Morg’s Menu

We were in town for a wedding, and we had an opportunity to eat at Morg's. It was simply bliss. I don't know if I'll ever be back in Waterloo, but I'm glad we a chance to try their food.

Yes they recently raised their prices, but no matter they are still wicked awesome. A true greasy spoon.

Old school, baby. Old school. Real deal diner with basic breakfast food, the grill by the counter, waitresses that won't put up with your crap, and patrons who are actually engaging in conversation instead of staring at their phones. I'm glad I got up early to check it out because this place gets crowded and it's not very big. I had the basic bacon, eggs, and hasbrowns breakfast and it was perfect. I saw the B & G walk by a couple of times and that looked delicious too. Take your cash and a big appetite and you'll leave happy.

Food is pretty standard fare but the draw here is the quantity. I ordered a pecan pancake and balked a little at the price until I saw it. Kid you not, it was at least 12 inches in diameter and 3/4 inch thick and full of pecans. I had to take a break to finish it. My son ordered a 1/2 pound cheeseburger and it was similarly huge. He had to cut it up into sections to eat it. If you go here, be starving or take a tableful of friends to share the food.

Great service, comfortable seating and good Denver omelette! Lunch rush can be intense but arriving before noon helps the wait time. Don't order anything but breakfast!

They have excellent food. It is like a 60's diner! I always get hash browns, bacon, toast, and scrambled eggs, which is a combo of some sort. The portions are excellent size, so come hungry. I think the prices are a little high for this establishment. However, service is generally pretty good. There is a counter and besides that, there is only about 10 booths so there might be a wait at sometimes. It is also worth nothing that they close at 1 on the weekdays. I am giving it 4 out of 5 because they are cash only, so they do not accept credit and debit cards, and I think that is really inconvenient because I, like most people, never carry cash, just my credit card.

  • Rachel D.

Hands down, best pancakes ever. They are gigantic, though. I would share one of you can. It's one of those old-school diners that the cooks work right behind the counter in front of you. It's one of those places that all the locals know about, so you know it's good.

Fantastic pancakes! Don't forget to get peanut butter pie. Get there early and have cash on hand

Well... I will say I was very impressed with the service here. The menu was simple and not over complicated. This is a hole in the wall greasy spoon dinner. But if you are wanting a real meal and not the typical crap food and service you would receive at a chain than this is the spot. I ordered the pancake with sausage and eggs. "Cake with meat and eggs" it was served quickly even though the restruant was full of patrons and served with piping hot syrup (yummy) . The food was amazing. I cannot say enough about the service and food here... warning cash only

    (5)
  • Al R.

Huge plate-sized pancakes with warm syrup...yummy! The wife is the patty melt queen and she said theirs is a winner. Kids loved their meals. Quick, quality service. The décor is dive-worthy, but we loved it. Overall a successful lunch stop at a local joint while passing through. A winner if you like these kinds of places. Beware of their cash only policy.

  • Darrin J.

My wife and I had the pancakes, and we were amazed at the size . They were bigger than our heads! They were perfectly cooked...not oily and well spiced. My wife had the pecan pancake, and it was loaded with pecans. She loved it. I got a sausage patty with mine, and it tasted homemade, and it was as big as a quarter pounder. On top of all that, the service was excellent, and we had a great morning there. Big portions, good prices, and great food. Snowy morning, but the place was packed.

Sooo yummy! Everyone needs to try this place once! It's authentic 50s diner and food. Huge portions and reasonably price definitely will have leftovers!! Only downside is it is small so you may have to wait awhile on weekends!

    (5)
  • Steve S.

Small, greasy/spoon style, lost in the 50's (not the fake ones) diner. Stick to breakfast and you will be happy. The pancakes are as huge as every review says and I know they are made in small batches. (Home made) the hash browns are also shredded here. They also make their syrup the way some mom's used to with brown sugar. It is generally busy on the weekends and there's not much for waiting area. ... And I would not recommend bringing a large party (over 6) and sitting together. Prices are incredibly reasonable and portions are quite large. I have become a regular and the waitstaff treats even the new visitors like family. I would recommend this as a must/stop if you are in town and a breakfast lover. Make sure to get a pancake.

Had a bad experience on today at Morg's my wife and I waited for a table to be cleaned and they never did clean it after we sat at the dirty table for almost 5 minutes so I went home and made some pancakes bigger and better than Morg's

Extremely generous portions, very cheap and fast, friendly service! I wanted to go to a "local's" place for breakfast while visiting to work with KBBG-FM 88.1 and this place was exactly what I was looking for. I had Chicken fried steak for breakfast because I love the smell of gravy in the morning. I agreed to adding cheese and onions to the "in-house" shredded hash browns. I thought the perfectly visible squares of melted American cheese were amusing. We also had eggs over-medium and corned beef hash. Everything was great! I loved the "No Swearing" signs at Morg's too!

  • Larry R.

Was in town with the family for a wrestling tournament and found this place for breakfast. All I can say is....wow! Great old diner with great food and service. I had the corned beef hash and eggs..excellent. Son had the huge pancake with pecans...excellent!!! Service outstanding!!! Coming back in a few months for another tournament and this place is on the list a "must do". Thanks Morg's!

Tried out Morgs after several recommendations. I was sort of disappointed. The food is super greasy and my omelette was burnt. The pancake was good and service was ok. It's cash only. The place is literally a 60's diner. It hasn't been updated since then. It's like stepping back in time. So, I guess that's kind of cool. I'm glad I tried it, but I probably won't be back.

  • Ayesha S.

I asked if I could kiss the cook at the end of my meal. A great small diner with stools to watch the magic happen. Service was lovely, and the food was not just your regular omelet breakfast. If there is a wait, you should wait. If I ever find myself in this town again, this would be an absolute must. I wish I hadn't found it on my way out of town or I would have eaten there more than once! YUM.

I had a business lunch meeting here. I live in Waterloo and had never heard of it. It was a full house at lunch, which is a good indication of how good it is. Service was fast, friendly, and they got all orders right the first time, despite the high traffic. Saw huge pancakes and friendly cook banter. These gals enjoy what they do and it shows. Definitely will be back.

If a healthy breakfast is what you're after, keep on looking. If awesome diner breakfast is what you're after, grab your place in the waiting line and ignore how much butter is being used. The food is delicious, the coffee is hot and refilled regularly, and the food is all made in front of your face at the in dinning room kitchen. The place is small, so on the weekends there may be a wait, but it's worth it. If you like pecans at all get either a pecan pancake or a pecan roll, they are superb, no skimping on the nuts, if you opt for the pancake only get one, I'm not sure Takeru Kobayashi could finish two.

I haven't been to this place for about 50 years but wanted to have a great meal while visiting my place of birth. Ratings looked good so I took my brother and sister-in-law out for breakfast here to just see if the food was as good as the reviews and as good as I have learned to expect in my new home of Portland, OR. I ordered a pancake and was impressed as it flopped over the sides of the plate. WOW. The best hotcake I have ever had. The reviews are correct. You must order the pancakes. They melted in my mouth and I wanted more. The waitress was very friendly, helpful, and offered lots of information regarding the history of the little food counter restaurant. I also ordered a half order of biscuits and gravy as I believe every good breakfast location must be able to make good gravy and biscuits. Fail. The gravy tasted pretty much out of a box or a mix. One would think that in the middle of farm and pork country one could make some homemade gravy but don't expect that here. Stick to the pancakes.

Great hospitality, atmosphere and food! My husband enjoyed his patty melt, my son wanted to order another grilled cheese, my HUGE pancake was so tasty and my daughter ordered the Hawaiian omelet w cheesy hash browns. My daughter is a picky eater and she made a pretty good dent in her huge portion of goodness:)

Best diner in Waterloo! They give generous portions and the don't charge a lot of money.

  • Bradford H.

Wow! I had breakfast here this morning... It was the country omelet (with sausage, green peppers, cheese, mushrooms, etc.) and hash browns (with cheese, onions, green peppers) on the side. Unlike many omelets, this one had all the toppings mixed through the eggs in addition to being added inside. The result was amazing - tons of the good stuff and lots of flavor in every bite. The service was great- fast, friendly, and accommodating. The interior is a charming 1950s style diner. It's a little more expensive than the 1950s... An omelet with hash browns and a soda will cost around eleven bucks. It's well worth it. Morg's is a great value for the money. The portions are huge and the food is extremely tasty. Thanks to the folks on Yelp for helpful, accurate reviews. This is definitely a "must visit" if you are passing through this area. I can't wait to come back and try out the pecan pancake. I saw one go out and it looked like the size of a 12" pizza pan. Yum. One piece of advice - go early. This place fills up fast.

As everyone's mentioned, you'll probably have to wait. But, damn, is it worth it. Morg's is everything a diner breakfast should be - big, cheap, comfortable, and delicious. We went twice - My girlfriend and I each had a different omelet each time with big, cheesy piles of hash browns and toast included. The first time we went, she ordered a pancake because she'd read that they're known for them - big mistake. It was delicious, but she didn't get four bites into it after finishing her heaping main dish before throwing in the towel. I got a little bit further - and I'm a big, hungry guy - but it beat the both of us. Delicious, but absolutely huge. We also split a cinnamon bun the second time we went, which was a great idea. They're clearly homemade and well worth the blow to your diet. We overheard a waitress telling another customer that most everything here is prepared in house. She said that they hand-shred their potatoes and even make their own syrup. After tasting both, I believe her. Morg's nails the diner breakfast perfectly, and we wished we could take it with us when we left town. They also have a parking lot, for what that's worth. There's also an ATM about half a block away (turn right outside of the front door), just in case you forget to bring cash - no plastic is taken here.

I've spent many Sunday morning's at this teeny little diner, soaking up the previous night's alcohol consumption with their bangin' breakfast food. Go early, otherwise be prepared to wait until a booth or seat at the counter opens up. It's first come, first served. The booths are equipped with an old-school jukebox, that really does work if you put in a dime. The kitchen is open to the entire eating area, so you hear the cooks and wait staff banter back and forth, but that's what makes it feel like home. The menu is pretty standard breakfast items - french toast, eggs, home fries, omelet's, etc. but the portions they give you are HUGE considering the little you pay. My favorite has to be the pancakes, they are as big as a dinner plate so don't be greedy and order more than one. Trust me when I say, one pancake is enough. They give you hot syrup to drown your ginormous cake in, you'll need lots of it as they are very dense and thick. A couple other stand outs are their cinnamon rolls - so thick with cinnamon and the ooey-gooey frosting, I was surprised when they gave me a side of butter to go with it? Where was I going to put that? The chicken fried steak is another favorite morning belly buster, I can never finish it but I dare you to try. This place is about as diner as it gets in Iowa, and it sure beats the usual Perkins or IHOP. Just remember to tip the cook and bring cash, they don't take cards here.

The best pancakes in the Cedar Vally that I have found thus far - they are bigger than your head! I love love love the food, but one star lost to the limited seating (I have usually had to wait in excess of half an hour to get a seat) and the cash-only policy - but don't let those scare you off! Their food is totally worth the wait!
