This place is the best Czech place around. My girlfriend had the breaded pork tenderloin with dumplings and I had the pierogis with bacon and onions on top and they were both EXCELLENT! Good sized portions including dessert, soup, and amazing homemade bread. The staff was very friendly. The busboy even ran my girlfriends purse outside in the snow because she left it behind. We are definitely coming here again. A great change from the usual places.

I had dinner last night with my Sister and the food is just like mom never made! Seriously, the pork tenderloin was perfect last night! Excellent beer as well. I always have a wonderful meal and it is maybe $20 a person for too much excellent food!

Awesome place, came here with my GF and we both enjoyed the food. Portions are gigantic, you get a free desert and the food itself is excellent. I'm not a good judge of Czech food but it seemed very authentic and we certainly liked it.

Great food, great prices, home like atmosphere. Will definitely go back. Love the kraut, and the extreme portion size. Went on a Sunday night, and they were not too busy. We had the breaded pork tenderloin, and Wiener schnitzel. Sooooo good. Even had the turnover and apricot pop over, which were included in the price of meal. Can't wait to try a few other meal options.

Feels likes you're at grandma's or great grandma's house. The decor was nostalgic and the food certainly fulfilled my craving for comfort food. Pierogis, dumplings, meat plates, kolacky... All really good! This is a place locals go to on a regular basis. If you want authentic Czech food then this is the place to eat at. Each entree comes with soup, a side (sauerkraut, mashed potatoes, etc), and dessert so leave room! We all took home leftovers and they were just as yummy reheated. They have a few Polish and Czech beers; love them.

Come early they close at 8. Everything is home made daily. Have no idea what I had really as the ordering occurred in Czech but it had all the sights and smells of the classics such as: liver dumpling soup, paprika chicken, spatzel, dumplings beef and gravy, cabbage.. you know the routine. Sweet old school mom and pop place, lovely people, traditional bohemian décor, good Czech beer and very reasonably priced.

When I was younger, I used to make my restaurant selection by noting whether or not five words emblazoned their front door: "Most major credit cards accepted." These days my criteria tends more to noting their longevity in business, and I am especially happy to sample most restaurants that have been around fifty years or more. If their cuisine is focused on some old world cultural favorites, all the better. Like Kramarczuk's in Minneapolis, Huber's in Portland, and more recently the White Eagle in Niles, IL, today's outing to the Czech Plaza, in Berwyn, IL met all of the criteria. "Serving the best Bohemian" food for nearly fifty years, I doubt the family owned restaurant has changed their menu or decor must over that period. Simple, traditional dishes, value priced, is what rules the day, and I couldn't find anything on the menu that wasn't a price replica of any plate I've previously had in the Czech Republic region of Europe. The restaurant offers a multi-course meal at a very low price, making it an outstanding value. I went with the "Farmer's Market Plate", which is a four meat sampler: sausage, meatloaf, smoked butt, and roasted pork. It's not like I had a chance to polish them all off while at the table, as the lead-up dishes were ample and filling. After you are seated, your are presented with a basket of mild rye and gobs of butter. Your choice of beverages can come from a full bar, including legendary Czech beers like Budvar, the original "Budweiser". If you've ordered a meal, after the bread basket comes soup (I had the goulash, a rich beef and potato-based spicy puree), followed by your entree, which is accompanied by at least two sides, like sauerkraut, sweet and sour cabbage, boiled or mashed potatoes, or light as a feather dumplings, and a huge bowl of brown gravy. Not had enough? An included choice of desserts includes regional specialties, like kolaches or streudel, both of which were excellent. The meats on my plate were lightly seasoned, heavily smoked. The meatloaf was dense and flavorful, as was the sausage, happily clad in its natural casing. The smoked butt was melt in your mouth tender. I loved the dumplings, a recipe not often authentically recreated in the US, in my experience. Service was great, with a wait staff imported from Europe. I love "discovering" places like this. You should, too. As the "Americanization" of international cuisine continues to evolve where entire generations think Olive Garden is Italian, and P.F. Chang's is Chinese, well, places like Czech Plaza remind us of our grandma's Sunday feasts. The restaurant has a party room that seats 100, with banquet prices that rock.

I have visited the restaurant with my wife and a friend of ours last Saturday. GOOD: duck, apple strudel, Czechvar beer MEDIOCRE: pork schnitzel, goulash soup BAD: svickova (both: choice of beef beef & sauce, svickova is a standardby which to measure a Czech restaurant), roasted beef I may come for a duck again - but the rest is really not worth the money. I am a Czech and spent a couple of weeks in Prague last month - so I can make a fresh comparison ....

50 yrs and counting. I've been coming here since I was a small kid. Good for young and old, not just old! The food is solid yummy and the beer selection quite nice. It's a slice of the wonderful neighborhood Cicero Berwyn once was. The chicken soup is really good with twisty noddles, chucks of carrot and chicken. Warming on a cold winter day. The Liver dumpling soup is insanely popular but honestly, who eats the poison filtering organ of the body? I guess older people who lived during the depression, I won't touch it, but everyone I know over 60 loves it here. The meatloaf is good, with a rich brown sauce and the beef with dill sauce is a touch of czechgoodness in your belly. The sourkraut is excellent- with the required caraway seeds and touch of onion. So good, I get a double helping when I come and skip the dumplings. You can get 2 kinds of dumpling though- bread or the thicker potato. Everything is so large, you can get 2-3 meals out of it and most meals come with soup and dessert- you cannot go wrong for the price. Don't park next door in the lot for the jeweler - they will tow!

They have some of the best Bohemian food around. My favorite foods here are the breaded pork tenderloin and smoked butt. Don't forget to save room for a fruit dumpling. Blueberry is my favorite. They also give you a lot of food so you won't leave hungry. You will not be disappointed eating here!

Now this is what I remember what a Chicago ethnic restaurant is supposed to be like. Wonderful unpretentious servers actually carring about the delicious oversized portions of homemade food. Where in the world could four adults eat delicious duck, pork, beef in dill sauce, and a massive slab of tender ribs, 2 Giant Czech beers coke coffee soup and dessert fotlr under $60. those of you looking for real great food at a great price need to park their buts at Czech Plaza and enjoy the real thinh

I usually like to try a place out before I take family or friends to a place. There are some places that I like but I know that most of my friends don't embrace, like White Castle for example. But on this one night my wife and I went out with another couple after having been let down by Bohemian Crystal for the last time a few weeks prior. We all like this kind of food on occasion and it was recommended by a neighbor as good. We were pleasantly surprised that it was not only as good as Bohemian Crystal USED TO BE, but way better in all respects. I always look at other peoples plates to see what they are having and if it looks good, I have no reservations about asking them what it is or how good it may be. On this location one man had a plate full of something that looked scrumptious. He said it was a 1/2 duck and tenderloin and that it was not on the menu but just ask for it. I did. The service was fast and friendly. My wife had the breaded pork chops and there were two about the size of the plate with barley enough room for 3 of "The best ever bread dumplings" . We both had a bowl of gravy. I had sauerkraut, wife had a small cucumber salad. As good as my breaded tenderloin was, it was over shadowed by the best prepared duck I ever had, and I have eaten duck around the world. If you have never had duck but wanted to try it, this is the place to try it. Our friends had the pork chops and pork tenderloin and it was "thumbs up" all around. This cannot be considered a health food restaurant, but if you want hardy comfort food and a lots of it, go try it! Total price with drinks, (no alcohol) complimentary dessert, and tip was a mere $82 for all 4 of us with all 4 of us taking home the next days lunch. Would I go back? You will have a hard time keeping me away!

Wonderful comfort food. Pork Tenderloin is delicious. Having lived on Chicago's northwest side for part of my life I came to enjoy the cooking of eastern Europe. When I need to have my Slavic food fix, it's the place in the area to satisfy that need. Go with a big appetite, leave satisfied!

Seriously good food, limited seating and very friendly staff, the parking can be difficult but the beer on draft makes up for it. Leave room for a little dessert

Every time I am in the Chicago area I try to stop by. The food is authentic Czech and the best I tasted outside my mother's kitchen or the country itself for that matter. Just recently I stopped by and had the 'Koprova'. The dumplings were fantastic and so fluffy. The meat was tender melting in my mouth. The sauce - oh soo good! One thing has to be said about the portion size - it is huge! And the price? Wow! I also ordered a cup of the Liver Dumpling soup, and I ordered apple sauce and extra 'kolace' - and brought some all the way home, too. My bill came out to just over $10.00 ... I could not believe it. The atmosphere is simple. Not fancy, not even modern really. But the staff was friendly, and the fact that I could speak Czech with them was an extra bonus - I almost never get to use my native language outside my immediate family. Oh, and fantastic authentic folk music - you got to be Czech to truly appreciate this!! Dobrou chut!!

Thanksgiving day and a great disappointment. We went with a group of 12 for a Thanksgiving outing for stray people who had no family dinners to attend. It was 3:00 PM - not a busy hour of the day. The place was half empty. We did not expect to see turkey on the menu, but there it was. They offered turkey, dressing and sweet potatoes. People who ordered it got the turkey and dressing and a bit of cranberry sauce, but no sweet potatoes. My wife and I both ordered our favorite Czech dish, Svickova. I actually introduced her to it on our first date in 1979! We have enjoyed it many times since in many different restaurants. She even spent a couple of days making it once. (That was once!) What a disappointment. The meat was dried out and tough (at the Czech Plaza - not the dish my wife made). Yes it was soaking in a bowl of the sour cream gravy that is standard. And the gravy was ok. But the gravy could not rescue the dried out tough meat. And the portion was not great. It was three thin slices of meat. The meal came with a cup of soup (average chicken noodle soup) choice of dessert and lots of very good rye bread. My wife ordered a glass of the house red wine. Big disappointment. Almost undrinkable. I got lucky and ordered the dark Czech beer on tap. It was very good. We will not go back. There is an outstanding Czech restaurant a short way north of this one on Harlem Avenue.

i grew up in berwyn in the 50s. my family owned two bohemian style deli grocery stores. i have been to prague. i know this cuisine... czech plaza is the best. totally consistent and excellent. absurdly huge portions. a little known secret...ask for natural gravy. it's not thickened with flour. it is more like an au jus. the waitress once told us the flour gravy is for "the americans." order from the daily specials. the moravian pork is a real dream. they are happy to make up custom combinations. the duck is divine. fabulous beer selection and a really friendly owner. remember it's not a czech thing to be obsequious. don't feel bad if your waitress doesn't kiss your ass...

We have eaten here a dozen times or more...they don't get any better than this!...our friends are partial to the Riverside restaurant which I haven't tried yet but the Beef with dill sauce and dumplings with a side of cabbage is absolutely Killer! We drive all the way from Huntley to eat here. If you're looking for uppity, surroundings...this place ain't for you...it's old and dated. You might get a cranky waitress ( we haven't but it's possible)....anyone who doesn't like this place needs to get thir Bohemian food at Burger King.

The Czech Plaza has been operating for almost a half century and serves a very large assortment of Bohemian food that includes daily specials. It is open for lunch and dinner every day except Tuesday. The restaurant consists of a large plainly decorated dining room with a service bar, which carries a good assortment of imported beer, and an adjacent large room for large parties and banquets. I have eaten there for many years and have always been extremely pleased by the authenticity and high quality of the food, the friendly service, and the exceptionally moderate cost. All meals start with good rye bread and butter, and all entrées include soup and dessert. Most entrées can be ordered in large or small portions, and the average cost is around $10 to $11. The portions are so big that even though I usually order a small entrée, I always leave feeling that I have overeaten. A few of my favorite entrées are the breaded pork tenderloin, the sliced beef in dill gravy, the stuffed peppers, and the goulash. For my sides I usually select the dumplings with gravy and the sauerkraut or sweet cabbage. For dessert I go for the apricot kolache or the apple strudel. Some of the critiques that I have read mention poor service by the waitresses. In my experience every waitress that I ever encountered was extremely helpful and attentive. In fact, many times I have lingered with friends and family after eating and never felt any impatience or pressure by a server to close our table. All the waitresses are foreign born and because English is not their first language, service issues reported by dissatisfied patrons are most likely a consequence of a communication problem rather than one of attitude or competency by the servers. The Czech Plaza is most highly recommended for the high quality and authenticity of its Bohemian food and great value.

I died and went to Bohemian Heaven swathed in pork gravy! Dumplings with breaded pork tenderloin and half a duck...yummo...huge servings and perfectly done..the sauerkraut was perfect mix of sweet and sour. Starter of live dumpling soup which is an acquired taste and I love it. A nice clear beef brother with a huge liver dumpling. If you are watching your diet stay away but if you want a feel good throwback dinner this is the place. The apricot kolachky was more like a mini coffeecake and it was fresh and tasty.

Used to come here a lot with my buddies, but switched over to Riverside Family Restaurant when we showed up on a Tuesday and saw they were closed. The food is authentic and quality and the atmosphere is very welcoming, but what I notice everytime I eat there is that the wait staff doesn't make an effort to give you refills on soft drinks/coffee and bread. I am Bohemian myself, so I can relate, but I also like having something to drink when I am thirsty.

Ok, I'm just used to meat filled dumplings, not soft bread labeled as dumplings...but their potato cakes was mmm, delicious. Not a fan of the breaded pork or the canned veggies, but this is what draws folks into their doors. Keep on doin what works

I really liked this place. It's not much to look at from the outside or the inside, it's been around for 45 years according to their menu. Don't park in the lot with he electric gate, that's for the jewelers next door. But it's clean and comfortable and they have a huge menu with very good prices. I think the average entree is about $11. As others have mentioned that includes a 3 course meal with soup, entree and desert. I made the mistake of ordering the goulash soup instead of liver dumpling, won't do that next time but it was decent. I think breaded pork is their claim to fame and it's excellent. They put out home made rye bread that is very soft and delicious. The bread dumplings are awesome, and there is brown gravy served on the side which was great too. I was surprised that the sauerkraut was actually sweet instead of sour, and it was served hot. Not a bad thing at all, it was very tasty. Service was attentive and friendly. Our waitress did a great job with a big group, about 20 people. We were never waiting for her, she was mostly waiting for us. The family only gets together in that area about once per year so I look forward to next year. But if I'm down there for any other reason I'll stop in for sure.

Are you kidding? that smoked butt was bootaliscious. I dont remember what else I ordered. That means it was super good. (food coma) The atmosphere was not as fun as Klas Dumpling House but the food way better.

Nejlepsi knedliky! Best dumplings! We are czech, this restaurant is authentic. Portions were a great deal (3 course meal with coffee for about $10) Recommend svickova with dumplings, and pilsner urquell on tap.

Czech Please!!!! (sorry, couldn't resist). Well, this place, in my book, is more like a 3 1/2 star joint. Maybe next visit will bump it up (yes, there will be a next visit). Another old world restaurant populated with us elderly folks .... ah, bliss!!! The decor is faded but clean and appropriate. The service was very good and attentive. I had the liver dumpling soup. It was good, not great, but solidly good. Christopher opted for the farmer's vegetable soup, which was out of this world. He liked it so much he got an order to take home for dinner. They provide some seriously good home made rye, which we devoured with gusto. I had the combo of duck and pork with the dumplings. The duck was amazing and really meaty. The pork on the other hand was just ok. It was kind of tough and lacking in flavor. The dumpling was the loaf style and pretty typical and rather nondescript. Christopher ordered the beef in horseradish sauce with mashed taters. The sauce was really good and the beef was fairly tender. The mashed taters were ok in flavor, but seemed to be made from flakes. Real homemade taters would have made this meal a knock out. The meals came with dessert. We both chose a peach pound cake with whip cream on top. For a dessert that comes with the meal, it was quite good. All in all, a good experience. We had some real stand out items, but a few things were rather lackluster. This is a good place to come if you are really hungry and want some stick to your ribs food, especially on a cold winter day.

Great food and service, would have given it 5 stars but they do not have potato pancakes every day or sauerkraut filled perogies which is a must.

When it comes to authentic "Bohemian" food, Czech Plaza is as good as it gets. Growing up I remember my Grandmother making some of these dishes but she never got too extravagant with her cooking. We used to go to a bohemian place on the circle in Brookfield called the Corner Restaurant, but when the parents passed it down to the kids they just didn't have it in them to continue the traditional quality and service as the older generation did, so they eventually closed. Now Czech Plaza has been around for quite some time but I only discovered it a couple of years ago. Recently I had the chance to go revisit some of my old hometown haunts and I had to make a trip over to Czech Plaza to get some hometown cooking. As a tip to the inexperienced diner, come here hungry, very hungry, and do not, I repeat do not go over board with the delicious soft & freshly made rye bread basket when it comes out, have a slice with butter but keep half to go with your soup. I read some other guy's funny review and I chuckled when he said he had to carve the liver dumpling in his soup! It's funny because it's true! The Liver dumpling soup, for me, is the only soup I order here, and yes you can eat it with a spoon, fork, and knife. But it truly is a delicious creation in a perfectly light and savory stock broth. This time we did order an appetizer, which is really bold given the size of their entree's. We shared a plate of potato pancakes and oh were they perfect. Browned just right, crispy edges with creamy but still well formed grated potatoes in the middle that sung with flavor. As far as the entrees go I'm kind of a traditionalist when it comes to ordering old recipe items like the Svickova, the Beef with Dill Gravy or Chicken Paprikash. I always go with the dumplings but I sometimes trade off between Sauerkraut or Cabbage. They're nearly identical side dishes except Sauerkraut I believe is a tad less sweeter and has caraway seeds in it. When whatever entree you order arrives you'll see why it was best to lay low on the rye bread because it will be huge. But I do recommend that you snag that rye bread up and put it in your doggy bag box to take home with you. Moving on, the beer selection is really choice and I would be hard pressed to get through all of the choices in less than three visits here. My favorite however is the Golden Pheasant, a Slovakian beer, in a big bottle - yeah baby! Service is not very consistent, but I have found this to be true at many many authentic European restaurants every time and every town. Eventually you get everything you need it's just not always when you want it. Now here is a very important thing to remember before you even stick your fork into your delicious beef 'n dill gravy!!! There will be dessert after your meal. There are no exceptions to this rule! And you will be given choices of the most amazing pastries and they also will be huge. I myself had the Poppy Seed Cake. Damn good! I ate the whole thing, and my tummy made that "ding" sound just like the one your old oven timer to tell you when it's done. Boy was I done, but you'd be best to not stick a fork in me because It would be like the scene in Monty Python's Meaning of Life after he eats "Just one tiny little wafer thin mint!" Only since it is a consistent subject in my reviews will I bring up the matter of pricing of the menu. The price for all their meals are completely fair and I don't ever have to question or even look at the prices on the menu here. It would be perfectly fine with me if they had no prices printed on the menu because I would order everything I wanted anyway and would know whatever amount I had to pay would be fair. Cheers!

Great place for a group lunch. Delicious food and excellent service. My boyfriend's grandpa is polish and he LOVES to come here because food reminds him of home. HUGE servings. One meal can definitely feed you 2-3 times.

  • Samantha G.

Pleasantly surprised. Extremely. If you know me at all, you know I despise food that may resemble anything polish, Ukrainian, or anything near that region in Europe. I just felt that Czech food would be just as bland and nauseating. I. Was. Wrong. This place is the soul food for these people. While most everything is fried, their food was amazing. The portions are very generous, and they even come with desert! Their pork chops were very tasty, as was their breaded cauliflower, and soup. Cons: make sure you have no plans for anything after eating here, bc you will be in a food coma when you're done!

I have been coming to this place for at least 35 years. There are many happy memories of my Mom enjoying her Pork Tenderloin. I wish she could still be with us every time we are there. I have read some of these reviews. Most are good and some are ridiculous with their complaints. The place is old but, I think the food makes up for everything . I am half Bohemian and can tell you the food is made just like my Dad would love! Yes, it is crowded on a Saturday and Sunday dinner time but, I have never waited too long. The liver dumpling soup is so delicious. The waitresses have a lot of people to serve and I think most are very friendly. I couldn't carry a tray with 3 full dinners on it with one hand! I have been to a lot of restaurants and this is the only one that you can get a 3 course meal that is delicious for so little money. So, if you are looking to eat a good Bohemian meal and pay way less then you could make yourself, here is THE place to go!

The only Bohemian restaurant in this area open on Mondays and since my dentist is back in the old neighborhood, I decided to drop in. Again, can't really complain: good portion of food, attentive service, clean setting, but being Czech entitles me to be picky about Bohemian food and there are places I like better!

Drove from Warrenville to go to this restaurant today, (Sunday, Oct 6, 2013) it was reviewed on "Check Please" last Saturday. One guest really loved this place. My husband wanted to go. He was hoping it was like the "Dumpling House" that closed several years ago in Villa Park. This restaurant is in an old neighborhood and has very traditional czech menu. Not fancy, and is very casual. They had a large screen TV on so we could see the Bears Game while we ate. My husband and I arrived at 2:00 pm. We were seated immediately, even though they were very busy. We both looked at each other and smiled. Just maybe the drive was worth it! Server was prompt. We placed our order. First course: Soup. Husband: liver dumpling, Me: chicken noodle. Both soups arrived quickly, BOTH were luke warm. Soups were just so so. Rye bread and butter was delivered with the soup. I ordered breaded pork tenderloin with boiled potatoes and cabbage as a side. It arrived very fast too! Cabbage was delicious, but just warm, pork tenderloin was generous (2 large cuts) and deep fried. The pork was tender but barely warm. Breading was crunchy, but flavorless. Large portions for both meals. Thank god for the rye bread and butter, they were great! Husband had a combo of roast duck and breaded pork tenderloin with mashed potatoes and a side of sauerkraut. His meal was also just barely warm. He said, his duck was just OK, and his pork tenderloin was crunchy dry. They delivered a cup of dark thick gravy. I needed this gravy just to swallow the pork tenderloin because it was so dry. He hated the thick brown gravy. We both ate very little of the meal. So disappointing! The server asked if we wanted boxes to take home. We said no thank you. I sure hoped desert would be worth the trip.....wrong! Apple strudel and a cheese Kolache (kolaczi). I had a cup of coffee. Apple strudel was soggy, and the cheese kolachi my husband had was not fresh. So over all we WILL NOT be revisiting Czech Plaza Restaurant. Our bill was $27+ $5 tip. We lost and so did the Bears! There is always another game!

I have grown up at this restaurant. Superb quality, warm, welcoming staff, and above all, INSANE portions of the happiest food hugs. I have never ordered anything that didn't agree with me. As a child I ordered the pork tenderloin for YEARS. Never pass up the poppy seed roll or the dumplings and gravy. You really must go.

WOW, went there last night and had the best pork tenderloin ever, could have been the excellent gravy. I was really hungry and still had plenty of food to take home . The place looked unchanged from the first time I was there over 20 years ago.

Kids hate this place, that's ok because I hate kids. This place is as good as it gets. Bucket loads of delicious Eastern European food, barrels of beer, and crates of dessert for a good price. I love any dish of theirs that includes gravies. Svíková, paprika, or beef and horseradish gravy ~ all delicious. Some people think the waitresses are short with people.Being short with people is just a Czech characteristic. They aren't fake, trying to butter you up for a tip. Besides, these waitresses wait on 100 year-olds all day, you'd be short too! ENJOY~!

Fantastic home-style dinners....you really get your money's worth at Czech Plaza. The roast beef with rice is not to be missed...the sauce can't be found anywhere else. The bohemian dark rye is great too, you'll probabaly be getting your fill of it before the food comes.

We've been going to Czech Plaza for years! Giant pork tenderloins, fresh baked rye bread, great potato dumplings (ask for them), spaetzle, Szgedin goulash...if you like european comfort food, here ya go. The sides, sauerkraut, cabbage and cucumbers, all are on the sweet side. Plainly put, the dessert here is free and that's about all that recommends it. You're safest with the kolachki. One reviewer said the interior is 'stunning'??? Come on, it's 70's eclectic ethnic, paneling and icky knick knacks! We go for the consistently good food and hope we get seated in the section with the young waitress with the dark ponytail. Some of the older waitresses are a bit crusty. Oh, and nice european beers. Also a banquet room.

Delicious Bohemian food. You know when you walk in and see a bunch of elderly folks with several generations of their family dining with them, it's good. I've only had take-out and we really enjoyed their breaded pork tenderloin and dumplings with rye bread. I tried the liver dumpling soup and it was good, too. They offer huge servings, which is nice for leftovers the next day. It's a favorite with my boyfriend's family - they're Bohemian and we get food from Czech Plaza once a year for a birthday or special event. Always pleases!

Had lunch here today in honor of my friend's grandson's kindergarten graduation. Love this place. Got there at about 11:30 a.m. and had no problem putting together a couple of tables for our party of seven. They did it before I could even say "liver dumpling soup" or "cucumber salad". Waitress was great and she cracked me up when she asked the little graduate if he would like a kiddie cocktail. What kid doesn't want one ot them??? Anyways, when she brought it to him she said, "Here is kiddie cocktail for young boy." Well, it was hilarious the way she said it because of her Czech accent. I guess you had to have been there. She was cute as hell. We had a couple of the old grandpas with us and they just go monkey crack crazy for this kind of food because they are Polish and Czech. The rest of us who were there are all Polish so this is pretty much like Polish food so we all were ready to get our eat on. And on we got it. We all had some variation of the perfectly cooked pork options. I always run to the half and half -- half roasted pork that melts in your mouth and the breaded pork tenderloin that is a fried piece of meat nirvana. Bread dumplings and cucumber salad and I was good. Of course our cute Czech waitress kept bringing more of the 10W40 brown gravy to pour on the whole plate. My dessert cheese kolatcky was fab. And, I have lunch for tomorrow. I can't wait to wake up tomorrow. This is the soul food of my motherland and I love it! And the vibe is like being in your gramma's kitchen.

This place is authentic as it gets. Family owned and operated Clean and comfy. Great portions. We split the duck. Crispy on the outside and tender inside. Bread and dumplings were fantastic. We will return soon!

I was here about a week ago. My first back in ohhh 12 years!! OMG has time flew by. I was craving some boho dumplings and I remember going to this place as a kid with my mom. I went with high expectations because I remember it being ahhhhhmazing. Sadly I was let down. I tried the cabbage rolls. The meat inside was white and reminded of what spam would look like so I left that on the plate and just ate the cabbage. The dumplings were great, but extra dry. They should serve them with gravy, they didn't tho so I stole the gravy from my aunts pork tenderloin(which she loved). My "cabbage" should have just been called sauerkraut because thats basically what it was. GROSS! not my thing at all. The cucumber salad was the shhhhhhhhhhit tho! I would totally get that if I were you. Its basically the cucumber salad at asian places, but shredded like no other!

Husband and I came here on a Friday night. Once we were seated, the water and rye bread (yum!) was brought out immediately. The meal comes with soup, potatoes or dumplings, vegetable, and dessert. We both ordered potato soup and, although my husband really liked his, I found mine to be very concentrated. It tasted as though it came out of a can and needed to be diluted. For main course I ordered stuffed cabbage and my husband ordered Farmer's Market Special - a dish that had sausage, roasted pork, pork butt, and meat loaf. Stuffed cabbage - the sauce was very bland and a little sweet. The stuffing was a little "grainy" and dry. Farmer's Market Special: The pork butt was dry, the sausage was ok, the meat loaf was garlicky and "gamy". Unfortunately, I didn't get to try the roasted pork because it was devoured by my husband. He said it was the best dish on the plate. The sauerkraut was sweet-ish and the desserts are definitely not home made. The cocktails/drinks are stiff and cheap and the service is extremely fast. Our bill was $32 with 2 entrees, 2 cocktails/drinks, 1 coffee, and 1 diet coke.

EVERYTHING IS PERFECT! Been eating their since College. Love the crunchy Breaded Pork tenderloin, the dumplings are old world, the breads are excellent. The sweet/sour sauerkraut, are old world and excellent and , the desserts are home made and the potato soup is as pleasantly thick as Split Pea soup. I have been eating there for more than a generation and though I am Italian, The Czech Plaza makes my second most favorite ethic food. It is the best, I advise ordering the dumplings they are as good as any I have had even overseas. I am a fairly big eater and yet I always have enough left to take home for the next day.

Service was a 5, food a 2-3. A little bit disappointing, but it may have been my selections combined with a first visit. The rye bread is in fact delicious. I started out with the Liver Dumpling Soup. I've had better. The broth was good, but while the dumpling tasted ok, it was a strange, darker color inside. A little bit unappetizing. After much perusing of the menu, I did one of the specials-Meatloaf with Potato Pancakes. I liked the texture of the meatloaf. It is quite fine, and more pale in color than one might expect. Other than being too salty, it was acceptable. The brown gravy served with the meatloaf was very good. The Potato Pancakes seemed like they had been sitting around for hours, if not all day. They were quite greasy and leaden. Disappointing. With exception of the soup, none of the food was especially hot, either. This always makes me a little nervous. While I understand some of the entrees can do well prepared ahead, they need to be served hot. The Cucumber Salad was tasty. The cucumbers were peeled and grated, which I'd never seen before. But it worked. Very refreshing. The restaurant itself is very cute. Harsh fluorescent lighting in areas, but otherwise clean and charming. They have a fairly good-sized party room adjacent to the main dining room. I was expecting the place to be full of elderly folks, but that was not the case at all. There were all ages there. They close what I'd consider early at 8:00, and there were still people rolling in there at 7:45. There was also a steady stream of carryout orders walking out of there. Seems like a popular area spot! Our server was absolutely perfect. Will definitely go back to Czech Plaza to try different items on the menu. I'm not giving up, yet!

Great "Bohemian Food" "Horrible, unforgivable service!!!" My Father-in-law and Mother-in-law have eaten at the Czech Plaza for years and my husband & I loved the Czech Plaza too, so when my Mother-in-law passed away the family thought it appropriate to have her funeral lunch there. My daughter was too full to finish her kolache asked our waitress for take home box, the waitress asked her "what for?" Very rude! Wait it gets worse....My 96 year-old father-in-law had buried his wife of 70 years that morning and when he tried to pay with his Discover card the waitress said loudly "We don't take Discover", then he gave her his Visa card and she very loudly exclaimed "this card is expired!" Thankfully another family member used their card to pay the bill. A restaurant with good service would have handled this situation in a quiet manner rather than shouting at an elderly customer! We brought 35 people into their restaurant on a Thursday afternoon, and this is the kind of service we get? I found the surly waitress' attitude toward my grieving father-in-law inexcusable! And when my son mentioned the rude waitress to the Manager she didn't seem to care! We will never go there again!

Perhaps I chose poorly. I have spent time in Eastern Europe. I have had the food. I have eaten well. This was not my experience at Czech Plaza. I must admit that my motives in coming here were not pure. I was on the hunt for the next Paulina Porizkova. She was not here. My disappointment grew from this point. I brought Vamsi to Berwyn the day after he got cooties from a Cocktail stripper. Neither one of us had had Czech food before, nor had we ever been to Berwyn, so we thought this would be the perfect place to catch up, have an adventure and try some ethnic food. Granted, I can miss the side of a barn when I am zoning out and driving, but I didn't see this place. It's right on Cermak/22, but unless you are studying for the numbers, you'll pass it by. It's an unassuming building, which is fine. I am not here for the party. I am here for the food. Our really nice waitress greeted Vamsi and me and I was charmed by her genuine friendliness. We were the only two brown folks in the place and were the youngest by a good forty years - we stood out. Nevertheless, we were greeted and treated with nothing but courtesy. Vamsi ordered water and I got a big, honkin' Czech beer served in a gigantic glass. Things are looking good. Now, I had done my homework. I knew that I could get a copious amount of food for little cash. I was ready to order. I ordered...and the waitress was not feeling it. Vamsi had shamed me by ordering something off the superspecialâ„¢ menu. My fried porkchops were not going to cut it. I relented and ordered the 1/4 duck and pork chop with cabbage and dumplings and liver dumpling soup. The food. There was a lot of it. But it didn't taste particularly good. In fact, it didn't taste much like anything. The soup was a broth with a GIANT liver meatball in the middle of it. Yes, I ordered a liver dumpling soup. I was ready for liver. But this? This was LLLIIIVVVEERRR. I thought happy thoughts as I carved (yep) into it. I remembered why I hadn't had liver & onions since I was a boy. It wasn't a bad taste. It was the mental game of what I was eating. They should have called it "brown candy." No problems eating that. My entree was equally laborious. The duck and pork were both boiled to brown greyness. It made me sad to look at. My dumplings were heavy and plentiful. I was hoping for light, pierogi-like fare. Nah. These were DENSE. The potato that bore these babies must have been a good fifty feet and fifty pounds. My cabbage (and I like cabbage) was awash in a thick, sweet sauce. I didn't care for it. I like my cabbage dry and crisp. Broken of spirit and out of breath from attempting to eat my meal, I perked up at the idea of dessert. Mmm, I like dessert. Not this one. I got the apple strudel. I was cold...and tasteless. Disappointing. Again, nothing tasted bad, per se, but nothing was really good. It was culinary muzak - heavy, drab and a little depressing muzak. Hmm, maybe not muzak. Maybe it was more like a dirge. Ah man, I am sounding so mean. And I don't mean to be...but this meal was exhausting in a bad way. My food baby came by way of Rosemary. If this is indicative of Czech food, I fear that my time in Prague will be spent at Burger King.

I grew up with Grandma's Bohemian food for Sunday dinner. This place is as close to that as I can get. Dad and I had a few of the stand-bys: Koprova Omacka (Beef with Dill Gravy) and "Half 1/2 Half" ( sliced roast pork and fried pork tenderloin cutlet), both with dumplings, cabbage and liver dumpling soup. All were amazingly good. The soup was very flavorful- lots of garlic in the broth. The liver dumpling was tender yet firm- pure heaven! The dill gravy was the best I've ever had- the sauce gets most of its flavor from the brine, as the beef is actually pickled first. My only complaint- the gravy for the pork was more of a packaged brown gravy, not the best. The waitress, a young Eastern European cutie (yes they ARE there), was very nice and brought us extra dill gravy instead-SCORE! Dessert (who has room?!?!) was homemade apple strudel - to go, finished at home after my flight to Atlanta. Sweet dreams! Do be sure to have a stein of the Pilsner Urquell- its a large pint and goes down so well with the food. A word of advice: When you arrive, you will want to dive head-first into the yummy homemade soft rye bread. Go slow- it will fill you up. That is the major reason why they're so quick with the leftover boxes. But, when you are ready to go, be sure to grab the bread too- thats the true "Bohemian" way to do it :) For years our favorite place was the Corner Restaurant in Brookfield. Now that they've closed, I think we finally found our replacement.

This has been a family favorite for a while. The price is awesome. Plus the portions are huge so you are guaranteed left overs for lunch tomorrow. Don't go too late though because they close at 9 ( think) and start to run out of the specials as it gets later. If you are driving there it is easy to pass. It is on the northside of the street (Cermak) and it a small one story building next to a bank. Keep your eyes open for street parking once you see the laundromat.

This place has great food at ridiculously awesome prices. The liver dumpling soup is phenomenal. Huge plates for little money. 2 people can share an entree and probably have some left-overs. Love this place.

We usually get carry out. I'm a big fan of their breaded pork tenderloin. A nice crust. I like their dumplings as well. My other half loves their mashed potatoes; I think they are okay. I really like their chicken noodle soup. Lots of chicken and lots of noodles. The home made rye bread is quite tasty too. The portions are huge. You will definitely have leftovers!!

I have gone to this place since I was a kid, with my grandparents. Good european food at good prices. I don't like the Liver Dumpling soup, but I wouldn't like it anywhere, most people into that sort of thing say it's great here. I like the duck, the pork tenderloin, or the Svickova. Their cabbage is a great side, the dumplings are good too. Last time I was there they had spaetzel, and besides being too large of a size they are ok too. The gravy is amazing in that it goes with pork, beef, duck, on dumplings, or on potatoes (just the svickova has a diffrent gravy). They also have small portions at lower prices for senior citizens or just those watching what they eat.

I wish I had something different to add- but everyone has pretty much covered this place. I love that you can get a complete meal with bread, soup, entree, and dessert for less than ten dollars. The bread is thick cut, homemade rye bread that is wonderful dipped in the soup. I haven't had the liver dumpling soup, but I can vouch for the creamy mushroom. It is hot, tasty, but the mushroom taste is unoffensive. I say this because I do not like mushrooms, but I enjoy this soup. I usually order the Chicken Paprika because it is one of my favorite dishes that my grandmother occasionally makes. For $8.50 you get half a chicken! The orangey-pink gravy may throw some off, but it is rich, thick, and perfect. It works well with the huge bread dumplings, something else my grandmother makes from scratch. I have sampled the breaded pork tenderloin and the beef koprava with dill gravy- It's all good! I usually come towards the end of the night, when most of the better sounding desserts are out. Like someone said, the desserts are the weakest part of this establishment, but by that time, I'm usually so stuffed, that I don't care much.

This is right by my place so I wanted to try it out. The boyfriend didn't like it much but I did. I ordered the breaded steak and it came with potatoes, soup and dessert, and I also got a pint. I wish I could go more into detail but I was here a few months ago so it's not so clear but I know i wasn't floored by it. I remember it being super cheap and a ton of food so I will go back and update.

You can spend a little under $10 per person and still be full and have leftovers. The real gem about this place is their outstanding goulash soup (which is only served on Saturdays and they won't make an exception is you ask for it on any other day) The food portions are large and the servers can be hard to understand with their strong Czech accents which gives this place a strong sense of authenticity. This place has a strong "Old School" vibe since the majority of their customer base tend to be older Eastern European people. The owners, who are usually the hostess/bartender are wonderful people.

If you have a taste for Czech food and don't want to spend a bundle Czech Plaza is the place fo you. I visit CP with my brother and his family several times throught the year. I order th Market Special. Cabobs and sausage, ham and pork, with liver dumbling soup. It's an acquired taste comfort food. Excellent!

Holy cow, if you enjoy Czech / Polish food, you'll love Czech Plaza. It's my favorite Czech / Polish restaurant (even better than Bobak's). There are so many good choices on the menu, but the breaded Pork Tenderloin is so hard to pass up....a spectacular version - crunchy outside, moist and succulent inside, wonderful gravy (especially over the dumplings). That dish is really one of the best I've ever had for "casual" food. The Liver Dumpling soup is to die for. And I love the cucumber "salad" (really, thinly sliced cucumbers in a vinegary, sugary "dressing). And their own rye bread is great - my family likes it because it's not too strong, though I could take it stronger. Service is okay, but can be a bit off for drink refills (so I ask for a pitcher of water every time) or if you need something once your entree is brought to the table. But the food makes up for it. Second favorite entree?? Svickova - pickled beef in a sour cream sauce. But that Breaded Pork Tenderloin is so difficult to avoid. The portions are enormous. I always have enough for a second full meal of leftovers. I'd give 5 stars if the service were a bit better.

This is one of the very first places my hub too me to when we first started dating, and it also was the place we took our families to after we got married (married in court, lunch at Czech Plaza). While I wasn't really big into Bohemian food, I am now. My in-laws love meeting us here for dinner and it's cheap...$30 + tip pays for 4 adult dinners. Like Ed B. said, the breaded pork tenderloin is the thing to order. My sister doesn't like anything fried, but she will eat the breaded pork tenderloin from Czech Plaza whenever she gets a chance. They've got great dumplings, too!! I've had the roasted pork and the pierogies, but my first choice will always be the breaded pork tenderloin. And there's always too much food!! With dinner, you get soup, and a choice of side dish (sauerkraut, sweet cabbage, and some other selections), dessert (go for the kolackys and coffee. Beverages and alcohol are separate. I believe they carry a small variety of Bohemian beers, too!! If you are anywhere near North Riverside shopping mall, make a bee-line to Czech Plaza for dinner. But it's got to be before 8:30 p.m. They like to close shop early, as do most Bohemian places in our neck of the woods.

...ah-ha. We found you Czech Plaza! Three of us: Me, the boyfriend, and the brother-in-law felt the need for someone else to make us a home-cooked meal and wandered over to Czech plaza. When you walk in - the place is quaint, the tables are close together (all the better to point at the next table and say "I'll have that!"), the service is quick, the beer on tap is cold. The ages ranged from late 20's to 80's. I.E: taken my sweety out- to taken my sweet old Oma out. We had: Pork w/sour cream sauce and bread dumplings. The Farmer's Meat Combo (or something that sounded like that). The pork & pork combo (close enough). All the dinners came with bread basket, choice of Awesome soups (try the Liver dumpling!) and dessert. All between $8.00 and $9.50!!! You almost can't believe the prices - they must be circa 1970?! The food was delicious and plentiful, the soup was exactly like my Mom would have made. The desserts were small and a little bland...but come-on, at that point you'd already had bread, soup, a full plate of food, and a bowl o' gravy on the side...who had room? If you like pork, breaded pork tenderloin, pork meatloaf (yum!), or Czech pork sausage - And if you like gravy, brown gravy, sourcream based gravy, and pork gravy - Well, visit Czech plaza. For the three of us and three half liters of beer the bill came to $43.00, Nice.

Excellent. Most people like Klas down the street from here, but I like the food at Czech Plaza better (though i thought Klas had better Ghoulash soup). The price is also better here, but there is no salad bar. I either get the Wienerschnitzel or the 1/2 Roast Duck.

YUMMY!!!! The food is very similar to German food, and maybe polish, but is in my opinion executed better than any of those. First off, the atmosphere is old world, the exact opposite of trendy. There are many old people here also. So what? I go for the food. The liver dumpling soup is unbeatable, you have to try it ( if you don't hate liver). Lately I've been ordering the turkey dinner only served on Sundays. OMG! I can have all dark meat, SO tasty and juicy and easily 10oz+! I like it with stuffing and mashed with gravy. I also like bread dumplings served with a side of homemade gravy. The dinners come with fresh rye bread, starter, entree, potato and vegetable, AND dessert! Turkey is $10.00 or $11.00. Most dinners range from $8.00-$14.00. Last time my boyfriend had a medely of 3 meats, each was truly tender and succulent!! I like the duck, crispy, juicy and priced well! I can't remember everything I've had since I've been going on and off for 30 years. As I've said, I like the food here better than any Polish or German restaurant I can think of! Make an effort to get there, it's 10 minutes west of Chicago.

Wow. You can never tell what you will find along a busy street when you are just driving around. We were on our way to another lunch spot and decided to stop in here and give it a try. I am so glad we did because the food here is delicious and the portions/value amazing. For about $30, the two of us were STUFFED with pork tenderloin, Prague cutlet, bread dumplings, cabbage and veggies, fresh rye bread and dessert (and sodas). Sure, we were the youngest people there by about 30-40 years, but who cares? The waitress was super nice and explained that the Prague cutlet was a mix of ground beef and pork with the same brown gravy and kindly wrapped the husband's strudel to go when he couldn't eat any more. We will be back for sure.

My grandmother is Czech and grew up in this neighborhood, so of COURSE she wanted to come here for lunch on a Saturday. We had the place to ourselves!!! The inside decor is stunning, VERY interesting, and you can tell the owners put a LOT of time, effort and love into the place. There are all these mysterious back rooms, a beer garden, banquet rooms, 2nd floor, it was expansive. I have to say, the food was so-so. Fairly bland, but portions were huge. If you're in the area- go. The eye candy is worth it, the menu is authentic, although not as full-flavored as the old country, and you'll leave feeling like you took a trip to the old Czech Republic, before it was the Czech Republic.

Great place for a group lunch. Delicious food and excellent service. My boyfriend's grandpa is polish and he LOVES to come here because food reminds him of home. HUGE servings. One meal can definitely feed you 2-3 times.

I was gonna be a jerk and knock off 1 STAR for them not having hot sauce available.I DIDNT CARE that Czech food isnt traditionally eaten with hot sauce. All I needed the hot sauce for was my chicken noodle soup!!!! Luckily, the Mexican busboy saved the day!!! VIVA MEXICO!!! Like I said,I WAS going to deduct a star BUT THE FOOD WON ME OVER!!! It was very good. The apricot kolackys were AMAZING.Soooo,They got their star back.lol.Totally recommend.Prices are very reasonable.Service is excellent.

Cheers!

Have never been to IL, and have yet to eat here..but I am giving them 5 stars anyway since everything on the menu looks exactly how my mom and grandma make Czech food. Great job keeping it authentic!!

Awesome place, came here with my GF and we both enjoyed the food. Portions are gigantic, you get a free desert and the food itself is excellent. I'm not a good judge of Czech food but it seemed very authentic and we certainly liked it.
