I don't know what I was expecting but I was a little disappointed. My dude and I bought a house a block away and had been meaning to check out our closest watering hole for a long time but, you know, we've got some kids and stuff and they don't go well with bars. So we finally had a night alone and went in to check it out. The bartender was a big meh. She spent the night chatting up some guy and left us hanging often. She was not at all friendly to us. No big deal, she's just there to serve up the drinks. I think the most disappointing thing for us was the dart set up. We throw in a dart league and when we heard this place had darts we were excited. But the dart set up is terrible, in order to play we would have had to hover over a couple having drinks at a table. That wasn't happening. So we had to skip that. There was a guy on guitar and while I don't normally like live music in bars (I feel it's usually too loud and I don't go to bars to shout over my friends), this guy wasn't too bad and he wasn't screaming so I could still sit and chat with my dude. Like I said, it's the closest bar to us so we'll probably be back eventually, I'm not scrambling to find a sitter to come so we can go.

Well nice fireplace, but lets make sure you don't leave ur beer half way or 3/4 full and go out for a smoke at a table due to they will clean the table and give you an attitude when u tell them someone cleared your beer.... n when the bartender tells u "dont leave your beer anymore" I understand clean the table of the empty bottles but not the ones almost full....

Really lovely little neighborhood place. Warm and cozy fireplace in the winter, nice side street patio in the summer with pretty flowers. They make an effort to have good seasonal beers on tap. They have pared down their menu, which allows them to make everything better. Good burgers and delicious fish and chips.

Galvin's is a nice neighborhood Irish pub with good food and good beer. Galvin's was the first place where the REAL Irish bartender poured me a Guinness and crafted a shamrock in the foam. I rewarded him with a nice tip. We've never been there for music and usually go for an early dinner and a couple of pints. They pour a good Guinness in a town where so many bartenders don't know what the heck they're doing. I wish we still lived near Galvin's...

Food is really good. Service absolutely sucks. Unless you are a regular, plan to be there a while. We go occasionally - fish n chips is excellent, all you can eat fish on Friday - but their wait staff is too busy chatting with the barflys and regulars to actually offer good service. Go - just not if you are on the clock !!

A black and tan is Guinness and Blue Moon!!! never again, will I go. waitress was horrible and tried to inflate our bill with more drinks than we ordered. then when we confronted her, she attempted to not correct the issue anyway.

  • B K.

The food and drinks are good, but if you sit at a table, the service is always terrible. If you order soup or water, good luck getting it in under 20 minutes. The only way I will go back is to have a drink at the bar. The service has cost Galvins a lot of business from the neighborhood. My neighbors don't go there because of the bad service.

I love this place! Great food, reasonably priced drinks, and outdoor seating! They always have beer and food specials too!

Not impressed. Very slow service and the food was just okay. The staff were like zombies and nobody seemed very enthused to be working there. The meatloaf was pretty good though.

Normally, I don't care for bars/ pubs. That being said, I really enjoyed the lunch we had at Galvin's a few weeks back. Kudos to the bartender / waitress who seemed to be a one woman dynamo, while remaining cordial and efficient. I had the bangers and mash. It was really very good. I brought home some for mom and she loved it as well. Christopher took advantage of their $2 Tuesday burger. It wasn't any little dinky slider. It really was a good deal all around. We will be back for sure. I just need to remember t bring a flashlight to read the menu. It is kind of dark in there and these old eyes of mine.....

What a pleasant surprise! Found this place through Yelp, and right in my own neighborhood. Cute outdoor patio. Great food!! Started with the Jameson wings-WOW! Crispy, juicy, and flavorful. I had the Ruben Sandwich. Cornbeef was tasty and fresh. My partner had the Philly Steak. Also delish! And best part was the fries! Thin, crispy and tasty! I will become a regular here!

SLOW! I went on Sunday afternoon (12/9) with some friends. It was after the Bears game, and the place was less than half full. There was one guy working the bar, and one girl working the floor. We all had drinks and appetizers, but it took forever to get anything to come to the table. We arrived at 4:30 and didn't get out until 6pm. It shouldn't take 90 minutes for beers and wings.

I have been going there for years. Always a good laugh with the ever-present regulars at the bar.. I love the bartender Maggie-so sweet and fast! Love their curry sauce-I put thats.. on everything :) Try their fish and chips ( I sub for mash potatoes) and bloody marys. Always a good time!

Stopped in Tue. 12/30/14 for a $2 burger around 6pm. It was disappointing to say the least... pre-formed frozen patty and not the usual pub burger they serve. At least the Guinness was cold. Never again!

Every man (and his wife) needs a bar like Galvin's. This place has good food, especially if you have a hankering for Irish fare, good daily specials and always a friendly face behind the bar.

  • Laurie D.

So sad to say this authentic pub so reminiscent of the European original really disappointed me . Service ABYSMALLY SLOW ....and we were only ones dining. Two old guys at the bar......and the two servers behind the bar couldn't burn the calorie and be bothered with giving us ketchup and napkins. Used to be a cool and quaint place to grab a Weiss beer and some authentic comfort food, but so not worth it.

Okay. Love, love, love Galvin's! Just wish it was all the way up in Jeff Park so we could get there easier. Let's start with transpo...the Lawrence bus goes right by there but you have to catch it at the Jeff Park Blue Line station because if your try from Kedzie on the Brown, you will need to change over to the Lawrence west bus from the Lawrence east. Trust me, slow as hell so just catch a cab. They have parking but it is a very small lot, so unless you are planning to come for lunch or you get here very early (6-ish) evening, you will have to settle for finding street parking. Logistics handled, let's talk atmosphere. Singles, families, little children about, this is the community spirit of the Irish pub. Throw in live music on weekends and sometimes other time as well, and you have a winning combination already without getting to the food. I have been to this place on St. Paddy's and after a live Celtic FC versus Flyers exhibition match and it rocks! And, the food! Wow! Something changed in the last few years because when were started going there 5 years ago, the food was ehhh. Not sucky but not good, just bland. But not anymore. For bar food picking, they have good Onion Straws, Cheese Curds and Bacon Wrapped Shrimp. For a bigger meal, they have excellent Fish and Chips, which I usually order. Hubby likes their Irish Breakfast and their Bangers and Mash. Good stuff.

Nice neighborhood bar and grill. The waitresses have all been excellent, and the food is pretty solid. We also noticed less options on the menu, but what we normally have is still on the menu. Beer selection is good, and you can relax here in a comfortable environment. Near Lawrence and Austin in Jefferson Park.

I have not yet tried anything on the menu but the Guinness is delicious! My wife and I stopped in for some black and tan's and they had a live band playing. The band was really two guys singing some classic rock tunes... they were not so good but they did provide background noise for the place. It would have been much better if they had an Irish folk band or something a bit more interesting. I will say that the two gentlemen really got into the songs... and they seemed to be into each other as well. The staff was friendly and the crowd was varied... older folks as well as college students. This place is not far from my house so I have gone back a few times.

BLAAAAAHHHH! As Irish pubs go, this is pretty common. I've eaten here on a couple of occasions, and have not been impressed. It is a local joint that gets very packed, and it's difficult to find standing room sometimes. The good thing about this place, besides being close to my house, is that they have live bands on the weekends. Usually Irish bands, but they have other stuff sometimes too. The parking lot is small, for the number of people that are jammed in there on the weekends, but there is street parking available near by. I'd go again, but only if I was going to see a specific band.

Where do I start? Well, Galvin's is an awesome little Irish Pub that's very authentic. The decor is welcoming and cozy and there's even a small outside patio in case you want to get away from it all. The music can range from rock to pop and I've even been there when they've had a live band. The bartenders are chatty and they've always been cool and super fast. Oh, and the Guinness girls ;) have been known to drop in every once in a while... what's better than free pints of Guinness and the Guinness Girls? I've only been there to drink, but the last time I was in the food look delicious and if it wasn't so late I would have ordered some. For a true Irish experience in Chicago, I definitely recommend Galvin's!

low key, high energy pub... this is a semi-local irish pub in the jefferson park area serving all the usual irish pub fare. i need to commend their vegi burger! when ordering vegi burgers, i normally ask the server if they are boca or gardenburger -- a) hate boca b) can't get myself to spend 7 bucks on boca/gardenburger when i can walk down the street and buy 2 BOXES of the stuff from jewel. our server assured me that it was neither but that it was not made on the premises, either. i gave it a shot and it was pretty good - MUCH better than boca. it was the perfect spot to catch up with friends and when our server overheard it was my friend's bday, insisted that she take a bday shot on the house! our server was very attentive and super-friendly.

Large Irish pub. They often have live sessions on the weekends. When I was in high school and hung out there it was called something else, still Irish, but the name escapes me.

Local, laid back and what you would expect from the lads and lassies in jeff park. Bringing kids here is encouraged by the wonderful woman who owns the place, and in the spring you can enjoy the outside beer garden. We even bring our dog - outside of course. It's just "that" kind of place. Wednesdays pub quiz is fun and Sean the bartender takes care of his people well. Props to Sean and Nick- they can tend a bar like David Blaine can work a crowd ... Magic ! I really like this place.

Soooo, I stopped in here for an Irish Breakfast on Sunday and it was disappointing. The place is nice enough on the inside - pretty typical Irish bar feel, but it was very very dark for 11am. Ideal for day-drinking, perhaps? Anyhow - the service was pleasant and my company kept me entertained, but the food was barely 'ok'. The food came out ridiculously slow, which was crazy because there was a grand total of 6 other customers in the whole place. Our toast came to the table easily 10 minutes before our meals came. Theres nothing like putting an egg on a cold piece of toast - yuk. The most painful part of the experience was that my favorite part of Irish Breakfast (the sausage) was desperately overcooked and had burst out of the casing. It was a big let-down. Dry, crumbly, no real flavor. Not like nice Irish breakfast sausage at all. :( My egg was cooked just right, but the rest of the meal was just 'meh'. Definitely not worth the calories or the wait.

Saturday night June 10, I went with friends to Galvin's to hear a great bluegrass trio called Sunnyside Up, scheduled to play at 10 PM. They had played there before, been booked again for this date by the owners even though it was the night of a Blackhawks game, but we were excited to hear this group. The game ran quit a bit overtime, so we all just enjoyed the event and hung out 'til the game was over (Blackhawks won! Yay!) at about 11 PM. Then Colby Maddox and his band Sunnyside Up finally went up on stage and played two great numbers, after which the owner came out and asked them to cease playing, (Was everyone there only interested in the TV after-game coverage? Did nobody else wish to hear live music? or what?) We had been there from 9:30 PM - had come from quite a distance, specifically to hear this band, waited an hour and a half - not to mention the band being booked for 10, bringing in and setting up all their sound equipment, instruments etc., much earlier, not being allowed to play until 11 PM, because of the game, and then being stopped almost immediately! We were furious. No explanation. Not even a kind apology. Simply a rude brush-off to us who had waited so patiently just to hear this great music, and a rude, unethical, and unprofessional brush-off to the band, not even wanting to pay them their full pay after such an error in their own planning. An appalling lack of courtesy and professionalism to their customers and to the band they had booked. Judith

I would have given this place 5 stars last summer, because I loved that I could get a good Guinness and pierogies at the same place. They have since removed pierogies from the menu, and I'm saddened. I've tried most of the Irish fare on the menu, and it's all decent. Nothing is overwhelmingly fantastic, but it's a great place in this Polish neighborhood to get a shepherd's pie and a fresh Guinness or Smithwick's.

On a recent visit here, we discovered that things had changed. The portions were smaller and the prices were not. It was still reasonable, the fish & chips were tasty, but it's not the value that had given it 5 stars in my earlier review..

The Yelp listing for this place should just read bars, restaurants, not rooming house! They will let you lodge here only while having a cold one or having dinner, but then it's time ot hit the road. This place has a full dinner menu and a small beer garden. I recommend a pint of Guiness or Harp with your meal.

Why is everyone complaining about the prices and portion? Ummm, Hello! Almost all of the businesses are cutting back and/or increasing their prices. They are hurting just as much as everyone else!

I think that I found my second favorite Sunday afternoon activity; hanging out at the bar by the fire, drinking some Stella, and eating some very good Irish fare. This is how I spent my afternoon after an event at Delightful Pastries down the street. After finishing up my activity at Delightful Pastries, I met my bf at Galvin's where he sat relaxing by the fire, reading a book, and drinking a Stella. Upon meeting him, I sat down and joined in the relaxing. I grabbed a Stella as well and admired the interior. The bar is very homey and warm. The bronzed, detailed tin ceiling was decorated with sparkly shamrocks for St. Patrick's Day. The walls are lined with all sorts of Irish decorations. It's definitely an Irish pub not trying to be any other than itself. For that reason alone, I liked it here. The food pleasantly surprised me by being really good pub food. I had the fish and chips and they were great. The fish was crispy and tender. So good. The chips are real potato chips there, crunchy on the outside and tender in the middle. What impressed me the most was the homemade coleslaw. The coleslaw is spicy and peppery with red onions and caraway seeds. The caraway seeds make the coleslaw so unique and delicious. If given the chance, try the coleslaw, it's worth it. Galvin's Public House is a great Irish corner pub. Through my visit there, I could definitely spend another afternoon relaxing by the fire, drinking some beer, and being with my man; thus a perfect Sunday afternoon.

Yeah, their fish and chips were great! Batter just nice, not at all greasy, mild cod, big portions and delish chips. Good drink specials and cozy atmosphere. We got a table in front of the blazing stone fireplace. Not a lot of tables, though, so make a reservation if you a weekend if you can. I would give this a 5-star cuz we were very pleased, but I reserve that for someplace really unique and innovative.

This place is pretty much perfect for me. Their food is great, and as people have mentioned, you have to try the Irish Nachos. I've enjoyed everything that I've eaten there which includes some of their sandwiches, curry chicken, and different appetizers. The wait staff is very friendly and always willing to chat with you if you've got something to say. The only two knocks that I have on this place is their TV situation and the live music. I'd like to see a few better televisions in there so watching games is easier. The only nice television is in a corner and some of the things on the wall get in the way of seeing that tv if in the wrong spot. As far as the live music, I don't mind the bands that play there but as others have mentioned, its just too small and is very loud. It ends up being an ok atmosphere since people are jammin but you really can't hear anything once the band starts playing other than the loud music. We've brought a few people with to this place and everyone else has enjoyed their time so hopefully you will give it a try too!

Pub close to my home. Good meals, plenty of space. Best to get a drink or 2 and sit by the fire enjoying one of their great specials. Friendly. They also have a patio space, can't wait for the weather to improve!

Delicious fish sandwich and chips. Chips are amazing! We went there on their Tuesday "Half off Burger Days". I'm a vegetarian and I wish they had one that was half priced or at least allow us vegetarians to get the fish for half priced too. :-)

I went here to watch my friend's cover band play. This place is not ideal for holding music events. It's not laid out properly to really hear a live band, and the makeshift stage is like forcing the band to play inside a phone booth. Since you can't hold a conversation and you can't hear the band, the only option you have is to watch whatever movie is muted on the various televisions and pretend you can follow the plot. To be fair, you can tell that they try to make it a good place to see a free show, but they can't quite fit the live music aspect in. It's like a forty year old man going to a wedding in the tuxedo from his high school prom. As far as the pub itself, it was very nice. To be honest, I expected a sort of dive atmosphere due to the neighborhood it was in. It's very clean and comfortable, and it resembles a traditional pub you'd see in Ireland. Even the staff is Irish. I didn't have any food, but my friends said it was fantastic. The beer selection was decent, and I can assume that they know how to pour a proper Guinness. I only ordered two beers the night I was there and both times the bartender misheard me and poured me a beer I didn't order. Of course, he was cool about correcting his mistake. Since I live in the outskirts of the city where the only places to get a drink are dank and dingy VD factories with glass block windows that proudly advertise having "Old Style on tap", it's kind of nice to know a place like this is in close proximity. I definitely wouldn't mind going back to hang out and have a few pints. But if there's a live band that night, I'm afraid I'll have to pass.

I give this place five stars because the food is AWESOME and the drinks are cheap AND I can go with my dog in the summer. I don't think I need to elaborate, but I'll do you the favor and explain. The have great daily specials, everything that I've tried is exceeding my expectation. Although they are a bar, their food goes could really carry this place on its own. I highly recommend the Irish nachos (Homemade potato chips with bacon, scallions, cheese, and sour cream) as well as their wings (if you like sweet go for the Irish ones, if not, the classes hot wings are good). And, although my husband might kill me for letting out our secret, I'm doing it anyway. They have this INSANE gravy that they serve with some of their dishes. My husband liked it so much he tried it with fries. Let's just say we've been hooked ever since. It's not on the menu, but the staff is ultra friendly so I'm sure they'll oblige. You can thank me later.

Thank you to all of you who recommended this restaurant. We had a lovely evening. Good food, good prices, great beer. Kathy, our waitress, was working alone and she did a great job! We had an Irishman in our party and he had Shepard's pie and said it was very good. My husband had fish and chips and the rest of us had corned beef..delicious. The only thing I would say against this pub is their desserts are just ok. Chocolate cake...don't bother. Apple crisp...just ok. Brownie sundae...very good. We will surely be back.

The waiter we fell in love with just left this place. The reason we come back is because he suggested what we had and we loved every bite. Fish and CHips are amazing, so are the burgers. French onion soup always spot on. Good amount of tables, and a few booths/benches around a would be dance floor/mingle area.

I went to Galvin's a few weekends ago for a birthday party. Even though I was mostly in the back room where the party was (rockin' the karaoke mike with Sonic Lizard Karaoke!), I did get to pass through the main room to get to the back room, as well as pass through to get to the restroom. It is a pretty laid back, friendly place. There were several groups of locals in their late twenties and early thirties. My friend and I walked in all glammed out (as we regularly do when going to a karaoke party) so I was a little nervous people would be like, "Who the heck are these divas?" Nope. Everyone was accepting and cool. I would like to revisit this place for a pint and get to know the vibe in the main room.

One thing about this place is that they know how to fill a glass of wine. A nearly 3/4 full glass of wine is something to be noted and praised. The food I'm not so sure about. I ordered fresh made chips. I got them back in less than five minutes. They were delicious but they were also room temperature? Why weren't they hot?? The Gordon Ramsay in me became suspicious. No way were these made a few minutes before. I didn't make a stink. Too tired and too late. I will be back for the drinks.

I really wanted to like this place. Neighborhood pubs are my favorite and the outside looked so cute. The service was average - nothing notably bad or good. The food was well below average. The Irish Nachos were lacking cheese and weren't cooked all the way. Instead of scallions, there were cut up yellow onions and we weren't told ahead of time. The shepard's pie was fresh. You could tell it had been microwaved. The inside was steaming hot but outside was cold. We were watching the Hawks game and the screens froze in the middle of the third period right after the opposing team scored. Nobody on the staff seemed concerned or bothered to fix it. Disappointing!

  • Michael L.

This has recently become my go to pub/bar even though it's not right in my neighborhood. What I'm saying is that it's well worth the trip to get over there. Food is consistently good from: shepard's pie to fish & chips, even the chicken quesadilla is solid. Which is somewhat surprisning for an Irish bar. Other positives include the parking in their lot just to the west of where you enter the bar, the nice fireplace, free popcorn, and super friendly and attentive bartenders and staff every time I've been in here. The crowd is a healthy mix of local barflies as well as business lunchers or after work cocktail seekers that pass through depending on the time of day you visit. I've never really seen the place crowded which is a plus in my book as well. If you find yourself on the NW Side, it's definitely worth stopping in.

Chip Laszlo here. We were looking for a place to go to for St. Pattys and based on the reviews we decided on Galvin's. The guinness was $5 for a pint and tasted great. The look of the place was great. Fireplace and live music added for a great atmosphere. The place was busy and I mean packed! We figured as much being a Irish pub on St. Pat's. The only problem I had with the place was the food. I was surprised because so many people spoke highly of it. Maybe they were rushing because of how bust they were and the quality suffered. I had the fish and chips. I never knew fish could be chewy, they must of left it in the frier to long because the cod was very dark in color and tasted like oil. The chips though were excellent! My fiance had the corn beef and cabbage, The corn beef was tough, very tough. Our jaws got tired of chewing kinda tough, The cabbage was bland.... just bland. Chances are we will try this place again and hope the food is much better. Chip Laszlo signing out.

My boyfriend and I came in on a weekday. There were about 6 people sitting at the bar and 2 tables were full - so not really busy. We sat down at the bar and the bartender was making drinks in front of us, but never looked up or said hi. She continued to make these drinks for about 5 minutes....she kept tasting and re-making the same thing. Never once did she look up and say hi. I don't think she had much bartending experience at all. My boyfriend finally said something silly to get her attention. She looked up and laughed, but then walked away to deliver the drinks she made. She finally came back and asked us what we wanted. My boyfriend ordered a black and tan - being an Irish bar, this shouldn't be a strange request. The bartender said she could make one, but one of the beers would have to be a bottled beer. But they had both beers on tap and they were clearly not out. I really think she didn't know what he was asking for. We finally got our beer and then wanted to order food. We split an order of fish and chips. When we got the fish, the batter was completely soggy. It tasted OK, but I was expecting a little more crunch. I finished my beer, and wanted to order another one. It took about 5 minutes to get the bartenders attention, even though I said excuse me each time she walked by trying to get her attention. I'm very disappointed in Galvin's - I suggest you hire an experienced bartender who knows what they are doing.

I stinkin' love this place. Friendly folks behind (and in front of) the bar. I had to wait a while for a friend who was running late and got into a great conversation with a couple of the folks along the bar rail. Great mix of older and younger patrons. Always friendly folks here which is something I can't always say for some of the NW side "local" bars in the 'hood. Just enough TVs without being too many, the occasional band, and a FIREPLACE. And oh geez, THE FOOD. Two words: Irish Nachos. But good food from apps through some traditional Irish fare, as well. Currently, they are running a "kids eat free" promotion on Mondays. They always seem to have specials, including a $2 burger night. Family owned by good people (who are actually (gasp) Irish!) who give back to the community.
