A neighborhood must!! Great food and great atmosphere! I had a gyro and it was DELICIOUS! Definitely will be back soon!

I love this place having recently discovered it. Great burger, freshly made, terrific fries (I'm dying to try the Big Daddy). Very friendly people who work there. Always greet you warmly and make you feel that they are glad you're there. The other day I had a terrible experience at Thai Bowl (ignored for 10 minutes while I sat there watching them make some sort of blender smoothie for a group of high school students with no acknowledgement that I was even there). In frustration and hunger, I walked down to Johnny's. Was greeted warmly, had a great burger, and, out of the blue, they gave me a free chocolate chip cookie. Hey Thai Bowl, that's how you run a restaurant!

Friendly staff, great food. I especially love the chicken gyro and Italian beef there.

My search for the ultimate Italian Beef continues. In the past I have traveled through hell and high water looking for the best beef. I remember back in January, I traveled many miles by bus in -1 degree weather to Joe Bostons, It was worth it. Today was not a "hell and high water" kind of day. Sunny and cool. My beef adventures brought me to Johnny's Beef and Gyros, not to be confused with the cult spot of Johnnies in Elmwood Park. My order consisted of my usual beef ordering: Cheesy Beef, sweet, dipped. I could tell Gonella Bread but the beef was not house made. The peppers tasted a little weird, not as sweet and juicy as others. However the beef itself was a solid beef. The meat tasted decent for non house made beef. Good cheese and bread. My only complaints are the weird peppers and dip that Shit a little more. I like my beefs dripping wet! It's still nothing close to Mr. Beef on Harlem (my fave) but solid for this part of town. The best beef in Lincoln Park and one of the best options East of Western Avenue. Have you noticed most of the best beefs are out west? Johnnies, Mr. Beef on Harlem, Joe Bostons, Jays. Anywho, Solid service, a free cookie for a Yelp Check-In, and a solid beef make this a go-to-spot in Lincoln Park, all for $10. 3.8 stars.

Their Greek fries are absolutely delicious!! Pair them with a milkshake and it's the perfect indulgence. Aside from their salads, the rest of the food is prepared as you wait. The gyros are HUGE! And good! Not just a great place to get a bite to eat after crawling along Lincoln in the late hours, but also a perfect place to get a bite to eat anytime during the day.

Johnny's was a pretty good. The menu is very big. It's filled with different burgers and beefs. They also have different side orders and a variety of salads. The inside is nice. They have plenty of seating and a TV, which a plus. The man at the register was really nice also. I got their special "Big Daddy" burger along with some bacon cheese fries. The presentation of the burger was really nice. It was clean and not messy at the beginning. But after digging in like a man, I couldn't help but make a mess of it. I personally thought it was too much meat and it didn't really accomplish a distinct flavor. Everyone else said the food was pretty standard. The burgers looked like Sonic burgers. The hot dogs were normal hot dogs. The fries tasted like normal French fries. Everything was pretty basic and not out of the ordinary for a burger joint. If that's what you're craving in the moment, then this is a good place but you're just going to spend a little more. Overall, I wish I could give 3.5 stars but 3 will have to do.

This place is great. Friendly staff and the food is really good. Lots of different choices. Try the Greek fries with an italian beef and a malt milkshake. The shakes here are the bomb! Love this place.

Beautiful restaurant with really reasonable prices! The vibe is kind of 50's style diner, but more mod and fresh. The food is excellent. Lots of classics with a twist like the greek style fries (lemon, feta) or the cheddar bacon fries. Some of our favorites are the chicken pita and gyro. Everything is fresh and the portions are pretty big! Don't skip the chocolate chip cookie for dessert...it's pretty good! We are personally not brave enough to try the Big Daddy Burger, but if you are, there is a photo wall of fame that you might be able to get your picture on! It's two burger patties, plus toppings, plus gyro meat! Located on Lincoln at a great intersection across from John Barleycorn making it super easy to grab food and go. There are also a few dine in tables. My only complaint is that you have to be super tall to check your teeth in the bathroom mirror after you eat! Or maybe just taller than 5'4"....

My first gyro and it was ahhhhhhhhhmazing! My fiance had a char burger and it was quite tasty as well. Super friendly owner and staff, highly recommend! :)

2 hot dogs fries & drink $8.80 Way too much for the food you get. I asked to put cheese and bacon on fries, they said an additional charge of $3.50 no thanks Get your prices in check Johnny.......

Love this place, the food is always on point. Eric is the best cashier ever! I got to meet Johnny himself, which is pretty cool, he personally made my salad. Hopefully one day I'll be hungry enough to take on the big daddy challenge and win lol. I recommend the big daddy, and the chicken salad. They are to die for!

Johnny's is superb. It is the epitome of what I want and what you and everybody wants in a neighborhood joynt. Places similar to Johnny's are often referred to greasy spoons. Don't ever use the phrase greasy spoon when referring to Johnny's, that would be sacrilegious. Lakeview is really fortunate to have a joynt like this, that has a very simple menu, high quality products, fair prices, and a staff that takes your order down correctly the first time because they are intelligent, courteous to the customers, and really listen to the customer. Let's be honest, it is that simple formula that will keep me and hopefully you coming back on a regular basis to Johnny's Beef & Gyro. Let's start with the hotdog. What is not to love about that comes with free with orders over $10.00 and the coupon. It a a perfect dog, really, seriously it brought a tear to my eye. The bun covered in poppy seeds and steamed, the dog was nothing but the best Vienna has to offer. The toppings that was easy..... of course I went with everything which because of the sport peppers may have caused the tear in my eye that I wrote of earlier. The dog came wrapped nice and tight in white butcher paper without one spot grease, ketchup, or mustard. It was pure Chicago greatness. The Italian beef combo with a nice meaty juicy dipped Gonella Bread, mozzarella, sweet peppers is the absolute way to go. To tell you more would take away the experience of putting one of these in your mouth. It is a must have! It is also accompanied by a perfect size cup of right off the vine red sauce. The Gyros platter is wonderful. The pita bread is top notch, the meat is juicy and sliced generously, I got mine with feta cheese, onions, tomatoes, cucumber, and a tzatziki sauce recipe that I wanna know. Let's not leave out the fries because Johnny's would not be a joynt without perfectly cooked to order French fries. This place is a Lakeview gem. It's a real treat to know that outside of tourist traps you get some serious Chicago Food at really fair prices and they deliver..... Heaven has been found at Johnny's Beef & Gyro!

So this was my first visit. Ordered 2 Gyros Sandwiches. There was enough food for 4-people. They were huge, thick as a baseball bat. Also ordered a Cobb Salad, this was surely made for sharing. Dressing came on the side. Which was perfect as I had a 2 hour drive before we would be eating everything. When I arrived home the Gyros were still hot. This place is so worth the drive into to the city. Can't wait to come to city again to eat here. Hope they have many years of business. Telling everyone I know who lives in the city, this is the PLACE for GYROS. One thing I almost forgot to mention I he Tzatziki Sauce is homemade, one of the best I've tasted, nice and thick. This is a Must Visit if your visiting Chicago. Come HUNGARY

Awesome stuff. Great food, quick service, and a really friendly staff. The chili cheese fries are amazing and the italian beef was one of the best I've had in the city. I already can't wait to go back.

Alright now folks, let's take it easy here with the perfect 5 star average Yelp rating (now down to 4 1/2 stars....Thank God). Must be a bunch of fake "startup" reviews to help this place get noticed and get people to come in. I don't mean to be a Debbie Downer or anything but really, this place isn't as good as the reviews indicate. Now it isn't that bad either, but there's definitely better food out there. Let's start with the Italian Beef. The place is called Johnny's Beef so you figure their Italian Beef will probably be their best or one of their best sandwiches that they have to offer.....right? Well...It was alright. It was kind of small and not really that cheap and not that hot. I'd rather have a Portillo's Italian Big Beef for the same price and more food and even slightly better quality. But hey, it is better than Al's Beef, that's for sure. Next is the Philly Steak. I ordered it with Marinara sauce and asked for no onions and peppers. It's called a Pizza Steak. It's pretty good when done right and it's pretty damn easy to make. What do I get? A side of cold marinara sauce and an extra $.75 charge. Who the hell charges extra for marinara sauce, especially when I'm saving them money by not getting 2 of the other ingredients on the sandwich. Desperate douchebags. The third time I came here I had the Chicago Dog and a Regular French Fries. The Hot Dog was warm, bland and not fresh and the fries just simply sucked. Basically, the food here is never really that fresh. Probably because it's never busy and they always have food just lying around getting old. Oh well. Sucks to suck. Overall, there's really nothing about this place that makes it worthy of having a 4 1/2 star average on Yelp. The Food isn't 4 1/2 stars. The Atmosphere isn't 4 1/2 stars. The Service isn't 4 1/2 stars. I guess if you've never ate here before, go for it. Because the place isn't going to be around for long. I guarantee that.

Checked this place out on their grand opening expecting a simple easy selection of "fast food" This place is "fast food" on steroids. I tried the gyro and first of all it was the biggest gyro I have ever had in my life, and my god was it amazing. My fiancee had the italian beef.... wow. This place is amazing.... THE PARMESAN TRUFFLE FRIES ARE A MUST!!!!! OMG they are like something you would order at a five star restaurant so frickin' good. We tried the Greek Fries too! wow so Good the feta cheese with a hint of lemon zest. amazing... This place also has a great atmosphere, perfect local Chicago vibe. Def my new favorite late not spot in Lincoln Park. I highly recommend this place to anyone looking for some awesome comfort food after a night of drinking, whether its late night style or the morning after to cure your hang over. Johnny's is a must!

My first impression when i walked in to the place was a great one. I was welcome with a friendly staff and a giant mural of their famous Big Daddy burger. I ordered an Italian Beef with mozz , sweet peppers and the lemon feta fries and let me tell ya, amazing! Everything was so tasty and left me wanting more! I will definitely be back as im excited to try more items on their menu. Welcome to the neighborhood Johnny's!!

Simply put the food is fast and reliably great. I live in the north burbs and come down to Lincoln park 1 time a week for a Thursday night class. Since I come straight from work I'm usually very hungry and can't wait until after class to eat. I've made Johnny's my Thursday night dinner now for the past few months. I park my car grab either a salmon sandwich, chili (now that it's freezing out), or a spicy black bean burger with cheese fries. Those are a few of my favorites because they are fast, consistently delicious, and satisfies me before class.

Such a great addition to the neighborhood. Popped in during the afternoon yesterday and was greeted by a young man, who I assume was the owner, and helped me choose what I would eat for the day. A delicious, perfectly cooked Chicken Girlled Sandwich. For a side I tried their Greek Fries, nice big portion and covered in feta cheese. Definitely coming back. Welcome to the hood!

I am a DePaul studnet (note that I wrote Stud Net and not student, because I do not actually atten DePaul I just catch all the studs that go there in my carnal net ;) and I decided to give this place a shot despite its clean appearance. The servers here were extremely friendly and the service was efficient. Shout out to the server with a recycling heart tattoo on his forearm who was cool but turned down my offer to let me recycle his juices, better luck next time I guess. Oh, and if you're in the mood for an Gyro and are deciding between this place and the nearby Athenian Room (infamous for being Tina Fey's favorite place) go here and tell scarface to cram it. Also, the only problem I had while here is there soda fountain does that double shot thing where it puts extra fizz in your cup so you get less soda but I can't take a star away for that since I know it's Obama and his Jackbooted Thugs trying to limit my options as an American to become as obese to the point that it's a burden to others. In conclusion, the meal was good.

This review is solely for the Italian Beef. This place is called "Johnny's Beef and Gyros" so you would think they would have good I Beef. Well, it SUCKED. Worst i've had in Chicago. Plus, they charge extra for peppers. How could you have an Italian Beef sandwich without peppers? Kinda weak. Maybe other stuff is better.

Dont get the Italian Beef... it shouldn't even be on the menu... The frozen crap at the grocery store is better.

Edzo's was closed, so we decided to take our hunger down the street to Johnny's. This review is scientifically proven through subjective mathematical means Edzo's*60%= Johnny's 3/5= 60% Therefore 3 stars The burger here prettay prettay good. Pattys weren't dry, toppings were fresh enough, and a decent amount of grease. I wouldn't get the bacon on the burger in the future, it was 2 dollars more and kind of rubbery. My companion had the spicy black bean burger that had a nice amount of spice, not dried out, and overall wasn't half bad. The staff was friendly, quick, and did a nice job resolving a mixup in our order. On Fridays they even throw in a free cookie (you cant go wrong!) The fries weren't that great, wouldn't recommend splurging on the special fries unless your diet requires it (I got the bacon cheddar fries, eh).

  • Robert H.

A solid Gyro and Burger joint. It can be a little over priced. The gyro was really good, but not worth $7 for one, when I can get one for $5 after tax at Zeus in Greektown. Have yet to try the Big Daddy Burger. Overall, a decent place to go if you're in the mood for quality American food.

Terrible management and organization. I just placed an order 45 minutes ago (11/7/2014) and after giving them my address and payment everything was good to go for delivery within the hour. I anxiously waited 40 minutes to get my food and when I saw a call from an unknown number I was excited that my food is at the door....NO, instead they called to tell me I'm out of their delivery area!! It took 40 minutes to figure that out?!!!??? IDIOTS! Never again!

Hey G.R. Have you been living under a rock moron? Johnnys doesn't only have incredible service, their Italian beef is next to none. I have never walked into this place without a warm smile and delicious food. Johnny and his brother not only put out a delicious product in a dying neighborhood but they go out of their way to get to know every customer who comes in. I have had about 90% of their menu and have not had one bad thing. G.R. Keep living under a rock and hating your life because you obviously do not know how to rate good food

Delicious food and awesome service! Part of my order wasn't delivered (to be fair I had an obnoxiously complicated order) and when I called to let them know, Johnny himself got on the phone to let me know it was already on its way.

  • Steve K.

I've never had a bad meal here. Italian beef, burgers, hot dogs, salads...all are spot on. Gyros is insane! Truffle fries, really? And they're open late. I think you can order delivery, but thankfully I'm close enough to just pop in. Definitely an oasis of really really good fast food in a sea of crappy sandwhich shops, bar food, and chain stores. Feeling brave? Try the Big Daddy...I've had it once, rediculous (it can save your life at 3am), but I'm not man enough for the Big Daddy Challenge yet. Leave it to the Greeks to corner the market on quick, awesome food in a neighborhood again!

Alright there G.R....hold your horses. I am no way affiliated with this restaurant, but I honestly believe the beef here is one of the best in the city. The other two great Chicago favorites that I love are the gyro and the classic Chicago style hot dog. You can never go wrong with any of these. A great recommendation for a casual Wednesday night, or a night after a trip out to Barleycorn, Halligan, or Lion's Head.

  • Tara H.

Loved the italian beef!!! Didn't like that they charge extra for peppers (Isn't that a staple for a beef?!) Fries were decent, not the best. The workers were super friendly. I can't wait to go back and check out more menu option! I love that it's BYOB! I would've never guessed that for a fast food place like this.

  • Kara H.

Overpriced and nothing to write home about. $12.50 for a fast food carry out salad I ordered a Greek Salad with chicken with a side of tzatziki. Was told tzatziki came with the gyro meat but would be $0.50 extra with the chicken option which was already extra and oddly the same price as the gyro meat. Ok I still wanted it just nickel and dime me we are already over $11 for a fast food salad at this point. Food: -Grilled chicken. Bland. No hint of a souvlaki flavor - Dressing tasted like watered down Italian. -Half a handful of feta cubes and various vegetables. All were good except cherry tomatoes -Warm Pita came on the side which was a nice touch and frankly unexpected because I didn't see an up charge on my receipt. What a treat. I walk by this place every day but sadly have no desire to return.

After a night of drinking we went to grab some hotdogs. The service was great, the food was great, what else can you ask for? Oh, did i mention you get a free cookie if you check in? Theres also big daddy challenge if youre feeling up for it. :)

  • Jerry C.

Johnny's has a lot going for it. It's open late on the weekends, offers a variety of what one would expect at a diner/grill, generally has good service, and has daily specials too. Some of my favorite options include the gyros sandwich : which they always provide a large portion of gyro meat with, and the Italian combo. If you're really hungry, the big daddy is a tower of greasy goodness that will fulfill most appetites. The price is pretty fair for the area, and their daily specials are usually a good deal (although I wish they still had 2$ hot dogs on Tuesdays). I also wish their fries were more salted, as I find them a little bland, but thats something I can remedy myself with some salt and pepper. I will continue coming to Johnny's for a quick meal for the foreseeable future. Solid food (albeit nothing life changing) at a solid price.

    (4)
  • Erik Y.

Yep, very good. Had the Chicago dog with hot peppers. Awesome! Also, if you order a combo, you can sub a pop for bottled water. A lot of places don't allow this but they do. Nice touch if you need to hydrate!

Walked in and had to try the Big Daddy. So glad I did. This was an amazing sandwich and I am now craving it as i type this review. Order it, you will NOT be disappointed!! If you like eating meat, then this is the sandwich for you!

Very kind and friendly service with a cozy burger joint vibe. This a good place for a decent bite. A step above McD's, etc. The lack of appropriate beverages (fountain drinks only) is a bit of a turn off. The quality of the prepared food is excellent but the ingredients are subpar... By that I mean they are very little more than a slightly glorified burger joint. The cheddar fries were not real cheddar but actually a sauce of unknown origins. The American cheese is a real turnoff on the big daddy. I'm sure the buns are high fructosinated, as well. Again, the preparation is very good. Tasty and all but nothing special.

My first trip to Chicago and I knew I had to try a Italian Beef sandwich. This place was close to my hotel and had great reviews. This place was amazing! I am so happy I got the italian beef from this place it was delicious! The staff is also incredibly friendly. I ordered the wrong thing and they took care of me when I caught my mistake! I highly recommend this place!

Solid late night hot dogs and even more solid service. Our cashier was awesome. Can't remember his name off the top of my head, but it was Saturday night (take note owner/manager). This dude had it down pat. Not only incredibly nice, but he had total control of the overall service and restaurant. All service employees should take note of this guy. Food is legit, affordable and FILLING!

We have ordered from Johnny's many times. The food is terrific. The online ordering tonight was very bad. In a word: Devonna. She handled our call better than anyone I have dealt with--ever. A really great place, with excellent food, that apparently hires really great people. Thank you again Devonna!

I didn't have a great experience here. The food was kind of expensive for the type of place it is. The quality and taste wasn't great either. I got the gyro, some fries and a drink. The gyro meat was kind of hard, didn't taste great. Definitely not a get what you pay for place. The fries were really good however. I don't think I will be back.

Great burger, fries, and drink combo for $7! Quality comparable to 5 Guys, although they don't give you such a ridiculously large serving of fries. Menu includes a selection of salads as well as typical sandwiches. Staff are friendly and accommodating. Dining area is clean and pleasant with background music that stays in the background.

Went for "the big daddy" and it's awesome. Fresh made. Gyros matches beef patty perfectly, they are both tender and juicy. It is a huge burger. Definitely go again!

What amazes me most about this place is the high quality of both the food and of the service of a location that could easily phone it in as a place that could just serve sh*tty drunk food to the DePaul/Lincoln Avenue crowd. Seriously, the service is always friendly (which says a lot considering the clientele) and the food is always delicious in addition to being cooked to order. Further, I had the pleasure this evening of meeting THE Johnny of "Johnny's Beef & Gyro's," and he truly couldn't have been nicer. He genuinely cared about the service provided and the quality of his product. Go. Eat. Enjoy.

I've been to Johnny's a few times now and have tried their burger, grilled chicken sandwich, steak & cheese, and gyro. Everything so far has been just okay, with the exception of the gyro was really good. Be warned, the gyro is also massive as it's served in an over-sized pita.

Great food and super friendly staff! I had a cheeseburger with bacon and egg and the BF had the Big Daddy, which is two patties with onion and gyro meat and your choice of taziki or BBQ sauce. Everything was delicious and the fries were super crispy, which is always a plus! Can't wait to go back and try some more menu items.

Ordered Hot Italian Beef sandwiches and Chicago Style Hot Dogs for delivery. The Chicago Dogs were good, but the hot Italian beef sandwiches were really not that great to be honest. I see this place is pretty highly rated, so maybe our experience would have been different if we would have gone in to eat instead of ordering it for delivery.

Was headed to a bar nearby and thought I'd try this place instead of getting overpriced bar food. Tried the $5 Monday special which came with a Chicago dog, fries and drink. Just what I needed! The staff was very friendly and the owner came out to make sure I was having a good experience. Nice personal touch. I've only been here once and can't vouch for how well-prepared all the items are, but it gets 5 stars for the friendly atmosphere and good deals. Plus I bet it would be a really fun place to eat when it's more crowded.

Yummy! Cooked to order burgers - delicious! Beef sandwich - excellent! BLT Pita - wonderful addition to the menu when you just aren't in the mood for a burger. In fact - they have a salmon sandwich and quite a few salad selections as well. Seeing a vast menu like this is refreshing and is sure to please any palette. Also - if your craving hits around 2 am on an early Sat morning - there will be someone to help you since they are open nice and late. Attentive, friendly staff. Quality food with quick service. Can't go wrong! Can't wait to see what I'll choose next...

Great spot any day of the week. I live in the neighborhood and routinely stop by for a quick sandwich for lunch or late night food. Hands down the best Italian beef I've ever had. It's just perfect. Grab one with some Parmesan truffle or Greek fries and you can't go wrong. Still haven't gone for the Big Daddy Challenge but may give it a shot at some point

Our Neighborhood Go-to Place. The Edzo's next door was closed once and we visited Johnny's with low expectations. We live in Old Town and our neighborhood is littered with poor-quality comfort food joints. Since visiting Johnny's that first time we don't even bother with Edzo's anymore and choose to patronize Johnny's for our occasional juicy meat fix. Service: With a noteworthy exception, the service at Johnny's is attentive, knowledgeable and fast. The two guys at the grill during today's visit ensured we were completely satisfied with our order. The young guy with a touch a facial hair and glasses not only followed up with us immediately after we were seated but also again sought us out as we were about to leave with expanded bellies. He practically lept from behind the kitchen and asked us if there was anything that wasn't perfect and also whether we wanted something to go (we did want more but had gorged enough already). This is the kind of self-motivated guy who will someday own his own successful restaurant chain or chains. He was fluent in polished english and spanish. Now to the exception. While the two topnotch guys in the kitchen were clearly tasked with food preparation and management of the cooking space, there was a woman obviously tasked with responsibility for the order placement and dining areas. She is unsuited to that position. This woman barely conversed with us during the order and was extremely dour as though she wanted to be any place except at work. She failed to ask us if we had a Johnny's card, good towards customer rewards, and instead of following up with us at any point post order simply sat in the rear of the dining space and plonked away texting on her cell phone. Worse, we were the only diners at the time and yet the tops of all the tables were dirty with crumbs and other remnants from previous diners. No crumbs on the floor, which suggests this one employee had not bothered to wipe the table tops the entire day. This inner city woman has no place in a customer-centric business and we look forward to meeting her replacement. Product: Truly excellent food for the type. It is clear that Johnny's avails itself of only superior ingredients. The meats are clearly sourced from high quality suppliers, seasoned just right, and cooked to juicy perfection. The vegetables and ingredients for the sides are fresh and not kept around until they wilt as at majority comparable other establishments in the neighborhood. The potatoes are free of blemishes and scorching, and they taste like snappily cooked potatoes. My stomach does not tolerate hydrogenated fats well and I can almost always tell after a meal whether the cooking oils contained a lot of hydrogenated fat. At Johnny's, I have never experienced that post meal bloating and queasiness encountered elsewhere. It is obvious that Johnny's replaces its cooking oil frequently, you can taste how the fries, which are thick-cut, are cooked in clean, fresh oil. Johnny's isn't the cheapest eats in the neighborhood but you get what you pay for here. Johnny's has become our neighborhood go-to place for satisfying comfort food and with good reason. When you visit, give the Big Daddy a try, it will quash that juicy angus craving fast and you will happily appreciate the substance of this review.
