I'm really glad that almost everyone here has posted all of the pictures that you'll need of Dinkel's doughnuts. Let's be honest, they know EXACTLY what they are doing making doughnuts here. Things to try: Chocolate Cake Doughnut - best in the city Old Fashioned - If you like a cakey old fashioned this one is for you Apple Fritter - A pretty solid Fritter - only available sometimes - keep an eye out for them Things to consider: Things sell out quickly on Saturday/Sunday's - if you're not there before 8/9 you're likely out of luck on some of the more niche doughnuts. Don't worry, they almost always have chocolate cake doughnuts available!

Five generations of my family have been delighted by this Chicago legend. FIVE !!! The recipes are beautifully crafted with premium ingredients. Absolutely delicious. Whatever you do, whatever you buy, DO NOT LEAVE without a chocolate cake donut! (Or six) This is the single best chocolate donut in Chicago. THE BEST I can't get them out of my mind. They're haunting me.

HANDS DOWN BEST BAKERY OF CHICAGO! We get birthday cakes for our families here ALL the time. Their donuts is amazing...basically everything they make is amazing. It's a pregnant lady's dream come true when you walk in here :)

Love their butter cookies and I'm usually not a cookie person! Their cakes are too rich for my taste but bf goes gaga for them and demands them for every birthday (over my homemade ones, pfff) They just recently started to offer made-to-order sandwiches. It took a while as there was only one person making sandwiches, but it was worth the wait: crusty bread with fresh ingredients. Even the chips were good too!

I use to come here 10yrs ago, came here recently and love what they have done to this place. The build out is great and the fact that they made there menu more lunch friendly and not just pastries is excellent!

Five stars for the products (delicious, delicious, delicious) but 3 stars for the service. Still worth going to if you need a cake or some treats - their birthday cakes are MILES above even the finest grocery store offering, and relatively inexpensive - but come during an off-time (midday on a weekday, for example) to avoid crowds and frazzled employees.

Don't believe the cake hype. I went to a wedding cake tasting here years ago and what a disappointment. I went to the counter to let the employee know I was there only to have her go to the back and return with a silver pizza tray with some cake slices. She handed the tray to me and told me to sit wherever there was an empty table. So I took the tray, found a table, and sat, and sat, and sat. No one came over, no one checked on me, nothing. Needless to say, I got up and left after half an hour. Maybe this place is good for donuts but don't expect any kind of service, care or attention.

Dinkel's is a bakery. Dinkel's is a cafe. Dinkel's is a donut shop. No, this place isn't schizophrenic. It knows what it is--and it's the stuff dreams are made of. The breakfast and lunch menus are limited, but these sandwiches taste great, fill you up, and are just a notch above fast food prices despite being far above fast food quality. When dining in, you can sit along a window-facing counter and people watch or cozy up to the fireplace. Fresh flowers sit atop the tables, but things are still very casual, making it a great date spot. As a bakery, you can get just about anything you'd typically find at a bakery: bread loaves, cakes, brownies, cookies, etcetera. The seasonal items are in demand, so if you want heart-shaped sugar cookies or paczki, order ahead! Stopping in unexpectedly is fine if you just want a chocolate donut or a cherry Danish. Don't miss the excellent hot cocoa!

Old school bakery at it's best! These type of bakeries have been vanishing from Chicago for some time now and I am thrilled that Dinkel's is still here and better then ever! All of there bake goods are delicious but I can't walk by without stopping in for an old fashion chocolate doughnut! They have a great fresh sandwich shop that is perfect for lunch.

Dinkel's is an awesome bakery that's been around since 1922....and it's only taken me close to 100 years to swing by. On yet another snowy day, my roommates and I made a quick trip over here and thank god we did because we were so full and happy afterwards. We shared an assortment of sandwiches, donuts, and paczkis which are only made around the time of Fat Tuesday each year. Everything was very reasonably priced too. Favorites: - Chocolate covered paczki with custard filling - Raspberry lemon paczki - Chocolate donut - Spinach-artichoke melt sandwich (just extra delicious) - The Woolworth sandwich (the tomato mayo is downright amazing but wish there were more apple slices!) The sandwiches above are pretty much a 5/5. There's a perfect panini char on the bread, yet it isn't too hard to bite into. The sandwiches are packed with filling on the inside, with just the right about of mayo, and altogether not oily at all! I felt pretty healthy eating it. The donuts/paczkis are a 4/5 mostly because the glaze is slightly too sturdy and the cake wasn't as light as what I normally like. Still, super good and very worth the trip to pick up a few!

We got Dave Grohl's chocolate donut... Every Friday night we grab the kids and go on some kind of adventure. Tonight was our city trip adventure, because my hubby needed guitar strings from Chicago Music Exchange across the street. As always, our city trips are never complete without a stop to Dinkel's Bakery for chocolate donuts. It was 10 minutes to closing, so we ran in hoping they would have some left (because we promised our kids their long trip in would include Dinkel's!). When we asked about the chocolate donuts, our new favorite baker (former Yelp Elite I might add) behind the counter said she had one chocolate donut left, but she was saving it for Dave Grohl because he was expected to stop in. However, she assumed he couldn't make it, went to the back, and brought it out for us and put it in a bag for our kiddos. Yep, the last chocolate donut! And, it was meant for Dave Grohl who is performing tonight in the city. Dinkel's is a tradition for our family, and their chocolate donuts are thick cake donuts with a thick chocolate frosting that's just right and not too gooey. Of course we left with more than just the famous chocolate donut, and we now have a great tasting donut along with a fun story to tell all our friends. Sorry, Dave, if you ended up stopping by. Thanks for the donut!

I'm sort of torn in Dinkel's as I've had great experiences here as well as ok experiences. I'm more like a 3.5/5 but I'm rounding up. I've ordered plenty of donuts and other goodies from Dinkel's for breakfast which are usually really delicious. I've had a few items that were dryer than I wanted, but overall, I'd say they're pretty good and tasty. Not very inventive - just traditional donuts and muffins, etc. We've had an issue before when Dinkel's was supposed to be open but they either changed hours or closed early....not sure if this was just a one time occurrence but I'd say you really want to show up early in the morning to be able to ensure your order is as you want it. Today, we tried breakfast sandwiches which were pretty good. Most of the sandwiches are really the same ones with slight differences... one has bacon, the next one is the same without bacon. However, they were fresh, made directly for us and the person making them even came out to confirm our order. All in all, pretty good. So, I wouldn't say anything is overwhelmingly amazing (at least not yet), but I'm definitely going to be back.

A friend of mine brought me here as we were in the mood for some good Italian sweets. I have to tell you, I was blown away at the selection of goodies. I was so excited about their selection that I basically bought one of everything - try a dozen of assorted cookies and donuts. I definitely recommend this place and I will be back again - stay tuned!

  • JaeMin K.

Their donuts are super yummy!!! I've tried their cinnamon, old-fashioned, chocolate glazed, chocolate long john's, red velvet, and walnut maple syrup and they are all so freaking delicious. They are not your average donuts and taste more like cake-donuts because of their texture (and this makes them awesome). Just make sure to go earlier in the day, or else they might all be sold out by the time you get there!

    (5)
  • Andrea H.

Dinkel's delivers classic old fashioned donuts, always fresh and delicious! They have a variety of cakes and other sweets as well; the ones I've tried were quite good! Pastries may cost a little more than other places, but the quality is consistent. Bonus: their coffee is pretty great too!

  • Janis W.

The man who makes the sandwiches is so passive aggressive I won't get a sandwich from there anymore. But the bakery goods are fine and it's the only place in the neighborhood, so I recommend it for that. Also stars for being able to remain in business all these years. All the other longtime neighborhood businesses have had to close.

Dinkels Bakery. Family has been going there for many years and I typically love their goodies. Recently ran by on a Saturday to pick up a homestyle cake which is on special on Saturday. I was in a hurry to get to a birthday party. She rang me up and I left without getting my receipt. After driving a bit I realized my change wasn't correct and that she didn't charge me the sale price. I called them from the road to alert them as I knew who rung me up. She denied doing it and I was told without my receipt there was nothing that could be done. Come on, why in the world would I take the time to contact you over a few bucks and be lying? I was told the girls are properly trained, yeah right! Haven't been back since. It's a shame that sometimes they have the worst customer service. Lesson learned always save the receipt too!

Thursday, July 30th, 2015 at 10:40am - not a good experience. We walk in to an empty Dinkel's (no other customers) and we see about 5 employees standing behind the counter talking to one another. They look at us as we head to the other side of thee counter to look at donuts and they don't say hello or respond. We stand by the counter for almost 10 minutes and no one responds. Finally I continue to look at the employees as they're talking, and one decides to come over. Very lazy. Uninterested. The donuts end up costing almost $2 each, and they don't taste like anything special. In fact, they are a bit too dense compared to Donut Vault and Stan's Donuts. I do not recommend coming here. Yes, I've heard it's a historical monument and a fixture in the neighborhood. I don't care. The donuts are not on par with other bakeries in Chicago, and the employees are not happy. Steer clear.

So I have returned here a few times now because I finally tried their most delicious cookie and I am hooked! Its the chocolate butter cookie and they sell them in boxes for only $7.50! The atmosphere has definitely improved since my first visit as well. It's much warmer and inviting now. Aside from that I think this place takes the award for baking one of my favorite chocolate chip cookie ever. Yum.

Loveliest owners and managers. Kind, considerate, and inclusive. They will make you feel at home. Further, they have the most incredible stollen I have ever had in my entire life. Paczki Day was an blast (best paczki around), and the rest of their fare is simply marvelous. Oh -- and their sandwiches are pure rock and roll (just ask the musicians who come over from Chicago Music Exchange). I have skipped Starbuck's for nearly an entire year, just so I could purchase the coffee Dinkel serves, and to show my support for this old-time bakery -- this Chicago staple. Although I am moving far away, I will be ordering the stollen, as Dinkel's now delivers all over the place. Go to Dinkel's and leave well-fed, satisfied, and purely happy. Thank you, Dinkel's.

Dinkel's has been my favorite bakery since I moved to the north side. It was also my first job lol. The chocolate cake and buttercream are delicious! Prices have gone up through the years of course but the quality is worth it. They have a nice seating area as well. You won't be disappointed!

The sandwich was wonderful and the cupcakes were to DIE for!! Must also try the butter chocolate chip cookies! Prepare for a little bit of a wait on busy days? But it's worth it! I want to try EVERYTHING!

This place has not failed me on my several last minute decisions to order cakes for delivery. I ordered a cake recently for Nurses' Week and everyone loved it. It was a chocolate with white chocolate mousse. They deliver to businesses and the fee was only $16.

I'm deducting three stars because of service. Today I purchased a quarter sheet yellow cake and requested they write a birthday message on it. I placed my order, gave them my phone number, paid, and was told to come back within 30 minutes to an hour. I came back 45 minutes later and the icing hadn't been done because the person who filled out my order form didn't ask me what color I wanted. They quickly filled my order and I was on my way, but I essentially waited 45 minutes for nothing. Why didn't I get a phone call if they didn't know what color? Why did I have to wait that long for them to write a few words? Very irritated.

Stopped by this place for the first time on a Sunday morning. There were about 10-12 people in the bakery. We waited for about 10 mins before we realized you needed a number to get served. The way we found out was the guy in front of us was waiting longer and they wouldn't serve him because he didn't realize (like us) that you needed a number. We found the number dispensing machine hid over in the corner. No sign, anywhere...we weren't the only ones confused by their system. I saw many others perplexed by this set-up. We left. No worries though, the great thing about living in the city is that you can pretty much find an alternative within a block or 2. I see this often, many businesses are run poorly. Sure this business knows how to make doughnuts, but they seem to lack basic customer service knowledge (hint: Business 101). Ba bye!

This is definitely my favorite bakery in Chicago. It is very inexpensive and has a great selection. Bread based pastries are amazing (Danishes, cinnamon/pecan rolls, doughnuts, etc). Tiramisu and cannolis are also really good. Breakfast sandwiches are great and serves on amazing bread. Haven't had many of the cake type products because cake is so typical and boring... however, they do look great. Any bad reviews on here are probably from people looking for pretty cupcakes and don't appreciate what a real bakery is all about. GO TO DINKEL'S! GET AN AMAZING DANISH THAT COSTS LESS THAT 2 DOLLARS, GREAT COFFEE AND SIT BY THE FIREPLACE!

I always get my breakfast here on my way to work. 1 doughnut and 1 orange Juice. Today I was told They have a $5.00 minimum to use debit cards and that I must pay cash. I said I don't carry cash on me. So apparently this bakery is doing so well in business they are able to TURN DOWN CUSTOMERS because they don't carry cash! I will walk past dunkin doughnuts on my way to work from now on, at least there I will never be told I can't by anything unless I pay with cash!

Busy place on a Saturday morning!! As soon as you get in that door, grab a number! I bought a pecan strudel bread and two breakfast sandwiches. The breakfast sandwiches took forever!!! The woman who was making them was very apologetic about the wait. She said they normally have 3 people making them but it was just her this morning. Frustrating but I appreciated her telling me that. The bread was yummy. I would definitely buy it again. The sandwiches (Dinkels Day) were on the butter roll and had ehgs, bacon and swiss cheese. It was very good. There were a bunch of sandwiches that I would love to try next time. I also regret not buying a donut. I will definitely do that next time.

Last minute cake shopping for my daughters 13th birthday. walked in. place was pretty busy in a sunday afternoon. my options were limited to either vanilla or chocolate frosted cake(for the size i needed) i chose the vanilla. the girl then dressed it up with her skillful writing and the cake looked like it was worth a good $50+ dollars which it tasted good enough to be worth that much. it came out to $22 dollars! great deal. great service. will def. start using them again.

Really.. as good as it gets for bakeries. They have everything you can think of and make everything from scratch. They do amazing special occasion cakes.. but really.. you can come here for the everyday things as well. Their old fashioned donut is no joke. Its ridiculously good for just being a plain, glazed donut. They also have coffee. They now have sandwiches as well and a cafe area. I haven't tried those yet. Tip: This is the place in Chicago to buy your Paczki's for Paczki day. MAKE SURE TO ORDER AHEAD or expect an hour wait. They are THE BEST Ive had. I think they may have a bunch of Polish grandmas locked up in the back making them.. someone may want to investigate that lol.

Great spot to sit and have a pastry and coffee(or your hot drink of choice). I like the cozy decor in the dining area and the staff is really nice and helpful. I had roasted vegetable soup, a turkey panini , an old fashioned donut and a hot chocolate. It was all quite tasty. The prices are quite reasonable as well. Check it out

I haven't been to Dinkel's since 2004 and thought I'd grab a frosted sugar cookie since I was in the neighborhood. Sadly my $3.98 Giraffe cookie was HARD, virtually tasteless & tore up my gums after a couple bites :( His headless body is now in my trash :( Looked cute though.

Went there this morning to pick up a few donuts as I passed by. Sadly, because I got there a little late, there wasn't a huge selection, but enough to satisfy my sugar tooth. Short wait and I was waited on by a really nice guy named Ben. He was very patient with me as I drooled over these tasty morsels. After quickly getting my order together and paying, I asked him where his tip cup was. He said they didn't have one! He was so professional and pleasant to deal with, I wanted him to have a little something for himself. Hey Dinkel's owner.... you have great employees there, like Ben. Let them put up a tip jar for a job well done. Everyone at my office loved the donuts. I don't go here much, but I will frequent more because of my service today and there better be a tip jar there!

My family and I have been going to Dinkel's for ever. They arguably have the best damned chocolate donut in the State of Illinois but a close runner up (for me at least) is the sour cream donut. I've had them at many places but Dinkel's is the best. They recently added a lunch cafe that we have not tried yet but it's on our list of things to do. One thing I'm not crazy about at Dinkel's is their coffee...but there's a Starbucks right across the street.

Dinkel's, Dinkel's, Dinkel's. What a great name. I might have to get a cat just to name it Dinkel. I'm intrigued by many aspects of the food world - two involve cult followings and institutions. Dinkel's is a Chicago institution, around since 1922, so I had to check it out. To be clear, I went to check out the doughnuts because they continuously pop up on "Chicago's best of" lists. Honestly, I would only give the doughnuts 3 stars, but after browsing around it's clear that there are many reasons why this bakery has lasted nearly a century. The cakes, cookies and pies look amazing! The staff is super nice and the remodel, with the addition of the fireplace, makes it roomy and comfortable. As for the doughnuts. I'm perplexed. On the one hand they don't hold a candle to the artisan doughnut masters like Doughnut Vault and Firecakes, or even Glazed & Infused and Do-rite, but there's something basic, simple and tasteful about them. I didn't care for the chocolate glazed cake doughnut because the chocolate coating was so intense and so heavy (see photo). The old fashioned was good and if I'm in the hood I would probably get it again, but I won't go out of my way for it. The coffee is some of the best I have had in Chicago. If I ever need a cake made, I will call Dinkels. If I need good old fashion cherry pie that's not too fancy for my Dad, then I will call Dinkels. And if I need a big old plate of holiday cookies, then I'm off to Dinkels. As for the doughnuts, I will stick to my other Chi faves.

Ever since discovering Dinkel's, my weekend mornings haven't been the same. I think I am addicted to their old fashioned AND chocolate cake donuts, they're unreal. Recently, I discovered their lunch sandwiches, which are also fabulous. The Goldblatt's artichoke melt is my favorite (add bacon - fresh from the Paulina Meat Market - if you're a meat eater). The place is always fast and I've never tried a bakery item I didn't like. Love you Dinkel's, see ya this weekend.

Fantastic sandwiches from the Cafe! Fantastic doughnuts! The old fashioneds are amazing as are the sprinkles, chocolate fudge, and so many more... On Saturday's they offer a bacon maple doughnut that is worth the trip alone. The only lackluster items I have had at Dinkel's are their cupcakes. They tend to be a little dry and not as much flavor as their other items. But if classic tasting doughnuts is what you are hangry for - Dinkel's is the best.

  • Andrew B.

A pretty good neighborhood bakery! Be sure, there are better cakes, pastries and donuts elsewhere, but Dinkels bakes then all in one place and does a bang up job. Coffee and a great local business, old timey feel make this a must stop if you live in the neighborhood. I tired the chocolate donut everyone raves about, and found it more "meh" and dry. Maybe i got an off batch? But my favorite: Old fashioned sour cream donut tastes like donuts tasted when I was little.

I am down on Dinkel's. After years and years of hearing how great it is I popped in since we were parked nearby. The service was fine. She was a little distracted and sassy but I didn't mind. I should have been suspicious of the BOGO cupcake deal. I got 2 of the filled ones that look like flowers. My boyfriend got a slice of mint chocolate cream pie. I thought it was pretty good. Not too minty or rich. The cupcakes, however, were the worst I've ever had. If I lived close I'd return them. They were so dry that when you try to peel the wrapper off a lot of the cake stuck to the side and the entire bottom of the cake remained. I had one with white chocolate filling that I could pop out and it remained intact leaving a perfect circle in the cake. I ate some of the frosting. The other cupcake was raspberry filled. It was also incredibly dry but the frosting had no flavor. The center was raspberry jam. Given the plethora of bakeries I won't be back. Jewel Osco has them beat!

A cute, old-school neighborhood bakery that we frequent often for solid, no-frills donuts and tasty breakfast sandwiches. Before going, find your zen: they are frustratingly inefficient and painfully slow. Like, the slowest ever. Tortoise walking through molasses slow. You can watch fellow patrons age before your eyes. They seem to think it's charming, but it's honestly what keeps me from being a more frequent customer.

The staff is always friendly. Their sandwiches are out of this world. I can't walk past here without going in and ordering one. I have yet to try their sweets, but everything looks delicious.

The line moved quickly at Dinkel's on Fat Tuesday, thanks to having two separate lines: one line for pre-orders, and one line for counter service. Their ordering process is also very easy. There is a form on their website, and you can call, fax, or e-mail your order. I chose to pre-order, since I'd heard that lines for paczki on Fat Tuesday can get a little crazy. It smells great in here, but the pre-order line had a sign that clearly read, "NO ADD-ONS," which is probably for the better since I also had an order to pick up at another bakery. The must-try flavors are the Parisian Lemon, Raspberry Lemon, and the White Fudge with Coconut and Pineapple. The Parisian Lemon had a creamy, custard-like filling instead of a sugary jelly, and the dough was really good. The dough had a crisp, almost buttery flavor similar to some of the best doughnuts I've tried. The dough kept for several days without drying out. I'm not totally in love with Dinkel's though. Compared to other bakeries, the flavor variety for paczki is a lot smaller, and parking in the area was a little tough even on a Tuesday in the early afternoon. I really liked everything I got here, but none of the flavors are something I'd make a trip from the suburbs for again. I would stop in for doughnuts if I were in the neighborhood though.

Amazing! I just happened to stop in and decided to order a sandwich. The BLT sandwich had a good portion of yummy bacon and yummy toppings. I'll be going back to try some different ones and some of their salads. One other thing the guy who was working the sandwich counter was great. We BS'd until my sandwich was ready-he truly knows the meaning of great customer service! Go order a sandwich and a pastry:)

I tear up every time I think about how far I live from Dinkels. I used to buy it for people to attempt to buy their friendship. Their cinnamon roll is the best I have ever had. It is very buttery, has generous amounts of cinnamon and brown sugar, and is very large. Far better than Ann Sathers. My mom used to order them by the box to take home to Michigan when I lived by Dinkels.

On my quest to discover new and exciting places near my work, I came across a place that was anything but new: Dinkel's Bakery. Let's just say I wish I had known about them sooner. I stopped by for lunch and was taken back by the selection and variety. I ordered the Woolworth sandwich (turkey, bacon, apple slices, cheddar, onions and sundried mayo on their sourdough) and opted to get a cinnamon roll and cup of coffee while I was waiting for my order. For starters, the cinnamon roll was very good -- not too sweet and overbearing with the icing, allowing a lot of cinnamon flavor to come through. And the sandwich was sinful! Plus, the Viennese coffee (from the Coffee and Tea Exchange) was an excellent brew to compliment my food. And while I was browsing Dinkel's, I came across what could be my latest obsession: stollen. Who knew fruit cake could actually be delicious?! The stollen here is incredible and I couldn't stop eating the samples while I was waiting in line to place my order. I will definitely be back soon to buy one to share with my family over the holidays. They also had a brownie sample that was quite tasty. The staff here is incredibly nice, especially the guy making my sandwich. A big shout out to him! I can definitely see why Dinkel's has lasted so long and remained a treasured establishment in Chicago. I will be back.

I have had Dinkels a few times. I've had their cake and donuts for special occasions. Everytime I tried their treats, I have enjoyed every bite. The only time I did not enjoy one of their donuts was at my friends birthday celebration at school. He had brought in donuts for the class and we chose ours.I chose a chocolate donut. My first few bites were good until I realized that it wasn't baked fully. I got a mouth full of unsatisfying dough. That was only bad experience with them. I will be back soon! Age -12

Best apple fritter in the city. My first stop on my cheat day! Boston creams are equally as yummy. A non greasy donut is the best donut. No frills needed here because it's simply the best. Thank you Dinkle's for starting my weekend right, every week!

Visiting Chicago with a friend and stumbled onto Dinkel's purely by accident. What luck! So many things to chose from but decided on carrot torte and chocolate cupcake. YUM. Very spacious with nice seating to the side.

So, today is PÄ…czki Day and after being sorely disappointed with Delightful Pastries last year, a friend and I did some more research and decided to try Dinkel's this year. Notes: Better than Delightful Pastries, in my opinion, because they are actually filled doughnuts and not just "doughnut sandwiches" as I like the call the sliced version that seems to be popular here in Chicago. Great selection of flavors - traditional and not-so traditional. I tried half a paczki as-is and the rest (I got two total - Raspberry and Apple), I put in the microwave for 15-20 seconds = exponentially better! Seriously, melts in your mouth if you reheat them gently! No more than 20 seconds! Lastly, as someone who spent two years working at the famous Josef's Bakery in Grosse Pointe, MI and has thus, experienced working holidays like Paczki Day, Easter and especially Christmas, the service was incredible slow. We arrived at 7am and there was no clear direction that there were two lines - one for pre-orders and one for day-of orders. There were only three girls working behind the counter and about 80+ people in line. It took a full hour and five minutes for us to get to the front of the line. That never happened when I was in the industry. That wasn't allowed to happen. All in all, it was a better experience than last year, but nothing beats Hamtramck. I expected better of Chicago Polaks but I guess there are some things we have them beat at!

Live right next to this place, so I go here about 2-3 times per week. Pros -great pastries, donuts, cakes, and new sandwiches (both regular and breakfast) -specialty items all the time and literally everything you order there will be very good -reasonable priced for the quality of food you are getting there Cons -packed on weekends with tons of little kids Line will be at least 15 mins on an average weekend morning -understaffed at times which directly cause waits Will continue to come back but try my best to avoid at all costs on weekends

Driving down Lincoln trying to get to lunch and stumbled across this place. I told my husband to pull over so I could jump out and see what they had to over. (I'm a sucker for a good bakery) I only had a hot 2 minutes to make my choices and get out. I got a key lime pie, a cupcake, donut and slice of cheesecake. All were very good and worth stopping traffic. My husband and I give the key lime pie four thumbs up as it was absolutlely DELISH!

The Goldblatt's Spinach Artichoke Melt was superb! Service was great. Everyone working during our visit was in a pre-Thanksgiving festive mood. It was delightful! I had a chocolate donut. It was quite good considering I am not much of a donut fan. Thanks to the awesome ladies at Eye Spy for pointing us to Dinkel's.

We have loved Dinkels for years. We special ordered a cake for our fathers 84th birthday. We arrived to pick it up (on the way to the party) and they didn't have the order. They saw that we had ordered it but it couldn't be found and didn't know why it wasn't made. They then said I could choose a pre-made cake but didn't give any consideration on the price (for two cakes we settled for). The flavors they had were not great. A manager was going to call but didn't. We called 4 times to speak to the general manager but they were never there and we were told that he would call me back. That never happened. Perhaps they are so popular that they don't need to care about customer service. We are done with them.

I've ordered a couple cakes here for my husband and for my sister, and they have never failed! You can custom order with any kind of design on top (we had ordered a buttercream cake with custard filling and a motorcycle design on top; I also ordered one for my sister with a Dr. Who TARDIS on top). They also made wedding cookies for our wedding that they delivered to The Sofitel for an extra charge. They are creative with wonderfully fresh and delicious pastries can I highly recommend them. My only drawback was there was some difficulty in the back and forth communication for the wedding cookies, as there was some lag in between each email but I understand they are busy; it was just difficult for me since I was on a time crunch for the wedding and just wanted to find out if they had the time to make the wedding cookies within our time needs (hence the 4 stars), but I will certainly be coming back here in the future!

Love their baked goods (especially the donuts!)! This is a must-go spot when our in-laws and friends visit. You have to try the chocolate glaze and coconut donuts. 4 stars only because sometimes their service isn't the best (I often feel that the girls are rushing me or can be rude or not as friendly as I'd expect).

All I can say is, YUM! I think they have the best donuts than any other bakery. Everything is consistently fresh and delicious.

Best bakery ever! I am leaving Chicago & I am really going to miss ordering desserts from here. My whole family orders for every occasion from this place. So do a lot of my friends and their family. Their cakes are to die for. Well worth the price. I had a chocolate cake with fresh raspberry center made and his entire team at work devoured it in record time!

Cakes are top-notch. Better than Swedish, Lutz, or what you'd find at Jewel or Mariano's. The buttercream frosting is the difference. Dinkel's just nails that frosting with a really balanced mix of sweet and creamy. It's nice and hard, too. Some buttercreams are gooey and sticky, but not theirs. Well done. Prices are more than fair as well. One word of warning: expect to wait. Maybe if you go during off hours you can stroll right up to the counter, but on the weekend, take a number (can be hard to spot the "take a number" machine) and play the waiting game. Yes, I know, the waiting game sucks, and you'd prefer to play Hungry Hungry Hippos. Nonetheless, the wait is worth it. Don't forget to feed the meter.

Items selected: Rum Tart - Meringue, Rum Infused Cocoa Buttercream, Nuts Red Velvet Cupcake Carrot Cake Cupcake Apple Fritter Sourcream Donut Caramel Nut Raised and Glazed Moving from modern to classic the second stop on our morning tour was at iconic Dinkel's Bakery, a Chicago institution since 1922 featuring old world recipe cakes, cookies, donuts, and more amidst cozy confines on Lincoln Avenue. Large in size and also in selection it was just prior to 7:45am when we arrived and with parking easily allocated we entered the shop along with a small trickle of traffic to peruse the options, clearly an affronting a rather unpleasant clerk as we inquired about the unmarked donuts behind the counter only to later see karma bite back when she spilled my aunt's (admittedly dreadful and probably better off spilled down a drain) hot chocolate all over the pastry case and counter while packaging our order. Ordering lightly as we'd already indulged in Enoch's Donuts earlier and taking our choices to the café next door it was with mixed results that we sampled the selections, the sour cream donut a warm, crisp, and textbook rendition while the both the yeasted option and the fritter were bready and boring, the later nothing like a fritter but rather a sort of cinnamon pull-apart nearly devoid of fruit. Moving next to the cakes, both the red velvet and carrot were light and flavorful if not particularly memorable but intentionally saving what I anticipated to be the best for last it was in the Rum Tart that Dinkel's redeemed itself as the meringue remained crisp between layers of boozy buttercream while toasty, crushed walnuts and pecans proved an admirable foil to the sweetness.

I've been going here for years and I love getting the cheese danish, cheese bear claws, and donuts. When I walked in yesterday evening, I received negative vibes from the younger lady on my order, in a rude tone of voice. The customer service was horrible for a well known bakery like this. I purchased a hot chocolate and after the young lady made me a small, it had a strange burnt after taste. It did not taste like hot chocolate. I told my coworker about it she said they could have used dark chocolate, but it tastes like burnt water and smells like sewage water.

got sandwiches?... yes and they outshine their baked goods IMO. living in the area on and off for years, i've never been tempted to just walk into dinkel's on a whim - and that is a lot coming from ms. sweet tooth. their overpriced frosted sugar cookies were the only thing that excited me until they added sandwiches. when i was a SAHM this was a once a week treat for me to get the vegetarian sandwich with spinach, artichoke and avocado and baked for more goodness. i love a good sandwich and a good vegi sandwich which has more than just "filler" in it (i.e. lettuce, tomato and cheese) is hard to come by.

It's "OK". I'm not in love with Dinkel's, but it's not horrible. When fall weather kicked in we needed some apple cider doughnuts. Where does everyone recommend for apple cider doughnuts in Chicago? Dinkel's. So, I wake up early one Sunday to go get some, get there about 45 after they open and I'm told "we're sold out". Hhhmmm, ok, fine. I picked up a couple other tasty pastries so I wasn't coming home empty handed. They were all really good. They weren't good enough to seek out if they weren't in my path though. A week or two later I thought I'd try again for some cider doughnuts. I called just after they opened (I don't remember what day of the week it was) and asked if they had any, I was told "We only have them on Wednesday and Saturday". So, um, when I showed up on a Sunday and was told they had sold out I was lied to? Not cool. I really don't appreciate being lied to, but lying to me about fried pastry is just not acceptable on any level. Also, they do get really busy, understandably on weekend mornings, and the staff can't seem to keep up. I don't mind taking a number and waiting my turn to order, but by the time I order the self serve coffee better be full. Especially after I watch 4 (4 on my first trip, 2 on my second) other people ask for more coffee. If you can't keep up with the demand: stop offering coffee. On my second visit I skipped waiting for coffe and walked across the street to Starbuck's after getting my pastries. So, the product is good. The service is not.

We purchased my daughters wedding cake from here for her wedding on 9/20/14... it was fantastic....my daughter and her now husband tried some other bakery's but none could match the flavor of the cake they haf sampled at Dinkels...my daughter designed her cakes very simple but 5 layers able to feed 300 people...our venue was very old and vintage so she wanted a very traditional style cake with columns in the cake...it was done perfectly to her drawing and design. We had also sent a monogram they used for the wedding which they copied onto the cake...it was placed and copied perfectly! Everyone raved about the flavor of the cake, it was so moist and exactly what we wanted.... Joan is the wedding cake contact at Dinkels and she spent a good amount of time in our consultation going of exactly what we wanted....my daughter is quite the planner so we actually booked our cake about 6 months before the wedding, I was very impressed how Joan kept track of all our request and met them to perfection! Thank you Joan and Dinkels for helping to make the cake part of my daughter and son in laws wedding perfect!

Chicago is filled with so many amazing local bakeries and this is one of them. Its been in business since 1921 and I see why- fast service and great baked treats. I got a cinnamon bun, and besides the gooey overly frosted sinful cinnamon buns at Ann Sather's, I have to say that I enjoyed their approach to the cinnamon bun- no frosting, but yummy cinnamon and brown sugar yum!

My sister & I came in for the Punch keys aka Paczki. The ones we picked out they were sold out of except the Apple & Cinnamon. So she bought that & my 1 white frosted icing cake donut w/ red jimmies. That was a cake donut. Yummy. But before we left we placed a order for 12 & bought my birthday cake here. I decided to do something different. I'm used to a 2 or 3 layer birthday cake for me. My cake plus I'm eating it. So my sister bought my 2nd birthday cake. This was a white butter crème with light blue flowers and it was a 2 layer cake with chocolate butter crème frosting in between the layers. The top had a white cake the bottom had chocolate. It kept nice and so moist. It was too pretty to eat. I had the clerk William to write my name and my birthday age in dark green. Well we took pictures, it was a 8 inch cake ,it was small but I was happy to have that because it actually fit in the refrigerator. If it didn't fit well we would make it fit. They Paczki's were the best, they were moist and it was hard to figure out what flavor was what. When it came to the strawberry-raspberry & blue berry. The fillings were dark they all had frosting or powder sugar. The easiest take a knife and cut them in half and cheer if you had the correct flavor. It was a guessing game since we couldn't figure out. So Thank You to the staff @ Dinkels. That was a great birthday cake & more. I had a great birthday .

I used to like this place. They have the best paczkis too, so delicious. However I'm feeling pretty dissatisfied after my last visit. I placed a special order a few days in advance for 6 cinnamon rolls for my husbands birthday, his favorite. I got there the morning of shortly after they opened to pick up my order. Eventually someone came out to tell me they never made the order, and someone should have called to tell me wouldn't be making it. I understand that mistakes happen but they were unapologetic and didn't offer anything for the inconvenience. I ended up ordering four donuts instead. They should have been free or at least been discounted. Sorry Dinkels but after that I won't be back.

My husband bought me a birthday cake. We said he bought a white cake so I was thinking it might be a little dry... That was not the case! The cake was very moist and the frosting and the right sweetness. I def would order another cake! I'm very particular about my sweets too!

As this place is close to me, and we've been looking for a really good bakery, I was hoping for better. Gonna keep looking I guess. I was looking for good bread and deserts. Not donuts or cookies so this review doesn't cover those items. I got an assortment of deserts that included: Carrot cake cupcake - pretty traditional with cream cheese frosting Frankfurt Munich Pastry - a light spongy chocolate cake with a whipped cream center and covered in a ganache. I'll call it an Almond cake with white cake and whipped cream center - forgot the name, sorry Black Forrest cake - again a traditional (or so I thought) take on the classic. Also picked up two pretzels that had cheese baked into them, 2 pretzel rolls and 2 pretzel sticks. Guess I was feeling all pretzelly that day. They only had a white bread and a rye when I got there on Sunday late morning. Not sure if they ever do a French or Italian loaf which was really what I was looking for. First the cakes. Carrot cake was super dry. Overcooked to the point that I could barely get the wrapper off the darn thing. I ate it with a fork out of the paper as I gave up. It was the tastiest of the bunch but that's not saying much. The cream cheese frosting was definitely cut down with shortening as it didn't have the creamy consistency you hope for in this type of icing. The Frankfurt Munich pasty was so airy that it left me unsatisfied. Too wimpy a to be called a desert. Kinda like eating air. Taste was OK as there was a nice chocolate flavor from the ganache and offset by the cream so it wasn't too sweet. The almond cake again, same deal. No flavor for real and so light and airy it was like eating nothing. Finally the Black Forest cake - the worst offender - it was a little chocolate covered square with a nice cherry on top (so far so good) but then when you put a fork in it it was the same darn chocolate cake from the Frankfurt pasty but this time with pink whipped cream inside. Seriously? It was like they took one cherry, blended it into the cream and then stuffed this thing. No cherries, no gooey sticky stuff oozing out of the cake. Bupkus. So basically all the deserts were disappointing. And while they weren't expensive, they weren't cheap. Ranged from $2 to $4 per cake. They were worth $1.5 at most... On to the pretzels which were better. The cheese covered pretzels were good heated up so that was OK but I guess they swapped cheese for salt so they were kinda bland. The rolls were good. Good consistency and the best of the things I bought. The pretzel sticks were boring. Again, no real salt (it was on there but not much). And even though there was a "take a number" system, it seemed chaotic. I was passed over when the girl went from 38 to 40 (I was #39) guess they can't count either... I am so sad. Really wanted this place to be good (I walked 3/4 of a mile in 20 degree weather - that's how committed I was) but no dice. Still looking for great Italian and / or French bread in Lakeview so if anyone knows of a place, let me know!

Delicious sandwiches esp the Goldblatts! Make sure to call ahead to save 10-15 minutes. Wait at bakery can be long if busy but customer service is excellent.

Ummmmm.....the donuts here are yummy. I am usually not a big fan of cake donuts or old fashion, but I must admits that I liked them both here. It was the chocolate donut and the sour cream, I think Old Fashion. We also got the Burglar which has egg, bacon, spinach, cheese, pesto and toast: breakfast in one bite. They have a lot of other delicious stuff here and I can't wait to go back and try them.

I went to Dinkel's with a friend for a media event, and after walking in the front doors, I can't believe I had never been to Dinkel's before!!! The smell of doughnuts immediately met my nose, and I was swooning at all the available sweets! Service: So being there for a media event is different than just walking in since we got a personal tour from the owner and met his daughter. But one thing I noticed was how everyone working there greeted non-media people as they approached the counter. Ambience: first off, I love their Christmas decor in the windows - the John Hancock gingerbread house is just superb! The feel is a bit like a diner. It's cute, it's open, and there's seating. Food: I didn't even know Dinkel's had sandwiches, if I lived close enough, I would definitely go there for them all the time! I tried the ham on pretzel, tuna dill and vegetarian, and I can't pick out a single fault. Also, you MUST order their stollen - some of the best I've ever had! They even ship it to Germany! And watch out for the butter cookies - once you eat one, you may never stop!

After a bad experience with another local bakery who refused to take my cake order over the phone, I called Dinkel's and the phone was answered by a lovely and friendly woman named Tess (or Tessa?). She was efficient, funny, friendly, helpful and so polite. The other bakery needs to take a lesson from Tess(a). I have been inside Dinkel's many times and not always thrilled with the counter service. Their employees seem down trodden and somewhat indifferent about helping the customers, but not Tess! She was great and I will see what kind of service I get when I arrive to pick up my daughter's Frozen themed atomic birthday cake. If I'm not happy with their counter service or I don't like the cake, I will update this review. I have to give Tess 5 stars for her exemplary phone skills. It was a breath of fresh air to speak with her after the horrible service I received on the phone with that other bakery in town!

Excellent cookie, cakes, doughnuts and other sweets are just the beginning; Dinkle's has the best soups and sandwiches around! Fresh made bread, hearty soups, and the finest meats and cheeses in all the land, make this a must have for lunch. If they are making cheddar broccoli or the poblano pepper soup get there early, because it goes quick. Also, I have to mention Jay at the sandwich counter - he is super friendly, and focused on service - the perfect compliment to their food. Stop in for lunch, and pick up a cake on your way out, you won't be disappointed!

"That's why I like you, Pheebs. You don't f__k around when it comes to food!" What on earth could provoke a comment like that? A work potluck, that's what. I brought in a few cupcakes (red velvet, carrot cake, and chocolate) along with an eclair, and a fruit tart for some coworkers and we were all blown away. My very discerning coworker was more than pleased with the carrot cupcake. Dinkel's, if you can make a jaded Texan living in Chicago that ecstatic through a pastry, you're good in my book. Weekends can get kind of hectic and waiting to place orders can get disorganized. Don't fret, these pastries are worth it. I would choose a place like Dinkel's over a hyped up foofy boutique bakery, any day.

I am a pastry chef but I dont know why but I dont visit many well known bakeries so I was told to try Dinkle's and since Endgrain was closed I decided to try it out . They have been around since 1922 and now I know why I had the most fresh donut I have ever had in my life. Also got a box of their chocolate chip butter cookies for later! I ordered 3 donuts but I guess she didnt hear me say glazed, didnt notice till i was driving home but I will be going back so i will make sure she gets it right next time

Dinkel's was a nice stop on our Lakeview neighborhood tour. I had the opportunity to try a few things like a chocolate cake, frosted sugar cookies. Both of them were good, and priced okay (since Easter cookies were 2-for-1). Grab a number, this is old school! They have a nice large dine-in area if you can't wait to get your baked goods all the way home! Good for when you're in the neighborhood.

Ever since coming here, I've added to 'dinkel' to my limited, contrived vocabulary. I've dinkeled everything in my life. What brought me here was the promise of poppy seed filled goods. They're hard to come by, like a polar bear in a sauna. My tireless search finally yielded a hit; Dinkel's Bakery. The website promised poppyseed strudel. A nice flaky powdered sugar dusted pastry rolled around a thick, throat clogging helping of poppyseed filling. --I nearly nutted-- My husband was worried about buying and housing such a large quantity of opiates in our house, being military and all. I don't think he realized how bad my addiction had truly manifested. I was in a dark place. When I got there, I was on a raging opiate induced couch-cushion-flipping-hunt for said strudel. I saw nothing behind the counter. I was going to launch an all out strike on the hull of Dinkel's until my husband pointed to the freezer. FROZEN POPPIED GOODS!!!!!!!!!! --insert dramatic faint, and tantrum induced foot stomping-- I was deduced to buying 'old' pastries from a fridge???????? Just in case, I swiped a butter cake with white frosting in case the frosty tin of empty promises let me down. I thawed the strudel for about 45 minutes, it's as long as I could wait. I sliced into the powdery delight and sheepishly took a bite. Heaven.

Excellent food, but the wait can be long on weekends. One day I went in to pick up donuts for a birthday, but after waiting for a while I ended up walking out because they had sold out of what I wanted. If you go on a Saturday go early.

Pastry break. Love this bakery! Across the street you can put your flashers on and park for 15 minutes without paying for parking. Stopped in as I happened to be in the area. Not sure I have ever had anything from this bakery that I did not like. Their chocolate chip butter cookies are divine as are the many pastries. I happen to love the cheese filled dusted with powdered sugar that they have most everyday. Bonus that they had a holiday fruit cake that must have weighed 5 pounds that I bought for my 86 year old mother who just loves the stuff. Made her day for sure.

My favorite bakery in the city! Dinkel's is an old school bakery that offers a huge selection without the glitz and glamour of other northside bakeries. Simple and always high quality. Their old fashioned donuts are my favorite in the city-- crisp with the perfect density and not overly sweet. I ordered a friend's wedding cake (white cake with a raspberry preserve filling), and it was a huge hit and absolutely beautiful. The price was also very reasonable compared to other bakeries. The staff is always helpful and friendly too!

I think I have to even out my experience on this one. First off, the bakery is in a good location and is super cute, very clean. Being a Detroiter I needed to get some pÄ…czki on PÄ…czki Day! I woke up early, got to the bakery and expected them to be churning out people in this line like they do in Detroit. Instead I ended up waiting an hour and 5 minutes to get to the front of the line? I question if it was a line because there was no clear direction whether to wait in line or pull a number, it was just unorganized. People's orders were missing, the staff seemed overwhelmed and understaffed. If I had to review just the pÄ…czki, they were delish - Raspberry lemon was by far the best, but my chocolate with custard inside was also good. They had a great variety! I don't want to give them a low score, but on the other hand, you need to run your business better on a hugely busy morning.

I had my first ever paczki today, and it was from Dinkel's. Damn was it good. If you like donuts, you should try one of these! I tried the blueberry one (awesome), the raspberry-lemon one (awesome), and the chocolate cream one (delicious, but not as good as the others). What are you waiting for, go get a paczki!

This place gets one star just for serving one of my favorites, the sour cream cake donut. We went here for desert after dinner at New England Seafood down the street. It was close to closing time on a Friday night. It seemed that the lighting was a little dark inside. The place had a larger counter section with so many baked goods to choose from. Immediately, someone asked if we needed help. They serve a lot of the bakery staples found in traditional, family-owned bakeries. Hubby ordered the mocha roulade (too dry) and a slice of the marbled cake with wedding icing (moist, but the icing was really sugary and grainy). I ordered a sour cream donut, which was delicious! I also tried a chocolate caramel eclair dessert, but it wasn't that great or memorable. So some things are hit or miss, given the sheer variety and volume of the offerings. One this is for sure, they do specialize in donuts. I will definitely go back for the donuts alone. If the sour cream donut was that good, the other ones should be too! Per the website, Wednesdays are donut special days (4 for $4).

I have been going since I was a little kid and have fond memories from my childhood. I went one week day to buy pastries for my coworkers since it was my birthday. I spent about $40 bucks on pastries and a coffee. I asked for milk for my coffee. They looked at me like I was crazy and said they don't serve milk with coffee and I was free to buy a milk if I wanted it with my coffee. WHAT?! I just spent $40 and all I am asking is for a drop of milk with my coffee?! At first I thought the girl was joking and started laughing. She then looked at me like I was crazy. I left Dinkels after spending $40 and in frustration. I called later to ask the name of the manager. They told me, I wrote him a letter and never heard back. I was furious! Since then, I have been making memories at a new bakery. Wish you could give zero stars. PS donuts not that fresh. Pastries, have had better. Service, what service? **** I appreciate the owner's response to my Yelp comment. The owner mentioned this was the first time he had heard of this incident. The letter was never returned to sender, so I am not sure who read the letter at Dinkels and chose not to respond. ****It is also ironic that when I sent the owner a private message, he did not respond. Obviously, Dinkels is more concerned about public opinion as opposed to its actual customers. Unfortunately my mom ordered our Thanksgiving pies from Dinkels, she has promised not to in the future!

Dinkle's provided my wedding cake - yum! My fiancée and I stopped by a few months before our wedding for a tasting, and were walked out on a sugar high (which neither of us could complain about). We ordered a two-tiered cake. The top layer was the Butter Kuchen with cream cheese and the bottom layer was the Chocolate with cream cheese filling. The day of our wedding, Dinkle's delivered the cake on-time to our reception location, and it looked exactly how we had hoped. More importantly, it tasted exactly how we had hoped! Thanks to the team at Dinkle's who helped make our day special!

We've been here a couple of times for our bakery indulgence. One thing I remember that stands out is the large Dinkel's sign that directs you to the storefront from the street. That section of Lincoln Avenue already seems like it is historic or something, but the sign really draws you in, and makes you wonder what it was like back in 1920s Chicago when it first opened. Inside there is an excellent selection of baked goods. Mouthwatering items such as cookies, glazed donuts, bear claws, rolls, and if you look to the left of the display cases there are freezers or refrigerators with cheese cakes and all kinds of other goodies. We always leave with a few bags to hold us over (our sweet tooth) for the week. Pro Tip: be on the lookout for their daily specials, and get a hot cup of Metropolis coffee while you wait!

I'm done with this bakery. It pains me to even say this since I grew up on their baked goods. I even had my wedding cake done by them 14 years ago. Over the years I've watched the quality dwindle and once they jumped on the cupcake train the quality was even worse. How heartbreaking :( the coffee cake isn't the same- the Danishes are dry and they no longer have a real selection of cake slices (they plenty of "tortes") and they no longer make the lemon cake unless it's for a wedding cake. Literally the only thing worth going for are the donuts- and quite frankly a lot of places sell amazing donuts. Goodbye old friend- you've disappointed me for the last time....

My husband and I ordered our wedding cake from Dinkel's. It was not only beautiful, but delicious as well! Many of our wedding guests had 2 pieces of cake! Butter Kuchen is a must! Cute bakery with cozy sitting area. We will be going back to dinkel's many more times.

My favorite neighborhood bakery. Just wish I couldn't smell the yummy donuts when I walk out of the gym beside it!

very good - highly recommended. Stay away from Dunkin Donuts and similar franchise establishments. This place is the real thing for cakes, pastries, and other treats. Try various selections as I did and you'll taste the difference right away. They also have a café restaurant there. I have not eaten there so I have no comment on that. Lee

I recently catered an order from Dinkel's for a brunch party. I ordered a variety of pastries and sandwiches over the phone and had no issues with the ordering process. Also, I will start by saying I was very satisfied by the taste of the items I ordered and the quantity for the price. Where I did face issues, was with the customer service. I came in early the morning of the day I was picking up the order, just to order a tea and check the status of the order. I was not going to pick it up until 10am because I wanted the egg items to still be warm for my event. This seemed to cause some confusion, because they brought the order out to where I was sitting around 8:00am. I asked if I could wait to get it, that I would come back because I wanted the sandwiches to still be warm. The workers stated that I would need to microwave them on my own. This is not what was communicated to me previously over the phone, and I stated this to the girl. Fortunately, they were able to agree to heat them up for me when I would come back at 10 to pick them up. When I did arrive back to pick up the order, I was met with even more frustration from two of the workers. Specifically, the girl who seemed to be "in-charge" I did not get her name, but she had dark brown hair, she was shorter, and wore black framed glasses (date of the event was 6/13). She handed me more order with such rudeness, and then proceeded to roll her eyes and whisper comments to another girl working behind the counter, while staring at me and giggling. It was very immature and disrespectful. I asked if I had the entire order, and she just said yes and walked away. However, when looking into the refrigeration storage behind the counter I saw my last name written large on another bundle of food. So I asked her again very nicely, letting her know I saw my name on a bag in fridge. She said NO. So I said, "Oh okay, thank you" and just turned and started walking away, and then she came back at me and just basically tossed the other bag from the fridge on the floor by me. I would understand their frustration if I was asking for them to heat up 20 sandwiches for me on a busy day and if I had not requested this previously. However, it was only 8 sandwiches that I needed and both times I was in the bakery, there were only about 3 other customers around. Also, the entire time I was in the bakery I responded pleasantly even though I was being faced with terrible customer service. I have to still give 3 stars for how tasty the food did wind up and for the nice employees I spoke to over the phone when initially ordering the food. It is too bad they did not have stronger customer service on 6/13 when I came to pick up my order...

In the mood for something sweet? Well you can sure satisfy your craving here. Display windows are filled with delicious creamy mouth watering options. We went for a slice of white chocolate mousse cake. It was awesome! Soft cake surrounded by a light creamy filling. It was a lite cake yet pleasing to my sweet tooth. They were offering free samples of a variety of donuts, one with sugar & cinnamon, powder and plain. All were good. Had to walk away cause we were eating more than we should of after all it was a free sample tasting!

Delicious wedding cake that was gorgeous! I tried cakes from several boutique shops in the city but this one tasted the best, which was very important to me. They also drew the exact scroll that I wanted on the cake. Definitely go with Dinkel's!

I couldn't let the Chicago door hit me on my shapely buttocks before stopping in at Dinkel's. I'd always marveled that I'd never been here, considering that it's 1.) a Chicago staple, 2.) it's a bakery and 3.) I'm me. Weird. But, I finally did it. I got to Dinkel's. And, all was right with the world... but not my waistline. First of all: sophisticakes. Love.the.name . Second of all: a ginormous palm-sized vanilla cake ('cupcake' is way misleading) filled with strawberries and topped with white frosting. Third of all, getting two of these bad boys for the price of one. Seriously? Seriously?? I need to watch my boyish figures. I have milkshake-yard-etc. duties to fulfill and they can't happen if I am doing the truffle shuffle. Why do I have zero will power? Why are these cakes so good? Why do they have such a catchy name??? Why was the second sophisticake chocolate with chocolate mousse filling? Why did I order a cinnamon bun on top of all this?? Oh, Dinkel's. I thought we were friends. I now realize that we're frenemies. You claimed to like me but you just wanted to get me fat before the big dance. It's okay, though. Zaftig is totally making a comeback.

Their service is always great. The girls are just so friendly, especially the manager with the brown hair. But sometimes they look exhausted and overworked, I hate to give business to a business that has a boss who can't help his employees out when they obviously look exhausted. Ive been coming to dinkels for 5 years now and its the same! Once I waited in line for about 30 minutes, understandable, while the boss would just walk around and not even help out the girls during a rush. They didn't do anything, not even encouragement! you can even see the old man yelling at the girls. which i don't tolerate! But I do because my family likes the taste of the items. The good side is that they have tasty cake slices. Like the chocolate cake! Although their cake taste good, sometimes I feel as if their cupcakes taste like refrigerator. They have been in the refrigerator so long that they start tasting like the fridge and not a cupcake. The cupcake icing and cake gets so hard that i loose my appetite eating one. Luckily, my kids will eat anything because they are kids. But I on the other hand cannot stand the refrigerator tasting hard cupcakes.

Chicago is filled with bakeries and places to get treats, but Dinkels tops them all!! It's one of the oldest bakeries in Chicago and family owned - generation after generation.... I love that!!! I go here for all my special occasions. My wedding cake was from here and we had a great taste testing (which my now husband I were looking so forward to!) and really helped design our own cake!! When I have a wedding or baby shower I'm throwing... even batchelorette party.... this is my go to place. I brought a carrot cake to one shower and I got half a dozen comments where I had gotten this cake. People at the shower said it was honestly the best carrot cake they had EVER had (and they were carrot cake lovers!). The atmosphere is so warm in there and feels so "old Chicago" and now they have added the extra café space, which is great. Their new sandwich menu is A-mazing and my kids just love the sandwiches too :) We are going to Springfield, IL this weekend for Thanksgiving and we are surprising the in-laws with a cake from here because every time they come up to visit they always make a stop at Dinkels! .... and don't forget to ask about the Grrgrr the Cow book they sell, which is the imagination of Mr. Dinkel and illustrated by his daughter Sandgren. (It's a great Christmas stocking stuffer!)

Donuts are the best in the city. Any cake donut is amazing. Long wait usually on weekends but well worth it. Reasonable prices and a great, friendly, helpful staff. Consistent on every level! Thanks Dinkel's for being such a staple in the city!

Okay I have just found a new love at this location...The Old Fashioned! What is that you ask? It is the most amazing donut I have ever had in my life. This donut is crisp on the outside and covered with a yummy glaze and soft on the inside. This could possibly be the best donut ever made. In the words of Homer.....Mmmmmmmmmmmmm! I might be addicted to it, after a day. I had one on Friday and found myself buying another one on Tuesday! Why are you doing this to me Dinkel's??? The description of the donut says sour cream...it really was not a huge selling point for me...all I could think was baked potato. They should just describe it as the best donut ever made in the world. I think I would franchise this place and make that donut for the world! Thanks Dinkel's just when I was caked out...you give me the Old Fashioned...what do you have up your sleeve next for me?

Something you should know I recently ordered a graduation cake for a Sunday. I called in the morning to make sure the cake was done correctly, it was not. They were unable to remedy the problem since no decorators were there. My cake was created on Saturday. So instead of getting a fresh cake, I was getting a day old cake. They need to share that information when you order for Sunday pick up that the cake will be day old.

We love Dinkel's. The donuts are the best we have ever found. Always fresh and made from scratch. No packaged mix from a donut chain here! The wait is worth it. It's great for families creating childhood memories of special treats on Sunday mornings.

My favorite donuts in the city! Their sour cream donut is amazing. The cakes and cookies look delicious as well, but I haven't tried them yet. Seriously, skip your regular breakfast stop on your way to work and come here.

If there is one oddity they have, it's poppy-seed streusel. This place has the best. Where most places have a thin layer of poppy-seed streusel, this place lays it on thick! So good! My only grip is, it's $17 for a loaf! Supply and demand I guess. I did try the almond coffee cake and Bavarian creme donuts, which I thought were pretty good too.

I happened to be driving by early one morning (which I never to) so I thought. Dinkel's, 7am on a weekday, no one's there, grab a donut. I asked the girl at the counter what her favorites were and she recommended the sour cream and jelly bismark. The jelly bismark was good with a nice serving inside of jelly. The sour cream was a old fashioned that seemed to me to be a great coffee dunking donut but didn't really offer enough flavor on its own. Given that I'm not a coffee drinker I couldn't test my hypothesis. I appreciate that your dollar goes a lot further here than some of the new, up and coming bakeries in the Chicago scene. Dinkel's is a Chicago classic but I think I'm going with the new crowd instead.

I had been to a gathering where someone brought a fantastic coffee cake. It was melt in your mouth delicious, with multiple flavors dobbed on the roundish coffee cake. It was so good, I asked where it was purchased. Dinkel's Bakery. Recently, I had to bring a coffee cake to a party. Immediately, I decided I would go way out of my way and buy one of those Dinkel's coffee cakes. Being that it was Thanksgiving week, I called ahead to see if they would be open Monday, as I knew they probably would not be open on Thursday, the day I needed the cake. Yes, I was told, we will be open this Monday. Well, I made the way out of my way trip and they were NOT open on Monday. But, because I was on a mission to buy that delicious coffee cake for a party for others to enjoy as much as I had enjoyed that cake in the past, I made another special trip to Dinkel's the next day. Looking at all their bakery items, I did not see the coffee cake I wanted. Finally, I asked. At first I was told no, but someone overhearing my query said that they did make a multiple flavored coffee cake, but only occasionally. What to do? I bought two peach coffee cakes, donuts, and some cupcakes, because that coffee cake I remembered was so delicious! Sad to say, the peach coffee cakes I bought(and froze till needed) were bone dry, probably because they were overbaked. The cupcakes weren't that good, though beautiful to look at. The donuts were the best items I purchased. All in all, it was not worth my time or gas to make a special trip to Dinkel's. I don't know if my experience was a fluke, because they were too busy during Thanksgiving week, or the norm. However, having had a really delicious cake from them, I was sad that the items I purchased were not that good. In fact, on the day of the party, one would have thought that the Dinkel's coffee cake would have been the best of all the coffee cakes. Actually, Jewel's was better, moister, tastier. I am very sorry to review this iconic bakery this way. As I mentioned, I don't know if they just had an off day, for clearly, this is a very busy place. Masses enjoy their products, and I did, too, so it was disappointing and unexpected to have this negative experience.

I pretty much can't ever come to this neighborhood without justifying a stop at Dinkel's. Like, if I'm within 2 miles of it I'll find a reason to come by. They have surprisingly generous hours for a bakery (I came here at 6:45pm at some point last week), and I'm never disappointed. I pretty much only get the donuts so I can't weigh in on any of the other delicious looking things they have in there. But the donuts are amazing. And cheap compared to any of the "boutique" donut shops in the city.. less than 2 dollars each and sometimes just a dollar. On Wednesday I think you can get any 6 for 6 dollars which is a crazy good deal. The old fashioned is my favorite, with the chocolate frosted cake a close second. I had a pumpkin/cream cheese one when it was seasonally appropriate, but I wish they had it all the time! My last visit also included a maple walnut cake donut... I WANT TO GO THERE RIGHT NOW. Staff is friendly, it's charming inside. There are spots to put your flashers on right outside so you can run in to get your donut fix.

This has long been our go-to doughnut place. It's packed on the weekends so you need to go early. Their doughnuts are amazing. I find their cupcakes ok (though I'm super picky about my cake since I bake). Their strawberry cake is one of the best I've had and they customize. They also make breads. What prompted me to review after living near for 3 years is their AMAZING SANDWICHES. We have long needed a good sandwich place and their sandwiches are wonderful. Fresh ingredients, custom made, huge and they are so reasonably priced. If you are ever around during lunch, go here for a sandwich. Hopefully they start breakfast sandwiches soon!

It's a Sunday afternoon and my wife has a taste for some bakery goods. Since we are in the Dinkel's Bakery neighborhood anyway, let's stop in. My wife orders a cake donut. She usually does not like them, too heavy and dry, but this one is truly good she says. I have a taste and it is pretty good. It is lighter and moister than you would think for a cake donut. The donut is $1.09 and she also gets a hot tea for $1.49 each. My youngest daughter decides on a small fresh fruit tart for $4.29 each. Which has some very fresh tasting fruit and she says she really likes it a lot. My son also orders a donut for $1.09 each. He polishes it off and likes it too. My oldest daughter orders a fancy cake slice for $3.98 each. This time dear old Dad does not order anything and just samples from his loving family. Everything tastes fresh and the service is very friendly. The place is busy for a late Sunday afternoon stop. Dinkel's is another good bakery choice in the city of Chicago.

Amazing sandwiches, good prices and strong coffee. The employees were all nice to a fault and went the extra mile to explain the ingredients and their recommendations. The decorations remind me of a Wes Anderson movie for some reason. It feels cool to be part of a place open since 1922.

Serious fail for Dinkel's Bakery. I placed an order for an assortment of 2 1/2 dozen dinner rolls to be picked up on the morning of Christmas Eve. When I got there the place was absolutely packed and I had to wait about 25 minutes to pick up my order. I had somewhat expected this so at that point all is well. Finally my number is called and I pick up my bag of rolls, pay, and I'm on my way. Mistake #1-I should've checked the bag before I left. I got to my car to discover that while the sticker on the bag said "assortment" all I had was 2 1/2 dozen PLAIN dinner rolls. But ok, I can live with plain dinner rolls, I'm not going back inside that madhouse. I got home and decided I would try one and that is where everything really went south. These dinner rolls were terrible, and I mean terrible. They were rock hard, like they had been baked several days before hand. I would have been embarassed to serve those to my family. Luckily I only paid about $8 for them and was able to go to Panera to pick up a couple loaves as a replacement. Terrible experience, I will not be visiting Dinkel's again.

Get their doughnuts!!! Amazing Price. Amazing Taste! Bakers dozen! Totally worth it! They always have deals on their doughnuts. I will keep coming back. In fact, I might go by there again today. My favorite is there Maple, and then the original. So so good.

We heard of Dinkel's from Laschet's, but had walked by Dinkel's many times. Oh, the missed opportunities. Donuts were fantastic, the German Chocolate Cake well worth the trip. Only bad thing about this place is that it does not deliver to my bedroom. Yum.

I'm not ashamed to admit that my boyfriend and I eat a LOT of doughnuts. Not enough for it to be a problem, but we probably consume them more than the average human being. Our go-to place for doughnuts in Chicago is Dinkel's, and they never disappoint. My favorite doughnut of all time is an old fashioned (or sour cream), and they have one of the best. Very lightly glazed, with the perfect amount of crispiness around the edges. Other notable doughnuts we have tried: the chocolate cake and chocolate bismarck, both of which have nearly 1/4 inch of chocolate glaze on top (so delicious); the red velvet, which had a generous piping of cream cheese frosting; the maple bacon doughnut, that has the perfect balance of bacon and maple flavor and the glazed, which is deliciously yeasty. I just finished a doughnut 5 minutes ago and I am already craving more.

Don'tbe fooled by the looks of the baked goods- they look delicious but YUCK- everything I have tried has been tasteless. The last attempt was a cheese danish. The cheese was like mushy mucous and awful. I do not reccommend anything here- go to Whole Foods down the street for quality Hey, by the way, the owner is anti semetic and makes nasty remarks about Jews to other merchants on the street- evidently the genius can't tell who the Jews are and just runs off at the mouth. So- if you are a Nazi get your swastika sweets here.

Thank you, Groupon, for giving me extra incentive to hit up Dinkel's, offering a $15 certificate for only $5. My mental notes: - Parallel parking located right outside Dinkel's reserved for customers? Nice. - Groupon says I get 3 free danishes if redeemed Mon-Thurs. Must try the danish. (The cherry and apricot were yummo.) - Service with a smile is underrated. Way to go employees. - A lot of people are picking up cakes. - Any bakery that serves pretzel twists gets a thumbs up. - This place is huuuge. - All these customers = chaos! Where's the line? Oh, there's numbers by the door. - OOH jumbo cupcakes! The mini pumpkin pie was delicious. The cupcakes ranged from $1.99-$2.89 and were better than I expected. The apple one had surprise bits of caramel chewies in the frosting. Genius! Bookmark it!

Most everything I've had here is good. I'd give it 4 stars if I didn't have to deal with the awful employees. My girlfriend would give this place one star, probably. We really don't like the employees...at all. Like, I'm not rude to you, I say hi, I ask for a few old fashioned donuts, I give you a few dollars, you should give me my change, maybe flash a fake smile, maybe thank me for coming in or wish me a good day, or maybe nothing at all. I have a hard time imagining how these girls are able to inject the amount of rudeness they do into such a simple transaction, but they manage to do it, time and time again. I've more or less decided to stay away from here, and leaving this review has just made me feel more strongly about it!

You know that section in your Yelp profile re: Most Recent Discovery or something? Lately, mine would have to read Dinkel's Bakery...and yes, I know I don't have an answer for mine. I have passed this place for years, and I know it's not "new". I did get my butt over here recently for some treats: - dinner rolls: They were quite heavenly after about 8 minutes in the oven. Also good with the soup I had from next door. - Ginger crinkle cookies (or ginger snaps): probably my most favorite item I bought. Even though I thought they were a tad salty, I still went through these rather quickly while at work. I was sad when they were all gone...which only means I have to go back for more. - Praline Pecan Strudel: Located in the freezer section, I snatched one of the remaining loaves. Eh, it was ok. I liked the sweetness and the crunchiness from the pecans, but the cake part was a little dry. I microwaved some slices, which helped a bit. I definitely wouldn't rule it out completely because it went well with the hot mochas I had. I had spent a good amount of time browsing around since it wasn't busy. The employees were probably thinking: is she really going to buy, or is she just going to drool over everything? They have a ton of other items I wanted to get but didn't want to leave the bakery looking like a little piggy. That's what other visits are for...wink. For the record: I did not drool over anything.

Dinkel's is simply the best! They did our wedding cake for us and it was the most delicious and beautiful cake I've ever seen. All of our guest said that it was the best cake they'd ever had and many of them asked for seconds. The butter cream is so, so good. It's not sticky sweet and grainy like a lot of butter creams so it just melts in your mouth - hence the second helping. And the chocolate donuts are amazing. We love them so much that we gave them out as our wedding favors. Our guests loved them!! If you are looking for the best stuff on the planet, Dinkel's is your place.

When my parents first started dating, they'd visit Dinkel's for hot chocolate and butter cookies before going on romantic strolls through Lakeview. In remembrance of that love and my love for delicious bakery, I'll hop in for some sweetness whenever I can. I know what I'll be serving for dessert at my wedding reception ;) p.s. - Their breakfast spinach strudels are amazing!

As usual, I waited until nearly the last possible second to use a Groupon. But with the Groupon for the historic bakery Dinkel's that expires on Halloween, I had a good excuse. I read in a talk thread that they had cider donuts (in season). So I put off going for weeks. Finally, in order to not to have this Groupon become history without my using it, I went on a day off I had last Wednesday. Was it worth the wait (and therefore the anticipation) I gave it? Does a pumpkin get frost in September? Yeah, that's a big maybe. See, Dinkel's turned out to be a wonderfully cute little nostalgic store as advertised. Set up like a soda counter that was turned into a bakery, it literally screams history. Though that scream is muddled a bit by the fact that they sell everything from t-shirts to coffee mugs to reusable shopping bags emblazoned with their logo. Well, I guess the same can be said about Gettysburg (well maybe not the shopping bags) and that place is awesome so I can't hold branding against Dinkel's too much. Also, the selection and variety here were tremendous. I almost became part of the historical record with how long I stood there staring at the cases overloaded with sweets of all types. And it must be said that the prices for cupcakes, only $2.00 or so a piece, were also pleasantly nostalgic (or historic from before the cupcake craze). All the prices were, in fact, great. For my $15.00 (purchased for $5), I brought home a Halloween themed menagerie of sugar. From a large pumpkin shaped cookie to a cupcake with a witch shaped ring in it, I went all out. Unfortunately, none of the flavors of the bounty (for me at least) did. Everything tasted pretty average and the smaller cherry topped and sprinkle cookies I purchased were really dry. In all my sensory overload, I forgot to purchase the cider donut. So I might go back just for that. Though I think I can wait until next year. Dinkel's will still be around and maybe there will be another Groupon making it actually worthwhile.

I really only need to say one word: Bienenstich. Oh. Mah. Gawd. We were up in the city, checking out some stores, and a few doors down was Dinkels. We thought it was worth a try. I WILL be back!! Not only was this pastry one of the best things I've had, the little side room had a warm fireplace and was super cozy.

Dropped in for a take home dessert after a movie and dinner. I felt like a fat kid in a pastry shop, then realized... I was a fat kid in a pastry shop. Took home a German Chocolate wedge, slice of Butterscotch Roulade. Also a chocolate cupcake with white frosting and a white cupcake with chocolate frosting. Did I mention the fat kid in a pastry shop thing? Finished off with a half dozen each of the Chocolate Butter cookies and Pecan Sandys. They were very light on the sweet side (just the way I like them) and literally melted in my mouth. They were excellent with a cup of mocha this morning.

For the past two years, Dinkel's has been my bakery of choice for my birthday cake. Yes, I'm 27 years old and still require cake on my birthday. I don't see why this is a problem. Anyway, the cake is typically the other element of my birthday parties that receives as much praise as my glamourous ensembles. It's perfectly moist, and the frosting rich without being cavity-inducing and stomach-upsetting sweet. I'm lucky that my friends didn't eat it all so I can enjoy it a few more times. The service was on point on both occasions. This year I realized at the last minute that I wouldn't be able to pick up my cake on the day of my party, so on Thursday afternoon I called to see if they could have it ready by the next day. It was no problem, and their flexibility helped immensely. Should I find myself still in Chicago in a year's time, I have no doubt that Dinkel's will help me celebrate my 28th.

Dinkel's holds a very special place in my heart. My family has been going here for quality baked goods since they arrived in this country (shortly after Dinkel's had opened). I'll never forget my dad recounting the stories of his grandmother climbing up the stairs to their apartment and his anticipation that she was bringing some treats from Dinkel's, which most times she was. I've never had something here I didn't love, and that goes for my entire family. The chocolate donuts are incredible. I'm convinced they could make decent coin just serving the donuts and nothing else. Well, maybe some fresh coffee to wash them down (their coffee is great, by the way). The little butter cookies half dipped in chocolate (the same used for the donuts) are divine. The powdered sugar donuts and butter ring coffee cake are a real treat. Their chocolate chip cookies are down right famous, I dare you to try and eat just two. Even the bacon donuts are great, only served on weekends I believe. I've had their custom cakes at going-away and birthday parties and they are truly top-notch. It can get quite busy, but the ladies behind the counter work very quickly and with a smile. Prices are very reasonable, but if you want to use plastic, there is a $10 minimum. If there is a heaven, mine would have a Dinkel's on every corner.

What a cool, old-school local bakery! Had a wonderful experience a few weeks ago. DEBBIE, one of the managers there, has absolutely amazing customer service skills. And she does it all with a smile on her face. We came at the end of the day, and she was so accommodating. The cakes we ordered were delicious and she even helped me out to the car since I was carrying my toddler. She made my experience so great that I'm excited to go back and try more goodies.

What's not to love?? The insanely delicious donuts? The cupcakes with the light whippy buttercream? The hand decorated iced cookies? Or the authentic German pastries like the stollen, strudels and coffee cake? By far my favorite bakery in the neighborhood and the city, for that matter. The addition of their cafe with cleverly named sandwiches just gives me another reason to pop in here with the kiddos--treats for everyone! My personal favorite is the caprese. The bread is crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside, the mozzarella and tomato slices are generous and the pesto brings it all together. I dare you to walk in here and not immediately experience a mouth watering urge to try everything in sight. I love bringing my business to a bakery with such a rich history and tradition. I'm pretty confident it will be around for another 90+ years!

Sad to say this place is heading down hill. Not only are they walking distance to a handful of better bakeries, but they've never managed to improve their outdated processes and inefficiencies. I've just walked out after waiting in line for 20 minutes thus morning to get doughnuts. 6 people behind the counter, only one apparently able to assist customers? Wish the product was worth the wait but it's really not. Sorry Dinkles. It'll be sad when they put a Walgreens in that space... But at least it will serve a purpose.

I can't stand the Staff at this place. I have never experienced such horrible Customer Service. I work down the street and love the Cup cakes. But I REFUSE to give any money to Dinkel's due to the RUDE/NASTY/ STAFF, the old lady with the short red hair and glasses need's to GO. I wanted to punch her in the face the other day and walked out. IT"S THAT BAD!!!!

I went to Dinkel's last weekend with my two boys. The chocolate donuts are too good! Huge, smothered in chocolate and they taste like God handed em to ya! I was by there today and had to stop by for a few more. Everything in there looks fantastic. Next time I will pick up some danish and maybe something else. This is a famous place, but quite frankly even better than I had hoped for!

What's not to love? Dinkel's is so delicious! My favorite is to buy a packaged cake from the fridge (still homemade, just not as fancy as the ones under the glass). They're about $15. They'll write a message on it in pretty icing for free, and viola! You are the hero of the birthday/engagement/St. Patrick's Day party. EVERYONE loves Dinkel's cake. I do wish they had more grab and go stuff for a crowd; i.e. something you can bring to a party for a group. I have a lot of friends that love Dinkel's but don't live nearby, so it's fun to bring them a treat as a hostess gift.

I love Dinkel's, especially now that they serve Sandwiches and soup! I have tried The Woolworth sandwich and Wieboldt's Tuna sandwich, both were amazing; huge and super fresh. Their doughnuts and cheese bearclaws always satisfy my sweet cravings. Definitely one of the best bakeries in the area!

I walk by here often and have been wanting to try it because there are always really long lines. I finally stopped in today and was extremely disappointed. As I was waiting in line, I noticed a sign that said there is a $10 minimum on credit cards- as soon as I got to the front, I told the cashier that I'm a first time customer, didn't have cash on me, and asked if she could charge a pastry to my card just this once and I will be sure to bring cash next time. She just pointed to the sign. I said I know, I saw the sign, I'm asking if you can let me use my card just this time, and you can charge me $.50 extra to cover the fees (I don't care how you do your math, $.50 is significantly more than the 3% they pay in processing fees per transaction). She said that if I bought 3 donuts and a coffee for $6, she'd let me use my card, and I said I was hoping to get a pastry- she just stared at me and said sorry, so I walked out. The way I see it, I offered to PAY them to let me try a pastry and potentially become a regular (I buy a pastry every morning on my way to work). It's unfortunate, because the pastries looked good, but I will not return to a business that clearly cares so little about me as a customer.

Excellent experience overall! Top notch bakery! Ordered a cake and some custom stroller cookies for a baby shower and Dinkel's came through. The cake (white cake with buttercream frosting and filling) turned out perfect and was delish to boot. Also, the cookies were tasty and added to the presentation for the dessert table. Received many compliments about how good the cake was! Will try to post a couple of pics. Also, love their pretzel bread items-regular pretzels, sticks and buns! Yummo!

Love this place. It is old school / old world. So expect that sort of baked goods. The cream of the crop are the chocolate covered donuts and sour cream donuts. The carrot cake is amazing, and done just like they would in the 1950's! plenty of butter and cream cheese frosting. Pies are excellent, as are the cookies and coffee. The staff is very kind in this splendid old neighborhood joint. Give them try, if you like old school you will love Dinkel's!

This bakery keeps it old school with it's long glass counters filled with a variety of sweets and savories to titillate the senses! You can't help but walk in and be hit with a huge wave of nostalgia for childhood memories involving parents telling you that you can only pick one thing and agonizing over it until you made your final decision. I used Dinkle's to order an engagement cake for my two friends and was so happy with their level of service. I submitted an online order with a few requests and heard back from someone within 24hours letting me know what could and couldn't be done. They were friendly and polite and extremely helpful. Not to mention they executed what I had envisioned perfectly! My friends LOVED the cake. It took them a good 3 hours before they could even bear to cut the thing because it was so pretty and they "never had their picture on a cake before." Not only did it look wonderful, but it tasted so so good! The cake was so moist and the buttercream was some of the best I've ever had. Not too sweet and it had a nice, thick consistency. Highly recommend using Dinkel's for any special occasions - or if you just have a hankering for something sweet!

Good bakery, awful customer service. Witness: Years ago, in my pre-Yelp days, I was in charge of ordering cakes for the office birthdays. This was done on a monthly basis, and yes, this was before the recession. Everyone always loved the cakes, in particular the one I christened "Twinkie Cake" which was yellow cake, whipped cream filling and buttercream frosting. For our annual company meeting/holiday party, once again I looked to Dinkel's to deliver the goods. They delivered the bads. They messed up the cake and instead of the (sports marketing) company logo I'd emailed them, they "go rogue" and do some cheeseball floral design instead. It gets worse. The call I placed Monday morning seemed satisfactory - Mr. Dinkel the elder apologized and offered a store credit (worth about two months' cakes). I trusted this and didn't think to get it in writing. Naive girl! I called the next month to place the usual cake order, but after speaking to the usual order-taker, who couldn't find any record of our credit, I was transferred to the younger Mr. Dinkel. He not only would not honor the credit offered earlier, he claimed it "Didn't sound like my dad" to offer a make-good. He then tried to tell me I shouldn't be complaining, because after all we got a cake. What??? The lack of basic customer service and amount of attitude actually made my eyes pop out of my head. He was a true punk-ass chump. Needless to say, our monthly cake order of ~$80 went to another bakery and one *pointed* letter went in the mail. Avoid.

I absolutely love this place. This has been my go-to stop whenever I need to pick something up for work or a special occasion. The doughnuts are AWESOME. They aren't the yeasty ones you get at Dunkin Donuts, they're more cakelike. I usually come here first thing in the morning to pick up doughnuts for work, and I always get them just a little bit warm. They are to die for. They have a maple bacon doughnut on weekends that is incredible as well. The cupcakes are great. Definitely one of the better red velvet cupcakes I've had in the city. The tortes are great as well. I've gotten them a few times for birthdays and I have no complaints at all. The bread here is also really, really good and reasonably priced. I'm hoping to come in and try their Cafe now that they've opened it.

I called Dinkels to see if I could get a cake for my husband's birthday. I called on Friday around noon and they had no problem with me needing the cake the next day. It was about $40 for a quarter sheet cake. They tell me no problem and to pick it up any time after 11am the next day. I arrive at 11:25 and ask for my order. The girl takes my name, walks to the back and comes back. She turns to a completely different customer (a much taller man) and says "what was the name again?" He gives her his name, but she's confused because it sounds so different than the name she heard before (duh.) She figures this out, looks over at me and asks me my name again. I give it to her and explain what's on the cake. She turns to another employee and says "we're missing a cake." The employee turns to me and says excitedly, "we'll find it. Don't freak out!" Ummm, I wasn't about to freak out. It's a cake. If you don't have it, I can go to Jewel and have them write happy birthday on one of their cakes. No problem. I'm just standing there confused and they continue to look for the cake. I explain what's on it. Turns out the cake just hadn't been put in a box yet. It's right in front of them. They boxed it up, I paid and was off. The cake tasted good, but the staff was a little uppity. Calm yourselves.

I'm still new to the area, but have been to Dinkel's several times because a) I'm a sucker for baked goods and b) it's closer than Whole Foods. Which could translate to laziness. Whatever. I've never been blown away by anything I've had there, but this weekend was really the worst so far. This weekend I tried the egg-pastry thing they call a "burglaur" that looks delicious on the website. Like a quiche on breaded steroids. When my bf and I got home with meat and veg versions (his and hers), I found a dry biscuit filled with red and green peppers bits and a slight hint of egg white. No gooey egg center (which he got in his meat version), no cheese covered tastiness, no actual vegetables to speak of (I don't count peppers, but that's just a personal thing). The whole thing was hard, dry, and flavorless except for the overpowering pepper. I finally just fried up an egg and threw it on top, so at least it would taste like something other than red pepper. The burglaur experiment not withstanding, the service has always been a bit odd. I'm not exaggerating that we've waited for 10 minutes for someone to simply fill up a cup of iced coffee... when we were the only people in there, and the iced coffee was ten feet away from the register. All of the counter people have been very nice, but no one is ever in a real hurry to serve you. Probably the worst is the inconsistent use of the number system for the customers on line. Sometimes they use them, sometimes they don't. I've definitely been there, dutifully holding a number that turned out to be unnecessary. And I've seen a few times where they randomly decide to start using the numbers to keep track of customers without accounting for the few people who have been there for a while and were able to manage the difficulty of standing in a straight line. I'll probably be back (see that "lazy" thing from before) and it will probably be fine. But I'm in no rush.

We haven't really tasted their baked goods as of yet, other than a loaf of bread, but they make sandwiches for lunch and those are great. We just moved nearby and have been over for them several times already. The sandwiches come with a pickle and chips and are a good size. The bread they are on is delicious and the various sandwiches they offer are pretty typical, but with high quality ingredients. The service is also excellent. Both the people at the register and the cooks who bring out the food are friendly and helpful. Also, their bread is very reasonably priced to buy a loaf of and is very good.

A billion stars!!!! Thank you so much for satisfying my several month search for an apple cider doughnut. I was a woman, on a mission, and you delivered. Oh the heaven that is the apple cider doughnut. Of course, I was not so possessed that I didn't sneak a peek at the other delights in the glass case. Yum. I do believe I will be back.

This review is for the donuts only. I have yet to try anything else, but it all looks incredibly delish! I've tried several types of donuts at Dinkel's - jelly-filled, old-fashioned, cinnamon rolls, apple cider, pumpkin, glazed and all have met or exceeded my expectations, but NOTHING, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING beats the chocolate-covered cake donuts! They are soft, moist and almost always have an insane amount of chocolate frosting, which is to-die-for. This is my go-to donut 95% of the time. Sometimes I feel like I should venutre outside the box, but it's just so hard to pass up the unbelievable goodness that is the chocolate-covered cake donut. The line on Saturday and Sunday mornings can be daunting at times, but this donut is worth the wait. I'm not going to lie, I'm easily irritated and have encounted many an annoying person/family while waiting my turn at the counter, but I continue to go back because nothing can satisfy my donut craving the way Dinkel's can. I even got my sister hooked on them. She's quite the fan of donuts in general and isn't overly picky, but she agrees, these are the best. She lives in the burbs so I take a dozen out to her when I go to visit. Most of the cake donuts can be frozen successfully. I would say that you shouldn't keep them in the freezer for much more than a month, but I doubt they'll last that long anyway. If you think you aren't a fan of cake donuts, just try one chocolate-covered donut from Dinkel's. I really think this donut will change your life! Okay, that's probably exaggerating a bit, but I dare you not to like it.

There's a reason why Dinkel's has been around since the beginning of Chicago baking time (I'm exaggerating, but still!) Let these menu items make you drool - Spinach and cheese croissants - MAPLE BACON DOUGHNUTS - Brownie Torte Cake (special order) Those are the last three things I ordered from Dinkel's, but let's just say I could have bought out the store with their selection of cakes, strudels, cookies and pastries. Spinach and cheese croissants are one of the most well-known items to buy here, so it's an obvious recommendation. The maple bacon doughnut was made as a cake doughnut rather than glazed doughnut. It posed a great texture and taste contrast to the maple frosting and soft, salty bacon. The brownie torte cake is a dream for your brownie loving friend celebrating their birthday. (Two years in a row, and my friend is still not tired of me ordering it for him!) Dinkel's also has seating where it's a great place to bring your family for a Saturday breakfast. It seems like they also have a selection of specialty coffees and local newspapers in case you would like to stay. But for those of you who are picking up orders, fear not: there is a 15 minute car standing zone across the street.

Thank goodness this bakery is not right next to where I live, otherwise I'd be so round you'd have to roll me down the street. This bakery has so many options. I walked in and didnt know where to start! The very first thing I needed to do was pull a number. If ever you come here, you NEED to do this, otherwise you will never be served. Even if you want to buy something thats already prepared, you cannot go to someone to pay and walk out quickly. You need to wait. I'd make one suggestion for them to hire someone to work the cashier full time to accommodate those in a rush looking to pop in and out, especially during the holiday season. I tried their pumpkin pie. With pumpkin pies, they are usually hit or miss with me. Dinkel's pumpkin pie was a HIT!!!! Great texture and full of sweetness. The crust was perfect. I also tried their cherry turnover. Wow. Very delicious!! Can be a bit on the greasy side after you re-heat it, but otherwise lots of cherry filling and sugar sprinkled on top. YUM! We purchased a chocolate rum cake. I'm a fan of chocolate but not of alcohol, but I tried a piece anyway just to taste. I could taste a little bit of the rum. If you like rum and chocolate, this may be the cake for you. It wasnt for me though. I also got the apple cupcake with caramel frosting. It was only ok. I couldnt really taste much of the caramel and the cake mixture was a bit on the dry side. I really wanted to try everything else Dinkel had to offer, but we didnt have the time! I will have to come back again to explore some more!

Living by this place is dangerous. For the sake of my waistline, I'm just glad that they are usually closed by the time I'm home from work. While I know that everyone knows about Dinkel's donuts, I think it's important to note the quality of their other items. We recently tried their sandwiches, and were surprisingly blown away. I know "blown away" is a bit extreme for a sandwich, but seriously it was so good. Their other pastries are fantastic and I'm sure their special occasion cakes are great - some of the ones they have displayed by the window are beautiful!

We ordered our wedding cake from Dinkel's and can't say enough about how easy it was and how perfect our cake was. We didn't do a tasting because I knew I wanted a simple, traditional, white wedding cake - no fruit filling, no crazy flavors. Plus, we were confident in Dinkel's - they've been doing this forever. The cake was delivered on time. It was beautiful (I picked a design from their site). The price was very reasonable. Most importantly, it was delicious. I can't wait to pull that puppy out of the freezer in a year!

While the cakes and treats are great, the service is so abysmal that it is not with the trouble. I walked out after waiting 15 minutes trying to order my daughter's birthday cake. The average age of the employees was about 18, with no one an apparent manager. Seriously, Dinkel's, your people need some adult supervision. I'll buy my cakes elsewhere for now.

Tuesday is buy one get one free cupcakes. Need I say more? I've gotten really good at making my library books due on Tuesdays to have an excuse to be close by. The past two weeks I've gotten the last two red velvet cupcakes, they're heaven. My boyfriend really likes their donuts too, I'm pretty sure he's had every flavor but he prefers the cinnamon, plain and glazed. He wasn't too big of a fan of the chocolate, he found it too oily on the inside. He also wasn't too big of a fan of their bearclaw. I've had their sample brownies from the counter and wasn't too big a fan but I think that was just a personal thing. I like fudge brownies bordering on undercooked and I think theirs are closer to cake brownies. Also, the frozen cheesecake is delicious! It's the Saturday special and I got one for a work party; it was a huge hit! They have a $10 minimum on credit cards which can be lame because I usually don't have cash on me. This means I either have to plan ahead or buy more cupcakes!

I can't help it, but every time I hear the name of this place, it reminds me of one of those made up words parents teach their kids. You know, so they sound precocious when they announce their need to use the bathroom, like "mommy, I have to dinkel." (No offense intended Dinkel family) Anyway, I popped into Dinkel's to spend my $15 Groupon, which reminded me a lot of the little bakeries my mom dragged me to as a kid for cakes, rolls, etc. There is a long L-shaped glass bakery case full of items to ooh and ahhh over, just don't forget to grab a number from the little machine by the door. Most of the bakeries I frequented as a kid didn't have the seating Dinkel's does; it's nice that you don't have to enjoy your treats in your car, like you should be ashamed of them or something. Seeing as this is old-school and not a new, trendy bakery, my $15 stretched pretty far. Coming between Monday and Thursday my Groupon also afforded me 3 free danishes! For just under $20, I ended up with: * 3 almond "danish" things * 2 red velvet cupcakes * 6 apple cider donuts (on special that day) * 1 loaf of butter crust bread * 1 box of walnut chocolate chip cookies Those little almond dealies, almost like mini bear claws, and the homemade bread were fantastic. Unfortunately, the cupcakes weren't. At just under $3, they are priced comparably to basic cupcakes at Sweet Mandy B's or Molly's, but in terms of taste they can't hold a candle to either. I liked the frosting, plenty of it and not too sour, but I found the cake portion to be on the dry side and lacking flavor. I wasn't wild about the donuts either, maybe freezing and thawing them did something to the flavor; they were moist, but a bit bland for my liking. I probably should've gone with my gut and gotten chocolate ones. The cookies were good, but not what I would consider exceptional. Service was cordial, no idle chit chat here. Since it was my first time some steering might have been nice ("we're known for these," "these are my favorites," etc.), but the guy next to me in line did a pretty good job. Bottom line: 3.5 stars, I'd come back for some staples like coffecakes, danishes and bread, but probably skip the rest.

Dinkels is your grandma. It's dependable, inviting, lovable and the little old candies on the bottom of the purse scare me but I really like lemon drops! I always get the cookies with the chocolate fudge and a pecan in the middle of a shortbread cookie. They' re sold by the pound and oh so delicious. I always try other items but, nothing ever makes me do a double take. One day, I vow to get up on a Saturday early and go buy a dozen donuts. When that day comes, watch out!

A charming old school bakery. I've made several trips here and have enjoyed their cinnamon rolls, cupcakes (a tad dry), pastries, and most recently some really cute little mini-cakes (apricot cream and a black forest). I am leaving the review at 2 stars because of a bad experience with a container of powdered hot chocolate mix I purchased on one of the visits a long time ago. On a whim, I picked up one of their containers of the hot chocolate mix and thought, that looks good, I could use some... so I bought it. About a week or so later, I decided to make some. I scooped some of the choco mix into a mug, boiled some water and poured over the mix. After stirring, I noticed many little black bits floating to the top - what's that, chocolate bits? Nope.. it was some kind of little bugs. I was horrified - goose bumps, hair-raising grossed. out. I looked into the container and poked around a bit, and sure enough, I could see some movement and more little bug bodies in there - tossed it, and took a long hiatus from Dinkel's because I couldn't stand the thought of getting anything else from there after this incident. After a good long break, over a year, I returned. I figured I'd enjoyed the other things I purchased there, and maybe the buggy chocolate mix was just a bad / old batch? I don't know... I still don't frequent the place, but the last items I got (the adorable mini-cakes) were really good.

I grew up going here as a kid, but it always disappoints me now. I think the main problem is that they operate in complete chaos. When you couple that with the fact that they happen to have super-annoying patrons (probably due to the fact that they have free samples ready for the taking of any greedy old lady), it's daunting to figure out when you are going to get your turn in line. I have been able to feel my blood pressure rise once I've entered the store and I try to decide where to best stand so that I can actually get taken care of when it's my turn. It's stressful when it shouldn't be, and I suggest they have a clear line defined, with a clear strategy of how to get through it. I stopped here last Christmas and this Thanksgiving upon the request of my host, but I have since informed her I WILL NOT be going back. Most importantly, despite the fact that I pre-ordered a pie from them, I showed up to find that they could not find it. Luckily, I arrived early enough to get the last one in the case, but I would have been outraged if I had traveled all that way and they had been out -- I was already quite unhappy that I was getting the pie in the case that had probably been touched a million times. I also feel that they are a bit overpriced for what they are. Needless to say, I'll probably be staying away despite my fond memories of being treated to cookies here as a child.

You are wonderful. You made me the most awesomest, fantabulous birthday cake with Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs on it when I was 7 years old. I am now 28. Yes, my birthday cake was that memorable. But seriously, Dinkel's is wonderful - and they've been a family-owned Chicago staple since 1922! All the more reason to support them :-)

I've gotten cake here for YEARS. (I think the majority of my childhood birthday cakes were from here as well). The cakes are moist and wonderfully delicious. I enjoy their white cake with custard and strawberries in the center. Easy icing. When looking for a wedding cake, I tried out all of the fancy over-priced cake artists I found online. My husband, our parents, and I went to multiple tastings. The cakes were all too dry, too sweet, too bland, etc. I found that I was continually comparing the wedding cakes to Dinkel's. So... I called them. To my surprise, they also did wedding cakes. I gave them the photo of the cake I wanted and told them my budget. They told me how to make it work. We tried out a few different icings with three cakes (much less overwhelming than the other places we'd been to). And then we were all set! Delivery was flawless. I provided them with contact information for the woman handling setup at the reception site. They set up the cake and left. I never actually saw them--- but we had SO many complements on our cake. I love Dinkels. I will continue to go out of my way to get special occasion cakes from them.

The iced cookies? Still cracklike and now I've discovered another addiction the pecan danish. Seriously yummy. I think it's really good that I don't live closer to Dinkel's. I haven't actually been to Dinkel's but I have had a vendor come bring Dinkel's to bribe us. So as this guy is giving the 411 on his company. He starts hyping up Dinkel's. He is saying that this is the ONLY bakery he goes to yada-yada-yada. So I am thinking in my head that this is one of those new trendy bakeries with delicious delicacies. So the guy leaves and I bring it into the office and try it. I am glad I got some doughnut with my block of sugar. I hope they realize that sugar is good but not when you shovel it on to things in massive amounts. A little goes a long way. Everyone thought the same and the rest of the sugar with a splash of doughnut sat in the office until I had the heart to throw it away. This was a fail when it walked into my office and I will not be making this a stop on the Lulu (me) train. Ps. I just got the world's rudest comment from the owner. Shows their lack of customer service. I was thinking of giving this place another shot but I am going to take a pass thanks to you. *sarcastic claps*

I was really hoping to write a rave review after serving my Dinkels's wedding cake this upcoming wedding this Saturday. Unfortunately, Dinkels's will no longer be making my cake, and I can't recommend Dinkel's to other brides. The cake tasting was easy to schedule, and the woman who served us was very accommodating. My fiancée and I tried a variety of flavored and fillings, all pretty decent. We settled on some flavors and cake size, and went back a few weeks later in early spring to show the woman our design ideas. We paid in full, confirmed our date and venue for delivery. All was well. Flash forward to two weeks ago, three weeks before our wedding. We got a call from our wedding coordinator that Dinkel's was not complying with the event insurance of our venue and that it was a possibility that Dinkel's would no longer be making our cake. She would keep us posted. A week later. Two weeks before the wedding. Our coordinator called again, all was well. Dinkel's would comply and we would have our cake. Great! Monday. Less than a week before the wedding. The woman at Dinkel's called. She asked where we wanted our refund check sent. No explanation, no apology. The owner, Mr. Dinkel, was not going to comply with the event insurance, end of story. We went into Dinkel's this morning to collect our refund and hopefully speak to Mr. Dinkel. Instead, Dinkel sat in his office in the back and sent the poor counter girl back and forth three times to relay messages to us (not one of them being an apology). We were floored by the poor customer service, and made sure that that message was relayed to Mr. Dinkel. Dinkel's has been doing business in Chicago for 90 years and has delivered to my venue in the past. I'm not sure what the issue was, and I guess I'll never know. I'm sure the baked goods are fine, but I can't recommend Dinkel's for wedding cakes, or a place to receive decent customer service.

I miss the bakeries of the olden days. They make the best European cakes I've ever had. They have beautiful stollens and the powdered sugar! ooh, the powered sugar is exactly what makes me think of Christmas time. Their bakery case in itself is a beauty. There are so many cakes and doughnuts, and pies galore, it makes me dizzy with contemplation. I remember the days when they had aniseed coffee cakes back in the day. Coffee cake with coffee and a little cream would have been awesome on a cold day like today. The cakes are not too sweet, the service is always great and walking in is just pure nostalgia. There's a reason why a stretch of Lincoln Ave. is named Dinkel Ave.

Had their "famous" apple cider donut. Maybe I'm weird, but I didn't like it, I don't get the hype. To me it barely tasted like apple and there was a tangy, sour taste to it, sorta like their sour cream old fashioned donut. It really overshadowed the flavor of the donut. The only thing I liked about it was the slight crunch on the outside. Still searching for good donuts in Lakeview, anyone know of a good place?

While driving up Lincoln Ave at lunch time I was looking for a bite to eat. As I passed Dinkel's I noticed the window sign that read "We Make Sandwiches". I stopped and got a 1/2 sandwich/ soup combo of a BLT and Zesty Tomato Soup. They were both fantastic and way better than any of the over salted specialties I've eaten at Panera. I am looking forward to another visit soon.

Reminds me a lot of what a bakery was like when I was a kid - no nonsense, big cases filled with a bunch of different kinds of the almost same butter cookie and pastries that are some kind of fruity filled claw or snail or something. Reminds me a lot in fact of Merritt Bakery back in Oakland by the lake, which is nice. They bake things well. Their Bismark doughnut (wait, is that fried, not baked, dunno....) is very good, especially because of how not sweet it is. I actually hate doughnuts usually, although I fully accept that I eat an awful lot of them for somebody who "hates" them soooo much.....Anyway, it has some tasty and thick chocolately goop on the top and is filled with creamy goop, and the dough is nicely oily, but it wasn't at all a sugar bomb - I'd actually call it mildly sweet. You know, for a doughnut. I had a wonderful savory pastry here that was kind of like a bready popover filled with a whole egg that I think cooks inside during the baking, with spinach, cheddar cheese also inside and like four strips of bacon laid across the top. It's beautiful and when you break it open it almost looks like a Turducken of breakfastiness - quite lovely looking. Tastewise, I liked the dough, the very crispy bacon and the both crispy and gooey textures of the cheese. The whole hard egg yolk in the middle was a little off-putting and I didn't like the spinach very much, only because it tasted a lot like pesto and I hate pesto - if you like pesto though, you'd probably be in love. All of the things were fairly inexpensive - that giant breakfast bomb was like $3.50 or so. It's pretty much a three star bakery for me, but it gets a four because of the broad that took my order. When I asked what something was and she said "That's a piece of cake." it kind of tickled me. I love that kind of no bullshit shit.

I like Dinkel's a lot. Its really old school and there's a great variety. It might be a llllliiittttllllleeee pricey, but the quality is high. The people who work there are always really friendly and again, everything I've had has been wonderful. Here's the problem: it gets crowded. They have a number system, but they just don't use it consistently. I wish they would. As customers, its awkward being in a waiting area of 10 people and having an associate say, "who's next?" as everyone kinda looks at each other. So often there's a line and someone (me usually, cause I'm nice) gets jumped in front of when they don't use the system. People sometimes will just walk out when that happens. But, again, a great bakery. When they get the procedure down for waiting on people in the order they came in, I'll bump em up to 5 stars.

My booty hates me right now. I "shared" a sour cream doughnut, apple cider doughnut, apricot danish & chocolate glazed long john this morning at Dinkel's. All of those things totaled to less than $6!!!! That's seriously amazing. I don't know what's up with all of the service issues that a lot of people on here talk about. The girl that helped us was very patient and most helpful, even when I had her running to the other end of the store getting a cupcake at the last second. Awesome sour cream doughnuts! Kinda crisp on the outside, which is a must have quality :) So good. I'm definitely coming back for more doughnuts....just don't tell my booty that.

I don't like Dinkel's ... but not enough to only give it one star. I think that House of Cakes on Canfield is better by a lot. The people at Dinkel's are not very nice either.. and I don't like that you have to spend $10 min to use a card... bc I just feel thats a lot for a place that has like 69 cent donuts. I do like the cheese bearclaw and the almond bearclaw... those are pretty good. I would like to point out that there is a area under construction to the right of Dinkel's with a sign that says "Dinkel's Cafe coming soon"... it's been like 2 years. Sooo, is it going to be here soon or what? I am not saying I am waiting, I am just saying... take down the sign.

Chocolate Donuts! Dinkel's Bakery makes great chocolate donuts. If you're lucky enough to get Dinkel's chocolate donuts when they're warm, you'll bite into a crispy, fluffy, firm(firm not crumbly) cake donut iced with a thick, gooey, chocolate, not a thin icing. When they're not freshly warm, they are still incredibly delicious. Their other items are good too, but go there for the chocolate donuts especially. Other bakeries around town make wonderful things, but no one makes a better chocolate donut than Dinkel's. I had a cup of the Falstaff coffee at Dinkel's recently. It is the best coffee I have ever tasted. So I looked into it, and found that it is Metropolis Coffee Company's Falstaff Winter Blend. Winter Blend?! I'd drink it in July! I've got to get more of that stuff! Though the staff is friendly and efficient, their focus does wane at times(the self-serve coffee often runs low...). But they keep things moving with smooth aplomb, and a smile. 15 minute "Free Parking" is available on both sides of Lincoln Avenue; just leave your "hazards" flashing.

An old-school Chicago bakery that represents exactly what a good bakery should be. While many bakeries in Chicago seem to only specialize in certain items, Dinkel's is fully stocked with all the house-made goodies you'd expect to find in a well stocked bakery. Stop in on a weekend morning and pick up a few of their delicious cake doughnuts and a cup 'o joe and you won't be disappointed. My wife is partial to cake doughnuts, while I all too often find them to be dense and dry; but Dinkel's cake doughnuts just may make me a convert. Biting through the nicely fried outer crust you'll find a pleasantly light and fluffy cake interior. My favorites were the maple glazed doughnut with bits of real bacon. For those who enjoy a savory breakfast the salty smokiness of the bacon offers a nice balance to the intensely flavored maple glaze. When autumn arrives you can enjoy the subtle flavors of their apple cider doughnuts that are rolled in cinnamon sugar. A nice treat that you can rarely find done well outside of an apple orchard. Their pretzel rolls can also transform an otherwise normal sandwich or burger. Unlike many bakeries that just serve bland coffee as an afterthought, Dinkel's serves up a selection of fair trade brews from local roaster, Asado. One of my pet peeves from bakeries is when none of their doughnuts are labeled. I don't want to have to guess if that long john is filled or what flavor that glaze is, thankfully here each tray of doughnuts comes with a small sign that leaves the guessing-game out of ordering.

I love the end result of my experience. The cookies and cakes are amazing! However, the service is something to be left desired. I'm not sure if I caught everyone on a bad day or what. When I arrived at 8.05 to pick up my order for 8 am they couldn't find my order and sent someone upstairs to "get it". I waited around for 15 minutes (i told them i had a presentation that started at 9 so i was in a hurray) with no one in site with my order. NO ONE seemed to think that was a big deal. Once the girl that went upstairs came back down she was empty handed. I asked where my order was and said, "Oh we still have to package i.t" Okay, that's fine then get moving on would think. She was moving as fast as a Sunday Driver....with no smile on her face, no sorry about this, nothing. I was Shocked!!! Customer Service is very important to me and as a returning customer I'm now going to try a different bakery :(

Every single thing I have ever had here has been delicious! I live a bit too close for comfort and get off the bus from work just half a block away, so it's dangerous! Staff is friendly and they are always willing to offer suggestions or tell you about what they've got. Everything from the pretzel bread, to the cookies and cupcakes. This is a true Chicago treasure! Don't miss it.

mmmmmmmmmmmm. We have dinkels donuts at work every day...well, we have some version of donuts every day, and dinkels are the obvious front-runner. Sour cream glazed, chocolate frosting, cinnamon sugar, bearclaws, and other pastries. I've never had anything else there so this review is for donuts only...but they are fresh and tempting and it is an everyday battle not to have one. One I almost always lose...

My coworker has been telling me about this place for years. After having brunch nearby, we finally had a chance to check this place out. First off, the service was really friendly, she saw us trying the samples and directed us to where we could find more. The butter cookies we tried were ridiculous. We'll have to pick some up the next time we're here. Chocolate donuts and the cherry danish we picked up were delicious. Definitely a good recommendation from my buddy.

A bakery that I've heard so much about (and got featured via Groupon a few months ago), I decided that I wanted to give this place a try. Not having done my research in advance, I haphazardly ordered the following items (which I didn't get a chance to eat until about 16 hours later): Cherry turnover - Wow. Nice flaky texture, good amount of filling, this was an excellent cherry turnover. I'd be happy to pick these up everytime I swing by. Apple and raspberry danish - Not bad... a little dense for my taste, the flavors were good, but nothing that stood out. Blueberry Muffin - A good muffin. Appropriately dense and cakey, not quite enough blueberry IMHO, but respectable. Carrot cake cupcake - I didn't get a chance to try this... which is either a blessing or a curse since I"m such a carrot cake fanatic... next time perhaps? Verdict: A-OK. Staff was fairly disinterested in incoming customers and took us approaching the counter with obvious intent to get any reaction of a "can I help you" from them. Food was average, though from what I'm seeing, Yelpers are raving about their donuts, not their other bakery items. If I make my way back here again, I'll just have to try some more and update.

I had great service from 2 very friendly and helpful associates around 10:30 this morning. They were polite despite being bombarded with very rude, spoiled, entitled lincoln park moms, cranky old people and one particular foreign C-rag that probably hasnt been internally happy or satisfied with her life to the point where she has to fill it with trivial stops in the morning just so she wont remember her horrible nights in europe where she worked as a lady of the night. All in all I was very happy with these friendly faces and impressed they can deal with such garbage and still provide such great service.

This is the type of place your grandma would take you as a kid when she had to bribe you: a day's worth of cooperation in exchange for a berliner or a long john. Dinkel's is located in a convenient central location to meet up with buddies before a weekend breakfast. It's also a prime place to get a box of premium old-fashioned donuts for coworkers. Their donut box wrapping device is probably an antique - it operates with a certain dangerous, 1950s mechanical charm, like an old contraption in high school industrial tech classroom - and is impressive to watch in action.

DINKIES!!!!!!! Well that's what we call it anyway. I love this bakery. I used to live near another bakery and I thought I had it made....but then I moved near Dinkels. Super cheap, wide variety, and everything I have had so far is delicious. We had a birthday cake made here for a friend, the chocolate brownie torte, and it was to die for. The staff is helpful and patient and I can't WAIT for them to open up the Dinkels Cafe next door to the bakery!

This bakery has been open and in the same location since 1922 and there is a reason for that, they simply make great food. They are famous for their danishes and have a great ham sandwich on a pretzel bun, I highly recommend both. Dinkel's buys all their deli meat from The Paulina Meat Market, right down the street. The building is always very clean and probably doesn't look much different from the way it did when it opened 90 years ago. Try it out, you wont be disappointed.

Wonderful old world bakery. I'm a 4 th generation Dinkles lover. Although I no longer live anywhere near Dinkles I make my annual Christmas run for pastries and cookies for my family. This bakery makes wonderful German stollen( a yeast dried fruit filled cake) at Christmas. I'm really glad to see the bakery has remained unchanged. Bakeries are a dying business with the Jewels and Costco's of the world taking over. Be sure to support this bakery. Even if you don't live in the area they have a great website you can order from.

After sampling wedding cakes with steep prices at various Chicago bakeries, my husband and I scouted out Dinkel's on a friend's recommendation. Their wedding cakes were remarkably MOIST and the whipped creams HEAVENLY. They had the best tasting wedding cakes we had tried but definitely not the most artfully designed. We opted for a 3 tier cake with different layers: white cake with hazelnut whip and wedding cake with vanilla whip along with an accompanying sheet cake for our 125 guests. The price of the cake came in at less than half of the pricier, dry but beautifully-decorated cakes. We knew we had to keep the details simple, so we opted for a beautifully piped buttercream cake (providing them with a Martha Stewart image and color swatches as requested). The only detail was a repeated piped petal in blush and cream. Simple, we thought. ( marthastewartweddings.co… ) We were shocked when we walked into our wedding reception venue to take photos before our guests arrived to see a neon orange piped cake in clumsier details than the one we had provided. It was the only mishap during the day - so we didn't sweat it. We just asked for the cake to be sent to the kitchen. We skipped our cake cutting photo op. As scarily orange as it was - the cake was delicious and with mood lighting no one could make out the details in their slice. We received many compliments including "best wedding cake I've ever had." Were we to do it again - we'd probably still go to them for our wedding cake. A wedding cake should be delicious and it was. Just know it might not look as beautiful as you hoped.

I love this place. I picked up 2 dozens packis & also dozen of donuts yesterday . The chocolate donuts are the best. This bakery been around since 1922 family run so they know what they are doing. If you do go here I recommend go early right when open not only is bread & all the goodies just coming out of the oven, parking is not a problem. Later on in the day parking & traffic can be a challenge. Although Dinkels is so worth it. I have had almost everything at Dinkels over the years & always top qualty everytime! :)

There is something about a city bakery that the 'burbs bakeries just don't have. Which is why, I'll make the pilgrimage to Lincoln Ave and visit Dinkels. Dinkels..I (heart) you period. My two staples at Dinkel's....the inch thick cream cheese coffee cake and the big ass pretzels. Its well worth the trip but its always hard to keep your hands off the goods til you get home. If you want to one up someone on bringing a dessert, coffee cake or any other sweet, make the trip to Dinkel's and you'll be a winner...

I am on the Great Chicago Donut Hunt at the moment. I don't want mass produced shit, I want handmade, delicious donuts. I started at Dinkels. It was a shitty, rainy Sunday and I walked into Dinkels (this is what heaven must smell like). I got 2 Old Fashioned donuts - one for me and one for my husband. It was only $2.25, which isn't bad at all. Carried 'em around and saved them for later that night. They were slightly stale from being carried around all day, which is totally on me. I am aware donuts are best fresh. The flavors were really good - I love a serious old fashioned. The inside was fluffy and the outside had a slight crispiness to it. The glaze was sweet and went well with the donut. My husband wasn't amused that I only brought home two donuts, next Dinkels visit will have to be a bigger run. Good stuff. I want to sample their cake donuts next.

If you drove by the corner of Lincoln and Paulina this morning and saw a sweaty, disheveled girl holding a huge Dinkel's bag and literally licking her fingers while waiting for the bus...that was me. But I'm getting ahead of myself. I went to Dinkel's in hopes of finding the perfect coffee cake for my boyfriend's birthday breakfast (he loves coffee cake, obvi). So I trekked the mile and a half up there from the Fullerton & Lincoln vicinity this morning before work. When you first walk into the store, it's a bit chaotic. Fridges and freezers of random stuff to the left, cookies and cakes to the front, and breakfast pastries to your right. Much bigger than I anticipated, and it even has a little eating room off to the side. I stumbled around for a while, confused by the lack of signage and somewhat overwhelming and confusing display cases. But I'm over it. The woman who finally helped me was a bit curt, and apparently has an aversion towards elaboration when it comes to answering questions. But I'm over that too. I got over all of it the minute I shoved a delightfully iced piece of donut heaven into my mouth just steps outside the store. OMG, THE BEST donut I have EVER had. No joke. Amazing. And yes, I realize I came for coffee cake, and now the story has me chowing down on a donut...but if you're strong willed enough to pass up fresh amazing donuts, well, I pitty you cause you're missing out. I'll provide an update on the coffee cake tomorrow after I eat it...but I anticipate good things!

Cutest Easter cookies ever! I like going to Dinkel's for a cookie every once and awhile, although I don't think I would ever get their other cake-type desserts. Just not my thing. The bunny cookie I got recently was HUGE and seemed more reasonably priced at $2.50. Very buttery, and the icing was great. If you're craving a good sugar cookie, I'd go back to Dinkel's.

My boss periodically brings in baked goods for the entire office (there are 100 of us - he's very generous). I never paid attention to where they were from. Periodically people would see the box and say things like "oh Dinkel's! My favorite!", but I'm not a bakery frequenter, so I didn't take note. Naturally it wasn't long before I was in need of a bakery to order cupcakes for a birthday. Naturally I called up Dinkel's. Their cupcakes are huge and moist and the frosting is to die for. I'm not a huge sweets person, but I can appreciate a good dessert. I've ordered from them several times for work as well. I work in marketing and when we land a new client, we like to get their logo printed on a cake to celebrate. You can email Dinkel's a .jpg and have your cake the next day. If you want a logo (100% edible) on the cake you have to get white butter cream frosting, but you aren't limited on cake flavors or fillings. Their cakes never disappoint, and when people see the Dinkel's boxes, no matter what's inside, their mouths start to water.

I've been going to Dinkel's for years - have a doughnut fix? Need a coffee cake? Need a birthday cake? All signs point to Dinkel's for good quality bakery goods. Their chocolate doughnut is fantastic! Always soft and the chocolate topping is so rich and sweet - absolutely amazing! It's a tribute to Dinkel's that they have maintained their quality over the years and it's nice to know that you can rely on finding good food and good service at a great price!

It was all right, though not as good as the Swedish Bakery in Andersonville. What makes both places a little weird though is that the employees always seem so harried and strangely uptight as though these places are run by some obscure cult of Scandinavian Calvinists. I guess I like Rudy's in Roscoe Village because the baked goods are really good and the people are friendly. Anyway, I was here once last summer and we tried a little of everything. It was good but nothing wowed me the way stuff has wowed me at Rudy's or the Swedish Bakery. The tension in the air peaked as we were sitting at a table gorging ourselves and heard the strained voice of a hysterical woman chewing out one of her employees. What, do you suppose, was this employee's mortal sin? This ungrateful wench didn't take her break early enough in the day because she thought they were too busy. Are you kidding me? Be nice to your employees, people. Atmosphere matters. Especially if you're going somewhere to indulge yourself.

I absolutely love Dinkel's!! The donuts are great, cheesecakes, cupcakes, breads, even the day old breads are phenomenal! My favorite is the cheese flaky, so good! This is one place my parents always have to stop in when then come into town. Everything is homemade and prices are decent, they also have specials everyday like buy 1 cupcake get 1 free, and you can't beat that.

I give you a 4 star because your meat and potatoes approach (is this the wrong analogy?) to baking hasn't changed in the 1,734 years you've been in business. You are a neighborhood mainstay and I like the homegrown flair you add to your cookies (which I like) and your cakes. But we need to talk about taste. I think people want more butter and more sugar. I'm just saying. Sometimes when I come in and get a cookie, it seems like it's been in the front display about a day too long. Your service isn't great at the counter either. It takes a long time to get anything you'd like. But I'm patient so it doesn't bother me, i just am always surrounded by people who seem tense. Like they need their sugar immediately. You're a business that has been around forever. You do good work and people like you. In my book, that shows you deserve our business.

The only thing I've ever had here are the chocolate donuts. I found absolute perfection in that donut. Those donuts are the reason I go to Dinkel's. I was there once and they had run out of them, and I left empty handed. I'd rather have nothing for my sweet tooth than not get my hands on the chocolate donut. What if I only had space in my belly for 100 baked goods and I had 99 chocolate donuts from Dinkel's and 1 cookie from Dinkels and I didn't like the cookie quite as much as I liked the donut? That would be really sad. I could eat 100 of these and it would seem like a pity to waste an inch of belly space on something other than their chocolate donut. It is simply the BEST. Maybe one day I'll try some other baked good from Dinkel's.But for now, I am content with the perfect chocolate donut.

My brother and his fiancee live right across the street from Dinkle's and If I had a the opportunity to live in Chicago, I'd live right across from Dinkle's as well. We own donut shops in Dallas so speaking as a donut shop expert, these donuts are good...REAL GOOD. I only had one donut and a few selected baked goods (cheese flakey and some others) and wow...The cashier recommended the chocolate cake donut saying that alot of customers enjoy it. Oh, and I did enjoy it... I don't know if enjoy is a good word for it... I think I fell in love with it. Can you fall in love with a donut? yes,yes you can.

If you love canolis, go to Dinkels. If you love old bakeries your grandma used to take you to when you went to visit her downtown and she would let you pick out the butter cookies with the plastic looking frosting dots on them, go to Dinkels. My dad and I who are canoli afficionados (sp?) have both agreed this place is the hands down winner. Cupcakes are seriously like small cakes. I could feed probably four people with one. It was good but I would give all cupcakes up for more canolis. Did I mention how amazing they were?

This is one old-school bakery and it's been around this long for a good reason. I've only tried the donuts here, but let me tell you, they are well worth a trip. For a not-too-sweet choice, their cake donuts (plain or lightly dusted with powdered sugar) are simply wonderful and their old fashioned sour cream is pretty yummy, too (though a bit too much sugary glaze for my taste). Very fresh! These guys just make Dunkin' look sad. I also once got a glazed long john and it wasn't my favorite as it was a little on the dry side and didn't hold a candle to those from my favorite bakery back home. Sometimes my partner brings one for me as a little pick-me-up surprise and it is always a welcome sight. I would recommend sticking to the cake donuts, but as we all know, donut preference is a highly personal matter!

I used to live down the street from Dinkel's when I was in Chicago, and I went there at least once a week. I cry a little each time I think about it...yep, I miss it that much! I consider myself a connoisseur of donuts, and Dinkel's makes the world's best donuts. They have the yummiest Boston Creme donut ever to be put on this planet!!! Their cinnamon rolls are pretty amazing too. If you're in Chi-town around Thanksgiving time, you absolutely MUST pick up a pumpkin pie...or two...WOW.

Here's why I love Dinkel's, aside from that its interior reminds me of being a kid and it's a Chicago institution: Last week I called to see if they had open-face plum tarts, as my mom asked for one for her birthday cake. They said they had plum slices but not a whole tart. I asked if they could make one specially. They said yes, no problem. It tasted delicious, looked like something out of Bon Appetit, and cost less than $10. (The pretzel roll and rye-wheat baguette were pretty tasty, too.) Dank-els indeed.

The next time you see me, I may be bouncing off the walls due to the sugar I've just consumed. I've been wanting to try Dinkel's for a while and when Groupon recently offered up a $5 deal for $15 worth of goodies, I saw my motivation. Ginger snaps, smiley face cookies, muffins, cakes, danishes, turnovers, and on and on. Did I mention ginger snaps? It wasn't very busy on my visit and I received A+, friendly service. I gather that this is the norm, no matter how busy they are. If you're driving, there's convenient parking right out front, perfect for a stop and go. Skip the pay boxes and look for the special spots! While it won't be my go-to bakery, I'll be back in again sometime. They have ginger snaps, ya know.

It's no wonder why Dinkel's has been in business since 1922. After I walked inside, I got this nostalgic, old-time coffee shop feeling, almost like I went back in time to another decade. The smell of fresh pastries and coffee permeated in the air and stayed with me even when I left. They have a wide selection of pastries: cookies, doughnuts, danishes (apple & cheese is my fave), kolackys...you name it, they probably have it. The staff treats you like they have known you for ages and I noticed they take a special interesting in kid's requests. Even though it's just recently that I discovered Dinkel's, I hope they have more success in the future as they have had in the past.

I checked out Dinkel's web site in advance to scout out anything special, and of course read some Yelp reviews. First thing to know is there is parking right in front of the place. You can park in front for 15 minutes if you put your warning lights on, just long enough to look around and make your purchases. That's important to me because I refuse to give one red cent to those privatized parking meters. Once inside I got several items: sour cream donut - At first glimpse this looked like it would be greasy and especially unhealthy, but I trusted my fellow Yelpers. I'm glad I did! It wasn't greasy at all, nor was it overly sugary, which has become my sore spot with some sweets. It was nice and cakey, had a very good flavor, and just enough of a light glaze to finish it off. I've gotten anti-donut lately but this could easily be a staple for future visits. cherry danish - The first couple bites I tasted something that seemed off, like maybe yeast? Whatever it was my taste buds quickly acquired a fondness for it. The danish was moist, slightly flaky, and had the perfect level of icing drizzled all over. It was not buttery tasting despite its golden color, which I was glad for. The cherry filling was very tasty, but I would have liked more. I'm one of those people who likes as much filling as pastry, so take that for what it's worth. With about half a dozen fillings to choose from I'll almost certainly get another next time. carrot cake - Kudos for selling cake by the slice, and even having each slice neatly surrounded with plastic wrap so it doesn't get stale while waiting to be bought. The carrot cake was moist and tasted great. Best of all, Dinkel's avoids the high crime of putting raisins in their carrot cake, which should get a chef's license revoked! There are also no nuts in this one, which is fine with me. The cream cheese frosting is delicious and not too sugary, a good thing since there's a whole lot of it. Any more would have been too much. Speaking of too much, $3.75 is overpriced for what you get here. As an occasional treat it's the perfect size not to overindulge. I would get it again, but it's no bargain. powdered sugar stollen - The girl behind the counter pronounced it "stolen", so that answered my question there. I saw this on the website and it sounded too good not to get. It's in their refrigerated section, which was good news since I'm a bachelor and already had three other items to eat right away. It is very firm and needed a bread knife to cut, but wasn't stale or otherwise unpleasant in texture. There were raisins, dried pineapple chunks and sliced almonds inside. The best thing I can compare it to is Irish soda bread, but it's more like a very firm cake in texture. The one-pound stollen cost over $12, but I did get four breakfasts out of it. That's still much too expensive for what it is, especially when I think about all the other goodies to choose from. The question is not if but how soon I will return to Dinkel's. I've been a north sider without a bakery for far too long, having figured the best treats require family size purchases. Luckily Dinkel's is not only friendly to lone customers but also high quality. This is one of those places I'm glad to give my business to because there aren't enough of them out there. It would be impossible to leave without something you like.

I popped in here spontaneously as a consolation prize after another fruitless (i.e., whoopie-pieless) visit to Suvan's. I had heard that Dinkel's has apple fritters but the girl told me that this was only a seasonal item which they carried back in October. Booo. But why waste a trip, right? So I got an apple danish (dry and not very sweet), a long john (pretty darn good), and a cinnamon roll, which was very tasty but baked in this sort of thick paper shell which was impossible to remove without destroying the bottom half of the pastry and making a huge mess. So that's one thumb up, one thumb down, and one imaginary thumb sideways...seems like three stars to me. I'll try them next fall for the apple fritters and apple cider doughnuts.

The cake doughnuts are almost as good as the ones I grew up with, hard to find a good cake doughnut these days. I agree about the service, though. It's as though they don't care if people come or not- but the doughnuts want you to come!!!

I'm not really a fan of donuts, but I'll eat theirs. I don't eat a lot of cake, but theirs takes it! I tasted their strudel at the Christkindel Market and it was the best I've ever had. They definitely know what they're doing and take pride in doing it. Although It's delicious, it can be a little pricey, so it's not a place I'd frequent, but for special occasions, it's OK to splurge!

Being raised in SoIL around St. Louis I have a particular passion for donuts. To help explain this let me say that when I was in high school, students used to visit their local donut shop (I went to a private hs and had friends from many towns) and we would hold competitions to see who had the best donuts. Since I moved to Chicago I have searched in vain for a great donut. In my experience Chicago donuts tend to be cakey and dry. It is as if people actually think DD makes good donuts! But now I think I found the answer: Dinkel's. All I can say is amazing! The old fashioned melts in your mouth, the creme filled is smooth, rich and holds up over time and the long johns are fluffy and moist. These are the best donuts I have had in Chicago. Dinkel's does a lot more than donuts, and is actually a full service bakery. There is little they can't do in shop. They also provide mail order service for a good portion of their menu. However, they will only mail items that will hold up to the rigors of shipping (so no birthday cake or other items that are typically refrigerated.) The prices seem relatively low for area, probably so as not to disturb the old time customers (the place was opened in 1922.) My recommendation is to find a reason to give Dinkel's a try.

Spent a few hours in here today waiting on some friends and I got to try a few different products and It's nothing to write home about. I had a slice of cake and our friends had a tart and some cookies and nothing was really had a wow factor. Not enough seating and this place is not ideal for a meet up or a relaxing sit in pastry break as there are only a few tables all near the display case where everyone stands while waiting for their order. This place is also very busy and people find it okay to just sit their sick kids at your table while you're eating since there is serious lack of seating. Most awkward moment and it happened to another table so with all the room by the door this place could definitely use the extra 2-3 tables

Old-Fashioned Donuts. Bear Claws. Chocolate Flourless Cake. Let me repeat: If they have a Chocolate Flourless Cake (~$4), buy it. Actually, don't buy it. Send me a PM and tell me that they have it so that I can drop everything and go buy one. Dinkel's is a Chicago institution that, in my mind, helps define Chicago. It's family owned and operated; the staff is super friendly, and above all, the pastries, cakes, brownies, bread, and cookies are all delicious. No matter what you buy, you can't go wrong. Their coffee is even fair trade certified. You ROCK MY WORLD Dinkel's Bakery!!!

So this review is going to gut me. I love Dinkel's! It was one of the first true pastry shops I went to in the city. For 90¢ I got one of the best-tasting donuts I've ever had. Since then I have been a big fan of all things dessert in the city. It's not easy to do, but when it's done right, it's good. And it's packed on the weekends for a reason. And their bread is very nice, too. They're willing to slice it for you as well. Their pies are great too. And they also have a great little selection of sugar-free treats, great for my grandma-in-law who has fond memories of this nearly-100-year-old storefront. Now... For the other side. I was not impressed by Dinkel's when it came to wedding cakes. The tasting experience itself was a little colder than I would've liked (we made an appointment and even came during a work week). But what didn't work for us was the taste. And that was VERY shocking. The frosting was gritty. The cake was drier than it should've been. And I wasn't the only one -- our parents, too, were surprised. They did explain everything very well and were patient. Go to Dinkel's. Enjoy Dinkel's.

My friend bought my birthday cake at Dinkel's....and it was awesome! So moist and fluffy, and the frosting was UN-believable. (I cut a big piece to bring to the office, but BELIEVE ME, I licked that knife clean. Yum!!)

My all time favorite place for cookies and cakes. A must hit every time you are in Chicago. Since I no longer live downtown, I do a lot of mail ordering and they are great. Just got valentines day cookies for my wife in the mail today...it's going to be tough not to break into them ahead of time...

We tried three other wedding cake places before these guys, and I think we made the right call. Their prices were very reasonable, and the cake was delicious. Despite our inability to be decisive on decorations, they took our suggestions and made a cake that looked and tasted great. Joan helped us immensely in both the tasting and ordering process.

Dinkel's: Damn delicious bakery staffed by damn delightful people. I don't get anything fancy here. I stick to the glass case on the right, ignoring the pretty-pretty to the left. I could live off the veggie burglaur and a blueberry-cheese danish, with a hot cocoa when it's cold. That burglaur is nothing short of amazing. I'd eat it for breakfast every day if I lived nearby. I'm still amazed they were awesome enough to team up with Groupon for the $15-for-$5 + free danishes deal. They certainly weren't hurting for business. I used to come with my sister-in-law when we first moved to Chicago, and it seemed like any ole bakery. These days I'm pretty much in love.

I think it's telling when I'm racing out of work and onto the El to get to Dinkel's before closing time. It's also telling that, even on a weekend and living in Berwyn, I contemplate taking the train or driving all the way to Lakeview to pick up some sweeties from Dinkel's. I only first walked into Dinkel's because of being in the neighborhood for Pho's, The Chicago Music Exchange and The Shire, but now I contemplate visiting the neighborhood just for the amazing baked treats. This is a long-time, family establishment that can out bake many other renowned bakeries, in my opinion. The breads are stellar; I don't ever want to buy bread from a grocery store again! And if you spend a certain amount of money on baked goods (which I have!), you get a free loaf! My favorite Dinkel's fare is a huge box of assorted cookies -- the best bakery cookies I've ever had. Chocolate-dipped, raspberry-filled, almond crescents, pecan "sandies," sprinkles....The cookies are so good that I like to share them with the guys at The Shire just to spread the unbelievable cookie wealth! The cupcakes are enormous, sweet-filled delights. Oddly, my first cupcake experience with them was a lemon-filled cake which must have been a seasonal experiment because after seeing them twice, it's as if they never existed. Even the Dinkel's employees have no clue as to what I'm talking about when I ask if they might have those lemony bits of heaven available again. I must have been dreaming, but I suppose it was the mysterious vehicle drug that got me hooked and coming back. Since then I've tried all sorts of things, which I bet is exactly what Dinkel's had in mind. They knew exactly what they were doing, putting those lemon morsels out to hook me in, then keeping me hopeful that I might run into them again some day. I see your ploy, Dinkel's. I haven't tried the doughnuts yet, surprisingly, but judging from previous reviews, I think they may be next on my list. I am truly a Dinkel's believer. There is a reason it's been around for decades and I hope it continues to be around for decades more.

We ordered a chocolate sheet cake and I was absolutely floored by how much it cost. BUT it was literally the best cake I've eaten in my life. And I've had a lot of experience with cake! Worth every penny, er, dollar!

This place is for sure the ol' standby when it comes to donuts. Their donuts are always delicious, I especially like the chocolate variety. In the fall they pull out the big guns with the pumpkin spice donuts which I consider to be "da jam". Yes, it is so good you start talking like DJ Jazzy Jeff circa 1992. I really hope this place doesn't get 'discovered' and start acting like they are too good for their britches. I don't want another place in the city where you have to pay $4 for a doughnut. I'm looking at you Doughtnut Vault!

Dinkel's is the best old-school European bakery in the city. Hands down. No, they do not make particularly adorable cupcakes. No, you should not try the mini key lime pie. (WTF kind of bakery item is a key lime pie) No, they do not serve vegan baked goods. Fantastic cookies, doughnuts, and any sort of strudel/danish type item you can imagine. Fresh baked bread, GREAT hot chocolate, muffins...the list goes on and on. Plus everyone I have ever spoken to there is incredibly friendly! Be sure to check out whatever seasonal baked good they might be offering! MMMMM......Easter Bunny cookies. Nothing shows my belief that Jesus dies for my sins like biting the head of a delicious iced bunny cookie...

9 March 2009: DINKEL'S BAKERY TO RECEIVE ELUSIVE SIXTH STAR My birthday was last week and my boyfriend decided to get my cake from Dinkel's. As is well-publicized, I enjoy their doughnuts A LOT. So he calls and orders me a chocolate layer cake with strawberries and then thinks to ask: "Can we put a chocolate doughnut on top?" Without a pause, the woman taking the order asked him, "Did you want anything written on the doughnut?" (by the way-- the doughnut-topped cake was phenomenal and was a hilarious addition to my birthday soiree...) THIS PLACE IS HEAVEN. :) Honestly, for the money, this is easily one of my favorite bakeries I've ever had-- everything is made well, well-priced and they clearly care about their customers. Kudos!

I love the donuts and pastries! The cakes... Not so much. My favorites are the cake and sour cream donuts as well as the danishes. I loooooove the cherry and cheese danish. It's flaky, moist, not too sweet- it's perfect. I was loving every bite. I also had a slice of the brownie torte cake and aaack. I'm not into it. It's too sweet and average.. It was very moist though, I'll give them that. Was it worth 3 something for that slice? No way. The ladies here are very sweet. There's a 10 dollar minimum to use your card here- my total came to 8.03 so I told them i'll get a couple more items to up my total. They said no, no it's okay and that they have the minimum to deter those that want to use a card on a dollar total. Understandable! But I thought that was so nice of them. I like going on weekdays late morning- afternoons when it's nice and quiet and I can stroll down Belmont with a donut.

Things to love about Dinkel's: -The name -The sign -The fact that it's one of the only places to buy homemade donuts in the city (what gives, Chicago?) Things I, personally, do not love about Dinkel's: -Dry cakes -Overly sweet frostings -Flavorless cookies -Pastries that seem to cater to the 55+ crowd -Dusty display cakes I thought for a moment that I was spoiled by all of the sophisticated patisseries popping up all over the city thanks to the Fresh Pastry School but no, there are plenty of all-American bakeries who can swing a buttery chocolate chip cookie and a moist chocolate cupcake. Being old is great, but being delicious is better.

This is a very nice bakery/restaurant with delicious baked goods and now - sandwiches too! My wife and I both had Caprese sandwiches (very good bread, balsamic vinegar, fresh mozzarella, and fresh basil) I wish they had bottled water, oh well, I had a bottle of grape juice and it was good. I was offered hot chocolate, but that's not really my thing in hot weather. I will be back to try that in the fall. This place is the tops - don't miss out on a true Chicago institution!

I forgot to write a review when I used my Groupon several months ago! Everything we had there was delicious and affordable. We had a cherry turnover, german chocolate cake slice, some over cake slice and a quiche-e thing and a coffee all for just over $15! My ex-wife's family would order cakes from there many years ago and those were also tremendous! Writing this reminds me that I need to go back soon.

Awesome, old school cakes. The kind your mom got you when you had your 5th birthday party. I suspect Dinkel's uses quality ingredients - these cakes will taste NOTHING like Jewel or Dominick's. The staff is always willing to help you out with special decorations/customizations. Having a few parking spots out front is also a huge plus when you're staggering down the street trying not to drop a huge, heavy box of cake. Extra kudos to the staff for being able to provide service with a smile even when there are shrieking toddlers running amok in the seating area!

In my search for my b-day cake, I decided to try this place. Unfortunately, I did not find my cake here but other treats were found. I tried the chocolate donut, and a canoli. Love the canoli!!! My partner had the strawberry short cake. It was tasty as well.

Old school Chicago bakery. Anything with chocolate on it is good (MmmmmmmmLong johnsMmmmmmmmmm) Minus one star for routinely slow and indifferent service behind the counter. I'm standing there ready to order (with money in my hand ....) and the phone rings. Guess which one the girl picked? I don't like that. Put the phone on hold or have someone in back do phone calls. Anyhoo, five flags. More flags, more fun

I am giving them four stars as Dinkel's is a sufficient second to my favorite bakery, Jarosch Bakery. I discovered Dinkel's when my old boss sent me a Christmas present from there which was a box of the chocolate chip cookies and a strudel. I immediately fell in love with their cookies! I've gone back several times for them since. Their cakes are good, however, I found them to be pretty "buttery" tasting. I am a big buttercream fan, however, their frosting to me tasted a little too buttery. I purchased a Swiss Mocha cake once and found it actually to be a little strong on the coffee taste that even I, the one with the insane sweet tooth couldn't bear to finish the cake. As well, I really do think their cakes are a little pricey. Their pastries are good though and their spinach croissant is pretty tasty. Would I go back there? Absolutely...

My love letter to the Dinkel's Chocolate Bismark... Dear Bismark, Before you I never knew a donut. I never loved a donut. Okay, honestly, I never even liked a donut. After you, I will never love another donut. Love Always, Nina PS: I hope you are okay with me keeping our relationship open to a few other baked goods from Dinkels. Just remember, you will always come (out of the bag) first.

Oh, the Sophisticakes. Really, you can't go wrong with any confection here. You can taste the love and attention. I haven't tried any of their savories yet, but have heard good things. But I digress from the Sophisticakes: your own personal heaven, filled like a hostess, presented like a cupcake but sooo much better. A friend of mine turned me on to them & she raved until I had to try one. I love her and hate her for introducing me to them because they might be addictive. Another delicious find: lowfat bran muffins in the refrigerated case. They come 6 in a pack, and are very moist and flavorful and not so bad for you either, based on the nutritional information (lotsa fiber, lower in calories & fat than you'd ever expect from the taste). The shop itself feels as though they figured out a long time ago how to do things right in a bakery & have not found the need to improve upon it. And I completely agree. Dinkel's does it right.

Nothing beats a good ole' German Chicago bakery! Dinkel's is truly a classic. They have the best butter crust white bread but if you want to get any make sure you get there early in the day as they sell out! If they happen to be out of bread their donuts and cookies are a great consolation prize! When I lived in Chicago my proximity to Dinkel's was definitely a consideration and a bonus if I was close enough by.

Have had a lot of good things from this place. Have ordered multiple cakes and all were very good. Have also gone in for coffee and sweets in the morning and love the bear claw. The only thing I would say that stops me from giving five stars is the coffee. Not a lot going for them in that area. But overall a good place.

If you look at my profile on this site, I think I list jelly donuts as one of my interests. I am really into donuts, especially jelly ones. They had two different varieties: frosted and sugared. Both were so disappointing that I gave them to my dog. A jelly donut quite literally must have delicious jelly. It makes the donut. Their jelly does not impress. I also rounded out my splurge with a chocolate bismark. Again, the custard was disappointing. The dough wasn't much to talk about either. And if you think my only basis for comparison is Dunkin, think again. Best donuts in Chicago? Dat Donuts. Hands down. No one comes close. Problem? They have only two stores and they're in Nepal as far as I'm concerned: 83rd and Cottage Grove and 103rd and something or other. Far. Very far. But if you ever need a fix, this is where you need to go - not Dinkel's. I grew up in Lakeview and this place has been around forever so they must do something right but it's not their donuts.

This review is strictly for the chocolate covered cake donuts! My Dad always brought these home for us from the city when I was growing up. Now that I live here I treat myself every once in awhile as long as I can wake up before they are all sold out. Still a great treat and a great part of my childhood!

My favorite sugar cookies in the city live here. They are BIG and always decorated wonderfully. They are just truly classic! I think the workers must think I am nuts when I specifically point to the exact cookie I want....and send them back in if they grab the wrong one. I'm sorry...I can't really explain this. I just really love the whole experience of coming to Dinkel's picking out my treat and guess I just feel like a big kid here. The old fashioned sour cream frosted donuts are amazing too and I am always a sucker for a pretzel roll. Unfortunately I keep finding new things that I like here and maybe that is why elastic waist pants feel so much more comfortable to me lately : ).

I have since discovered Dinkel's gluten free chocolate chip cookies, and have, on many occasions, eaten half of the container on my way to work. They are truly fantastic - sugary, buttery, chocolatey. Check them out for a scrumptious gluten free treat.

Yes and No. Yes: I ordered one of those cakes they had displayed in the window for a Halloween birthday and it was pretty delicious. Very smooth red velvet on the inside, Frankenstein on the outside with a whipped cream frosting that was light, fluffy, and the perfect amount of sweet. No: Back when I lived just a couple of doors away, I used to stop here on the way to the el for my morning commute to grab my much needed hazelnut coffee. But that's it. Why? The donuts are just not good and the other breakfast treats never made my eyes light up. Perhaps I'm spoiled on a certain little donut shop called Home Cut back home, but the boston creme is the only donut I've tried from here and I couldn't finish it.

I grew up eating everything Dinkel's and this is truly the best bakery- everything from their chocolate donuts (to die for!) to their perfect white buttercream frosting (my favorite is the chocolate cake with white buttercream- yum!) is the best! You will not find a better birthday cake anywhere in the city. I ordered my wedding cake from Dinkels and my guests still rave about it to this day. Also, don't miss out on this bakery's wonderful mail order catalogue. I live out of town now and order quite frequently. You can order Dinkel's for your family/friends anywhere! It arrives fresh and ready to be eaten. This is a personal favorite for us to do at the holidays and also for birthdays throughout the year. I like to order brownies and chocolate chip cookies for myself and others! This makes a great care-package for loved ones at college too. Other favorites: praline pecan strudel fudge brownies chocolate chip cookies/dippers pound cake cherry cheese strudel stollen, of course! old-fashioned doughnuts kuchens lowfat apricot muffins YUM!

Dinkel's, you must have been the shiz-nit in 1945, because anyone over the age of 65 just loves you to friggin death. They fight for your honor harder than the Allies in WWII. And you know, thats fine by me, the elders love their sweets after all. Who am I to crush the memories of those twice my age. But for me - ugh. Overly waxy, dry and so sweet your teeth hurt after one bite. Believe me I am a very good authority on this place. The people at my work have brought in one thing or another from here every week for something like 25 years. Every birthday cake MUST come from here, every donut, every danish. If it has some sort of goopy filling it is A+ in their book. I have seen pretty much everything this joint makes at one point or another - and I have never set foot within their doors! After the first horrible bite of dry chocolate cake with a jam filling and inch-thick wax frosting, or a thick, tasteless chocolate donut with a slightly greasy aftertaste, I swore off Dinkels forever. Just as well I suppose - I certainly dont need the extra calories! But please - there are SO many better bakeries out there - only come here if you need a cake for Gamma's 90th.

Dinkel's has been around since the 1920s so I feel sort of dumb, saying "ditto" I agree this bakery good. Even the coffee is good. And they host kid's parties- we're planning to have our winter babies b-day celebrations there. My favorites so far: spinach croissant, light and filling; the "cow cookies" are mooovelous- according to my five-year-old; and the old school donuts, like the Bismarck, blow away Dunkin's any day. Nice to have a true Chicago Institution around and still tasting fresh.

You can't go wrong with Dinkel's- from their amazing neon sign to the almost-late-to-work-put-your-flashers-on-and-run-in-for donuts parking, all the way through their gleaming cases of baked goodness, Dinkel's is as solid as it gets. Completely unpretentious yet totally delicious, Dinkel's has high quality, classic Americana bakery offering I've dabbled and dinkled in just about all of it. Their cakes are terrific- so good, that when we brought one to the restaurant for my grandma's birthday last year, the bus boy asked us for a slice!

Yum, Yum...sweets! I've called in orders and with just a few days of advanced notice, they can create any kind of cake you can imagine. I've ordered some very interesting cakes here for co worker's birthdays and some of my favorites that we've sampled include their atomic cake, chocolate torte cake, carrot cake, and tres leches cake. All of amazing quality. The other nice thing is for a small delivery fee they will bring the cake to you instead of picking up the cake at the bakery itself. The last delivery they made here to the office I noticed that even the receipt smelled of bakery goodness, you just can't go wrong with Dinkel's!

I'm no bakery expert, no cookie queen here. There are some things I expect from a bakery: A large selection of delectable delights. (check). A clean, inviting atmosphere. (check). Friendly, adept employees who don't show their annoyance at having to put orders together for customers? (un-check). I understand if you're trying to relate to customers, but yawning over the cakes and my questions might make me feel like you'd rather be in bed? Don't get me wrong, I know how you're feeling, but if you're really falling asleep at the counter...have a nap? Or something. My pumpkin cookies (ach, no smiley face cookies this season I guess) and butter cookies with chocolate and sprinkles were just fine, thank you! Love their selection of German pastry.

Ordering our wedding cake from Dinkel's seemed like a no-brainer. Their prices were A LOT more reasonable than the other bakeries we checked out. Plus we were familiar with their tasty treats (my office used to always order Dinkel's every month for birthdays) and they are close to our neighborhood. We had a pretty strict budget for a cake and just wanted something simple and elegant. Joanne did a great job of helping us get creative with how we could get the cake we wanted without going over our budget. We ended up with a simple, 2 tier round wedding cake - a 7" cappuccino buttercream cake on top of a 10" raspberry custard cake. Instead of an extra tier, we opted for an additional 10" round cake on the side. It's more cost effective to scale back on the tiers and just do an extra sheet cake on the side. They were somewhat limited with what they could do with the decoration, but she helped us come up with a design that we were happy with. The cake was tasty AND beautiful. Way to go, Dinkel's!

I almost gave this two-stars but their goodies are so damn good. The two-stars would be because your staff is meaner than snot sometimes. And when they are not meaner than snot, they look really bored and disinterested. But the extra star comes because your donuts and cupcakes are so yummy. To the staff's credit, I think the management could treat them a little better. And then maybe they would be nicer. They seem to be treated like chattel over there. But if you can get past that, get in line and get a donut. Yummy!

Dinkel's is just another reason why I love my neighborhood. Saturday morning, hungover and unshowered, I can shuffle in, order my coffee (better than the Starbucks across the street) and a muffin, croissant, or cheese danish, and immediately start to feel better. The staff are always friendly, even though I might look like I've been hit repeatedly in the head with a shovel. Seems whenever I don't take a number, they're calling numbers. Whenever I grab a number, I don't end up needing it. So I just try to remember to take a number every time, so that the pushy senior citizens don't try to butt in line. There are tables to sit at for those days when I'm not sure I can make the trip home right away.

By far my favorite bakery in the city. It almost feels like going in a time machine (it's old-school and family owned). Try to sneak a peak in the back where the baking is done - it's like looking into the 1920s! I really appreciate that they play old-school radio as well. My husband and I announce are cravings for this place at least 4 times a week (but honestly, we crave it everyday). My favorite is the custard bismark! The coffee is delicious. With the massive influx of 'gluten free' this and 'vegan' that, and third rate wannabe Parisian desserts...I'm so grateful authentic places like Dinkels still exist.

This was a stop on our cupcake crawl. Eek! Dinkel's received last place on my list... I'm sure that many of Dinkel's desserts are amazing, old-school, delicious, and nostalgic. I'm quite certain that this bakery will thrive for years and decades and generations...but their cupcakes are terrible! I am giving 3 stars to Dinkels because they are old-school, have a huge selection of desserts, and their cakes look cool. Zero stars for their cupcakes. Over-whipped icing, stale cake, cake sticking to the wrapper....I just can't do it. They're really bad. Go to Dinkels for cakes for a party, birthday, wedding etc. But for cupcakes please look elsewhere!

Ok listen. We have a Friday donut club at work. This has been going on for a few years now. One of our rules is "bringing in Dunkin Donuts is like forgetting to bring in donuts". Alright so you get the idea. We are donut snobs. So where do the snobs rank Dinkels? They are the benchmark! Best boston creme anywhere. Crunch on the outside soft on the inside with a perfectly sweetened custard and no thin pretend chocolate glaze. Oh man! Where are my keys?!

I buy my moms raisin bran muffins with carrots here. Sometimes they have canoli's that I get here because they are sooooo authentic! They are filled with sweet creamy and thick filling with tiny choc morsels covered in a very flaky and crunchy shell.

Dink Do's rocks hard. I worked at the Whole Foods down the street from this place for over 2 years and being able to get some Dink Do's before a 6:30am shift was sometimes the only thing keeping me from killing myself.

I went here to pick up a dessert for a dinner party and the counter person was extremely patience and helpful . I had no idea what to choose, the options there are overwhelming and everything looked good. We decided on a crowd favorite of an assortment of butter cookies. She described the different butter cookie flavors for me so I could choose specifically. They were busy, but she took her time with me, and packaged it up with an extra box, so my cookies wouldn't get crushed on the rack of my bike. Great! Customer service, and the cookies melted in your mouth and were a big hit. People were checking out the box to make a note of remembering where they came from. I will definitely return. Maybe for some Pumpkin slices now that it is Fall!

Today Dinkel's was unbearably slow-moving during the usual weekday morning coffee-pastry rush. Get it together, gang, these are commuters! Despite the three staff, there was a line of 12 customers hanging around. I waited 15 painstaking minutes. Others simply walked out. I give them credit: I'm sure there is high turnover, so everyone is relatively new to a job that pays meagre wages. But it was frustrating to see one staffer off to the side talking to people instead of providing needy customers with a caffeine-sugar infusion to get them out the door. The spinach cheese croissant was flavorful, if too buttery, but I won't be coming back.

The first cupcake I had from here was decent, but nothing to write home about. The second cupcake I had was extremely dry and lacked flavor (it was a carrot cup-cake...it's hard NOT to get a flavor-blast); there was an over-abundance of frosting...a clever mask for tasteless goods. We also bought some brownies but those, too, lacked moisture. We did go right before they closed, so maybe it was just an off-time? Your guess is as good as mine. Bottom line: If you're looking for dry, tasteless treats then this is definitely the place for you. If you're looking for something where you do not need to chug a gallon of milk with your cupcake, then move along. This is what I get for cheating on my usual bakery. This just wasn't the place for me.

I won't lie: I love the donuts! But I also like pretty much everything else. Cakes, pastries, cookies, bread . . . they're all winners. They did a very good job on our son's first birthday cake, and I'm planning to go back for the 2nd birthday. My only complaint would be the service. Sometimes it's really good, but more often it's very blah.

Delicious! Very good bakery, Dinkel's has everything you'd ever want! Tried several cake slices including Strawberry Butter cream (YUM!), Chocolate Butter cream (Excellent!), and the Chocolate Cupcake. All were really light and fluffy but the Strawberry was defiantly my favorite. Will go back, maybe for a Birthday Cake!

Every year, I order the same exact birthday cake for my girlfriend from Dinkel's. Every year it's been perfect...until this year. Would have been 5 stars, but I'm dropping to 2.5. I phoned in an order on 4/12 for 4/17 pick-up. Gave the order-taker very specific instructions, which I repeated several times since she seemed a bit confused (for example, she didn't know what jimmies were even though the website offers a choice of white, chocolate, or rainbow under the "finishing touches" heading). My girlfriend likes her cake completely covered with colored frosting flowers. No inscription. Just a garden of frosting flowers perched atop the cake. When I arrived Sunday to pick up the cake, the top had been frosted with white flowers. I explained that this was not what I had ordered - that I had requested all different colored flowers. The woman said "that's not what it says on the ticket." I explained that I've ordered the same exact cake for years, that I clarified my order numerous times on the phone, and that there was absolutely NO possibility this was my mistake. It wasn't. Another woman came to look at the ticket and explained that the order was, in fact, taken correctly but that the decorator simply didn't pay attention to the instructions. She told me that typically when flowers are covering a cake, it's a wedding design with all-white frosting. Unfortunately, she told me, no decorators were on hand on Sunday to fix the problem. They discounted the cake, but I didn't want the money. I wanted the cake I ordered. If money was what I wanted, I wouldn't have offered to trade it for cake in the first place. Did the cake still taste good? Yes, it was delicious. Do I understand mistakes happen and no one's perfect? Sure. However, if you do not have anyone available to FIX your mistakes, you had better make sure you don't make them to begin with. Good thing my girlfriend wasn't a 5-year-old whose birthday easily could have been ruined - RUINED! - by this type of thing. Take a little more pride and care in what you're doing, Dinkel's. Your order takers and decorators should not be making assumptions and should be closely following customer requests - ESPECIALLY if you don't have the staff to correct issues when they arise.

This review is solely based on their butter cookies. I bought a pound for a little family get together. And although I appreciate my family not eating it, I gained that extra weight by eating the entire box minus three cookies myself. And that was three too many my husband had. I've never really loved cookies before but I am hooked. Consider me addicted. I need help!

Nice German bakery. I really enjoy the sour cream donut! Mmm!! Free parking in loading zone outside. Be sure to put your blinkers on though. Cakes used to be amazing here but something has definitely changed. Last two cakes were incredibly dry and has just lost the" love " factor. I wrote an email to the owner about it but never got a response. So, apparently the don't care either??

There is such love for Dinkl's among my friends. I just don't get it. Don't get me wrong, I never turn down a sweet. If I had my choice though, I wouldn't be getting my sweets from here. There are far better options in Chicago.

Nice neighborhood bakery with good pastries and baked goods. Nothing to write home about, because each home town probably has a place similar. Don't get me wrong, everything I've had from here was delicious. It's just nothing really stands out and slaps me in the face.... like "Wippshawwwwwww- this cookie Rocks!" - no. but, they did have CUBS cookies. i ate them and the cubs got swept... bad sign? eh. probably not their fault.

Fantastic donut selection and other baked goods for a very reasonable price. I've been to and enjoyed a few "doughnut" joints in the city but at the price of time and money. Great quality without the hassel.

This is my go to place for cakes. I always get the chocolate fudge filling with chocolate fudge frosting...amazing! The last time I ordered a cake I got fresh strawberries on top and it was even better. The cakes are expensive, but totally worth it. Their butter cookies are great as well.

We came in here for a wedding cake consultation/tasting last week and had a great experience. You pre-order three different flavors of cake and three different fillings to try. The woman we met with was an absolute doll and was very helpful. The cake was as good as any bakery we've been to (and trust me, we're going to most of them because we are cake-aholics) for what we like, which is a simple vanilla cake (we actually would go with the butter kuchen cake here) and fudge filling. We are not doing fondant (I don't like the taste and don't need something too ornate) so the pricing here is extremely reasonable and they have lots of ideas for how to stretch your dollar here- a real rarity when dealing with wedding vendors.

Dinkel's reminds me of the bakeries that I used to go to when living in the NYC area., not the city bakeries, but the ones in North Jersey and Connecticut. I have yet to go to another place in the Chicago area that quite matches this place for the vibe it has...but maybe I just haven't looked hard enough. I go to Dinkel's everytime I go to the Chicago Music Exchange and whenever I find myself on Lincoln in the mornings. I love the doughnuts here, so much better than others I've had in the city. You can tell in the taste that everything is made fresh daily. It isn't just the doughnuts that are great here. The cinnamon rolls and the danishes are also very, very good. I've only ever had the doughnuts and danishes here so I can't comment on the cakes or other goods. The prices are very good and the service is quick. Expect it to be busy on Saturday and Sunday mornings but just take a number and take the time to decide how many different items you are going to try that morning. It can be quite hard to find a table in the place and I find that to usually be my only complaint each time I go to Dinkel's. Also, they're not always the quickest on refilling the coffee containers during rush times. Well worth at least one visit when in the neighbourhood.

Oh Man. This bakery is pretty awesome. We used to get free DinkDoh's at my job once a month. Those chocolate donuts are unreal. But now we just get day old croissants and old blackberries that give you diarrhea. That really has nothing to do with Dinkel's.

  • Jeff K.

I ordered 2 cakes from there and they were both outstanding! The cakes were similar - chocolate and vanilla with fresh strawberries and whipped creme in the middle with buttercream on the outside, exceptional! The ingredients were fresh and it tasted amazing, plus it was by far the best price in the city. Great service, great price and great food, what else can you ask for?

Every single thing I've ever tasted here has been better than the last. This is the one perk my department offers: For birthdays, we get a different cake from Dinkel's. So I know there's a spectrum of awesome, and Dinkel's has hit every point on it. I don't know how much they cost, but I will ABSOLUTELY be looking into them for my wedding (which, by the way, will be out of the country). Even if it dropped and smashed into a thousand crumbs, I would eat that cake all right off the dance floor. Oh, and I don't even like cake. Or, I didn't before Dinkel's. Yes, that good.

I was looking for some specific 4th of July sugar cookies to bring out of town from a Chicago bakery and wasn't able to find anywhere that could do the designs in advance with the hard sugar icing. Luckily, Dinkel's could do it AND they let me choose how I wanted them decorated! They were delicious, cute, and a big hit, even coming in a cute box tied with a string. The only downside is they charge more for pre-ordering. I will go back.

I wish I lived closer to this place. I grew up by a German bakery and this place relives my childhood urges. I ordered a birthday cake from them and it was amazing. I love that they give you a little plastic cake server tied to the box when you order a cake to go. So thoughtful. It was a super easy experience all around.

Old fashioned pastry heaven. I've tried their freshly made danishes, coffeecakes, and doughnuts, which are just delicious. They also work well for bribing people into helping you move early in the morning. Also, this week is totally the time to go-- it's paczki time!!! Normally, Dinkel's has traditional German bismarks, but, this week it kicks it up a notch with like 12 different kinds of paczkis (pretty much Polish bismarks, filled with all sorts of stuff....chocolate, custard, raspberry, cherry, plum, apricot) Oh, Dinkel's, thank you for making Fat Tuesday a little bit fatter.

I decided to try out the famous Dinkel's today for the first time. I had an especially difficult morning and was in need of some sweet therapy. I asked the counter associate what the most popular item was, and she replied, the chocolate donut. I think it's the most delicious donut that I have ever encountered (side note: I am not a donut connoisseur). But it was sooo tasty, I couldn't stop eating it. I meant to save a bit for my boyfriend to try, but that unfortunately did not happen. Well, guess I'll have to go back!

Omigod... I love Dinkel's bakery, they have this one product, these little tiny chocolate chip cookies, delicioso, magnifique, mmmm mmm good. I am loving me some Dinkel's. One thought... if they had a tasty chocolate treat about the size of a marble, they could market it as a Dinkelberry, just a thought.

I went in one morning to get donuts for the icu nurses that have been taking care of my daughter. Bought a dozen donuts and the nurses really enjoyed them, however the one donut that my husband chose had a rock in the jelly filling. He went in the next morning to let them know. He was told that the owner would call. Two days later still no call. I stopped in and they sent someone who assured me that she would let them know that I stopped in and that someone would be calling us. It has been two weeks and still no call. All we really wanted was some sort of acknowledgment that they heard our complaint, an apology, and if my husbands tooth was cracked that they would pay for the dentist bill.

Awesome bakery, best I'be ever been to. If you have time in Chicago, go here. I got their bourglar roll that is basically a fancy egg mcmuffin. It was very good, but I wish they had a microwave in there. The sandies, maple bacon donut and cookie that was a mr. sunshine wearing sunglasses made me cry tears of ultimate joy for about 10 minutes. Neil ordered a lot of stuff too.

Dinkel's was around when my mom was growing-up in Albany Park and I always heard her stories about this place. I'm a third-generation baker myself and I think Dinkel's is the real deal. No pleace will be 100% on everything, but Dinkel's comes close. I love their theme cakes around every holiday and the donuts are always perfect - regardless of the type. Worth hunting for a parking spot or having someone circle the block! Update: We now get Dinkel's treats at work just about once a week and I have become addicted. There has to be about 1/3 cup of fruit filling in the jelly donut! I love you Dinkel's!!!

  • Nicola L.

I love Dinkel's baked goods - cakes are divine, cupcakes are good, their bread is tasty and fresh every day. Do not head there, however, if you only have minutes to spare. The wait to be served is 15 + minutes, which is especially frustrating when the store is practically empty and employees are standing in the corner chatting and throwing you glances from time to time, as if to see when you're going to reach your boiling point. Today was the third (and last!) time I've walked out of Dinkel's due to the above problem. I have read the many reviews for other good bakeries in Chicago and have already picked up another one. Dinkel's will not get another penny of my money for their good, yet expensive goods.

Make your way to Dinkels fast, your sweet tooth will thank you. Typically I am not a fan of buttercream icing but the moist cake found in a Dinkel's cupcake was enough to overlook that. The bakery is very cozy and festive and the food is fresh. I'm bummed that I didn't get to taste their hot chocolate which has been improved from last year but I'll be sure to on my next trip to Chicago. Who needs deep dish pizza when you can have super delicious cupcakes from Dinkel's!?

  • Julie F.

This is one of the best places in Chicago. I know - big statement but, it's just true. Be sure to take a ticket when you enter from the machine on the right. Then pursue the cases. Pick up some donuts, a stollen for grandma, a whiskey cake (holidays only) for dad, and a box of their sugar cookies for anyone you want to fall in love with you. Seriously, people will remember you gave them these cookies and think warm happy thoughts about you - I promise.

I went here last weekend and was lucky that I beat the rush! Even though I have constantly passed this bakery numerous times, last Saturday was my first visit. The bakery is cute and old-fashioned- I was amazed at the large variety of items they sell. They even offer soup and chili! Also, I love the fact that Dinkel's has little sit-down areas for you to relax and enjoy your items. The chili, pfeffernuse (sp?) cookies, and apple danish were very good. The hot cocoa could've used a bit more cocoa. But all in all, a good experience.

I've just tried a chocolate donut from Dinkel's brought in my work colleague and very encouraged to check out this bakery :) Delicious and decadent would be the two words of choice for the fresh, cake donut with honestly an inch of chocolate on top. What a way to start the day!

I was expecting Dinkels to give me the best birthday cake....This is the first time that I have placed online order at Dinkels for one of my close friend's surprise birthday. I ordered Cappuchino/Tiramisu flavor which turned out to be disaster...I felt so embarassed. There is not an inch of the tiramisu or cappuchino flavor in the cake. Its just a plain cake with cream and toppings. The crew here were courteous and patient to check back on the order by calling me....I really appreciate the service, but not the cake. I am keen that I am not going to order here again! I dont know about the other cakes and donuts sold here but this so called tiramisu was horrible. Beware!!!

Had a birthday cake from this place at the place I'm working at today. DELISH! Creamy, buttery frosting, moist cake. It didn't have that cheap, overly-sweet taste that inferior cakes have. I'd try this place again . . .

  • Tony L.

Quite possibly the best donuts I've ever had. All the donuts were incredibly fresh. The glazed donuts had a perfect fluffy, yet chewy texture. The chocolate frosting was creamy and tasty. And their sour cream donuts were also very flavorful. No wonder they've been around since 1922. Truly a Chicago treasure!

All Dinkel's stuff is good, but you've never had cake until you try their MAPLE CAKE! They started baking these cakes about the time I was born, and I can never remember not having it for my birthday growing up on the north side of Chicago. I still get one every year and do my best to get them for other friends and family members on their birthdays, even when they don't like maple!

Dinkel's Almond Bear Claw is so damn good. Inexpensive pastries that are moist and flavorful. Try the sour cream donuts too -- they're almost as good as that almond bear claw. Great service to boot.

  • Dan P.

Overhyped. The donuts are really mediocre and I think I'd struggle to differentiate them to Dunkin Donuts or whatever. Not terribly moist, average flavor...just nothing special. Perhaps next time I'll try a few other things, but for all the hype this place gets, I was thoroughly disappointed.

Dinkel's butter cookies set the standard. Try the chocolate ones only if you're ready to induldge your senses. This place should be byob. I also enjoyed the banana cupcake. Prices seem reasonable to cheap for the cupcakes and I think the cookies might feel pricy until you taste the quality. I'm truely afraid to try their donuts after reading some reviews.

  • Sarah F.

The Good: An old fashioned bakery with people making stuff by hand behind the counter. The chocolate eclairs are phenomenal. And the cupcakes aren't bad (except the banana ones which were void of flavor and a weird texture). The Bad: There's a young woman who works there who's just snarky. Eye rolls, clearly impatient and seems annoyed the by the entire thing, which hey, if I worked in a bakery, I might be too. If it were one time I'd chalk it up to a bad day, but I've been in twice now and both times she was rude and generally unpleasant. The other: I went in last week to order a King Cake for Shrove Tuesday but they told me just to come back the day before. I didn't have time, so I didn't order one. No surprise that they were out when I came in today. But there were about 5 of us in there looking for King Cakes, some of whom said they had ordered ahead of time and the cakes were gone. So to sum up--5 stars for the chocolate eclair 4 stars for the generic cupcakes, 3 stars for the King Cake snafu, 2 stars for the banana cupcake and 1 star for employee cranky-pants. UPDATE: While employee cranky-pants still works there, I have to up the stars for, of all things, their 6 grain bread. i've been making it into toast and it is do delicious it's scary!! An extra star just for the bread!!!

My review got a kind comment from the bakery, which is totally cute. One more star for sure. :-) Plus, thanks to their comment, it is nice to know that the carrots in their super reasonably priced carrot cake ARE really organic. Oh and the cream cheese icing tastes even better the day after, cold from the fridge. Sooo dangerous to have that around. :-)

Dinkel's bakery is my quick fix dessert place in my neighborhood. They have all kinds of desserts i.e. cake, cupcake, danish, donut, strudel etc. The price is reasonable. There are some seatings in store too.

I ordered a birthday cake from Dinkels for my rehearsal dinner...there were a lot of birthdays in the fam around my wedding date...and it was a hit! The woman at the counter helped us pick an appropriate size to feed the amount of people at our dinner. They also didn't get mad when the restaurant that hosted our rehearsal dinner got nervous about their being a birthday cake there! Looking back I should have given Fado a heads up, but it all worked out in the end.

I love Dinkel's! They have great breakfast pastries that are always a hit if you need to bring something into the office. Also, after living in Louisiana for years, I was very pleased to find King Cakes there last Mardi Gras. They are in a great location (right by the Paulina Brown Line stop) and the staff is very nice. I definitely recommend stopping by if you are in the neighborhood.

Made us an unusual custom wedding cake in the fall of 2005. It turned out very well and looked close to the picture we gave them. Our guests still talk about it. And of course, it was delicious, too (all chocolate). Their cupcakes are the best!

I make it to Dinkel's every so often - when I want to treat myself or my coworkers with tasty, tasty donuts. I usually pick up a dozen (which are a little more expensive than what you'd find at Dunkin Donuts, but they're so much better). I'm a big fan of their bismarks - filled with all kinds of fruity goodness. They go great with a hot cup of coffee, especially on these cold and snowy days. Anyway, the place has old-world charm and speedy service working for it. So, I suggest you check them out and see why they've been around so long.

Reading the review before I see Dinkel's has been around since 1920. Well, I would expect some more attention to details and to the customer. I ordered a cake online for a very special event. It costed $110 so I was expecting nothing else than a great cake, ordered as I wanted it. When I picked it up, it took awhile to find it since it was under a pile of other cakes (so... when did you prepared it? Was it fresh?). The girl at the counter was kind of disinterested and took her time to do anything, even if the line on that Sunday morning was pretty long. Not a problem, as long as my cake is fine. When you order online, you also pay online and in advance. They didn't have proof of the payment and asked me to pay twice. No way. Just go in the back and check your orders and be more organized, next time. She was not in the mood to check better so she said ok. I asked to see the cake, to be sure that the writing was correct. It was. When I got home I saw the leveling of the cake was uneven and the reason was that it was made by two cakes put side by side. The order was completely different from the one I placed, asking for two different layers. That was too hard and so they did what was convenient for them. Obviously it was too late to fix anything and we served it as it was. The day after I called and I received a very rude attitude. I wasn't expecting a refund or anything in particular, but this man, I guess the owner, didn't really care of what happened. After barely listen to what I had to say, he said he would have verified and called me back. After 3 days he didn't, so I called back. Same rude attitude, he said that I should have checked when it was given to me,... under the frosting? Completely useless. Plus he still said he didn't ave prof of the payment and for a moment I hoped that it didn't go through, but my card was charged. It's just them. This place is out of my list and I suggest all yelpers to buy from people that really care about their customers and not only about their money. As I said I was only expecting an explanation of why the order was done so poorly and all I received was rudeness and disrespect.

A Chicago institution and TASTY, GREAT treats! Ignore the bad-bogus reviews below. Dinkel's is da-bomb!

So I've now had the opportunity to try Dinkel's three times, and I will be walking the extra way to get at these donuts! They're rich and decadent, with just enough crispy/crunchy on the outside to balance it all out. The sour cream donuts have the perfect tang that's great with a coffee. I'm a bigger fan of the "regular donuts" as the jelly filled donuts to be overfilled for me, making it a little messy. However, the quality of the ingredients is apparent. The texture and taste of these donuts is hard to beat.

Dinkel's has made some changes for the better. They've had more help at the counter lately, and they've been making more cinnamon buns, their best item. Good on them.

I don't come here often enough. I need to remedy that. Their baked goods are pretty awesome and I love to see the smiles that appear when I enter a party with a box full of their cupcakes. Mmmmm. Cupcakes. The service has been slow on occasion but it's always worth the wait!

Dinkel's is the Rolls Royce of American bakeries. It is my understanding that it has been in business for over 85 years. The carrot cake with cream cheese icing is beyond reproach and is the best outside my mother's kitchen that I have ever eaten. I have had lemon bars from Dinkel's that are, again, the best that I have ever eaten. I used to buy their boxed cookies at Bloomingdale's. Dinkel's is a bakery brand that could easily be marketed and sold nationally, because it seems to have a following of former Chicagoans and celebrities. THE best bakery in America!

One of the best bakeries in the district. Really cozy atmosphere for parents to give their kids a treat in the middle of a shopping Saturday morning. Much cheaper than Julius Meinl, although these are too entirely different concepts that I should not even compare. Great amenities in the area, including a really adorable art supplies store, a toy store within the same block, some very unique boutiques, etc...

I brought in a dozen of Dinkel's doughnuts to work today. I never had a Dinkel doughnut before. I now regret the good willed, yet impulsive, gesture to my coworkers. Why? Dinkel's has ruined all other doughnuts for me. Chewy, freshy, sweet...what a doughnut should be. And for a department that lets treats sit in the designated "food cube" for days, not one person had the willpower to resist a Dinkel doughnut. An hour later, all doughnuts were gone (and I only had one. I swear!)

First discovered this place at the Kris Kindle Market one winter and then realized... I drive by this place everyday on my way to work. So one day, I stopped in. This place has some amazing stuff. Their strudel is so good... and you can get frozen ones to take home. I got an apple and a cherry strudel to take home to my family. It was gone in a flash... I also got a Strawberry danish... it was good... pretty much your standard danish... And, if you spend more than $20, you get a free loaf of bread! Score!

I work on this street, so I frequent Dinkel's Bakery a lot. Every time I go I tell myself it'll be better than it was last time, but it never is. I'm giving this place three stars because its food isn't necessarily bad -- I just don't like it. The doughnuts and cookies are very mediocre, and the cakes are too heavy and sweet. The slice of strawberry cake I had the other day tasted like it was from Jewel Osco. I prefer lighter baked goods like the ones you can find in Chinatown. The bakery itself is nice, with a display case full of seriously stunning cakes out front, and the staff is always kind. I'm not down to pay higher-than-average prices for lower-than-average food, though.

I've been coming to this bakery since I was a kid, and I crave it whenever I'm in town. The pastries are so fresh and delicious and they have such a great selection to choose from. However, I have to agree with dorothy, as I have seen Mr. Dinkel mistreat his staff right in front of the customers. It sort of sucks the whole beautiful family friendly atmosphere right out of the place.

Dinkel's is your traditional, conventional bakery which has been around for a number of years. It's been around because their quality is consistent and very good. Great cakes, cookies, cupcakes and other items. Perfect place to pick up your holiday dessert.

Dinkels is nice, I've always gotten great service there - even when it's crazy busy (I don't know what possessed me to stop in on the day before Easter, but they were very organized despite being slammed). The cakes and pastries are good, but not spectacular. Their doughnuts are verrrry good. But the reason I stopped in was to try the cupcakes. I know all they have are chocolate and vanilla, which isn't exactly what we're looking for, but I thought it was worth a try. I thought the cake was very tasty, but the icing gave me a stomach ache. I think it's mainly because there was too much air or something in the icing. The boy didn't like anything to do with the cupcakes. Our search continues....

Did you ever walk into a mom'n'pop shop and just feel this attitude oozing out from everywhere, an attitude that says: "This is a mom'n'pop shop. Therefore, as part of the experience, you will get shitty service and everything will be overpriced."? Spare me. The cake is good. I repeat, the cake is good. But the frou frou is just not necessary. The aristocratic "Let them eat cake" attitude is soooo 1790's.

I ordered two pies from here a few day before Thanksgiving. The people who worked there were very nice and the pies were ready to go when I walked in. The pumpkin pie was delicious. I am not always a big fan of it, but this was so so good. The apple pie was also very good -- not too sweet as some apple pies can be. They were also very affordable. Everyone loved both of them. I will be back!

My husband and I were passing by this weekend. He got a danish and I got a Kolacky. I'm glad I read reviews prior to visit. I got a number as I entered. Service was quick and friendly. Our choices were pretty good will definitely go again to try something else.

First let me say I come here at least once a week because my grandson loves their chocolate doughnuts. With that said I have only had a good experience with only one person that works behind the counter,a nice young guy who always is friendly and willing to answer questions. The rest of them are slow, unfriendly and not in any hurry no matter how busy they are. Today I went in and didn't see cinnamon rolls which is my favorite, it was early so I asked if they had any because maybe they weren't out yet or maybe I didn't see them. Her response " what you see is what we have!" and gave me an annoyed look to go with the sarcastic delivery. This kind of service will keep me from coming back here. There is no customer service, no friendly faces, "no how can I help you"?, I also agree that they pick and choose when they use the number system so when you walk in you better take one just in case. How many chances can you give a place. If you like customer service go somewhere else because you won't find any here.

This place has old school bakery written all over it. The carrot cake will blow your mind as will the croissants. I give it 4 stars just for that. If you love buttercream icing like I do, this is your birthday cake place. The cupcakes are great, mini-cakes really. The donuts are good. In price, it beats the pants off Bittersweet, which i also love but think is overpriced. The eclairs are just meh..which is a shame because I love me some eclairs, maybe God is doing me a cosmic favor. The cookies are also meh. Also, I wish they had french bread in stock more since i hate walking all the way to the Whole Foods on Lincoln and feeling like a sucker for paying $4 for a baguette.

Dinkels needs to change its name to Delicious! Because thats what it really is. I have tried the ginger snap cookies as well as the chocolate chip butter cookies and believe me...I was in heaven when those hit my taste buds! It doesn't help that i live next door...I feel like I may gain a couple of pounds but I would definitely tell my friends to come here!

Excellent cake, excellent service. I had an overwhelming week and didn't have a chance to order the cake for my son's birthday. When I woke up on Sat. morning, I called immediately and they told me that they would be able to do the cake since I had called before 10 AM. The person was very helpful walking me through the options. The cake was ready for pick up on Sunday morning. The Elmo design looked wonderful. Everyone loved the cake, including the birthday boy... and now the cake will be forever engrained in our family photo album! Great job!

I have been going to Dinkel's for almost my entire life and now I live far away and I can say for sure that nothing beats it. My favorites vary but I can tell you that you will never have a better chocolate chip cookie. Be careful though. They are bite sized and easy to devour in seconds. The chocolate donuts are also a favorite. Dunked in their delicious fair-trade coffee (which by the way is much better quality than the Starbucks across the street. I'd go here for the coffee alone.) The croissants are also to die for. I'm salivating just thinking about it. I could really go on and on about all the goodies. The atmosphere here is great and the staff are always helpful and happy which is something that seems to be missing from most establishments these days. Unfortunately I live in LA now, but fortunately I can mail order!!! And whenever I am back in Chicago I make sure to take a trip to Dinkel's.

A delightful, old-school Chicago bakery. Their baked goods are scrumptious, though I've never found their staff to be particularly warm. It's a tease to have to pass by Dinkel's on your way to the YMCA or XSport fitness.

I thought it might be dangerous for me to live 2 blocks from this bakery, but somehow I manage to keep my visits in check; but don't let that fool you - these baked goods are delicious. Cakes, pastries, and cookies galore, it's hard to choose when you wander in, and often I find myself just asking the employees their to pick for me (yes, I am that guy). I am a sucker for Danishes and their cherry/cheese combo Danish is fantastic, and holds me over on those days when there are no real Danes (or others of Scandinavian descent) to cuddle up with on a cold Chicago day. Going with four stars simply because the interior is pretty dingy/dirty, but I suppose when you've been around forever, that can be expected (but not accepted!)

Dinkel's completely saved me in my slacker-ness. I waited until the very last minute to think about a cake for my boyfriend's birthday. Being relatively new to Chicago, I wasn't sure where I could get something really yummy and more importantly, quickly. I called Dinkel's on a Friday afternoon for delivery on Saturday--no problem! They delivered to a hotel we were staying at in the city, which was super convenient. But be prepared to pay a very hefty delivery fee. A steep $18... I opted for cupcakes instead of a cake--2 carrot cake and 2 chocolate. Both flavors were really tasty. Not the absolute best cupcake I've ever eaten, but quite good.

Dinkel's makes really delicious donuts. I also am in love with their apricot bran muffins. They're so good I initially wanted to give this place more stars. But when I went in to get a cake to celebrate Obama's triumph over the forces of evil, their only offerings were chocolate or yellow cake with chocolate or vanilla buttercream frost... ... ... ... ...frosting. Sorry, I fell asleep mid-word because I was so bored.

those who know me (or who follow me on yelp :) know i am usually going through some sort of intense and focused phase when it comes to my dessert preferences. either i'm at mandy b's eating cake, giant m&m or frosted sugar cookies, or their amazing banana cream pie, or i'm hitting mcdonald's or dairy queen for m&m mcflurry's and blizzards (mmm...the pumpkin pie blizzard is so good!). i have always been a fan of the doughnut but recently i have become overcome with intense, daily cravings for the amazing chocolate-frosted cake doughnuts made at dinkel's bakery. so much so that the past few weekends i have been waking up at 7:45am and driving there to get my fix (confession - the first sunday i did this i woke up at 6:45am, thinking for sure they'd be open because it's a bakery and it was sunday, only to find out they open at 8...so i sat in my car doing nothing for the better part of an hour - that, my friends, is commitment. my husband was only slightly horrified). i also tend to stop by dinkel's to get a doughnut as an afternoon snack - and i often have them for dessert after dinner. doughnuts - for dessert! crazy! moving on, sour cream doughnuts and chocolate-frosted cake are definitely the way to go at dinkel's. the yeast doughnuts are not so good (i'm looking at you, seemingly delicious-looking chocolate-frosted long john), which is why i docked them a star. the custard-filled doughtnuts are pretty tasty, mostly because of the custard and the amazing chocolate frosting. cheese flakies are good, as are the danishes. OH - and the seasonal apple cider cake doughnut is very, very good. my mouth is watering. good thing i currently have a chocolate-frosted waiting for me in my freezer. yes, you can freeze doughnuts and then defrost them when a craving hits. i just wish i would have known that last weekend when i came home with a box of 8 doughnuts and fought a daylong battle to leave no doughnut uneaten. it wasn't pretty. but it was delicious. and that, my fellow yelpers, is why i love dinkel's.

One of my first objectives when I moved back to Chicago was to find a bakery. I stumbled (literally) across Dinkel's one night and decided it was going to be the first stop the next morning. I hit the door at 7AM and knew it was going to be good, there were at least 15 people waiting. When it was my turn, I had to ask about all the different coffee cakes (which didn't make me very popular because now there were 15 regulars behind me...too bad. I ordered 2 raspberry and 2 cream cheese coffee cakes, a dozen croissants and found some German Stollen in the cooler. I took everything in to the bullpen area at my office; before I got back from my office with a cup of coffee almost all the coffee cakes were gone. It's a good thing I was planning on the croissants for my breakfast. The croissants weren't as buttery and flaky as I get in Belgium or France but what the hey they were fresh and in hand. The coffee cake pastries were very light and flakey; the fruit was sweet and tart. I didn't get to taste the cream cheese...but the pastry looked the same. The Stollen was great just enough fruit and light cake to sit down and eat about half a loaf while watching the Bulls game. Oh yeah, the Stollen was cold so I forgot to take it into the office with everything else. I give Dinkels 4 stars because of the Stollen if nothing else! Dinkel's is a keeper but I'm still looking for a shop with a better bread selection!

I was having a not-so-great day last week, so my boyfriend cheered me up with a cupcake from Dinkel's. It worked like a charm; the creamy buttercream frosting, the dense cake, the sprinkles..... there was no way I could have been sad after eating it. I felt like I needed another fix, so we stopped in on the way home from work yesterday. It was my first visit, and I loved it from the moment I entered. The smell alone was enough to make me salivate. And the selection was incredible! I could barely stop myself from ordering one of EVERYTHING in the place. Besides a couple more cupcakes (my favorite is the chocolate with vanilla frosting), I also purchased some butter cookies with sprinkles. Which were absolutely melt-in-your-mouth perfect. (Though a little pricey..... $10.95 a pound?!) The jam thumbrints and the spritz cookies with the cherry in the middle were delicious too. Yum yum yum! (I am cringing a little at the thought of using the phrase 'yum yum yum' in a review, but it's really as eloquent as I can get right now.) I also helped myself to a brownie sample. And a donut sample. I'm giving both a big thumbs up. (I was tempted to buy some brownies, especially since they were 2 of $1.69, but I already felt guilty about all the cupcakes. Next time.) Still, despite all this good stuff, I have two complaints: One, the woman behind the counter was a little surly. Which struck me as odd; how can you not be cheerful when you work in bakery? Two, the minimum for a credit/debit card purchase is $20. I rarely carry cash, so I would have been (sadly) out of luck had my boyfriend not been there with a wallet full of money. Luckily my love of baked goods can overcome these slight annoyances. I will definitely be back.

Do not waste your time considering Dinkel's for your wedding cake. They wasted two weeks of our time telling us that they were taking care of the insurance certificate (required by most venues). Eventually the owner called my fiance and was so rude on the phone she started crying. It was my idea to use a local bakery near our home and I couldn't be more disappointed. Also, in regards to style they can't come close to competing with other bakeries in the city.

"So much chocolate I saw through time" My brother-in-law was having a surprised birthday party, and no one including me had any idea where to get a cake fast. Here comes in Dinkel. They had a great spread of ready made cakes, which you can quickly personalize for any occasion. Since he is of the chocolate persuasion I got the Fudge Brownie, soooo much chocolate. That cakes plus a cup of coffee, kept me up for literally 24 hours, I ran around my apartment like a hamster on speed. Overall very nice bakery, with a good selection of cakes and other fun pastry items.

I can't say that the baked goods are out of this world, and the dark roast coffee is just fine, but Dinkel's has quickly become a weekend morning ritual for me and my sister even though we don't even live in the neighborhood. It's just simple and good.

After Chicago Bites rated Dinkel's vanilla vanilla cupcake tops in Chicago, I knew I had to include it on my own cupcake crawl. Even though the name Dinkel's got lots of laughs, once we ate the cupcakes, we weren't laughing anymore. This is good stuff. Both the vanilla and the chocolate cakes were moist and delicious. The vanilla buttercream on the vanilla cupcake was a little sweet, but made for a great combination with the cake. The chocolate frosting, however, was a bit much for both of us - too thick, too sweet, and too much! Once we scraped off about 2/3 of it, the cupcake was just about perfect. We figure that a chocolate cupcake with the vanilla buttercream would pretty much be an ideal cupcake! Updated 12/4/07: I got some Dinkel's cupcakes to go last Friday while I was killing time waiting for Scooter's to open (have to hit up my frozen custard place on the last day of the season!). We didn't get around to eating any of them until Saturday, but they were even better than the first ones that we got! SO moist and delicious and flavorful. The chocolate ones were great, but the vanilla were oh-my-goodness so good. And cheap. Yum.

Wow. I happened to be in the neighborhood and stopped by this bakery. The selection is vast. I got a cannoli, a donut, an eclair and napoleon. I brought these delightful treats home to my family and they were devoured within a 1/2 hour. Everything was delicious. No Crisco used here! The cannoli's were so good, the next morning, I traveled all the way back to get 4 more.

Actually, it's a 4.5. Dinkel's, in a word, rocks. This is where I get my birthday cakes for others and insist that the birthday cakes for ME are made! My personal favorite is a chocolate cake with chocolate mousse filling, buttercream frosting and oreos on top. I'm in heaven! Their baked goods are pretty good, too. The brownie is more fudgelike, and the cupcakes are just like their regular cakes, but smaller (just as they should be!) I also had a great banana-spelt muffin once that was so good there's no way it was healthy. Yay for old school bakeries!

Even though I grew up near Swedish Bakery, and lived around the corner from Lutz (in "Lutz Valley") Dinkel's is the bakery I used to go to with my dad when I was a kid, and all the German ladies who worked there would give me cookies and speak to me in German. Times have changed in the last 25 years, but I still order lamb cakes from there at Easter, and will stop in for cookies and sweets when in the neighborhood. Let's face it, nowadays when you can get a wedding cake at Jewel, and Costco provides bakery fresh decorated cakes at deep discounts, any local bakery is going to seem pricey. Here is the North Side Bakery Run Down, courtesy of me: Whole Package: Dinkel's Breads and cool frog-thingies: Swedish Marzipan Art: Lutz Cookies: Rudy's Enjoy. You're at a bakery for crying out loud, things can't be that bad.

Octogenarian Heaven!! Seriously, old people know what's up. On the day I went in here The Olde Tyme Coffee Klatch was sitting around in here sipping black coffee, eating cinnamon buns, talking pleasantly about Gladys's hip replacement and Josef's rheumatism. It kind of made me want to get old and have a million problems and be best friends with my doctor. But that's for another day. I was first lured in here because I loved the art-deco facade (try saying that aloud without sounding like a twat) and just the fact that it's called "Dinkel's". Rhymes with tinkles!!! AHHH!!!! Ahem. I knew Dinkel's was going to be Old School Fabbaluss... and it sure was. Ya know, as drainpipey as my jeans may be, I can still get fucking annoyed with vegan cupcakes, gluten-free rugelach, vanilla soy ice chai latte, free wifi, tattooed barista, Teagan and Sara, organic fairtrade, poetry night bullplop. Yanowuhimsayin? Uh huh. Give me a sugar cookie with happy face frosting and some freakin' Folgers. Dinkel's reminds me of a bigger version of my home town bakery. Nothing all that fancy, just honest to goodness stuff. So I picked up a German chocolate cake. Great. Thing weighs about 10 pounds and tastes wunderbar. I also picked up some birthday candles for babydaddy. Convenient! Not really all that close to me, but Lincoln Ave. between Belmont and Addison is starting to turn into a kind of wonderland for me so I don't mind the haul. Worth it.

For a going away party for someone the museum order these as the treat. First off, anything besides the usual sheet cake is awesome! I'll even take a cookie at this point. But I about fell over when the boxes were opened to show the largest cupcakes I have ever seen! Amazing!! I would go to these more often if people brought stuff like this! They were moist and amazing. Even had a few cookies on the side that were delightful! I had to grab the name and address off the box (a bike ride away - yeah!). Only had chocolate and vanilla cupcakes (the basics but good) and can't wait to try some others and actually go into the business b/c they've already sold me!!

The doughuts, pies and cookies are delicious! I ordered pies from Dinkel's a few years ago for Thanksgiving and unfortunately they sold me pies which had been in the oven too long. I love having a real bakery in the neighborhood, so that I do not have to rely on grocery store bakeries.

Dinkel's is one of those grand old bakeries. I have been here a handful of times and every time I've come away with something delicious. A couple of years ago I got one of their lamb cakes. It was a huge hit and I bet it was made with real ingredients as opposed to the supermarket bakeries that have all kinds of chemicals you can't even pronounce! Go Dinkel's. Sometimes there is a line, but it's well worth it.

Man was I disappointed... My mom had told me that Dinkel's was good and I was jonesing for a fruit tart, so I went to Dinkel's. Not only did they not have a fruit tart (wtf kind of bakery doesn't sell those?), the line was beastly long, and full of pushypushy Europeans. I would expect that at a bakery in Lincoln Square, not Lincoln Avenue. I ended up settling for a strawberry preserve cupcake. My dissatisfaction for it was my fault, though, because I didn't realize the implication of "preserve". I forgot that that meant "jam". So I went into it expecting fresh strawberries, and I got jam. In the middle of my cupcake. That was just weird. (Is that a normal thing to do with cakes? I've never even heard of jam inside cake.) Anyway, the cake itself was good, but I thought the frosting was far too rich. I did get Dinkel's "famous" hot chocolate. That was really good. Realllllyyyy good. Real chocolate mixed with milk topped with whipped cream. The perfect thing for a bitterly cold day like yesterday. I would come back here for more hot chocolate, but probably not for dessert. Lutz's for the win!

Extremely good cupcakes and doughnuts. My friend dragged me here as it is a bit out of my stomping grounds. Bought my grandma a slice of pound cake which made her very happy until she realized it was Dinkle's. Then she slapped me for not getting her one of the old time doughnuts. Oh Well I tried.

I am lucky enough to pass this bakery every morning on my way to work, and would stop in to get myself a danish/cookie if I didn't care about the pounds I would gain from doing so. I have tried the danishes, iced cookies (you know the decorated ones), cupcakes and brownies! Everything I have had has been fresh and delicious! I have brought the danishes to my office and people rave about them. I would agree that the frosting on the cupcakes is a little much, but if you try to eat it equally with the cake part, that evens it out a little bit. Their cakes look nicely decorated in the window too, but I haven't tried one. I have heard about the popularity of the lamb cakes though and will have to try one at Easter!

This bakery has your basic baked goods...nothing to write home about, but if you are near to the bakery I can see how it could be a morning routine thing. The staff there is not particulary welcoming...I guess when you think of a bakery in the traditional sense you think of a stout little old lady or man in an apron with rosey cheeks and always has a smile on thier face no matter what-this is not that sort of place - SAD :(

I love Dinkel's croissants, cookies, tartes, cakes, pretty much everything! Their coffee is fantastic. It is probably the perfect Saturday/ Sunday morning spot. The line can be a bit intimidating, but they really keep things moving. I have never ordered something from here, so I can't speak about that. But the service and quality on their ready made goods is phenomenal. I'll be back (as often as my waistline will allow it!).

As you walk into Dinkel's the sweet smell of pastries just tickles your nose. There is nothing really "fancy" about their pastries, but they never disappoint. I am particular to their danishes--their nut danish is very tasty. I also recommend their chocolate silk pie. We order two every Christmas.

This is the place to go to when you want the old school - classic bakery goods. Warning: only enter if you're ready to blow you're diet! I thought I was going to die just looking at the amazing bakery items - the chocolate donuts... YUM-MO:) I bought a chocolate mousse cake here for Mother's Day last year and my 80 year old Grandmother who is a chocolate cake connoisseur believes that it is was the best chocolate cake she has ever had. The frosting was just AMAZING. What's especially great about this bakery is that it is open on Sundays and they have an amazing selection of fresh cakes and baked goods in stock that you don't have to order. I was able to walk in and pick out a cake (from a wide variety of choices) and then have them write whatever I wanted on it (complimentary). So you can never go wrong with Dinkels! Unless you're watching that stomach...

Having just moved to Chicago, I often drove by Dinkel's and envisioned it as the quintessential vintage Chicago bakery. One day I made it a point to stop by. What I found was your average bakery with very little inventory and no ambiance. The bakery item I ordered was just okay- but not worth stopping for again. I'd save my pennies for Lutz's instead.

If you miss bakeries from back in the day then you need to go into Dinkel's. They appreciate good service because thats what they are all about and always have been. The prices aren't bad at all and what you get for what you pay is even better and sweeter! Literally! The cookies are amazing!!! The cakes are great and the attention you get from the staff is even better. Even when its crowded you'll get a smile and the best services.

i ordered an easter lamb cake and confirmed via email if it could be made with no coconut, i was assured it could three days before easter i was told it could not be i decided i would try it just the same when i picked up the cake - it was a joke the smallest lamb cake i ever saw and for 12.98 - i was ripped off i had to scramble for another cake to go along for 17.00 i can get one double that size and have cake left over at a store closer in the burbs dinkels is not worth my time or money with the economy the way it is the owner should consider making the cust happy when they request no coconut - it was a simple request.

I used to be addicted to this place for year, now I step in about once a month. The staff is not the friendliest in the world and the cookies are awful. The cupcakes, brownies, and upside down pineapple cake are to die for. I just think they need to make better tasting cookies and hire happy people to work for them. Overall a good place to go to, but maybe they should step up their game just a tad bit?

I have been getting birthday cakes and baked goods at Dinkel's for over 15 years and always loved their buttercream frosting with both white and chocolate cake. I ordered a cake several weeks ago for my son's birthday; we had made Angry Birds out of fondant and just wanted a plain cake to put them on. An undecorated cake (with only writing--Happy Birthday) cost the same as a regular decorated cake. Block writing in blue was specified and we received script writing in black and blue. We ordered buttercream and it really didn't taste like the rich, buttery frosting I've loved from Dinkel's. It was 2 hours before the party when I was putting the fondant decorations on that I discovered this, so I called them and explained the mistake with the writing (which I was willing to overlook, not a big deal) and that I ordered buttercream but this tasted very bland and I wondered if it was whipped cream. The response was "well, our buttercream is not like other places, it's not sickly sweet." I told them I was very aware of what their buttercream was like, having been a happy customer for over 15 years, and that this frosting had no hint of butter taste in it whatsoever. The manager told me I could bring the cake back; but I had a party in 2 hours and if I did that, I'd have no cake for it. She said that if, after the party, I brought some of the cake back for them to "examine" they could make a determination about "whether a mistake has been made" and that "we can tell if it's buttercream or whipped cream just by looking at it." I brought a piece back and was told that the manager would "talk to my boss and we have your number and someone will call you back." No one ever called me back. A few days later, I called and spoke to a man who identified himself as "the owner" and was brusque and pretty rude. He also told me how their buttercream is not sickly sweet, that "I haven't seen this piece of cake you said you brought in," and that the best thing he could do "IF we made a mistake" is refund the price difference between buttercream and whipped cream ($11). I said I thought their policy was that they guaranteed the cakes for any reason and he said "yeah, but you have to bring the cake back." I'm not sure how you're supposed to do that if you order a cake for an occasion and pick it up the same day of that occasion. "Well, I've been doing this for 45 years, so I know a little bit about this and I haven't figured out a way to do it more fair, it doesn't seem fair for you to get to keep the whole cake AND get all your money back does it?" I said that maybe half off and a better attitude certainly would have gone a long way to keeping me as a customer. We hung up with his promise to investigate and call me back. A week went by and no word. I called again and neither the woman I originally spoke with or the owner were there. The person who answered the phone promised to find the manager I spoke with and have him call me back within an hour. No call for several days. I called back and asked for the women I talked to; she called me back about an hour later and said "Yes, a decision has been made. We did not make a mistake on the frosting, it was buttercream, but they did do the writing wrong. We can offer you 20% off a FUTURE order. Your name will be in the credit box at the register." Well, I don't think I'll be taking them up on it. I understand that mistakes happen, but if that is what their buttercream now tastes like and that is their idea of customer service, when I want to splurge in both money and calories on a rich, buttercream cake, I'll take my business to a place where I know that the indulgence will be worth it.

I didn't really like this place, but I may have gone in on a bad day. They didn't have much in the way of a variety of single-slice cake available; it was Mother's Day, but it was also only about one in the afternoon. The only cakes they have had 'regular' frosting (I can't think of another name for it) - they didn't have anything with a lighter frosting or even a buttercream frosting, which seems to have a fluffier texture. I really don't like frosting, so that was a problem for me - I didn't like the cake I had. Their pastries looked really good, but we didn't pick any up. I may give this another try sometime, but I may head back to Lutz's or continue on my search for the perfect bakery (or the near perfect bakery; my perfect bakery is Sweet Life back home in Oregon).

I love this bakery! They have amazing cupcakes. The frosting is what makes it! When it comes to frosting, most people either love itor hate it. I HATE frosting (its just yucky!) but they have delicious frosting. All of their cakes, pastries, and cookies are delicious, but they have the best cupcakes!

Wow. There are already so many great reviews. I'll just add mine. I called them on a Tuesday to order a cake for Friday morning. That was no problem. I had a design idea in mind and had found something online that worked, so Vilma at the bakery told me to email it to her. I didn't hear anything after that, but when I picked up the cake on Friday, I was blown away. What they had done was even better than the image I had sent. Besides that, for $45, the double-layer buttercream cake would serve at least 12 people (hard to tell because we're still eating it!). Thank you for coming through for us, Dinkel's!

The pretzels are decent but overall, the selection here isn't too great. This is the kind of bakery where portions are large, but the food itself is kind of mediocre. I love donuts but was hoping they'd have more to offer than your typical Dunkin' Donuts types.

I went here to use a Groupon. I got a cinnamon roll, some brownies for my boyfriend, a ham and swiss sandwich, and some danish. I didn't try the brownies but the cinnamon roll was very good. The sandwich was just okay and the danish that I had were pretty good as well. I wanted to try the cookies but I don't know what happened with that. I guess my experience here was okay but I would like to go back to try some things that I didn't get to try the first time.

Dinkel's is a full service bakery and has been here for years. On my quest for the perfect cupcake, I found here a massive basic cupcake with really good frosting. You get your standard combos of vanilla cake with butter cream or chocolate frosting and chocolate cake with the same frosting options. I only wish the frosting tasted more like butter cream and did not leave your mouth feeling coated. The most remarkable characteristic of these cupcakes is the size and the price. For all the boutique cupcake shops out there, Dinkel's has the best cupcake for the price and I think they offer a deal on Tuesdays or Wednesdays on cupcakes. Seriously, the regular price for a cupcake at least twice the size of any other cupcake in town is around $2 with tax.

Not a place to have a cake tasting! My sister, her fiance and I went there for a cake tasting last weekend and it was one of the most depressing/horrible experiences. Imagining what I would want my first cake tasting to be- it was not an excitement at all. We get there and this high schooler comes to our service. We tell her we have a cake tasting and she tells us to go sit down and grab some coffee/tea/water and that she'll bring over the cakes. There were 3 different cakes to try and then she gave us this plastic platter with 3 different cremes/icings and some type of raspberry preserve. They were missing the bananas and fresh strawberries we had asked for too. She brought us some old looking frozen strawberry mix that tasted awful. She told us she would be back in a couple of minutes to see what we liked. Everything was way too rich and not fresh at all. We sat there for about 20 minutes waiting for her to come back and she casually walks by and is like, "do you guys have any questions?" And we replied, "no." So she walked away. We got up and left. Obviously, they do not want our business and we most definitely do not want theirs. We'll stick to more upscale bakeries--- mmmm like Three Tarts in Northfield, IL. Conclusion: I advise you not to give your business to them.

Ordered a Black Forest Cake for an Okoberfest party I had. I figured the Ol' neighboood German bakery would have something amazing and way better than I could make myself. Really, it was not that great, kinda dry and quite pricey. I was hoping for a WOW factor from this cake and it just wasn`t there.

Fantastic coffee (so I hear), cakes and pastries to die for. My parents always order cakes from them for the many family parties they put on, so we've sampled plenty. Was so glad they took care of that *ahem* problem because they sell fresh quality baked goods.

When I'm here I don't really care about service as much as getting my chocolate frosted donut or sugar cookie fix. They may as well be working the corner with those donuts - "I got that chocolate frosted". I bust in there like Omar and ask 'em to hand over the stash. Chocolate donuts ain't got no owners, only eaters.

I am so lucky that Dinkel's isn't in my neighborhood or I would probably be there three times a day! And then that would be 7 days a week at the gym! And nobody likes that! I have had Dinkel's cakes many times at the children's place where I used to work. I tried many many different bakeries while working there, and that means eating cake about two or three times a weekend. So I think I am a pretty good expert on cake, sad as that may be! And Dinkel's is one of my favorites! And to quote Goldilocks, their cake to me is just right! Not to super sweet and on the flip side, not bland. And most recently, I have been introduced, thanks to my husband, to their magnificent doughnuts! Holy Moly people! This is THE best doughnut I have ever had! And I am very picky about my doughnuts. I prefer the vanilla doughnut with the chocolate icing. But the doughnuts can't be too fluffy like the krispy cream glazed dougnuts (ick), I like it to be more packed and the frosting can't be over powering it has to compliment the cake part of the doughnut, not dominate. I know that sounds crazy, but guess what? I found my perfect doughnut so who's crazy now?! The doughnut is just like I described it, it is all perfectly balanced and when you are finished you aren't sick to your stomach from sweet, you only crave more. Homer Simpson would wet himself if he got a hold of a Dinkel's doughnut. They are 5 star doughnuts. You must try them! They don't look like they will knock you out of the park, but don't judge a sweet by it's unassuming appearance. It packs a powerful punch that will send your tastes buds soaring! And your mind racing for a way to reason with yourself for eating three more at one sitting. Go. Get a doughnut. Now! PS the reason for only a total of 4 stars is because I haven't tried many of their other products yet, and I know that their cakes can be a little pricey. We thought about using them for our wedding cake a while back but we found a better deal else where.

The decision has been made - Dinkel's has the best brownies. They are soft, chewy, have chocolate chips inside and fudge on top - the best! especially when they are served warm at the christkindlmarket in front of the richard J daley center. Dinkel's also has great layer cake - buttercream of course with jimmies and cupcakes that are just as good.

Ordered a birthday cake thru their website and got a response immediately. Cake was delicious and the picture they transposed onto it was perfect as well. Great place for cakes, and based on when I picked up the cake - the cookies, muffins, bread, and cupcakes all look damn good too.

I ventured into Dinkel's after reading the Yelp reviews. I was in the need of some fresh baked pastry items for a family party. I stopped in on a Saturday morning and it was a little busy with people picking up cakes and such. I was helped within 5 minutes of arriving (make sure to grab a number by the door). The selection was decent and the prices were average. Unfortunately, I didn't get to try any of the cookies myself but I also purchased some bread to take home for lunch and it was ok- a bit dry. Nothing outstanding, nothing blah- just average experience for me.

DO NOT USE Dinkel's ONLINE CAKE ORDERING! Unless you want to see the crestfallen look on your 5-year-old's face when you come out of the bakery on the way to her birthday party WITH NO BIRTHDAY CAKE!!! She sat on my lap 4 days before her party and selected the Wizard of Oz cake because she wanted a "scary" birthday cake (not really sure why) with Dorothy and the Wicked Witch. I submitted the order and it apparently then DISAPPEARED into the ether. (Full accountability, I did not write "For pick-up" in the comment section because I was so busy trying not to forget to mention the Wicked Witch since she was an integral part of this cake for some reason). However, I did select the pick up date and pick up time. I realized the night before with a sinking feeling that the bakery never called to confirm the order, but resoned that maybe they didn't have any questions about it. I went there in the morning and waited and waited, and waited more as staff talked amongst themselves about not having the cake order, much less a cake. As the birthday party is about to start, I am informed that there is no cake and no one offers me any alternative. Luckily daddy had prepped the birthday girl that there was a problem about the cake and by the time I stormed out of the bakery empty-handed, my 5-year-old apologizes to ME!!! The worst part is that I sent an upset email to Sandy at Dinkel's explaining the situation and my frustration, mostly asking then to correct the glitch so this doesn't happen to other families, and I hear NOTHING back. So disappointed. How could their baked goods be so delicious and their service so appallingly bad??

I'm not normally a fan of bakeries because I'm not a huge sweets fan, but this place is pretty cool. They have tasty Eclairs, and coffee that pours out really fast(I found that out the hard way though). The only thing is that they get so busy it gets confusing in there, I thought they were talking to me to come buy our stuff a couple times, but they were talking to someone else.

I haven't been to this place personally, but my parents bought me a chocolate frosting cake from here for my birthday, and I was very impressed. Though I appreciate cake, I am not a cake-slut and will not settle just for any cake. When I decide that a cake is good, best believe that I really mean it. I hadn't had a good cake in a while until this place. My cake was so rich in chocolate but not overwhelming. Sweet but not sugary sweet. The fluffiness of the cake had the perfect density, and and top of this delishciousness, they covered the surface of the cake with a layer of melted chocolate and had brownies going around the cake. It was simply just perect. I'm curious as to what this place looks like. After reading several positive reviews, I am eager to try their donuts which I'm rarely a fan of. I will make a visit here soon enough and will post further reviews. If everything here is the same quality as the cake my parents bought me, then I can vouch that this might be one of the best pastry places in town. Mmmm....

I live just around the corner from Dinkel's and have been meaning to stop in for months now, and I finally did over the weekend. My mom and brother were in town visiting, so we dropped by for a snack before heading downtown. There was a loot more to choose from than I expected! My brother got the apple danish, and my mom got an eclair. They both had good things to say about their choices, so much so that they wouldn't even share a bite with me. I chose the "extra fun" cupcake. (Me choosing a cupcake? How surprising). I assume this cupcake changes often, but the day we went it was elmo! It was also the last one, and chocolate, both things that made me a little nervous about how it would taste. It was actually really good. Very moist, and chocolately, but not overboard. I could have used a little less frosting, but that's my own fault for choosing the one made to look like a puppet, haha. I noticed that they had dairy-free cookies while I was in there, which I thought was awesome. They had so many things that I want to try, but never could in one sitting, so I think i need to start coming here for breakfast a few times a week!

Great stuff here, especially the donuts and breakfast pastries. One poster complained about the inventory. I have to admit, I haven't been recently but they always used to get cleaned out (especially of their best stuff, like donuts and the apple danishes) early on weekend mornings. This happens at other bakeries but more frequently at Dinkel's.

Who ordered the attitude!!?? For my son's 2nd birthday I SCRAMBLED to find a cake as my family from NY decide last minute to fly in for my baby's milestone B-day. I called DInkels early in the day and was told they had plenty of sheet cakes and there was no need to place an order. Great, as I had so much running around to do. I arrived about 2 ours before they closed and asked to see the sheet cakes. The two teenage girls behind the counter exchanged looks as to who would have to assist me!! I asked again about sheet cakes. I told them it could be generic just NOT pink ( boy's b-day) I was finally stuck with a HUGE sheet cake as everything else was way too small (made to serve 5-6) I asked if they could personalize the cake with "Happy 2nd Birthday (my son's name) " When the girl presented the aake to me it simpl ysaid HAPPY BIRTHDAY and was very sloppy. The cake looked horrible. All in all the cake tasted great, the service was horrible. I may go back but only if different staff is on duty

The last remaining throw back to when this stretch of Lincoln Ave was a destination for little me and my German immigrant Mom in the 70s... My memories of Kuhn's and Meyer deli are much stronger than of this place, but I do enjoy this place now as an adult. This is my go-to place come Christmas time for a Stollen or two- I'm a stollen addict and theirs is very good, the cake part is more buttery than most. Stands up well to competition with my two other favorite stollens- the cheap boxed one they sell at Aldi, and the Marzipan one I mailorder from New-Glarus Bakery. This place is special and deserves your business every now and then.

Ok, my review has strictly to do with customer service (never actually tasted the product). Ordered a cake over the phone. I wanted a basic white cake with minimal writing and a Canadian flag on it.....it was Canada day eh. So the woman I spoke with on the phone agreed that they could take a base cake from their case ($14.95) and add writing and a flag (extra $7). She checked with someone "upstairs" and this would be the cost. I wasn't feeling well the next day so called to pay for it and planned to have a friend pick it up. They wouldn't take my card over the phone. So I go out myself to pick up the cake. I am presented with a $30 bill. So it's only $8 more but it's the principle of it. They made some excuse about the woman I spoke with being new (of course she wasn't there), blah, blah. The end result, they wouldn't honour the price I was given. I am a principle based guy so walked out. They seemed shocked that I wasn't taking the cake. No pun intended. Bought a decorated cake (yes even with the Canuck flag) at Jewel for $10. Much better price/value ratio and fantastic customer service.

It's an old school, take-a-number, yummy icing, happy face cookie kind of place and I LOVE IT. Everything is made fresh in the back of the store. The store has been there since time began so you won't find champagne flavored cupcakes or a polk-a-dot ribbon tying off your purchase. They even have a cheesy, Barbie-doll cake display in the window - you know the one...a mound of cake (the dress) with a Barbie doll sticking out of the top of it...and voila, there you have a Barbie cake. It's not a boutique or place to be seen..it's an old style bakery and it's worth stopping in for a taste of nostalgia and a delicious treat.

Good Pastries, although a bit under stocked in the afternoon, but I guess you'd expect that from a bakery. Attendants have an attitude sometimes, but I think some people enjoy that edgy feel...they warm up over time. Overall they are a good hometown choice for pastries. Nice to have a bakery in the Urban town area.

Not sure if there are better donuts in the city than at Dinkels. It's old-school and some of the best donuts you're going to find. Sure there might be some far out burb places worth trying but nothing in the city compares to a donut and coffee at this gem!

Dinkel's is what you make of it. They wouldn't have stayed in business in all these years if their goods weren't up to par, but I would say that the earlier in the day you get there the better it's going to taste. This is especially true with the donuts. If you get there early enough they have these croissants that have cheese and then spinach, turkey, or ham in the middle. Those little buggers are a delight! Also, I saw that one reviewer said that the service they got was just plain rude. I'm sure you encountered one particular woman that's always nasty. Everyone else is super friendly, but leave it to that witch to ruin everyone else's day. Anytime she's taken my order I take satisfaction that she hates her life and I'm eating a yummy brownie.

Dinkel's ( dinkels.com ) is a landmark on the Chicago bakery scene, serving up delicious pastries in its West Lakeview neighborhood since 1922. Family owned and operated, they continue to make tasty treats "just like Grandma made" - cakes, bundts, brownies, breakfast pastries, their awesome butter cookies, and their famous "Stollen" (a type of sweet German bread/cookie, ladden with fruit and nuts - NOT to be mistaken with fruitcake!), pies and more. The staff is friendly, even when the place is incredibly busy (as it often is); in warm weather, you can relax with your coffee and snack at the outdoor seating. They do a wide variety of custom cakes, from simple layer cakes, to colorful birthday cakes, to amazing wedding creations. If you like old-fashioned baked goods, it's hard to go wrong here.

Dinkel's is the cutest little bakery. Great danish, fudgey brownies, cakes, cookies all the real deal. I go to the gym on Sundays just so I can reward myself with an apple pastry. Kind of defeats the purpose but I do it anyway.

i feel the need to update my review due to one of the owners contacting me directly. He was very nice and offered his apologies and to try to gain my business back. Too often when neighborhoods like West Lakeview go yuppified, old fashioned mom-n-pop-style operations like Dinkels will sell out & disappear forever. Thank goodness they are still around & going strong, I often order birthday/holiday cakes from them, and I visit frequently in December when they sell big platters & boxes of Christmas butter cookies - you might be surprised at how fast you & your friends & family can consume one of their 3-pound cookie platters!

fantastic cake!!! i bought a chocolate one and it was the absolute moistest cake i have ever consumed. oddly enough-the chocolate frosting on the cake tasted better than the same frosting on the cupcake. weird. but the frosting finished clean and did not leave that gross aftertaste that cheap, crappy buttercream has the ability to do. it was a great experience and i will definitely be back for more!

I love supporting local businesses and I live nearby Dinkels. Sadly, I haven't always gotten the freshest pastries when I have been in there. It's surprising too b/c there is always a line outside the door first thing in the morning on the weekends. I have given it several tries in hopes that it was a fluke but I just don't think that they're baking fresh everyday and that's what I'm paying for, not the Dinkels name.

Today was the first time I stopped by here. Went for some morning coffee and a doughnut. They were both delicious! The coffee is organic fair trade - I had French Roast. So not only is it good, but great for the enviroment and the workers on the coffee fields as well! I got a cheese bear claw and it was probably the best one I've ever tasted. The service was quick and efficient. I highly recommend this place!

WARNING!: PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT Let it be known the sour cream donuts are made with crack....CRACK! The good kind too! Eat a few of these and kiss your family, your job, your waistline, and all your cares in the world goodbye. Damn I want one right now.

We set out to find this gem on the day before Christmas and were not disappointed! The atmosphere is old-world bakery and the smells amazing!! Our biggest trouble was deciding what to purchase among the hundreds of treats in those cases!! Donuts, croissants, cookies, pies ..... we came away with plenty of goodies for our holiday celebration. The counter staff were quick and pleasant, especially considering the onslaught of last minute shoppers before the holiday!! Kudos to a well run place!!

I finally got to this place after living in the neighborhood for half a year. I was delighted! GREAT selection, wonderful daily specials (especially the 3 donuts for roughly $2 on Wednesdays), and the baked goods themselves? VERY fresh and tasty. Their cake donuts are nearly perfect- they have a light, buttery consistency. Mmmmm. The danishes are out of this world, and their cinnamon buns were also terrific. Now I just need to sample their cookies! It's all too easy to become a Kirstie Alley with a fine bakery like this nearby. Sure, some bakeries have better prices, but you get what you pay for. Just watch and see the 8 gazillion old codgers like up every day: they know what it's all about!

Dinkle's Bakery is close to my home. Street parking is easy to find. I always get the butter cookies and I have tried some of the breakfast items. The cookies are delish. Whether there is creme on the inside or chocolate covered with sprinkles, it satisfies my sweet tooth.
