We have had the , fortunate or unfortunate, ability to experience McDonalds all over the U.S . This one is exceptional. The burgers are the actual size of the burger you expect. Not a half dollar sized burger on a smashed over sized bun. The burgers are always very good . They also have no problem making a burger other way you want it..they don't pretend to be brain dead and finally give you the wrong order.
We Dined In on our way back to Des Moines and our customer experience was exceptional. Patty our server was a model for excellent customer service!!! She went out of her way to fine a happy meal toy that my son saw and wanted. Then delivered some coloring books to our table, which was totally unexpected. The restaurant was clean and so were the restrooms; that is a big deal for a traveler with two young children. Thank you again.
Like I said in my tip that the bathroom kind of dirty and some of the staff taking break during busy hour. No smiles either.

Los Altos Mexican Restaurant

Reviews:
For my third and fourth visits to Los Altos, I was with Bro J. We needed some lunch and while bemoaning the fact that Los Compadres is no longer there, I was encouraged by the huevos con chorizo I had enjoyed a couple of weeks earlier. Besides, it really was not much of a choice, since we needed a Mexican lunch. I fully recognize that Los Altos does not try to be a taqueria, which is what we would prefer, but I am finding that this is one of those cookie cutter Mexican places that also has some pretty good things if you have the patience to find them. You just won't find lengua or cabeza. Between us we ordered tacos de carne asada and chile verde with pork. These were very good plates. The carne asada was salted and seasoned nicely and the taco plates that they do have are accompanied by the condiments on the side. This is worth mentioning because I don't want a lot of raw onion on my tacos and at Los Altos, you can use as much or as little as you want because the cilantro and onion are not pre-mixed. But even cooler is that I do like grilled onions and the carne asada came with well grilled onions. They were not just softened, but were carmalized perfectly and we ate them all. Depending on which taco plate you get, you will get a tomatillo based salsa verde or a dried chile based salsa roja. Both are very good sauces for the tacos. In addition you get a cup of pico de gallo and a well flavored cup of frijoles charros. The pork with salsa verde was also excellent. The pork had been roasted and shredded, so there were some of the nice outside crispy bits included. It was moist and well seasoned. The salsa verde was clearly homemade and complimented the pork well. I order pork in salsa verde or carnitas with green sauce often in Mexican restaurants. This presentation was one of the better that I have had and I will certainly order again. The next day we returned and repeated the tacos de carne asada and this time had a plate of tacos al pastor. Again, these are worth getting. While I don't expect them to slice this pork from a trompo in the kitchen and grill it, the meat was seasoned nicely, grilled and served with grilled pineapple. This whole experience was a pleasant surprise. So while some of you are with me moaning about the demise of Los Compadres, don't give up on Los Altos completely. I can certainly recommend: Huevos con chorizo - ask for some chiles torreados and either the red or green sauce to accompany Tacos de carne asada Tacos al pastor Chile verde with pork Or just a big bowl of frijoles charros. I cannot recommend the chiles rellenos. On the first day of this two day visit, I had a brain freeze and absent mindedly ordered chilles rellenos instead of chiles torreados. My screw-up afforded us an opportunity to sample these and I can warn you off making the same mistake. They are not made from chiles poblanos. The chiles themselves are tough and flavorless. The red chile sauce is not something that I would want on any dish. Although it looks very good, the chile flavor is weak and it has some cumin, leading you to say "Tex-Mex". I'm afraid to order Chile Colorado because of this sauce. The final failure on this dish is the disgusting runny processed white Cheese-Whiz that they are stuffed with. As I said at the outset, you have to work your way through this menu, to learn what they do well and what to avoid. We found enough to recommend it. Stay out of the food designed for Middle-Westerners and you may find some gems. Avoid anything with that horrible white cheese. One idiosyncrasy on the menu is that dishes that you associate with one species of meat, will be offered with several. For example, chile verde is normally pork. They offer it with chicken, beef or pork. A better example is tacos al pastor. This is definitely always and only pork, yet they offer it with the same three meat choice. A little weird. I am adding a star based on my last three meals there and bolstered by the thoughtful way they serve the taco plates and the excellent pork verde.
I was very sad to see Taqueria Los Compadres which occupied this location previous go. I'm typically not a big fan of "strip mall" Mexican foods that are smothered in cheeses, sour cream and enchilada sauces. I am very pleased to say that even with the loss of a personal favorites from the previous incarnation here, the tortas, this place left me very pleased with the depth of menu and the variety of things to choose from here. The menu here is massive, and I settled on one of my go to favorites the Tacos Al Pastor. They were very good, and my companions found some interesting items including some spinach enchiladas and seafood items. This place is has a lot of novelty in Story City so it was very busy and service was stretched thin. It did take a while to get drinks refilled. I will be anxious to return again. PS. They still have the Mexican wonder-beverage known as horchata here. Make sure to try it on your visit!
Love this place!! The staff is very friendly and accommodating. Burritos are excellent and filling. Mostly I love their hot salsa they offer with their chips. I recommend the fajitas and tamales! Wish they would offer delivery! !

This place has changed owners and you can already tell the difference. Employees are friendlier, the place is cleaner, and best of all it's faster! If I were you, I'd give it another try.
In my life, which has been long and well travelled, I didn't think it was possible to find a DQ which should be shuttered. I have now! This is the most pathetic excuse for a location serving ice cream and desserts! First off the interior of the restaurant is scary and pathetic. I think they last remodeled when the Brady Bunch was a hit on tv in the '70's. When I ordered 2 ice cream treats, the amount at the register came up about $2.50 more than the correct amount. The kid (and I mean kid, since I don't think he had high school math yet), told me the register is always right and that's the amount. When I tried to work the numbers backward for him, he just kept saying this is what the machine states...and I thought Iowa was one of those good school states.
Place was filthy. Garbage overflowing, bathroom sink dirty, employees somewhat indifferent . Never go back.

New location was awful. Got the fajitas wrap and it was awful! It was chicken with lettuce and salsa and cheese.... not much of a fajita.... fries were cold and greasy and service was miserable
I went to the new location in the old happy chef. Service was something to be desired. Food was not anything to brag about either. I hope that they can get it together in the new location.
The Royal Cafe is the type of cafe that you'll find throughout small-town America. Family owned and friendly and affordable. This is the best place in Story City to get breakfast, which they serve all-day. The first meal of the day is usually the purpose for our visits but they have a large menu, featuring American favorites like burgers and chicken. The Royal Cafe also has surprisingly good pizzas, that are in league with the best in town. The Royal Cafe is located below a retirement home, so the patrons tend to lean to a specific demographic. The foods featured on their brunch buffets tend to be directed at these patrons. I would steer clear of their brunch buffet. I have found it to be very bland, but they have some nice desserts.
