I'm usually not a huge fan of Hardee's, but I was hungry and it was there. When I got home to eat it, to my surprise, it was probably the best fast food meal I had had in my life. I had the #1 combo, medium sized. I ate there all 3 days that I was in Muscatine, and each meal was just as good as the first.

Avenue Subs

Reviews:
Hadn't everyone else given this 5 stars, I'd probably have given it 4. But bottom line, the subs are excellent. Their sandwiches all have cute names and they serve two types of toppings, the works and the lite works. I'm sure they would accommodate special orders, but I felt like I'd get someone's nose out of joint if I veered from the preordained combinations of meat, cheese and toppings. Having said that, I've been in Muscatine 5 times and have had lunch at Avenue all 5 days. It's that good.
Great place for a freshly sliced sub! Had two subs for $10. They slice the meat and cheese right in front of you, bread is delicious as well. Highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a nice and fairly priced lunch. They also have a baked potato menu, would like to try that out next time.
Over the top sub shop. Not your Subway here. Fresh cut meat, bread and toppings Hopping place here. Must try! I will be back

I really meant to do a survey for the woman who helped us when we went in but I lost the receipt.... so I thought this was the next best thing... We went in right before closing on Tue. June 16th and we were helped by a very pleasant, friendly and funny Sara. She was amazing ...she made it seem like she really liked her job and was really trying to make sure we were happy with our salads and our sandwiches. She went above and beyond to make sure we were happy with our food and again even though it was near closing she was welcoming and kind. Thank you Sara for your service and our amazing food :)

El Olmito

Reviews:
Excellent food, mellow attitudes. It's the back of a bodega with tables, but clean and tasty. I'm a big fan of their Tortas, and both the Asada and the Carnitas are really good. Service is fast and the presentation is good. If you are a person who tastes based on how the building looks, you may have issues here, however you will be passing up a really solid Mexican restaurant with great food.
Typical hole in the wall place , so my expectations were high. Not much to look at. Most of the time these types of places that the locals eat at, not because of cleaver marketing, but because of the FOOD. Had two steak tacos and 2 Gorditas. The service was ok, the food was decent but not outstanding. I was hoping this would be one of those hidden local secrets, swing and a miss. I'm giving 3 Stars because it was average.
Ms T and I have spent a considerable number of nights back in Muscatine lately and finally had a chance to eat at a few of the local restaurants that we had not been able to try before. I had three meals at El Olmito and found here an excellent homestyle taqueria. Muscatine has at least four credible restaurants; El Olmito, El Allende, Las Lomas and Guadalajara. I have tried them all and rank them in the order given, but all are OK. I have not tried Restaurant Izalco. El Olmito is the real deal. I ate lunch here twice and both times had tacos. The lengua is excellent. It is actually shredded, rather than the usual cubed. Twice I had chorizo and egg tacos. They have a little tomato and chile in the eggs. Perfect. I also had one barbacoa (cheek) and it was delicious, tender and flavorful. Top your tacos with one of two very good homemade sauces. The red version is dry toasted red chile and surprisingly is not vinegar based. The green has decent heat and consists of tomatillos and chiles jalapenos. Both are so good that I never know which to use on the tacos. I just wrote a less than glowing review for hugely popular and overrated Mission Taco Joint in St Louis. All I can say is, "They wish". Popularity and following the herd are no guarantee that you will find something good. For my one dinner here, I had a dinner of barbacoa (cheek). It is very rich and good but you can't let a little grease scare you. It came with shredded lettuce and rice. The serving was huge and I took a big serving home. So here is the deal on El Olmito. It is a little grocery with a few tables. Don't let any of that deter you. You won't get better, more honest and authentic tacos for hundreds of miles. This is comida casera. When we lived in Muscatine we bought groceries here and I don't think they had the menu and tables that they now have. We frequented El Zarape until Paul and Gloria sold it and then we were regulars at Imelda's. Both are long gone but we had a lot of good meals there with our kids. If I lived here again, I would be pretty happy with the selection of Mexican food and would try to rotate through El Allende, Las Lomas, Guadalajara and probably Izalco (Need to try it). I would reserve a special place on my lunch schedule to get tacos at El Olmito. I hope Muscatine appreciates these places. I am saying this place deserves one of the five star ratings that I reserve mostly for special little places.

Taco John’s

Reviews:
This store is very clean. The service is outstanding and the employees were very nice to me. The flavor and quality is better than Taco Bell. It's easily the best fast Mexican food in the area. I tried one of the the new salads (chicken / apple / cranberry) and it was to die for! Taco John's is the place to go if you love Mexican food and want to make healthy choices.
Definitely the best tacos in town. We always get at least a 6 pack and a pound and sometimes we get churros. There have been times when I would get a soda and it seems watered down, so I try to avoid ordering drinks any more. There have been a few times my potatoes weren't seasoned or weren't even fresh. Most of the time we use the drive thru but if we go inside it is always clean.
The in-house pico de gallo is delicious! The potato oles are a must, and I recommend the meat and potato burrito

Maid Rite

Happy Days, Grease, and Holly describes this spot! This is the best fast food place I've ever been to. Originally founded in this town, this unapologetically nostalgic old school legendary joint oozes charm. And the service is good. Things to try: Shakes, Real root beer from an Aspera wood keg, Buttermilk battered onion rings, Chili, Aaaaand the motherhuggin MAID RITES! It is in fact the name and their own invention, the Maid Rite which is a loose meat sandwich. I like to be a non conformist and get it as a Cheese Rite. A choice of several cheeses are available. To the uninitiated it's a doggone loose meat sandwich so like imagine a sloppy joe miles the sloppy. And no they're not that greasy but have a bit of sauce and juice which the recipe of that sauce and meat is hotly contested. I have it but anyhow. It's good. It's a small chain so go; it's all Rite. Maid Rite!
I was expecting a hamburger. I was served a sloppy Joe. Had I known this, I would have come here when I was in the mood for a sloppy Joe. It was a let down. Atmosphere is cool, fries are good, root beer was excellent. Service was Mediocre at best. Our server was like a robot. She was just going through the motions. Sorry muscatine, this is not a place to brag about.
Better than going to a big chain like subway, but this food is not healthy in any way. Love the wood panelling ambiance. Voted best dining in Durant, however there are only 2 places to eat here. One plus is that you can opt to have brown sugar on your sweet potato fries!!

Cant review the actual Chinese food as it is not in my taste. Love their butter potatoes and their corn nuggets, they are my favorites. Excellent chicken. The pizza is good not the best but pretty good just a bit to much cheese for what I like. A varity of choices. Clean and friendly staff. Sometimes takes a few minutes to get seated.
I've been going to Hong Kong buffet for years now and it's still as excellent as ever. Top notch Chinese food with a high degree of cleanliness and service. The interior is classic oriental with pleasant lighting, joyful music, and comfortable seating. Hong Kong is, imo, the best oriental restaurant in Muscatine.
Ms T, Andrew T and I were sort of caught in Muscatine the night of Christmas day before driving on up to Minnesota to spend our real Christmas with Aunt Annie and rest of the family. We had business to conduct the next day so were a little worried about finding a place to eat on Dec 25 for dinner. Hong Kong Buffet bailed us out and it was really not bad. We have a term in our family, "good-bad Chinese" food. This means that the food is probably not authentic and a Chinese diner would probably not like it, but it is good Americanized Chinese food and we don't know any better. That is precisely what we found on this well managed buffet. There were quite a number of people there also needing a place to eat on Christmas day evening. The restaurant did a good job of making small batches so things did not get cold or stale. They kept the dishes refreshed. The variety is pretty large and if you can't find something you like it's your problem. The food was very acceptable and I found it hard to limit myself and not overeat. So while we would have taken about anything to avoid eating gas station sandwiches, it was not really like we "settled". We really enjoyed it and I can envision returning. This would be an easy choice for me over the venerable Peking. I have just found their food to be really boring. (see my older review) So Thanks, Hong Kong Buffet for bailing us out. Solid three stars.
