How can you not LOVE Portillos? Their service is first class and the food is by far the best fast food in Chicago. My favorites: Hamburger/fries, The Pecan Chicken Salad, Jumbo dog (no relish/peppers) and a yummy piece of their chocolate cake! Portillos is a family favorite and the first place we take out of town guests. In fact we have actually delivered Portillos to the airport during layovers. 5 stars!

I have always enjoyed Portillo's. This specific location had issues. Three times I have arrived at 8:00 pm and they were out of tamales or baked potatoes. They tell you it will take 20 minutes and they will call you. What really happens is that you have to go back up to the counter after 30 mintues and remind them about your order. I don't know if it is an employee or managment issue. I am done with this location. I also don't like armed guards at places that I eat!

Tacky decor but pretty good food. They have a delicious roast beef sandwich that's completely soaked in sauce. It's a bit salty but otherwise perfect. The fries are crisp and spot on. The custard was also quite good. The service is fast, as you would expect from a fast food place. There seem to be tons of staff members milling around--almost too many--but the service is good and they are all friendly.

I never go to Portillos and now, I won't go again. I had a piece of their cake recently and I decided to get one for my office. Stopped in, crazy busy. I ordered a cake and a sandwich for myself for lunch. I walked down to pick up area and waited for my number to be called. When it was called, I picked up my order and left. Got home, looked in the bag.........no sandwich. No big deal, mistakes happen. I did not want to drive back to pick it up so I called to tell them to credit my charge card or figure something out. He told me that my sandwich was sitting there. Ummm, my number was called, I went up, picked it up, no sandwich. He informed me that I should have gone to another area for my sandwich. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? You are telling ME that I should have KNOWN your system and it was my fault!?? I am furious. I am in a service position, and this was the very wrong way to handle service. so, while their food may be okay, I just dropped cash on a meal I did not get because I should have known that my entire order was not in my bag. Thanks, Portillo's. For nothing.

Absolutely my favorite chicago place for a hotdog or beef n' cheddar sandwich. I must come here every time I'm in town. I actually crave this food when I'm away...

The burgers are awesome and so are the italian beefs. They are great at this place and the customer service is fast.

My husband & I ordered two hot dogs, one reg fry and one cheese fry through the drive-thru. The line was long but we expected that. What we did not expect was for the worker to charge his card $77.40 for the order! Ok. Mistakes happen. We patiently waited...waited...and waited some more for 3 people plus a manager or two to try to figure out how to remedy the error. A manager finally figured it out, gave a receipt showing the credit and told us it would 24-48 hours for everything to clear. It actually took a week. Today, my husband discovered another $77.40 charge on his card on the 13th of this month. So, someone reversed that charge. Don't they have a record of our order! There is NO way that 2 hot dogs, a reg fry and a reg cheese fry costs that much! Husband called the bank and the bank suggested that he open a dispute with Portillo's first. Will post an update later.

The old place was much better. The old restaurant served beer instead of ice cream. Who want's ice cream with their beef and ribs? We have enough ice cream, custard, gellato, places in town. Bring back the beer! And only 6 booths in the new place... are you kidding me? Who thought this was a good idea? The double drive through is also annoying. Bolingbrook is filled with morons that cannot drive...why have a two lane drive through? I've gotten stuck behind an idiot more than once that was confused when to move up. The new Bolingbrook Portillos has a salad line, no Barnellis. Why would portillos build a new location with room for a Barnellis but no Barnellis? The food at Portillos is great, but the old Portillos on the west side of Rt 53 in Bolingbrook was MUCH better.

Combo is pretty good! Hot dog bread is kinda soggy. Tried the chocolate cake shake but not a huge fan of it, it's okay.

CHILLI DOG CHILLI DOG CHILLI DOG CHILLIDOG!!!!! Whenever I'm visiting my cousin's house I past by this fine establishment and think my previous statement CHILLI DOG..... When I was a small child my mother used to take me to this hot dog stand when she used to go shopping and I would always get 2 chilli dogs.... I know I was 5 years old and my mother was giving me two chilli dogs.... explains a lot of my eating habits now. Anyway when I want to get nostalgic about those hot summer nights with two chilli dogs and my mom... portillo's does it. Eat here... expect good food at a great price. But beware, you may be spending sometime near the bathroom, chilli dog's are always dangerous =)

My old review knocked this store soley for their less-than-rockin' facility. They've since built an all new building. I give them credit for listening to my Yelp review in particular. Thanks Dick. FWIW: My consulting fee is 200k. ;) Portillo's is the best of Chicago. Wonderful.

After having passed Portillo's a couple of times while on business in the Chicago area, I finally decided to drop in and see what it was all about (after I looked it up on Yelp, of course.) On the advice of a fellow Yelper, I ordered up a Beef 'n' Cheddar Croissant with Fries and Chocolate Cake for dessert. When people say it's the best chocolate cake there is no way I am going to pass up a chance to investigate that claim. I have to say, I had really high expectations when I pulled up and saw the line in the drive thru that reminded me of the one I see at In N Out whenever I drive by at a peak hour. I parked and went inside so I could go through the menu even though I already knew what I was going to order. Pretty traditional Chicagoland food - Italian Beef & Red Hots. As I waited to pick up my order a sign on the glass separating the dining room from the kitchen states that they consider themselves fast food. It wasn't that fast... but my food came out bagged and ready to go. When I asked if there were napkins and a straw in the bag they pointed me to a condiment counter. However, if you want packaged ketchup to take with you, you have to go back to the counter to get it. It would have been nice if they had put it in the bag in the first place or even asked if I wanted some when they gave me my food. I brought the food back to my hotel and couldn't wait to dig in. Unfortunately, the Beef 'n' Cheddar Croissant doesn't travel well. The croissant was way too soggy and falling apart which made it hard to handle. I think next time I will go with the traditional Italian Beef on french bread. The hot peppers made it easier to enjoy but it was the fries that really brought me back into the meal. YUM. Crinkle cut and covered in a delicious yet subtle salty seasoning. Then there's the Chocolate Cake. Was it the best I have ever had? Nope. It was good though. If you're into chocolate cake you should try it. Overall, it was a good meal. I would certainly return to Portillo's the next time I was in town but there are some other Chicago hotspots I would probably choose to go to first.

Where to begin, where to begin... The charm of the building from the outside originally piqued my interest: old-fashioned diner front, huge brick building back...which they must need to contain the awesome of their food... You order in different lines depending on what you want...a line for salads (which I will probably never personally use) a line for the majority of menu items, and a dessert area. The inside of the restaurant is decorated in a nostalgic fashion, and there are plenty of tables for their devoted following. Now, let's get down to business and discuss the food: 1. Italian beef on croissant with cheddar: Almost obscene to enjoy this sandwich in public. The juices were soaking through the croissant and I can't think of a single downside to this...just be sure to have plenty of napkins. This is the main attraction here, and with good reason! 2. Fries: Crinkle cut and fresh-fried. The cheese sauce was pretty good, too! 3. Chocolate shake: everything you want one to be 4. Coney dog: delightful, but not necessarily the most special item 5. Chocolate cake: on a spectrum between chocolate cake and brownie, this has all the chocolatey and fudgy goodness of a brownie while still officially being a cake. I tip my hat to you, tasty cake. This is one of those places I tell people to go to when I find out they are going anywhere near Chicago--they have plenty of locations in the burbs and downtown! And you can bet I'll make a trip there every time I'm in the area!! And it's a STEAL for the price...

Watch out for the "New" Grilled Vegetable sandwich! We recently ordered these and I was sent to the "salad" side to wait for them. After much delay, I saw them remove a stack of pregrilled vegetables and stick them in the microwave, then microwave a roll and there was our dinner. The vegetables were mushy and tasteless. If they are to offer a grilled vegetable sandwich, make it fresh or don't make it at all. I did complain to Portillos guest services and they explained that they pregrill them several times during the day, refrigerate them and then microwave them. If they didn't do it that way, the sandwich would take 20-30 minutes. Huh? Just be warned! I would stick with something that was actually prepared fresh there.

Classic Chicago Hot Dogs and great Italian Beef Sandwiches. Counter service was good. Onion Rings were hot, fresh and good, if not a bit ordinary. If you go, you should not pass up the opportunity to get a chocolate cake shake, which starts out as an already great shake and then a piece of cake is thrown in the blender with it! Good Stuff.

We had our rehearsal dinner here. Their private room was plenty of room for about 40 people. The food was of course awesome! Their catering menu varies from location but overall it was great. We got there early so we waited a bit longer for the food to be done which was sort of a drag.

After having a miserable experience at another Bolingbrook eatery I stopped at Portillos. The short of it? Great food and service with a smile. Every location I have ever been to has been this way and it's why they are successful! Very good.

New location is great, the old location was dated and had parking issues in peak times. The old building was the last location that was not owned by the company. I love this place, wish they would put one on Weber Road.

I grew up with Portillo's Italian beef sandwiches, moved to CA 10 years ago, and crave them constantly. We were back in March, and it was just as I remembered - tasty, tasty, tasty. I can only speak for the beef sandwiches and the onion rings, as I've never had anything else. I order the sandwiches in an 8-pack about once a year, delivered UPS to CA, just to get my fix.

We were working late the other night and could not decide then we thought Portillos. Great choice indeed. We phoned in our order, i had one of the crew go to pick up and it took forever before she got back. She said they lost our order. What the. Well anyway it was worth the wait. I had the Big Beef / hot it was excellent. others had the bacon burger, hot dogs and chocolate cake. The cake was a big hit, everyone says it is the best. There is a lot to choose from around here but if you want something good this is good choice.

Food is usually good , but very expensive. They need to do a better job of keeping the tables and floors clean. The fries are frozen from a bag, with what they charge for them, you'd think the least they could do, is to use real fresh spuds! A family of four could easily spend over $30.00 on a hot dog meal here and there's NO free refills on the drinks that are 95% ice and 5% drink!! The owners are cleaning up profit wise thats for sure!

I love this place! Great food and fast service. The place is always packed, but they get you in and out quickly and I have never had my order messed up. Everything I have had here is great. The hot dog, Italian beef, Italian sausage, everything! You gotta check it out, don't let the long line fool you. You'll be in and out in no time and love it. Please note, it is not exactly what I would call healthy though, but you shouldn't be surprised if you look at the menu.

Can't say much about the drive thru (have a weird fear of them), but inside's usually very fast and there's always somewhere to sit, even when it's busy. I almost always get a sopping wet italian beef with hot peppers, fries and a chocolate shake. I adore their chocalate shakes. The hot dogs are amazing and smothered with toppings, Burgers are very good, and anything with beef on it is just delicious. Never had their salads, though they are available. Much more satisfying than McDonalds for sure, for hardly an increased price. For anyone on the farther east (way east bolingbrook/woodridge/etc), they're building a Portillo's/barnelli's on 83rd and Plainfield road in willowbrook along with a Michaels, Bed Bath and Beyond, Sports Authority, Staples, and a few other things un-leased so far. (work construction)

We've eaten at Portillo's and had their catering service for birthdays. The food is solid, whether you eat a regular Chicago style hot dog, a grilled chicken sandwich, italian beef, or a hamburger. Most of the locations around Chicagoland have the same feel and atmosphere, and the food pretty much tastes the same. I appreciated that they separated all of the condiments from a larger order (pickles, peppers, onions were all in their own container), but last night, all of the hot dogs were made complete with all of the condiments but they still tasted ok. However, sometimes the french fries are too salty. The last positive thing to say about Portillo's is their Monday night rib special, which is awesome.

  • Evelyn B.

I only order one of two things: the roast beef sandwich or the combo (roast beef and italian sausage). And this location, in my humble opinion, consistently serves it up right each time. Juicy. Also, I order the fries with cheese sauce. This is not a place for dieters, as their menu is very heavy and meaty. They also have awesome chocolate cake. I recommend eating at Portillo's only once in a while, otherwise you will, undoubtedly, turn into a cow.

Portillo's is the best run fast food restaurant that I've ever been to. First of all the food quality is super good. Everything is always hot and fresh. If you order a hamburger or chicken, you can bet that it was cooked to order. They are well known for beef and hot dogs, but if you venture off the well beaten path and order a chopped salad or a grilled veggie sandwich, you're going to love it. Secondly, the price. Everything here is a little bit higher than what you'll find elsewhere. Not outrageously high, but that extra 50 cents or a dollar goes to make sure that you have hot, quality food and great service. Finally, the service is amazing. Their drive-thru business is insane and yes there is a little wait after 8, but 99% of the time, you're in and out. The service is clean. The people are clean cut. I can't say enough about this place. It's clear that they pay their management a little more than other places because a lot is expected of them. Yeah, there are going to be a few bad reviews, and yes there are going to be a few bad eggs that slip through, but this is as good as it gets. I've edited this only to correct minor grammatical errors.

Ok, so let me start by saying, I know that Portillos is not the best choice for a vegetarian. I didn't choose it, but I was pleased to see a "meatless options" section on the menu. However, it only contained three items, and two of them were fish! Attention Portillos: FISH IS MEAT! Instead of the one meatless sandwich, I opted for the apple walnut salad without chicken. It was good, a nice combination of gorgonzola, candied nuts , apples, and romaine/spinach in a fruit vinaigrette. It was served with a lemon poppy seed muffin, which was very sticky although it tasted Ok. My husband always gets Italian beef, which he said is Ok, but it's not Al's #1 Italian beef (the best in Chicago). As a vegetarian, I'll never appreciate the appeal of this place. However, my carnivorous husband doesn't quite get it either so I don't feel too bad.

Unfortunately this portillos will have to suck the pipe for all other portillos. Portillos gets 3 stars because of their beef. I don't know what it's award winning for? Award winning for being dry, bland and skimpy portions compared to others of same price range. I had a combo here the other day and there were literally the equivalent of 2 deli slices of roast beef on the combo. The Italian sausage portion was good and more juicy than the beef portion. I would only give it one star for the beef but I do like their cheeseburgers. The cheeseburgers are very good. The maxwell street polish is good, maybe a little tough skin but ok. Don't ever get the catering, portions are skimpy. If you have 20 people, order for 40, then maybe only a couple people will go hungry.

Portillo's hot dogs are very big and delicious. It's one of the best hot dogs I have ever had in my life. Portillo's have great service and when they call out your number, they would entertain us by rhyming. The employees are so nice. They greet us with happy faces and very good personality. They also have an area in Portillo's that can serve ice cream. And they make the best sundae ever!

Hated their drive-thru service back in winter 2014, but given that I live so close, that hasn't deterred me from returning. It's apparent that they've added valuable personnel to increase the efficiency of their drive-thru without sacrificing food quality, especially during high levels of traffic. Poor service in winter 2014 could've been a coincidence, but since then this location has done an excellent job of streamlining the local chain's well-known drive-thru process.

I pity anyone who doesn't live in Chicago or the very few states where Portillo's has expanded. If you are visiting from anywhere that does not have Portillo's, go. Just Go! It is inexpensive, awesome food. From the Chicago style hot dog, to the tamales, fries, onion rings, salads, Italian Beef, charbroil burgers, fish sandwich, and their chocolate shake. I have pretty much had the whole menu and still have a hard time deciding what to get because it is all so great! Some of the items I frequently get: *Their chop salad - chicken, cheese, lettuce and the best dressing on any chop. Nuff said. *Chicago style dog - Onion, tomato, relish, mustard, hot peppers, pickles *Charbroil burger. *Tamales, soft, some spice. Delicious *Chocolate cake. It's plain addicting. We buy a whole one for my brother's birthday every year. For what they charge and what you get, you can have a great all American meal. Yum!

In my opinion the best cheeseburger for a fast food place. Been going to portfolios since I moved to the midwest and the quality has been consistent. Been to a few locations this one being close to my house is the most frequented. It's clean and the. Customer service is great. Don't forget to try the chocolate cake for desert. Also have healthier options available there salads are good would get the dressing on the side!

Let's just say they know what they are doing when it comes to drive through. For the amount of people that are I line, it moves SO quickly. Don't be discouraged by a long line your max wait time is 5 minutes of that.

  • Nataly S.

The only thing I get from here is cheese fries. Their fries and the chocolate cake shake are amazing. The only thing that upsets me is that when I order from the drive thru when I use my credit card the girl asked for my ID which I don't mind but I had seen the car in front of me and car behind me pay with credit and didn't ask for their ID. Not fair and will get a manager next time i see that happens I was in a hurry had to get to work or else I would of talked to a manager

Definitely better than your typical fast food, but they lack in consistency. Every time I have gotten a cheeseburger or hot dog/jumbo dog from there, the bun has been super soggy! They used to be my go-to burger/fast food joint. Plan on waiting, because like every other location this place gets BUSY!

Portillos has always been a favorite. I have noticed since Mr Portillo sold the group, service has declined. The quality of the food remains the same, however, the time it takes to get it at this restaurant is miserable. Inside, it takes probably 2-3 times as long to get an order. It appears as if there are not as many people making the orders. Dick Portilli wrote the book on how to move cars through the drive thru. The employees brave conditions harsher than the U.S. Postal service creed so we can get out Portillos on. The drive thru here is impossible. The line runs through a small and always crowded strip mall. The order takers work hard, but the cars so not move, which can only mean the orders are not coming out as fast. As a result, the parking lot gets very congested making it less than desirable to park and go in. If they did cut staffing, this location may want to raise it to pre sale levels or it won't be worth going there anymore.

We frequent the Buena Park Portillo's so when we realized that there was one close to where we were visiting, we decided to give this joint in Bolingbrook a try. I tried their Jumbo Dog and Frozen Custard Sundae. The hot dog was simple yet delicious with everything on it. It was my first time trying frozen custard. The taste was very good. Kid loved their chicken tenders.

Portllos will always be one of my all time favorite places to eat food from ever in my life. I love Italian beefs. I cannot believe the rest of America, and the world for that matter, doesn't appreciate beefs the way Chicagoland does. I like my beef double dipped extra juicy with sweet peppers and sometimes I compliment it with a chz fry and a vanilla shake. Portillos has good ribs with good sauce but nothing great about the sauce. I love a chicken club sandwich or a maxwell street polish with extra onions n sometimes relish. The hotdogs are some of the best dogs you will ever have. I like em with everything but for the past couple years I order dogs with mustard relish and celery salt or w/o the relish n they are superb. I love Portillos

You can't come to Chicago and NOT visit a Portillo's Hot Dogs. They have easily been a staple of my diet since I was a young child. While I no longer live in Illinois, I always make sure I visit a Portillo's every time I come back to the Chicagoland area. They have tons of really good food to choose from, including delicious Chicago-style hot dogs and italian beef. I'd also highly recommend their fries and their amazing chocolate cake. Despite the fact that they're pretty much always packed, I always seem to get my food pretty quickly. The staff are friendly and this location is kept relatively clean. As a final note, they cater as well as ship their food to any place in the United States.

Wow, this place brings back memories. I remember eating here in the 80's. Now they have a new building, but the hot dogs are essentially the same. I wouldn't say the experience was great, but it wasn't bad either.

I think it's about time that something should be said about this place. It's no phenomenal, it's not out of this world, it's mediocre. There can't be anything special about a hot dog. The one thing I will say they have are their loaded salads. Seriously though, I don't understand why people are so addicted to this place. It's alright.

Even before relocation, I grew up on portillos. I have tried just about everything on the menu. I always stick to a dipped Italian beef with sweet peppers, large cheese fries, and fully loaded hotdogs which they have increased the size of the wiener lol u always come back to this specific location to rekindle meme oriels I had with my family! Even on busy nights it's a quick service, clean service professional fast paced restaurant that you cannot pass up! I call myself there number 1 customer!!

Food is always great and Lexus always does a great job of getting your order together! This last time the female manager comes up and starts flinging orders out which are incomplete! Not sure what's going on ! Check your orders when management is around! Lexus should teach them a thing or two!!!

I love this establishment to the moon and back! And I can finally say thanks to Portillo's for allowing me to discover my favorite food combo: Italian beef (extra juicy) with hot peppers, small fries with 'cheese sauce', and da du duh da-CAKE MILKSHAKE!!!!!!!!!! I'd love to hear about everyone's favorite Portillo's combo.

This review is based off of service at the cash register, pick up, and dining room attendant. This visit was on a Friday at 7:45 PM. Not that I was expecting stellar service, there was a very small line to order food. I had ordered a charbroiled single patty cheeseburger with ketchup mustard only with a gourmet salad, no onions, house dressing. I didn't think I was speaking that quietly, but the cashier had a very hard time understanding my specific order for my cheeseburger & salad. She got flustered and leaned in to ask me again what I wanted, 5th time's the charm. Salad pick up is on one end of the restaurant and burgers/fries/etc is on the other end. There was no line for salad, so I stood by the salad pick up first. The prep was angry and shouting into her headset. The speediness of the salad was fast. Yes. But I had onions on my salad, no utensils, and raspberry vinaigrette dressing. I had to ask to for a swap for the salad dressing and just pick out the onions. Didn't want to bother asking her to remake my salad over onions. Lastly, the dining room attendant was very friendly and kind. He was able to find and clean a table off for me. He offered to take the massive tray away and grab a fork and knife for me. Overall, it was a different experience. I've been to the Portillo's in downtown Chicago during the lunch rush and have had better service there, than in this location.

I've been a healthy eating craze and was dreaming of their beef sandwich. So I treated myself and it was the best treat ever. I did feel guilty but it was so good. There was quite a long wait at 10 p.m. but so worth it. The manager is threw in an extra order of fries for my time.

I used to like this place but this visit was Very disappointing! I wanted a burger with goat cheese since I'm allergic to every other cows milk cheese (they have goat cheese for the salads) and the manager said no. I couldn't believe it. If they have the ingredient why can't it be used? So sad.

Fast food style with a Chicago Style Hot Dog as the hook. First-timer, and it came across that you're supposed to know what you want when you walk in, so study the menu on line. Pay attention to whether your order will be delivered to the right or to the left. Dogs on the left, btw. Steamed buns were soggy, and the famed "snap" of the casing just wasn't there tonight. Potato soup was too salty, but the chilli was good. Nothing distinctive enough about the location or food to recommend a repeat visit, but as a reasonably priced fast food joint, nothing to say "stay away" either. So perhaps a carryout order in the future to see if that "snap" is there.

Like the one on corners grove better but hate the long drive. Good grilled chicken. Wish I knew their marinade.

This place can never go wrong, they have fast food, salads, and many other options. it's a good place to go when you cant make a decision. I love their chicken sandwiches and of course their famous chocolate cake :-) This one is pretty clean, not as crowded as the others I've been to, maybe because it's smaller and doesn't have the pasta in this location.

Of course I love Portillo's but there is no reason they have to have to have their air conditioning blaring when it is 8 degrees outside!!!

I am obsessed with Portillo's downtown. So when the boyfriend and I took a trip to IKEA in Bolingbrook, we stopped here for lunch. He loved his cheeseburger and I had the Italian Beef sandwich with hot pepper and cheese. My sandwich was just blah, the beef had no flavor and the only reason I didn't complain was because the hot peppers helped with the flavor. I'd go back, but would go back to my favorite, the Chopped Salad.

Hello gift card! I am a big fan of their chopped chicken salad. Such a good size! I finally tried one of their burgers yesterday and wow it was SO good. I should have ordered a smaller one though. :) Portillo's is the place for awesome beef, salads and burgers! People that don't live near one are missing out. I sucked it up and went through the crazy drive through for the first time. They actually move the line fast so I can see why it's always nutty! Two lanes is the smartest thing ever for drive through. The people behind me ordered something that took less time then my food so they were able to love ahead and leave. Cheers to good food. :)

Best food ever. You cannot go wrong with whatever you order. Plus they never mess up your drive through order :)

My cousins said I needed to try a real Chicago hotdog so we went to Portillo's. I got... the hotdog. The only thing different was the sports peppers ingredient. I put everything else when I make my own hotdogs at home :|. The hotdog was just okay for me. I was sad 'cause the hotdog was all hyped up. I wanted to give this place a second chance so my cousin and I got the Italian beef. I was so hungry that I inhaled it. My hands were dripping with gravy. I guess that means it was delicious. I'd go here again if I was in town but I'd get the Italian beef instead of the hotdog. I like how the staff rhymes the receipt numbers like "number 52, just for you!"

Second best Italian beef I've ever had, which really isn't saying much since I've only had them from a few places. My wife had the chocolate cake shake which was divine since it was made with frozen custard. The staff, although mostly high school age kids, were very friendly and provided good service. When I come back to the Chicago area I will definitely be back.

We stop here every time we head north. The service is always excellent! The Italian beef dipped with both sweet and hot peppers is my favorite. It's a great place for families. Decorated it memorabilia from the 50-80's this place has plenty of seating, is clean, & well organized. The menu has many choices from soup, salads, burgers, hotdogs, Italian beef, and their famous chocolate cake. You can even take all of these morsels home in family size portions. They have a drive thru that would make McDonald's envious!! Definitely a place to visit over and over!!

I know Portillo's is a Chicago staple, but I just can't jump on the bandwagon. This location was the same as the couple other ones I have visited. I tried a southwestern salad that was good, It was a lot of dressing. Really, it's just nothing special, a will continue to be a staple so you mise well go say you can say you did.

A simple pepper & egg sandwich with a side of cheese fries. I am trying to be a good Catholic. Besides the diced pepper and egg being all blended together. It comes with 2 large surfboard looking sweet peppers on top. The plus side, those 2 sweet peppers were swimming in the au jus of the Italian beef. That is what I call heavenly. I didn't eat meat but it sure tasted slightly Italian Beef style and that was fine by me.

I love Portillo's, but the service at this location is lacking. Went through the drive through last night and continued to watch cars behind me drive away. Employees continued to walk past my car with large bags of food; I only ordered 4 items. I could have cooked a meal in less time then I was in line. I stopped employees twice and asked about my order and was told "some items take longer to prepare" and "it's a busy night". I got my order 26 minutes after the time printed on my receipt.

Ok, who doesn't love Portillo's?! I've never had something from here that I didn't like. I reccomend the burgers, the Italian beefs, the chicken Caesar salads, the fries, and of course the shakes and malts.

Long story short: I love Portillos, and they were really good in accommodating a group of 40+ people without skipping a beat. Long story long: I came with a group of IHOPU students for the Spring ministry trips, and after being on the road for 8+ hours, this was our planned dinner stop before jumping into the business of the week. I have been to another Portillo's in Chicagoland when I came to visit in 2007, as well as the one of the very few Portillo's outside of the Chicago area, in Orange County, CA, and I love it. I mean, it's rather simple ingredients that go on a Chicago style hot dog, but there's just something about it and the way Portillo's does it that makes it that good. When our group of over 40 people show up, our team leaders let their management know that they had a ginormous group of hungry and restless 20something year olds about to clean out their kitchen. Well, we actually had a per person budget, so we weren't able to completely clean them out ;) I opted to get 2 original Portillo dogs as well as their chocolate cake shake. Now, I hadn't ever gotten the cake shake nor heard of it, but a couple of people on the team from the area highly recommended it. The staff seemed to not miss a beat as we invaded the restaurant and they handled it really well as well as utilizing a very efficient system of sending someone down the line taking orders and writing them down on their to go bags, so all the cashier had to do was ring up the order and hand the bag down the line to the expediter. I was definitely impressed. They closed off what was basically a private dining/party room, and it just made things easier. My hot dogs were as good as the last time I remember having them. I took a couple sips of my cake shake and WOW... can you talk about mind blow? Seriously... it was just about near life changing. I let a couple of people try it and one liked it and the other thought it was a little too sweet. They basically blended a piece of chocolate cake with milk and ice cream, so yeah, maybe it was a little too sweet but I liked it. Can't wait to come back to Chicago to have this again

I love portillos, but this location pisses me off. I live nearby so I've been many times. Over the last 15 times or so they've messed up my order over half the time. If you order cheese with your fries or hot peppers on your italian beef, they'll probably forget. I'm going to start opening everything before leaving the drive through. I've never been that person, but it's just ridiculous at this location. They won't take the ticket number off your car either which is annoying.

Chocolate.Cake.Shake. Oh my. Ok, so that's why I am leaving a solid four stars. That shake was amazing. I had the Beef-N-Cheddar Croissant sandwich - it was ok. To me, the meat lacked flavor and the croissant was really soggy. That's probably normal but I wasn't wild about it.

Ughh...double check your orders to make sure everything is there. Visiting Chicago and this place has screwed up our order twice in a row now, have called before to complain and been promised gift cards that never showed up. Dick Portillo is too busy counting money from people over-paying for beefs burgers and dogs to really care about customer service anymore. Would recommend going to a mom 'n' pop place over Portillo's.

This is a guilty pleasure of ours every time we visit the Chicago area. You can almost always find a Portillo's around. My husband always gets a Chicago style hot dog, and I always get the Italian Beef w/ mozzarella. We both share onion rings. So tasty in their simplicity when the flavors are just perfect!

Love, love, love, love the... 1) Delicious food If you had to get 1 item on the menu by all means get their Italian Beef--juicy and tender thinly sliced beef on a soft yet crusty loaf of French bread. You get an option of getting no juice aka DRY; some juice aka EXTRA GRAVY; drenched in juice aka DIPPIED OR as I later learned juice on the side if you prefer to dip your sandwich as you eat. For an extra charge you can get a choice of either sweet or hot peppers. I ordered my sandwich with Extra Gravy and hot peppers: EFFING DELICIOUS. Aside form their Italian Beef, I've also thoroughly enjoyed their chicken caesar salad. I have yet to try their hot dogs which my cousins, who live in Chicago, swear by. 2) Clean and casual atmosphere The decor at this Portillos is an interesting cross between a 1950's diner and Buca di Beppo--very family friendly and can easily accommodate large parties. 3) Bargain prices There's a wide range of price points with no one item costing more than $8. Apparently there's are 2 locations in CA: Buena Park & Moreno Valley...will need to make a trek out there OR make another trek out to the Chi :)

This place has gotten me through a lot of tough times involving hunger pangs, so I gotta give them the 4 star treatment. This Portillo's being the closest to my house, it's the one I (most conveniently) frequent. Their chocolate cake supply is fabulous but their ability to get your order right is a little off, just a little... and only when you get counter service inside. The drive through is perfection, but it will take a while since they have a pretty short drive thru lane. They make pretty good salads, amazing ribs, and great dogs but their veggie croissant is really gross... which sucks for me because I became a vegetarian since last summer. They do have a few fish options for those pescatarians, though. Their fries, sadly, are mediocre... I like my fries a little soggy and long and somehow I always end up with the short-ass, crispy, bottom of the fry bin dwelling fries. Still, you are Portillo's and I will be back again, and again, and again.

Hard to believe that I'm giving a Portillo's just 2 stars, but my first & last visit to this location justifies my rating. The only reason I came here was because Johnny Rockets nearby was closed by this time (8pm on a Sunday night). There weren't many people eating, but as we're walking towards the counter to order, I see a security guard wandering around. I've seen cops directing traffic outside other locations before, but never an armed security guard (gun & all) inside. That seemed pretty out of place to me, especially on a Sunday night when it wasn't crowded. We placed our order & waited for our food. Portillos is known for their speed & efficiency, so waiting 10+ mins for 2 simple hot dogs, cheese fries & shakes felt like a lot longer given their reputation. The man in front of us got his order, then came right back to the counter to complain that his order was wrong. After waiting for them to fix his order, we finally got ours. They forgot 1 of our cups of cheese, no big deal, we shared 1 cup. I tasted my "chocolate" malt, which looked & tasted like vanilla. I went up to the counter & told the guy this is supposed to be chocolate, he didn't even look up at me but said, "It is chocolate". I didn't want to give the armed security guard a reason to kick me out by arguing with the counter guy over whether my malt was chocolate or vanilla. But if a customer complains about something, just humor them & try to make it right, don't give a snotty response without making eye contact. While we were eating, the amount of people waiting for their orders outnumbered the number of people who were eating 2 to 1. Just about everything about this visit left a weird taste in my mouth, maybe it was the time & day we went, but I've never seen anything like this at any other location I've been to.

First time in Chicago so had to stop by Portillos. The hot dogs are legit don't know if there out of this world but definitely solid. Also the cost to value is outstanding. Make sure to get the cheese fries, they are addicting.

Focusing exclusively on food taste and quality, value, and drive-through service, this is a 5 star fast food restaurant. I've never actually gone into Portillos to eat because the drive-through experience has always been enjoyable, easy, and relatively quick. The primarily younger kids who almost always take your order outside (whether it's 0 degrees or 100 degrees) are always polite, professional, and friendly. The food itself is impossible to beat for the price: * The Big Beef Italian Beef sandwich with giardiniera is the best that I've ever had, and I've consumed a lot of different italian beef sandwiches. The meat is always flavorful, never dry, and the bun always has just the right amount of the beef's juices! * Their hotdogs are equally as delicious, high in quality and rich in flavor. * The Grilled Tuna Sandwich is amazing. Tender, juicy (watch out though, it tends to have quite a bit of flavorful juices which can leak from the bag into your car, lap, etc). Request that they wrap it in a plastic bag if you're ordering from your car to remedy the issue. * If you're into french fries like I am, then you will not be disappointed with their french fries. Not the best I've had, but still very good. * Finally, if you have absolutely no respect for your body, the chocolate cake is probably the best I've ever had. You seriously cannot go wrong with any of the aforementioned menu items. The drive-through line is ALWAYS packed at dinner time for a good reason: Portillos is amazing!

Great location! Whenever I'm in the Chicago area and not downtown, I look for a Portillo's. I stopped by this location while visiting family, love the decor. They absolutely have the best Italian Beefs of any chain out there! It's fast, it's clean, and it taste great!

I still LOVE this NEW place and I am just soooooooooooooooo sorry that people are putting their reviews under the OLD place. Check it out people ~ YELP just changed the address but this is a COMPLETELY different location. There were no reviews on the old place between June 2009 and sometime in 2010. That's because you cannot go there any more. It would be nice if all those people put their reviews under the NEW location despite the confusion about this being the old location.

And I thought the new building would alleviate the mind-blowing cluster fuck the drive through this place had. But more space, means more spaces to stick cars in the drive-through line. Yes, it's a maze, but somehow they always get the orders right! And the menu now includes ribs and frozen custard. (PS- I tried the famous chocolate cake shake. I seem to be in the minority, but I thought it was awful. Like sucking cake through a straw.)

While in town I ate here every day. It was the best when I lived here and is still the best 20 yrs later. Thank you so much for not changing like most places do. My fav is the Italian beef with sweet peppers extra aju and some fries with cheese.

The food is always good, but at this particular location, their salad bar staff really do not pay attention to what is ordered. I usually get a chopped salad to go, dressing on the side. Any experienced restaurant will always put dressing on the side so you can dress the salad yourself later, so the greens will not wilt and get mushy. I even specifically ask for dressing on the side. Then, I watch as they dress the salad and bag it up, and I send it back every time to be redone properly. This is usually accompanied with attitude from the servers, which isn't necessary. That one issue is really my only problem. The other locations you visit are all consistent, and the food really is good; if you are an "out of towner" this is a solid establishment to visit to get a taste of the local faire.

Best fast food burgers period! This is the place to go if your craving a good cheeseburger. The cheese fries and onion rings are awesome to. Fast friendly service.

Everything there is great. Obviously the Italian Beefs are the best in the world. If you think Al's is better, it's because you're an idiot. The burgers are great, and the chopped salad is the best salad I've ever eaten. I will say, I think the hotdogs a bit overrated, but the rest of the food is amazing. Their fries are the best fast food fries available. If you haven't tried their chocolate cake, you need to. And if you you've never had their chocolate cake shake, your life is sad to me. It's a chocolate shake blended with a piece of their cake. It's a life changer.

  • Don L.

We love the "new" location, although, the parking lot is really, really small, you're almost better off just going through the drive through! It is a two laned drive through, but it works well. As for the food, great classic Chicago hot dog, awesome beef sandwiches. I'm also a big sucker for the chopped salad and the grilled polish sausage with onions. And surprisingly, a lot of people don't know about their chocolate cake!? If you like chocolate cake, you NEED to try their chocolate cake... talk about chocolatey goodness. YUM!!

    (4)
  • Paul Z.

I usually love Portillos, however this location really sucked, My $7 beef sandwich was dry and mostly bread, they forget to put hot peppers on it which made it even worse. Their drive thru took almost 10 minutes to give me 2 beefs and a salad. IMO Al's beef is superior to Portillos.

  • Lydia Z.

Had to stop today get rid of the bad taste Portillo's left yesterday. You see I tried the ribs yesterday and they are not good. So today we were out and I had to rebuild my taste buds with the ole standby...hot dog and fries. YUMMY!

Looking for the best Chicago food ever? Look no further. Portillo's is IT - no other restaurant even comes close. You will not be disappointed by anything you order here. This particular location is a brand-new building on the corner opposite their original location at Route 53 and Boughton--and it's huge. Even though it's meant to handle a large crowd, you still might have a hard time finding a seat! The best aspect is the menu. There is quite literally something for everyone here, whether you can handle a Big Beef with mozzarella cheese, or if you order a salad. Beef, sausage, burgers, chicken, and French fries are all done right. In fact, there was even one night not too long after the opening where Mr. Portillo himself was there! He treated the whole restaurant to a dessert of ice cream. How awesome is that!? If you've never had Portillo's, go. Get yourself a Chicago-style hot dog, or an Italian Beef. Once you've had it, you can't have enough of it!

  • Brittany B.

An ode to Portillo's: When I go through your drive-thru I always seem to fly-thru I never same to make it back With any fries remaining in my sack because i usually to eat a bunch when on my way home to deliver lunch. Your chopped chicken salad treat simply cannot be beat But why don't you bring your olives back? they really add so much to my snack. Some other favorite treats of mine Are shakes, polish and beef so fine! But one thing bringing me such malaise... is that your chocolate cake is made with mayonnaise!!!!!! That is really very yucky! But to get to eat Portillos, I feel so lucky!!!!!

This review is more for the out of towner than anything. All I'll say is what everyone knows already so for most, this isn't news. They've been in this town for YEARS. What a story when an man takes a little building (the Dog House) and built it into a empire is amazing. Each location has a theme relating to it (30's, 50's, gold rush being the main 3). People (a small few) may argue their "local corner spot" is real Italian Beef & this isn't. I was in Hawaii years back & met many transplants. Several of theme mentioned that not only do they miss Portillo's, but they had some shipped to the island. Even more amazing, their friends tried some & loved it. They stick to what they do best. I was in an airport and a guy mentioned 2 things and the beef sandwich is the other. This is a new location, bigger than it predecessor one block over. this new location also has the Barnelli's menu as well (though at present it's not officially "Barnelli's, the Italian siblings of Portillo's). Pasta and BBQ menu if you wish to step out and try something different. One way to tell how good a place is by being able to compare it to other locations and you can't tell the difference. So here are the bullet points: 1. Some lingo that may help you: DRY: Very little gravy EXTRA GRAVY: We splash a bit of gravy on the sandwich DIPPED: We dip the sandwich in the gravy Combo: Italian Beef & Sausage 2. ROCK SOLID Italian Beef sandwich. If you never had one, I would say you should try it wet (a little of the beef juice on the roll). In all my years of eating at any of the Portillo's locations, I have YET to have a bad meal. In fact, that true of every sandwich they make. The beef and cheddar croissant is a nice twist to this (I would say have the sweet peppers with this). I bet you might pick up the lingo after a few visits. My preference is the beef w/ hot peppers, dipped (the roll in the gravy- messy but good). If you never had an Italian beef sandwich, it's almost like it's Philly cousin only slow roasted. Really knock yourself out and get a "combo" sandwich. The big beef is just that- BIG (for the very hungry). Hot Italian giardiniera, as I said, is what I prefer but if you don't like heat, take the sweet bell peppers. If you want cheese, mozzarella or cheddar are the options. 3. If you get a dog, spend the extra money and get a "jumbo" dog. Good Old Vienna hot dog. Sure, I'll load it up (or drag it through the garden as some would say). Here's the Chicago Dog toppings- mustard, relish, freshly chopped onions, sliced red ripe tomatoes, kosher pickle and sport peppers piled onto a perfectly steamed poppy seed bun. If that may seem like much, but you don't need to order all of that. Many days, I'll get the "jumbo" w/ mustard, onion, tomato and pickle with American cheese. Notice what's missing here? I never add that ingredient on a hot dog. 4. Burgers & Chicken sandwiches are also excellent if you're in no mood for beef or dogs. Both are char-broiled. Fries & onion rings also very good (cheese fries are a once and a while guilty pleasure. I can't comment on the salads because that's the last thing I'm thinking about when I go here (I hear they're good). The breaded chicken is good, but the grilled chicken is better. 5. If you go (as an out of towner) and in particular at lunch time, get to the location before 11:30 AM. From that time until about 1:30 or 2:PM, it's a madhouse. One madhouse that runs like clockwork and the wait (as busy as it can get) will still be worth the wait (& not as long as you may think). Drive Thur is amazing as a whole. Dinner time isn't as crazy but on the weekends, expect a slight wait regardless of time.

I came here from California and when I asked wheres a good spot to eat, people I knew recommended this place. I came in with the expectation of really good hotdogs and shakes. The hots dogs were really good BUT they were small. I ordered 2 jumbo sized dogs but I couldnt tell the difference with the regular dogs and the jumbo dogs. That's not to say the place was not good. The hot dogs were so amazing. They were really good. Had to knock the star off for the size. I also got a chocolate shake cake. and that was probably the best part there. It was really rich so be careful when getting the large size because I couldn't finish it! Other than that, the place was clean and staff were nice. Definitely coming back.

Absolutely pure Chicago, known for serving Chicago red hots and Italian beefs this place bleeds Chicago. Recently rennovated this 50 style looking restaurant offers a great atmosphere delicious Chicago hot dogs, Italian beefs, Italian sausages, and wonderful milkshakes. The Italian beef is the hall mark of the restaurant and probably the first thing you should try. Prices are good, and this is a self service restaurant order at the counter wait till your number is called. One of favs here is the Italian beef/ Italian Sausage combo with hot peppers, also can have sweet peppers.

I miss Portillos since I moved to the south. This place is always full of good food and good people. The staff is fast. The food is good and nothing beats a beef and cheddar croissant with a root beer float for Friday lunch. I recommended them to anyone in the area and if you want a Chicago style hot dog here's your place to get it.

Portillo's is a legendary hot dog spot. The hot dogs are excellent if you eat beef. However, i stopped eating beef and the dogs are no longer an option. They do have good chicken sandwiches and a salad bar. Perhaps it's wishing thinking on my part, but they should consider offering a Chicken or Turkey burger for those of us who don't consume beef......

A franchise of Chicago's all-star foods besides the deep dish. The best Italian beef in my opinion, over the top food that is oh so tasty, only in Chicagoland. This review is for all of the locations, not just this one.
