    This is an old school Italian restaurant that you feel you walked into your grandmother's house. The smells, the ambiance, the services, the attention, the food, the quality is all awesome at this restaurant. The only downside is the bar area is a little cramped, but when you have limited space, you work with what you got. The owner John stopped by our table, welcomed us and made us feel like more than a guest, but more of family. Regardless of the reason for your visit (business, personal, date, family, etc) this restaurant has something for everyone. We went during restaurant week, so we had an opportunity to try a few dishes. First started off with garlic, garlic bread, which is garlic bread and then they drizzle table side garlic butter on top. After we had a salad. It was a wedge salad with antipasto on top. I had the spaghetti with meatballs (which tasted exactly like my homemade ones and not to sound biased is really good) and my wife had the chicken visouvio. The chicken was moist and not over saturated with sauce. Then the desert. My wife had the chocolate cake, which she said is the best (better than Portillos) she has ever had. I had the tutti fruity spimoni with a pistachio cake surrounding it. Delicious! The wine list is thicker than the Chicago phone book, so plenty of choices as far was wines. Overall, I would say this is the best Italian restaurant in Chicago. I am already booked to return in a few weeks and cannot wait to eat again.

    Chicago restaurants the past few years have been all about reinventing the wheel, or not reinventing it...I don't know, I don't do metaphors. But anyway Formento's has taken all the old school Italian-American fine dining restaurants and treated them as if they opened yesterday. My grandparents used to eat this food at Larco's and Lelli's in downtown Detroit (or if it pleases the court of Chicagoans...Gene and Georgettis), but the food at Formento's would be insulted with that comparison. It has all the makeup of those classic restaurants: big red leather banquets, white table cloth with paper place settings, white shirted/black tie'd servers, Frank and Dean on the radio. The food, though rooted in those classic recipes (garlic bread, antipasto wedge salad, Chicken Vesuvio, Spamoni) is far beyond expectations as only the guys from The Bristol and Balena can bring you. The Bristol has withstood the test of time as my favorite restaurant in the city which is why I went to Formento's in the first place. But I can't wait to tell everyone how amazing this restaurant truly is

    Yup, they get 5 stars! From food, service, to atmosphere everything was perfect. Our waiter was great at explaining the menu and recommending vegetarian options. They were so many things they were willing to modify to accommodate us! Food: Everything was excellent! Chopped salad was amazing! The pasta with vodka sauce and mascarpone & Eggplant Lasagna was excellent. We finished on a high note with the chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream. It is to die for! Great place for a formal evening with a group or a date!

    Our first visit to Formento's was on a freezing cold February Friday and we were stoked to eat some hearty old school Italian to fatten us up for the cold, cold winter. We both enjoy this particular restaurant group's other restaurants immensely so we were looking forward to a good meal. The restaurant was packed, and they were running about 15 min behind on their reservations, so we got a drink at the bar. The full menu is served at the bar as well, which is first come first serve. I definitely recommend making a reservation and sitting in the dining room. The restaurant decor is very old school Italian, with the dark wood and the round leather booths -- I picture Tony Soprano sitting in a booth convincing Uncle Junior not to whack someone here. Since our first visit this past winter we've been back several times both for dinner and recently for brunch. The food is top notch. They start you with focaccia and house made giardinara. The giardinara is the bomb diggity. I would totally buy it if they bottled it. On our various visits we've tried the following: - Prosciutto and Melon - Clams casino - Calamari - Langoustines - Chicken Parmesan - Canestri with Sunday Gravy - Chocolate Cake - Banana Split For entrees, my favorite was the Canestri. This is probably one of the best pasta dishes I've had, amazing flavors (especially if you like pork), and the pasta is housemade and perfectly al dente. The Chicken Parmesan was possibly the most ridiculous dish I've ever seen served in a restaurant, based on its sheer size. It's definitely made for sharing. It literally is half a chicken that they splayed flat, breaded, and fried. One of the thigh bones is even still sticking out, daring you to eat it. For apps, the langoustines were so refined and so delicious. Langoustines are the new foie gras. The sticker shock may get to you after you see the serving size but it's worth getting. They're like a cross between a shrimp and a lobster and if you read up on them you'll see why they are so pricey. Formento's service a scampi version and I pretty much licked all that garlicky breadcrumb mixture off the plate. The prosciutto and melon is a great summer option and they compress the melons, really a great refreshing dish. For desserts, the chocolate cake is the clear winner. The oh-so decadent chocolate cake has delicate layers of crispy hazelnut and is frosted in some sort of silky chocolate ganache that is so pretty it hits to cut into it. The banana split comes with Nutella ice cream and stroopwafel and is also delicious. You really can't go wrong with either dessert. Especially now that Nonna's sells a smaller version for $5. I have made a trip or two solely for that slice of cake. I would say it's best to come with at least a group of 4 to get a taste of many different dishes. Really, that's the only reason I invite people out to eat, for more eating prowess. I mean... uh..I enjoy..the company too....yes. One of my new fave italian restaurants!

    Love the vibe in here but had a major problem with the rude, pushy and ignorance waitress. First she constantly was touching my back when she wanted to put down next new silverware or plates, then made snide remarks about our order and then ruined the birthday dessert surprise for our friend. The food however was pretty good, albeit pricey for the size Giardiniera A Meatballs A Shrimp scamp B- (shell was still on and hard to removed as they were cut in half) Gluten Free pasta with Sunday Gravy) B+ The sausage that came on the side was ok but the gravy was awesome and pasta tasted great! Eggplant parm C (the breading was flavorless and was the eggplant pieces were overdone) With a plethora of Italian restaurants in the city I probably won't be back. Nothing special here.

    I know there are so many different factors and variables that go into having a truly great dining experience, but all the stars must have aligned perfectly, because our dinner last night was amazing, memorable and I would recommend every aspect of our meal! Service - our server, Andrew was extremely knowledgeable about the menu and all of his recommendations were spot on. Appetizer - Shrimp Scampi, it was light and each bite was a burst of delicious flavors! The sauce it was served on was so citrusy and complex that I could have drank it. Entrees - I ordered the Scallops. The portion size was on the smaller side, with three scallops, but I was thankful for this. The scallops were cooked to perfection and literally melted in your mouth. There was a variety of textures with some nuts and cucumbers and once again it was served on a well thought out sauce. Highly recommend! My partner ordered the quail, which he states was one of the best meals he's ever had. It's no wonder why this dish has been with the restaurant since it had been open. The highlight of this meal was the smoked cauliflower (who would have thought?!), but it paired perfectly with the juicy meat and crispy prosciutto and made the meal! Dessert - I'm not the biggest fan of sweets but even I had to admit that the chocolate cake was decadent and delicious. I'm all about texture and there was a nice crunchy component in a few layers which really brought it to the next level! Drinks - Having recently come back from a trip to Singapore, it was a pleasant surprise to see a Singapore Sling on the menu! It is a great refreshing summer drink. I think I've raved enough, but you really can't go wrong with the shrimp scampi, scallops and quail

    It is old world Italian with a modern twist and it's amazing. Often times Italian restaurants are hit and miss with what you order. This restaurant is absolutely amazing. It takes a lot for me to say that about an Italian place. Everything we had was so good. And I love the decor and feel of this place. It is just all so perfect. Some of the items we had included the meatballs (not just any meatball!), caesar salad, buccatini, orecchiette, chocolate cake. We tried so many things, it was all wonderful. Nice wine list as well! Go now! Don't forget to make a reservation!

    Top notch service, yum food, huge wine list and upscale ambience. Perfect place for date nights. We started the night with artichoke and crab dip. The dip was not creamy and sweet but spicy and chunky, very distinct and yummy in its own way. I had the Fusilli Giovanni - basil pesto (nut free) and H drooled over his shrimp scampi. The pasta was fresh and very tasty. Service was perfect, H finished his meal with tiramisu and loved it. Definitely going again!

    For some reason I want to give this place 4 stars, but I can't come up with any reason to deny the perfect score. The vibe here is cool, as many reviews noted. Big space, definitely feels new, but still has an old school aesthetic as well. Let the server help you find a nice glass of wine, it really completes the experience. Really enjoyed the food. The antipasto sampler was perfect for 2 people but could also work for 4. We had the veal and Sunday gravy. Both were really good. Portion was appropriate, we were comfortably stuffed. This is just a good place. Like I said, I can't find anything negative to say!

    Nice restaurant with good outdoor seating. No beers on tap which was disappointing. I ordered the fettuccine Alfredo. The sauce and noodles were very well prepared, good flavoring. Portion was disappointing. Only 5 or 6 bites and my whole plate was gone. If you are hungry go with a carni or other meat main as the pasta is a very small portion.

    My boyfriend and I went to Formento's with his parents to celebrate his dad's 76th birthday. We made reservations at 5:30 on a Saturday night. Arrived at 5:15, seated promptly. We chose a super Tuscan bottle of wine that was delicious. Our server, Dario, was outstanding. Everything you want in a waiter: friendly, welcoming, knowledgeable, and attentive. After we ordered, we received garlic focaccia bread. It was served with homemade giardiniera. It was very tasty and my boyfriend's dad would like it sold to take home! We all ordered the crab and artichoke dip to share. Was cold, fresh, flavorful. Came with clearly house made "ritz" crackers. His parents shared a Caesar salad - done right with fresh anchovies. We shared the caprese salad which was delicious. The Stracciatella cheese was a treat! I ordered the veal piccata. It came sliced, slightly crisp on the outside, with a creamy citrus sauce and capers. It was cooked perfectly and the flavors were perfect. My boyfriend ordered the walleye - prepared in a paper bag with pistachios and a scallion oil. It was moist, flavorful and also cooked perfectly. Dad ordered the Nick's linguine with clams. The pasta is all house made and cooked al dente. The sauce had chilis in it and we all agreed the sauce was overly spicy. Mom ordered the eggplant lasagna which was enjoyed but didn't knock her socks off. We ended with coffee/cappuccino that was great. The service and ambiance made Formento's a real treat.     The service at the bar was great. Very friendly bartenders. Gorgonzola mashed potatoes were amazing. Nonnas spaghetti and meatballs were just ok, really. Tasted like home-made pasta, but the portion was about a third of what you are served at rosebuds for around the same price. For $21 for a pasta dish, it should be a large portion. I feel like I was served a side dish.

    Formento's is a YES! OMG how cute and sexy are you smack dab on good ole restaurant row? That's right I'm talking to you Formento's. It's just a gem! My gf and I hit it up on Saturday night amidst the taste of Randolph crowd. I was a little surprised to see tables available seeing as it was a busier-than-the-rest Saturday night. So I thought to myself hmmm why is that? Well, it's because its HUGE! There are rooms upon rooms and little hidden coves (as least it seems) inside in the joint. So cool. The vibe, as I mentioned, is uber sexual. Drinks....were do we begin. The wine list is comparable to a novel. Pages upon pages of delicious wines. You can seriously show off your wine knowledge here, or in my case, lack there of. I went with a traditional Cabernet and boy was it robust. Hell, I even had a second glass;) my gf went with a red Zinfandel which is traditionally lighter...and muy delicious as well. Food: the menu is diverse filled with old Italian classics complete with a modern twist. For an app we snacked on the crab and artichoke dip (served cold) which was very pleasant and much more than your traditional artichoke dip. For mains we split the chicken vesuvio and the rigatoni vodka. Both were phenomenal. The chicken was cooked to perfection, packed with flavor and the rigatoni was al denti served with a rich creamy vodka sauce. Our server even split our plates for us so we were not reaching over one another fighting for the next bite. How nice is that? Dessert is always a yes so we tried the banana split. Boy was it yummy! A good, and light digestif since our food was more on the heavy side. Formento's has staying power here on Randolph St. They meet all the criteria for great food, service, and ambiance. Well done Formento's....clap, and end scene.

    I liked this place a lot but had a few issues. First even though I had a reservation and showed up early, I still waited about 25 minutes after my reservation time for a table. As for the food, the bread came out slow but was really good, quite spicy as well. We had the fish (branzino) and the Sunday gravy dish. The fish was suppose to be deboned, it did not appear so, and did not appear to have much meat. The flavor was really good, however. The Sunday gravy was an absolute winner. I loved everything about it. For dessert we had the chocolate cake. For a cold chocolate cake, this was by far the best I have ever had. My wife agrees that it was literally out of this world. I will be going back and hopefully the service gets better.

    This review is for a girls night out (GNO) on June 25 2015. Love the space, big comfy booths. For me any dining experience has to do with the food. There is enough to choose from on the menu for alll types of tastes. Good wine list. Here is the thing. Nothing overwhelmed me. Nothing was excellent, it was all just fine. Pasta and fish plates are 4-5 ounčes each. You won't be stuffed and you won't starve. Nonnas appetizer plate was ok. Fried čalamari, standard. Meatball appetizer, was best of all. My liguine with seafood dinner was good and my friends walleye that I tasted was plain, if not bland. I don't think I'm stunned. My italian stanards are Via Carducci in Wicker Park, Vivo. My house serves a mean linguine with clam sauce as well. I do love the area and going out to this place makes me "feel hip:" Hope that makes sen$e. !!

    Waited 20-25mins without having reservations and we were sat at a table in the bar area. Not a bad wait on a Saturday night and not having reservations. Service was not speedy. We were not explained specials or how to best proceed since we were first time diners. The crowd was trendy and wanted to be seen. Funny to watch. Bar had two big screen TVs with the game on. 3-4 bartenders behind the bar at all times. We opted for: Caesar salad, Chicken Parmesan (served with a side of Nonna's spaghetti) Wedding soup (Chicken meatballs) and Nonna's Spaghetti with meatballs. EVERYTHING was delicious. Chicken Parm was the best I have ever had. Spaghetti was perfectly cooked - al dente The meatballs were very rich and so so good. We opted for some sort of chocolate hazelnut mousse cake to celebrate our anniversary. Would have given 5 stars but service did not seem to be a priority or the girl was just overwhelmed with the volume of people she had to take care of. Our food was left sitting in front of us for an extended period of time after we had finished eating. Multiple dirty glasses were left on the table, which was not big to begin with, and even when dessert came out they were not removed. No coffee was offered with dessert. A cappuccino would have gone nicely with the Chocolate Hazelnut cake.

    Stopped in for dinner. Ordered the Roasted Heirloom Beet salad, Calamari Fritti, and Orecchiette & Sausage. The Orecchiate was served undercooked. The server fixed the issue immediately. The service is great. However, the menu has a limited selection. The portions are small for the price.

    The three stars is for the excellent service. On the other hand the food... honestly my friend said it best: it's like a pimped out Honda Accord. It's Italian food without fuss in a cool lofty atmosphere, but at the end of the day it's just a Honda Accord. Music was Moby, and other top 40 delights that just didn't fit what they were going for in the space. Music seemed odd and nothing seemed coherent. Loft, food you could make at home, with Moby. Felt a little odd. That being said if you want excellent service with out anything surprising in your food, this is your place.

    Just had a business lunch here today. it was 8 of us with some out of town guests that we had to impress. Our server stole the show with a polite interruption, brilliant explanation of the menu. While it may have veered on the long winded side, nobody was bothered as she had the correct read on when to enter and exit the stage. It broke the ice, and gave us something to talk about. This is what I call a good server and good service for a proper business lunch (Chicago seems to be in short supply of elegant business lunch places such as these). Can't remember her name (I think it was Jolie pr Jossie?... but I nicknamed her "Money"). Happy to see the changes and new additions to the menu. The food was excellent and very well executed. I dare say that the Italian wedding soup has to be far the BEST TASTING i have had in recent memory, and the Caesar salad is something you just must go and try to see what you are missing (it was stupid good). I washed it all down with a glass of Sencere... another plus for me because most (if not all) Italian restaurants have these crazy nationalistic hang-ups... like only serving Italian wine My only negative comments would be the servers must have clean white aprons (I know I am being picky Money... but a dirty apron does not go with a lovely smile and brilliant service).

    I've got nonas' meatballs that comes in 3 units with 3 small breads to appreciate with it. The red sauce made with fresh tomatoes, herbs and pepper is delicious if you enjoy spicy taste. We also took the carbonara macarroni and the half chicken parmesan, both unique, never tried something like that before! My wife felt a smell of eggs on their cups, forks and knives, but i didnt feel the same. The place was not full (it was something like 30% occupation) and thats why I think that they could be faster to take our orders. the small problems are not issues, worth due the delicious food.

    My friend lives nearby so she planned a dinner for a group of us here this weekend. Valet is available for $12 which is nice and we had a reservation and were seated right away which I also appreciated. Our server was friendly but possibly overwhelmed-we had to ask for things numerous times and he didn't come back for long periods of time. We started with some appetizers. I ordered the porcini bruschetta but I asked for no mushrooms and added capers. He asked if I wanted to add tomatoes, so I don't know if they usually don't come on it or what but I said yes. The bruschetta was very good..we were a large group so this appetizer, as well as the crab dip we ordered, came on what I thought was 2 split plates which I thought was cool. Once the bill came we realized it was actually 2 orders so I am not sure where that miscommunication came from. We ordered 1 of each and got 2 of each. The dip was very fishy and went mostly uneaten at our table so that was doubly disappointing. Someone also ordered the relish tray, but I didn't try that. The focaccia bread that comes to start was VERY good, however it took forever when we asked for more and then again when we asked for butter. I also had to ask for a refill on my diet coke 3 times before our server brought it. Imagine my surprise when towards the end of the meal my drinks suddenly started coming out in bottles; I was NOT happy. I had ordered 3 by that point and usually when pop is in the bottle you know that ahead of time. Once the check came I was glad to see I was only charged for 1. I started with the Cesar salad, which was really good but a small portion for $11. I then got the penne ala vodka which was really good as well, had a spicy kick and was a decent size portion for $16. I ended with a scoop of salted caramel ice cream. It was good but literally a very small scoop for $8. Not worth it. Overall, I don't think I would go back. Portions were small and prices were high for what you got. Service was not at it's best either.

    I've been seeing this restaurant pop up all over Instagram and decided I needed to indulge. We started off with their fried calamari and mozzarella and prosciutto. The kitchen sent us a relish platter which blew our socks off as well. But to be honest, I could have eaten their house-made bread and giardenara. When it came to order, I faced an epic battle between rigatoni vodka and eggplant parm. My waiter swayed me into the latter. What he didn't tell me was that it was as tall as the tower of Pisa. Honestly, delicious. However, the star of the show was the dessert. The chocolate cake was what dreams are made of. It's definitely a great special occasion spot and in the running for my next bday venue. Ciao!

    I definitely have not eaten my way through all the Italian food this city has to offer, but I would not hesitate to recommend Formento's. We visited during restaurant week but did not end up ordering from that menu - the regular menu just looked too good to avoid. We started with their meatballs (recommended as a signature dish) and the antipasti plate/sampler. The meatballs are a side item, not a main course, and they were fantastic - incredibly tender, nicely seasoned, and with a very lightly spicy red sauce. Really really good, I would not miss these if I was visiting again. The antipasti platter was also quite good - some things better than others. It's fun to share with the table, but not really that remarkable. Of note, a meal comprised of a side of the meatballs and a side of the spaghetti would probably leave you very full and happy. My entree was the quail saltimboca - I love saltimbocs dishes, and this did not disappoint. Almost quail confit, served with smoked cauliflower and hazelnuts. I'm not a huge cauliflower fan, but this was good, and the hazelnuts were a great crunch counterpart to the quail, which was very rich tasting. Very good, and definitely worth ordering again. We split the carrot cake for dessert - a massive steakhouse style serving of good cake, with the right cake to frosting ratio. Silly as it sounds, there is actually such a thing as too much cream cheese icing, and this was not an attempt to cover up dry or tasteless cake with frosting. The ice cream it came with was also very good - butter pecan with lots of butter pecan bits. Our service was very good - walking us through the menu...in perhaps a little too much detail, but recommending a few things we ended up ordering and are glad we did. And something definitely worth mentioning, the restaurant was full by the time we left, and the dining room isn't exactly acoustically damp, yet we did not have to scream to be heard. It looks like the sort of place that would be deafening, but isn't. Big points, however they pulled that off. As I said at the beginning, would not hesitate to come back or to recommend this to others. Very good.

    So I get many messages from owners and managers after I place a bad review and TBQH I don't even open them up. For the first time I peeked inside a message from a Formento's manager and they offered me a chance to experience Formento's as intended after apologizing for that terrible chicken parm. Since I usually like restaurants from this group I decided to give it another go. Our waiter was cool, she gave us assurance in experimenting with the menu so if we didn't like something we could send it back no problem. But I was determined to enjoy this dinner menu so I kept the exploration to a minimum. We started off with fried calamari which was your typical dish. We also got the meatballs which were just as great as last time, although they skimped on the sauce(boo). We also tried this stuff pepper dish which consisted of softened red bell pepper wrapped around potato and salted cod. Our waitress labeled it as "refreshing", we simply called it terrible and sent it back. She happily obliged and sent us more meatballs. Also ordered gorgonzola mashed potatoes which had a lot of flavor. For mains we got the chicken vesuvio and the pasta with Sunday gravy dish. The chicken was pretty good, typical roasted chicken with an Italian twist. The Sunday gravy was a heavily salted tomato sauce with a meatball, italian sausage and shredded pork neck. I prefer salty foods but this was VERY salty. I loved it but I'd be surprised if other could handle it. My lady almost died. The experience was much better than the first. Seems like if you stick with the classics you'd be much better off.

    My family and I went to formentos for a birthday I recently had. It is located in a great area with many great restaurants to try. The place was very expensive with small portions. You pay $16-18 for 4 oz of pasta. Learning this I ordered the $27 chicken parm which was very good. However they did not provide enough sauce or spaghetti on the side. The bead is pretty awesome too. I don't think we'll be going back here for over $40 a person.

    Four Words...Trendy Old School Italian My husband and I recently enjoyed a date night at this fresh take on an Italian grandma's kitchen. I appreciate the concept and the food! On trend, dimly lit dining room with fun, quirky elements your grandparents' home probably has. Food was great, but not out of this world amazing. Service was a solid B+ I would recommend for a fun group dinner or date night.

    Went here recently with my date for an early dinner before a show. The place is located in the west Loop and the interior is impressive. The service was generally good but our waiter was so-so at best. Because it was early, there were many very casually dressed diners, an epidemic in Chicago. To begin with, the wine list is staggering. Excellent selections at reasonable prices along with signature cocktails. For starters, we had the prosciutto with some spreads, which was excellent. Copiously lacking with this dish is any crostini. When pressed, the waiter brought 4 Ritz-like crackers, which did not do the trick. Hopefully, the management will add some crostini as otherwise the spreads do not make sense. For our main, we both had pasta, which was excellent. Small portions for an upscale Chicago place but delicious and fresh. For desert the chocolate cake which was so good. Definitely would recommend Formento's for any special dinner. With two drinks each, about $150 including tip.

    Perhaps it was just the day we went, but this place was dead at lunchtime - reservations are definitely not needed. We started out with the meatball salad, which is an actual salad (contrary to the meat-and-cheese-heavy ingredient list) with lots of lettuce. Unfortunately, I wasn't crazy about the taste of the meatballs. I ordered the rigatoni vodka and was underwhelmed. The portion size was fine, but the sauce was bland and the pasta was freakishly chewy to the point of being almost undercooked. Some of the guys ordered sandwiches, including the Frank, and those seemed much better received. The foccacia with house made gardinera was a nice touch and I quite liked both.     Old-school Italian with traditional menu. The clams were delicious. The lamb was tender and the ambiance was nice...especially after a long stressful day. I would come back again...only if someone else paid for my meal!

    Love this addition to restaurant row! Food was delicious. Exactly what the west loop needed - great upscale Italian food with a modern flare. Our service was great, too. No attitude at hostess stand despite it being a busy Friday night and server was friendly. Only two cons are timing & salad options- took us 20 minutes to get our first drinks then they immediately wanted to take our order before we even had a sip of wine. Also thought they could use an additional salad option - wasn't impressed with what we got (beets). We loved the pasta & chicken parm, though. Will definitely be back. The ambiance is great too.

    My party was so excited for a fabulous Italian meal...unfortunately, that was not our experience. Positives: roasted beet salad Negatives: Extremely inattentive service. Eggplant parm was burnt, soggy and over salted. The halibut was cooked and seasoned well, but the vegetables had absolutely no seasoning. The lyonnaise potatoes were forgettable. My two star rating is due to two of our lack luster or poorly executed dishes being comped. However, my table felt like more of a nuisance to the server than guests.

    I really wanted to like this place. My friend highly recommended it, and I trust his palate and expectations in service. I thought I would give it a try. We know good food, value and experience-this wasn't it. We tried Formento's for a going away party. The waitress was very impersonal and I felt like she was annoyed by us. Strictly business, and didn't seem interested in taking our food order. For drinks she disappeared for what seemed like way too long, twice. Never asked about us getting anything started. I had to just tell her we wanted to order. We ordered the meatballs. They were very tasty. Sadly, probably the best thing we ate. Calamari was pathetic. It no flavor, couldn't of been fresh. The focaccia I had was hard. Pasta wasn't cooked properly on my end with the Rigatoni. Portions were small, not like they need to be 'Murican huge, but enough to be satisfying. Tiramisu was very good, but it was pretty one-note. Pretty standard. This was everything Italian food isn't supposed to be. Our dinner was fun, we had great conversation and we covered the gamut, but one thing I noticed, no one talked about the food. No one said "this is delicious." That speaks volumes. And to me, when I got the bill, was a huge disappointment. I was going to give this place 3 stars, but I expect more from a place of this caliber, definitely more than some meatballs. I sent my friends off to a new land with a poor meal. Embarrassing.

    I was REALLY looking forward to eating here due to the reviews and Formento's is in my backyard. So I dragged my friends here a couple of weekends ago. We were there in the evening and the bar was busy so those of us waiting for a table were crowding the hostess stand. The hostesses were getting annoyed. The bar cleared up and we had a drink there and the bartenders were very professional. Then some of the bar tables cleared up so we sat there for dinner. We ordered a bunch of items off the menu but the only thing that stood our was the Caesar salad which I recommend. I was really looking forward to the clams casino but they didn't taste fresh at all. Other stuff like the chicken parm and meatball side were average. The service was polite but very abrupt which I assume it was because we sat in the bar area. I may come back for a drink.

    Went for the first time this past Friday evening with a friend just to try a new restaurant. At the end of the meal, we both strongly concurred we would not be back. Main points of our experience: 1) Although the main room is very large and attractive with nice windows, they marched us into a small back room that has no windows. Whether this was to balance people across waiters or they just did it is not clear but there were plenty of empty seats in the larger room. To make matters worse, they soon seated a family of 6 composed of the 2 parents and 4 children, 3 of which were under 7 years old. The youngest child screamed much of the night (while mommy furiously texted someone on her cell phone) and the loudness was magnified by being in the small, confined space. Tip: Don't accept being placed in the small back room and insist on a table in the much nicer front room. 2) Although we asked the sommelier for a moderately priced bottle of wine, she tried to steer us towards wines that cost a minimum of $90 a bottle. She was knowledgeable and pleasant but the wine she recommended after we asked for a lower priced bottle ($60 bottle) was not very good, even for the lower price. It seemed like you had to spend a good buck on a higher priced wine to get a decent bottle. We both thought the price point on the wines was too high for the menu. They need more and better options in the mid-range. 3) Service was slow and intermittent. We waited a long time for our server to come and then a long time for each course to arrive. The place was busy but they should still be able to handle the volume. I would estimate that it took 10 to 15 minutes too long at each step of the process. Although our waiter said he "liked to talk about food" we don't recall him ever coming back to ask us about each course. He was affable enough but just not helpful. For instance, we ordered "Nonna's" meatballs as an appetizer. When I ordered an entree, Cannestri with Sunday Gravy, it also came with basically the same meatballs. I should have noticed that on the menu but our waiter could have also checked. In other words, he was fine when you asked but he did not offer much on his own. He indicated that the fish of the day, Branzino, was filleted. It wasn't. My friend sent it back and had the head and tail removed. My friend specifically asked if it was deboned and the second waiter said yes. The first few bites each contained bones, including small pin bones, which could have been dangerous had he swallowed one. The waiter did offer to take it back but we did not want to lengthen what was already becoming a long meal. 4) While dining, several people noticeably circulated the room keeping tabs on the tables, probably to estimate availability and turnover. One person was a guy outfitted with an earpiece and microphone in his lapel, like the secret service. He walked through the room every 10 to 15 minutes talking into his lapel the whole time. A second person, a young lady who was initially at the hostess stand also came through at about the same interval but different times. This meant that there was someone eyeballing you and your food - either the FBI guy or the young lady - every 5 minutes. The young lady in particular stared at you and then glanced at your plate as she walked by and wrote something down on a pad she was holding. It was annoying and tacit rushing. One person walking through should suffice. Wish the wait staff had been as attentive as this scout team. 5) And last but not least, the food. I would probably give the food 3 to 3 1/2 stars if I could rate it separately. It was fine but not great. Nothing we had was especially memorable. The meatballs were good but a fairly standard meatball with red sauce (or "gravy" if you like). A relish tray appetizer was fine but nothing stood out on it either. The cannestri - an elbow shaped macaroni - was also ok but slightly bland as was the Branzino save for the unwanted bones. The food would have had to have been wonderful to overcome the noticeable service glitches as well as the general unpleasantness of the claustrophobic back room. But it was just fair adding to the air of ambitions to be something more, but in the end mostly mediocre. With all the competition from well-liked and nearby Italian restaurants such as Piccolo Sogno, RPM, and Bar Siena, Formento's will have to drop some of its pretensions to being a fine dining place and step up its service game as well as its menu quite a lot to remain in Chicago's crowded Italian restaurant game. Otherwise, it could be one and done for many others (I suspect) as well.

    We were very pleased by the service at Formentos. Both Andrew, our waiter, and the sommelier, who didn't introduce himself, were very attentive and friendly. And this is just a beautiful restaurant. We sat in the front room and I think we had the best seats in the house, a corner booth by the front widows. The menu [$$$$$] is made up of what they call "red sauce classics." That just means familiar Italian dishes. I think the chef was challenged to do the very best version of each famous dish. The waiter wants you to understand that you are supposed to pick two or more courses in the Italian style. But Americans don't normally eat that way. Rest assured the modestly priced pastas are large enough to be a lone entree. And they all looked good, based on observing what was ordered around us. The entrees start at $27 and go up from there. I had the chicken Parmesan because one reviewer I read just raved about it. It was a complete half chicken, pounded flat and smothered with red sauce and bubbling cheese. It was OK, but needed salt and the red sauce seemed to be puréed tomatoes, again with no seasoning to spice it up. The cheese was tasteless. All in all, an impressive-looking dish that just missed the mark on taste. My wife had the Branzino (fish), and she thought it was fine. The wine list is many pages long and filled with very expensive choices. I am sure it was carefully "curated." But there are only two chiantis under $50/bottle. Wines by the glass were unfamiliar and unappealing. We are very familiar with Italian reds. Couldn't find any affordable choices here. This was very disappointing. Given the choice between Formentos and nearby Piccolo Sogno, I will stick with Piccolo Sogno every time, where the wonderful Italian wine list is priced just a couple of bucks over retail (which is astonishing). In sum, this is a very lovely, very expensive supper club. On our first and only visit the food was interesting but bland. But I am sure this will become a regular haunt for the one-percenters. If we ever come back, I would bring my own bottle of Felsina Chianti Classico and order one of the pastas.

    A lively space with an interesting menu and bright flavors, but bring your wallet. The chintzy pour on our starter glasses of wine and Prosecco was a disappointing start to the evening but a fair indicator of the price/value of this restaurant. We started our meal with Nonna's Relish Tray, an extremely tasty and contemporary take on a mixed antipasto plate. Main courses of half chicken parmesan and orecchiette & salsicca pasta dish were tasty and satisfying. The sommelier helped us find an Italian blend from their list of "Fifty Or So Wines For Fifty Dollars or Less" that proved to be a great choice. Unfortunately it is not that go-to Italian place that most of Chicago continues to search for. We were big fans of Cafe Bionda in the South Loop before it fell into disrepair and then Salatino's became our bi-weekly standard during its inexplicably short-lived run. Given Formento's high price tag, if you want more premium Northern style Italian, Coco Pazzo, Piccolo Sogno or Davanti Enoteca are all better, and well established nearby options. Try Charlatan if you want a cool new place with better food and a lower price point. Still if you are looking for an Italian place with a nice vibe in the Randolph St. area (and are on an expense account so you don't mind being overcharged) you will find Formento's a good trade up option from Vivo or La Luce.

    Had dinner here with a friend visiting from NJ on Friday evening. First of all, you don't come here for Osteria Langhe style delicate flavors- this is Frank Sinatra's Italian. If you go with that in mind, you will enjoy your meal. We had a nice rum cocktail to start. We ordered a pasta (the orichette) that we shared as an appetizer. We split the (enormous) chicken parmesan as an entree. Seriously, I still brought home half of it. Everything was good, though if you don't like garlic, run. The waiter recommended a nice, if pricey malbec. Good, well informed service. My dad will love this place.

    I kicked off my experience at Formento's by telling my friends "i'm pretty skeptical of this place." I knew the Bristol guys probably did a great job, but I just didn't understand how a red sauce italian joint hits #1 on the hotlist. But, alas, the space is beautiful, the wine list is massive, the pours generous, and the food is wonderful. We had the relish tray, the calamari, and I had the linguini with clams and the chocolate cake. My linguini with clams was definitely the best I had ever had, really rich flavor. The chocolate cake was really great, it had an unexpected layer of wafer that added to its complexity. Also, the entire staff was very nice as we shut the place down at 11:30p on a Tuesday. :)

    Disappointed. Prices are very high for the quality of food, and portions are extremely small (not very Italian at all!). My so-called steak was $38 and was not a good quality piece of meat at all. It had a lot of pieces of fat and gristle, and although I had asked for medium-well, it was simply seared (more like burnt) on the surface and pretty much raw (not rare, raw) on the inside. My husband ordered fish, which was pretty good, but came with absolutely no sides. My kids had some not-so-Italian pasta and the portions were so small that they were still hungry. It's unheard of to eat pasta and still feel hungry afterwards! I believe in second chances, but from my own personal experience, this is one restaurant I can't give a second chance to! Just my opinion. Part II So I received a message from the manager who courteously apologized for my negative experience and offered some gift certificates. I don't normally give restaurants second chances, but I am a sucker for a genuine apology. So we shall try one more time. To be continued...

    Was here past weekend with a group. The building was beautiful. But the food was ok. Nothing stood out. The in-house bread was good, the garlic bread wasn't, it got hard really fast-something you'd get at a pizza place. =/ Appetizer: We got the caesar salad which was good- I do prefer fresh pepper on my salads didn't get asked. The shrimp was ok, beet salad was alright. Entrees: Chicken parmesan was good, the spaghetti that came with it- was not good- All the pasta dishes we ordered were really cold. One member had the steak ordered medium well- came out medium rare so they returned it to cook a little bit longer- came out the same? So that was weird. The lamb chops were cold as well. Other members had the fish special said they liked it? So that was a plus. Dessert: The carrot cake was a little dry. The chocolate cake was nice, big. The donut filled with cream were everyones favorite! I'd recommend those!

    Formento's is an absolutely beautiful dining experience. The ambience is striking, both cozy and elegant. I don't think I've ever seen such an extensive wine list which is a bit overwhelming, but makes it impossible to make a poor selection. The staff is also amenable to answering any wine questions. Everyone is so friendly and attentive! The food was absolutely divine. We had the calamari, ceasar salad, mashed potatoes, roasted cauliflower, rigatoni alla vodka, cavatelli alla norma, and chocolate cake. Dish after dish delivered with truly amazing food. I love this place as a date spot and a place to get delicious italian food. A great addition to randolph!

    We had dinner last night. 9 PM reservation and we were taken to the back room promptly. It's too warm and confined so we opted to wait for the front room. Highly advisable. The place was packed. Largest evening ever. Over 400 saves according to our waiter. Service was a bit strained due to the volume. You could feel it was borderline out of control. Menu was predictably interesting and the Food was average. The salads were overdressed. The pastas were perfectly toothsome but too salty. I had to return mine as the garlic was burnt. I had the whole Branzino and it was sadly overcooked and not warm. I did not send it back as I won't waste a fish. Our server Andrew was fantastic and kept the evening together. However, it won't be enough to bring us back any time

    I came with high expectations knowing this was the Bristol group's new italian addition to their restaurant family and what a great experience! Rich, warm and inviting atmosphere from the bar and dining areas. Upon sitting at the bar i was offered a complimentary glass of champagne!! Wow...lets just say the night started off just right. Their service was spot on and i never got the feeling that this restaurant just opened a week ago. It felt like they've been operating for awhile and that speaks volumes about the management. Now onto the food...everything we ordered was cooked well, flavorful and i would recommend. Plus they had a great wine list. Nonna's Relish Tray - so good and unique Shrimp Scampi - absolutely divine langoustine!!! Half Chicken Parmesan - wow Canestri with Sunday gravy - just get it! Cant wait to return

    They had a great and large wine list here, and that's the reason it's at three stars. we started out at the bar and very slow service as it was a fairly busy night. Once we were able to be seated, the waitress was slammed and kept running over and apologizing for the wait. After a while, we got the focaccia bread and giardiniera, which was the highlight of our meal. We ordered the spaghetti and meatballs and the orecchiette & sausage. The spaghetti noodles had a weird texture and taste to them that I didn't really care for, but the meatballs were fairly flavorful. The orecchiette was a little better, my boyfriend enjoyed it immensely more. We asked for a wine recommendation and got a full rundown - the waitress was very knowledgable. However, her response when asked about a cab was that she doesn't really drink that so she doesn't know.

    Nice to see another Italian restaurant in the neighborhood. Really enjoyed the atmosphere and the service was great. The burrata that came with the beet salad was really good. The black bass for 2 special looked nice on the plate but not sure it needed the sauce that was poured over the top. Will definitely be back for round 2.

    Dislikes: - Small Portions - On the expensive side - Bad Service. Our server messed up both of my friends appetizer & entree orders. Waiter was not attentive what-so-ever (needed to be waived down multiple times). - They took away the soap from the bathroom after a certain time in the evening (even though the restaurant was still open and people were still eating? I believe I read they did this for the women's bathroom as well?) Aside from my dislikes, the food itself is excellent. But I'm skeptical about returning due to this bad experience and expensive small portions.

    I am so torn on Formentos. My husband and I walked in here in a Saturday night with a reservation and were immediately impressed by the interior. Then we waited at least 2 minutes past our reservation time to walk right by the impressive interior to the back room where we were banished. The room was loud with several large parties and 2 top tables that were on top of one another. I guess a positive was that our neighbors were all really friendly but this did not work for a date night for us and I would actually refuse to be searing back there again. We also had mixed reviews on our food. We started with a side a meatballs and were not disappointed, I wouldn't hesitate to order again. I also loved the focaccia bread they started with I just wish they gave us more than 1 little piece. Now on to the meal, my husband order the quail saltimbocca and this a fun twist on the classic and was very satisfying. I ordered the bucatini because this was one of my favorite dishes when we were in Rome. The waiter did his job by aggressively trying to up sell me on something in addition reminding me the small portion size even after I had stated I was ok with a true Italian portion size. I didn't feel this was small, I felt it was enough. The portion size was definitely what I would expect in Italy, unfortunately the bucatini was nothing I would find in Italy. This was a disappointing dish to me that lacked on more than one front. First off, the pasta was slightly over and the pork that was in this dish was more like a shredded pork rather than a guanciale or a pancetta. I feel like the dish really needed that texture of one of those crispy pork products and that could have made the difference. For a side dish we had the Brussel sprouts which I thought were good. Overall I wanted to love the place being that it is in my neighborhood but couldn't, however I would go back but would refuse the back room seating and would not order the bucatini again. I hope my next visit leaves me wanting to come back for more.

    A good ole hearty Italian restaurant with proper portion sizes? It's a dream come true. Our big table ordered a variety of appetizers. The meatballs were outstanding. I had the filet. It was phenomenal. Other hits were (of course) the chicken parmesan and the chicken vesuvio. They have an extensive wine menu including a list of 50 wines for under $50 (for when I return on my shoe string budget). And, because it was my brother's birthday, the chocolate cake was divine.. my dad readily admitted it was head's above Portillo's and that is all the endorsement you need, really. A really wonderful experience. I'll definitely go back.

    Formento's is it. It's what I've been waiting for in the West Loop. The food is perfect. Classic decor, great music leather booths. You half expect to see Dean Martin walk in. To me, this is where a man takes a lady and treats her like a lady. I read another review that mentioned small portion sizes, and I smiled because to me, that's one of the pluses. You get pasta courses that are sized CORRECTLY, like they would be in Italy. Try the orecchiette with sausage and broccoli rabe. Savory and cooked perfectly, al dente. Served in a portion size that doesn't have you painfully waddling out of the restaurant. A must reservation to make in the West Loop.

    Went here for lunch today and it was an excellent time... The food was prepared and presented in true 5 star fashion. I went here for lunch with a friend. We ordered a vitello tunata which was done very well... the veal was shaved and served with a tuna/caper sauce and a radish. My friend had the sunchoke soup. He felt it was very good. It came in a large bowl and was presented very well. I had an heirloom beet salad that was served with the same radish that came on the vitello and a foam that was out of this world. On the beets were capers and blood orange that was delicately done and provided an exceptional balance for the flavor palette on the dish as well as an interesting textural contrast. My usual test for any Italian is spaghetti and meatballs... and this place did not disappoint! The pasta was true aldente and the meatballs were done exceptionally well in terms of both flavor and texture. The room was exceptionally well done in terms of design, on the edge of trendy but not at the expense of being warm and inviting. Our server was great, we did not have to ask for a refill on anything and she went out of her way to explain anything on the menu as well as how it was prepared. For dessert we had the bombolini, they were AMAZING! First off we were expecting one and got three large ones and they came garnished with a fennel sugar. They were perfectly cooked and something that should not be missed! I will be back and will check out some of the other menu offerings.

    I took my boyfriend to Formento's for his birthday and it was a wonderful experience overall. The antipasti wedge was amazing, and so was the chocolate cake! They have interesting and delicious cocktails, as well as an extensive wine list. Our waiter was attentive and knowledgeable. We had a 6PM reservation on a week night so it wasn't especially crowded, and we got an excellent table. I would definitely go back!

    It was OK. Was looking for a nice Italian dinner but the food was just ok. It needed flavoring. Not sure what was going on. Being Italian, I know that I'm super picky but I can still recognize good food when I have it. It was just blah. Having just been to Osteria Langhe the weekend before, it was easy to see the difference in flavoring. The service was great. It is a little loud in the back room but it was fine. We had a corner table. The worst part was sitting next to this pretentious dude that was describing the wine in a way that made you want to slap him. We get it, it's good. Move on. I really wanted to like this place but it might need some updating.

    I went with my husband , we were visiting from NYC after looking through yelp we choose Ferment's, the place was really nice , romantic and lovely interior I ordered the shrimp scampi and it was not available so they brought us a complementary pasta dish it was great we also ordered the Eggplant partisan it was really good and instead of the shrimp we ordered the Lamp chunk , to be honest we could not eat it it was fishy and too greasy for our taste , they were kind enough to take it off our bill great service 5 stars, the staff were really nice special Elie Farhan he was really kind

    The restaurant is really nice and the atmosphere is nice too, but the food was not good at all. The bread and giardiniera was a weird combo. We did not like the giardiniera. The Caesar salad was good and probably the best part of the entire dinner. The spaghetti and meatballs dish was weird tasting. The sauce needed a pinch of sugar to offset the bitterness and acidity of the tomatoes. The meatballs were decent. The noodles had a really really weird taste, the texture was odd and so was the flavor. They are home made but tasted as if the pasta dough was very over worked causing the texture to be extremely chewy. The noodles were relatively thick too which added to the chewy texture. I can't figure out what the weird taste was but maybe a different type of flour is used which caused the offputting taste. My boyfriend had the pasta with clams, squid, mussels, clams, and scallops. The dish had the same noodles as the spaghetti and meatballs dish so they were weird tasting here too. The seafood was good but everything was very spicy. There are better places to get Italian in this city, I recommend Prosecco or J.Rocco's.

    Very excellent experience. A+ service from the entire staff. Ate with 7 and we ordered for 10, nearly eating 75% of the menu. I'll say the homemade mozzarella was lacking salt. But honestly, it was almost offensive how incredible all the pastas were (carbonara, scampi, gravy, lasagna, rigatoni with sausage). The Branzino (fish that day) was masterfully prepared and phenomenal, as were the lamb chops. Sides included the Gorgonzola potatoes (insane), "creamed" escarole (f yes) and grilled corn with parmesan. All were great, particularly the escarole. Slightly bitter and perfectly seasoned. Highly recommended this place if you're in the mood to carb load. Excellent wine list as well. Haute Randolph street location but prices were super reasonable.

    The food was great, the service was fantastic. The desserts, in particular, were fabulous. Overall, a great addition to the family of Italian restaurants in the neighborhood. However, I thought it was a bit pricey and the ambiance a bit artificial (it tries too hard...). Either buy into the whole "this is your grandmother's dining room" motif, full on, or don't bother. For the same money, you could get two dinners at Francesca's where, in my opinion, the food is just as good (though service is not).

    I had such high hopes for this place, but walked away utterly disappointed. To begin, we arrived 5 minutes early for our 7:45 reservation only to be told that they were running 15-20 minutes behind (from reading the reviews this seems to be their standard opening line) so we grabbed a seat at the bar. I'm not exactly opposed to waiting 15-20 minutes (although not ideal), but 40 minutes later we were finally seated. Next, we were greeted by our server and ordered an antipasti. We were pleasantly surprised by the complimentary focaccia bread and housemade giardiniera. The focaccia was pretty standard and the giardiniera was interesting. I'm not really sure what else to say about it. There was no heat to it and tasted a bit "vinegar-ish". We received our antipasti (the calamari fritti) and at the same time ordered 2 macaronis (pastas), two cantorinis (sides) and another drink. This is when things seemed to go off the rails. Our server was intent on convincing us that we shouldn't just be ordering pastas and sides, but instead should be ordering those in preparation for an alla griglia or pesce & carne (mains). When she realized that we were happy with our selections she seemed to lose any interest in our table. We ate the calamari which was overcooked and rubbery. The accompanying red sauce was very bland. A short while later we received our pastas and sides. The cavatelli alla norma (ricotta & Sicilian eggplant ragu) had very little eggplant to speak of (possibly 3 tiny pieces the size of a mushroom slice), but more than enough salt (to the point where it was almost inedible). The bucatini alla romana (spicy tomato sauce, nduja & pecorino romano) was anything but spicy (and quite bland), contained maybe 1 bite of nduja and just enough pecorino romano so that you knew it was there. The roasted cauliflower was crunchy so we asked that it be roasted a bit longer. When we received the dish again it was burnt (yet interestingly enough still crunchy). Nonna's meatballs were really the only highlight of the dinner, but again, the sauce was very bland. We spent the final 20-25 minutes of our dinner without any water or drinks. We tried to flag down our server, but that was a lost cause. Finally she arrived with dessert menus (still not even taking notice that we had 4 empty glasses sitting in front of us). We had no interest in what we would expect to be a subpar dessert, but would have enjoyed another drink had she asked. All-in-all, such a disappointment (an expensive disappointment for the portions) and an unfortunate addition to the West Loop.

    Went here with a large group. The service was good but the pasta entree portions were so small. Tiny, in fact. So many of us had disappointed faces and said "Where's the rest of it?" Not very good value for a fairly pricey restaurant. The calamari appetizers could have been a little more crispy and, again, very small portions. We ended up going to an old favorite down the street for dessert, Cafe Ciao, which has the best Tiramisu and Bread Pudding. Not going to come back here anytime soon.

    Solid experience at Formento's. Booked a 7pm res on a Friday night. Showed up early and had a fantastic Old Fashioned at the bar. The bar area isn't anything special, but the bartender was great. Moved to the dining room at 7:00 and was pleased with the space. Large windows in front on Randolph give a lot of natural light. We had Ashley as a waitress and she was the best part of the experience. Fantastic waitress. We tried the crab and artichoke dip - very fresh, not the overly cheesy warmed up dip you'd get at a bar; this was chilled and very fresh. You could taste each individual component. Also ordered the quail saltimbocca and chicken parm. Both were good, but the chicken parm was enormous! Enough to fill two people. Overall a good restaurant, good experience.

    We were told Randolf was the street to eat on by some locals. We ended up at this place because they have a lovely patio and there was no wait. The service was axing. They have a wide selection of wines to choose from. We started with the clams which were very good. I had the shrimp pasta which was in an amazing butter sauce. The food is very decadent and delicious. I don't know that it is a place I would feel like I have to return to during Chicago visits but it was a very satisfying Italian meal.

    Started with the Porcini Bruschetta, which was good, but not near as good at the Canestri with Sunday Gravy, meatballs and fennel sausage that I devoured. The half chicken Parmesan actually takes up an entire plate and can be shared by three people. The Brussels sprouts with date gremolata were terrible - overcooked, chewy, and bland. The massive carrot cake was delicious and easily shared by 2-3 people.

    What a great addition to the neighborhood! Formento's boasts a conscientious staff, exceptional wine list, and old school italian cuisine that will keep people coming back. The canestri with Sunday gravy is not to be missed and the other pastas are worth trying as well. It pains me to say this, but both the carrot and chocolate cake look better than they taste. I would not let that dissuade you though. The pasta is what I went for and I was not disappointed.

    Had a superb experience at the new italian guy on the block. To begin, the decor/ambiance is beautiful, warm, and inviting. The music and lighting were spot on. The food was exquisite (have the rabbit!!!!). Service was flawless, highly knowledgable, helpful in guiding us, and on point without being overbearing. I can't wait to return!

    We arrived 5 minutes before an 8 reservation. They told us when we checked in that they were 20 minutes behind schedule. We would have been okay with the 20 minute extra wait but once that passed we asked again and they said another 15 minutes. Altogether we waited 45 minutes to sit down. Once we ordered we had a FaBULOUS waiter who understood we were very hungry. He put the order in immediately and was always making sure we were okay. The food was good. The atmosphere in the main room was super cool but the small room did not have the same atmosphere.

    Wow. Molto grazie and bravo B. Hospitality Co. (the people who brought us The Bristol) for opening this fantastic new Italian "throwback" restaurant. I went on the 2nd night of service (Formento's opened to the public on 14Jan), and all I can say is wow. The ambience is so cool -- old school red leather banquettes, dark-ish wood paneling, white table cloths, little old lamps with lampshades. Feels like an classic Italian restaurant. As for the menu, I recommend Nonna's Relish Tray to start -- little bites of pickle-y, briny goodness, although there could be more Bagna Cauda in those olives. Favorites on this tray were the Rinforzo Salad and the Sweet Potato Cannoli. Also recommended: the Canestri with Sunday Gravy - red sauce was meaty perfection, not overly seasoned, and went perfectly with the Canestri, a pasta that resembles a medium sized Conchiglie and had a marsala or balsamic bite to it. The Cioppino Calabrese - not American nor San Francisco sized, but so full of flavor AND WITH HEAD-ON SHRIMPS!!! The Rabbit Cacciatore - dark AND white meat rabbit, achingly tender and flavorful. We had a Hazelnut Trifle (reminiscent of tiramisu) which was satsifying but not overly exciting. And, if you want a dry cappucino (redundant, I know), ask for it -- the cappucino we were served was more "au lait" than cappucino. Regardless of the ending, the beginning and middle were just raveworthy. Service is new, so your patience with some minor errors and mispronunciations will be rewarded with Chef Tony Quartaro's updated take on Nonna's heart-warming classics. Salute or Cin Cin!

    Great service, good food and atmosphere. My only complaint was lack of vegetarian options. We had a large group of 11 and 2 of us were vegetarian. Only veggie entree was eggplant. I wound up with a wonderful beet salad and then several vegetable side dishes as a result. The roasted Brussel sprouts were excellent.

    Don't waste your time. Soft chewy pasta. Watey sauce. Thirty minutes to wait for a drink. Also one of us was gluten free, we came here because they had gluten free menu and on the website there were way more options like a fettuccine Alfredo. Guess what - this wasn't on their gf menu. The gf person was really disappointed this wasn't a real menu item - false advertising.

    We were seated right away as soon as we arrived for our 6:30 pm reservation. The restaurant wait staff is attentive. Our waiter was Ivan and he was simpático. Kiran, the manager, also stopped by the table and asked how everything was. We had chianti, which was very light but good. The cabernet we ordered afterwards was a better choice for our preference for full-bodied wines. The plate portions are a good size for 2 to share. We shared a Caesar salad, the rigatoni vodka and the half-chicken parmesan. The rigatoni had a very pleasant spiciness and the chicken was deboned and breaded with excellent seasoning. The only thing was the tomato sauce on the chicken was perhaps piled a bit too heavily, but it could be easily scooped off. We were too full to consider the dessert list so we skipped that. Espresso and macchiato at the end were good.

    We dined here on 3/08: This was an excellent experience overall, though there were a few minor issues, I would definitely go back again. First, the issues: We had a reservation for 7pm. We were not seated until 7:35pm - strange, since we were standing right in front of an empty huge booth exactly like the one they ended up seating us in. The beer list needs a fixin' - it's horrid, now that is not to say they are focusing on beer, however, their selections leave much to desire. Vegetarian options are few, but they will accommodate if they are able. Interestingly enough, the meat dishes were HUGE, and the vegetarian pasta dishes were TINY. Go figure. I think they have that backwards somehow. The cocktail that I tried, the Stinger, was YUMMY beyond words. The escarole was delish, and my PENNE ALLA ROMANA (without the Nduja) was good. The birthday boy's CAVATELLI ALLA NORMA was so tiny it was shameful... and he with the biggest appetite. Thankfully the escarole supplemented his dinner, along with the lovely also tiny, relish tray we ordered. The garlic bread was fantastic and the two meat eaters were thrilled with their dishes. We shared a carrot cake and a tutti frutti spumoni - also wonderful. I would say, overall, the service, the food, and the old Italian speakeasy feel was a nice evening out.....the only things that they need to improve upon are their portions for the vegetarians (no, we all don't exist on salad alone! ) and their hostess/seating organization. Other than that, we will definitely go back!

    Great traditional Italian atmosphere with a modern Italian menu. Sat outside during lunch which was great. I had the Pesto Giovanni pasta with gluten free pasta. It was great. The portion was just right for lunch and felt very light despite the pasta. I have heard their meatballs are amazing. My lunch partner had the meatball salad and said it was great.

    Service needs improving, which will come with time (I felt like plates were getting pulled out from under me at some points). Seating area was comfortable between tables & bar was fitting for a bourbon on the rocks while waiting for a pretty girl--preferably Blanton's, the original single-barrel bourbon. Food proved to be richly refined, while the meal preceded with jumbo lump crab meat for house made "ritz" crackers, linguine with clams, and the Branzino looked delicious even though I didn't taste. I will be back.

    This place only opened a few days ago??? Easily a 5-star rating to Formento's for perfectly prepared food, excellent service and a beautiful dining room. We had the Sunday Gravy and Branzino. $22 for Branzino was quite fair considering I've paid double at other highly regarded restaurants in this city. Not pretentious like some spots around the city, very friendly and one of the best bars I've seen. Super comfy leather chairs w/ backs and armrests and a couple TVs if you want to catch the game. Bathrooms are a plenty and all of the private sort which is always a welcome touch. Oh, and a BOOK of wine at least 40 pages but a convenient page with by the glass options some of which are under $10. We didn't try dessert but I'm sure to be back and give it a go next time.

    I have been to Formento's twice now and both experiences have been marked by outstanding customer service and very good food. Each time I have been there the staff made us feel special by offering a free extra or taking more time to talk to the table in detail. It didn't hurt that their signature red sauce made my boyfriend nostalgic for his Italian grandmother and they gave us a to go container of it just because he liked it so much. We will be back!

    Amazing. B. Hospitality Co. has done it again. If I hadn't known, I'd have thought they have been open for months, if not years. Both the food and service were completely on point. The meatballs may have been the best dish of the night - so simple yet so delicious. The rabbit was also superb and possessed a texture that I've never before experienced. It completely broke down in my mouth and was so silky smooth and fall off the bone tender. Service was impeccable. Formento's is truly worth checking out and I'm sure you'll want to go back.

    The only reason I am giving this restaurant more than one star is because our waitress was lovely and the meatballs were good. Besides that, this place was a complete disappointment. While I was waiting for a date to arrive, I took a seat at the bar. I told the bartender that I do not want to order a drink until my date arrives and asked for a glass of water. The bartender repeatedly insisted that I should have a drink and then suggested I try some wines. I asked to taste the house Chardonnay. He poured me a taste of a very mediocre wine. I told him that I did not like it and will just wait for my friend to arrive until I order a drink. He then opened a bottle of a different wine and persisted to tell me that I will love the bottle he's opening and to just taste it. The wine was fine so I agreed to have a glass. My date arrives and he orders a mixed drink and asks for the bill since we are going to be seated for dinner. The bill comes and to my surprise (and complete awe, my glass of wine was $25. I have no problem ordering and/or paying for the wine, but the deceitful up-sale by the bartender was insulting and embarrassing for me seeing that my date was paying and my morals are that's it was presumptuous of me to order a $25 glass of wine. I specifically asked the bartender for the "house" brand and the decent thing that he should have done was inform me about the higher price and allow me to make an informed decision. We then proceeded to have dinner. As I mentioned, our server was lovely and she recommended the meatball appetizer. It was delicious. My fish on the other hand, was inedible. I walked out that night hungry and angry. I was with a different friend last night and as we were walking in the area and he mentioned that Formentos is awful. He told me a similar situation he and his gf had at the bar and how he didn't like the food. We discussed how pretty the restaurant is but what a disappointment it was. I couldn't believe he had a similar experience. I don't like bashing but now that I know others have had similar experiences, I feel I need to share.

    My first dinner at Formento's was wonderful, and will definitely not be my last. The ambiance is sleek and fresh, while still reminiscent of intimate, old school Italian joints. It's clear that every inch of this place was thoughtfully designed, which is really impressive, since the space is MASSIVE. The wine list is incredible. I can't pretend to be a serious oenophile, so when I first saw the wine "book" of over 600 wines on my table, I was a bit intimidated. However, the wines by the glass and bottles under $50 pages made it easy to get started. Plus, it's way more than just a list. It has just enough information throughout to help guide and inform the guest about the thought process behind the list, wine making and wine makers, etc. Still, you can always just ask one of the sommeliers to help you find a wine that is right for you. We certainly did! The menu was big but not too big, and everything we had was perfectly seasoned and delicious. I went with a larger group, so we got to sample quite a few dishes. For me, the standouts were some of the old classics taken to a new level: Wedding Soup, Frutti di Mar, Linguine & Clams, Chicken Parm, and Meatballs. The chocolate cake owned us (in the best way possible). Definitely needs to be shared. The service was exceptional. While the vibe was friendly and relaxed, the staff was extremely knowledgeable and committed to high quality, attentive service. All and all, a great experience. Looking forward to going back.

    Wow! The food was outstanding. I don't like the taste of meat or game and I loved the quail. I was with a group of 8 girls and we were those 8 girls that servers hate. I know, I was a server. But Nosheen, our server, was so wonderful. She had awesome recommendations and let us taste the wine before we ordered it. And she was so patient when she was trying to take our order and we wouldn't stop yapping! I ordered the rigatoni vodka and it was great. It had a little spice too. Do not miss the Gorgonzola mashed potatoes. They look runny when they come out but OMG. They were delicious. I also tasted the spaghetti with meatballs, beet salad (excellent), Sunday gravy, and pesto. All phenomenal. Then we ordered dessert, which we hardly ever do. Carrot cake, chocolate cake, salted caramel and butter pecan ice cream. Also worth it. I will definitely be back. And I recommend going with a group so you can taste everything. Don't expect Italian buffet style portions but enough to make you full while finishing every bite. Also round-ish tables so your group can all talk!

    Came here with the family just three days after it opened and everything was perfect! We ordered a ton of appetizers to share, the meatballs were a favorite. The bread they put on the table was delicious. We ordered the gorgonzola mashed potatoes = amazing, the eggplant, chicken parmesan, pasta dishes and more. Everyone was very happy with the service and their meals. Can't wait to go back, thankfully it's only three blocks from my condo!

    Amazing food, amazing service~ takes you back to old school traditional Italian food. I'll need to go back to try more dishes from the menu! Relish tray is a must if you're with a party of 3-4 to share together while having your first drink and looking through the menu~ at the end of your meal please please get their chocolate cake.     Loved my experience here last night! This is a beautiful new addition to the West Loop-- I was amazed to see how large the space was, and it is done beautifully! The restaurant is definitely more formal and traditional than many of your typical West Loop spots like Au Cheval. We're talkin' white table cloth service and waiters dressed up to the nines. Our waiter, Andrew, was awesome! He spent tons of time with us describing each dish thoroughly and giving us a real understanding of the time and creativity put into each dish. The other staff members were on top of their game as well-- especially restaurant manager, Henry, who was checking in on all the tables and making sure each guest felt very special. I love when a restaurant takes an extra step and does this. After much deliberation, we ordered the beet salad to start, the rigatoni a la vodka with pancetta, the , the brussels sprouts (MUST ORDER), and the carrot cake. Of the 5 dishes, 3 were "the best we'd ever had" these being: - brussels sprouts-- incredibly unique, sweet preparation, absolutely to-die-for - beet salad- much more going on than your typical beet salad; the cheese was incredible! - Canestri with Sunday Gravy- AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME The other two dishes, the rigatoni a la vodka and the carrot cake were simply outstanding as well. This is a great spot to come enjoy a nice long dinner. I could imagine it with work colleagues (for a nicer event), a date, or a family get together. I cannot wait to come back and try some of their seafood and meat options!

    Was impressed by the sleek decor and ambience when we first walked in. Our server was very friendly and attentive throughout the evening. I was with 3 other people and we ordered the red peppers and crab and artichoke dip to start. We were not blown away by either dish and were actually a little disappointed. However, we all enjoyed our pasta dishes. Best carbonara and vodka sauce pastas I've had in a long time. Our server recommended the Gorgonzola mashed potatoes so I had to try them. They were tasty but had to be eaten with a spoon because they were extremely soupy. Not what I was expecting. We skipped on dessert but the selection looked amazing. We were glad we went but probably won't be a repeat since it was pretty expensive for what you get and you can find good italian meals elsewhere.

    This place is amazing. We had a mix of items family style, not a single one disappointed. The decor is beautiful, mixing classic Italian with a modern vibe, its literally the best of both worlds. You should try the shrimp scampi, the meatballs or the whole fish dinner, absolutely awesome!! We will be back without a doubt!

    Amazing food with a definite Italian home cooking feel. They have many rooms so the place feels smaller then it is, definitely will get a little more privacy. The clams casino were good but small dish. I hear the shrimp scampi and calamari fritti is amazing so would try that instead. We had the quail saltimbocca and the half chicken parm. I personally judge an Italian place by their chicken parm and they hit this one out of the park. I personally didn't love the quail but Mikey liked it. Quail is too gamey to me.

    I loved the ambience the minute I walked in! The restaurant is beautiful and comfortable. The food is good but not great. The pasta portion I had as an entree was the same size as a side. The bill really added up, plan on $70 pp with one drink and split dessert. Did not comp Birthday dessert. We enjoyed the antipasto tray. I would recommend going once but not sure I would return.

    First step into Formento's had me relaxed and energetic by the vibrant and beautiful Italian decor. The wine prices were very fair and the waitstaff was friendly and remarkable! The dinner served us large portions and the carrot cake was good (but not exceptional). Overall, I had a great experience and will be back

    Great Service but food not worth price We made this discovery as we were headed to a different place and figured we'd try something new. It has only been open for a few weeks. The decor is rustic elegance, very romantic, and on the darker side. Also, the bathrooms (important to me) are perfect in every way a bathroom can be. The service was impeccable. The wait staff was knowledgable and friendly and made suggestions. We agreed to split the lobster pasta and strip steak. The pasta was a touch spicy. We hesitated because I can't take any heat, but my husband loves it as spicy as possible. My mouth had some tingle but the flavor was very very good so it was worth the little sting. I was surprised at the small portion size though. The steak was ordered med-rare. It was closer to rare, but I hate sending food back, so we kept it. There was so much fat and gristle and (gross warning here) I had to remove pieces from my mouth so as not to choke. Since the steak (looked a little small for 16 oz) was served with absolutely nothing on the side, not even garnish, there was no place for me to hide it on my plate. I tried to cut around the fat but it was difficult. Plus, for $55.00 I shouldn't have to search for the edible parts. The flavor was good. Deserts were huge and delicious. I had the chocolate cake and my husband had the carrot cake. We needed doggy bags for those, but my husband complained that he needed to fill up on dessert. The wine was disappointing, but that was on us. We took the suggestion of the sommelier but could have stuck with something we knew or recognized. It was way too floral and never opened up. Over all I'd return and make some different choices, but because of the prices probably for a special occasion only. Again, great atmosphere and staff, just over priced for the portion size, and the ala carte thing. Maybe in a few more weeks some changes may make the difference.

    To my detriment, I went to Formentos with the thought that maybe it would be the new Bavettes of Italian food (something about the look of and the hype surrounding the restaurant led me to this premature conclusion). I was really disappointed, but I can't quite pinpoint why. The crowd at 9pm on a Friday was really obnoxious - loud, one drunk woman telling people to stop staring at her, and lots of women in fur. I had two very mediocre glasses of red wine (neither being their house wine). And the food was very meh - I love spicy food and will eat it to the point of tears, but the linguine and clams was so spicy that I couldn't taste the clams, or any of the side dishes we ordered. The service was good, but nothing about the restaurant makes me want to return.

    When entering Formento's on a busy Friday night we were immediately welcomed with the smell of bleach. I'm glad they are a clean restaurant but not the best first impression. Hostesses were very pleasant and although we were 15 minutes early for our reservation we were seated immediately. The decor is very nice but the restaurant was too loud to have normal conversation. Our waiter was professional and competent and we had no issues with service at all. The pasta portions were smaller than expected but my carbonara was very good. My Wife ordered the oricchiette and sausage which the menu listed with broccoli rabe but was served with asparagus instead. We both love asparagus so initially this was not an issue but upon tasting the asparagus it was marinated and did not fit with the flavor profile of the rest of the dish (which tasted very good without the asparagus). Overall Formento's was not bad but was not great.

    I've been to Formento's 3 times now. My experience has improved at each visit. I took my mom for her birthday and she said it was the nicest restaurant she ever visited. We love the cocktails! classic cocktails are so refreshing. We love the Relish tray, canesestri with Sunday gravy, meatballs and chicken parm! I'm planning on having my next company dinner here. Enjoy!

    Server brought complimentary focaccia with rosemary seasoning. Very tasty. Started with Nonna's Relish Tray $16 that our party of 4 split. Just enough for 4 people with an interesting assortment of olives, sweet potato cannoli, beat cubes, radicchio,eggplant and giardiniera. What was really great was the Antipasti Wedge $12, a generous wedge of iceberg lettuce where salami, provolone, tomatoes, peperoncini and mortadella is thinly sliced and placed into the lettuce and then covered with a sweet Italian vinaigrette. When I ordered the salad I asked my wife if she wanted to split it but she wanted to save room for desert so she declined. That is until the salad arrived and she asked for a taste and wound up eating half the delicious salad. We highly recommend this Antipasti Wedge salad. For our main course 3 of us ordered the Canestri with Sunday Gravy $22, an Italian family traditional meal that had a side of meatballs and fennel sausage served with Canestri, a large hollow macaroni type pasta. Having eaten this dish homemade in Italina households, this version ranks right up there with what Nonna makes. The portion size was neither large (Maggianos portion) nor small and was more than sufficient. One of our party ordered the Quail Saltimbocca $28 and thoroughly enjoyed the dish. We split the Tutti Frutti Spumoni ice-cream $9. Service was efficient and the waiter very helpful with suggestions. We intend to go back and try other items such as the Halibut in paper or the whole fish, but what ever we order next time there is no doubt we will get the Antipasti Wedge salad.

    Excellent service! The food is good, comfort, American/Italian. We had the prosciutto (amazing texture with 3 condiments: apple butter, pickled cabbage, crispy cheese), clams (I skipped these), antipasti wedge salad (yummy!), chicken Parmesan (you should skip it), beef filet (delicious! Comes out more rare than ordered), and the rigatoni alla vodka (nice kick!). We also had a nice bottle of Chardonnay. It was all delicious and left us too full for dessert. The portions are pretty big, so order and share!

    My third visit to the West Loop's new Formento's was the best so far, and they've all been great! From Ray the Bartender's excellent concoctions and conversation, to the incredible service from the entire waitstaff and the warm and welcoming hosts that make you feel at home when you first enter, everything about this place screams classy yet comfortable. The decor is incredible, with an ambiance which is perfect for both intimate gatherings, as well as, larger groups of friends/family. All of our food was exceptional with highlights being: The Relish Tray, the Shrimp Scampi(actually large langostines), buttery garlic bread, lardo-wrapped Tuna Tetrazzini, Quail and the Half Chicken. And, for dessert, the chocolate cake is a must! The wine list is not only robust and diversified but also incredibly well organized. Steve the Sommelier was quite helpful and found us two very unique bottles that my entire group really enjoyed. Run, don't walk, to this new Italian gem!

    Trying for fine dining but not even close. We dined at 6 pm on Saturday at the bar because there were no unreserved tables available. Service was very slow despite what seemed to be sufficient staff. After looking at the limited uninspiring menu we thought about going elsewhere but it took so long to get drinks that we didn't have time. I had canestra with Sunday gravy and a glass of house red and my friend had cioppino and a drink beforehand. After a substantial wait, the canestra did not disappoint but the cioppino was not so good (salty, like they started with Sexton lobster base, with mushy shrimp and chewy squid). The house foccacia was good but that's hard to screw up. We ordered a coffee but it took so long to come we had to leave before it arrived. Portions were very small, the menu was uninspiring, the dessert menu was awful, and the service was marginal at best. Both food and drink were very expensive for what you get - I don't mind paying for great food, but this was priced for great and delivered only an OK experience. We left hungry, and given the two excellent and considerably less expensive Italian places close by we are unlikely to return.
