On what I believed would be my only visit to Buhl, someone recommended La Plaza. I was surprised to see dishes that I rarely had seen before. I was amazed at the quality of the food. I dine at a lot of highly rated Mexican restaurants in the San Francisco area, but I enjoyed my meal at La Plaza more than any other. I am by no means an expert on Mexican cuisine. I agree with the review that the food seems more authentic. I also appreciated the appearance of four distinct home-made salsas with varying spice. My only disapointment was that they did not have the lamb borrego (?), though I could not be happier with the pork version. This dish seems similar to the birria that I once enjoyed on a trip to Mexico, chunks of meat in a wonderfully flavorful sauce. My evening was so delightful, that two weeks later I drove 30 miles out of my way to sample the cuisine once again, with the same result. I dearly hope that I find a restaurant of this quality closer to home. Already I am plotting an excuse to return to southern Idaho.

We have eaten at La Plaza for as long as they have been in business and we continue to find this the best Mexican food in Buhl. There are seven Mexican restaurants in our little town. This is definitely the best. Lupe and her husband cook authentic Mexican - not Tex Mex. So if you prefer the latter you might not like La Plaza. But try it anyway. We recommend it to anyone looking for a good restaurant in our area. Marilyn B.

My family and I just had the most amazing lunch here. Amazing marinated lamb, fresh homemade tortillas and horchata can't be missed.

I felt like yelp let me down on this one. I saw a bunch of 5 star reviews and drove past about 5 or 6 other Mexican restaurants to come to this one. We ate there on a slow Saturday afternoon and even though the restaurant was not busy our service seemed slow (but friendly). I, like another reviewer, was a little disappointed that the chips and salsa were not included. I ordered the Tacos Dorado (chicken ) and my son ordered the pork Chimichanga. The tacos were good, but not great, and I was disappointed with the portion size. I left feeling still hungry which never happens to me at a Mexican restaurants. I tasted the Chimichanga and it was good but very spicy, so much so that my son, who loves spicy food, couldn't finish it. In the end, this was an okay dinning experience and nothing more.

The style of the Mexican food is advertised as Aguascalientes, from the central region of Mexico, but some of the dishes are distinctly Tex-mex so I will review it as such. The restaurant is very small, clean and the service is very prompt and courteous. I enjoyed the meal but found the chile relleno egg batter was undercooked and was more like a runny omelette than what I was expecting. Something else they do at this establishment is charge for table chips and salsa, with no refills. Whenever I go out for Mexican I nail the chips and salsa and it's gone in about 10 seconds, so this was disappointing. The verde enchiladas also was not inspiring, neither were the sides of retried beans and Spanish rice.

Driving back from Jackpot (buffet prices were ridiculous) and looking for a decent place to eat in Buhl. Saw the high rating for this place and thought it was worth a try. Incredibly disappointed. Service was terrible. Our waiter was a child who looked about 13 years old. They ran out of tortilla chips, which eliminates a ton of options for appetizers (we asked for guacamole). Silverware wasn't set up and the wait was incredibly long for a party of four. Waited about twenty minutes and according to the young waiter they didn't even start cooking our meals by then. After that we left. Place doesn't deserve a solid 5, to be honest.

We've had a lot of Mexican food in our day, and this place was BY FAR THE BEST we have ever had. Everything was fresh, and the flavors were wonderful. I cannot stress enough how wonderful it was. The owner came to each table, and talked just enough to let us see she is very proud, as she should be!!! The cherizo bean dip was like nothing I have ever tasted!

While visiting Idaho from the northeast, a snowstorm lengthened our stay. This gave us a chance to explore and we wound up at La Plaza restaurant in Buhl, as we were also visiting some hot springs in the area. The food is AMAZING. They cook everything on the spot, so it's always fresh, and they even make their own tortillas. This is absolutely the BEST Mexican food I have eaten. While it is somewhat out of the way, it is well worth the drive. We even took some frozen tamales home with us and they were a delicious treat. We wish we had gotten more! The owner said that they would soon be moving to Twin Falls, a testament to the growth of the business. Make sure you try it, either here or at their new location.

I just moved onto Buhl from California where Mexican food restaurants are plentiful. I was worried that I wouldn't find a good Mexican food restaurants in Idaho, but.....I worry no more. The owners are extremely welcoming and friendly. The food is full of flavor. I am beyond happy with La Plaza and can't wait to return.

We regularly drive out of our way to eat at La Plaza, they serve the best mexican food in Southern Idaho (maybe North America?)! I love the lamb, and Ranchero Fajitas. I always feel like family when I walk in the door, they have great service! I also love the party platters I order the chipotle chicken and roast pork when I have surprise company. It's an affordable way to feed a crowd and everyone always loves it. If you love your belly at all, you will get in your car right now and get yourself to La Plaza.

Seriously the best mexican we have ever found. Everything cooked fresh with good fresh ingredients. We find it hard to buy any other mexican now.

Best real Mexican food in Idaho, bar none, and perhaps all of the Western US - truly gourmet! Roast lamb in terrific sauce, farm fresh chili for delicate chili relleno, sublime guacamole and melt-in-your-mouth homemade tortillas, as well as multiple homemade spicy sauces for added zing. More than worth our 2 hour drive to out-of-the-way Buhl, ID, for dinner. We'll be back, OFTEN!

Stopped here because of the other reviews! No exaggeration, this is delicious food. We had the special enchilada & empanadas with rice and beans. Homemade lemonade. I surely hope we pass this way again we will stop for sure! Love good Mexican food and this is 5 star yum!!!

Delicious! I had chicken sopes/zopes and carnitas tacos and they were outstanding! You gotta try the lemonade too. The beans were also very good. This is a family owned and operated business and they make you feel very welcomed. If you're staying in nearby Twin Falls....make a trip out to LA Paz restaurant in Buhl Idaho.

I have always entirely enjoyed eating at La Plaza. Most times the owner is our waitress. She is friendly and is concerned with your enjoyment. She has said she values feedback as she uses it to improve upon her dishes. Really? Someone who cares what you think? Last time I went I had the Chile Relleno Burrito. It was so flavorful, and the texture of the chile was perfect. The size was enormous but there was no way I was stopping. The food there is definitely more authentic. I feel like I am getting my money's worth. My soda never stays empty for long if at all. And my toddler thoroughly enjoys the bean dip. I don't really enjoy it's effects on her later, but... La Plaza proudly displays their inspection report on the front counter. I forget exactly how they score it. A+? 100%? I always look at it when paying the bill. Sanitation and cleanliness are important to me and these two things are evident at La Plaza.

Passing through Buhl around dinnertime on our recent epic three week road trip, we found ourselves in the mood for Mexican. Which was lucky because there aren't very many restaurants in this tiny town. I think there are actually two Mexican places but the review of this place sounded better. Well we were very pleased with our choice. The food was AWESOME and I would say tending more towards authentic than towards gringo. On special that night were empenadas, which I don't really think of a Mexican dish, but boy were they delicious. My younger daughter had potato tacos and pretty much had to fight her dad and me off because we kept stealing bites. And my husband basically created his own sampler platter by ordering like 4 different ala carte items that sounded interesting. They also had some delicious green sauce (homemade I'm sure) in a squeezy bottle...mmmmmmm......and we had something good to drink. Dammit if I can't remember what (I think I've said it in previous reviews - this was a long vacation and it's all starting to blur together. Maybe it was homemade lemonade? I'm pretty sure it was the owner waiting on us. She was super nice and talked to us for quite a while. One kind of weird thing, they had a birdcage in the dining room which was a little weird to me. We weren't sitting right next to it though. Maybe the health codes in Idaho are more lax than other parts of the country because most places I don't think you can keep your pets around the food. The other weird thing, but good on the part of La Plaza - this whole town smells kind of awful - somewhere between manure and dog food. But you could not smell the outside stench one bit inside. Thankfully.

Stopped at Oregon Trail Inn for a night. Owner, Rick, highly recommended La Plaza as the best most authentic Mexican in a small town with several Mexican restaurants. I was super excited when I pulled into the parking lot and saw "lamb" on the sign out front. You know you're going somewhere great when they list that out front because most places won't bother to make lamb unless they really know what they are doing with it and La Plaza knows its stuff! Gently seasoned perfectly tender stewed lamb served with homemade fluffy corn tortillas. We are on a diet and they easily accommodated us by substituting a simple but ample salad instead of rice and beans. The homemade salsas are spot-on. Can't wait to take some home/on the road with us as they have it for sale in glass jars. Yum! Can't wait until next time I have to travel this way just to come back and eat here again!!!! Staff was super friendly, too.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
