I can't believe I have not reviewed this stalwart of Chicago eateries before now. If you have a hankering for comfort food, have a discerning palate and your own preferred cook is off-duty, head over to Ms. Lee's. You won't be sorry. Probably best restaurant in Chicago at the moment specializing in Southern cuisine, better known here as Soul Food. Street parking is extremely limited on Sundays, so be prepared. Order by phone if you can or get ready to wait. Only take-out. Menu-by-day offerings only. If you desire smothered chicken on Sunday, and it's not on the menu, come back on the assigned day. The food is consistently great. As close to delicious homemade as one will find. Fresh, not overly seasoned, consistent. I can say this after 10 years of patronage. You can check out the reviews for odes to the standards, e.g., fried chicken, smothered chops, the DRESSING (aaaaahhhh, that DRESSING and not stuffing), fresh potato salad and cobblers. However, the real treat is the occasional gumbo Ms. Lee lovingly prepares. As a gumbo fan, when I don't get homemade, I will venture out to sample around town. Trust me on this: if you know homemade gumbo - especially as it is typically prepared by Louisiana (Creole) descendants - you will be hard-pressed to find one better than Ms. Lee's in any local eatery. That includes ANY of the fancy and/or big name spots downtown or on the north side. I welcome anyone to compare and get back to me on their findings. Ms. Lee does it around Easter and while costly ($30), it is the real deal. Crab, shrimp, oysters ... It's fantastic! This is a place I take out-of-town visitors who want Southern cuisine. Again, it's take-out but not once has anyone been short of praise. When they return to Chicago, Ms. Lee's is automatically on the itinerary. Seriously! Don't be surprised at who you see, especially on Sundays, as Ms. Lee's delectable dishes are only part of the draw. As a star veteran of the city's restaurant community, she is dearly admired on Chicago's South Side. Just as with predecessor, the formerly great Gladys', celebrities and notable others come from near and far. Ms. Lee, with her silver halo framing her always ready charming smile and big greeting is a looker, too! I can't say enough about Ms. Lee's. I appreciate the fact that she has remained loyal to the South Side when clearly she could be elsewhere, probably making more money. She employs a capable, fast and service-oriented team. The food is always on point to-the-crumb. She and her eatery are the stuff of legends.

aww man.. please don't knock a restaurant for it's hood. the restaurant cannot control anything outside it's doors. if anything, wouldn't it seem to be harder to maintain such a quality place considering the location, where yes, drug dealers don't care about you. and do you really care about the drug dealers elisabeth? if you would maybe you should give them some business. anyways, yes. this place completely kicks ass. hands down my fave soul food joint i've had in the city. biscuits are getting weird but the smothered baked and herbal chicken are pure bliss, as are the perfect collards, sweet red beans and the complimentary stuffing. be still my enlarged heart. you will eat very well here. (well, it's take-out only, so you will eat well in your car or at home or perhaps face first in a takeout container as you walk down the street, avoiding those downright thoughtless corner boys)

Oh, my lord! This is the most amazing soul food I've ever had. If you go, you must try the "herbal" chicken, the collards, the yellow turnips, and most importantly, the peach cobbler. The peach cobbler will kill you, but you'll die with a smile. I can't give Miss Lee's 5 stars, because the area is kinda sketchy so be careful if you go there. The corner boys by the pawn shop are just selling drugs, they don't care about you, it's not a place where you'll want to dilly dally! The inside decor is not much to speak of, either, but it's only take-out so who cares? Miss Lee herself is a very nice lady, and the other people who work there are also very nice, and whoever does the cooking has got a divine gift. If you live in Hyde Park, get yourself over to the other side of Washington Park, pronto! You'll love this food!!

Ms. Lee came out and took care of my Mothers order personally. Very good food, the best spinach I've ever had, delicious huge catfish fillets. My wife loved the spaghetti but I found it to be a bit too sweet. My only real complaint is that it's a bit expensive for the neighborhood. But the flavor did not disappoint .

Gosh, I need to get back here. Back when I commuted between Hyde Park to the Southwest Side as a teacher, I'd jump off the 55 at Indiana to get some Miss Lee's when I didn't know where dinner would otherwise come from. Now that I'm a student at the university and am constantly surrounded by other students terrified of the greater South Side, my Miss Lee's consumption has tapered off. The food is absolutely terrific. Hands down, it's the best soul food I've found on this green earth. Recalling the pickled beets nearly brings tears to my eyes. But generally, I haven't yet ordered something that wasn't delicious. Logistically, it's one of the more difficult things. If you order in person, expect to wait a long time (20-30 minutes maybe). The establishment is take-out only, and the neighborhood outside is quite a tough one. Probably the best way to go is to phone in your order and pick up your food to take home. Sounds like a lot, but I would never be able to cook these dishes nearly this well.

Great food! Great service! It may not have all the bells and whistles of a formal dining restaurant but the food will make up for it!

I hate to give Miss Lee a 2-star review, but I'm from the Soul Food tradition of Miss Melanie in Memphis, TN, and have to say that everything from the fried chicken to the mac and cheese and spaghetti, was just alright. It was fresh, but not super tasty or well seasoned. Chicken was juicy, but also really greasy like Church's, but not as seasoned. It's really clean and close to U Chicago, this is the North, and if you want to taste some examples of Soul food, try Miss Lee's Good food. Then write about it! My taste buds are just used to the very, very seasoned (lots of pork, sugar, margarine and butter, hot sauce, garlic and black pepper) food of the South, so I admit my review is off and skewed. I've experienced better, though, and that's Yelp's 2-Star rating system. To be fair, I gave it a 3 star review, however.

Haven't had a bad meal here yet. I started coming here about six years ago when I moved in the area. Miss Lee was such a sweetheart. She cares about food and her customers and clients. Beats all other soul food joints!

Miss Lee's Good Food...IS GOOD!!!... First, I heard but wasn't sure that Miss Lee was a part of that Cooking dynasty of Soul Food called "Gladys'"!!?... I found out when I had one of the Biscuits!! OMG!!!! YES!!!! Yes, she is!!!!. I will NEVER forget the biscuits!!!.. I had the roast beef & dressing...My wife had Short Ribs & potatoes.. The sides were AWESOME... Mac& Cheese...done RIGHT!!!...and the Collard Greens were not greasy...JUST RIGHT!!!!...The sides were just AWESOME(...did I say that ??) ..Indeed.. but the meats were lacking...the crowd was kinda getting on Miss Lees' nerves. Not the people but the speed of the workers. They couldn't keep up with the crowd that was building up faster than they could get the food done. A little patience is needed but when you wrap ya lips around the food!!??! OMG ,,it brought back good, fond. memories when I tasted that biscuit!!! The sides are the Tops but the meat SO far is lacking. I think I'll be visiting Miss Lee's again..I mean I GOTTA go back for some o' dose biscuits!! (smh, omg)!!

I love this place. The greens are delicious; so are the red beans, cabbage and everything else. It has to be the best soul food in the city.

Great soul food take out spot! The herbal chicken comes as pan grilled (no breading).pieces of boneless meat, mildly spicy, well seasoned with onions and green peppers over white rice. Almost like a stir fry. Not greasy at all and VERY flavorful. I also had the yellow turnips and greens. FANTASTIC. The yellow turnips are mildly sweet...nice! No meet in greens. Husband got fried catfish ...2 large fillets with two mac and cheese and greens. We love this place and will definitely go back. My only complaint was the corn muffins which were very dry and dense. Peach Cobbler...YUM! I'll try the biscuits next time. We called ahead and drove over in 20 minutes and our order was already finished and waiting for us...and food was still hot when we got home. We are fans!

SUPPORT SMALL BUSINESSES!!!!!!Don't be scared to take a half step into the hood to get some freaking awesome and delicious southern comfort food! Miss Lee is the sweetest lady ever and her food is to die for. Turkey wing dinner was great. Smothered pork chops were great as well. Most everything come with your choice of 2 sides for a reasonable price. !!!!!! Dessert was mouth pleasuring too.

This is the best southern food I've had in Chicago. Her turnips are my favorite: savory and a little bit sweet. Her collards are perfect. The herbal baked chicken is wonderful. It's spicy and flavorful. Her pies are good, though I never have enough room. I love going here-- just call in your order so you don't have to wait.

Miss Lee, Miss Lee, Miss Lee What can I say? The food is excellent. I always get the herbal or baked chicken with corn and greens. I recently ordered biscuits in stead of corn bread with my meal and they are to die for. They taste just like your grandmother's biscuits from back in the day. They also have a jungle juice Miss Lee let a couple of people in the waiting area taste. That was good as well. Miss Lee gets much respect from me. She is super old and still in the back cooking good food and preparing orders. She has great customer service and remembers her customers by name. I must admit the food is over priced but I would go there over some of the other restaurants in that neighborhood any day.

I love Miss Lee's! It is so darn hard to find an authentic soul food place in Chicago. First, the woman who took my order was very friendly. Second, the food was delicious and third, the portions were generous! I ordered the smothered chops with dressing. You get two chops that are so darn tender you don't even need a knife. Fallin off the bone tender. The collards are meatless but that's okay they were cooked PERFECTLY, tasted and looked fresh. My other side was spaghetti which I enjoyed too. My dinner came with the option of a muffin or biscuit. I ordered a biscuit and received 2 plus jelly! I was more than impressed and can't wait to go back to try their other dishes.

Fantastic soul food- the kind where you get that second helping even when you know you shouldn't. FOOD +Mac and Cheese - Super creamy. It almost had an eggy flavor to it, and this was my favorite by far. +Biscuits- Oh my god simply amazing. I had two and I could have kept going... +Banana Pudding - Just the right amount of sweet and it had those cute little vanilla wafers that made the pudding absolutely amazing! -Fried Chicken - The chicken was juicy and fresh. The only problem I had was that it wasn't flavorful enough. It needed more seasoning for me. -Cornbread - I tend to like my cornbread on the sweet side, so I wasn't a huge fan. I also thought the corn bread was a little dry.
