I've been hear a dozen or so times. The food is nearly always great. The service is hit and miss. Sometimes I get a server who is great, other times I get one who just doesn't give a damn. One problem that I've always noticed is that the floor is never clean. It always feels like it got mopped with the kitchen mop...

MickeyRay's is a pleasant little American-fare eatery. We stopped in late one Saturday afternoon and had the place to ourselves. The waiter was nice, and funny, and the surroundings comfortable. I ordered the cheeseburger with smoky Tillamook cheese (yes, the cheese DOES make a difference) and a refreshing cucumber salad, and my hub had a fried bologna and egg sandwich (thought I knew everything about the man, but his selection threw me off). Both dishes were tasty. The buns were a little dry and the hamburger patty too well done (the waiter did not ask about "doneness".) All and all, it was a good meal.

Best BBQ Ive had since Missoura. If u dont like it, then your one of the 5% of the 100% that is not satisfied. This is normal for all businesses of all sorts. Mickey is on top if his staff, and u can see they know its important to be ontop of things. If ur service is bad or the food is bad, its due to bad employees not Mickey's itself. Its hard enough to find good people to work for you when your running a business. Id say hes got that squared away, and the staff ive encountered are very helpful in every way. So if its only a few people in there or a full house, the food is amazing. The brownies, beef brisket burger and mac are my favs. Both sites have an amazing atmosphere and its always been nothing but pleasant there. So check ur ego at the door, ur in Mickeys house. Thats just southern hospitality.

I was to attend a birthday party here and thought I'd check out Yelp to see what to order. The reviews from 2012 & 2013 were 5 stars, then declining in 2014 & 2015. I guess I was going to find out for myself. First let me say I was not paying for my meal so I feel like I can be very impartial in this review. Ribs: While the ribs ok, they tasted like they were cooked with liquid smoke rather than over wood coals. They were a little tough and a bit chewy. Pulled pork: Very tasty. Just a hint of vinegar rather than overly sweet. I liked it. Beef brisket: Very tender brisket with just a thin layer of fat along the top. But no taste. Cucumber salad: VERY, VERY vinegary. Ok for me, but most did not like it. The kids wouldn't touch it. Beans: Served cold. Had an odd spice to it. Someone thought rosemary, another thought thyme. I say - WTH? Mac and cheese: The kids loved it. Very milky. Not cheesy. Like from a box. The adults passed. Black eyed peas: Don't know. I wouldn't touch them, but others thought they were good. No cornbread, or any other bread for that matter. Again, WTH? The iced tea was good. Tap beer was warm, hence half was foam./ Traded it for a bottled beer. Service was very good. Not great. but good. Take my advice, skip this place and head for the best BBQ in the valley, Bodacious Pig. It's only 3 blocks down from Mickey Ray's.

Plain and simple, Mickey doesn't give a sh@& anymore. This used to be a great place! Two weeks ago we went in for Hamburger Wednesday. We were a party of 8. Drinks were slow going and after 1 hour and 5 minutes of waiting for our food, I went to the counter and asked for Mickey. The guy said Mickey went home about an hour earlier. He also said they were down 3 servers. What business owner goes home when you are short handed?? I asked for another round of drinks and the kid said that the only one allowed to serve alcohol was this young lady that was working the back room. So it was another 20 minutes before the drinks came. Then the young man came to our table and brought me my burger. Yay! But he only brought mine! He also said, "oh btw, those of you that ordered potatoes, they all spoiled!" I looked closely at my burger and it looked like something the cook found on the floor and fried it up; it was burnt big time! 4 out of the 8 had to reorder. The server said he would redo my order. Over 2 hours later, ( no sh$& Mickey) we finally received our food! The young man serving felt really bad! He kept apologizing. This wasn't his fault. Rather 110% Mickey's! Won't ever go back! We used to be regulars! Done!

Delicious Arkansas style BBQ! Mickey Ray's Roadhouse BBQ has a nice atmosphere, friendly and prompt service and most importantly FANTASTIC food. I ate the smoked sausage, hubby had the burnt ends brisket, kids ate ribs. All were fantastic. Sides ranged from nice (Mac & Cheese) to "OMG I could eat this every day" (fried pickles, onion rings and coleslaw). Two kinds of BBQ sauce - both unique and tangy. Best part is Mickey, the owner, strolling around the place, checking up on you. Fantastic personality and he really wants to make sure you enjoyed your meal. This is our new favorite BBQ joint!!

I went here with some family and we were very pleased with our experience. Staff was friendly. Mickey himself even came out to make a recommendation. The food was good. Maybe not the best BBQ I've ever had, but it was indeed very tasty. Good service, good food.

The Eagle place needs a good cleaning. Food is not as good as Goodwood or Bodacious Pig.

Great service Bri! Hostess was awesome too. Ordered the brisket with a salad, fried okra and greens-easily the best greens I have ever had! The brisket melted in my mouth and the sauce on the side was the perfect amount of sweet. Big helpings leaving some for lunch tomorrow. And reasonably priced! I think my meal was $12! I will be back! Maybe tomorrow ;-)

Loved the service, restrooms clean, the layout provided individual dinning experience, was not corralled into one section. New style of cole slaw was shared and loved it. Would refer to true meat eaters.

On their good days, I'd give them a 6. Best BBQ in the area. Best in Texas? No. Best in Idaho? Reasonably certain. On their ok days, I'd give them a 3. Sometimes the meat is incredible. Incredible. Angels sing. Other days, you just paid $$ for ribs that were several hours underdone (think rubber bands) or chopped pork that is a bit dry. Always confident it's fresh. Not always confident they have consistent kitchen practices for how long a rib is to cook. i guess I've had most frustration with the ribs - so I might not stop going after two bad rib experiences (one glorious), I might just never order their ribs again. The location is great. The atmosphere is awesome. Most of their wait staff (I've gone 15 times or so since they opened) is good. The owners are nice, but gosh darn it...level out the quality of the food for heaven sake. $21 for rubber band ribs is not okay.

Had Lunch here with a large group from work. The special was a burnt end sandwich with Fries and a drink for $9.95. Was very good and the service for such a large group was excellent. Sandwich was above average (comparing tot he Old Eagle Rib Shack) and there was plenty of meat. Fries were excellent... Cuke salad was poor... way too many onions and not enought Cukes... Hushpuppies were excellent. The server (Tyler) was fast and got everyone's bills correct, a pretty amazing thing do to they large group. The review from the group was good. and was given a "good place to come for a quick good lunch".

Nom, nom, nom. Yes... I said nom. Cause I nommed it down my face hole! I have been pretty traumatized since the closing of Eagle Rib Shack and let's get real, Famous Dave's doesn't cut it for BBQ at all. So when I rolled into Mickey Ray's I was hoping for something descent. Clean and neat dining area. The server was super informative and helpful. But, let's get to the good stuff: the food. We ordered the Jalapeno appetizer and was stoked! I hate deep fried poppers. But, these were the way I make them. Stuffed with cream cheese and wrapped in Bacon. Everything is better with Bacon. Throw on some BBQ sauce and we are in business! Dinner, One meat with two sides and white bread. Yes please. I did Burnt Ends, coleslaw and mac and cheese. Meat- yum. Coleslaw- Hells yes. And Mac and Cheese(with Bacon)- good. Not blowing my mind, but good. How much you ask? 12$ and I took part home. I think for the two meat version, it was 14$. Still a deal. Total meal for two water drinkers: 33$ So doable. Did I mention the water glasses are Mason Jars? I love that. SO, in closing. I am a tough Yelper and can be brutal. This was great. Not southern, lose your mind BBQ, but great none the less. Go team Mickey Ray!

Took my wife and two kids. Got the burnt tips sandwich and my wife got the chili. Kids got grilled cheese. The grilled cheese still had the American cheese slices visibly unmelted. My burnt tip sandwich was warm not hot. I guess they are ok with food leaving the kitchen sub par. We live almost across the street and wanted to have a walk to eatery. Too bad. I had high hopes. We'll stick with Bardenay as Mickey Rays is just not good quality food or experience. We tried.

Been a long time since I've felt compelled to complain about a restaurant, but when I purchased a "Crawfish Boil" ticket for "All-You-Can-Eat-Crawfish" and I got less than 10 crawfish you can bet I was more than a little irritated. I did what many people would do who felt like they'd been the victims of a bait-n-switch, I told a staff member I was unhappy with the situation and left it. I was then approached by Mickey himself at my table with a full refund...great I thought, he'll apologize for the situation and I'll continue patronizing his establishments...wrong. Instead of apologizing, Mickey proceeded on a rant accusing me of harrassing his staff members, calling me a wise ass, and essentially saying that I was in the wrong because his restaurant didn't deliver what he sold to those in attendance. I can tell you I've never felt more embarrassed or insulted in a restaurant, and I've eaten at Mickey Ray's establishments plenty of times. I will never be back, neither will my table mates at the crawfish feed, and neither will any of the people I tell about Mickey's way of doing business. You could have handled it right by apologizing and explaining yourself Mickey, but you didn't, you chose the low road and I'll make sure people know about it. Your barbecue is pretty good, your act is kinda funny, but Mickey is a jerk, unprofessional, rude, and crooked. Heave forbid he actually acknowledge that he was the one who messed up... You know Dickey's Barbecue, Famous Dave's, and Goodwood aren't that bad and are a hell of a lot better than having to put up with Mickey insulting you.

Im from Texas, so I love good bbq. Whenever there is a new bbq place in town, I have to try it. I went to MickeyRay's with the high hopes of having great brisket. I was very disappointed! I asked the waitress if the brisket could be lean. Her response was that brisket was a very fatty cut of meat. She is right, but also dead wrong. In its raw form, brisket is indeed very fatty. But it can be trimmed and usually is. Some people like their meat fatty and greasy. Other folks, like me, like it lean with no fat at all. Every bbq place I have been too gives the fatty stuff to those that like or don't mind fat. If you request it, they will give you the lean stuff. Other places like Goodwood serve only lean brisket. Either this waitress had no clue what she was talking about, didn't care, or only knew the fatty stuff that MickeyRay's serves. The later is probably the more likely story. I decided to try the brisket anyway. When it came out, there was almost no meat to be found. The brisket was practically all fat. I left it sitting on the plate and swore to never return.

Pork ribs were ok, not very moist. The BBQ sauce lacked any bite; and the decor still has the macaroni grill look, so it does not match up with the music or food.

  • Mark T.

If you don't have other options, this is better than no BBQ. However, the brisket was dry and crumbly (overcooked) with minimal smoked flavor, the cheesy potatoes had good flavor, but there was a puddle of oil in the bottom of the dish, and the coleslaw was really not good. The coleslaw was all green, no carrots, and was a finely minced coleslaw mush. Service was good and very friendly.

Updating this review - I stopped in not long ago and tried again. This time the service was way better, very responsive. For food, I got the ribs, they were OK. Not great, just OK. They just are not flavors I really care for. The rub was not for me and I am not big on using molasses for other flavors like sauce. I still did not try the sweet tea, still cannot comment there. Being raised in the south around southern cooking the fried okra also was not for me either. There is not question these guys know how to BBQ and a family shop is better than a chain. I will keep trying to see if there is other dishes that hit the spot. What a shame. Two guys Mickey and Ray who are passionate about being pit masters and serving friends and family trying to make a run at the BBQ business. Likely no food service experience and suffering the start up blues. Born and raised in the south we have BBQ in our blood and have seen this story unfold many times. In fact; very few make it. When you have two families who are long time residents of Eagle Idaho trying to sell sweet tea, fried Okra, Smoked Pork and fried catfish in Idaho, you have to check it out. I mean really sweet tea north of Tennessee? We walked in and although they were busy, there were several open tables. We choose the bar, mistake number one. After being there for 10 minutes with no acknowledgment of existing we did get a good glimpse of how the back of the house was struggling and the front of the house totally unorganized. After 10 minutes of reading the menu I said it was clear no one works the bar, lets try a table. We approached the hostess and asked for a table. We were promptly seated. After sitting for almost 10 more minutes and observing others who seemed to be waiting a long time for a check or their drink order. A waitress who was covering a "large group" in the " Other Room " came and apologized for how long it took for her come over. In a rushed manner she asked if we wanted to order drinks and food all at once, hoping we would do so I am sure, if she was split between two rooms. We obliged and then she kindly let us know they were out of ribs until 7. We decided to go elsewhere at that point. We really hope these guys can pull it together and make it. We will likely try once more so, we can rate the food and hopefully change our rating. For now I will have to keep pulling pork from my own pit and drinking the sweet tea from our fridge.

Awesome BBQ, and amazing service. My wife and I visited Boise for the first time last week. We drove up from SF on a whim to see if we'd like to relocate to Boise down the road. Heard about Mickey Ray's from a sales associate at Cabela's...the food was amazing. This might be an Idaho thing, but the waitress introduced herself, shook our hands, then the manager came over after our meal and introduced himself and shook our hands. We felt like regulars by the time we left. We walked out in love with the restaurant and in love with Boise. It will be our home in the near future and we will be back to Mickey Rays. Great job!!! BTW...Memphis style chopped pork sandwich...THAT JUST HAPPENED! Woooooooh!!!!! Damn good.

You can't beat the little sumpin' sumpin' you'll get at Mickey Ray's. It's BBQ done right. And it's quality that never changes. Choose your meat, and don't forget to order some jalapeno poppers with bacon... top that off with some banana pudding... What are you waiting for??

  • John W.

Damn good 'Q. Flew in to Boise with a few friends and had the opportunity to try them out. Had the brisket and the Italian sausage combo plate. Excellent. The Mac and Cheese was my side and had the bacon bits. Nice drink sizes using the pickle jars with free refills. The brisket was very tender, and they didn't remove every ounce of fat like most places. This made it better than usual for me. The others in the group also liked it very much. The sausage could have been a little more moist inside, but I will try the other ones in the future. Overall, great BBQ and I would certainly recommend them...it's worth a stop. Oh yeah, the servers were very friendly (Parke Shields thanked us as we left, and Maddie was a super server) which always makes dining a little better in my book.

Was not impressed. There are different ways to cook ribs. And they just didn't do it for me. Place was crowded and others were enjoying it. Very nice inside, clean, friendly.

Very good smoked chicken salad. The best hushpuppies I have ever had! I am looking forward to trying more of the menu.

I had the burnt ends sandwich lunch special and it was fantastic. I love sauces and all of theirs were great tasting and unique. It's a little more expensive but the portions were nice and hearty. it's locally-owned and they've done a great job to make it look professional. I really liked the fact that it wasn't just another hole in the wall.

  • Steve T.

Darn good. Best hushpuppies, cucumber salad, and turnip greens that I've had anywhere. The pork was moist and tender if a bit light on the smoke. The brisket had a wonderful flavor but hadn't been properly trimmed so was a bit fattier than I like. 3 kinds of sauces were nicely sweet but all tasted very similar. The only disappointment was my wife's chicken, which was small and a bit on the dry side compared to her benchmark chicken at Texas Roadhouse. The waitress was attentive and friendly. And the price was more reasonable than the old Roadhouse BBQ on Iron Eagle. Definitely worth a trip.

Honey and I had lunch there the other day. Split a sandwich (plenty of food for two). The chopped pork sandwich was amazing! Not greasy. Great fries. And I am an iced tea aficionado! This was strong and dark and fresh, just as it should be. Reasonably priced. Place was cute. Come on Eagle, eat out tonight!

went in on a Saturday evening, place was busy, always a good sign. Good decor and both of the owners were there mingling with the customers. I had the brisket and it must have been the outer layer of the brisket because it was a little on the fatty side. More so than all the other bar b que places in town, That is not a bad thing, most of the time, but the piece I had was chard on the outside. Therefore, I could only taste the black chardness of the cooking process and not the flavor of the meat. the sides were very good and the service from my waitress was five stars!! Attentive and cordial! I will go back and may even try the brisket again. I hear the Prime Rib special is worthwhile.

  • Michael M.

If you like tender, fall off the bone, warm bbq ribs.... Then go elsewhere! BUT, if you're into dry, tough, and slightly warm ribs, this is your spot. The BBQ sauce is fantastic however. From what I could tell by the rest of my family's meals, they faired about the same. If I go back, it'll be to buy some sauce.

  • TimOthy S.

Staff were friendly attentive and helpful. Ordered the $33 platter for 4.... WAY over priced for the portion size.. 1 person could easily eat everything... Meat tasted ok but was cold... Sausage tasted like Bologna... Mac and cheese tastes like box Kraft with bacon on top.... Not impressed at all.

  • Kathy S.

Let me start by saying 'we really wanted to like this place'. However that was not to be and now I need to warn you all about it. Strike one...beer on tap was flat and stale. Strike two...bottled sauces on table all had different labels so we thought we would see which one we'd like to sauce our meat with. they were so watery, dared not pour any out and all had the SAME vinegary smell. skip the sauce. Strike three...Baked Beans were served cold. When we sent them back for heat up, they came back with funny taste to them....Tasted like the spice thyme was added to it. Who puts thyme in baked beans??? I guess we should be glad (or hope) that no one peed in them before reserving. Strike four....yes there is more.... the meat, pork ribs and some special that looked like a caveman bone, were tasteless. They told us the rub was glutten free.??? well it could have used some glutten maybe. They kept asking if everything was fine and we got tired of complaining about everything so just let it go at the time. Not going back. Not worth giving them another shot.

    (2)
  • Rach G.

Horrible service!! Will not be going back! Not just a one time thing either, the last two times we went it was terrible. We thought that with the "okay" service before that it was just a fluke when we were treated so poorly so we tried again. Nope! Their service has gone way downhill and management does not care.

This was our second visit and the food and service was excellent both times. While this a BBQ place, they have the best burgers in the Treasure Valley and the cucumber salad is fantastic!

  • Kevin N.

The food is relatively good, although it's not the best BBQ I have ever had. Surroundings are a bit plain, and sometimes noisy when the place is full, but it wasn't too bad overall. Prices are pretty good too.

  • Rubilee T.

The food was great and the service was exceptional. We sat at the bar and was greeted by the owner shortly after who gave my husband "knuckles" for ordering the ribs! I like my food piping hot and I asked for it to be heated up more and emphasozed it wasn't a complaint just preference. They quickly accomodated and it was amazing. Mickey Rays is great. Give it a try!
