The pioneer saloon was top notch from the beginning to the end. They really have got it figured out. The service was absolutely amazing. As soon as we walked in they took our name and told us that it would be about a 30 minute wait. We said Ok and they then had us take a seat in the waiting lobby. While waiting they served us some delicious chips and salsa and water. Once we got seated the server instantly filled our waters and started to take our drink orders. Throughout the whole meal we were thoroughly impressed with the service. At no point during the meal did we think they were slow or not keeping an eye on us. Every meal ordered at our table was delicious. The portions were big and the prices were very reasonable. The grilled shrimp were great and so was the chicken and steak skewer. The decor and ambiance of the restaurant is great. It looks like something you would see in the movie Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. I will be back for sure next time I visit sun valley.

Great place for dinner, awesome western ambiance. I got the beef kebabs with a baked potato, I'd highly recommend it and get it again. The beef was really tender and juicy. My party got various other items (steaks, shrimp, salmon) and they really enjoyed them. I've been coming to Sun Valley for years and don't know why I've never been here, will definitely return next summer.

Coming from Las Vegas, my expectations of good dining is high. This restraunt is great in comparison to most offerings in Sun Valley. GREAT staff, excellent fresh produce, good presentation, a little pricey but it's a steakhouse. In all, I highly recommend this place for dinner in Sun Valley

Definitely a great place to eat at! Prime Rib sandwich was fantastic!!! Customer service was amazing! The rice was eh, but I was too full to care. Chips were a bit stale at the entrance where you wait for your seat. Other then that great place for dinner!

We come up to visit the SNRA every year with my family. We always stop here to have dinner. You won't find a better restaurant in the valley or with better service. The food, service, and drinks are on point. Order the ribs, scallops or prime rib. If you want the ribs you better be there when the bar opens to reserve your seat. The food literally melts in your mouth.

this is my absolute favorite place to eat when we're in sun valley! The drink selection is amazing and if the wait it long they have a waiting area with cocktail tables so you can sit and drink and wait for your name to be called! I love the menu. Steaks of all kind and of course you have to get the Idaho potatoes, it's the size of both of your hands. They are very accommodating with big parties so just come a little early.

Very good, dark and crowded with cowboy and taxidermeed animals in the front bar area. Value is OK, we waited an hour to get in on a Saturday night in August. Not sure I would do that again. Service was good, not great but I would recommend this place once. Now that I've been there I'm not sure I would wait to go back. Busy, noisy and a place locals and tourists seem to flock to. Food was delicious. I'm not a huge eater so I ordered an Idaho potato with the works! DELICIOUS!!!!

Great location and the staff is excellent. Tom greeted me at the bar and made me feel at home. Their steaks are phenomenal. Drinks are awesome and the atmosphere is fun. Little gem and a must stop during your stay in Sun Valley

I love steaks. And I've stopped eating them for "health reasons". so I believe, I'm tough to please. Pioneer saloon lives up to its name. The flame grilled steaks (Filet, NY strip) were amazingly juicy and flavorful. The hallmark Baked potato is a meal in itself. The service is attentive, quick and polite. For a classy place like Sun Valley, the price is absolutely reasonable. Going back!

My wife and I went here when we were at her family place in Idaho. We weren't there during season, so we didn't have the long wait that others talk about. In fact, we walked right in and had a table in 10 minutes. Service was extremely friendly. I was a little disappointed with the size and taste of the Long Island Iced Tea that I got at the bar...but not enough to take off a star. Our steaks were great and less expensive than what I am used to paying at a nice place back in Denver. Atmosphere is fun. I consider it great bang for the buck.

The Jim Spud--crazy. Huge baked potato topped with sour cream, chives, cheese, teriyaki steak and caramelized onions. Not necessarily the most delicious thing I've ever eaten, but I appreciated it's uniqueness. It was so filling, I could only get through half (I ordered as my entree.) As for the wait--yes, it's crazy. We came early, got on the list, and then wandered around town, which worked really well. We were seated as soon as we got back. But just make sure you don't wander too long--if you miss your table, you miss it--so the hostess said!

Absolutely delicious. My whole family didn't say a word because we were so in love with our food. The pork chop with apple chutney was delicious! Definitely something to order if you check this place out. My waiter didn't quite remember some of our requests like refills, though he was very friendly. I'd come here again.

Totally worth the 3 hour wait We were told from everybody we met that we had to eat at the Pioneer Saloon so we went there and were told it was going to be at least a 2.5 hour wait. It ended up being a 3 hour wait and it was so worth the wait. It was such a neat place. We met some nice people while sitting having a drink with other customers. The staff was friendly and the steak was delicious but my absolute favorit part of my meal was the massive baked potato. The baked potato was almost the size of my head and remains the absolute best baked potato I have ever had. If ever given the opportunity, I would gladly wait 3 hours all over again just to have that baked potato.

The Ribeye was on point, there shrimp were some of the best I've had, and a great selection of IPAs what more could a guy ask for!

This is the iconic restaurant for ketchum - the source of fame, shame and infamy of my youth. My old friends have little gold stars routered into the wood bar. My favorite bar tender Phil, he is there, and George the greatest steak epicurean Ketchum's ever known, and Cleo the buffalo head hanging on the wall that i rode for an hour one Halloween night spreading tinsel tinker dust on the patrons below, before falling off my mount. I met my wife here trying to score points throwing peanuts down her front - they have since removed the peanuts. The Pio continued to play an important role in our lives. At the Pio for my bachelor party, realizing after drinking for several hours that i was probably going to be driving us all home, i asked for white russians knowing my friends couldn't afford to keep buying them for me, particularly since i was pouring them between my legs while pretending I was keeping up. The very spot still exists, under Cleo, where i discovered drying white russians evolves into some kind of glue that makes it impossible to separate one's thighs, not to mention one's thighs from the seat. At that same instant, i realized that even if i managed to stand, my shorts would betray to even the most nondiscerning observor an egregious stain that would likely be embellished forever into the local folklore. I made a decision (quite a feat given the circumstances) to order rounds for my friends until they all were past making coherent observations. Since I didn't have my wallet, the bar spotted me, and the restaurant catered our wedding two days later. After a recovery day, four hours in a hot tub and a little salve, I attended, with our guests the reception where everone gnawed on delicious Pio catered sauce soused bbq ribs. I suggest if you do order the ribs, you arrive at the restarant informally attired. Our wedding party looked a little like the set of "Night of the Living Dead" However this is a food and drink review: from what I remember the Pio made an excellent white russian ( my last white russian here was thirty years ago). I am no longer into white russians. The point is that the Pio is a place you go to when you want to live or create a story. You are as likely to see a visiting celebrity here as you are to see your friendly neighborhood cowboy, and everone is treated the same. Local etiquet demands you treat celebs like locals. You can't make phone reservations, tip the seater, or rent out a room. And the food is great. I've lived in Idaho thirty years. I can order a giant Idaho potatoe in New York, or even Paris, but do you think i can find one in Idaho? Nope ..., unless you come to the Pioneer and order the "jim spud." You can order it stuffed with prime rib, butter, bbq sauce, cheese, sour cream, and chives - its not your New York potatoe. Of course the signature dishes are huge slabs of meat, prime rib or steaks, but trout and salmon are available. Portions are large, and come with a fresh salad, baskets of bread, and a nutty tasting rice that complements the meat. The mud pie dessert is for gluttons and kids. The vegetables are crunchy and fresh. I recommend forgoing the vegetables for the mud pie. A vacation to ketchum would not be complete without a visit here. Historical bullet and barb wire displays, old mining photos, early celebs with randy austrian ski instructors, and of course colorful locals - that's the Pio. Did i mention the food is great? And colorful old time locals will almost never turn down an offered drink in exchange for, well, color. It wouldn't be seemly. Tip - rumor has it the most colorful, and thirsty of old timers usually stake the seats immediately under Cleo. Look for the four or five stolen chips baskets and strewn salsa containers, and you will be at the right spot.

I've been coming here since '72 and it never disappoints! If you are looking for a classic meat and potatoes place that is classic Ketchum, this is your place.

Nice welcome. I spoke to some others waiting and the local guy said it was worth it and let me tell you he was right! Loved the food, atmosphere, and great service! Way to go team!

Not bad, Ketchum, not bad. Though not high on my list of places to visit, I did have a positive experience here at Pioneer. Came to Sun Valley for a weekend with the fellas (ima city-slicker, don't judge), found Pioneer. Came hungry, ordered a cowboy ribeye with a jim spud on the side. Other orders to our table included the fresh trout and also the filet mignon with grilled freshwater shrimp. The filet was disappointing and bland, but the cowboy ribeye was seasoned and cooked perfectly. The grilled shrimp was off the hook, definitely a must try. The jim spud was nothing to write home about, so order if you must. Servers were friendly and came around consistently, made sure all our requests were accomodated. Not many choices in Ketchum, but hell i sure do like you Pioneer.

Best steak in town. The mud pie is the best way to end the meal I love to eat here, the food is delicious and worth the wait (reservations are not accepted) I gave it four stars because the servers are always in a hurry to get you out the door which is nice for the people waiting but makes it hard to enjoy a conversation with friends.

The atmosphere is very friendly and the service is great. The wait was a bit long because it was extremely busy but the staff made sure to keep our drinks full and offered chips and salsa while waiting for a table. Prime rib was out of this world and the portions were more than enough. They have a great blackberry cobbler for dessert! Every time I have gone the experience has been awesome. I would recommend this place for sure.

This is the 3rd time we have been here. Each time, excellent food, excellent drinks and a staff who is concerned with the well being of their customers. We bring friends from all over the world to experience the Pioneer Saloon and have never been disappointed..

I was treated to a very special weekend by my boyfriend a few days ago. The only restaurant he really, really wanted to go to was the Pioneer. We tried to get in on Friday, but the wait was going to be long and since they don't take reservations, we were too hungry to stick around. We went to the Sawtooth and had a wonderful meal. The next day we tried the Pioneer again, arriving a little earlier this time, 6:00 pm. There were less people standing around waiting, but we were told the wait was even longer @ 1.5 hour. We decided to stay because we found a place at the bar to wait. Our bartender, Courtney, was fantastic! The hostess told us someone would come find us when our table was ready. Lucky for us (I thought) our space at the bar was within a few feet of the man who apparently was the "floor manager" was working his magic. HOWEVER, it didn't seem so magical after 2 hours had passed and I started paying attention to people being seated who I knew arrived after us. When the "manager" gave a thumbs up and a wink and then seated a character (his choice in attire really set him apart from the crowd), I walked over to check our status. He knew he was busted and after a few short excuses, said the next table was ours. So, after a total of 2 hours and 25 minutes, we were seated and had dinner. The food was good, but not 2 + hours of good. It was expensive, but what isn't in Ketchum? I won't go back. I'm sure there were too many people in that building who could be safely evacuated in case of an emergency (exits are where?), and if this manager supplements his income by sliding regulars by unsuspecting newbys, they sure don't want my business.

I can understand why this place gets so many good reviews. The food is delicious. We were seated right away in the basement. The room was a bit cold with the AC on full blast. I wasn't incredibly hungry, so I ordered an appetizer of smoked trout and brie. Delicious! I am not a fan of brie at all, but the fermented fromage and the salty smokey fish just worked, even with the addition of the grape in a single bite. I was able to sample a blackened rainbow trout on a special, farm raised, but cooked perfectly and flavourful. My sister had ordered a buffalo burger, which was lean and also deliciously cooked.

Definitely worth the wait! We go every year and are never disappointed. The food is so good, and it has a great bar to grab a drink and snack if there is a wait. Had the shrimp for the first time there and I wasn't disappointed. And the baked potato - Wow! A must if you are in Sun Valley!

The cowboy ambiance is 4 stars until it gets so crowded you can't even get out of the place much less see where you're at. Rushed service and we ate at 5pm. Food was burnt, but not even cooked. I ordered the filet with grilled veggies and a potato. The quality of the meat was poor. As a rancher's granddaughter, I love a good steak. You won't find one here. The portion sizes were huge but unless you have a stomach of steel and no tastebuds, come here for a beer (they do have a gluten free beer) and eat somewhere else!! Caution if you're gluten free. There are better places in town!!

This is probably the tenth time I have visited the Pioneer Saloon. Every time we visit, I seem to enjoy it for a different reason. The ambiance and local seen at the bar plus the best cocktails make it worth a trip even if you are not eating. The host always greets you and you will usually have to put your name on the list for a table, but have no fear, this is part of the joy of the Pioneer. We love to come when we aren't starving so we can enjoy our favorite PIO cocktail pre dinner. I am not doing a lot of sugar right now, so the bartender whipped me up a skinny marg with ample Sauza Hornitos, fresh lime and agave. It was perfect. My husband had a regular marg, and loved his too. The bartenders are super chatty and fun to hang out with. Games were on so we got to watch some football-bonus. Dinner is always fun. We typically end up enjoying conversation with people seated around us because it is cozy and such a friendly atmosphere (the drinks don't hurt either). Service was great. We love the wine list. Food is good depending on your expectation. Steaks are great, grilled veggies are delish. This time I stepped out of my box (not always a great idea), and ordered the sea bass instead of my usual filet. I enjoyed it, but the quality was not wowing in any way. I will definitely get my usual next time. My husband and I split a baked potato (you have to do potato in Idaho or they may actually kick you out) because it was huge. The dinner salad is extremely basic but good-think old school steak house nothing fancy. We love the PIO because we come with the right expectations for fun, great drinks, good conversations, and old school basic steak house fare. I recommend this place to anyone visiting Sun Valley because it is a true staple from the decor, the friendly staff, down to the delicious cuts. Enjoy!!!

Great service - we were offered a drink as soon as we walked in, and got a table right away. Cool old saloon style atmosphere, but tables are pretty close together. Steamed artichoke was great! Smoked trout with warm brie appetizer very disappointing. A slab of cold trout, a wedge of cold brie with some stoned wheat thin crackers tossed on a plate. What about the "warm" part? NOT worth the price. They were out of many different items, including prime rib and ribs. We all had rib eye steaks, which were quite good. Accompanying vegetables were cold. Two people ordered the potatoes and loved them. We got a mud pie to go and it was excellent. Overall, not bad, but not sure it was worth the price. Steaks were $29 - puts them at the high end of "moderate rating." Bill with tip for four was over $250.

Great steaks at great prices in a great atmosphere. It was our favorite place we ate at while in Sun Valley during a ski trip. My friends loved the ribeye, but I was partial to the filet. Only problem is that we had to put our name in, go back to our cabin, then come back 3 hours later and our table was still not ready. That being said, it was worth the wait. Wine list however, was just ok, pretty much only had US wines with no other options - our steaks would've paired wonderfully with a Northern Rhone Syrah or firm Barolo. But I understand, we were in a very US-centric place, so when in Rome...

When you are on an extended Road Trip you really enjoy finding a nice meal, drinks, and new friends away from home. Last night at the Pioneer Saloon, I had a really great Classic Bar dinner. The menu is to the point and wonderful. Absorb the sides, an Awesome Baked Potato, and dessert options. Great Beers on tap, Wine, and mixed drinks. The Bartenders are classic instant friends, smart about the menu and their job. The Pioneer Saloon can be considered an A-1 go-to destination, another great reason to enjoy Idaho.

Wow! It was amazing! First of all the rumors are true it gets extremely crowded and the wait is long. They don't have reservations so you have to hang around the narrow bar until you get seated, but the energy is amazing. Time flies by. Once we got seated we had shrimp, steak, the Idaho potato, veggies, brie and trout, and the artichoke. We started with the brie and trout. It came with crackers and the trout I believe was marinated. You would never think putting those together works, but it did. The artichoke on the other hand was the only thing I wouldn't order again. It was tasteless and came with a heavy sauce that didn't help it one bit. The shrimp was to die for. It was soft and buttery. I got a half a portion which was only three, but I wish I got more! I also ordered the potato with chives and sour cream. I'm not a big fan of sour cream, but the potato hit the spot. Everyone else had the steak and the filet, which they said was one of the best pieces of meat they have had in a long time. I have also tried the trout and veggies which would have been my next pick. Can't wait to come again! mmmmmm

This place delivers exactly as promised: steak house with a side of potato. My filet was cooked perfectly (medium), and the dinner salad was very good. The grilled veggies on the side were nice also. Good wine list. I was somewhat underwhelmed by the lack of flavor in the steak, as was my husband, who had the prime rib.

Got into town around nine Friday night. Nice waitress meet us at the door. Said the wait for a table was short offered us drinks while we waited. Seems she then completely forgot about us. Waited 30 to 40 minutes while she served people sitting on both sides of us. Asked another waitress for an eta on a table and promptly got seated. Salad and bread was good although we were pretty hungry by then. Ordered the sirloin and giant shrimp. Sirloin was a little dry shrimp was good. Would I recommend this to friends nope. Would I go back again? Not likely.

Came here for dinner with a large group -- we all thoroughly enjoyed our meals and thought the service was great! For the price, you get a great deal of food. I had the burger which was delicious. My husband had the famous "Jim Spud" and thought it tasted great/was worth the try! Next time we're in Ketchum, we'll definitely return.

Very nice manager or owner that was very informative and gave us a tour of the kitchen and how fresh everything is!!! Was very knowledgeable about the area and the food looked was amazing!!! Stop by and enjoy a relaxing evening in this rustic historic looking place!!

One of the best restaurants in Ketchum. I've been coming up here for many summers and this place is always packed for a reason. Sure, you have to wait, but I think it's always worth the wait. I think as far as steak places go, this place is a bargain. I am always a fan of the NY strip, I know many people love the Jim Spud, it's a ton of food, and very good. The wine list is solid, even though I would prefer to see a few more French bottles on the list, the mud pie is a can't miss!!

Got here at 6:30, was told a 45 min wait, seated at 8:00. So an actual hour and a half wait. Then the server didn't come to the table for 10 min. Literally writing the review as I sit here and wait. Will update if the food is worth the crazy long wait on a Wednesday night. Literally typing as I sit here starving. Oh and apparently if you are old, rich and white you get seated ASAP.

husband loved this place. he wanted to come back again but i cant take much more than one night of lots of red meat. this place is super busy and bustling. we had to wait 15-20 minutes for our table for 2 on a friday night. i couldnt cross my legs at the table since the chair was too high/the table too short. but i guess this isnt a leg crossing kind of place. it was so lively and bustling that i didnt have time to fixateon all the taxidermy hanging from the walls. started with some warm bread. then we shared the prime rib with idaho baked potatoe and grilled shrimp and scallops with grilled veggies. the entrees came with salads.the grilled shrimp was delicious just as the man who walked us to our table said! he was super friendly and as we passed by the kitchen he pointed out things they had on the menu. the scallops were just ok but i loved the shrimp. the prime rib was also delicious. they grill it/sear it on one side so at first we thought they brought us the wrong thing. the meat was perfectly cooked and fatty and flavorful service was friendly. i kept wondering how they walk around outside in the cold in those mini denim skirts. they must change ...

Two words. Just go. If you are looking for a great steak or prime rib in a great mountain town restaurant then this your place. We went early around 5:00 pm on a Saturday night and got right in for a table for 2. Other bigger groups had waits. By the time we left at 6:30 the place was jammed. My prime rib was super and my wife's filet mignon was cooked perfectly and was tasty. We split a baked potato and that was a good call. Our server was efficient and kept a perfect pace.

We keep coming back to Pioneer Saloon. It may be expensive and not take reservations, but the staff is super friendly and the steaks are perfectly prepared. Plus, there is an extensive wine list to complement the meal.

  • Michael V.

It looks like a tourist trap when you walk in and it is usually packed with people. The wait is apparently ALWAYS long, but there are waitresses who get you drinks while you wait and soak up the faux cowboy atmosphere. I was very pleased with the meal. The salad could use a little dressing up, since it's just a basic iceberg lettuce afterthought, but the steaks are really high quality and super tasty. The ribs must be spectacular, as they sell out of them fast, and they were sold out the night we were there at 7:00PM.

  • Danielle S.

Love the prime rib (med rare) and Jim spud (loaded baked potato) bring a friend and split a meal. Huge portions and very tasty!!!!! A meat and potato lovers dream come true! The trout and Brie cheese is among on of my favorites. This is the place to be on Friday nights after skiing Arrive early as the wait list gets long and they do not take reservations!!!!! Street Parking is the only option unless you take the bus.

I have been coming here since 1980. Its hard to stay in this town as a classic place to eat, but this is it. Like that one place where people will ask you...when you went to Sun Valley, did you eat at the Pio? Well, expect a long wait, a great meal, and loads of history when you eat here. The bus leaves at 20 minutes after and 10 minutes to the hour right outside the front door. Thats great to know. We blew it and missed it. After 9, its every hour. Doesnt help me at 8:55...my bad. So we chatted with the owner (I think) and talked old Sun Valley restaurants. What a nice man. Go to the Pio.

This is a steak house. If you have a steak special, at a steak house, and you cant get it cooked properly after two tries, it's probably not a great steak house. For food our group had three baked potatoes and a 25oz prime rib special. The potatoes were good but nothing mind blowing, they are baked potatoes. As for the prime rib it seems it was not allowed to rest, as well as it was significantly undercooked. When I mean undercooked, when asked for medium rare the steak was raw to uneatable in the middle. The server offered to fix the steak by putting it back on the grill jokingly stating that 'its a big steak, its hard to cook'. After returning with the steak the most raw side was now seared but still extremely raw 1/4" in. I will keep looking for a good steak in Sun Valley.

Little disappointing for the price. No kids menu options given it is a full menu dinner establishment.

Stopped in for a drink and stayed for dinner. Very cozy western atmosphere. We were here in the summer so things were a bit quiet but still a great place to go for a lively atmosphere. Drink were great, food was great! No shortage of people there to wait on you as well. I had the steak kabob and the fella had the trout special, both we're fantastic! I see why this place gets great reviews.

If there is a restaurant that is Sun Valley, it is the Pioneer. This is THE locals hangout. I've been eating here for 30 years; it is a must stop whenever I'm in town. They feature very good steaks and prime rib, with a few chicken and fish dishes on the menu, all at affordable prices, and friendly staff. The Pio has great cowboy decor, with moose, deer, elk, fish, guns, and wonderful cowboy photos and pictures covering the walls. My favorite photo is in the bar area: a calf-roping rodeo cowboy, half way off his horse with the tie-down rope in his mouth and his lasso about to close around the calf's neck as his horse skids to a stop. Check it out. They do not take reservations and it is always crowded, so a wait of 30 to 60 minutes is the norm. But the very large bar area is alive with people, often shoulder to shoulder, and friendly, with chips and drinks if you want them. So waiting is part of the charm. My only complaint - dinners come with rice. If you want an Idaho baked potato it is slightly extra (and gigantic - split one with a fellow diner).

It's hard to find somebody that doesn't like the Pioneer, or the "Pio" as the locals call it. Every trip I make to Sun Valley is not complete unless I spend "several" evenings at the Pio. Sure I can come up with something to whine about,.. like : 1) It gets crowded on the weekends so you have to wait...and wait.. 2) It's a little noisy so you need to yell at times 3) If you wonna sit in the regular restaurant instead of the bar area, you might get stuck in the "dungeon" (basement) or some other room packed like sardines...but it's a ski town what'ya expect ? Let's talk about food : 1) Prime rib: best I've had, and HUGE ! You can also get the prime rib sandwich, a little smaller but just as good and much cheaper 2) The Jim spud : a huge Idaho potato with steak chunks and all the other goodies, a meal in itself and as big as a football...... 3) Buffalo burger: tasty ! Can't get enough ! 4) Rainbow trout: how fresh ? Probably from some stream near by 5) Bartender: nicest guy in the world, remembers my name ( I can never remember names ) Always fun , never boring, great atmosphere and lots of eye candy.... I'll be going back to Sun Valley in about a month for a ski trip with the "gang"....and where do you think we're going as soon as we unpack ?.. AT THE PIO BABY !

Prime rib! Need I say more? The Pioneer Saloon is a Ketchum classic. Nothing too fancy, lots of rustic charm, and good, hearty portions abound. The look, feel, and beef quality make it the type of place you wouldn't be surprised to see on a Travel Channel show like Ultimate Steakhouses. You really only need to make one decision: what cut of meat you want, and they'll take care of the rest. Oh, and don't forget to add a side potato to make sure you get some carbs on top of that protein - after all you've probably been skiing or hiking all day. The side salad and bread is nice, and what it boils down to is a classic American meal with some tasty meat cooked the way you want it. The servers are always friendly and so are most of the other patrons sipping away in the bar waiting to be seated. Great place for parties of all sizes looking for some delicious beef!

This restaurant was recommended to us by our hotel and boy were they right. It's tight quarters but well worth it. They have a great waiting area( due to being so popular) but they have chips and salsa to tie you over till your table is ready and servers to provide drinks to that area. The menu might seem a little pricey at first but not after you receive your meal with the perfectly prepared food and generous portions. We're hearty eaters and we could not finish the portions. We ate there two nights in a row and both were perfect with the food and service. The manager must have seen hundreds of guests on the busy night before but recognized us the next night and thanked us for returning. Great attention to detail and a symbol of pride in his management style. The steaks are amazing as well as everything else and highly recommend as a must visit restaurant when in Sun Valley, ID.

Yes, the wait can be long, but the food is great. The place has an authentic Western feel and the steaks are large and delicious. Of all the places my wife and I ate at while visiting Sun Valley, this was our favorite and the only one we went to twice. We'll be back!

Was in town on a weekday and was looking for a steak. This place seems to have favorable rating, so I gave it a shot. Traveling solo, I sat and dined at the bar. It is both a bar and a restaurant. Beef in all its variety is the mainstay. This place is crowed and loud. The food is pretty good. One complaint and it was reflected in my tip, the bartender who was my waiter did not keep my soda glass full, I had to wait too long between refills as the glass was not for soda rather mixed drinks.

Best baby back ribs so go early or they may sell out! The prime rib is also good. Yes, there is usually a long wait...but worth it. Excellent staff and mgt. Consistently good service and yummy food. Hits the spot after a day of skiing. :-)

This place is a must if you visit Sun Valley. Really cool vibe - it feels authentic and inviting. Big booths are super comfortable while you chill out or wait for your dinner table. They also have free, crispy, light tortilla chips and salsa while you wait. Really good people watching.

Let me start by saying as a pilot, I travel a lot and have the opportunity to eat at places all over the country. This year the week before Christmas, I was in Ketchum for several days. I discovered this place my second night there and was blown away!! I ordered the filet with grilled onions and it was unbelievable. Probably in the top five of steaks I've had and coming from Texas, I get to try a ton. You get to order a baked potato or rice to go with your steak. You can't go wrong with either. I know this because I returned again before I left. My advice is even if there is a wait, stick it out! it is worth it!! I will definitely be returning on future trips.

Man I love the Pioneer. I lived in Ketchum in the mid 80's and the Pioneer was the place you wanted to go after pay day. I saw one newspaper review list this as the cheap eats place in Sun Valley. While it isn't expensive, to a ski bum in the 80's dining here was a luxury. Normally I could have been seen walking around Atkinson's with a whole chicken in my basket waiting for 7:00 pm to roll around. That's when chickens became 50% off. But I digress.... Slavey's has long ago disappeared and the building now has a place that has white table cloths, serves foie gras...and has no customers..... what a shame. But a few doors up, my Pioneer Saloon is still there and has only gotten better with age. Thank God. I was on a fishing trip spending 3 nights in town and gravitated to the "Pio" my first night. I was greeted like a long lost friend by what I believe was the owner and the hostess could have not been more pleasant. I swear to God they both made me genuinely feel like they were glad that *I* was there. My waitress was just awesome. Again, treating me like a long lost friend. I ordered a Moscow mule and she came right back and said that they didn't have Ginger Beer and couldn't make one. Kudos to the bartender, how many of them try to make it with Ginger Ale when they don't have Ginger Beer. She really acted like she cared that I got what I wanted and I eventually told her to surprise me. She brought some concoction from the bartender that I "should like if I like Moscow Mules". She said that I could get something else if I didn't like it. She waited, I confirmed I like it, then she went on her way. Throughout the meal she was ALWAYS there anticipating what I needed. Note to the waitress training schools out there (I know there is no such thing, but go with me), the way she treated me and took care of my order was AWESOME!!. The owner also empowered her to make whatever I needed right with my drinks and meal. THAT is how you make people love a restaurant, leave big tips and come back again and again. I had to go with the prime rib. Fantastic. Awesome. Fabulous. I had an end cut that was crusted which is my favorite. I can't tell you how awesome it was. I'd write more but I'd just be using a thesaurus to find more words like Fantastic, Awesome and Fabulous. The next night in town, my last, I walked the streets looking at the menus in the windows. Walked around for maybe half an hour..... I ended up back at the Pioneer Saloon, and had, you guessed it, another end cut of prime rib. Something so perfect, I knew I would be kicking myself later if I didn't have it again while I had the chance. I ate at the bar this time and the service from the bartender was just as good as the waitress the night before. Kudos to the owner for making sure excellent service is consistent. Go to the Pioneer Saloon when you go to Sun Valley....then go again...then...

They are wildly popular for good reason. Noisy and crowded. But you get free chips & salsa while you wait. We had the baby back ribs and prime rib - both perfectly prepared and very tasty. The brie & smoked trout appetizer was also great - large portions on everything. Our waitress was attentive and responsive, in spite of being busy. When she dropped one of our leftover containers, she insisted on replacing a partial leftover steak that was destined for our dogs with a whole new steak that will now be my lunch tomorrow. Gotta love that kind of service!

We stopped in here on our trip to Sun Valley for a drink after dinner. WOW! What a cool place. The atmosphere is exactly what I would suspect for a saloon in Sun Valley. We couldn't get over how big the animal heads on the walls are! This place is a must-see!

Why are they closed memorial day weekend? There's no sign on the door, just a piece of tape blocking the entrance. It's obviously a popular place because many people keep walking by and looking disappointed.

One word: YUM! 1/2 Hour wait....well worth it. We ate with kids, so we hung outside while waiting, but had they not been with us, the bar was lively and fun! Food was so darn good! Sure it is the simple stuff of old time steakhouses...not a Mortons type, but the Filet...OMG. YUM! Blue cheese butter on top was an awesome plus. ( You are offered, peppercorn sauce, blue cheese butter or something equally as good) My kids split a full rack of babyback ribs, and my hubby got the Ketchum cut Prime rib. (The smallest size, which was pretty darn huge) All orders came with baked potatoes, and they were by far the best baked potatoes we have had. ***Sure sure I realize we are in Idaho, but still...a potato is a potato right?*** Drinks were strong, food was excellent, service was awesome! No complaints, overall a great great dining experience. 4 of us ate full meals, My filet had 3 shrimp on the side as well, for 130.00 out the door including strong cocktails. Great buy! No trip to Sun Valley should go by without a visit to the "Pio"

This is the place for every trip to SunValley, Great grilled salmon, their filet mignon is the best baked potatoes and do start with a classic martini...you will only need one after a day of skiing. We also like to go early as they take no resi's. Go early have a drink in the large bar area and get in on the first seating.

This place has a great atmosphere and awesome staff. I come here regularly and devour a bowl or two of their chips and salsa with some friendly conversation at the bar area. The dinner is good, but the wait tends to be long and it can get crowded during ski season. "Rock the Pio!" mid week if possible.

When we got to the restaurant, we were told it'd be about 20-30 minutes. We expected a wait, so sat down in the bar area. A waitress came right away and got us some drinks. After about 10 minutes, a table was open and ready for us. We tried the Brie and trout, which was pretty good, but I wouldn't get unless you're starving. Our salads were quick as we'll as our meals. Great experience, a must visit in Ketchum!

Oops. Awkward!! Our party of 4 was seated quickly as we arrived shortly after opening. Since it was Saturday night of "Trailing of the Sheep" weekend, and a sign on the front door advertised LAMB KABOBS, that's just what we ordered. What we received was BEEF. The server argued with us, saying we got lamb. We stood our ground and she walked away. A few minutes later she returned and notified us that we were correct, and the entrees would be subtracted from the bill. Not the greatest customer service.

This is one of the best restaurants in Ketchum. Prompt friendly service and very tender filet mignon cooked to perfection.

  • Cathy A.

Single worst steak I've ever had. Cooked to preference but with zero taste, how do you screw that up? Waitress had the personality of a rock, didn't even greet us. Thank god the filet mignon was only $21 wasn't too painful given the fact that we didn't eat more than 3 bites of it. My mothers salmon was cooked in coconut oil, which was terrible. If your going to cook something in coconut oil you should state so. I cannot for the life of me figure out why people think this a great steakhouse. Save your money and pass on this one, you want a little history stay for a drink and go else where for dinner. And waitress, when you remove your customers plates and their full, maybe you should inquire why and then apologize for the crappy food.

Affectionately called "The Pio" by locals and Sun Valley regulars alike, apparently this really is the place to be. My in-laws, from Eugene, OR, were with us and while we were at the restaurant we bumped in to 2 different groups of people they knew. I guess it's bound to happen in the TINY town of Ketchum :-) The service was good, the decor pretty dark and "saloony" with red lamps everywhere. It was a little difficult to see but the smells that came from the open grill that you walk past to get to the back room made up for it. We got there very early at 5:15 and were lucky enough to be seated right away, within a half hour, the restaurant was filled, the bar full, and the line for a table, crazy long! The half cut prime rib was good, a whopping 16oz thick cut lean piece. The filet mignon was 10oz and really tender. The roast chicken was amazingly juicy and the Jim spud was HUGE. This place is know for giant baked potatoes and for some reason, they were really really good! Also, each entree comes with a dinner salad so the price is pretty good. Despite everyone have something left on their plates, we decided to share a slice of mud pie and the fudge on top made all the difference. Yum.

Great service, great atmosphere and old west decor, and the food was very good. Big portions, we split the smallest prime rib cut, which was more than enough paired with a giant baked potato and salad. We also enjoyed an artichoke appetizer, and learned from our server the proper way to dissect and enjoy it!

I had the sea bass (special) and it was delicious. The salad had a bit too much dressing - that's my only complaint. The mud pie was huge and yummy. Very nice environment too, not just for tourists.

Our steak and rainbow trout were good, though the 'medium' steak was 'medium well'. Meal came with bread, salad, rice and vegetable. The vegetable turned out to be 2 tiny little carrots. Would have upgraded the rice to grilled vegetables had we known they were so stingy on the veggies. The place is very dark and very loud. Not worth the money. I would not eat there again.

We dared to visit 'the Pio' on New Years Eve. After initially gagging at the 2-3 hour proposed wait time (we arrived around 6) we decided to give it go since we had plans for later in the evening and had heard so many good things about the place. We found a small area near the bar that allowed us to get a few drinks and we also ordered their brie and smoked salmon plate to help get us through the time we spent waiting. The staff was friendly and very helpful. We just needed a table of two and as had happened at another restaurant in town we got bumped up the list because other couples had just left instead of waiting--win for us. I had the Pioneer cut prime rib and she had the sirloin burger. Each came with rice and aspargus. Neither one of us got the baked potato as big as your head but I can attest to seeing them and they were enormous. The food was very good but I completely forgot how ridiculously fatty prime rib can be and probably spent more time cutting the fat away than eating my food. It was definitely a great experience and good food but probably a bit overrated and if I could give it 3.5 stars I would.

Not too often will you go to a restaurant with seven guys who travel extensively and eat in a ton of restaurants and uniformly hear such rave reviews of all parts of the menu. Ribs? Awesome. Filet Mignons? Generous cut and perfect medium rare. Fresh local trout special? Our group was tempted to get one to share as dessert. Prime rib? Savory, juicy and perfect. Service was great. The place was packed yet they were always there when we needed something. No hovering...yet magically appeared to help us whenever we needed something. The bar? Relatively tight quarters in here with seating for maybe 40 people around small tables and another 20-30 standing up. Filled to the gills with women from age 30-50. Yes, the elusive high-end trustafarian cougars. Zak would have been in heaven. We sure were.

I was concered about the hype - everyone we spoke to in Sun Valley said "Go to the Pioneer". We thought, ok, let's check it out. Well, they were right. We tried stopping by on a Saturday night (duh) and there was a two hour wait so we decided to go back on Monday after the crowds left and only waited 20 minutes for a table. The service was friendly and quick, and the food was perfect. I had a filet and of course a baked Idaho potato. The meat was cooked precisely and flavorful. It was one of those meals where you wish you could eat more after you're full. I also signed up for their recommended margaritas which packed a punch! :) I think it's worth the hype but plan accordingly if you don't like to wait in line. Go early.

Oh the Pio. It's been my favorite place since I was a kid. Yeah yeah 3 hour wait is never fun but get there at 5:30 and you will be seated right away. If not, sitting in the bar is nice but beware: I always eat too many of the chips and fresh salsa and never finish the "Ketchum Cut" prime rib I vow each time to demolish. Other tips: order the melted blue cheese butter on your steak, it is divine; opt for the veggie kabob as a side if you don't want to gain 1,000.5 calories on the size-of-your-head baked potato.

This is the place to go in the Sun Valley area for outstanding grilled meats. I had the ribeye on my last visit, and it was as good as I've had north of Argentina. Cooked perfectly at medium rare, it was just warm inside with a tremendous crust. Sourdough, a decent dinner salad, and a great big Idaho baker were served with the steak. We also tried the smoked Idaho trout and brie appetizer. This is also highly recommended, but is a big enough serving for four. Be sure to go early, and expect a wait. We got right in with a party of two at 6pm on a winter Saturday, and it seemed that only larger groups were experiencing long waits. You'll wait at the bar, and drinks and appetizers are served there if you're interested.

The Pio is the place we always take visitors. Dependable food and service, and a scene. You have shoulder to shoulder real estate agents, local stars and wanna be starlets at the bar while animal heads stare down from the walls above. You will wait for a table, but have a good time doing it. Relax and enjoy a well mixed drink, appetizers and a jovial crowd. The artichokes can be ordered in the bar until they run out. The meat dishes are excellent, the potato legendary. The trout is loved by many. If you want privacy, quiet and space around your table, this might not be your place. Jump in and enjoy yourself. Have another drink!

We ate on a Thursday night at 7:00pm. We had to wait a little, not that big of a problem as we were able to order drinks from the bar and transfer the tab to our table bill (don't forget to tip at the bar). The ambiance was what we expected, western motif with nostalgic Sun Valley photos. Our waitress knew the dishes well and answered various questions we had. My wife ordered the Jim Spud, a huge Idaho baked potato filled with steak, grilled onions, and cheese. Although this is listed as a side order, it is a full meal. I ordered the Rib Eye steak with grilled vegetables. The steak came as ordered, medium-rare, and the grilled vegetables were fresh and crisp. Both meals were very delicious. Although my wife and I enjoy trying new restaurants while traveling, we would eat here again in the future and bring dinner guests. The gentleman taking my name for a table when we first walked in, addressed me by name an hour later as we exited, nice unexpected touch to details (almost getting them to a 5-star). I didn't give 5-stars because there just wasn't anything exceptional about the meal, the restaurant, the pricing, or the service. All-in-all a good 4-star experience.

What can I say? Truly one of the best meals in town! The food is just so perfect and such a wonderful place to eat! I could eat there every week if I could. Rainbow trout is truly the best! Enjoy everyone, you'll not be sorry for this place.

I was advised to go to the "Pio" as the locals call it for a true Sun Valley experience. I was hoping to drop by to take a look at the menu to find out if it would work for my friends' dietary preferences/constraints. Unfortunately, this place doesn't open until 4 p.m., and dinner isn't served until 5 p.m. They don't take reservations, but there were 14 of us planning on having dinner which is a pretty large group to walk in without a reservation. We called in advance to see what the wait would be like, and they advised us to arrive at around 8 and we could probably get in. A sub-group of us arrived at 7:15 p.m. or so just to check out the scene, and it was PACKED. The entire bar was packed and people were just pouring out on to the sidewalk - does not bode well for our large party. We put our name down, and they told us it would be an hour wait. One of my friends is pregnant and needed to eat immediately, and since we couldn't find a place to sit in the bar area, we went over to Rico's for a snack. I ran over occasionally to just check on our reservation, and they were pretty on target with the estimated wait. They wouldn't seat us until our entire party arrived, so we had a few drinks at the bar. The bar is a cool place and very rustic - lots of hunting and Idaho-related memorabilia on the walls, and cozy places to sit (assuming you can find a place to sit). My friend told us we should ordered the prime rib sandwich without a bun because it's about half the price of the prime rib for the same amount of meat; this advice was so important that it made it into the materials distributed to guests. One of our other guests didn't seem to trust this advice and tried to order the prime rib, but the waitress told gave him the same advice about the prime rib sandwich! The lesson learned is that the prime rib sandwich (no bun) is the way to go! If you're going to have prime rib.... I decided to get the petite filet; I can't explain this decision except that I had already started to talk about the House of Prime Rib to people, and I couldn't bear to betray HOPR by having prime rib at another place. I had the petite filet which was very petite but the perfect amount of food; the filet was cooked perfectly - pink, juicy and moist. I chose to have a baked potato on the side (Idaho potatoes!), and the potato was huge! It was delicious with sour cream and butter (I prefer no chives) - it's not quite like the HOPR baked potato with bacon but it's pretty darn good. For dessert, my friends ordered the mud pie, and they went to town on it. I barely had a bite, but the little bit that I had was good. Definitely a place to check out if you are in Ketchum and like meat! It's on the pricier side, but it's definitely not expensive compared to some of the other restaurants in town. The food is good and the ambiance and service are great.

Not worth the wait, just a standard steakhouse. Not sure what the draw is?!?! Don't waste your time for the 1-2 hour wait. Wait staff was very nice, otherwise, I would give this place rating 1!

  • Rahel K.

Dad said we had to go to the "Pio" while here and I didn't think I could eat any more red meat....but to hell with my diet - I'm on vacation. It is definitely a saloon. Waitresses wear plaid button down shirts, jean mini skirts and cowboy boots. I swear that is what I wore for my first grade school picture. But this is a ski town and this seems very appropriate. Steak was good, wine list was really good; I would put this place worth the hour or two wait in Ketchum...

I am driving to Sun Valley tonight, and seriously all I can think about is pio, pio, pio. It's a 12 hr. drive, there are forest fires, and it'll probably be smokey all around Ketchum. All I can think about is pio, pio, pio. Am I seriously driving this long route through Nevada for prime rib? Yes, I am. I am a New Englander and so my first trip to Idaho I finally understood the term "Old West" and the Pio is the epitome of Old West! What I didn't understand was the term Idaho potato. ohmygod, these things are huge. Even if you're watching your carbs, order one, and you best get all the fixins! It's an experience you will not soon forget. And the steak, the prices!, martinis, and old west vibe just make this place top-notch for this CT girl. If you are ever visiting Sun Valley, get to Ketchum to eat here! Your trip won't be complete without it. You will soon find yourself humming pio, pio, pio. Hint: Get there as soon as it opens because the wait can be excruciating, and they don't take reservations. This is the Old West after all!

A place that has chips and (terrific) salsa on the bar instead of the drab pretzels or peanuts has my heart anytime. It may be 17 degrees outside but I'm ordering a Margarita. We had time to kill because we were waiting for the bus from Boise to bring our loved one into town since the flight couldn't land in Hailey because of fog. Our bartender Jeff recommended the Jim Spud. It says it's an appetizer, but it's nearly a meal for three!

The fish was fresh and tasty, service was quick, and the atmosphere? It was fun. Not Nashville fun (although it did remind me of some of the honky-tonks we have here), but fun nonetheless. I was a little surprised to see so many people in cowboy hats, cowboy boots, and plaid, but after getting over the initial shock, we relaxed to enjoy ourselves in the crowded restaurant. I would definitely return.

The beef ribs are too die for! Okay well what can I say we love this place. Yes you can wait over an hour to get a table when LA and Seattle descend on Ketchum. But the wait is pleasant in a bar with amazing atmosphere. I love the bars old west mountain town decor. Plus they give you chips. Whenever any member of my family is up here we always have to go here at least one time. That being said the beef ribs are out of this world good. I always go early to try and ensure that they haven't run out. This is hands down the best beef / steak place in Blaine County. If you are new to S.V. you have to come here for dinner.

Man, how much do i miss this place? So. Very. Much. When I lived in Ketchum I would go to the Pio at least twice, maybe 3 times a week. Probably didn't to wonders for my cholesterol level but hey, it's worth it. Best prime rib ever, best margaritas, baked potato, and the nicest owners & staff. Since I moved to San Francisco almost 15 years ago, nothing has come close to the feeling of "home" that I felt whenever I went to the Pio. And my advice for you prime rib lovers on a budget and a (slightly) smaller appetite than usual is to order the following. Just say: "I'll have the prime rib sandwich, no set, no bun, one slice!" Heaven.

Fact 1. You are going to Sun Valley (or you are lucky enough to live there). Fact 2. You are going to The Pioneer. No trip to Sun Valley is complete without a trip to the pio (and I would also argue, Vintage). Unless you don't eat red meat there is -no excuse- not to get anything other than prime rib. It's famous for a reason. The Ketchum Cut is all you really need, but who am I to stop any would-be heros from ordering the full cut? Go forth and conquer. As other reviews have made clear the wait can be long. But even when Annie Oakley tells you that you may have to wait 3 hours for a table, it's never really that long. Enjoy the bar. Meet some folks. Enjoy the bar some more. Before you know it you'll be sawing at your own little piece of heaven.

The Poineer! Yeeee-Haw!!! This place is a great spot in town to go if you need to get your beef fix. Vegetarians need not apply. The ribs are great. The prime rib is great. Teh filet is great. The chicken is great. And there's also a short brunette server who works the bar who is - you guessed it - GREAT! The Poineer has a wide selection of flesh to choose from, and it's all cooked to order and tasted fabulous. With wine or beer, it's the place to go. Waiting for a table can take a while - especially in the winter. So be prepared. But the bar is fun, and there's a lot to look at (get it?) Try it out. You'll like it. ------------------S

This is the place to go in Sun Valley for steak. The Ketchum Prime Rib and fillet are outstanding. So is the loaded Baked potato. The place is small, so chances are you will be sitting arms length to another party. The dessert menu is seriously lacking. You may want to make the short trip to rocky mountain chocolate factory, only a few blocks away. A typical steakhouse atmosphere, with a great mountain cabin feel. The service was great. Highly recommended.

Gigantic portions. No reason to order anything but steak. Idaho baked potato w/ all the fixing's is not to be missed. Place gets crowded to be prepared to fade at the bar for up to 45. Why put ribs on the menu if you've been predictably out every night since 1973 ?

MEAT N POTATOES Top touristy saloon/restaurant where the locals eat at too! The prime rib MEAT is their specialty. The massive floury potaotoes are on steroids and are as big as my head (and I'm no pinhead) and served with the works. Salads are humongous and ok if you like generic green salad with carrots and cabbage sprinkled on top. The ribs are superlative but in short demand, since they only serve ribs that came with the prime (if you see what I mean). I'm always too stuffed for dessert, so I can't say. Fully stocked bar which gets crowded inversely proportional to the ski slopes. This is a must when you visit Ketchum.

If you happen to be in the Sun Valley area I couldn't recommend a better place to eat then at the Pioneer Saloon in downtown Ketchum. As you first enter, the atmosphere is very rustic and almost old fashion. It is very dark inside (almost too dark for my taste), and is barely illuminated by red lights. There are also mounted game heads almost everywhere you look. If you don't have the stomach for looking at your food as you eat it then this probably isn't the best place to go! The one and only downside to this restaurant is that they don't take reservations. I have been eating at the pio almost all my life and the longest I've had to wait was 2 hours for a table of three! I would really recommend going early. However, the wait will seem like nothing once you try the food. The thing I love about the Pioneer is that they really know how to perfect what is on the menu. Because the menu is small, you are guaranteed perfection in whatever you decide to order. However, if I were to recommend one thing it would be the prime rib. It is hands down the best I have ever had!! The service is also great. The waiters and waitresses are genuinely nice people who know how to make their customers happy! All in all, go to the Pioneer or you will be seriously missing out!!!

Food was delicious. My petite filet was perfectly cooked and amazingly tender. I have Celiac Disease and the wait staff were knowledgeable and were able to assist me in ordering a great meal that was gluten free. This place definitely deserves it's great reputation. Only took away one star because it was pretty loud and crowded and there's not a lot of room between the tables.

This place has excellent ribs. I don't recall if I've ever gotten anything else here. I haven't been in Ketchum in years, but I've been to this place a bunch of times, I think always for ribs. They're some of the best ribs you can get, and they give you huge portions at a nice price.

Love, Love, Love this place. My absolute favorite and worth every second of waiting, as they don't take reservations. If I only have time to go out to eat once while I'm in town, this is the place. Great bar too!

Ranch dressing measuring stick of excellence defined here. This is not just a spot to enjoy as a tourist, it's a world class meal for serious eaters. Get ready to stuff your food bag.

Wow, I am a bit suprised about all the rave reviews. The food was good, not great, but a solid good. The staff was really great and the place is cool to check out. There was a drunken asshole next to us in the downstairs room and the it would have been better if the manager would have stepped in, but it would have been a hard call for the staff to say anything.

It was very good. Best potato I have ever had, for what it's worth. And awesome prime rib.

Vegetables and steak burned. I was surprised that the both the waitress and the "chef" working the grill sent the food out. Friends normal sized primed rib looked like overcooked roast beef. Very mediocre.

huge steaks, huge potatoes, good whiskey and good taxidermy - has my wife's favorite badger that she's been trying to steal from behind the bar the last two times we've gone
