I was so pleased to find this restaurant and learn they can serve the meatball and sausage sandwiches without the bread. Hurray! My ancestry is from northern Europe so breads and pastas slow me down rather than fuel me up. The marinara sauce on each was tasty without being overpowering. The sausage was mildly flavored and highly nourishing without feeling fatty. I had a salad without the pasta, which was good but uneventful. As others have said, it was the best meatballs and sausage I ever have tasted. I came on a humid 90-degree day in early September. The air conditioning was adequate but not industrial strength. On days like this, be sure to wear only a cotton shirt and pants and no jacket here.

Solid lunch spot in the loop and wish I would have known about it when my office was closer. They have pretty limited hours. We arrived shortly after 11:30 to avoid the long lines as it can take a bit to order food. It is great to support a local mom and pop spot and it feels like you are taking a step back in time. They do take credit cards now which is nice and there is more seating upstairs. The chicken parm sandwich was very tasty and huge. I was impressed that the bread mostly withstood the marinara sauce. The cottage fries were good but I would recommend sharing because the portions are huge. I also wish they were a bit crispier. It was just was about $13 a person with a drink.

Decor 5 stars. Grace under pressure: 5 stars. I arrived at 11:30--a bit early to beat the Loop crowd right? But as Fortuna's wheel spun, a crowd of (I kid you not) 25 office workers popped in for a group order. Why didn't they order in advance? You'd have to ask their Leader. The line led all the way back to the door. Typing this, I don't know why I stood behind them. I guess this unexplainable scenario can only be a testament to the excellence of their Combination Italian Beef Sausage. The whole staff exuded good will under pressure, which just goes to show that it isn't merely the decor that's Old Chicago.

The first 2 times I went, I got the smoked turkey on focaccia, and it was really good. The 3rd time I went, they were out of focaccia, so that was disappointing. The next time, I stood in line and saw the worker making sandwiches pulling out focaccia bread to make an order, and noted that there was more there. When I ordered, the guy says they're all out of focaccia, without looking back or checking. I'm a bit dumbfounded since I'd just seen that there was some. So I don't know if/why they're denying some people their focaccia

Stopped by this hidden little mom and pop Italian restaurant near Union Station and asked the owner for a recommendation on her favorite sandwiches (they all looked and sounded amazing). She told me her Italian beef is the leanest you'll find anywhere and even though I wasn't craving beef at all, I decided to go with her recommendation. Hands down, best Italian beef I've had in Chicago! Thick Italian bread, delicious gravy, lean lean beef, and side of gardiniera peppers?? This woman knows how to make a sandwich!

My favorite lunch place downtown. Excellent combo, ask for the cottage fries crispy. When I'm eating lighter, they have the best chicken Caesar salad ever. No kidding. They put some of their unbelievable cold pasta salad in there, and it is OUTSTANDING! Quite literally is a mom-and-pop shop, and their homemade food it testament to how much they care.

We came to this old school style lunch place to have lunch. I had the grilled vegetable (eggplant, zucchini, red onion, roasted red pepper, tomato, cucumber and balsamic vinaigrette) with special pasta salad. My husband had the Chicago style Italian beef but it wasn't dipped. We definitely got our money worth at this place.

Great lunch spot! A dimly lit hole in the wall, you're not coming here for the service. You're coming for the food. The chicken parm sandwich is massive and delicious. The chicken caesar salad is what I get most often, and it comes with a swirl of pasta salad in the middle; unusual, and not unwelcome. Really tasty. This place could probably afford to come down on price a couple bucks; the salad is $9.50. It's a large salad, though, so meh. I've heard the Italian beef is awesome, but have yet to try. Will absolutely be back!

This is by far the best italian style fast food spot in the loop. They are only open from 11-2PM on weekdays, so plan accordingly if heading there. The menu is on a chalkboard but does not change often besides a few specials like lasagna and other baked pasta dishes. Menu: cold sandwiches and salads, hot italian beef, meatball, sausage, and pasta dishes. Most come with a side of cottage fries (yum) or cold pasta salad. Prices: mostly everything is in the $10 range which would seem pricey, but the quality of the food is top notch. Atmosphere: old school dark bar. I do not think the serve alcohol even though there is a bar on the first floor. There is a second dining area upstairs which is spacious and usually empty. Advice: go early to avoid a line. Get the lemon chicken sandwich with cottage fries, and a san pellegrino. Eggplant parm is also very good.

Service and sandwiches with a smile! This cute little restaurant (which actually isn't all that little once you step inside or go upstairs) is practically in the heart of the city but manages to keep a Smalltown, USA vibe. Everyone is unbelievably friendly and accommodating. After reading Mike K.'s review, I felt it of the utmost importance to try the Smoked Turkey Sandwich. It was everything he described and more. They nestle a thick layer of thinly sliced turkey along with provolone, green lettuce and ripe tomatoes between one of the tastiest focaccia breads I have ever tried. The bread was soft but substantial and loaded with seasonings and topped with tasty dried tomatoes. The balsamic vinaigrette is light enough as to not overpower the other ingredients but strong enough to hold its own. As good as the sandwich was, I have to say I was most impressed with the side of Signature Cold Pasta. It takes a special talent to mix but a few items (angel hair pasta, olive oil, basil, garlic and grated Romano cheese) and have me wishing it came in a bucket and not a few bites.

I have eaten here for lunch 4/5 every week, their lemon chicken salad is the best salad I've ever had. $10 is worth the quality that you pay for. If you go with the beef, the rumors are correct it is the best in Chicago. Instead of dipping it, throw mozzarella and pasta sauce on it. If you get any sandwich make sure to use their homemade focaccia bread. This place should have a Michelin star.

Sarah's trippin'. I too work in the area and have walked past Bombacigno's every day without stepping foot inside until earlier. HOLY CRAP. Why haven't I been here before? It's payday today so I figured, "hey man, treat yo'self" and I figured I'd finally try this place. Sarah's right about one thing, the menu is a bit hard to read, that is if you struggled in 2nd grade with reading cursive. I decided to get the meatball sandwich and HOLY CRAP. These meatballs were HUGE! They're like the size of tennis balls! Not those stupid ping pong sized meatballs in Ragu or whatever the hell they have at Subway. These were 2LEGIT2QUIT. Needless to say, it was delicious. The service was great as well. I'll be back for sure!

This place was GOOD! Don't go here for the ambiance. The inside can be quite misleading. Pretty dark and grungy. If you want to sit inside and all of the tables are taken, there is additional seating on the 2nd floor. At the recommendation from other Yelpers, I ordered the turkey on foccacia sandwich with the cold pasta. It was sooooo good! You can tell that it is "homemade" and not just assembled off of a truck. The portion was larger than I expected so be careful! For ladies, share a sandwich if you can and just order an extra side! And, to confirm, they DO accept credit cards. I WILL be going back again for lunch!!! Word to the wise, go early! We got there around 12:45 and they were out of eggplant for the eggplant parmesan sandwich and out of meatballs for the meatball sandwich. Although the line can be long, it moves pretty quick and they get your order up fairly fast.

Did I really just walk twenty blocks round-trip just for a sandwich? Yes. Yes, I did. You may ask why. I certainly did. Sometimes my willingness to travel for good food astonishes even me. Yet even when there's a bevy of sandwich places less than a stone's throw from my office (Corner Bakery, Potbelly, Subway), I almost never eat a sandwich for lunch and I certainly never crave them. They're typically unsatisfying and unappealing to me, and cold sandwiches even more so. Some intrepid Yelpers convinced me to take the plunge on this miraculous smoked turkey sandwich on focaccia bread, so cold weather and many blocks be damned, I did. This unassuming little place is a home run. Many, many items on the chalkboard menu called out to me and I will definitely be back to try them (lemon chicken breast sandwich, cottage fries, caprese sandwich, eggplant parmagiana) but on this day, I went with the turkey sandwich many others raved about. The menu warns that if you substitute ingredients or make modifications to the items that it will take longer to prepare, so if you're one of those "Sally" (from "When Harry Met Sally") types, be warned. I suggest eating everything on the menu just as God and Bombacigno's intended and shut up and enjoy it. Because you will. It was a most tasty concoction. Plenty of smoked turkey, provolone, ripe tomatoes, crisp lettuce and mildly sweet balsamic vinegar nestled in delicious, tomato-y focaccia bread. The cold pasta salad served on the side (although I wish it was room temperature and not "refrigerator" cold) is as magical as everyone states. The sandwich is nearly $10 but you could probably split it with someone and be full, especially if you add on the cottage fries everyone and their mother seemed to be ordering. Suddenly, walking twenty blocks doesn't seem like such a crazy idea after all.

So that's what this place is called. huh, good to know. My friend and I meet here for lunch about once a month and it's always "hey you wanna go to that great Italian sandwich place." I have no idea what I've ordered over the past couple of years, but I've always been happy with every sandwich they've given me, the pasta noodles are really well dressed and make a great side. I do know that I have definitely had the lemon chicken sandwich and I that I talked about the entire walk back to our offices. We almost always eat at the bar because there's generally seats available and I like looking at the tchotchkes lining the back wall and my friend is kind enough to humor me every time. If you can't find a table and or a place at the bar there is sitting upstairs (upstairs is a mystery to me, it apparently exists, but I've never been up there). The staff is nice, not super attentive, but they usually check on us at least once while we're there. They mostly seemed concerned with taking and filling orders and cleaning tables so you can tuck in when you're food is up, and that's good by me. *Heads up the menu is pretty impossible to read, good luck*

Bombacigno's is a treasure. The smoked turkey on focaccia with cold pasta salad is a near perfect lunch. Also make sure to check out the meatball sandwich; there's a reason it's on so many best-of lists. I love the atmosphere in here. I always laugh thinking about how new restaurants in Chicago spend a lot of money to curate the same aesthetic (dinged up wood floors, tchochkes everywhere). Bombacigno's has aged like a fine wine.

Great hole in the wall find, everything is homemade, and they have the best eggplant Parmesan I've ever had. The eggplant wasn't soft and soggy, had just the right amount of cheese, and had multiple layers of eggplant that stuck together nicely almost making it like a stack of eggplants. And it came with a bed of noodles (I am pretty sure they were homemade or at least they tasted that way) with a delicious red sauce. Had a chance to briefly meet the owner and he seemed like a really blue collar down to earth guy who loves his eatery and takes pride in the food. Was chatting with me how good he likes ginger ale with real ginger in it and how he uses ginger power in some of his entrees. They deserve a lot more Yelp love so check em out, worth a trip to the West Loop.

Not good if you are trying to watch calories, but worth every bite...I teach classes for people from out of town, and I always send them here for the Chicken Caesar Salad, it's the absolute best I've ever had...The old former tavern/pub it's located in has such character, almost feels like it's from the old prohibition days...The people that run the place are so pleasant and they never really rush you 5 get the order...The chalk board is hysterical to me cuz I can't read it without my glasses so I get others to read for me...I love the crooked stairs you have to walk down if if you sit up stairs....I am super happy they started to take credit cards...I love love love this place.

Went here for lunch with some co-workers, wow what a place. Small little shop with a giant board of plates to choose from, you just walk up and order. Awesome looking sandwiches. I had the grilled vegetable sandwich. It was good, but I should've just indulged in the chicken parm or some pasta, because it looked awesome. The fries were amazing as well. The atmosphere is great, you can see all of the history and its there are no cookie-cutter decorations. It's a tight squeeze at times but I think that adds to the experience. Only potential downside is that it's cash only and from the sound of it lunch-only. Great though! Atmosphere: 8/10 Service: 7.5/10 Food: 8/10

A delicious sandwich shop that turns out some of the best fare around, yet remains stubbornly cash only and can have huge lines during the noon hour. I am always surprised how few independent sandwich shops exist in Chicago but that makes a spot like Bombacigno's that much better. Their sandwiches are substantial and the cottage fries are a great Friday treat. The Italian beef (dipped) and the meatball are particular favorites. When you are ready for a break from Potbelly's and need some real food make the Inn your next lunch stop.

Inside, It's absolutely timeless...Bar on left/ Kitchen in back and also an upstairs area..It's literally like something out of 1972. On to the food.. Amazing Italian Fare all homemade everyday!! Some personal Recos:: Italian Beef with Mozz- Best In the city!! Also the Chicken Parm, Combo and Italian Subs on Tomato Foccacia are outstanding!! My partner and I ate here for the first time today. We both got the turkey focaccia sandwich. I got the pasta salad. He got a half-order of the cottage fries instead. We split the salad and fries portions and both were quite satisfactory. The sandwiches were quite delicious as was the pasta salad (which is made with vermicelli, cheese and herbs) and the cottage fries (which are fried potato slices -- cut from the length of the potato, not across, so they are very long, as wide as the potato but very thin. It was a little expensive but the quantity and quality of food were both excellent. For other first timers, you order at the counter, pay and give them your name. When your food is ready, they call your name, and you pick up your food at the counter where you ordered. Don't forget to grab napkins off the bar. They will bus your table at the end -- don't forget to toss some tip money in the jar on the counter!

I have worked in this area for over a year and I just recently checked it out. Why it took me this long, I'll never know. The menu is a bit hard to read, I'll admit. If you want good Italian comfort food, this is your place. The cottage fries, the sandwiches, salads all good. I did try the soup the other day and didnt love it - It just didnt have enough flavor for me. No biggie, everything else is pretty great.

Love the Italian Beef Pizziola sandwich with cottage fries. I'm told the Pasta Fagiole is terrific as well. A nit -- they used to have canisters of parmesan cheese on the tables, now you have to ask for a little container when you get your order. Stopped in for lunch and had the meatball sandwich. The sandwich came with two giant meatballs, which were delicious, sauce and sweet/hot peppers. For the price ($8) it was a ton of food and I found it to be really good. The shop itself is only open weekdays and Saturdays during lunch. Bombacigno's is a no-frills Italian Deli with great food.

I'm going to do you a favor, young Yelper. After I do you this favor, I want you, young Yelper, to turn around and do yourself a favor by heeding my advice. I want you to get yourself over to West Van Buren between Clinton and Jefferson. From there, I want you to walk over to the north side of Van Buren to the middle of the block, where you'll find an old, stand alone brick building. At this point, I want you to put on blinders, plug your nose and then enter the establishment known as Bomba's. Walk straight up to the counter, looking forward the entire time, greet the nice old lady and quickly order the turkey on focaccia without dawdling. Pay the nice old lady the $10.74 due, scoop up your grub, depart the premises, remove your blinders, hurry back to your desk and enjoy the best turkey sandwich you've ever eaten bar none. Bomba's turkey on focaccia is turkey, cheese, some sort of sweet vinaigrette, oregano and a few veggies if you opt for them, with a side of Bomba's pasta salad, which is vermicelli with a parmesan-oil-garlic topping. This turkey sandwich will be the best turkey sandwich you've ever had, young Yelper, and it may very well likely be the same story with the excellent pasta salad. Forget about Jersey Jimmy's. Forget about Bari. Forget about Vinnie's. Forget about Graziano. Bomba's turkey on focaccia is the business and the new Don of Italian sandwiches. Five stars.

While you dine, feast your eyes on the impressive collection of 'stuff' from a bygone era that adorns the shelves and walls. I came here for the first time yesterday and loved it! I had the meatball sandwich and it was DELISH! You get two large meatballs, plenty of sauce and I added Mozzarella for good measure. The bread soaks up the sauce, but doesnt get soggy, its definitely a fork and knife type of sandwich. I will definitely be back! Cash only!

Excellent, hiqh quality sandwiches and pastas. This place is in a mini food desert (no quick places besides subway within a block). I like the pasta that comes as a side with some of the sandwiches - very simple but delicious. The tuna sandwich is excellent and has generous chunks of tuna (it is not tuna salad). I love the inside, which has a lot of character - wood paneling, old bar. The lunch rush is busy and you will get a little wait for your food. The DO accept credit cards.

Bombacigno's J & C Inn is the Bombacigno! If you like GIANT salads with MEAT in them (just look at the picture!), as I do, this is your kinda place. Worth going out of your way for, and go hungry. I think this place will stay open later - as a bar - as more condos pop up in this area, and make a well-deserved mint, if they haven't already on their delicious lunch fare. Crazy Schlitz and Blatz promotional memorabilia that I remember from when I was a kid. No, I didn't hang out in bars *grin*, my grandmother ran a corner grocery store for 50+ years.

I used to come here regularly, about 12 years ago. Changed jobs and hadn't been back. Was it still as good as I used to think it was? The answer is YES. It tasted like an Italian beef sandwich made by someone's old Italian grandma. With fresh baked bread, I think its a first class beef.The bread had that fragrant, almost buttery smell. The beef is shaved and has a garlic, fennel aroma to the broth, which is a dark brown au jus. It's very homemade tasting. I'll be back.

This is the best deli I've been to in Chicago since I moved here a year ago. The Italian sausage sandwich is the best bargain on the menu at just under five dollars and is delicious. The turkey on sourdough is also fantastic though a bit more expensive.

If you're looking for that time warp Italian deli experience this is it. Little Italy isn't too far from their shop but even after living in Little Italy for a year no place comes close to Bombacigno's. Sure there's a bunch of nicknack's on shelves by the bar but once you see that this is a family joint you may actually believe there's sentimental value to the clutter at the bar. I had the Italian beef pizzaioli (cheese & marinara on a beef). The bread was super soft and whatever seasoning is on that beef was lights out. This very well could be one of the best Italian beefs in the Chicago area. Word to the wise *cash only *get the fries, well they're more homemade chips but just get them. you're welcome *if you get there at noon, plan on waiting a little longer. This place has a very loyal following. Who eats here? Anybody & everybody. Jeans to suits kids to adults it's all good. Will I go back? Yep, just let me hit the ATM.

This place is such a gem! We have ordered from them but you have to go there and experience the place. This place reminds me of some little joint in Wisconsin (duh, the owner is a Door County fan) Everywhere you look there is something that your Dad or Grampa had in his "bar" collection. The food was amazing. I am def. a meatball snob (only like mine and my gram's) but these were delish. The were soft without being squishy and had so much flavor (I would love one just fried on the flat top with no sauce) The lentil soup was fabulous. This will be my regular walk out for lunch. YUM!

I heard so much about this place from my co-workers that I had to give it a try. The menu is extensive and includes some nice daily specials. You can get very lunchy items like sandwiches or salads, or you can get dinners like eggplant parm and pasta. I saw a lot of people ordering the Italian sub, which looked delectable. I ordered the lasagna, one of the daily specials. It came with bread and butter. The lasagna itself was cooked in a meat sauce, had plenty of ricotta cheese and was swimming in tomato sauce. It was just like homemade. I'm really looking forward to trying their cottage fries, which are basically deep fried potato slices. The service isn't that fast, but I'm willing to wait a few extra minutes for better quality food.

I look forward to my "bad" days in the office solely because of Bombacigno's. What qualifies a bad day? Pressing snooze a few too many times or sleeping through the alarm will surely lead to not packing a lunch. Sometimes bad days are spurred on solely by my salacious desire to toss that Special K diet right out the window. Either way, those bad days are perked up knowing that some "Bomb" Bombacigno's will brighten my afternoon. I highly recommend the Italian sandwich. It is SO fresh. The tomatoes seem to have been vine ripened and only finally picked when they saw me crossing the lot on my short trek to the ordering counter. The only item that may outshine the Italian is the cold pasta. Normally I scoff at cold pasta, but oooo-weee, was I proven wrong! Angel hair pasta tossed with freshly grated basil, parsley, and parm cheese? Sounds so simple, but that combination will tickle those taste buds and blow 'em away. I look forward to my bad days in the office because a healthy helping of ma and pa love can turn even the bad days into good ones.

After a terrifying walk across the bridge over the river to find the cupcake truck, I had to find food before risking my life to walk back across. Lucky for me I stumbled into the J&C Inn! What a find, a bar and Italian deli in one, not a bad possible last dinner if I do say! I debated between the chicken parm sammie and the steak, the order taker said the chicken is more popular ya know, cause everyone is watching their weight these days. I'm not convinced that was a low-cal option, but it sure was yummy, as were the hand cut fries. Next time I have to walk across that bridge (which will hopefully be never) I will totally stop in for a shot and a sandwich.

Rickety uneven floor, chalk board announcing egg plant dishes with daily specials + cash only for lunch. FOOD - sandwiches and lentil soup is to die for. Just adequate portion, fresh tasting. SERVICE - help yourself, if you really wish to tip then there is a jar at the counter. LOCATION - West Loop, some street parking around, otherwise easy walk from the loop and Metra stations. CREATIVITY - atmosphere is several decades ago, relaxed and cozy.

This place is the real deal - reminds me of the Focacceria that I grew up near in Brooklyn. I got a side of meatballs and a piece of focaccia and made myself a little sandwich - delicious! The owners are a really nice older couple....I told Claudette that I found the place on my Yelp app and she said she doesn't totally understand how that stuff works. No worries Claudette...you do know how to make a great lunch and provide great service with a smile....keep up the good work. BTW....she mentioned that Yelpers have slowed down her lunch crowd to the point they get just as many people before and after lunch to "beat the rush". She says lunch is no longer a wait. Sheesh, I just don't know. I really went in expecting to love this place. I kind of love the family run, hey we're just trying to run a down to earth place, kinda vibe. But seriously, I can't read your menu. I went with the Italian Beef sandwich and the cottage fries because I could read those two. The bag of fries was huge and probably meant to share because they are not cheap. However, I was alone and I was not impressed. Maybe I'm just a standard fry kind of girl. Or maybe you should put some seasoning on your chips right out of the fryer? Nothing special in my book. The italian beef was okay. It was VERY lean. When they say you won't be able to find a leaner cut, they are right on. However, maybe some of that not so lean part makes it taste a little better? Mine was just a little on the bland side, which was unexpected and a little disappointing. So maybe I would try something else but I don't know if I'll be rushing back if their italian beef didn't just knock me off my feet. Ahh, I just don't know.

Well, it's been 6 years since I worked downtown and there are very few things that I miss about commuting to the Loop every day. Daoud's review popped up on the Yelp home page. Geez, how could I not write a review about one of my favorite downtown joints?? Bombacigno's is one of those things that I do miss. To me, Bombacigno's is as much a part of MY Chicago as Superdawg, Lou Malnati's pizza, Wrigley Field, corruption, etc. You get the picture. Great home made sandwiches, pasta dishes (usually eggplant is a regular offering) and cold ones. I remember going to Bomba's over 15 years ago and sitting upstairs on a hot summer day enjoying pasta and a few cold ones. All the windows were open and me and my buds were enjoying great chow and great conversation. Our only lament was that they closed at 2:00. Around 11:30 or so, the line would start to form in front of the sandwich counter and by noon you would have a tough time finding a table. It gave you plenty of time to decipher the weirdly written chalkboard filled with the day's offerings. I only hope that with the development of the west loop that their business is booming. I've got great memories of J & C. I miss you Bomba!

I am SHOCKED that this place has 4.5 stars on yelp. FIrst I had the "homemade" pasta e fogoli soup. They took it out of the microwave and gave it to me...never a good sign. The soup was bland with tiny little star noodles...reminded me of a campbell's condensed soup. Then I got the Chicken Parmasan sandwich. This also came out of the Microwave right before my eyes. This place has 2 microwaves that seemed to be in use at all times. The chicken part was thick and ok, but the sauce was bland as well as the cheese. The bread was just average. I don't get the high ratings for this place!!!

Wow, do places like this still exist in this day and age? The minute you walk into this place, you'll know you've stumbled across something, and you'll be wondering why you're the only one who knows about it among your coworkers and friends downtown. While the rest of the sheep were over at Jimmy John's waiting in line all day for their $1 sandwich, I came in here and got a chicken parm sandwich that was seven times as expensive and at least seven times as good as anything they had going on at Jimmy John's. If you want a cookie cutter chain restaurant experience, go to Jimmy John's. If you want a real sandwich that harkens back to a bygone era, this is the place. Besides the chicken parm, other sandwiches I've tried are the meatball sub and the Italian beef. Instead of waiting in line at Al's down the block, get this Italian beef instead. Nice owner here, also. He treats customers well, and he treats his staff well. He definitely knows what he's doing with this place.

Because I think I at least KNOW of all the great restaurants in the city, imagine my surprise when a friend invited me to lunch at a place I never heard of before--Bombacignos! Tucked away on Van Buren, if you were just passing by, you would think it was a Tavern. But it's a quaint, cafeteria style Italian eatery that knocked my stilettos off! Jam packed for lunch on a weekday, we made our way to the counter to order. There was so much to choose from on the ginormous chalkboard I became overwhelmed. I finally made my decision and I knew I was asking for a serious case of the "itis" by ordering the meat lasagna, but I just had to. The late afternoon sleepies I was hit with was worth every scrumptious, mouth-watering bite of that lasagna. The restaurant itself is a bit cramped but it's all a part of the charm. Friendly and fast service, Old World deliciousness--I'll be back!

This place has Character with a capital "C"! Pressed tin ceilings, an old time bar, vintage pictures and a handwritten menu on a chalkboard. You feel like you're stepping back in time and the charm of the place definitely makes the food that much more special. I had the delicious homemade lentil soup. A big bowl of soup is exactly what you need on a cold day and I was definitely full after enjoying the hearty stew. As I waited I started imagining some of the other tasty items I plan to order on my next visit...eggplant parm or perhaps a meatball sub. The staff is friendly and you really do feel like you're buying into a piece of old world charm when you visit Bombacigno's!

Wow, what a rude experience. While we were looking at the menu on the front window, a worker walked out and saw us. Then without saying a word, walked back in and locked the front door right in our faces. I have been here a number of times since I work just a block away. This place never ceases to amaze me. You can go here every day and see some new little nick-knack each time; very homey. Ok, so as for the food.... YUMMO!!! Although I have actually never tried anything besides the Italian beef, I can just tell the other food stuffs are wonderful. The Italian beef is the best I've had in Chicago, and I've eaten many IB sandwiches. They shred the beef for one thing, which I prefer, and the seasonings are perfect. Another very special thing about Bombacigno's is that there are no lumps of fat or gristle like there is with other places. That's not to say this sandwich won't put you in a food coma (because it will). Word of caution: go at the END of lunch hour (around 1pm); otherwise you will wait in line for quite a while. The food takes a while to wait, so be prepared to wait 15 minutes. But it's well worth the wait! Go here before you die.

My friend and I went on a food adventure of sorts...and we chose this place as our destination. Awesome. This place is stuck in time. Kind of old-timey, super nice people, with a classic Chicago vibe. We went halfsies on the chick parm and the italian beef/sausage combo. We both though the combo was better and thought the chick parm was a little bland. However, per other people's reviews, their cottage fries (chips) are RIDICULOUS. I even had them after they got a little soggy and they were still awesome. I ended up talking to a guy in line and he said he goes with the Italian sub every time. Obvs, that's my next choice.

Everything that is served here is served with love. All of the foods are freshly prepared daily with old family recipes and it shows in every dish. I recommend the turkey focaccia sandwich, veggie salad, and the tuna sandwich. A bonus about this spot is that they will turn every sandwich into a salad if you'd like which allows for even more flexibilty.

Bombacigno's is one of my recent rewards for having sworn off franchises of all sorts. Life is just too short. As I say, "Mediocrity is the Tenth Muse." You can avoid her here. Bombacigno's is authentic Italian; people, food and spirit. In college I worked for an Italian restaurant and catering family who treated me like their own. I'd never been in Bombacigno's until the other day. So, I took my time ordering from the counter - the only place you can order. The "Mom" welcomed me, asked me my name and asked what I like to eat. It was obvious I was giving the menu a good read. Cold and hot sandwiches, all sorts of salads, pastas and parmagianas. I've had a ham and Italian Sub,and a few other items. Everything is made fresh daily. Try their amazing acorn squash soup or delicious lean chili. The "Dad" answered my questions and shared this tidbit: in the "old" days - they've been in this location 32 years - when the hood was so rotten but populated by heavy-drinking printing and manufacturing workers, they used to lock the door at lunchtime and would buzz in only the patrons whom they knew. And they did a land office business - before gentrification. Go at 11:30 or after 1 pm. Between Noon - 1 pm the place is mobbed. Seating upstairs and downstairs, or at the bar. I haven't enjoyed a lunch haunt like this in a very long time. Prices: VERY reasonable. Cash only. (Big surprise!)

Holy heartburn. This place is my new favorite lunch spot, (if you can convince people to go to lunch either early or late to avoid the line) I had the meatball sub with hot peppers and am now battling a nap. Its a nice small family owned and operated deli that really won't leave you disappointed. The steak sandwich looks pretty killer so I have full intention on returning soon to try it as well.

I like the funky, run-down atmosphere of this place - while the rest of the southwest loop is becoming more clean & shiny, Bombacigno's seems to be a well-preserved relic from the area's skid-row days. The only thing I order regularly is the italian beef and sausage combo, and it's among the best I've ever tasted. I understand that the other sandwiches and pastas are pretty good too. I've had to swear off their cottage fries as there is probably enough grease in them to stop my heart instantly. Not a bad place for lunch if you can stand the wait - it tends to get pretty busy at lunch time and the kitchen and counter are old-fashioned and cramped, not exactly built for speed. There's usually plenty of room to dine on the second floor, but watch out for the bathroom up there - it seems to be in a perpetual state of partial to full disrepair.

This is a great CASH-ONLY lunch spot in the loop. Solid, homemade, Italian fare in a great "old school" location. The chalk board menu can be somewhat overwhelming, but you can't go wrong with the hold or cold sandys...I typically do not get pastas for lunch, but I am sure they're grrrreat! Take a break from the fast food chains and enjoy some slow Chicago food.

I met up with an friend to eat in the loop and he suggested this place, this was both our first time at Bombacingo's. He was late, but it's okay since I got to take in the surroundings. I liked the set-up with the bar along the left side. The Good: It wasn't very busy during lunch time but it might have been because it was bone chillingly cold outside. Staff was friendly and there wasn't much of a wait. The Bad: I ordered the Chicken Parm because that's what it seems like it is supposedly known for by other yelpers. *It wasn't bad*, but it really wasn't that good either. It was kinda boring actually IMHO. It was also moist enough that the chicken kept sliding out of the bun-- which is pretty much what all chicken parm sandwiches do. What makes it bad was the price for the sandwich. My friend treated me but I think it was 8.50 and it really didn't fill me up that much. The Ugly: I did not like squinting and reading the scripted chalkboard menu. Does their menu really change that much they need a chalkboard? It was somewhat overwhelming looking at that thing. They need to find a better way of highlighting the categories IMO. All in all it was an "OK" experience. I wouldn't mind coming back and checking out some of the other items they have on their menu before passing final judgement...if it is legible enough. And if I can locate it on that chalky messy menu of theirs.

Bombacigno's J and C Inn (that's a goofy name) is a family-run hole-in-the-wall that has been serving tasty Italian lunches in the West Loop since 1972. The main floor has a counter where you order food, and a few tables and bar stool seating, and an upper floor that can be awkward to reach if you are lugging a plateful of food. My friend used to come here quite often and he was waxing nostalgically about the entire menu. He ordered the Italian beef pizziola, a messy but tasty sandwich. Anything goes great with the fresh cottage fries, which are the house specialty and are a delectable cross between fries and potato chips. I ate the eggplant parmigiana, light in texture even smothered with cheese. My platter came with a side of pasta and a slice of bread. The focaccia sub looks mighty tasty too.

You know, I love places with attitude. Don't get me wrong, the people who work there are plenty polite, but there's just something about the fact that this place just doesn't give a shit about what it looks like gives it a great attitude. The old bar, still stacked with knick-knacks and beer advertisements from yester-year are now just cool. Kinda makes you want to start your own bar and just collect stuff for decoration. The food is great. Everything I've ever gotten there has been above average. The chicken parm sandwich is really good, the pasta comes out perfect, the lemon chicken pasta (and sandwich too) are both very good, the italian sandwiches are also quite tasty. I should go there more often, considering they're only a block away, but for some reason I don't. If I did, I kind of have a feeling that if I tried everything on the menu, I would be surprised if there was something I disliked. In summary, this is a great place to go if you want a quick bite with a different atmosphere than any of the typical & generic lunch spots that litter downtown.

Not the best eggplant I've ever had, but damn good. My only complaint is it could have used more sauce. I would have asked for more, but they were pretty busy once I started eating, and I didn't want to bother them. And I'm lazy. The chips were really just okay. I think maybe they were a little overcooked, but I got the feeling that's how they come. I'll skip them next time. I liked the vibe. Definitely didn't feel like a place so close to the loop - more like an old school Southside corner joint where everyone at the bar has reserved seats, and are there every day. Apparently there is upstairs seating - wish I knew that while I was sitting by the door freezing my ass off every time someone came through the door to get a delcious, homemade Italian lunch. Definitely adding Bombacigno's to the Loop lunch rotation.

I've lived in the neighborhood for almost 2 years (and have walked by the J & C Inn umpteen times!) yet today was my first time here. I ordered the meatball sandwich, which was PHENOMENAL! The meat and sauce (and the bread) were the best combo I've ever had. And, the woman who took my order at the register was super friendly and chatty even though a line was forming behind me. You can tell they really care about their customers. I wish they were open for dinner or on weekends. I no longer work in the Loop, so this won't be a regular spot for me, unfortunately.

One of the best kept secrets in the Loop area. Properly priced, excellent quality food... and each meal has a little bit of heart put into it. They get busy; and if you call ahead... your food will be ready as promised. You tell them 15 minutes; its ready in 15 minutes from your call... arrive 2 minutes early; you'll wait 2 minutes. Arrive 1 minute later; and your sandwich has been ready for a minute. Cottage fries are outstanding, and worth the 5 minute wait; as they're cooked to order.

Don't be fooled by the questionable exterior; inside you will find the best, freshest tasting Italian food made by the incomparable Claudette (the "C" of J & C). Make sure you say hello to her and husband Joe, who are there every day. Everything that I've tasted on the menu is delicious, but my favorites are: the meatball, the focaccia sub and the lasagne. I usually just order a side of meatball, but the sub is great if you're craving a sandwich. (OR, you can put the meatballs on the focaccia bread and just die right then and there -- it's that amazing). Other favorites: caprese salad and the side pasta salad -- but really, order anything. I'm sure you won't be disappointed. Seriously, the best italian in the city. Just get there before 2pm, because they close -- and be prepared to wait, because this place gets PACKED. For those on a time crunch, order ahead. Finally, bring cash because this place doesn't take credit cards. (Update: They take credit cards now!) Thank you Bombacigno's! I ordered a beef sandwich and fries here and it was an experience... A BAD experience! I had been here before and had some sort of pasta dish and another type of sandwich and they were OK, but the beef is terrible. First off, when I got back to work (take out) I had to catch the beef before it hit the floor because the thin brown paper lunch bag they gave me was soaked on the bottom from the greasy fries and the beef juice. When I opened up the sandwich from the wrapping paper I screamed, "Where's da Beef!!!" for the $10+ that I paid for one beef with sweet and hot, cheese and fries I expected at least a good amount of beef. Maybe the pasta and other sandwiches are good here (according to others) but if you're an Italian place in Chicago that serves Beef sandwiches, they better be good... and they are NOT good here.

Little Italian lunch spots don't get any more authentic than Bombacigno's. Everything I've tried here has been great, simple Italian-American dishes of goodness. The chicken parm sub is probably my favorite, but any of their sandwiches on the tomato foccia are good as well.

I just happened upon this place while looking for a lunch spot. There are so few, good, sit-down-yet-quick lunch places in the West Loop, I'm so happy to find this one. Great food, and surprisingly veggie friendly. The sandwiches come with pasta salad, which was quite yummy. I will definitely be back!

I used to try and eat here once a week back when I used to work over at 300 S. Riverside Plaza. It's excellent Italian food in an unassuming little storefront. I've enjoyed everything on the menu from the sandwiches to the pasta dishes - never been disappointed. I like the layout and the kitschiness of the place. It's been too long and I should return sooner than later. There was some talk about the family throwing in the towel, but I hope it was just lame ass rumors. An unassuming Chicago lunchtime institution. With all the cookie cutter lunch counters around, this one stands head and shoulders above the rest.

Great place, a little confusing. Friendly staff...not terribly healthy, but good. Next time I'm trying soup or a salad. The Chicken Parm Sandwich was good but not extraordinary. I spent $10 which included the sandwich and soda.

solid solid solid. Id stick with the tuna sandwich over the turkey (that focaccia bread is good but too soft for a true sandwich) and you can't go wrong with the side of pasta or their version of fries. Friendly people, unique atmosphere make this place a lunch staple.

Agree with everyone else that the Chicken Parm sandwich is one of the best ever. Since my office is around the corner I spend a lot of time here and can also recommend everything I have ever eaten. All healthy portions and great tasting.
