Loved it. Great "local place" atmosphere but with a sophisticated food and drink menu. Unpretentious in every way. Great service. Great food. Great value. A pretty limited selection of food but still couldn't decide what to order. Not a place or a menu for kids.

Food was very good. Service was quite nice. Price was a tiny bit much but I was overall very impressed. I will be back for happy hour some time.

I am guilty of loving this location way more then the one near downtown! My friends and I came here after a bridal shower for a quick bite to eat and wine of course. I didn't order wine but I did order the Cheese Flight, which was amazing! I can not wait to come back and have it again. Whatever jam they put on the board was so good. I ended up splitting the Chocolate Torte with a friend and immediately regretted my decision to share. Service wasn't bad at all and our waitress was very attentive and let people have some samples of wine they weren't sure of. I will be coming back here again to try what else they have to offer.

Decent atmosphere. Good wine selection. Food needs a little work. I had crab cakes as an entree, my husband had the shrimp Diablo. The crab cakes were fine. Shrimp Diablo has a really good and flavorful sauce, but pasta and shrimp both were a bit undercooked. Hopefully it was just an off night. We've had excellent food at the other Louie's location so we'll be back to try again.

The food was good. The atmosphere was not. They shoved in to many tables for anyone to be comfortable. The wait staff was adequate. No complaints but she didn't make it a better experience. I recommend going to dish before heading here. At least dish has live music. If you are going to spend this much money at least you feel better about it because you are comfortable and listening to great music. I won't be going back. I would also skip this and go to the draught house 3 doors down if I am nearby and hungry.

This was my first time to a Louie's Wine Dive. I met my friend for a birthday brunch at 10AM. There was plenty of availability, which is always great. I like the decor. The upside down tiles make for an interesting ceiling, and I really like their plush black booths. I didn't sit in them, but I want to. I ordered the bottomless mimosas for $12 and the French toast for $9. The mimosas appeared to be heavy on the juice and not the bubbly so I started requesting mine with just a splash of juice. I wanted to try the grapefruit juice one but they ran out... At 10AM... On brunch Sunday. No biggie. It seemed to take forever between mimosa refills. Maybe I was drinking too fast? Maybe there was only one server? The French toast was kind of puny. The menu boasts of cinnamon cream cheese which was definitely there but... Drowned out by the syrup. The syrup is heavy. I would suggest trying it without first. Full disclosure, I was not impressed. I could have drove .25 miles down the road to Hyvee and paid less for more. One if my friends got the eggs Benedict which looked pretty amazing. Although I wasn't totally thrilled with the French toast I would like to come back to give the dinner menu a try.

I have been to Louie's in Des Moines too and I have only been to this location once but I found it to be a way better experience than the one in the city. After my experiences at the other location, I vowed never to go to this location. A work function changed that and I am glad it did. Best part about going for a work function is you get to try a ton of different stuff. For starters we sampled the fig flat bread pizza, chicken pesto pizza, fried cheese and lobster poutine. All were fantastic my favorite was the fig flatbread. Dinner went with the Waukee Meltdown based on serves recommendation. She was spot on and it was a great chose. Our server is really want made for such a pleasant experience, she knew her wines and could point out her favored dishes. Wished I had grabbed her name as she deserves her just recognition. I will go back to this location.

My girlfriend and I tried this place out on Saturday, Valentine's day 2015. We liked the Louie's Wine Dive on University, so we thought we might like this one. Well, that and the fact that I was a dumbass and didn't make reservations to eat anywhere on Valentine's day, and I thought this place might not be that busy since its new and kind of on the outer edge of the Des Moines suburbs. Anywho, got there around 6:40 pm, found out there was a 25 minute wait, but looked up and saw that there were two open spots at the bar. Before we sat down at the bar, we were debating on if we should just have a drink at the bar and wait for a table to open or just eat at the bar. After we sat down we decided to eat at the bar, which turned out to be a good decision. Besides that the bar we were sitting at had way more room for plates and elbows than a normal restaurant bar, we were facing the cooking staff going full force on V-day. My girlfriend and I like watching cooking shows, so seeing the cooking staff go at it was as good as it gets in a sense that you feel like you are in the action, but don't have to do dishes afterwards. Unlike most of the cooking shows we watch, the staff worked very smoothly and no drama ensued in the cooking area...damn it. We had a female bartender that was waiting on us. She didn't really seem too excited to be working (In my made up mind story it was because she was missing her true love on V-day), but she wasn't mean or anything. The manager of the place came over and talked to us a couple times and he was very friendly. We ordered the flat bread as an appetizer, which was good. For our main courses, we got shrimp and grits and a fish dish that I cannot remember the name of. The shrimp and grits was only so so, and the fish was pretty good. The food wasn't anything amazing, but certainly not bad. The atmosphere of the restaurant/bar was very nice. This place seems like a good place to take a date, or for a group of girls to get together and catch up.

Best brunch in Des Moines. Very diverse brunch menu with lots of options. Would recommend the breakfast burger. Trip to Jalisco cocktail was excellent. Nice patio.

Attention 'fine dining' restaurants in the Des Moines metro: Louie's has your number! Service: spot on. Not pushy, good recommendations. We had four dishes at my table, and we all sampled each other's. Fish and Chips: I typically drown mine in malt vinegar, not this time. The batter was light and tasty, the chips (fries) had Parmesan and seasoning on them. Very tasty. The side was a cole slaw with Brussels sprouts, different, yet very good. The champion of this dish was the house-made tartar sauce. An explosion of flavor (dill amongst others) greeted me. Best fish and chips in the metro, blowing the competition away. Pesto Chicken Flatbread: the basil and pesto were the major players in this dish. The cracker crust did nothing to temper the great flavors. Could have used some fresh, cold, mozzarella on top, but other than that, it was great. Lobster Poutin: I should have gotten this. A phenomenal take on a traditional French Canadian dish. Super tasty, and very filling. Could be moved off the appetizer menu and onto the main menu. Waukee Meltdown: a cod flatbread with refined flavors, each bite leaves you with different flavors. Fresh, yet homey, a great lunch meal. Tres Leches: a great dessert with small cakes with vanilla, nutmeg, cinnamon, and coconut. Although the portion is small for four people, but a good finish to a great night. If you're a fan of the Greenbriar, it's time to step up to flavor in a casual atmosphere at a great price with Louie's in Waukee.

The service was good and the atmosphere was fine however the food was not. My gnocchi was overcooked, burned in fact, and my guests steak was undercooked to the point of being nearly raw... They did fix the steak however did not even offer to comp the meal or offer a dessert... and the prices do not reflect the quality that you would expect.

I do not care for the location on University. But this one seems a lot better, at least from my experience on the patio a few nights back. Good service, good appetizers. I highly recommend the patio for drinks and heavy appetizers. It was just a lot better than my time at the other location, where it is dark and crowded.

I love Louis Wine Dive on 42nd street and University, it's closer to where I live, but I was out by WDM and decided to try the new location, super cute love the new space, food just as amazing, I had crab cakes and Thai beef ribs and the service at this new location was a lot better then the other location I can go there at times have sit and wait for over 15 minutes without be serviced or talked to on a slow night which is a huge turn off but at this location I was greeted right away sat at the bar and had good conversation with the bartender who was also my waiter, he made my drink a little strong but he fixed it and it was perfect. I'm all about amazing food and great service and I got both!

We had Sunday brunch at Louie's this morning and the food was delicious. Our table had the breakfast pizza, drunken French toast, and one of the eggs Benedict dishes and it was all very good. The service, however, was not good. Our server didn't ask if we wanted anything to drink, we had to request our drinks when we ordered food. Never offered us another drink and we had to ask for more water. We couldn't find her when we wanted to ask for butter for my daughter's biscuit. The kitchen was also super slow, and we couldn't understand why since they weren't busy. In a nutshell, yummy food but be prepared to sit and wait for it.

Tried it for the first time tonight and give it an overall grade of B-. Service-It was slow and our waiter seemed really nervous. The place just opened so this will probably work itself out. Drinks-Nice selection of wines and beer. Liked all we tried. Atmosphere: The place had an interesting decor but it was loud, loud loud. Had to yell across the table to be heard. Food: I had a burger (Sinatra) and it was really good and the salad that came with it was excellent. My wife had the Emily's Apple Harvest Salad and she was not impressed and thought it was pretty tasteless. We shared the chocolate chip cookie dessert which was pretty good. Price: Seemed a little high for the atmosphere and quality. Overall we had a nice time, but probably won't go rushing back. Maybe we will let them get a couple more months under their belt and give it one more try.

This place just opened and it was packed (which we totally expected and it wasn't a big deal). Large bar, but not many tables. I really expected it to be bigger. Great wine list, fantastic food and attentive service. We just had appetizers, and I recommend the lobster poutine and squeaky cheese to everyone! My only complaint is that it was very hot sitting at the bar near the grill. Be ready to wait for a table, not kid-friendly. But I'll be back!
