to go with the fish taco's for my meal and my niece got her ground beef soft tacos which had been cooked with corn, green beans and carrots and as soon as she got past the "orange stuff in my food" she ate it up. The fish taco's had a great flavor and a chefs secret sauce on top that I was tempted to just lick off the fish. I cannot wait to go back. Our waiter was very helpful. They have a small menu with many of the common Mexican restaurant fare on it but I do hope to see them branch out. From what I could taste you can tell their is a lot of talent in the kitchen and the prices are so right.

The Good: Excellent steak, very good shrimp quesadilla, great salsa, very good chips, good friendly service and live music on ( on certain days). The Bad: I used to love the steak tacos but they taste completely different than when we first starting coming here. The steak tacos taste like they put the meat in a pot and stew it (yuck), they also leave too much fat on the meat . The Ugly: No parking and no booths to sit in.

I have to re-review Mom's. I have been coming here since they opened. I am addicted to the salsa and $5 margarita's on Fridays. Although, for a time the service had been horrible, causing me to temporarily find other local restaurants. I returned not too long ago and the server who caused me to give such a poor rating, had improved tremendously. So thanks for your improved service and exceptional food!

Fabuloso! we've tried several Mexican restaurants and have been disappointed over and over. Mom's is family run, all the employees are cheerful and knowledgeable, and he food is superb. So are the drinks-get a mango margarita and you'll crave one ever-after! Shrimp quesadillas are stupendous, Hubby had the burrito and loved it. Portions are huge so you could split one meal, take a meal or doggie bag home or skip the complimentary chips and salsa (but why would anyone do that?). Dining room is not very big so leave the kids at home.

I stopped by for a carry-out order before my late-night shift. I ordered the steak tacos and also the tortilla soup. I usually use steak tacos to gauge the quality of a mexican restaurant since they are simple but a great representative of what is going on with the food. The tacos I had were GREAT! Super tender, flavorful, and went well with the red onion and cilantro. The rice and refried beans were standard. The tortilla soup was not so good. Looked more like just a cup of beef broth but came with fresh avocado, cheese and tortilla strips. Overall I don't think I will be coming to this place for carry-out since I am still paying restaurant prices for items I can get at a taqueria (La Pasadita Express on Elston) for 1/3 of the price, but I would definitely visit if I was going out for dinner in this area.

Hidden gem! The outside look of this restaurant does not do any justice to the inside or how good the food is. My picks are the chicken enchiladas with sala verde and the shrimp quesadillia. They use to have a lady playing live music which was great touch!

  • Kristin M.

The food was ok, but the portions were small especially for the price. The main issue was the poor service. We were there on a Tuesday evening. There were very few other people in the place, but our food took forever. I asked if I could have a strawberry margarita on the rocks and I received a frozen margarita with big chunks of ice in it. It was a disappointment. We won't be back.

Used to love this place, but it was awful. Overpriced, small portions and the fish tacos were burnt.

Food is ok. The prices are comically high. Portions are way too small. Unless if you are a runway model, you will not be filled up. If you are any kind of guy over 150 lbs. Good luck eating here and being filled up spending less than 20 dollars.

Meh... that's all i can say. Atmosphere: The decor was cute, but it was so cold (so ladies bring a sweater) The music was all over the place... there was salsa music, Spanish club music, 90's pop... just strange. Needless to say, I wasn't comfortable. Service: There was a waiter that walked by our table every 5 minutes and just looked at us. Considering we were the only people in the whole place I found it unnecessary. They took forever to even take our order (after appetizer got there) we weren't drinking alcohol so it was just a lot of waiting. Food: The food was good but it wasn't great. The portions were small for the price. They only give you one small serving of chips and it even states on the menu that only one is provided. are chips really that expensive?? come on... My husband said his burrito was fine but nothing special. The horchata was terrible also, it was almost chunky. We won't be back that's for sure. I'd rather go to Tanzitaro down the street and pay the same prices for a WAAAAAAAAAAAAY better meal!!

Have a true, authentic night in Mexico! The minute you step into Mom's it is like walking into a small, romantic Mexican village. The wait staff is genuinely happy to see you and graciously seat you at a table of your liking. Water is poured, menus, and a generous list of that evenings specials are put before you. Crispy chips with a yummy salsa soon accompanies you as you perouse the menu. I recently had the taco trio with one chicken, one steak and one with tilapia fish. The plate came to my table soon after I ordered accompanied by my cheery wait staff. A steemy plate of beautifully displayed tacos were before me. As I ate each one, I truly felt as if my own mother lovingly put together the tender chicken, steak and white fresh fish for my enjoyment. The soft taco shells were fresh and soft. The meat was fresh and juicy with shredded crunchy veggies on top along with tender cheese and a sprinkling of cilantro. Happy Mouth!!! Come try Mom's Old Recipe. A wonderful experience from start to finish.

I cannot believe this place. We went just on Friday Nite because we like the Margaritas and they told us we could not get in without a reservation that had to be made online. WHAT? We live in the neighborhood and have given them so much business. Well, they were having a private event after 9pm and did not want us there. I told the owner they should at least post it on their sign and we would stay away.

Been to Mom's 3 or 4 times and never disappointed with the food but the service has varied. Since they have a full bar it would be nice if they had a better selection of wines or offered a BYOB option. I have had a variety of dished there and never had a bad one. Oh, their salsa is pretty much addicting!

A disappointment from start to finish, especially after the Chicago magazine accolades. Appetizers were passable, although the guacamole was bland and the queso fundido much greasier than any I've had before -- plus we were given only three tortillas for four people. While we waited for our entrees, everyone who arrived after us was able to eat, pay and leave. After several assurances that our food was on its way, our meals arrived. They were not worth the wait. Tacos acorazados featured desiccated, breaded steak, and the enchiladas mole tasted solely of chocolate. The enfrijoladas jamon reminded me of discount lunch meat. Due to the wait, we were offered another round of margaritas on the house. Our pitcher was long gone, so we accepted -- and had to send them back when pineapple margaritas arrived. And that original pitcher? Despite not requesting it, we found that we were poured Patron for $45 --not very ethical. We won't be back.

Been to this place twice so far. First time was perfect. Had their Sangria which was pretty good. The sampler appetizer which was great! The chicken flautas are really good! I had the Carne Asada Tampiquena (Skirt steak w/enchilada). Steak was cooked a perfect medium as requested and had really good flavor to it. Enchilada was great also. I requested the Salsa verde. Im not of fan of mole which is the sauce it comes with. The salsa that comes to the table with the chips is a mole variation with a small kick. I wish it was more chunky. I did order a side of pico de gallo which helped. The second time was the same experience with just a little bit of service problems, thats why they get the 1 star deduction. I will definitely be returning to this place again. In my opinion its one of the best Mexican places in the area.

although they didn't have any veg options on the menu, they accommodated. The veg burrito was awesome, with mixed veg/potatoes, rice, tomatoes & guac. guac was extra. for how delicious this was this place was pretty empty on a monday.

Yummy ! First time here and my kid loves it! Chile Rellanos are great, so are the enchiladas verdes. The guacamole was very fresh and we all enjoyed it. The only drawback was the lack of parking.

One of the worst Mexican restaurants I've ever eaten from. My family picked up dinner from there last night and the thought of it now makes me cringe. The worst part of the meal for everyone was the awful tortillas. They were bland, horrible texture, and fell apart in shreds. I had the Steak Enchiladas and I had to extract all the tortilla and just scooped up the tasteless steak. My son had the Chicken Tacos and he said the chicken was gross. My mother and sisterhad the Steak Fajitas and were not happy with the too large pieces of not so good vegetables. This was an all around disaster of a dinner.

Great date night restaurant with wonderful ambiance, excellent service, and delicious food. If you were just driving by, the storefront would not make you stop (nor would the boring name), which is too bad. You are definitely missing out on one of the best sit-down restaurant experiences in the area if you don't stop in.

  • Sam M.

This place is great ! The steak enchiladas remind me of mom's cooking back home. Fresh guacamole and the salsa is excellent! Good service, sometimes slow, but don't let that get in the way as they are all family and they work hard to make sure every table enjoys the experience and to fulfill all of your needs. I will continue to come here often.

This is a really nice place with food that's decent. I just didn't find anything outstanding about it apart from the guacamole which was excellent. The chicken in my enchiladas was possibly the driest chicken I've ever eaten, and the mole sauce was so-so. Decent margarita good carne asada, but really dull beans and rice (Honestly, the rice tasted a lot like Minute Rice, but I can hardly believer that's the case.) The server was pleasant but not very good about refilling empty glasses. To be fair, the place was packed and there were only two servers so I'm cutting her slack and blaming the restaurant which should have known better. It's a nice place. I'm sure we'll be back. I just don't think it'll be the first place we'll think of when we want Mexican food.

Funny...was going to start my review with "meh" without remembering that a 2* Yelp review essentially says just that. Went here based on Chicago mag recommendations and with a Restaurant.com certificate in hand - trying to stretch the budget for our little family of four. Arrived at 5:45 on a Sunday night, restaurant a little under half full - several families, a couple of other small groups of 4-5. The pickled veggies (nice touch) were good, the salsa & chips ok. Ordered guac and it was just...meh. How can guacamole not taste like avocados? But strangely, it didn't. Service was slooowwww...which is especially painful when you've got two kids under 6. The waiter seemed indifferent the entire time. (I'm sorry, you don't have to fawn over my children but at least smile at them when they say hello to you.) Finished my margarita before the entrees arrived and yet wasn't asked if I wanted another one until my meal was done. Sorry, no. Margarita was good tho pretty sweet and not too pricey at $7, I think. Most entrees ranged from $9 for enchiladas, tacos, etc. to $18 for steaks and other specials. I will say my carne asada was excellent. Good cut, well cooked, but wish there was a bit more of the basil sauce they mentioned that would accompany it - there were "dabs" of it on the corners of the plate. The hubby had a chile relleno that he deemed "different" (filled w/ ground beef and covered in a white sauce). We DO like both your "typical" Mexican fare and stuff that is a little offbeat. This menu certainly looked interesting. But poor service and food that wasn't great adds up to a "meh" for us.

The food was excellent . I took a star off for the service which was a little slow and for the margarita which was a little sweet for my liking. I had the carne asada which was the most tender and tasty I have ever had! I tried my daughters enchiladas mole with ground beef and it was very good but I like Fernando's (on Lincoln) better. The huacharitos were delicious! I could eat a meal of just those. My favorite was thier salsa which was very smokey and not like the usual salsa fresca you get at most places. Everyone I was with loved their dinners. We will definitely go back soon. PS - Restaurant.com has a gift certificate available!

I came here for dinner with a good friend upon her recommendation after reading about this place in the Chicago magazine. We were going to do a dinner and mani/pedi night and since both were close to one another, I felt this couldn't be any better of a situation. We had a 5pm dinner and for most of the meal, we were the only ones in the place. We sat at a two top and had very friendly service. The menu isn't very extensive but no need when we both were so happy with our choices! I got the steak enchiladas with melted cheese on top and my friend got the shrimp special. The verde sauce had plenty of heat but it was not overbearing. The steak enchiladas were very tasty. Slices of avocado adorned the tasty bites along with lettuce, red onion and sour cream. It came with beans but I was so full from the entree that I just had a taste. Delicious! I'm not usually a fan of beans but these were mighty tasty. We ordered dessert and shared caramel flan and fried dough with cinnamon and sugar and ice cream. The caramel tasted like liquid gold and the fried dough was light and crunchy. I didn't try the ice cream but I'm pretty sure it was butter pecan. Everything from the beginning to the end of the meal was outstanding. The prices were reasonable and comparable to any sit down Mexican restaurant. Although this is a bit far from where I live, I won't mind making the trek to eat here again.

Great food and service. Really nice ambiance and there was even a decent singer/guitar player. Tonight we used a restaurant.com coupons we've had for a minute. The complimentary chips and salsa and pickled veggies were a great start. For an app we had the shrimp ceviche which was really good and flavorful. Good quality shrimp that arrived with saltine crackers. The huarchitos are really really good and very tasty. It's a small portion but for $4 it's worth it. The guacamole is very bland and I would not order it again. I had to add some salt and hot sauce and it didn't really help. After the appetizers we split the enchiladas mole with chicken. This was probably the best mole sauce I've had. It definitely rivals Frontera's, which I love. Skipped desert and left full and happy. I will definitely be back to try some other tings.

The first time I tried the food here I did carry-out, so I can only imagine my fish tacos would have been awesome and not just very good had they been hot out the kitchen. The second time I dined in with a gift certificate from restaurant.com - score! I ordered the carne asada which was an excellent cut of meat and cooked precisely medium as I requested. My friend and I finished the meal with the sopapillas- very tasty!!! In my experience, there are few Mexican restaurants with dessert menus beyond flan- and I hate flan. So yay them! Definitely not an easy feat to find good Mexican in Jeff Park, but I think I may have found it!

Well I found my second favorite Mexican restaurant (Nuevo Leon will always be my favorite). The fajitas were amazing and the service was great. I will definitely be back.

Huh? The name, Mom's Old Recipe, I think refers to the food. There's nothing confusing about this restaurant. If the place feels trendy, not sure why that should be a "miss." Couldn't their Mom be trendy? Just sayin'. Chillax. Anyway, back to the food. Freakin' good. Steak tacos, Fish tacos, Asadas, Chips & Salsa, Pico, Mole sauces, all good. I would give it 5 stars, but the beans haven't yet blown my mind (Garcia's in Lincoln Square). The prices are fine. I was lucky enough to have caught their lower prices when they first opened. Now they will be even more popular due to the Chicago Mag kudos. Well deserved and way to go. Great for Jeff Park.

The food and the service was horrible!!! I would NOT recommend this place.

I'll jump on the bandwagon. I've only ever gotten carry-out from here; it's a little too nice to inflict my oft-cranky 2-month-old upon the staff (who are awesome), but it's delectable. Steak dishes, commonly half-gristle at yer average Mexican joint, are always tasty and tender. Between this place, Tanzitaro and Cafe Marbella, this little strip of Milwaukee Ave offers some pretty damn good cuisine.

Usually i dont trust a place when it has 5 stars from only a few people, but this place deserves it. The wait staff is very nice, the place is really nice, the first time i went i was in gym shorts and sandals and i felt like a bum. The food is amazing, the owners are the cooks and you can tell they take pride in what they make. All very a very reasonable price its hard to go wrong here!

Hello over- pretensioso (probably not a real Spanish word) Mexican restaurant. I mean, the ego from the waiters of this place is so thick I could could break a tortilla chip dipping into it. I find it ironic that a restaurant with a name like "Mom's Old Recipe" has an almost small plate mentality. Aside from that, the food is pretty good. The appetizers are the best part of the meal. Being a vegetarian, going to a Mexican restaurant is like saying.. "hmm.. how would I like my cheese? In a pepper or in a tortilla?" I opted for enchiladas, since chille relleno is disgusting to me. I've been here a couple times and would maybe go back. For Mexican food in Jeff Park I like Taquiria el Pueblito on Cicero the most.

We checked this place out last night. The service was fast and pleasant. The margaritas were okay, but the food was fantastic. As others have said, it's the best mole sauce I've ever tasted. The salsa they put out with the chips was unlike anything I've tasted, it was darker and had a nice kick. If I am in the mood for Margarita's, I'm still going to Marias, but if I'm hungry, this place is near the top of my list for Mexican.

You will NOT find better mexican food anywhere in Chicago. Best Mole I have ever had. Hard to find and not too fancy (just the way I like it) but well worth the drive! Bartender mixes great drinks as well

We just tried this place out for the first time yesterday and it is definitely going to be the first of many visits! The service was excellent and food was delicious and excellently priced for the quality. We had the sampler appetizers, the tortilla soup which had great flavor, the enfrijoladas, the special chile relleno and chocoflan for dessert. The menu had a number of unique Mexican dishes that you don't find at your usual Mexican restaurant and we loved everything. Can't wait to go back!

we came on a sunday night and was surprised where the restaurant was located. technically in the suburbs, but still within a quick 20 minute drive without traffice. the restaurant is nice with big paintings and empty of people. we ordered mojitos - really good margaritas - strong and HUGE guacamole - really good salsa verde - GREAT with a bite! couldn't stop eating it enchilada with mole - good, but could be bigger i thought the food was decent and reasonably priced for the portion size.

The place at first doesn't look like much from the outside, but once you walk through the doors you're greeted by nice cozy place. First time going and loved everything I had. Would highly recommend the ceviche and Mexican hot chocolate.

I agree with Linda M. from Chicago. We were there on the same night. Must have been an off night all around cause we were very dissappointed as well. We were seated immediatly up near the front window and the waiter took our drink order right away but didnt come back for our food order for a good 20-25 minutes. He gave us some weird excuse that the food takes a long time to prepare. Huh???? What does that have to do with taking our order? Anyhow, The food finally came and most was good but the portion sizes were a joke! My husband got the Chile Rellano entree and there was only one small-mid sized chile which he ate in 6 bites. It wasnt that great, very little cheese inside, no extras on the plate. We had to ask for rice and beans. My steak was very good but not huge. Even so I gave half to my poor husband. The prices were way too high for the amount of food we got. Did the Chicago Magazine article go to their heads? We eat out alot and know our food. There are better places to go for Mexican. Too bad cause we live close by and were hoping for a great meal. Not bad...if you dont mind super slow service and little portions. We wont be back.

Wonderful, authentic Mexican. Cool decor, friendly and very pleasant staff. Menu was elaborate, fairly priced, and food was excellent. Trends to the spicier side and offered $5 house margaritas. Worth the trip.

This place is ok. Salsa tastes bottled. Moles are good but need a little more heat. Tacos are mediocre. Service is friendly. The place is cute and offers plenty of street parking. However, there are so many fantastic Mexican places in the city that I am not sure I would give this place another try.

I had the mole and chicken and it was awesome, the chicken was tender and the mole was not to sweet and not to spicy, it was perfect. I went here with my family and my kids are very critical about what they eat but they loved it as well! The service was ok. I mean I think I would give the service more thumbs up if the waiter didn't look grumpy. He barely smiled. They were attentive but gosh darn it smile and make me feel like you are happy to see me! Especially when I am spending so much money. We are a family of 6 I have 4 daughters and a husband. So overall I would of given it a full five stars if the waiter was a little more smiley. I wasn't looking for ecstatic but just a little more welcoming.

This place doesn't appear to be better than the rest but once inside it clearly is. A very friendly atmosphere, fair prices and delicious Mexican food have brought me back here time and time again. The queso chorizo appetizer is phenomenal as well as the chicken flautas. A great quaint place to go on a date, not to loud yet not uncomfortably quiet. I highly recommend this place to all

I already gave Mom's rave reviews back in January of 2011 but I just can't say enough good things about this place. I went there for dinner again last night and tried this (I forget the exact name)fantastic taco entree - it consisted if steak milanese, on a handmade corn tortilla (to die for delicious) with rice and a side of potatoes. It's so unique and something that you will never have anywhere else, really this is a must try dish.

Repeating some positive yelpers below, Mom's is truly a hidden gem within the Jeff Pk community. I can't count the times I've driven past this place, judging it's quality on it's exterior (rough looking). To my surprise, I was quite shocked on the atmosphere and layout once seated. Wait-staff is extremely attentive, menu is extensive and the food quality is some of the best I've come across in recent years. Price is higher than what you're probably accustomed to at traditional mexican restaurants, probably on par with local competitor Tanzataro - however, the quality in both food quality and service is worth the extra $$.

This place is great. I've been here many times and the staff is always friendly, but a bit slow. The margaritas are great, strong and tasty. Also, get the mole and make sure to ask your server for the banana flambé, it's not on the menu but it's wonderful.

We tried this place out not knowing it had been written up in Chicago Magazine. Just wanted to try out a new place in the neighborhood. It was quite a nice surprise! I've been there twice in the last week and am going back again this week :) There's kind of an open, lofty feel; big colorful paintings on the wall. Didn't expect this looking from the outside. I've had the enchiladas verdes (chicken) twice. So good. Topped with a drizzle of sour cream, avocado slices, fresh shredded lettuce, and salsa verde. Comes with pinto beans, but I wish it came with rice as well. The guac was good, kids liked the quesadillas, husband loved his fish tacos. Oh, and there was a singer/ guitar player - she was pretty good. Don't be in a hurry here - the servers are cordial enough, but are in no rush... All in all, a great addition to the neighborhood!

Had a gift certificate for this place, so we figured if someone wanted to buy us a meal there it had to be good, right? Nope, not even maybe. Start to finish this place sucked on every possible level. From start to finish. Place has a nice look, but that's all that has a passing grade in this awful establishment.... Took 10 minutes to be seated, then another 20 of waiting for the bartender to bring us some horrible margaritas. Got a table about 3 beers after that. Ordered some apps that took a half hour, thinking that our entrees would be close behind was a poor assumption 45 minutes after they took the plates from the apps the entrees arrived, along with 2 free giant pieces of black hair in my wife's dish. All of which were bland and overcooked. Sent that back 20 mins later served a nice hot dish to go along with our 3 nice cold meals. The plate was still on the check, so I made sure to tell the waiter/owner/manager how displeased we were with the experience. He asked me what I thought he should do....close your restaurant and start over.

We have just returned from our second Saturday night in a row at this exceptional restaurant. And I look forward to many more. The care given to each dish, which most certainly must be made to order, makes it seem brilliantly new, even if you've had it before somewhere else. I can heartily recommend the excellent Huarachitos for appetizers and the sublime Chile Relleno de Picadillo for the main course. But I don't dare explore the rest of the menu, because my first choices were so heavenly, and I simply wish to keep repeating the experience. The staff is gracious and welcoming. I have rarely felt so immediately at ease in a neighborhood I do not know. This restaurant deserves to be far more patronized than it is at this early point in its history. The rave reviews in the press, for once, were spot on. The prices are very reasonable. Go, before the rest of Chicago discovers this little-known gem. Oh, and for heavens sake, don't miss the Bananas Foster prepared tableside for dessert. The lights are dimmed for a moment as the flames leap from the skillet. It's a brilliant little piece of theatre to finish a rare and satisfying evening. Five stars? Yes. Five stars need not be reserved only for very expensive meals prepared by celebrity chefs. When simple and authentic food is served with such care and panache, it deserves special attention. Don't take my word for it: see for yourself.

This storefront Mexican surprises in many ways: you don't expect such quality, class or sophistication when you drive by on the street. We went on a Friday night and they had live but quiet guitar music playing. Great ambiance - not tacky or kitschy at all. Food? my companion had the shrimp in peppers and adored the dish. Me too. Plump juicy shrimp in a buttery sauce of wine (almost sweet but not) rounded out with oodles of garlic and just right peppers. Served surrounding an okay rice. I was torn between carne asada and the mole: they make their own and my rule is to go for what I don't make at home. Mole won. Nuanced and layers, with a smooth and rich mouthfeel followed by a bit of texture from the ground nuts and spices. Flavorful and the chicken breast was juicy. Again, served with rice and fried plantains. Next time, I would order a side (though I didn't see any listed) or vegetables for some texture during meal. My companion loved the food so much he insisted on splitting a dessert. Bad call. As he said when we left, it would have been perfect if we left before dessert. We had a tres leches cake. It took over 45 minutes to arrive after ordering, came drowned in sauces, covered in whipped cream with strawberry sauce over it. Cake itself was "meh" not much flavor and too sweet. I find when they oversauce, there is a reason. Like I said, the cake took 45 minutes and all they needed to do was do sauce/cream. The service overall started good - prompt water, refilled chips, etc. but went steadily downhill. Semi long wait for meal, way too long wait for dessert and check and they never cleared dirty napkins before serving dessert. The waiter stated they make everything in their kicthen from salsa to mole. I recommend going mid-week when staff is less overwhelmed, order apps and skip dessert. Our entrees were outstanding and those around us smelled great too. Not your typical Mexican but very authentic.

We ate here twice in December and loved it both times. Maybe at some point I'll be able to order something besides the chile relleno de pecadillos, but I love it so much I'm not sure. My husband has tried two different dishes and both were yummy, including the mole sauce for the enchiladas. There are many more options we still need to try. The flan and the salsa that comes with the chips are delicious as well. The service is perfect and the food is beautifully presented.

Why has it taken so long for me to discover this place?! It's AWESOME!!! The ambiance is certainly nothing to write home about, but the food (and drinks) are awesome. Enjoy some killer margaritas and amazing, HUGE platters of food. I tried the enchilada trio and all three varieties were outstanding. Service is attentive and friendly, and prices are very reasonable especially considering the quality and value of the meal. I can't wait to go back again very soon!

My husband and I were dieing to try this place and finally made it. Let me start with the grumpy waiter who would not smile and would disappear to leave our drink glasses empty. I consider myself a Mexican Foodie so I know good Mex food. This was not it! Lets start with first impressions. Chips and salsa. This was the strangest salsa I have ever had. It was somewhat like a mole sauce and creamy. The chips while hot, had many that tasted stale. I could not explain it but we guessed that they were saturated in oil and tasted stale? That or they were mixing stale chips with fresh hot ones. We asked for some salsa verde and that was neither hot or thick. It was like water and had no flavor. So now I was sceptical. Let me tell you. Pepes is a better deal and much better tasting than this place. My food finally came after a long wait. My husband ordered the steak/chicken fajitas. He received a small plate and not a sizzling one. Really? They gave him 3 small tortillas with it for $18. No guac, just some sour cream. It was awful. I ordered a combo plate with a chicken enchilada and a steak burrito. (oh yeah, grisly steak) The enchilada was covered in a ranchero sauce that would not stick to it. It was a greasy clear liquid underneith my enchilada instead. Even the plate was weird. It was a long rectangular white porcelain plate which seperated all of my food portions. How weird is that for Mexican. The Beans-ILOVE refried beans. I had never had salt beans in my life. Not only were they liquidy but they tasted like they had been cooked in sea water. Yuck and my small pile of rice was flavorless and tacky. The burrito-since they filled it with the salty beans it was almost inedible. And lettuce and tomato in a burrito?? I've only seen that on occasion. The lettuce was a gross brown mossy mess. $43 dollar bill with tip and we had no alcohol. I would have rather had taco bell, but I guess its a learning experience. You cannot always believe what you read on yelp. Unless they changed cooks the day we got there! The only good thing is that I did not take my daughter there for her last dinner before leaving home for awhile. We could not make it. I would have felt so bad to subject her to that when she loves Mexican food as much as I. There are plenty of good Mexican restaurants in the area. Do not waste your time or money on this one.

This is my favorite Mexican restaurant in Chicago. We have been to it several times. Best salsa in Chicago! Great margarita's! Good selection of Mexicn beer. Great mole! Prices are cheap. Place is clean. Plenty of FREE street parking (unlike most places closer to downtown!). Waiter is friendy. Sometimes they have a woman playing guitar and she is good. We always go on our birthdays. Love it!

This place has been open for awhile now, and I've been curious, I live about 8-10 blocks away and this neighborhood is seriously lacking in good Mexican restaurants (until now). I love being able to walk to a restaurant from my house, and we will be making the trip to back Mom's alot! Went there last night, loved the steak enchiladas mole, had a margarita that was pefect, husband enjoyed his chicken tacos, and when the bill came...under $35 with tip for two people with drinks! Overall a great experience, keep up the good work!

First of all, living in Jefferson Park, my one complaint is that there are not enough good restaurants in the area! Well we have found our favorite Mexican restaurant right here. I had driven past this place and thought it as just one of those small taco/Mexican places. Then I was reading Chicago Magazine and there it was under the Best Mexican Restaurants...I was blown away. My very good friend and I decided to try it out. When I walked in I noticed how clean it was. I was greeted right away by a very nice man. I was seated and waited for my friend. This was a good time to look around and check this place out. The wood floors were nice and clean. I like the colored walls..one side is green the other a creamy beige. They have a huge painting on the wall of a mermaid under water. After awhile I heard them say to put the music on. It was nice Mexican music...not too loud. It was time for a drink! I asked what kind of margaritas they had and he had a slew of fruits...strawberry, mango, pineapple, original! I went with the pineapple! It was really good BUT it could have been a bit stronger..I must have looked like a light weight. When my friend came she was also greeted and we looked over the menu. I was craving fish for some reason and I went with the shrimp special. It was sauteed shrimp in a cranberry red wine with peppers and garlic......absolutely wonderful. It also came with Spanish rice. My friend and I thoroughly enjoyed our entrees. We looked at the dessert menu and shared a caramel flan and this cinnamon sticks(buenillos??????) that came with whipped cream and butter pecan ice cream! I am not the biggest fan of flan but this was smooth and good! The desserts were a hit. I decided to have a coffee and it came in this cute this cup that looked like a little jug with gold lettering on it with faded words of the name of the Restaurant. In my mind I'm imagining this cup being brought over from Mexico to the U.S. hoping when they get here they can open up a great Mexican restaurant that people will love.....well that is what they have done indeed!

Mom's old recipe is the closest you are going to get to authentic Mexican food (this is coming from a Mexican person)the huarachitos are to die for as an appetizer and the torta de tinga is finger licking good and if you have room for dessert don't pass on the banana chimichanga or the choco flan.We are regulars we go every Saturday

I love that this is a family owned place and the few times we were there, the waiter made us feel right at home. The food is authentic and fresh. Everything is prepared right then and there not pre-made. My kids had a blast ordering kiddie cocktails and the waiter brought them a plate of the marischino cherries to their delight! They always remembered us when we walked in. The live entertainment was spectacular! One margarita had me thirsting for another!!!

We shoulda stayed home. We came here with a groupon on a Friday evening. First impression was good. The decor was nice and the place was filled. We took the last inside table anticipating a good evenig. The waitress took our order in a timely fashion. Beer and huarchitos, fish tacos for me, chicken burrito for my bf. Things went downhill from there. The chips came in a tiny basket and several of them were soggy wet. No pickled veggies came for us, although we noticed some tables had them and others didn't. We finished the beer and appetizer quickly and the table was cleared. Then we sat and sat some more. We waited exactly 93 more minutes before our entrees came. The waitress came once to apologize and to say they haven't been this busy in six months. Now we noticed why the restaurant was crowded, most of the other tables were also waiting for their food also although most were well supplied with margaritas. When the food finally came, they were a huge disappointment. The burrito was extremely bland. You can get a better product at Chipotle, and certainly a lot faster. The fish taco was two over-done fish fillets on top of some veggies and tacos. Honestly, they tasted like frozen fish sticks. We shovelled our food down because we were starving by then and left as quickly as possible. I usually don't write reviews for mediocre dining experiences, I just suck it in, but this one was so bad I felt others need to know. Don't bother with this place unless you have a bland palate and time to kill.

The food is above most Mexican fare .and worth a visit . The only complaint is that on fri/sat there is a live musician playin which is great but a bit to loud to have a conversation . I think some quieter back ground music would be more appealing, at least through dinner service .

Call me biased but this place is great! Hidden Gem is 100% correct. They have great recipes that are good. Their hot salsa is oh oh so good and spicey. I have never had a dish come out of this place that I did not like. All of the entrees are plated to perfection. The only downside to this restaurant is there decor. They could use a little updating inside and maybe get some better furniture, but if you want good food and quality service, it is worth a stop in. The owners and servers learn who you are by name and welcome you with open arms. Don't forget to ask for the owners famous sangria as well.

I'm so conflicted! We read the good review in Chicago mag and stopped in at 4:30pm. We were the 3rd party in the place. It took about 10 minutes to get menus, then 10 more to place our order. the apps came in about 45 minutes and the entrees about an hour later. Frankly by then I was so crabby on the uncomfortable chairs that I didn't care how cute the place looked or how good the food was. and by the way, the food is only ok. We ordered the special appetizer plate that is 2 each of 3 items. all were teensy weensy, one or 2 bites. I had the shrimp that was recommended in the mag. Skip it! there were 6 teeny shrimp buried under a bitter burnt tasting sauce and were totally overcooked. This was accompanied by about 2 tablespoons of boring flavorless rice. All for 16.95. My hubby loved his steak quesadilla. We will never, never be back. Two hours during which the tvs were on, loud raucus Mexican music and at the same time was a live guitarist playing and singing. I left hungry, crabby to smithereens and disgusted. Too bad too, because they have a few things right, but not enough Go to Mixteco and get a good meal next time.

This yet another place that demonstrates Chicago's command of Mexican cuisine. There were the chips with the spicy salsa to start off. They charge for a second round of chips, but nobody should be making the mistake of eating too many chips before the meal arrives, anyway. We had the appetizer sampler that is mentioned at the front door on the chalkboard. Very enjoyable, and my wife loved the guacamole (I don't like guacamole). I had the pollo en mole for my entre. Great mole sauce. My wife had the shrimp dish which was spectacular. After the dinner we had the sopapilla dish, which also featured some ice cream. Combine the two items and it's delicious. The presentation (or plating, as they call it on Iron Chef) was top notch, and wine by the glass had some really cool stemware that I certainly wasn't expecting. Good stemware really makes a difference. Anyway, next time you are driving down this nondescript part of Milwaukee Avenue and in a food rut, check it out.

Two stars for the dirty glasses they served us water in. There was lipstick on two out of the four glasses. I got a chance to spy on the bartender as he washed them and I'm pretty sure there was no soap involved and positive that he was not inspecting the glasses for cleanliness has he washed. The food was nice, and presented well and the server was polite. The only thing that we had that wasn't good was the tres leches we had for dessert. It had a weird tang to it and it was dry! Unfortunately I couldn't drink anything while we were there due to the disgusting glasses, otherwise it would have been better.

What a neighborhood gem! We've been in to Mom's Old Recipe a few times since it opened, and have enjoyed it every time! I stopped in with my 2 yr old the other night and Tomas ensured that our visit was great as usual. The food is wonderful, and very nicely presented, the atmosphere inside far exceeds the outside, and the musician on the weekends really adds to the experience. The customers are a good mix of families with kids, couples, and just groups of people out for some tasty, well-priced food. Check 'it out and support a new neighborhood place!!!

OMG! When walking in I was a little unsure as it is new, the ac was broken and just 2 other couples dining. BUT... it was awsome. They have a full bar but we stuck to water. We started with the fundito con charizo it was great but the best part was the homemade tortilla that comes with it. The tortilla was as smooth as butter. My husband had the enchilada verde which was beautifully presented and delicious. I had the chile relleno de picadillo. I've never had anything like it before and will be coming back again and again for it. The food is like gourmet mexican. Every thing is freshly made to order so there may be a wait, but well worth it. Can't wait to go back.

Solid Mexican joint with good food and drink options. We tried the mole enchiladas, huevos rancheros, and steak burrito. All were good but steak was a little fatty. I then had the michelada with a dos x very good. Service was good although they got our steak order wrong at first. But then fixed quickly. Sat outside on a nice late summer day and it was fun.

Thanks to Yelp, we found a wonderful, non-fast food, mexican restaurant! We went on a Sunday evening for an authentic Mexican meal. We had the Chile Relleno de Picadil. This is the first Chile Relleno that we had that had a cream sauce. The meat filling was spectacular. Our waiter, Ernesto, said this cream sauce is common in Mexico around the Christmas holidays. The Taco Trio was also quite excellent, The fish taco was a breaded Tilapia with a light slaw base, the steak taco was a little chewy but wonderfully flavorful, The chicken was delightful. It was just enough food for a satisfying meal. A bit on the pricey side but I'll pay a bit more for really fresh food! This restaurant has plenty of street parking. Do not park in the bank parking lot next door, though. The decor is warm and inviting.

I go here all the time. Ther service is fantastic, if you go at odd hours it's even better. When my daughter was a baby they would bring her a special plate of avocado and crackers. I never asked for it, they just brought it : ) From the outside the storefront blends into a long stretch of karate shops and dentist offices. Inside is lovely. The quality of food though is what makes it really special. I spend a lot of time in the Fulton Market and I'll put it out there and say Mom's can go up against some of the best. It's not cheap but the food is fresh and prepared with culinary precision not found in most neighborhood mexican joints. I'm also really happy this place is walking distance from my house because the margaritas are yummy.

Delicious. The best, non greasy Mexican food I've ever had in my life. Enchilada Verde are amazing. Beef tacos scrumptious. Skip the nacho app/dinner just meh. The only and I mean only downside to this place is the incredibly slow, slow, service. They're friendly, but my goodness. Slow! My teen daughters and I were there on a Sunday evening. About half the tables full. After we finally placed our order, we literally had to watch 4 other tables being served, cleaned up and checked out before we got our yumminess. I think that's one of Dante's levels of hell. So if you're drinking margaritas, and have all the time in the world...no biggie. If you wanna eat and vamoose within an hour...save it for another night.

There are some oddities to the place. --One half of the restaurant has different seating decor than the other --Our seating was metal patio seating with brightly colored cushions. --The menu was 3 looseleaf printed pages on white printer paper --Star seating in the windows for those that want to be seen, although it's a quiet stretch of Milwaukee avenue. --wall art that really didn't have a theme or looked good. But --service was great, super friendly. I never requested, but they offered to make a kids meal for my son. cheese quesadilla, beans and rice. --some of the menu items seemed very unique and not at all what I've found at local mexican taco places. For example: pasilla pepper cranberry red wine sauce, bean sauces, house potatoes made with jalapenos and onions. --Ice cold milk creamy horchata --strong flavorful margaritas served on the rocks --smaller portions so we don't feel overstuffed I ordered the Enchiladas Verdes Con Frijoles De Olla, Chicken. Two folded corn tortillas topped with a green tomatillo sauce, romaine lettuce, red onion, sour cream, avocado and Mexican grated cheese. Served with pinto beans. I found it to be a refreshing take on enchiladas. the romaine lettuce added some cool freshness and texture and the green tomatillo sauce was well-flavored. Food is a solid 3, Service elevates it to a 4. Nice place.

My go to neighborhood Mexican restaurant. I've never had a dish that I haven't enjoyed here. The Margaritas are great; one is usually enough for me! The service is always good with attentive servers that don't hover. After you've been there a couple times, it's almost like you're family. Occasionally, you may be surprised by live music.

My wife and I had a craving for some good authenic mexican cuisine and took to yelp. Living in Jefferson Park, there aren't many good sit-down Mexican restraurants. Upon reading the reviews, we decided to try Mom's Old Recipe. It was delicious. The food was pretty good. Both the wife and I ordered tacos. Delicious! 3 tacos each and a side of rice and baked beans. Complimentary chips are served with really spicey salsa. Delicious! Could not pass up on the $5 margaritas! Delicious for the warm summer night. All in all, this place is one of our new favorite restraurants. Definately recommend it!

What a find! I was looking for a place halfway between our place in Old Irving and our friends' place in Park Ridge. Enter Mom's Old Recipe. First, the margaritas were amazing! We split a pitcher. We also split a roasted corn and poblano queso dip. YUM! I had the enchiladas trio. One vegetarian (topped with avocado, cilantro, and red onions), one chicken, and one steak mole. The mole was chocolatey, and in a good way! The green was excellent! Everything tasted so fresh. We split a flan at the end. I can't wait to come back!

Moms Old Recipe is a unique, Mexican restaurant that offers wonderful food, enthusiastic employees and a warm and inviting atmosphere. The owners, Alena and Ana are awesome! Their sister Lety, is a wonderful waitress and makes your meal experience great. I would highly recommend this restaurant to any authentic Mexican food-loving person!

Worth the schlep! Convivial atmosphere, delicious food. The service is very friendly but a bit slow. The huarachitos were yummy, and the camarones al Diablo are fantastic. The wine list is a bargain! We'll be back!

disregard my last review. I left a great review for this place that should have actually been for Tuxpan's I just called and asked for 3 steak tacos with sour cream and cheese. I was going to pick up since they dont deliver. she offered me a special, 3 tacos with rice and beans. I asked how much, she said 15. I asked for how much just for the tacos and she said it would be the same....? Confused I ask "15 dollars for just 3 steak tacos?" she then proceed to tell me something about the meal special and it would be the same because the tacos are "3 dollars a piece plus .75 for sour cream and cheese". I told her I didn't want the special, just the tacos. Aren't specials suppose to be the better deal...? she then lowered me to 11 dollars for the 3 tacos. I just ended up cancelling. I never had their food and unsure if I want too.

This was better than expected. It failed the native test, ie how many Mexicans are eating there (none). I got the mole enchiladas and the mole sauce was fantastic. It was sweet and rich. As for the service, they were attentive but not overbearing. They appeared exactly when we were out of something or done. We will be coming back again!

We stumbled on Mom's by accident. The hubs and I were craving some Mexican food and were not really feeling TBK (Taco Burrito King), which is near the area. After searching on Yelp, we discovered Mom's in Norwood Park. What a gem! There was not much around it so I wasn't expect it to be so lively! As we walked in we were greeted by live music and the place was packed! A lot of large groups and families, which was nice to see. Loved the ambiance. The chips were freshly baked and the salsa - it had an interesting twist to it. I might be interpreting it differently but it was almost as if it had some asian influence - reminded me of a hint of kimichi spice). I ordered the Tilapia tacos and the hubs ordered Skirt Steak tacos. BEST steak tacos I've tried in a long time - hands down. The fried tilapia I thought was okay, a little overpowering. It was a large portion, but it almost felt like I was eating the fried tilapia by itself and the tortilla, seasonings, sauce got lost somewhere. The rice was good though - fluffy and flavorful. It looked like everyone around me had a margarita so I ended up ordering a House Margarita on the rocks myself and it was fantastic- I ended up ordering two! And boy were they strong! By the time the bill came around we were so surprised to find out Friday nights were $5 Margs. (I should have ordered three!) So excited to have found Mom's- a great Mexican restaurant in the area with good food, tasty drinks, and fun atmosphere.

From the moment we walked in .. Great experience. Greeted and seated quickly. The appetizers were fresh and delicious as my photos show. Our dishes were outstanding ...for appetizers We had a combination plate of mini flautas, quesadillas and huaraches .. Our entrees consisted of Chicken tostadas and cheeses enchiladas. Our doses were presented top notch but the overall all flavors were fabulous ...The salsa is sooo delicious. This is a home recipe restaurant. Hence the name. I highly recommend the drive here and you will comeback for sure!!!!

I have come to realize I have a thing for chef owned, independent operators. I sit here and watch the owner do everything, she loves it and she cares. Today she is my waitress while keeping an eye on the kitchen through the four by four window towards the back. She also makes a hell of a margarita. As I sit and await my skirt steak combo I will tell you that the shrimp ceviche salad I just enjoyed may have been the best tasting thing ever to meet my tongue . The crisp veggie amuse and the chips and salsa are as great and unique as this place itself. Come on northwest corridor of the city, this is the place for Mexican. #eatlocaleatgreatfood

I have passed by here several times and wondered how it was but never stopped! Then early this week, my friend said "Let's go to that little Mexican restaurant down the block." Walking in, I was impressed with the decor and the server who greeted us was very friendly. Our food was delicious and was served hot and plated beautifully for presentation! Now, I was going to leave this out but I believe it is important... My friend had the misfortune of finding a fruit fly in her food. We questioned if we should leave or stay. We opted to stay as we know that in the food industry unforeseen things happen and it wasn't a dirty insect that would make us believe the place was unsanitary. We politely showed the waitress and she was more than apologetic. She offered to take it off the bill but we asked that another plate be made. When the bill came, she comped the entree altogether and offered us complimentary dessert which we declined. We will definitely be back and believe it would be a great place to have a nice event such as a birthday party or baptismal party. Check it out! The Norwood Park/Jeffferson Pk doesn't have much to choose from for good eating so, stop passing this place up and stop in!

My daughter wanted to write a review so here it is: Street parking only. Very busy Saturday early night. All of the tables were filled. The service is OK but a little slow. I loved the spicy shrimp and the steak taquitos. We thought that the fish taco wasn't very good. The inside of the restaurant was cool and interesting I liked it. My family loved the rice and beans they were really good.

There's plenty of Mexican places to visit over this one. We picked up an online order and the place seemed nice. My gf and I appreciated some of the art. The staff seemed nice and were quick to get us our food. However, I got enchiladas which were not very good. Plus, we asked for some things to be done which they seemed to just disregard. My gf liked her tacos, but I don't think they were anything to write home about. And their enchiladas were a joke. They were closer to Chinese food than Mexican. Also, it took us some time to find their menu online, and it seems to need some updating. The price definitely wasn't appropriate for what we received.

We go here at least once a month and have never left disappointed. Margaritas are great and chips and salsa are my favorite anywhere. I seem to be stuck ordering the Enchiladas Trio most visits because I simply can't get enough of it....three totally different tastes in one plate. My wife moves around the menu a bit more and has always been happy with her choices. Always good service and a nice place whether out on a date or out with family and kids.

Couldn't decide if I should go 3 or 4 stars. Place looks like a dump from the outside. Walk in and it was fantastic. Charming, clean and fresh. I'd give our waiter 5 stars The Chips were awesome but the salsa was too hot to eat - I wish they would have given 2 kinds of salsa. For an appetizer we had the Sampler - Two huarachitos, two mini cheese quesadillas, two mini chicken flautas and guacamole. The Guacamole was fantastic. I would order that if given another chance The quesadillas were fried - I did not care for them. I had the Enchiladas Ranchera. Two folded corn tortillas stuffed with your choice of chicken or ground beed topped with a Mom's unique tomato non-spicy sauce, melted Chihuahua cheese and sour cream. Served with rice and refried beans. I went with the non spicy item since their salsa was too hot for me. It was a bit on the bland side and the Chihuahua cheese was almost non existent. The beans were very bland as was the rice. The place was packed and I would give it another try based on the ambiance, our fantastic waiter, and the Guacamole and chips.

The three were delicious and surprisingly filling considering the small portions. I decided to add some dessert so I had a coconut ice cream with some masa crumbs which I found very tasty. Overall we had a great time at Topo and I forgot to say that the staff was very friendly.

Super tasty and authentic Mexican food! Cozy spot with excellent margaritas. One star is removed because I felt like the prices were a little high compared to other Mexican restaurants. Parking can get tricky on Fridays and Saturdays. Wish it was a tad more affordable and I would be there at least once a week!!!

Went on a Tuesday night, restaurant was quiet with only a few tables occupied. We weren't sure what to expect since we live just a few minutes away and have never noticed it before. Pleasantly surprised! Good, fresh Mexican with a bit of gourmet twist. I had the 3 enchilada combo which was tasty and fresh. My husband had fish tacos. They use a fried Tilapia which was slightly over fried...would have preferred a fresh grilled fish taco. Atmosphere is kitsch Mexican, but warm. We will go back soon and try more entrees for sure!

Keeping the place at five stars, where it belongs. I stopped in yesterday for a quick late lunch and tried the shrimp tacos. They were outstanding. I was a little nervous that they were going to be fried, but that was not a problem at all. Each of the two tacos came with two very large shrimp which were butterflied before breading, so there was plenty of actual shrimp on each taco. The shrimp were cradled in cabbage with just the right amount of a creamy salsa/sauce in fresh tortillas. Delicious! I should also mention another recent trip I made here, with my wife for dinner. I had the combination of the skirt steak and the tequila shrimp. The steak was awesome, but the tequila shrimp, dripping with pan sauces and caramelized bits of garlic, put it to shame. Just incredible food at this place, every time I show up.

Outstanding! It was a cold Wednesday in March, but our friends knew what to do. They took us to a warm and inviting Mom's Old Recipe Mexican Restaurant to cure the winter blues. It is now going to be our 'go-to' place for mexican cuisine. From the outside it is unassuming, but once inside you are pleasantly surprised to see incredible art work on the walls, tables well-set, and a lovely fully-stocked bar. All very charming. Now to the food: authentic, flavorful, and abundant. As luck would have it, co-owner Malena, waited on our table of four and made the food to order. We had a variety of menu items: the guacamole, the enchilada mole, the taco trio, and the lemon tilapia and all were top-notch. And of course, we had some great mexican beer &margaritas to accompany our meal. A good find on Milwaukee Avenue! You feel appreciated as a customer and are treated like family.

I thought the ambience was wonderful the waitresses were very very friendly very accommodating. The food was out of this world I had the steak quesadillas to die for and my friend had the shrimp tacos that were out of this world. I would go back again and again and again! In the hot chocolate is a must!

We drive by this quant mexican restaurant everyday and we always see people inside. So we decided to give it a try. We started with the guacamole and chips and salsa, which were very delicious. However, here comes the bad part. Firstly, I thought it was strange how there weren't many latinos in this restaurant. And all through the main course I realized why. My father ordered the steak enchiladas with mole that tasted slightly bitter. My mother ordered the steak taco dinner, and the steak tasted almost like tongue or lengua. It was very chewy and had a funny taste. I ordered the enchilada and burrito combo, my enchilada was just cheese and was good (this is very hard to mess up) my burrito was ground beef and tasted as if it was from a microwave package. Overall the rice and beans were average, the portions were very small for the price. Three dinners and one horchata cost $50.00. Everyone who thinks this is good authentic mexican food has never had it. If you're truly seeking good mexican food give Garcias on Western a try. In some, the food was mediocre and over priced.

This place can be easily be missed, which is why driving on Milwaukee a million times I just passed it on by. The food was good, not great but good. I had enchiladas verdes with Frijoles de la jolla. The verde sauce was spicy. The beans, probably the best thing served from my whole meal. My husband had the enchiladas rancheras. He hated them, I tried them and it was okay. The "skirt steak" was chopped finely and the sauce had a funky taste to it. He refused to touch the refried beans and rice, once again I took one for the team and they were mushy and the rice over seasoned. We did have the guac, it was good but I prefer more lime. Chips were good. All in all it was good, will I go back probably, but not anytime soon.

This place is a diamond in the rough. You could never tell from the signage what Mexican feast awaits you within the tastefully appointed dinning room. My wife and I dropped in early as they opened for Valentines Day supper. The service was outstanding only to be outdone by the entrée's delivered to the table. Portions are generous but by no means oversized. The Carne Asada was worth every penny. We will be back!

I really want to like this place. The decor and atmosphere are very cute. It's a cozy little Mexican place with a full bar, so I'm thinking great margaritas, right ? Wrong. Margaritas were disappointing and so was the food. Nothing tasted fresh, seemed like a lot of thing, even sauces came out of a can. Unfortunately I cannot give this place a good review. The search for a good Mexican place on the Northwest side continues. ( I miss you Tanzitaros :( )

Ok, I really liked this place. Of the suburban places I've been to, Tamales in highland park is still my favorite but this place is second for sure. In fact, they are probably tied.... I like the salsa, it is a house made and unique. I loved it. But I love Tamale's salsa too and Tamale's takes it Guacamole is totally awesome at Mom's Old Recipe and beats Tamales. We had a combo app that was solid and we enjoyed it. I had mole....In order of my favorite Moles Tarascas in the city Tamales Mom's old recipe some mexican joint on clark st which I can not recall the name. All other mexican places I've tried have mediocre mole not worth trying. hubbie had carne asada and thought it was good kids enjoyed their quesadillas over the ones at tamales...but they r 5 & 7...when they get older, i bet that would change to tamales i have never been to frontera...hence it is not making my list

We just moved into the neighborhood and discovered this place right away. The food is delicious and the service is decent. The fare is upscale classic Mexican. We are always looking for an excuse to go and get dinner here. My only criticism is that the beer selection is quite limited however the margaritas are good.

  • V P.

My husband & I (& other family) have been here more than half a dozen times and the food has never disappointed. I usually order enchiladas made with the salsa they give with their chips- love it! Very authentic- it reminds me of my Mom's recipe. My husband has ordered the mole & other entrees and has always been happy. There have been times when the service was a little slower but the end result was worth it. In my opinion the portions are perfectly sized as we almost always have left overs. It's unfair to compare MOR & their portion sizes to a fast food Mexican restaurant as the food is better quality & meant to be enjoyed there- not meant to be fast food. I'd almost rather refrain from reviewing as I'd rather not have this place get too crazy busy but we deserve a great sit down Mexican restaurant in Jeff park. See you there soon!

The steak mole enchiladas and skirt steak tacos are amazing! By far my favorite. Courteous service and a clean, sophisticated atmosphere. Great casual date night and good local Mexican restaurant for the northwest side of the city.

MOR is a solid 5 stars. The food and service are excellent. For those that complained about the portions, you should look at the prices - they are more than fair for the quality. If you want a lot of cheap greasy food go somewhere else - this is yummy and decent portions for the right price. We ordered the shrimp cocktail - fresh and tasty, the tortilla soup - very original and authentic, fish tacos and the skirt steak as entrees; I don't eat steak often, but this one was ridiculously good, and since it was my birthday, my husband had to give me half. I used to always get the enchiladas verdes which were always the best. Just one request on the music - press shuffle please.

It's a bad day when I give one of my favorite cuisines a 2. Ambiance: We walked in and it's definitely a very cute space, warm and cozy, with a bit of funk. I'm loving it. Complimentary Starters: Pickled veggies and salsa. The salsa was for lack of better word interesting. It had more of a fishy taste or a "what's missing" element more than anything. The veggies were actually quite nice. Starters: Shrimp Ceviche. This was indeed fresh and my favorite food of the entire evening. It had the write amount of onions, tomatoes, cilantro, and lime. Oh quite tasty. Then came our entrees and the continued downward spiral. Fish Tacos: This was two huge fried fish filets thrown on top of two small tortillas with a secret sauce. The fish tasted like the fish the frozen fish in the yellow box you may have eaten as a kid. The secret sauce was interesting as well. I guess it in short the pieces did not work together for the best. Shrimp Ajillo: The description is: shrimp soaked in garlic and pepper, mixed with a cranberry wine sauce. This was AWFUL. The sauce went wrong and the flavor left the building. I couldn't and still can't put my finger on what happened. The sauce was thick and chunky.. possibly as if it was overcooked and then left to sit. Even the presentation did not look appealing. I guess for as long as it took to come out and as much as it was, I was expecting something very, very different. To add insult to injury, the person asked me how it was, and I said it wasn't good at all and she could take it. She asked me did I want to take it home. *scratches head*. What we also found interesting was that how all of the staff was sitting around the bar drinking, eating, and chatting each other up as if they were on break or off. It felt very unprofessional. With all that said, the server was not bad and not great. She made sure that our water glasses were filled and when she brought the check she took off the shrimp ajillo although we insisted on paying for it. Would I come back.. ehh probably only for the ceviche.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
