Smoky’s House BBQ

Reviews:
I've had bbq all over. Memphis, st louis, Houston.... this place is right up with them. My brisket sandwich was so good I ordered a couple lbs to go. The sampler platter with wings, brisket, ribs and nachos is amazing. It almost caused a domestic violence episode when my wife didn't order anything and decided to eat off of my plate... two things that would have given this place 5 stars is1: gotta have corn on the cob with bbq 2: there were baked beans on the nachos. I will definitely be back to smokeys
Went through the drive-thru for lunch, service was fast and friendly. The burnt ends sandwich I had was very good, and the hot BBQ sauce really complimented the brisket very well. The sauce was pretty spicy (perfect for me, but I love spicy food), so use caution if you're sensitive to such things. The baked beans were tasty as well, and the fries were fresh and crispy. I'll definitely go back. Plus, they take AmEx.
Great meal! Stopped by after a track meet at Eastern Illinois and we were not disappointed! Great BBQ!! If you're in the Charleston, IL area would absolutely recommend a meal here!

Los Potrillos Mexican Restaurant

1305 Lincoln Ave
Charleston, 61920
Reviews:
Truly authentic Mexican food in Charleston, IL? My how things have changed since I graduated. I sure do miss La Bamba's, but this place is a great sit down restaurant. I understand the food is the same as El Rancharito, but Los Potrillos seems to do it way better. Somehow, they look like they've been there for 30 years. And the staff barely speaks English, which is a good thing! The chips and salsas were awesome. Queso dip rocked. Cheese enchiladas were on point. Check it out!
Out of the hundreds of choices on the menu I only get one. The Acapulco Special is the BOMB! The manager at this restaurant is one of the best I've seen. He runs a tight ship and is friendly and accommodating. Great prices and good service. If you like grilled chicken, beef, and shrimp you have got to try the Acapulco Special you will not be disappointed and you may be like me and not even need a menu because that's all you will ever order in the future. I've had Acapulco Specials elsewhere around Mattoon, Arcola,Tuscola, Arthur and Paris and they can not hold a candle to here.
First visit, service was fast and friendly, food was DELISH ... I will go back for sure!!

Pagliai’s Pizza

1600 Lincoln Ave
Charleston, 61920
Reviews:
I hadn't been to Pagliai's in at least 13 years. The place hadn't changed a bit! The decor is still the same, the service is still top notch, and the pizza is still some of the best in Illinois! Pro tip: we discoverd an odd combo that works really well. Pizza with refried beans, black olives, and pepperoni. Weird, but awesome. So good, we went two nights in a row!
I've gotten pizza from Pagliai's a number of times now, and I like it just fine. The pan pizzas get a nice crunch on the bottom of the crust while still being chewy on the inside. The meat toppings are all pretty salty - too salty for me. I do enjoy the veggie pizzas they make, though, and the cheese sticks are quite good. The buckets of tortellini that you can take to go are also tasty and are a grown-up version of the classic Chef Boyardee meal. It's not worth ordering the garlic bread, trust me - the garlic/butter barely covers the inside of the bread and it's altogether a disappointing experience. In all, I'm from the Chicago area, so I'm used to having a bunch of non-chain pizza restaurants at my disposal. Pagliai's is a solid choice if you're wanting something a little more flexible than Little Caesar's. Just not my all-time favorite.
Reviewer's note: I am an extremely hard-to-please pizza fan. I grew up in a mid-sized city full of high quality pizza places, so I'm spoiled, and my standards are unrealistically high. So take this review with a grain of salt, and probably add a star. lol That being said, Pagliai's is pretty good for what it is. Crust and toppings are pretty decent, however Pagliai's can be a little too salty for my tastes. For the price, Pagliai's is a pretty good value. If you, like me, have unrealistically high pizza standards, Pagliai's won't meet them, but you'll get a good pie!

Starbucks

437 W Lincoln Ave
Charleston, 61920
Reviews:
I know that Starbucks is a chain, one which I really enjoy getting coffee at. But this particular Starbucks location is one of the best! I always enjoy going and never get bad service or drinks. I was very excited when Starbucks opened in Charleston, it is at a very reasonable distance from both Charleston and Mattoon. The drinks here are always good and I have had no trouble with the service. Also, the atmosphere is great. I highly recommend going to this Starbucks. It is not just other chain that might be mediocre; it is a great place. I will definitely continue to go here.
Here's my problem with Starbucks... I love to get coffee in the morning on my way to work and prefer the drive through. It will take several minutes to get through the drive through and depending on the day, you could get someone who is pleasant and cheerful or someone who appears bored and aloof. The other problems is the fact that you can enter the drive through from to entrances (off Lincoln Avenue by Walgreen's or by the street that faces County Market) so trying to even get in the drive through line is like a Hunger Games style face off between cranky, under-caffeinated people.
Great service. Wonderfully cheerful at 6am, but not that over-the-top cheerful that just pisses you off in the mornings. Haha.

Jerry’s Pizza

1508 4th St
Charleston, 61920
Reviews:
This is my favorite pizza in town. The sauce and crust are the best, hands down. (Disclaimer: I'm not from Chicago; I realize this affects my pizza preferences)
OK, this place has went to hell in a handbasket. Still have the sort of sourdough crust, but skimpy ingredients ( even cheese which was one of the Jerry's trademarks). Nasty tasting salty sausage (son said he thought it taste rotten and I couldn't disagree). Most veggies on salad bar were horrible. Dead fly laying in the ranch dressing (gross). Jerry's has always been a college pizza joint but not completely disgusting. Very disappointed Can't bear to go back.
Reviewer's note: I am an extremely hard-to-please pizza fan. I grew up in a mid-sized city full of high quality pizza places, so I'm spoiled, and my standards are unrealistically high. So take this review with a grain of salt, and probably add a star. lol If you like greasy pizza, Jerry's is your place. Pretty much all facets of the pizza, from crust to sauce to toppings are above average, but Jerry's proves there is such a thing as a pizza that's too greasy. A nice, greasy pizza can hit the spot sometimes, but the last few times I've eaten Jerry's pizza, it's been much too much, which brings my review down a star.
