I am in Des Moines for business. I checked this place out. The idea is to cook your own steak... The steaks are great and great quality. Salad bar was nice but little selection.

The meat is great. The restaurant and cooking/grilling areas need major cleaning and updating. I won't go back -- it didn't feel clean to me, and the lack of ambiance married to the pretty high prices for "cook it yourself" food and overcooked side dishes just isn't worth another try.

Good food all around. Once you get past the thought of do it yourself...it's all good!

Amazing. We went here two out of three nights last week. I wish I could remember the name of our server (she said she lit the grill every afternoon). Our group had the cowboy one night and the bacon wrapped filet the second night. Once we asked them for other meat choices them what they had in the display case, we were well on our way to a successful meal. I only wish they would offer the large fillets without the bacon, I want to taste the beef! The rye whiskey offerings were great too!

Who makes the best steak in town? You do. Rube's provides the finest meat, you do the grilling. And make sure you slather your steak in butter before and during grilling. Dusty liberally in seasoned salt and cracked pepper. Rub it in, if you don't mind getting your hands dirty. Find a very hot part of the grill. Use your hand to test for the hottest spots. Sear, and then move it to the edge, where it's cooler. Did I mention it's charcoal? Can't beat that taste. Oh, but what to do while it's grilling? Thick slice after thick slice of toast, right off the grill.

When the food is amazing the review does not need to be long. The steak was amazing, juicy, tender, bursting with flavor. You cook it yourself on charcoal and it is great fun with friends. A great concept and great steaks.

Feel like grilling your own steak? You betcha! Rube's lets you do it. Pick the steak from the meat counter where they're on display from sirloins to Porterhouse to New York strip. This is some quality Iowa cow going on here. Tasty. Marbled. Great looking! Then you'll bring it over to the grill where you'll find a hot spot and go to town. You like it rare? Well done? Blackened to a crisp? Whatever your taste is, you're good to go. And while it's cooking, prepare your own Texas toast. Suggestion: Make at least two, because for sure the first one is going to be a burnt sacrifice to the toast gods. Trust me. Salad bar, potato bar, nice hot baked beans. All included. Yes, they have some other extras but trust your friend Bruce - you don't really need these extras. Or the extra spices. A little salt, a little pepper, you're good to go. After our steaks were cooked and we're digging in, a table of a dozen Japanese tourists come in. They've never sen anything like this before and it was hilarious to watch.

I dined at Rube's as part of a wedding rehearsal dinner. It's a fun place that's a little different and unique and I'm surprised I haven't seen it more often. Basically, it's a grill your own steak place. Normally, you go to the front and choose your meat from a large case. Since we were a large group our meat choices were limited but we still had plenty to choose from: ribeye, strip steak, bacon wrapped filet, pork chop or swordfish. While milling around waiting for the meat to arrive, a waitress ran drink orders. Some folks ventured to the massive charcoal grill and slapped down thick slices of Texas toast. Melted butter and various spices are available to brush on. I did the traditional garlic bread and it was addictive. It was funny to watch. Someone would grill a slice of bread, scarf it down, and be back at the grill doing four at a time. Yes, it was that good. After selecting a choice of meat, people gathered around the grill and started grilling their steak. There's all manner of spices and rubs to add to your steak, plus you can ladle melted butter over it. Don't get carried away, though, and over spice your steak. These are good cuts of meat that don't need any enhancement. Grilling can take a little time, but that's what makes this a fun group experience, bonding at the grill. There's also a small bar with potatoes and baked beans, plus a small salad bar that could be described as minimal at best, pathetic at worst. Normally I like my food to come assembled, which is why I love fajitas but don't order them often. I heard a number of people comment that they weren't wild about cooking their own food. But overall, I'd say everyone had fun doing it. It was a unique and memorable evening.

Best steak I've had in ages! It was SO fresh, even rare the flavor was amazing! I'm always worried about how my steak is cooked at restaurants so I love that you get to grill your own. Highly recommend the crab stuffed mushrooms and jalapeño poppers as sides, they were delicious! The skillet potatoes were also great. The salad bar leaves a little to be desired, but I wasn't there to eat salad.

The quality of the meat was pretty good, but the prices were pretty high for having to cook it yourself. We had a party of six and they sent us through the salad bar first. It was fairly skimpy with just the most basic of offerings. it didn't take us long to finish our salads, but then we just sat there and waited for 40 minutes until our waitress took us to the meat counter. They have extra sides you can purchase for an extra $8-$12, otherwise a lukewarm potato and beans are included, along with grill your own garlic bread. After working all day the last thing I felt like doing was standing and cooking my own food for 30-40 minutes. Dinner took us almost 2 1/2 hours, then we had to wait another 1/2 hour to get our checks. Not likely to ever go back. :(

Steaks, chops, a glorious shrine to tasty protein goodness. This is a must visit destination, an essential spot for fantastic thick juicy Iowa steaks and chops. Great sides, great staff, did I mention the tasty steaks. Bone in Rib Eye. And then there are the sides. Jalapeño cream corn. Mmmmm.

Rube's is a one-of-a-kind place, think Hibachi grill except it's the best steak ever, and you're the chef. Open flame-grilled steaks and all you can eat Texas toast, salad bar, baked beans, and potato, plus optional appetizers and desserts means there is no way you will leave hungry. While I like the idea of grilling it yourself, especially if you're with someone (or maybe you ARE that someone!) who is an awesome Grill Master, the grill area could use a little...I don't know...SOMETHING to liven' the place up. Maybe TVs showing old Clint Eastwood movies? I'm sure it would be more fun with a larger group, but on the night I went it was all a bunch of couples, and we all just sort of stood there staring at our steaks cook. Plus is was pretty quiet so anything you did say to your party of 2 would be heard by just about anyone. Other than that, the place was great. Our server was very nice and accommodating, the dining room was dimly lit and comfortable, and the sides were all very good. The salad bar could have been a little more vast, but I think people come here for the meat, so it's hardly an issue. Definitely worth a visit!

This place claims to be a steakhouse but I didn't see one pepper mill in there. Our waiter was an idiot. Salad bar selection was small and shoved in a cramped corner which did not give 360° of access. The grill area is also cramped and it wasn't even busy when we were there. The baked beans were cold, although some people eat their baked beans cold...but they were in the same heated area as the potato bar and they were hot. Once it started getting busy, they turned on the music which caused everyone to have to talk even louder so I was basically yelling so that my family at the same table could hear me. There were only 2 pros: the meat was great and the bathroom faucets provided hot water immediately.

MEAT! MEAT! Now I'm waiting for a restaurant that gives you a maillot and machete, tells you to go out in back to take out your own cow and hack off your own cut of steak. It took me a long time to come to terms with Rube's where you pick out a cut of steak and then proceed to cook it yourself over one of several open pits in the restaurant. Why go through all the effort? Might as well just go to the local Piggly Wiggly and throw it on the barbie. That way you don't need to even get out of your bathrobe and bunnie slippers. But the cuts of meat ARE great and the novelty and the community of cooking together with friends is a real hoot. Salad bar is pretty standard but it just means more room for good steak. Definitely worth a stop if you are in the neighborhood of Grinnel College. (There's not much else nearby anyway!)

This was a good meal, but it could have been so much better. No menu, so I had no idea how much I was spending. Everything costs money, including the splash of red wine added to my mushroom skillet for $2. I saw other people eating things I would have ordered, (stuffed mushrooms and green beans) but I didn't know it was a choice. The meal comes with the salad bar, but my server took me right to the meat case, and off to the grill, so I had no time to get a salad before I prepared my hot food. I arrived right after the restaurant opened, so the skillet potatoes and baked beans were tepid. The dining room was cool, (to offset the heat of the grill) so my hot food cooled off pretty quickly. My server refilled my unsweet iced tea with sweet tea and didn't come back. I had a coupon for a free gift valued at $14.95, and I got a 1 oz packet of meat rub. Still, the meat was good, the server was polite and personable, and it would be worth another try - now that I know what to do!

We ventured here with a good sized group of 12 on a Friday night. We had a reservation but I really do not think it was necessary as there were still plenty of empty tables. There was a bachelor party (great place for this) that came in while we were there but there is a back room that they were able to stay in. Our waitress did a nice job with keeping our group all straight and guiding us through the entire process. The men and some of the ladies got some large beers but they do also have wine at decent prices. After drinks were delivered, our waitress took us all up to the meat case to explain the steak and side options along with their prices (prices are also on a board above). With a large group, I will say it was a bit hard to all fit around the case but luckily I didn't need to listen past the smallest option. Our waitress then called on each of us via our ticket number that she had assigned each of us. A guy behind the meat case put our choices on the plate and handed it to us. Then we proceeded to the large grill to cook everything and also get garlic bread (Texas Toast with butter and garlic powder) going. I have been to other 'cook your own steak' places, just not in Iowa. I have always paid the extra to have them cook the steak but deciding to try it out this time (probably because everyone else was doing it). They have some spices you can add to your steak if desired. The grill gets sooo hot to the point that it was almost unbearable to stand near it. My face got so warm and it took me quite a time to cool off later. After the steaks and garlic bread were done, we ventured to the salad and potato bar. Do not expect much from the salad bar as it is rather basic with lettuce and some toppings. There were a few potato options which were fine for me since I knew my steak would mostly fill me up. Once back at the table, it was a normal meal. Overall, it was a nice time and I actually found the prices to be reasonable. I believe we will go back sometime.

This is a cozy fun restaurant, I like that it is kinda away from things, but not too far away. This place is a steakhouse where you pick your own meat, sides, rub, and grill it yourself, yes it is different and yes it is fun. They have quality choices of meat to choose from, also has salad bar that is all you can eat. Can be a little pricey, depends on how you feel about paying the price and cooking yourself. If your looking for something different with a group a friends this can be a nice change up.

First time visit for dinner on 2/13/13. The concept was unique as you pick your cut of meat and then grill it yourself. We went with the 16oz filet wrapped with bacon. The cooking process was pretty straightforward and we enjoyed the ambiance. They provide a ton of sides and salad so you can chomp away while cooking your meat. Have I had better steak? Sure, but the Rubes experience allows you to control the grilling. And that was something I'm not used to coming from PA. An interesting concept. Only ding - prices should be listed when they show you all the meats. Amy was our server, and was great. They have a full bar. I would like to visit again, but I would like to try some other Des Moines steakhouses first.

For those who scawf at the idea of having to grill it yourself, simle just stay away. I went here on a sunday evening for a private holiday party for my girlfriends job at a doctors office. One of the first things you will notice is that the place is huge. It easily fit the few hundred people at the event. While we only had a choice of 5 or six things it the full menu listed much more included chicken, steaks, and even a grilled lobster tail special. The 8oz new york strip that i had been given had a great marbling throughout with little fat on the edges. Though not really experienced cooking steak on a grill ( i usually use a cast iron skillet at home) i managed to cook it perfectly medium rare. what i noticed though was that this steak was melt in your mouth tender. I must say that it was probably better than the steaks I usually get from Fareway Grocery. They had your typical steakhouse sides that were nothing special, beans, baked potato and salad bar that didn't disappoint. Two things really impressed me about the service. First, even though no vegetarian option was given by the party hosts upon hearing that my girlfriend didn't eat meat the manager or perhaps one of the owners put together a cast iron skillet full of fresh vegetables and even through in some white wine. The second thing was the owner realizing that i couldn't find the beverage i was looking for. I had seen someone with a fat tire earlier and he mentioned they had it on tap. i waited for a few minutes for the tap to be fixed (it was foaming up something fierce) so he was only able to bring me out half a glass (no biggey cause it was free) and he said that he would get me a full glass once the keg settled. a few minutes later he found me in the packed restaurant at the very opposite end of the bar he was pouring from. consider the place probably had 300 people in it showed that he had to go to some work to get me that beer.

The place is a dump, the service is lousy, it's incredibly loud, it's expensive, the salad bar and side dishes are a joke. But, it's some of the best steak in the country.

Rube's is a really fun place to eat! Great cuts of meat and such a fun experience. Grilling my own steak was the best part, although it did get really smoky in the grilling room, and my clothes and hair smelled horrible after grilling. The salad bar was decent...not a huge fan of the iceburg lettuce. Higher class would be nice to go with the dining experience.

Now, if I were writing just about my steak the rating would be 4 to 5 stars, but alas, even though Rubes has a GREAT steak, there is more to a meal than just the meat. First, while it is novel to cook your own steak, it is also a greasy smoky affair. The smell of charcoal and grilled meat hung on my clothes and hair long after we had left, reminding me of how my clothing smelled of smoke before there were smoke-free hotel rooms! Then there is the salad bar. Seriously? Iceberg lettuce, canned pineapple and cottage cheese? I felt like I was back in a middle school cafeteria! The potato station was pretty pedestrian as well and I had to laugh that while the baked potatoes were good, they were accompanied by little tubs of fake margarine and sour cream in small tubes! The wait staff were informative and attentive. Go for the steak and you won't be disappointed. Expect a more well rounded meal and forget it.
