If you come to Sun Valley and you don't have a stick up your a$$, then you should go to Grumpy's, get a burger, a schooner and kick back with locals. The place is strangely inviting for a locals spot, the bar tenders/ chefs actually say "Hi" and want to help you, no matter how packing the place is. Even if you are from out of town. The crowd rotates every 30 minutes or so, which means if you get a beer and wait a bit, you will find a seat. Now the burgers... the epic bar burger is what you get at Grumpy's. It is not a high brow burger that have become so popular (and I love), it is a bar burger that never, ever disappoints. When you pair this with an ice cold beer from the tap you can't beat it. For this fact, Grumpy's will always be in the top 3 best burgers in Sun Valley!

I've always enjoyed grumpy's and I always try to get there at least once when I visit sun valley. The burgers are great and the beer is cold. The atmosphere is completely different from other eating establishments and I appreciate that. The service can be a little rough at times. The line cooks definitely don't care what the crowd hears during a rush. But take it for what it is. Enjoy the good food and dive bar feel.

  • Richard H.

Yes, the beer was cold and the Shooner was a cool touch... The service was seemingly good for the locals/regulars, but quite poor for this guy and my date... Although the kitchen looked a little scary, I would have tried the burger, but my princess of an date was a little scared so we decided to eat elsewhere... If your looking for a reminder of your local hometown greasy spoon, dark bar, pull a chair up to the bar and act like a local... Don't however wear your finest, and don't bring a date who doesn't appreciate a good 'dive bar'. I will come back to try the food, and see if the service is better sitting at the bar top.

I love coming to Grumpy's, It's one of my favorites!!! No froufrou goo-goo politically correct bs here! It's a great local hangout with a great friendly staff and a fun clientele where you can set back have a beer and a great burger and jus enjoy it all! If you're a prince or princess it's probably not for you. But if you're an average American , you'll love it!!!

Casual burgers and fries, perfect for that I'm too tired to hike today afternoon. Love the back of the staff shirt - "Put your phone down". Thanks for the reminder.

Great to be back at Grumpys. How do you beat a $5.50 schooner and the best burgers in town?

    (5)
  • Mr D.

fabulous atmosphere but let's call a spade a spade here: the burgers taste like frozen crap you get at camp. I'm willing to overlook the terrible burger though since its always crowded and the schooner beers are amazing.

  • Casey D.

Cool Place! Good beers on tap.... And 32oz scooners. Burgers are simple but legit. Very small place so watch for crowds. Good place to wait out a thunderstorm!

  • Al C.

A Ketchum institution, grab a burger, a few schooners and enjoy reading the poetry on the bathroom walls

  • Shelly D.

If you are looking for a cold beer at the local watering hole, this is your place. Staff could have been...er....less grumpy? But otherwise a good time!

  • Jamie W.

Who doesn't love Grumpy's? It's a Ketchum institution. You've got to go there for a schooner of beer after a long mountain bike ride or a day on the slopes. While the menu is very limited, the burgers served in a basket are above average.

  • Janae D.

This is the place to go no matter who you are. There is always a good crowd. Food off the chain. Beers whatever your taste buds desire and you can keep on flowing with the 32 ounce schooners- a must especially in summer time. You can always get a good chuckle out of Pete(owner) along with his great staff. If you havent heard it yet you will hear it at Grumpys. For the amusing side bathroom privileges .. pool and a great selection of music on the jukebox ..always a great experience.

Loved this place 19 years ago and still loved it when we came by on vacation this week...perfectly small, everyone knows who everyone is... Just the kind of place we enjoy. Pete is kinda adorable.. Love the banter of the staff and patrons...it's got great eats.. and the best sized beer you could ask for! It's a must do..

  • Edward K.

Solid, honest tasty burger w pile 'o fries (Idaho)... Skip the hype lines when u in SV... Atmosphere, cold beer, friendly help... And your kid sayin " gotta come back dad"... Yes, son.. We will :)

The staff lives up to the restaurant's name. Not friendly and annoyed if you ask any questions. One of the staff ridiculed me because I ordered a pint of beer instead of a massive quarter gallon goblet. Normally I wouldn't mention that type of thing if it was done in good humor, but the guy was a total prick about it and it compounded the lameness of the other staff members. My advice: stay away.

There's really not much open for lunch in Ketchum and it wouldn't matter. Grumpy's is the only place for lunch! A Fowl Burger and a schooner and you're good to go! Pete is the best, expect some humor and maybe a joke or two at your expense. Make sure you order at the right place at the bar, they won't come to you! And they're not going to bring it to you either. The place is fantastic. Super small, for the most part, everyone knows everyone. Just a great place to get a burger and a beer. Menu is small, which is perfect. Means you're going to get your food quickly. Did I mention Pete is the best!?!?! I might have a little crush...... If you're looking for full service, this is not the place for you. Can't wait to come back!

Magical might be a stretch but who cares this is yelp! I do not even know if folks read my reviews ;) All kidding aside this place is a local burger/grill joint with a great little patio to have beers and greasy food. The folks behind the bar/grill are only looking to make one thing happen and that is to have you enjoy yourself but stay out of their way. I am planning on heading back to Ketchum every summer with the family and this place is going to be on our go to list for every trip.

Keep in mind I wasn't drinking a large chalice of beer (which is the obvious highlight of this venerable establishment) but we found Grumpy's entirely mediocre. The burgers were too done, almost carboney, and not inexpensive. The fries were skinny and unremarkable. The best part about the place was the incredible beer can collection on the walls inside. The wait staff was friendly but the outdoor plastic table was dirty and sticky and had no napkins in the holder. Reviewed July 2011

This is as funky and old school as a tavern can get. They have giant schooner beer mugs and lots on tap. The locals love it here, as do the visitors after a long day on the slopes. It is tucked back so it's a bit tricky to find. I hear Bruce Springstein is a real fan of Grumpy's when he's in town!

    (5)
  • Gordon S.

A Ketchum classic that is a must stop every time we come to town. It's a timeless, funky, kind of dusty, beer and burgers place so set your expectations. But the foulburger is pretty good and they serve about a half gallon of beer in these heavy schooners....be sure to designate a driver!

    (5)
  • Nate S.

Very small, but huge on character and characters. Great burger, great big beer, and ask for the special sauce for your fries and burger. Don't go here for health food, but do go here for good bar food.

home of the super tasty no bull shit burger...and the chicken filet burger is amazing. simple ..tasty...cheap.

There's nothing sweeter than an old building with tons of homemade memoribilia on the walls, burgers off an open flame grill, and a schooner of beer out on the wooden deck with good friends.

  • Lois C.

Had lunch with friends on Labor Day, the best burgers, and the garden burger to die for, fries are great also, tho we didn't have a beer they looked Awesome!!!

Best corn dog and fries in the west. The burgers are great too!! Sit outside in the summer. Great for kids

  • Jason L.

Smoke free. Fantastic burgers and fries...can't beat the 32 oz chalice shaped beers for $5-6. Staff isn't 'Grumpy' but very friendly so long as you don't act like you came in on your jet that afternoon. For newbies, the menu is on the same wall you came in through. So just turn over your shoulder casually and identify your pick. For non-food fun they have a pool table, buck hunter video game, and juke box. Not a lot of standing/sitting room but if you're lucky to find an open booth snag it quick. Definitely recommended.

A SV classic, just like when I was a kid but now can drink rainier beer there!

Grumpy's is the place to stop for lunch when you are in Sun Valley. Great food served in an authentic old school log cabin. The owner, Pete, is the man. Stop in for a schooner and a burger, you will not regret it !!

  • Conner O.

Great place for beer and a great burger. The people that work here are hilarious. Great hometown environment. It's always packed. Good price on beers. Get the schooner! 32 oz.

The food here is moderate...the atmosphere...and that is a word not easily bantered about...is what it is all about...so go...and enjoy the schooners...anything less and you are a wusssssssssss.....

I grew up on this schnazz, and boy oh boy do I miss it! The burgers are awesome obviously, and the fowl burgers are soooooo good it hurts! Fries are stellar, and there is nothing that feels like home like sitting outside of Grumpy's with a schooner and a burger.... none of us are sorry you're open baby!

This is the spot in Sun Valley, but it takes some knowing to find it. After Louie's Pizza, my absolute favorite place. A small log cabin converted into a bar. Beer can collection from around the world diplayed on the walls ...for decoration and insulation. 32 oz. Schooners of beer ( 3 - 4 bucks ) Grumpy burgers ........ If you love burgers this is the place for you. Great skiing, great bar, great people ... .what more can you ask for.. ....... another schooner please.

  • Britta E.

Good place to eat. Fries are yummy and burgers are good. Nothing unbelievably stellar, just a solid burger joint. Hot wings have a good flavor, especially since they are grilled. Could use some extra sauce on the side, though.

    Good burgers, biggg beers!

Yay for $4 32.oz beers! I have been going to Ketchum/Sun Valley every year of my life for 25 years and just discovered this place. Great place for a drink, they have a big patio which is nice in the summer. We didn't have dinner there but got some snacks off of the appetizer menu. The wings were nothing special, not saucy enough for me, but the fries were delicious. Actually the fries weren't that amazing but they were served with a whole bottle of fry sauce and fry sauce will win me over any time. Oh how I miss Idaho and it's obsession with fry sauce. Anyway, go to grumpy's, it's good times.

Dear Grumpy's, I love you. I really do. I count the days until I again walk through your two doors. (about 127). You don't need a review. People know. The Grumpy's Burgers, the fowl burgers, the Schooners....oh, YUM!!

Not sure how to add to the review what hasn't already been said. Good burgers and huge beers and Zep on the jukebox.

  • N J.

A great divey bar with big 32 oz beers. The food is fine, but not that good. These are run-of-the-mill frozen burger patty burgers. They do give you a big old squeeze bottle of fry sauce however, which is awesome. The chicken sandwich is pretty good. The fries are fine. It's more about the big beers and the overall feel of Grumpy's. There's also a pretty nice view if you're sitting out front in good weather. IMPORTANT: Grumpy's is CASH ONLY.

Worth a vist for the decor alone.....A historical collection of beer cans cover the walls, interspersed with some very humorous license plates and smart ass signs. Funny that they have to close early because of the neighborhood---it is located in a light industrial area next to a laundry and across from a pet grooming salon..... The surly shtick the bartenders (who also take the food orders since there is no wait staff) toss around is freindly enough. The burgers, which are the best sellers, are pre packaged patties and come in 2 sizes. Not gourmet, but tasty when served with fresh, thin hot fries, along with schooners of the local beers, whicha re great ansd a steal at 3.75. The buffalo wings were very decent also. Not terribly meaty, but tasty. I took my wife and 2 sons aged 12 and 14 there.....The kids loved it...the wife liked the atmosphere but was chagrinned to find that the word "salad" was defined as the lettuce and tomato garnish that came on the burgers. One other positive...the TUNES. While I was there I heard a very eclectic collection of rock tunes played LOUD, seventies style. Joe Cocker to Seger to Zappa to Zep. So a 5 rating for the beer and 3 for the food. It is a great place to go to get away from the SV crowd. Dress code......Covered body parts. (for men that is) Oh yeah ....they don't have a phone, so no rezzies

It doesn't say "Friendly's" on the sign for a reason. Yet like the gluttons for punishment we are, this is a wildly popular place. It's perfect for apres ski. It's perfect for pre-ski, too, if you don't need to hit the slopes early. It's perfect for after work. It's a perfect pre-cursor to a night out on the town (they close early due to neighborhood noise ordinances). It's perfect to grab lunch, dinner, just beer, just a burger. Whatever you like - well as long as its on the menu, that is. And the menu, by the way, is located on a big green board on the west facing wall. Walk in the front door and turn around. If the tourists could figure this out, the staff might not be as grumpy ... but then again, it wouldn't be Grumpy's without hearing the bartenders dish out insults to the tourists and locals alike. Oh, and the east end of the bar belongs to the locals. Don't even try it if you were flown here and not grown here. The burgers are great. If you don't have powers of deduction the "fowl burger" is a teriyaki chicken breast. They do have veggie burgers, corndogs, and the typical bar fare. Beer is served in a 32 oz schooner for just $4.75 for the good stuff; $3.50 for the crap (aka domestic).

Grumpy's is a must hit on any of my summer or winter visits. I've literally been going there since I was a kid and the best part is how little is has changed. With rustic charm, classic decor, pool tables, an outstanding grill and gargantuan draft beer, you will definitely enjoy this "quaint" spot. It's worth the wait even when it is shoulder to shoulder. I highly recommend their chicken sandwich a.k.a. fowl burger! Delilsh.
