Oh Joe, I can walk to you easily, push open your screen door and order a drink while inhaling an entire pack of cigarettes in one deep breath. I like the windows seats, they make for good people watching. The jukebox is very classic rocky, which is appropriate for this place. The bartender may look like your sweet gramma but she's not taking any of your crap so don't even try it. I love the list they have on the wall about how much they charge per lie if someone calls looking for you...one of the lies is to tell the caller you're over at Jewel.

This is the best bar to hang out in Lakeview. Lots of regulars and normal folks. Has gotten more crowded in recent years. I remember the days of being the only two people in the bar and chosing which channel to turn the TV but then again that was 9 years ago! Very cool place. Lots of history and good cold beer! Bartenders are very friendly. Love the tiny restrooms!

Best bar in Chicago. What you see is what you get, and what you get is pretty good. Drinks are cheap and the atmosphere is low key. It's a great place to relax and have a drink and the service is terrific. My go-to bar.

An interesting dive on the border of Wrigleyville and Boystown, Joe's on Broadway features $2.50 cans of Blatz beer, $3 PBR, and a likely certitude of other affordable libations. There is a broken video poker machine and some TVs to catch your favorite football game. The scene in Joe's on the Saturday night I went featured Cubs fans straggling from the day game and more middle-aged than anything else. The tables were old as hell but had super glossy varnish on them that was smooth and well applied. There is a giant plastic Marlin hanging over the back wall and a stockpile of old beer signs that would make any college kid jealous. Cool digs and probably the cheapest bar in walking distance!

Joe's. It used to be the smokiest bar in the city. I can't imagine being in this place without choking and walking out smelling like an ash tray was dumped on my head. It's going to be nice not hacking up a lung next time I venture into this island in the ocean of Boys' Town. This place is good to hit both before and after dinner next door at Angelina. I like the little bar at Angelina, so post-dinner is better in my eyes. It's also good to hit if you're a thirsty straight guy who is somehow lost in the area or after a Cubs game. This place has a great juke box. It's where I first discovered the Beatles Live at the BBC release. I had dismissed it upon its release because I generally hate live stuff and rehashes. When I heard it on the juke box here it amazed me and I ordered it on Amazon quickly thereafter. The crowd here is diverse and always nice and friendly. I'll end up here whenever I get back to Angelina.

It's a total dump, but I love it! I have a good friend in the area, and she and I have spent many a night drinking way too many vodka tonics and telling each other ALL. This is a great bar for those sorts of activities. I think we hatched a plan here, long ago one night, to move to Germany and open a hotel/cafe. Yeah. Watch this space for how that pans out.

Solid dive bar. Good prices, nice locals, and no Trixies and Chads--YAY!!! I'd go back. Funny story about this place....Came here with Aaron B. and Heidi B. to watch the Hawks/dead wings game 2. Saw the Hawks tie it up in the 3rd period, and with like 5 minutes left, the power went out. I guess it was an omen because the Hawks went on to lose in OT. So sad.....

Total dive. Love it. Order a $3 Blatz and ask Roger the bartender about his life.

We couldn't decide between spending the last of our cash on a cab ride home or putting the finishing touches on the shine we'd been working on for the past five hours. Joe helped us to decide. I remember we didn't get kicked out. I might have almost been hit in the head with a dart coming out of the bathroom...or was that at Jacqueline's?

This place is an absolute dive... but a complete breath of fresh air to the Lakeview/Wrigleyville scene. It is small, worn and gritty... yet is quaint, quiet and the prices are great. I believe I had a few of the 22oz Newcastles for like $6 or $7 a piece. There comes a time when it is nice to go to a bar with a couple of friends, have a few beers and hold a lengthy conversation about some ambiguous subject... Joe's on Broadway is the place for that. They will have a jukebox playing, but not so loud that you can't hear the person next to you. This is not the place to go hook up, dress to impress or run into some guy you knew from the days in the fraternity.... But it is a great place to calm down, enjoy a drink, enjoy a friend and enjoy an atmosphere.

A nice monday night, sipping a beer and listening to the jokes of the people around. I like the atmosphere of this place. Good thing I have it around the corner. Good place to go whe you have a quiet evening at home.

Joe's On Broadway is slowly becoming my go to place when I want to grab a cheap drink without having to travel to far. Joe's on Broadway is the epitome of a Dive Bar. I've had the opportunity to visit here a few times and I always seem to enjoy myself. When you first walk into Joe's on Broadway you'll first notice the various signs on the walls and the cheap drink prices. After living in NYC for a brief period of time I almost jumped out of my seat and purchased an unreasonable amount of drinks. Every time I've been here there always seems to be a few regulars that are having themselves a lively conversations. The bartenders are friendly enough but I wouldn't expect to have a lengthy or lively conversation with them. The two bartenders I've interacted with were super mellow and perfectly fit the vibe of the bar. The Joe's On Broadway on it's busiest night is no where near as packed as the least popular bar in Wrigleyville/Boystown. The biggest turn-off for me are the bathrooms. They still use the old hand dryers that are essentially just a loop of towel. I haven't seen one of these in years and with such a dive type bar it makes the whole thing a little bit grosser. Overall: Joe's On Broadway is a great place to visit for a quick drink if you have time to kill or you are on a budget.

One of my favorite dive bars. A convenient location in a nice, quiet neighborhood, Joe's is far enough away from Wrigley Field that it doesn't get packed with loud, drunk baseball fans. For a cheap option, Joe's offers Hamm's for $3, but they have a good selection of craft beers as well.

    (5)
  • Mindi A.

We stopped at Joe's on a whim because the game ended earlier than expected and we had about 1.5 hours to kill before dinner. This turned out to be one of the more fun places we could have chosen! The crowd here loved that a bachelorette party came in and had a "bridal to do list" to accomplish. The bartender played along and we had a blast, starting a Grease sing-along that turned into an oldies dance party! Additionally, their beer selection and prices were quite good. I would come back to this little bar again even without the bachelorette party :)

So glad I found this place in my new neighborhood. Classic dive, which are the types I love to frequent. $3 pint of Hamms... Mmmmm... Delicious. Peanuts, Slim Jims, smokes, & vodka pints. Yes, this place is amazing

Screen Door! *clang* Honestly, how many bars or places have a screen door? That deserves 3 stars right there. In spite of being close, I only go sometimes. But I like the cozy eclectic atmosphere. Roger, the bartender who vaguely resembles Clay from The Sons of Anarchy, is nice and a huge film expert. This isn't the place for foo foo drinks. There's a very diverse crowd of regulars, people who wander in after a game, people killing time (all ages and it's very random). They let you bring in food if you want and there's a jukebox. The last visit a different bartender gave both me and my partner drastically wrong drinks. We just laughed after he walked away and drank. I like it for it's kitsch and hopefully to talk to that guy about movies again. Play some stuff on the juke. (by the way the listing for nearest L stop and the neighborhood are WRONG and have been forever. The nearest L stop is Addison RED and it's in LAKEVIEW. Screen Door! *clang!*)

  • John M.

Basically the only real bar in these parts. Cheap booze and Slim Jims. Roger has seen every movie made. Michael likes Tom Waits. Jack has a moustache. Douchebags happily and immediately ejected. I dunno know what more you think you need.

Had a beautiful time with sandy, the bartender. Then a local regular, Joey, came in and was nice at first and then really offensive, to the point that I did not feel welcome and left. I don't know what his issue was with me, but I left feeling quite upset that he had ruined my great time at the place.

"Happened" upon this place walking down Broadway and felt a pull to check it out. Glad we did. Cheap drinks ($3 Hamms draft pints), and a friendly atmosphere. Could only stay for a short time, but will be back soon.

I was finishing up a baseball road trip. All three home teams (white Sox, Brewers and Cubs) won. Came here after the bleachers in Wrigley to kill some time before a flight late on a Tuesday night. I left with about twelve movie recommendations and a very honest smile. Roger is one of the best bartenders I've ever had. It was a quiet night but I felt like I was hanging out with a good friend. Booze selection was good enough. Beers were fine. Service was impeccable. If you're in the market for a good discussion about anything, I highly recommend this place. First time I've ever given enough of a damn to review somewhere on yelp.

I was in this bar for about 5 minutes, and had the worst treatment ever by the bartender. Me and 2 friends decided to stop by on a slow night. I went in first, and they stayed outside to have a smoke. I tried to order a round, and he would only give me one, since he wanted to see their IDs. I get that, but lets be real, its not like this is some awesome bar that 18 year olds are trying to sneak into. So I go out to explain the situation, and one of my friends gives me his ID to show (the other said he was probably going to leave anyway). Mind you, its about 15 feet from the bar to the outside, so he clearly saw me do this. I come back in and show him the ID, and he says he can't accept it without the guy being there. Again, kind of a dick move, but I can accept it. At that point he decides, out of nowhere, that he doesn't want me there. His exact words were "I'm not going to serve you because you can't follow directions". Reading some of the reviews, maybe thats their "thing". If you aren't a regular, they don't want you there. I get the appeal of a dive bar, but if you are going to be rude to new patrons, thats a problem.

What's not to like? Large selection of beer for a small place, great service and offensively charming bartenders. Come on in!

Hidden gem of a bar. Great staff, great drinks....best bar in the area by far!

    (5)
  • Doug M.

You need to grab a beer. They got beer. Something harder? They got that too. No flair, just a good old fashioned conversational bar. Seems like a place where an entire bar could get in on one.

    (3)
  • Eric O.

Love this place. Cheap beer on tap, good beer on tap what more can you ask for. A solid jukebox, bartenders who aren't dicks, and don't ask questions. Mind the door on your way out.

    (4)
  • Lenny P.

This rating is based on it being a dive bar. Love all the bartenders, especially Roger. They have Blatz on draft for cheap, served in a frosty cold mug. For being such a small place I never have trouble grabbing a spot at the bar. They also have a carry out license. Their sign reads "Sorry, We're Open". Classic dive.

    (5)
  • Damian C.

Second time around, not so much. -They were out of Blatz. Boo. Cheap beer FAIL. -The music selection was even worse than the horrid tunes we played. -They don't take AMEX! OK, SOME places don't, but I really like the points on my AMEX better than my Visa. -The bartender had the "if you don't like it, there are 2000 other bars in Chicago" attitude. :(

  • Jelena Z.

If Charles Bukowski were still alive and kicking and visiting Chicago, you'd find him right here. The beer is cold and cheap, the jukebox is stacked (to hear the Pogues' "Turkish Song of the Damned" was nostalgic) and the bartenders can pour a stiff one. There's no food, but if I may make a recommendation, order a pizza from Panino's up the street. Only blocks away so you'll be sure to receive a fresh, hot pie. And then feed the leftovers to some of your co-patrons. See, making new friends is easy! This is a working class bar... a joint that focuses on drinking. Not decor, not polish, and it's certainly not the place for the trite trixie set. 'Cept for when the Cubs fans take over. But October-March, it's all mine baby... all mine! Watch out for the heavy-handed shots! Let's just say one shot of Grey Goose became three with what was left over in the shaker. And I don't even do shots. "It was all in the moment" (that's all she wrote). Good friends, good times... good memories.

  • Aaron B.

Places like this don't exist in Wrigleyville/Lakeview, they don't, believe me... I would give it only four stars because at its core it is just your run of the mill great dive bar. However, this place has a freaking screen door! Name one place on Clark or Sheffield that has a SCREEN DOOR@!#$ I love it. They have PBR's everyday for 3 bones (not a great deal I know) and have a few beers on tap so it isn't all just cans and bottles, a pick up dart league on Mondays, two, count em, TWO huge flat screen tv's, which are great for watching the Wings beat the Hawks. At least until the power to the whole block goes out and you have to run home to catch the end of it! I am glad I live so close. They are within walking delivery distance of Paninos - mmmmm and usually have several unique characters at the bar, whether it be @ noon or midnight! I like it - nuf said

DIVE BAR. If you don't like DIVE BARS then stop reading this and don't go... This is an epic place to get a 3 dollar beer and BS with the bartender... Great alternative to some of the "fancy" bars in the area. They have a sign on the ceiling that says "SORRY WE ARE OPEN"... priceless! They have BLATZ on tap which is awesome!

Joe's is the shining light in Wrigleyville for me. As I've grown older, I have a new found appreciation for a watering hole where fat old men are bartenders and the clientele ranges from regulars from the 1970's up till the drunks around the neighborhood who want to feel "real." It's no frills, and low maintenance in other words, don't come here looking for a killer Manhattan or Tom Collins. Why would you go into a place called Joe's on Broadways expecting anything more than a cold beer? I think the owners and employees are aware of this and can give two craps about what you think about whether you have to classify this under a dive bar or not...they've been around way longer than this judgmental category so you can go suck it!!!

What a great neighborhood bar should be. Makes me want to move to this hood just to call it my own. Laid back and friendly bartender that will chat you up or leave you alone. Strong pours. Great prices. The actual shape of the bar at this place gives it a great, cozy feel. Love all of the knick knacks, old photos and the fact that they've got PBR and most of the Stoli flavors. You don't have to sacrifice your favorite cocktail for the old school charm. They've got a hilarious wood carved sign that lists the different costs for a bartender to lie about where you are should someone (maybe your wife in 1965) be calling around to find you. Priceless. Can't wait to meander over here after a Cub's game one day soon. I'm keeping my finger crossed that it is undiscovered by the bleacher mob (no offense).

This is just a classic *old man bar*, with a sports theme. A good place to go by yourself if you don't want to meet anyone or be bothered, but want to watch whatever game is playing. They give preference to baseball; whatever games are in vivo will be shown. That said, provided there aren't usually enough baseball games going on at any given moment to monopolize their screens, they do show other sports on a more obscurely located side monitor. There is an actual Joe; he tends bar sometimes, and will unapologetically kick you out/not serve you if your ID is expired *cough*. PBR longnecks are always $2.50. You can pay by card; there is no minimum to use plastic. Refreshing. Overall, the vibe is slow; the place never crowded. Don't expect to hear any music. And for God's sake, just come here to unwind after work, or on a Sunday - don't waste a Friday or Saturday night. They do not serve food. Ladies: You really need not be concerned with what you look like going into this bar, unless you are into mid 40s to 55(ish) year olds.

    (3)
  • Terris A.

Its a dive bar, so don't except much more. Went on a Friday night and was introduced to the "regulars" at this place. I found it to be charming in its own way. Drinks are cheap and the staff are friendly. If I drank beer maybe it would be even more alluring. Oh well, I will probably stop by there again for a drink.

    (3)
  • Jess B.

It is what it is. It's a dive bar with small tv's where a bunch of old men hang out. You have to knock as you leave the bathroom so you don't get hit with a dart. Beer is cheap for this neighborhood and it's the opposite of the Clark St. chode-fest. When I lived over here it was definitely my favorite place for a cold, cheap, domestic beer.

I have high expectations of dive bars. They must possess the perfect magical mixture of ingredients to get it just right. If just one little thing is off, the bar doesn't make the grade. I was fortunate to visit a truly great dive bar during my recent travels to Chicago. I was staying in Wrigleyville and looking for a place to get a cold beer and watch the Cubs/Sox game. I wanted to experience a real Chicago dive with all the accoutrements ... eclectic regulars, great history and a smart-talkin bartender. And I found it. Upon entering Joe's on Broadway, I was greeted with a large sign reading, "Sorry, we're open." A good start. I went to take a seat at the bar and was looked at skeptically by the motley crew of regulars. Another good sign. Tourists are a rarity at Joe's. I sat down, ready to order a Goose Island 312 (a local beer brewed in Lincoln Park) that I had heard so much about. But as I faced the bar, my stool slowly spun around and I was suddenly facing the door again. I then realized that the floor at Joe's is on a slant -- and keeping my bar stool facing the right way was going to be an ongoing challenge. After maneuvering my stool to once again be facing the bar, I took a look around. The bar boasted a bevy of smart-ass signs: * If only closed minds came with closed mouths. * Our house wine is Jagermeister. * Kangaroos next 14 miles. * I (heart) Rainy Lake International Falls, MN. * If life gives you lemons, grab the vodka. * Be good or be gone. The lovely barkeep on duty, Roger, came over to take my order. I requested the 312 on tap and wasn't disappointed. It was ice-cold. 312 is an American pale-wheat ale, yummy and very refreshing. Roger is a low-key, sweet teddy bear. We had a good conversation about the area and the bar's history. Joe's has been a Chicago institution for 40+ years. He told me that before it was Joe's, the place had been two other bars. Basically, this joint has been slinging drinks for Chicagoans for the past 100 years. Wow. Besides the smart-ass signs, the decor features a jukebox with classic rock, a dart board, and a mounted sailfish on the wall. There's also a large hand-made sign in homage to the Cubs' 1989 Eastern Division Championship. And a misspelled specials board, "Rumpelmize ... $3.50." About that time, a college kid wandered in, obviously very out of his frat-house element. Roger asked him what he'd like. The guy then asked one of the stupidest questions I've ever heard at a bar: "Uh ... yeah. Do you have Bud Light?" Roger responded, dead-pan: "Yeah, son. We also have Miller Lite and Coors Light. And Amstel Light if yer feelin fancy." About that time, the baseball game got very exciting. I found myself cheering as loudly as the locals (even though I'm not a Cubs fan). At the end of the game, I was high-fiving the other patrons and had a feeling that I had overcome their suspicion. I went to Joe's the next night, and what a difference a day makes. Upon my entrance. I was greeted enthusiastically by the same regulars. Roger had a huge smile, called me by name and pointed to an empty bar stool. I was home. I have to say that Roger is one of the coolest dudes I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. He's not only an attentive server; he's also extremely intelligent and carried on great conversations about a myriad of subjects. And he drinks tequila shots. Be sure to buy him one if you visit. I've drank in dive bars all over this great country, and Joe's is one of the best. I'm painfully sad that this gem isn't in my neighborhood. I hope the regulars at Joe's appreciate their good fortune. -Vodka Toxic bartrash.wordpress.com

What Brandon W. said. Jerk at the bar thought he had a right to demand an id from me though the law says you can order a drink at 21 or older and, let's face it, my gray hair reveals to people that I'm a bit over 21. We only went here because my father used to frequent the place in the early 1970's. Unfortunately, since the 70s, the place has fallen into bad hands. There are simply too many bars on Broadway, or for that matter, in the city of Chicago, for anyone to go to this awful place -- even if his father managed to wander in 40 years earlier.

    (1)
  • Craig B.

This place is totally awesome. Here's a perfect example of how awesome it is. Some stupid and already drunk recent college grads stumbled in and asked for a margarita and Roger kicked them out. He told them to leave! We were on our way out when this happened and the kids were completely shocked and confused. It was really satisfying.

I love this dive. Cheap drinks. great jukebox. slammy screen-door. Roger will even watch TV with you.

I really love this place. It's a good, straight forward, a little rough around the edges basic Chicago bar. I never feel unsafe, awkward or out of place there. I've had some of the best nights of my time living in this city end with a beer at Joe's, and I look forward to many more. Don't ever change.

I came her with a friend after seeing her show, we were looking for a place to have a few drinks, some conversation, catch up and have a good time. We walked around and found Joe's.... Is it fancy? No. Is it pristine? No. Is it fairly inexpensive, friendly staff and interesting people watching? Yes. Will I be back? Sure.

    (4)
  • Katie H.

How could you not love Joe's? It's got a screen door, which is a sure sign of a quality dive. Staff is likeably surly - they'll gladly chat with you but they won't take crap from anyone. Drinks are cheap, the music isn't too loud, and now that the smoking ban is in effect, I can actually breathe inside!

    (4)
  • Sarah F.

D-I-V-E! Everyone knows that! What's so great is that the crowd that hangs in there is super chilled out, the staff is friendly (and always it's the same few bartenders), the juke box is old-school, and the GIANT Newcastle beers they serve are MUCHO FRIO! Yes, they serve these gigantic, super-cold bottles of Newcastle beer for like $6 or something. They must be like, double-bottles or something. So very refreshing on a hot Summer day. All of the above is why I go to Joe's (that and the fact that I live around the corner!).

  • Eric R.

I'm sorry to be the party pooper, but it's time to be the Kindergarten Cop when it comes to Joe's. Listen, I love a good dive more than anyone. My favorite bars include Home of Champions, the Sovereign, and Christina's. But there's something about Joe's I just can't shake. See, it was my first "round the corner" place when I first moved to the city. I think I may have spent too much time there breaking in barstools. Ever see "Trees Lounge" with Steve Buscemi? That's what Joe's is. A bar for folks to die in. I feel weird when I walk past it these days. Kind of a reminder of some weird times in my life.

    (2)
  • Petronella D.

This is my local and I love it. It's like the bartenders and the regulars have a sixth sense about patrons. I've never had a bad experience, but I've seen groups of folks who would probably be happier in a trendy club walk in, turn around, and come right back out, complaining about the dirty looks they just got. The only reason I gave it four stars instead of five is that it gets unbearably smoky in there. I know, it's part of what makes a dive bar a dive bar, but that doesn't mean I have to like it.

Pros: $3.00 Hamms cans Pitchers of Blatz Friendly bartenders Cons: Can't directly control the heat or a/c = nights w/ 83 indoor temps = not fun The 3s on the juke box don't work (but the friendly bartender advised me of this before I wasted any $)
