Great restaurant in a very small Iowa town. Breakfast is a choice of three casseroles and lots of locally baked goods. Good coffee selection. Lunch is mostly (very good) sandwiches and salads, with soup, etc. Dinner is more substantial. Definitely aimed at locals in the Cedar Rapids/Iowa City, but visitors will feel welcome I think.

Wonderful atmosphere and delicious food! It gets crowded during lunch and dinner on the weekend. Definitely give it a try if you're in the area!

Went on the recommendation of a friend. The cheesecake was excellent as was the crab bisque. Worthy of the detour.

I love the old building and how they've decorated with antique furnishings. They serve homemade dishes such as a breakfast casserole that was very good today. They use residential sized pans so everything looks like it's from a church supper. Friendly atmosphere and service. Right on the main drag in beautiful downtown Swisher, Kava House is a real community asset. Free Wi-Fi too.

Swisher has about 1000 people, so for them to have a local cafe like this is really special. The food is absolutely great with a lot of variety. With all the people coming and going through the front doors while we were there, the place really showed off its local support. Everyone seemed to know each other.

I came here with my coworkers for lunch one day. I was surprised how packed it was seeing how it seemed to be located in the middle of nowhere. The environment of this joint reminds me of a grandmother's kitchen: warm and inviting with delicious scents wafting in the air. An eclectic array of framed artwork and wooden knick knacks were displayed throughout the seating area. I think people go there more for the coffee and pastries, but since we went for lunch, my grumbling stomach demanded a substantial meal. I ordered the Reuben sandwich, which turned out to be a great choice. The beef, cheese, and sauerkraut combo seemed to melt in my mouth while the buttered and lightly toasted bread added a crunch to the mix. The meal also came with a choice of pasta salad or fruit, which was a plus.

Kava House is a great place to meet a friend for lunch or grab a coffee on the road! The food is fresh and well made, the staff is helpful and friendly and the desserts, ohhhhhhh the desserts - so good!! My daughter loves to get the special mini ice cream cone :) Gets busy around lunch and on Saturdays, but worth the wait anytime!

I used to live in Houston and I've eaten at some of the best restaurants in the world, but Kava House is my choice in the Cedar Rapids area! The homemade food is amazing and the atmosphere sends you back in time. Love the desserts, but if you come on a Saturday night, there is a specialty meal you can order that satisfies anyone hungry after a day of chores. If you are from Iowa, it's worth the drive to dine in this establishment!

I was driving from Nebraska to Wisconsin after Thanksgiving, and on Sunday. It was a long ride and I needed a little caffeine pick me up and some time out of the car. I found Kava on my phone and noticed it was only about 3 minutes off the interstate. I stopped in only to find that it was closed on Sundays, but everyone was there hanging up Xmas decorations. They invited me in with the warmest of hearts. They didnt have coffee made, but someone generously made me an espresso and they gave me a pumpkin bar. They told me the cash register was off and even after many attempts to try to pay anyways, they didnt accept it. Stopping in at places like this, where you have warm loving business owners is one of the few treats of being on the road as much as I am. I was glowing for the last 5 hours of my drive. Thanks so much KAVA and have a lovely holiday season. Cant wait to drive through town next time.

I've lived in Iowa (City) for 11 years now, and had never heard of this place. Today, a group of about 12 of us went to lunch here. The city seemed sleepy and quiet - but there was NO PARKING in the restaurant's lot. Or the next lot. I couldn't decide what to pay attention to, let alone order for lunch (the coffee smells good! 'And Bakery'? ICE CREAM!). I ordered the 1/2 Granny Gobbler sandwich (turkey, havarti, apples, apple butter) and 1/2 Cranberry Walnut Salad with Feta, and the price was really reasonable. I don't think I'm exaggerating when I say our group's order arrived *maybe* 15 minutes later (and mind you, the place was packed from wall to wall. Remember how I said there were 12 of us?). I think everyone's order was correct - *and* they were friendly. I can't wait to take my husband here. Regularly!

Adorably quaint location. The entire place smells heavenly, like coffee and baked goods. It's exactly what my version of heaven smells like. I've never had a dessert I didn't like here.

Great Breakfast. We had the pecan roll, banana muffin, cinnamon roll, and 3 meat breakfast casserole. All were served warm and the coffee and chai tea were very good. Great prices Great food. We'll be back.

No matter how I start this review I'm going to make myself sound like a Big-City Brat right out of the gate. Swisher, Iowa. Can't tell you all that much about it. Wikipedia it, if you are so inclined. My observations? Small. Very very small. My PR for a one mile run is 7 minutes 9 seconds. I think I could run the entire perimeter of this town in less time. There was a miniscule town "grocery", a car repair place operated out of a barn (a very cool old barn, actually), a 20 x 20 structure resembling Hansel and Gretel's cottage posing as the town's salon, and then......Kava Cafe. It looks as though it was the town's general store at one time. Absolutely totally fantastically cozy, cute, warm and inviting inside. I love this kind of decor: old, beautiful wood, crown molding, antique lighting, and decorated tastefully and according to the period. Not cluttered and thoughtless. We were given menus and ordered at the counter. I spotted the Italian sodas they offered and when I asked for cherry, the woman taking my order whispered, "Have you ever tried it with a little half-and-half?" I must have had a look like, "Um - what?" because she told me if I didn't like it she would give me just plain cherry. Readers: have you ever tried something like this? I am like, totally sheltered or something? It was the most fantastic beverage I've had for awhile - and that includes some cocktails I've had recently, so you know I mean business. I ordered the Turkey in the Garden sandwich that came with a side of pasta salad - heavenly. Fresh bread, crisp veggies, yummy pesto, and moist turkey. My husband ordered grilled cheese on sourdough and enjoyed it very much. Even he commented on the pasta salad - it was indeed fantastic. What a suprising, unique and wonderful experience. I look forward to returning when I'm back in Iowa. If you're in the area, definitely check it out! But....that's kinda the thing....you most likely will NOT be in the area.......which is a shame.
