I don't understand the bad reviews. Has the restaurant changed hands? I spent a couple of days in Wallace and thought this was the best restaurant there for dinner. Granted the servers were truly incompetent, but they got the food to us eventually and it was really great. I had pulled pork and ribs and thought they were wonderful. My husband got brisket and liked it a lot. (The sazerac was a little bizarre, but what did I expect in the wilds of Idaho?)

Alright, but nothing to write home about. Potential is there, but will they grasp it?

Stopped here on a cross-country trip. Decent food though a little pricey for the amount you get. Our waitress was good for a while but got distracted by the time we were done and it took us 5 minutes to get our check after we asked for it even though business was slow at the moment. The building does not have AC so if you can't take the heat then skip it for lunch.

We ate there once but will not repeat the mistake. Food was not good, the place was too hot (no air conditioning) and the server's attitude was "I can hardly be bothered with you, I need to talk to my friends." Skip this place.

Pretty good. Service was fine and fast, so I wasn't sure abt other reviews. The Huckleberry margarita was excellent. Great old building with lots of character. Prices a bit high but understandable for being in a small town and not getting much traffic. Ribs were delish, Mac and cheese good!

Well, what can I say about this place! Surly inattentive bar staff; unappreciative owner, long waits for food and the cherry on top - being called an a$&hole - by a bar staff member when I inquired as to where my long lost order had been placed! Needless to say, a tip was not in her future - no matter what type of blighted future may be in store for her! Ah, the food .. Pretty good BBQ actually .. Now if the owner would only make amends to correct the first part of this review!

Must be the off-season. We were the only ones there at 5:30pm on a Thursday night. The BBQ brisket sandwich was dry and lacking flavor. The baked beans were great with terrific flavor - but the cup is small and there are no spoons, only forks to somehow get them out. The Mac-N-Cheese was rubbery and just ... well ... I've had better. The place was cold - even sitting by the fireplace. NO credit or debit cards!!!

Heather was our server and she was very kind. She was bubbly and took our order correctly. The food was tasty, but the salmon was a little over cooked. The chilled drunken shrimp was good and the salad that came with the salmon was great - it was fresh! We tried the huckleberry cheesecake - it was light and fluffy and not too sweet which was great! Overall the meal was good and the service by Heather was good! They only take cash or check and no credit card!

Food was a bit overpriced and the service was slooooow, but I'll throw up four stars because the smoked wings were pretty delicious, as was the sampler of meats with the spicy BBQ sauce. They only take cash, which is a bit annoying considering they've got to be the most expensive place in town. As we were walking out, some stranger (a local I'm guessing) yelled to us "next time, go to the Goat!" So I'm thinking they must not have great rep with the locals. I would recommend coming for the wings though, they were really good. And if you're driving by on the highway looking for a place to stop for food, like we were, Wallace is a pretty amazing little town with great food.

I got lucky! Everyone seems to have issues with spotty service and lengthy wait times. I did not. The trick is to wander into the CASH ONLY hole in the wall in glorious Wallace Idaho around 1:00pm during a weekday--there's no one besides the server inside :) Wife and I split the BBQ sampler and the son picked the quesadilla kids meal. We had a side of BBQ a beans to taste. Our BBQ a sampler came with 4 pork ribs, few slices smoked brisket, andouille sausage and a handful of shredded/pulled pork. The ribs stood out due to their mouth-feel. The meat was moist inside and had a good chew to them along with some crunchy bits from being grilled after smoked. Great example of pork ribs, they have two sauces for dipping which have vinegar bases which I don't care for. Brisket was tender, thick slices but bland in the flavor department. I couldn't get much beefy taste or smoked flavor--compared to other local options in CDA area this would be considered average for smoked brisket. The andouille was amazingly tasty. Had a good amount of greasy tenderness with lots of heat! The spice profile was nice and strong especially when eaten after trying the brisket. The pulled pork was ok, cooked to oblivion which is the one thing you can do to make pork too stringy which I dont care for. The flavor was decent. BBQ a beans have great BBQ a spicy flavor, looks like beans could have been from the can and then worked on--I prefer to have a handful of different bean styles for texture sake this was great tasting but a little unadventurous in my feeble mind. Service was good, drinks were cold and food was hot. Overall: 4 on the 0-5 scale

Help was friendly. Service was fast. Pulled pork was lacking in flavor. Tried two of the sauces and salt to give it some flavor.

I thought the ribs were very good. I also had pulled pork. It was good and moist. My husband said his brisket was dry. The mac and cheese isn't any good. Beans and cole slaw ok. Waitress was attentive. I guess i am getting old. I don't really think short shorts and a tank top that shows tattoos are appropriate apparel for a waitress.

Warning signs were there. Old and worn look inside and stifling hot. Outside was much cooler. Staff looked unkempt. Young lady who served us was totally disinterested. She was displaced by a more attentive older lady who was at least trying hard. Food was expensive. We should have walked after all the warning signs. Read yelp later and should have read before. Food was average and coleslaw was a strange clump of vegetables. Sauces were identified as hot and mild by badly applied black or green insulation tape on bottles. There are much better choices to be had in Wallace. Just look to the right and left over the road.

Stopped by the Smokehouse to find it closed. Owner agreed to fix us a couple of pulled pork sandwiches to go. Let me just say, ITS THE BEST PULLED PORK IVE EVER HAD! This will be a must stop whenever we are near Wallace, Idaho!

My wife and stopped in here to grab something to drink and some dessert after spending the day in Kellogg and Wallace. To begin with, it was hotter than hell in there. No air conditioning running but that wouldn't have been necessary if they'd done more than just prop the front door open. They could have cracked the windows to ventilate the place but that would have required them taking down their neon signs, heaven forbid. They had one fan going that I could see and it was pointed straight at the bar, cooling down the workers. Who needs to be comfortable when they eat right? I mean, we're only the source of their paychecks. Our waitress was polite but not very quick. I counted 7 people working the front and 5 of the 15 or so tables had people seated at them. Yet it still took 10-15 minutes to bring us a couple slices of pie. While eating the pie, we got to listen to an older gentleman, I'm assuming the owner, getting stern with his staff. Very unprofessional. Finally, after we woofed down the pie so we could get the hell out of there, we got our check and I attempted to hand the waitress my visa only to be told "Cash or check only." Even the hippie selling home made soap at the farmer's market can take my credit card using that little white square on her iPhone. I didn't get a chance to try the food here and I probably never will since I don't plan on returning any time soon.

Delicious food! Would definitely recommend:) the service was great, the staff was very friendly! Fairly priced too! Only issue was they put seasoning on the pickles and chips without telling you and it was to spicy for me to eat.

Be warned that if you give a review of this establishment that the owner doesn't agree with, she will send harassing messages to you calling you a liar and a fake reviewer. Horrible waste of time. The smell pulls you in, that's the only good part. The food was overpriced and far from southern. The po boy was just an andouille on a ciabatta roll. I'm from the south and know Q, and this wasn't, but I reckon it works for the tourists.

Why, why, OH WHY, don't i listen to Yelp? Seriously, all the warning signs were there but we didn't listen. It almost ruined our visit to Wallace. It left a bad taste in our mouths, both figuratively and literally. The food was really pricey for what you get but that wasn't the worst part. The worst part was the over priced food was terrible. Absolutely terrible. One major hang up was the ribs. You know that skin on the under side of ribs that you see the chefs remove before cooking, well, they didn't. Not to mention the ribs tasted bad. Another dish the rice was not cooked, the buffalo burger was really dry, the pulled pork was barely edible...the list goes on. The service was good but the food was not. By the way, the prices they list on their web site were waaay off. The menus in the restaurant had new prices handwritten on there and they were a lot higher. Learn from our mistake, stay away.

This town was gorgeous, and this restaurant looked amazing. They have a smoker outside slow cooking the meats which was what brought us in. It smelt Sooooo good. Unfortunately that's all that was good here. The food wasn't disgusting, but it wasn't good either. The portions are ridiculously small (our whole meal fit in a small red plastic basket) we ordered ribs and the drunken shrimp. the ribs were decent. The shrimp tasted like shrimp cocktail. The sides were terrible (had the potato salad and coleslaw.) Place has no AC which could have been overlooked if we were distracted by the food in a good way. Stay away from this restaurant, We certainly will

A group of 4 had lunch here once after a week of hiking in the panhandle. We arrived famished and had been looking forward to eating here all week. Two in the party had pulled pork sandwiches and found them to be tasty, well prepared and reasonably portioned. Two others had the trifecta (I've forgotten the menu name) of pulled pork, brisket, and ribs. Again, the pulled pork was good though a little moist for my taste. I suspect that it had been steamed to rewarm. The brisket had good flavor but most of mine was improperly sliced resulting in long, tough meat fibers. Brisket should always be sliced across the grain. The ribs were just barely good. The problem was the meat itself. The rib section was butchered extremely thinly. The product was moist, well smoked and seasoned, but there really wasn't much there. The sides, other than the potato salad, were a disappointment. Many of the sides are Cajun-inspired. Two in our party live in New Orleans and the other two have lived there in the past so we have considerable experience with the real deal. Red beans and rice? Really? Not. Jambalaya? No. Perhaps Idahoan taste buds are not prepared for the level of spiciness of Cajun food, perhaps getting things like authentic andouille sausage is too difficult. Whatever, these are pale imitations so stick with the basics. Potato salad is pretty good and the cole slaw is OK. On the plus side, the spicy barbecue sauce, vinegar based rather than sticky and sugary, was quite good if not quite 'spicy'. I brought a bottle home. Finally, the beer list is uninspired although we had a locally brewed pale ale that was outstanding. Still, a larger selection would be appropriate for a smokehouse. All in all the place is OK. There are better restaurants in Wallace. The Fainting Goat leaps immediately to mind. But this is it if you want barbecue and, if you go in with relaxed expectations, you can have a pleasant meal.

Great 'Q! (Had the Carolina pulled pork.) Portions are a bit modest in size-but my waistline actually appreciates that. Service is great and I love the historic vibe. P.s. The Andouille Po' Boy rocks!

We stopped in over memorial day. We intended to order dinner but your prices are way to high. We ordered two beers and two soda's and the bill was almost fifteen dollars. We understand that things are more expensive today but don't price us out. Kathy B.

Our family of four didn't find this place as bad as others did. Beware the prices for sure but we split a 3/4 rack of ribs for $25 and the kids each had $7 meals (sandwich and kids menu item) . The BBQ itself was dry but with a rich flavor (think closer to beef jerky spiced) and the sauce on the side was a great complement. The local IPA was excellent and well poured (e.g., all the way to the top). And then there's the surroundings - the smokehouse building itself and town of Wallace are quite charming - quintessential western (at least that's what these easterners thought). We sat outside across from what appeared to be an original Wells Fargo bank building and there were plenty of others like it plus adorable antique and curio shops. Worth a longer stop than dinner anyway. And chances are you'll have a fine meal as well!

The service was awful, took about 20 min just to get our drinks. After we finally ordered off of the partially typed partially scribbled on menu our nachos came out looking very unappetizing. The chicken was in huge clumps and cold. There were bbq baked beans thrown on along with a few pieces of cabbage, and what little cheese was on them was not melted. It was also over priced, especially considering we ate a few chips and quickly asked for the check. Don't waste your time or money here.

Thought the barbecue was great! One of the best restaurants I ate at when I was in Idaho. Had the BBQ sampler. Good stuff! Not so sure about the bad reviews because I thought it was great!

Avoid this place if at all possible. It took 45 min to get our meal and when it arrived it was cold. The waitstaff was inattentive and lacked basic skills. Not worth your time or money!

Fabulous Mac & Cheese. Ate there 2 nights in a row. Had the pulled pork nachos the second night, those were yummy, too. Wait staff was a little hard to get to cash out both nights, but other than that was great.

When I passed Wallace on my way to my new home of Moscow and saw a sign for the "Historic Smokehouse Barbecue," nestled in a gorgeous, small mountain town, I knew I had to try it out. So one day I took my bike on a long ride on the Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes (well worth your time) and went all the way to Wallace for a lunch (not worth it). The food is decent. it's certainly not bad. But when I order a plate of 3 meats and 2 sides for $16, I expect to barely be able to walk out of the door. Instead, I was still hungry afterwards. They cram all the tiny portions into a small plastic basket that reminds me of many fast food joints. The place itself is very cool (architectually and decoration wise, not heat wise, there is no air conditioning) but that certainly doesn't make up for the disappointment in the amount of food you get. Oh, and the ribs were way overdone. The bones pulled right out of the meat and I had to use a fork to eat it. And the waitress was terrible (though the other ones seemed decent enough.) Either way, I will certainly never go out of my way to eat here again, and I encourage you not to do so either.
