There is only one person working in the small shack. You can either sit outside or go through drive through. This place is great to stop at for little snacks and my food was great from here.

Their pastries are divine! And the staff is so friendly. You can see why they are always packed
I love going to Carroll's. Paul and Colleen make everything from scratch. It is not only tasty, but their friendly service is just so wonderful. I was introduced by my husband and mother in law shortly after moving here. My husband and kids remember fondly walking over from the old Middle School before class or at lunch for a treat. My favorites treats are the butterdej and Oh Boy and they have a daily coffee special that is worth two punches on their loyalty card.
I love Carroll's. Always have and always will. While the elimination of the lunch menu is quite sad, I'll still happily stop in often for a peanut butter nut cluster with chocolate. Carroll's sells the second best doughnut I've ever experienced and I'm not sure I can celebrate an event in Spencer without some cake. Bailey's cake is a family favorite. This bakery is cute, friendly, homey and perfectly small town. They make ordering for delivery pretty easy, too!

Great Prime Rib, Good crab legs, Great Mushroom Caps (appetizer), Walleye Cheeks (appetizer), Good Salad Bar, Great Wine (Innspiration Vines), and Great service and atmosphere. I'll be back and will bring people visiting town here to enjoy the great food from this local place.
Attentive staff, corn fed beef not grass fed, short hours. Decent for a stop and try. Horseradish not creamy and nothing special - nothing to write home about
The prime rib was incredibly delicious! The salad bar rocked. The decor is dated, but it felt very 'Iowa', too.

Family Table Restaurant

Good old fashion service. Good place to bring your family and friends too. We are happy to have stopped by. ...Thank you LANGDON. ...if it wasn't for them folks out there we wouldn't have found this place.
So, expectations were low for family table, which met them handily. I say that in a good way. Typical standard breakfast date. You won't do better at Denny's but you won't do worse (and, there is no Denny's so you are stuck with family table ). I've only had breakfast here but if you feel like a sit down limited breakfast menu this is the place for you.
Friendly service, food was good but small portion size. Breakfast items seemed a bit high priced but everything else was not to bad.

Quick service. Nicely decorated. Theme music. Attentive staff and good food at decent prices. Would come back again if in the area.
Ok, since I moved to Iowa from Washington DC the one thing that I noticed was a lack of quality Italian Restaurants. I was excited when Napolis was opening in Spencer, so I made it a point to show up on opening night. There was no wait, but it was a little busy. The first thing that I noticed was the waitresses lack of knowledge of the menu. It was the first night and she appeared to be a first time waitress so I let it go that she had no idea what Calamari was or Tiramisu for that matter (more on that later). Looking at the menu, I noticed the high prices for a majority of the dishes (for Iowa). This (in a way) I liked because I assumed that my Seafood combo pasta dish (16.00) would be top notch.... I ordered the Calamari (6.95) as my appetizer and the waitress needed me to point it out on the menu so she could spell it. When the Calamari arrived she dropped 4-5 pieces on the floor and apologized but made no offer to replace those that dropped. I said nothing, but a top restaurant would replace them without so much as a gripe. My girlfriend and her daughter ordered the Fettuccini Alfredo with chicken (12.00). When their dishes arrived they had uneven portions on their plates and my Seafood combo was horrid with overcooked scallops and shrimp. All of the sauces were pretty good but the quality of the food just wasnt that good. While eating my food I observed an employee loading pre cooked pasta from a box sitting on the floor to a bowl with his bare hands. I've been in the restaurant business and although I dont find that all unusual... doing it from the floor with bare hands is a no no, especially in full sight of the customers. Waitress was terrible about refills and really clueless. I ordered Tiramisu for dessert and again she had no idea where it was. I showed her and she went back to the back 10 minutes later she came back and asked how everything was going (as if to give us a check). I said ok and inquired about the Tiramisu. She said she would check on it and just left. 10 minutes later (20 min since I ordered dessert) I had to flag her down again and asked where my dessert was and she replied "I'm not sure". I then said " It's frozen, isn't it?" She then replied "yes, I'm sorry". Furious at that point, I just asked for the check which took another 10 minutes. I payed and left. I had friends go yesterday and they said that they had a similiar experience. I must say that this was the worst Italian Restaurant that I have ever stepped in (and thats saying a lot). Just a little advice if you are headed to Spencer, cross that bridge and go to La Chiesa across the bridge. The extra cost is well worth it!
Not a five star rating at all. My entree, the seafood combo, was 4 stars but the salad was out of a bag, simply lettuce and olives, and the desert was not homemade but more likely store bought.

There's nothing like a cold root beer on a hot day. My son prefers a float and Gayle is in it for the ice cream. This A&W is conveniently located on the way out of Town, and after a Fall visit to Bogenrief or an enjoyable Fall frolic at the Clay County Fair.

Been here a few times and always had great service with a smile. They have West O beer on tap! Woooo I always get the grilled chicken salad which comes with lots of veggies other than lettuce. Dinner rolls are yummmm Update: Cuban sandwich is awesome.
One of the better places to eat in spencer. Good was good- typical applebees like fare, except I would rate it a little better than applebees. It is a good alternative to fast food, which seems to be one of the only options in town.
Ate here this past Friday, started off with an order of chicken nachos which arrived with my main entree when the nachos were suppose to be an appetizer. Nachos looked like they had been sitting under a warmer for about 30 min, chips were stale, cheese looked like plastic on top of stale chips. My burger how ever was ok bread was a little dry. Let's just say I will not be returning to this restaurant!!! Also forgot we were seated in a booth that still had food on the seats and table tops, apparently the table looked clean enough to whoever was suppose to be cleaning.

Was in town with my wife on business from California and we were looking for breakfast. There were only a few cafes listed on Yelp but we saw this place while driving through town and decided to stop. It is definitely the place where the locals get breakfast! Lots of older folks gathered for coffee and breakfast. Exactly what you would expect in a small farming community! My wife and I both had the Bargain Breakfast which was two huge pancakes, two eggs and bacon or sausage. It was about $9 I think and was plenty of food with the big pancakes (I had blueberry pancakes for an additional $1.25). Pancakes were the star of the show. As my wife said, they were some of the best pancakes she had ever had. Perfectly cooked and not too dense. If we were ever in town again we would almost certainly come back to see what the locals were up to!
Reading the other review we were excited to try their breakfast. We were late and made it for lunch. Our mistake. Completely empty except for one other regular. The waitress was sloppy and a little rude. The funny thing is she waited until she brought us our food before even getting the customer's, who was there before us, order. When another regular came in he ordered a BLT and the waitress told him they didn't have lettuce. Lettuce! The entire time two ladies in the kitchen were gossiping loudly. Our food was horrible. My husband's hot beef sandwich was sickeningly salty and my chili was obviously from a can because I tasted aluminum. It had no flavor, could have used the salt they dumped in my husband's dish. Too bad we'll never know if they had decent breakfast or not.

Too bad you can't give zero stars. A surly group of employees. No one seems happy there. Heaven forbid you need to ask for a fork. Also, if every table has a big sticker on it saying every meal is served with fresh cilantro, limes, and tomatoes "what makes Taco John's special" and you fail to send out the food with this then don't get pissy when the customer asks for a lime slice. Floors were dirty, this was midafternoon and business was slow. Food is downright gross tasting leaving an awful aftertaste in your mouth. Eat here at your own peril.
