The one star is because of the cheese fries. The gyro's are horrible. If you need to cook the gyros after you've cut them off the spit, its usually not a good sign. Sorry, but you've lost me.

Had the looks of those divy hot dog stand secret gems (Gene & Judes etc) but the food did not deliver. The beef sandwiche was like dog food. I mean it was more like a paste or bottom of the pan sludge. I could not pick off a piece that resembled a shred of anything for the life of me. The 2 hot dog special with fries was better. Fixins were all there and the fries were plentiful and crispy. Place was kinda dead and the girl at the counter could have been more upbeat.

Love love love the food. The service is friendly, the prices are decent, and the customers are nice as well. I will totally go back!

For a hometown girl who lives a land devoid of beef sandwiches this trip home meant a culinary tour my my childhood comfort foods. For the first time in a decade I had a proper dog, pizza with good it. sausage & cut correctly for once, Dunkin Donuts and a beef. I was a Roma's devotee...sad to find it closed down. So I drove over here and I was not disappointed! The fries tasted perfectly salted and crisped, the beef was just as I imagined it would. I felt actual joy eating this thing. (I have never been into peppers on my dipped beef but by the next morning I felt compelled to polish off the leftover half of my southern-husband's pepper-filled beef sandwich because the craving in me was so great.) The perfect blend of Chgo. style fast food deliciousness.

I moved to Jefferson Park about 13 years ago. The day I moved into my house, my cousin Ellyn asked me if there was some good hot dog places around here. In a desperate attempt to look cool I almost instantaneously said yes. So we set forth on our journey not knowing where the hell I was going. I was a smart kid, I knew I was bound to hit something. There it was, Dukes, in all its glory. Much to my demise, my cousin did not have any money but that didn't stop us from having a feast. That's when I fell in love with Dukes. The decor of the place isn't what makes it good. Its the fantastic, perfectly cooked, made to order food. The 2 hot dog with french fries special is my advice for you to try. They sell all sorts of awesome things too. To name a few: Italian beef (dry for me), Italian sausage's and flavorful), The combo (beef and sausage...get it dry), Milkshakes, Chicken pita, fried mushrooms, and polish sausages. So since we have established about the food. The service is awesome. Cathy (Chick at the counter) has watched us all grow up and is super friendly. Every time I go without my dad, they almost never forget to send me with a "hello from Dukes". The food is cooked fast and with all the fixings you want. They have a parking lot, accessible from public transport(85a, or 85 going towards the terminal). Located right on the corner on Central and Elston, how convenient! I agree with the others... I wish Dukes was open later. Its worth going a little earlier for though. I am a life long customer. I tip my hat to you Dukes.

Small place. Really basic layout. But the food here rocks. Have eaten a skirt steak sandwhich here (my fav) and italian beef and a couple of hot dogs (not all in one sitting obviously). The employess are friendly and the owner (i believe) remembers me and starts on my order, which is nice. :)) But she is professional to everyone that comes in. Easy access as it is on the corner with a decent sized lot. The place is small though, but you know wh at they say about those small places.. :) I notice one of the pics shows outdoor seating...but I have never seen it. (shrug) However they are open until 10 if you have this urge for a quasi late night binge.

If I was rating just the Italian Beef I'd give them 5 stars. But overall its just 3. Everything else I've had there was just so-so, but the beefs are out of this world. I get mine completely soaked, and you should too.

Is it healthy? There are options to get sliced tomatoes and diced onions with your hotdog, but otherwise, no. Does it ooze sophistication? There are working burners and a cash register, but otherwise, no. Is it eco friendly? I do not know nor do I care. Are their hotdogs made from pigs that were killed humanely? Who gives a f_ck. cause I sure don't. It's blue-collar; it's greasy. The only fashion displayed is on weekends where hot rods & muscle cars hangout before cruising the streets. The food is comforting. The ladies at the order counter are nice. When the weather permits, you can sit outside enjoying your food, with cars parked around you. It's the atmosphere. It's Americana, and that's why it is good.

  • Pam D.

Duke's is still pretty dumpy looking, but the Italian Beef and fries are still good. Christopher tried the gyros and was underwhelmed. He said it was way too greasy. When he picked the sandwich up, stuff just ran off it. Gross. Stick with the beef sandwiches and the hot dogs and you will do alright.

  • Tom M.

Had a beef there for the first time in a long while. I hate to say it, but something has changed. It just ain't the same. Not terrible, but not great either. Too bad... :o(

As old and beat up looking as this place is... I like it, the food is good and the service is good as well. This definitely is the neighborhood dive but it's a good dive and worth checking out. Limited seating, burgers, hotdogs, gyros, Italian beef, pizza puffs... Basically all the food you'd expect at your neighborhood fast food place!

    (4)
  • Francis F.

I enjoyed the burger, fries and gyro...I tried the Italian beef but I don't see what all the fuss is about. Polish sausage and dogs are alright. I can see myself going back here

    (4)
  • Josan K.

The beef is just plain horrible here. Hot dogs, well, it's pretty hard to do that wrong. Maybe the beefs were better in the past but today it was horrible. Beef was stringy and tasteless. Grab a hot dog, stay away from the beef.

I grew up very near here and even worked at this place in high school under its previous names and owners, such as Gia's and Luke's. I go here every year when I'm visiting to recapture the old days and see if they ever put Missile Command back in, but alas, it is not there. What else is not here any more, at least since 2012, is the good food. Maybe the asian owners finally decided to cut serious corners, who knows, but I got my usual beef after weathering the bitch at the counter taking orders, only to notice that the beef sucked big-time. When I went to the bathroom, I noticed that they were using Sara Lee rolls for the beefs which is a JOKE! No more Gonella or other -real- bread company. Now it is Costco-crapola style bags of cheap Sara Lee bread that hold the "beef" together. I don't think so. Avoid this fallen icon like the plague for soon it will be another Chinese restaurant, and probably not a good one.

I recommend you try the beef. Yeah you, I'm talking to you! The sausage had too much of something in it and ruined it. The girl working the counter had a very bad attitude. Maybe she was having a bad day. I can't stand people with bad attitudes. I still gave this place 4 stars because I rate on the quality and flavor of the food. Some of my reviews on yelp are harsh, but that's only because if I ran a restaurant, it would be done right. I also can't stand dealing with businesses that are in the service business, but don't provide quality service to their customers. I want you to buy my product, my strategy is to piss you off. My Top 5 Italian Beef Sandwiches: 1. Mr. Beef & Pizza (Harlem and Irving) 2. Mr. Beef (Orleans Street in downtown Chicago, not related to Mr. Beef & Pizza from my knowledge.) 3. Johnnie's (Elmwood park, Arlington Heights) 4. Portillo's (Great flavor, but I don't like the aftertaste, something about it, has slowly been making it's way down my list) 5. Al's Beef (It keeps growing on me every time I have it. I did not like it the first time because it was different.) Consolation Prizes: These places all have above average beef sandwiches in my mind. I will list as many as I can remember. Duke's Beef, Coach's Corner, Bub's Subs, Chickie's, Joe Boston's, Frannie's, Pop's Italian Beef and Sausage, Tony's Deli, Nana's, Nottoli's, Tommy's, Buona, Capt'n Nemo's, Joseph's Elegante, Augustino's, Rammy's, Teddy Fabs, Gina's, Mr. A's. There are definitely places I have missed and places I have not been to yet. My list always changes, depending on if these places and my taste buds are having good days or bad days.

This used to be the place to get a great beef sandwich. It's been a few months since we got one from here so we decided to get a beef today. For $8.25 I got a beef sandwich and cheese fries.... I got home and was VERY UNHAPPY. The sandwich shrunk and was NASTY. I usually save half for later but this sandwich is so small now theres no saving for later. I guess after remodeling they raised the prices and shrunk the portions. I WILL NOT GO BACK EVER

What can I say it's a good dive-y type spot, it ain't no fancy place I tell you that but the food was okay. The guys working a bit on the "hood-take-no-attitude-but-sweet-tyep of men". I complained that my meal didn't come with a pop and well let's say my charming ways got me a free drink lol :) ha Overall too many locals constantly running in and out makes it for a lil less than pleasant dining experience but the food made up for it. Next time I may just order to- go ! lol

  • Errol B.

The woman at the register is a straight up bitch. She is very rude and ignorant. I don't ever want to go back because of the way I was treated the last couple times I was there. F this place.

  • Jack P.

Boy, is this place a dive. A dive with really good Italian Beef sandwiches. Fries are good, too. But it looks like a dump from the outside, and the inside looks like an old, neglected 1960's rec basement rec room. But I have to say, the Eye-talian beef with sweet peppers was tender, juicy and full of flavor, I made pretty fast work of that. While they have hot dog and cheeseburger combo's with fries and drink for $4.99, the Italian Beef combo runs closer to $9.00. And that's really the reason for the three stars. Just doesn't LOOK like a place to pay that much. So if they put even a little more effort into the appearance of the place, I'd be at 4 o 4.5, 'cause the food is so good. And can't beat the funny-talking, friendly counter guys. They were a treat. Head on down to Duke's for Eye-sore Eye-talian.

Went to duke's today based on reviews I found on yelp and might I say I'm glad I did. It's a hole in the wall dive hot dog spot, but their hot dogs were on point. And their fries although not freshly cut were still delicious! The chili they use on their chili dogs was spicy and had kick which was a welcomed surprise! I will definitely be heading back to Dukes whenever I get that chili dog crave =) Their italian beef was nothing to scoff at either, the guys at Dukes really really hooked it up with the beef! YUMMY!

  • Anne Marie J.

DROOOOOOOOL! The hot dogs are perfectly Chicago, the fries crispy and light, and the gardiniera fresh (the owners make it themselves!!!! AWESOME) We got a spread of food since there were so many of us and everything I ate was DELISH. My fave parts of Duke's were the sides: I couldn't stop eating the cheese fries with gardiniera on top, fried mushrooms, and the best corn dogs I've ever had (mini corn dogs are considered a side when you're inhaling a huge italian beef!) The cornmeal on the mini corn dogs are mildly sweet and cooked to perfection, pairing so well with that steamy hot dog in the middle. Who knew I could say so much about a corn dog?!?! This place has great food at such a great value. I love you, Duke's

Look past the fact that this place is a bit of a dump...ok, it's a real dump and if you go in you'll likely see a buch of dudes with mullets hangin' out there BUT listen up...the food is really, really yummy. The Italian Beef sandwiches are absolutely delish. Fine cut beef engulfed in what tastes like homeade gravy...that's right no Vienna Beef factory italian beef here...Duke's does their own baby!! They give you a more than ample portion and you even get some homemade hot gardiniere if you ask. Each time I've visited they make up a fresh batch of fries when you order and they come out piping hot. Don't miss Fridays...the Italian Beef special with fries is a good deal. The chocolate shakes are awfully tasty too. Staff is helpful and friendly. Give this joint a try...you won't be sorry.

  • Denise K.

I lived 2 blocks away from here and seldom ever went here unless I was desperate for food, did not want to cook and did not want to drive someplace. The beef is ok - nothing special. Fries were usualkly decent. Hot dogs - skinny, small tasteless. HOWEVER prices are very reasonable anf the staff was always friendly. Never tried the shakes or anything else. I have since moved but am back in the neighborhood a couple times a month but I would never make it a stop for food now.

    (2)
  • Hector L.

I would give this place zero stars if I could, how do you mess up a Vienna beef hot dog, not that hard well guess this place figured it out. How do you serve a cold hot dog on a stale bun. I have also never been served a hot dog for $2.50 and not get any fries. Let's not even talk about the cheeseburger it was inedible and I ended up throwing it away, I wouldn't even feed it to my dogs. I would rather someone tell me the place is closed than to serve me what they served me.

Forget hotdogs... delicious as they are, you know what's best at Dukes? The double file fish sandwich... oooh. No one mentioned but it's awesome; crisp, cheap, always fresh (as in freshly fried flash-frozen little brick that turns to heaven once golden brown) and giant. Prepare for a sore jaw trying to eat that thing. Well worth my 10 minute drive. Another thing we love there, is Italian beef and beef combo, as well as grilled chicken with cheese. Fries are good too, not too salty. Pop by if it's on your way; yes, it's a little grease spoon but the food rocks. Nice service too. The lady at the checkout laughs at me as I pace around, waiting for my fish sandwich and the joy I display once the order arrives. Nothing more to wish for when it comes to fast food.

THE BEST FRENCH FRIES, MILK SHAKES, AND ITALIAN BEEFS EVER!!!!!!! Me and my family have been going hear for years and its a hit. Very fast on their service. Its gotten a little high on their pricing but totally worth it. YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPOINTED IF YOUR LOOK FOR SOME GREAT FAST FOOD!!!! P.S. THIS RESTURANT SHOULD BE OPEN LATE, HOPE IT HAPPENS IN THE FUTURE

My friend has lived near by here for a long time and I have never been. The other day my sister stated that she would like a hamburger and since it was nearby I popped in to grab us some lunch. Eating with my eyes first I ordered two cheese burgers a hot dog (with everything, no ketcup) and two small orders of fries. Fries were good need more salt but were my favorite part of the meal. The hot dog was ok. My sister polished off her burger and when I started to eat mine it just had the funkiest taste. I couldn't figure it out and just had to stop eating it. Maybe it was something they cooked on the grill before or one of the veggies went bad but what ever it was it was gross. Since I don't eat that much fast food I'm going to pass on this place from now on. The people behind the counter were very nice and patient since I had to stare at the menu for 5 minutes before I ordered exactly what I knew I wanted before I came in. Still I think I'll check out one of the other local joints. Oh and there out door seating is right next to their dumpsters so I would think twice about there outdoor seating.

  • Justin M.

Double dogs are the shiz! Make sure you stop by here when going to the Edgebrook Golf Course. Tell the guys behind the counter Justin sent ya!* * - you will get a dirty look, and they will charge you extra for your fries

  • Stephanie T.

I don't know why this place gets good reviews at all. I went there twice and the food was bad both times. I thought I could give it another shot after the first time I went there. I ordered a rib sandwich. The patty was dry and not heated all the way and the fries were terrible. I don't know if it was just me but they were TERRIBLE and rock hard. Second time I went there I ordered a sandwich. It was still BAD! Don't think I'd ever go there again.

  • Carlos M.

This place is the other hot dog spot that i would go eat.. The price of the hot dogs are the best with fries included and a drink... and you can get cheese on the side to dip your fries in... After 10 years coming back to Chicago, this is one of the must go to places for a hot dog.. and will be a must go place when i come back in the winter... Yeah the place looks old but the taste has no reflection on how the place looks like..

  • Bonnie G.

Great food for cheap price! You can not go wrong with the 3.99 hot dog special that comes with 2 dogs and an order of fries. Beefs are great, double cheeseburger is amazing and the philly cheesesteak is pretty good too.

    (4)
  • JJ S.

I live just a few blocks from this place, and the burgers are huge and tasty and they are by far the best french fries I have had in the city of Chicago. If you want healthy, avoid it, but if want tasty....grab it!

    (4)
  • Chris S.

My absolute favorite Italian beef sandwich on the north side. It's shaved super thin, and it practically melts in your mouth. The winning combination for me is dipped with mozzarella and sweet peppers. Also, I'm a huge fan of their fries. I don't know what the secret is, but they're delicious, even though they're frozen. The hot dog special is great, although the hot dogs are pretty standard. The lack of a poppy seed bun really hurts.

    (5)
  • David P.

The place is the dive of all dives. I felt downright dirty as soon as I entered the dungeon-like atmosphere. The hot dog wasn't bad but the fries were bland. I don't get wy this place gets good reviews.

Great place for a Beef if you are up in this area. I have been going to Duke's for 10 years or so. I try and limit my Beef sammich intake, but when the mood hits Duke's hits the spot.

  • James C.

This place is so random. They have this huge parking lot but then you walk in and it has like 4 tables to sit. I went during lunch and it was a little crowded... seems like a lot of locals come here for lunch break. The food is typical of a Chicago burger/hot dog joint. They have a great deal... I think it was 2 hot dogs and fries for 4 bucks. One item on their menu that seems to be overlooked is their cheesy italian beef. They load you up with lots of beef, peppers, and the cheese.... oh the cheese. I've had my share of italian beef in chicago and this is up there. I'd probably come here more often if it was closer.

  • Michael M.

I grew up only a few blocks from Duke's. It is one of those quintessential Chicago hole in the wall dives. Nothing beats an Italian beef sandwich with peppers and a bag of fries (the kind that soak the bag). Also, half the fun of going is just walking in, standing there, and smelling those delicious sandwiches cooking. You can't beat the prices either. Everything is pretty cheap and you get a lot of food for your buck.

    (4)
  • Marian L.

Duke's has been around even before I was born! This place is family-owned and always packed during lunch hours! They are best known for their Italian beefs...and their fries are really the best I've tasted! They have GREAT prices: $2.99 for 2 hot dogs and a small fry! Some places charge $7+ for the same amount of food! Service is lightning-quick, as well. After a few visits they know you by name and even your usual order! Friendly place with great fast food - can't beat that!

    (5)
  • Virginia T.

Duke's is a typical Chicago neighborhood hot dog joint. They do, however, have EXCELLENT beef sandwiches. I think the fries are so-so, but my brother-in-law swears they are the best even though they are not fresh-cut. The decor is nothing special, but the employees are friendly. It's a great value for what you get and worth checking out for sure.

    (4)
  • Bob B.

Some of the best Italian beef around. The size of the sandwich is enormous!! The Italian Sausage is superb. The place could use a major makeover though. Then it would be so crowded we'd never get in!! Fastest fast food place on the planet. Unless you ordered a burger. Good job Duke's.

    (4)
  • B. L.

Famous for their Italian beef and sausage. They also have hot dogs, hamburgers, chilli, etc. Make sure you get an out of this world beef with sweet peppers. They have a few tables, but this is mostly a to -go kind of place where those that eat & live hearty will not be disappointed. Where's the beef? Right here, my friends!

    (4)
  • John S.

Another 3 star dog stand (and that's ok). 2 dogs and a fry for 2.99. You cannot do better unless you hit Frank n' Fries on Golf, but who wants to drive all that way. Only complaint as a hot dog purist is the bun. No poppy seed. Beyond that I love this place, good service, good food. Fries are bagged not hand cut, but for a local place, I would probably pick this over toot's if it was during the day. Outstanding value.
