Portillo's is the gold standard for what a fast food burger should be. While I guess it's on the pricey end for it's category ($5), it's well worth it. Most restaurant burgers don't compare to a classic, char-boiled cheeseburger. Portillo's tries to take care of its employees as well, so you tend to get better than expected service. That being said, if you go during rush periods, your food can be hit or miss. Sometimes they'll accidentally throw in something else or you'll be the one missing that side of fries. It happens a lot at this location, so just check your food before you leave.

Greasy fast food fix. Best fries and awesome chocolate cake!!! I love portillos consistent food throughout the many locations.

Consistent great quality. This why I'm a regular visitor. I also like the atmosphere. Even though it pretty crowded most of the time, they get our food up fairly quickly. Is it gourmet? No, but definitely a step above fast food.

Oh my...hotdog dragged through the garden, cheesy beef dipped with hot peppers, salty crinkle fries, and cold beer on tap! Simply Yummy!!

Good food, crappy service. I went through the drive thru, got charged twice & was missing $11.00 (4 hotdogs) worth of food when I got home. Called to get the charges reversed & the manager was acting as if I was lying. Eventually got the charges reversed 3 days later after I had to call several times as the manager never called me back. If you're going to charge that much money for food, please have the teenagers working there know how to slide a credit card and how to properly prepare orders before handing them off.

We pick up Portillo's for lunch at work every so often and we always love it! They make it so easy to place a pick-up order :) The food is so good and so salty! I could eat a beef and cheddar croissant from Portillo's daily!

Good food, not super great. The service is quick but I'm not sure if I like the lines and feeling like I'm waiting for my high school lunch all over again. They do have a great salad ordering area with different types of salads many other places do not offer. The atmosphere is always loud and busy. There is a lot of different seating though. booths, tables, and counter areas. Food is tasty. The prices are average. The best part is all the decorating. There are decorations all over the place literally! I think there is even a car hanging down and some balcony areas (not for customers) with fake people and old time scenes and attire. PS Must try the chocolate cake!

If you are looking for cheap food, that is delicious then this is the place to go! Everything that I have tried has been fabulous! They have wonderful hot dogs, Italian beef, beef and cheddar croissants, salad, chili, you name it and they have it! You don't have to leave a tip either, because you order up front which is nice for a change. If you go, I guarantee that you will want to come again!

Cannot go wrong with Portillos! We try to stop when we're in the area (no Portillos in Louisiana, boo). Love the fries!!! Everyone can find something on the menu they will love :)

Portilly's, as I like to call it, is a Chicagoland institution that now apparently has some Indiana or even Arizona locations. No reason it shouldn't go national. They do mad business...at all hours of the day. And this is because they cook up good food "Chicago style," if that means anything. To me it means a nice char taste to my burger...a big Polish done up Chicago style (with a salad on top and sport peppers), a tasty Italian sausage with sweet pepps or giardiniera (or both). Italian beef I'm not so big on but they do that well too apparently. You can add cheese to it too for a cheesy beef. Port's fries are crinkle cut and salted just right. I'm not a chocolate guy but their chocolate cake is legendary and pretty damn good. Portilly's calls its semi-separate pasta/salad area Barnelli's and that's good too. Garbage salad doesn't have the best name but it's a damn good salad with a bunch of meat and cheese on it. Haven't had pastas really but they look and smell great. Prices are fair enough, a little above fast food prices but then you're getting better than fast food food. A salad is $7-9, a burger about $4-5. A double burger seems too much at $8. Generally, you'll spend about $10 to put together a sammich/fries/draaank meal. Portilly's. That's all.

I have to stop by Portillos whenever I'm in town. I went for a dipped Italian beef with hot and sweet peppers and was not disappointed. The sandwich is huge and I had trouble finishing it. The bread is perfect and while the meat isn't anything special it still makes for a great sandwich. All the staff was friendly and there wasn't much of a line around lunch time on a Thursday. I really hope the chain revs up their national expansion. It was be dangerous to have one nearby.

Undercooked chicken. Will pass on this location in the future, quality has gone way down.

I've been a customer of Dick Portillo for 40 years. An amazing high value, high quality restaurant. Now that he is retired and it is run as a franchise it is plummeting, in my opinion, in all aspects. I was particularly fond of the Jefferson Ave Portillos in Naperville where I used to live. Great taste, generous portions, welcoming and efficient drive-thru service (listen up McDonalds). Haven't been there is several months. So it may still be an outstanding location. But I moved and now my closest Portillos is on Randall Rd, Batavia IL. The drive-thru service is disorganized, not as welcoming, and sadly the quality and portions are quickly deteriorating. I ordered the chopped salad twice so far (the bowl is getting smaller and smaller while the price remains fairly constant). Twice now the sealed salad dressing containers were HALF FULL. Twice this has happened, so it's not just a happenstance. Cutting corners right away. The worst thing a good restaurant can do to its customers is follow the franchise model. Franchises, in most cases, put profit over customer and employee satisfaction. I will give the Randall Rd, Batavia, IL Portillos one last shot, but my hopes are not very high. We miss your gold standard Dick Portillo!

I've been to Chicagoland a number of times and never had the pleasure of trying Portillos until now. I decided to try s few things so I got a classic Chicago dog, Italian Beef and some small fries. I am absolutely floored with the quality of food that I got for eleven dollars. Normally you can't write much about a hot dog but I think this is one of the better ones I've had, the only one rivaling Portillos would be the dog I had at Wrigley Field, but that was mostly due to the atmosphere. The Italian Beef was phenomenal but it was a little dry.... Should have had it dipped. Fries were typical crinkle cut but were 're fried perfectly. Although this isn't Portillos flagship restaurant, the food here is amazing. You owe it to yourself to try it.

I love hot dogs. I finally went to our local one here in AZ and was rather disappointed. I knew on a weekend it would be busy but there really seemed to be no organization what so ever! Now the food, I ordered a jumbo chili cheese dog no onions and a large order of fries to share with my wife while she had a normal chili cheese dog no onions as well, the bun was the best part of it. The chili tasted just like canned Hormel's chili and could barely even taste the hot dog or cheese. I won't give it 1 or no stars because that is all I had while there. I will have to try more before changing it. I could do a better chili cheese dog at home than here.

Portillos when Mr Portillo owned it... 5 stars. Now?!? Its horrible! Their hot dogs do not taste nearly as good. Theyve been messing up food orders and it is so different now. I am beyond sad to see Portillos go down hill. Please keep doing it Mr Portillos way!! Thats how it became such a success, not cheaping us all out. $2.50 for a REAL hot dog. Stop trying to get more money by buying cheaper food and supplies, thats how the business will suffer.

I head back up to the Chicagoland area in the Spring and Summer. First thing I have to do when I get there, is head to the Portillo's on Randall in Geneva and get my "I haven't had a Chicago Dog all winter" fix. I order a Chicago Hot Dog with everything (including hot peppers) and a malted shake, go sit with my back to a corner so no one can sneak up on me from behind and steal the hot dog. I then devour the meal. Aahhh, total bliss. Have never had their Italian beef which is supposed to be good. I end up going in saying I'm going to get the Italian beef, get to the front of the line and out comes "Portillo's hot dog with everything". Next time, next time.

If your ever in chicago and want fast food i recommend portillos, its great to either sit down and eat or just go through the drive through! The menu is neverending and everything on it is delicious! Especially the cheese fries! It has great interior decorations and is quick and yummy!

  • Marissa M.

I really wish I could have given them 5 stars.. I love portillos the food is amazing but the staff is not. 9 times out of 10 I have to deal with someone from their staff having an attitude. The manager is also completely rude and unhelpful, my order is always wrong and things are missing when I go through the drive thru and then when I go inside the people at the cash registers have the nerve to ask me if the card I'm paying with is my parents. I am not a 15 year old kid I am an adult and that's just ridiculous to say. The staff needs better training and it's not going to come from the manager

Italian Beef. Hot peppers. Mozzarella cheese. I don't eat red meat. Well, I say I don't. And I don't. But here, I do. This is literally the only red meat I eat because it is so good. The line moves fast and with all Portillo's restaurants, they are fairly organized. Only downside is the crappy parking situation outside. Not a lot of parking. However, since the breakfast place next door is closed down, you could park there..but then have to trudge through the snow.

I seriously believe there is crack in the food here, it is that addictive. The Italian Beef Sandwich with Hot Peppers and a side of Cheese Fries are my poisons of choice. This combo is a must have!

NOTE: Review is NOT about the food or interior at this particular Portillo's. Parking lot infrastructure (set-up) and design IS HORRIBLE. Bring your common sense along during peak hours to witness firsthand this 'accidents-waiting-to-happen' zone. - One main entrance/exit from parking lot. This alone is cause for a disaster. - Drive lane(s) are extremely narrow. If you didn't know better, you'd almost think it was a one way lane. Combine this now with the fact of two way traffic of cars both coming in and attempting to leave the lot, AND cars backing out of the adjacent parking spots. - Parking spots seem very confined and overly close together (this goes back to how the set-up of the parking lot was originally designed wrong), almost like sardines packed in a tin-can, or two pounds of sausage shoved into a one pound bag. If you get a big SUV or van next to you, its very hard to get into your car. - The drive-thru lane is almost an optical illusion (and, it is always backed up a mile). The way the lot almost "seems" to flow into the drive-thru lane MAKES IT LOOK as if you can also exit the lot this way. NOT TRUE. If you get into this lane trying to exit the lot, you are literally stuck for about the next half hour. Based on all of this alone, I will never attend this Portillo's again UNLESS it is at an oddball late hour of night where traffic is very minimal, OR, I am parked in some adjacent area of the strip mall and simply 'walk' over here. My doing either though in this particular area borders on practically never again.

It is what it is. A hot dog place. If not for the chocolate cake, I'd rarely eat here. I never understand why people are willing to wait in their atrocious drive-thru line.

I love portillos but this particular restaurant has messed up my order multiple times and the last two times I have gotten the ribs from here they have been over cooked and dry and when I have complained about it to management bc it is an awfully expensive meal for fast food they have done nothing and offered me nothing as compensation which seems awfully unprofessional for an establishment of this size. The last time I got their ribs and they were subpar to say the least and I told them about my last two times getting poor quality food they said sorry and there was nothing they could do other than offer me a desert or something along those lines. I won't be going to back this place.

This place is very inconsistent, unfortunately the largest consistency has been poor. I would say 1 out of 4 visits the food has been good and up to expectations. I always order the "Big Beef" sandwich and most of the time when I get it they should have re-named it for what it really is..."The Big Bread." For an $8 beef sandwich one would think you would be getting more beef than the regular beef sandwich, not just a larger roll! Last one I got and that might just be the last was dry, lacking in beef and taste. Now I will admit there have been a couple times they have gotten this thing right and it was awesome! But the majority of the times it stinks and I have had enough. To have to deal with the crazy, chaotic parking lot to get a subpar sandwich is getting real old. Last visit they also forgot my GF's bacon for her baked potato, but I did get the usual dry, Big Bread Beef sandwich. This place needs to work on their consistency of product and service. This was not a big deal but the worker at the window who gave us our food referred to me as "Boss"?? Seemed an odd way to greet a customer....

  • Davo B.

Everyone knows their beef is the best and I've had roughly 457 of them and they have all been good. The dogs are also excellent. The fish has gone downhill as back about 5 years ago it was the best fish sandwich in the area but the last couple of times its been poor and one time had some plastic part of something in the sandwich. I told the guy up at the counter figuring they'd give me a piece of cake or something and he gave me a puzzled look and then walked away from me. Their salads are also very good we like the hot grilled chicken Ceasars and the poppy seed fruit

I frequent Portillo's on a fairly regular basis- it has some of my favorite foods- but I wanted to write a special review for a private event I attended at this location. My husband and I, along with my in-laws, chose Portillo's as the location for our rehearsal dinner for our wedding. Needless to say, the event was wonderful. They had the private room ready in advance, with the appetizer out and ready when the very first guest arrived. All of the food was amazing, with proper temperatures maintained throughout the 2.5 hour event. The deposit to have a room was very small, and you could have quite a large crowd. They even had the servers do our dessert for us- and let us have two because one of the Grandma's is allergic to chocolate. We also brought in a special dessert, and they cut and served that too. I would absolutely recommend this location for a private event, they were wonderful!

Great Italian Beefs, Chicago Style Hotdogs, Burgers, salads, and milkshakes. You can even purchase Italian Beef kits to make your own at home. I prefer my Italian Beef dipped in the gravy. Good cheese fries as well. My wife likes putting the cheese sauce on her Italian Beef.

I grew up eating Portillos. They have the best fries of any food chain!!! Get the onion rings well done. They are so good that way. They need to STOP asking me if I want peppers on my beef after I ordered it and told them the way I want it. "Give me a combo dipped with mozzarella, a large fry and a large coke that's all". Did I ask for peppers?? No I didn't!!!!

Always a great choice, their hot dogs, beefs, tamales, chop salads, cheese fries, shakes and malts. I could go on and on about how great this place is, a must if you have never been! The chocolate cake shake it awesome!

I have been to many different Portillos and usually have a positive experience. However, I'm ranking this one lower than the others. My wife and I both had the Breaded Chicken Croissant. Mine was cooked fine, but my wife's was overcooked. Tough as nails. I will say that the Manager was kind enough to give us our money back. The parking lot is very small and hard to maneuver. All other Portillos I have dined at have nice large open parking lots. My biggest beef with Portillos is their bathrooms. Every time you go into one it looks like a thousand people have used it. It feels very dirty and something always has a problem from the paper towel dispenser to the faucet. They need to spend more time on these facilities as they have a high traffic load. The wait for the ordering was very quick. The wait for the food was somewhat lengthy. I understand that this happens anytime you order something a bit different than the norm as we ordered fries without salt. However, you can't tell me that this day in age that no one else has requested the same fries. Can't they have them pre-made!

Have been a longtime customer and employee of Portillos, and can honestly say this location has a great staff, great food, is well managed and has something for everyone. -Great Italian beef -Hot dogs are always on par -Cheese fries are delicious -Chicken tenders are great -Chocolate cake is the best in the area The salads are very delicious too, however if you are looking to watch your figure do not eat here. They do not publish nutritional facts for a reason and let that be known. Other downside is no kids menu, but stick with a nudie hot dog, or chicken tenders. Very good choices for the kids.

I have to eenie meenie miney moe every time we go there. Do I want a beef or a Chicago dog..hmmm. Chocolate cake shakes are a MUST! The drive thru line can suck at times, but it's worth the wait.

Best hot dogs on my list. Beef's are awesome also, probably a close second behind Johnnies in Elmwood Park. Amazing chocolate cake. Even better, get a piece blended into your chocolate shake and go into a sugar coma. Fries are great. Everything is good, never had a bad meal and all locations are consistent. I grew up with them at the first Dog House in Villa Park. Dick Portillo knows fast food.

Seriously... You can not go wrong with Portillos... - Get your chicago style hotdog on! - Get Italian Beef as big as your head! Soaking or Dry or anyplace in between. - Get sausage and peppers! - Get fantastic salads with tons of fixin's! - I have never had their burgers but people swear they are some of the best. On this particular location, it is kind of difficult to get into and the parking can be a struggle but it is worth it!

You can never go wrong with Portillos. Great prices with so many options and choices that it is great for a large group. I enjoy taking out of towners here to eat and see their reactions.

This Portillos is right by my work, which is why I tend to eat here a lot. This store is well run (just like most Portillo's are) I always get the chopped salad only because you can't really find anything else like it around. The chocolate cake and the strawberry shortcake is awesome as well, so give em a try, you won't be disappointed.

Juicy, flavorful, authentic, tasty: this is a great place to pick up a dog or a beef in the Aurora/Batavia area. It's just up the road from my workplace, so it was ideal for those lunch runs or a nice offsite break. There are a couple of seating pockets where it is quieter; I've used those for meetings with interns in a safe, non-workplace environment. They don't care how long you stay, and drink refills are free, so you're in good shape. This Portillo's also has a salad counter which vegetarians say is pretty good. Also, for some odd reason, they have a chocolate cake that is insanely good (whoda thunk it?). Who DOESN'T crave a dog and/or a beef every so often? Give in to that desire here, and you'll be happy and fulfilled.

  • Craig R.

i have drivven by this location several times. It is probably one of the largest Portillo's you will see and it is packed ...all the time. I grabbed a dog and a burger and was happy munching away. I cannot comment on the salad counter since I went nowhere neear it.

Love coming here when I have to stay out in the Western suburbs for late nights at work. The service is incredibly friendly and the food is obviously delicious. I swear they can make a chopped salad in 30 seconds. I will continue to be a loyal customer as long as I am working in the area.

I go to Portillo's for one thing - the best Italian beef on the planet. This location is just down the road from my brother's place so we end up here frequently. On a weekend night, it's quite amazing to watch how smoothly things happens. Until recently, people here in Cincinnati thought that an Italian beef sandwich was the same as a French dip sandwich. Poor misguided souls! Now, if only Portillo's would expand to the Tri-state area. They built two in southern California, so why not one in northern Kentucky!

I am such a fan of Portillo's that my family knows to stop here after picking me up from the airport. I am such a fan that my family shipped Portillo's hot dogs to me for my 31st Birthday. I even donned the little paper Portillo's hat, with pride, as I prepared the ingredients of my birthday hotdogs. If I happen to overhear someone's plans to travel to the Chicagoland area, I insist that they go to a Portillo's (I even print out a list of locations) and tell them they must have a hot dog, Italian Beef, crinkle cut fries, a giant goblet of ice cold draft beer, AND a slice of the chocolate cake. Each time, the trip to Portillo's is what is remembered from that trip. This location happens to be the closest to my family's home. The prohibition-era decor sparks interesting questions from my young nieces and nephew, but there is no question that this is a place the whole family can enjoy. It is an especially great place to take the kids right before catching the latest IMAX movie across the street at Randall 15. Sure, there are "healthy" options like salad, but that's not why I come here.

  • Captain K.

Honestly, I can't recall a negative Portillo's time. Not from this location or any other. Which by the way I recommend taking a Portillo's tour, they are all different and unique. I usually enjoy the Italian beef or hot dog and cheese fries when I go. If you go through the drive thru don't be alarmed if there's 10-15 cars ahead of you, it usually always go quick.

All I have to say is no matter how busy they are ! their cashier always has a smile.. Myself and my familia enjoy the Ribs! and there chicago style hot dog ... wait their cobb salad is Awesome the only thing I think it's missing is Avocado.. otherwise I think its the bestest all around town

I'm choosing this one to review since I've gotten it most often, but the one in Dekalb and the one in St. Charles are just as good. I adore their Italian beef. Whoever made it standard to have dry, regular, and dipped should be given an award. I LOVE extra juicy beefs. The staff there is kinda hysterical. The things they say into their microphones! Once or twice I've had them mess up an order, but really, everyone has an off day. And...Chocolate Cake Shake? REALLY? Talk about fan-f*ing-tastic! The fries are good, the cake is good, the chopped salad is good, the beefs are good. Just don't ask for custom stuff on your hotdog...that's when you can run into problems lol.

    (4)
  • Michelle F.

Absolutely every single time we go here it is delicious! I stopped eating meat for 9 years and the ONLY thing I missed was a Portillo's Italian beef with hot peppers. Well, I am back and their beef is still great.

  • Andy G.

The chopped salad is the best item on the menu. The dressing is different in a good way. It's creamy and a little sweet. If you like croutons ask for some extra on the side. Most of the other menu selections are no beater or different than what you find at other burger or hot dog stands. I find the burgers to be a little dry.

  • Miranda B.

No free refills. Gal taking order wrote down 2 fries instead of one. No big deal that is until the pickup. Gal handing out food asked did you order 1 or 2 fries. I told her one and she handed me my bag. After checking receipt I noticied I was charged for 2 fries and she did not correct the mistake when I went to the counter. I took the receipt back up to her and told her still not a big deal, I paid for something I did not receive, lets just call it even and I will take a slice of chocolate cake. She said since there was a difference in price she would have to refund me my money. Are you kidding, it was Portillo's mistake and they cant comp me the 90 cents difference. This is not a best standards business practice especially when it was their error. I had an idea of this as soon as I saw they did not have a customer fountain drink machine and they do not give free refills which almost everyone does. They pay at least 9 or 10/hr for an employee to get drinks that customers pay a miminum of $1.55 for when it only costs them 3 cents for the drink. Hey Portillo's - what is more cost effective? You are actually losing money by not having a self serve drink machine. Really, who can drink 52 refills.

I recently took my first trip to Chicago, and I had told my friend that I needed real Chicago Dogs when I was there. She said Portillos was the only place to go! She was right! I would have taken pictures, but everything smelled and tasted so good that I couldn't stop eating long enough to grab the camera. I got 2 Chicago Dogs with fries and a vanilla milkshake. The shake was thick and flavorful, the fries were crispy and perfect, but the hot dogs? Amazing! Prices were very reasonable. The only disadvantage is I live 800 miles away from Portillos and crave them now!

So I have heard Portillos serves food other than Italian beefs with hot peppers, but personally I can't confirm that. Every time I convince myself, get a Chicago dag or burger or at least a mixed beef and sausage, but inevitably beef with hot peppers is what spills out of my mouth as I order. I know a 5-star for a chain is a little extreme, but I wouldn't want to clog my arteries any other way......*sigh*

  • Steve O.

It's a shame, because it used to be a good safe bet. Some locations are better than others, but this one is no longer on the "good" list. Prices have gone up, but are still fair if the quality is there. Unfortunately, it isn't. The signature beef is a disgrace compared to what is was a few years ago, much less "real" chicago beef stands. I think they have brainwashed people into thinking it is better than it actually is at this point, and they are in danger of becoming a tourist trap like some of the deep dish pizza places have become, ignoring the quality and attention to detail that made them popular to begin with. The most recent visit was thru the drive thru, and our order was botched. When I returned to get my missing items, I was given food that was so under cooked it was inedible. The visit before that I was informed that they were out of jumbo hot dogs and grilled chicken, and this was at 11:45 on a sunday, not the end of a day. I realize my expectations for a fast food place shouldn't be sky high, but just get orders right and you have won half of the battle.

I was up visiting my folks that live in st Charles and they brought me to this place raving about the hotdogs. I had been there once before when visiting but I didn't remember it too well. It was a lot slower traffic wise than I remember before and I was able to get a better look at the menu. I of course got a chili topped hot dog which was very tasty. My dad got a Italian beef sandwich to slip with me, I had never had an Italian beef sandwich before and I found a new favorite food in the portions version of it. The food was prepared in a timely manner and the restaurant was clean and well organized. I remember though that during e busier times it was very hectic and hard to find a seat.

I know portillo's is a chain but this location is my favorite!! First the food is delicious and always perfectly prepared whether you get a salad, burger or shake. Second, the service is great and fast. Lastly, the space is decorated awesome. The restaurant is huge you you never have worry about seating.

It's Portillo's you should always know what to expect when coming here. I love their Chopped salads, hot dogs, cheese fries, and the list goes on never had bad food from Portillo's this one in particular only gets 4 stars because their parking lot is ridiculously small and always jammed packed if that could ever get fixed it would be 5 stars...

I pretty much eat here every week after school, vball, or whatever. Everything is amazing. You won't have a bad meal here unless you order the tamales. They are the only bad thing on the menu. Everyone gets their portillos differently. I go with a dipped mozzarella beef sandwich, cheese fries, and a hot dog with mustard and grilled onions. I don't think I've ever had a better meal than that.
