Jaarsma Bakery

We have been getting treats here for as long as I remember (at least 20 years) both at the Farmers Market on Saturday in Des Moines and at the shop..my mom even seems to try to schedule a trip right before every Christmas so we can stock up for the holidays. Our favorites include: dutch letters, dutch spice cookies (frozen in particular!), and I didn't see them online but they are like little cakes with lemon or cranberry. Yum!
Unfortunately for other bakeries everywhere in the U.S., I always compare them to Jaarsma, and everybody else comes up short. I grew up just 17 miles from Pella, and this was our favorite place for pastries. As a baker myself, I revere Jaarsma goods. Their bread flour is ground in an actual windmill right there in Pella which was built in the Netherlands and brought over. It is a replica of the mills used in the Netherlands in 1847 which was the founding year of Pella. I don't think I've ever been there when I didn't have to stand in line, but that's a good thing. First, the excellent breads, cookies, and pastries are the reason for the long line -- the place is world famous and once people have been there, they keep coming back. Second, it gives you time to peruse what looks like 40 feet of bakery cases. It is a gastronomic delight! I stopped at a supposed traditional bakery in the Amanas to find only doughnuts, cinnamon rolls and a dozen different kinds of strudel. At Jaarsma, you won't find any of the crap you can get at any donut shop or supermarket, this is authentic, old-world pastry--cookies, almond cakes and many different kinds of almond pastry, and old world fruit and nut pastries. This is not a café, no seating, no coffee or tea. You get your pastries and go, but they package them up beautifully if you ask and make excellent gifts or just a treat or dessert for you and yours.
Quaint bakery, featuring mostly danishes and cookies and bread (don't expect donuts here although here were a few) and a few souveniers. Even the women in the Dutch caps were very quaint. I bought a carmel pastry and carmel kettlecorn. This is located downtown, no place to park an RV. I drove here in a rental car.

This is a nice restaurant for an upscale business meal or a nice date with the wife. Also have several TV's in the bar area. They offer very interesting foods and they are prepared very well. Very nice service and an enjoyable environment.
This is a fabulous restaurant for a dinner date. A hidden gem of the area. I love the atmosphere and highly recommend ordering the saganaki and yell "opa" I got the beef tender and it was excellent, the food is fantastic. I love the house salad dressing. The portions are excellent. Also got the salmon with the dill sauce, absolutely amazing. If you are in the area I highly recommend and don't forget to get a Founders angry bastard beer, excellent. Dessert is amazing also, so many choices you can't go wrong.
Omg! Had the duck...a medallion sliced breast in a a wine and mushroom sauce. Try it! The presentation is attractive with rice and mixed fresh greens. I am impressed enough to have dessert...baklava!

This is an excellent stop if in Pella, Iowa! The Greek Gyro platter is outstanding!! The service is very good as well. I met a couple who always gets George's Special Pizza. The wife said that is the best pizza ever!! It definitely looked GOOD!! A solid choice when in Pella and worth the trip if close! A SOLID 5 star!?
I'm a huge fan of pizza places in college towns, and this is one that hits the spot. George's has a friendly staff, delicious pizza (made even more delicious if you dip it in Ranch dressing -- YUM!), and is affordable. Bonus soft serve cones at the exit, so you can indulge your sweet tooth after you've gotten your pizza fix. We got meat lover's when I was here most recently, and it was super tasty. Not too much sauce, crust just the right thickness and consistency (doughy, but not big and filling), and melty cheese that got crispy and bubbly right where it met the crust. The pizza is served bubbling hot, but you can't help yourself from taking a bite, burning your mouth, and taking another bite - it's that good. The next time you're in Pella, make time for a stop at George's -- you won't be disappointed :)
Good, reliable hometown restaurant. The pizza is good, but the creamy seafood pasta is amazing. A lot of the wait staff have been there a long time and it shows. They are quick, know their stuff and always provide great service. Definitely give this place a try if you're in town!

I love the Smokey Row! Every time I'm in Iowa I have to have the cheeseburger chowder in a bread bowl as often as I can. They also have a great line of clothing which I have several shirts, sweatshirts and hats. Great choice of sweets as well. I don't drink coffee so can't speak to that. Love the atmosphere too. A gem. The location on the beautiful Pella town square only makes it even better.
I had no idea what I was walking into, but the outside was very inviting and the inside did not disappoint. Ordered the Tomato Basil Ravioli Soup in a bread bowl, Dutch Chocolate Mocha and the Andes Mint Pie. It was delicious :)
Cruising on 163, found you on yelp. Good tea & service.

thank goodness for yamato's! I love Japanese food, especially sushi. I'd probably give them 5 stars if they had a liquor license. I enjoy a nice sake with my dinner, which they don't have.
This place has something for everyone. Even rhe pickier pallets in our party enjoyed everything they ate. The staff was also incredibly friendly and accomodating.
Excellent. We were treated with great service and fresh food. Will dine here again. Who would have that Pella, Iowa would have an outstanding Japanese Steak House. We enjoyed several Rolls and I had the Bento Box, all very good.

Quaint little cafe in the middle of town. We were welcomed and seated as soon as we walked in. Very clean place and nicely decorated for the holidays. The biscuits and gravy was good but not the best we have ever had. However, the country fried steak was exceptionally delicious! It was crispy and with a great peppery gravy. Would definitely return here in the future as we see they have a Sunday brunch buffet!
Just ate "dinner" here while here for the festival. To say the least I am very underwhelmed. I ordered the Monte Cristo, what I got was a hoagie bun with grilled chicken, bacon, "white" cheese, and ham. Not at all a Monte Cristo, not even close. My friend ordered the "Union Club" sandwich, she received a toasted white bread sandwich with turkey cold cut, bacon, lettuce, and tomato; pretty standard but only two slices of bread and skimpy portions. A second friend ordered the Chicken Parmesan, he received some bland jarred sauce, over cooked spaghetti, and grilled chicken strips with the same "white" cheese. I'll skip the description of the fries... The waitress was flippant, unfriendly, and performed her duties at the least possible effort. James S.
We stopped here for lunch. I had the turkey wrap and my fiancée had the burger which was good too. I especially liked the turkey wrap since the wrap was closer in thickness to crepe. The service was fast and price was just right. We managed to get in and out in less than 30 minutes. I liked also getting a side salad substituted for fries. My fiancée had the rice and chicken soup.

Friendly service and fast. Regular like margaritas were tart but not too much so. Chips are fresh and salsa is more on the runny side which I love. Vulcan steak was excellent. Happy burritos were also good. We would definitely return.
So it seems this place has mixed reviews. It is a small Mexican place that you could find in any small town USA, but the staff is super friendly, food is pretty good, salsa is yummy... Yeah, if you're in Iowa and craving Mexican this is the place to go:) prices are low and service is good:)
good food, at good prices. the waitstaff is very friendly and helpful. who doesn't enjoy good Mexican food and s margarita?

Royal Amsterdam Hotel

My fiance and I booked the 'Weekend Getaway Package' (the one night option) as our Valentine's Day getaway. We were more than pleased with our stay! We set out to have a quaint, one day escape to check-out the Pella town square. The hotel has a wonderful location that walks out to great shops and modern eateries. Having worked in the hospitality industry for more than ten years, my number one expectation is good service. The Royal Amsterdam went over and beyond! Our check-in was personable, smooth and left us with no questions. Lucia checked us in and made us feel right at home. Our package included wine, chocolates, flowers, movie tickets and a gift certificate to the restaurant. The wine, chocolates, and flowers were waiting for us in the room and the rest was waiting for us at the front desk when we were ready to use them. The sparkling wine was delicious and the chocolates were local, which I loved! Our room was clean and quiet. The rooms aren't the most modern, but that's the feel of the whole hotel: historical charm. We had a microwave and mini-fridge, as well as a Jacuzzi tub and a large shower, as well as access to underground (heated) parking. We ate in the restaurant for dinner. It was more casual than we expected, but the food was home-style and delicious! We ordered the mussels for an appetizer. They were a little small in size, but tasted great. We both ordered steak and it was done perfectly. The side dishes were amazing (even after being reheated later the next day). They don't have a wine list, but do offer several varietals by the glass. Overall, I am extremely pleased with the Royal Amsterdam. We were looking for a quaint, historical setting where we could easily explore the area and have a relaxing weekend and found all of that here. The staff was incredible and accommodating in every way. One of the front desk ladies even went out of her way to find us some ibuprofen despite the fact that there wasn't actually a pantry! I give two thumbs up!
Smoked pork loin was tender but the sides were below average. It took FOREVER to get our food, refills and the check. There are better choices in Pella!
Here I sit at the Royal Amsterdam Hotel. Excuse me while I throw up in my mouth. Having been to Amsterdam, AND a real hotel, experience tells me that this place is neither. A quick cut to the chase. First off, apologies to anyone who must stay here. Secondly, stay at the Holiday Inn. Thirdly, eat at Kalderas, or bring your own. Sorry so crass. Hotel is beat up. Restaurant is lousy. My dog could serve up a better steak, nibble marks included. At least I would know where his mouth has been. This is the FIRST place I have ever visited which ONLY has house wine. My house, would NEVER serve this wine. Maybe a misspell, house whine?? Sorry folks. Avoid this place like a coughing anemic-looking skinny person with a face full of cold sores.
