The pie is delicious and homemade everyday! The prices are great and the food is pretty good (super greasy, f.y.i) The only reason I didn't give the A & M five stars is because they only accept cash and check, which is problematic for many people. However, it's work going to an ATM and checking this place out (even if it is just for the pie).

Cool, funky atmosphere. Lots of interesting artifacts. Will not take Credit or Debit cards. (ATM nearby) Lots of menu choices. Nothing fancy, real food. Known for their homemade pies. Easy parking. Large party, food came at different times.

If you're expecting typical diner food in a small-town, A&M meets all of those expectations. No, you will not be getting high-end food. No, the food will not blow your mind. Best yes, this place perfectly exemplifies small-town goodness! I absolutely love that it is located in this kind of run-down building that makes you a bit unsure about entering. The place is decorated eclectic signs from who knows how long ago. It has an old-fashioned diner kind of feel. The service is grumpy and sassy. Do not expect them to bend over backwards for you. And do not expect them to care about how your food tastes. All they are there for is to serve you your food. That is it. The serving size there is huge! The pancakes are fluffy and fill up an entire plate. I never come close to finishing my food and always have to take it home. Their cinnamon roll pancakes are full of sugary warm goodness. Did I mention everything is also super cheap? It's great! Just don't expect to be blown away with anything new and fabulous. This place exemplifies a typical American diner. No frills. Great for filling you up with sugary and oily goodness that will keep you going all day.

The decor is awesome inside, but that's where the good times pretty much stop. The burger was pretty bland, the crinkle fries were not fresh, and the service was lacking. But the decor is really, really cool. Cash only.

We were driving back to Chicago from a niece's graduation in Nebraska. Hungry, we checked the GPS for likely dining destinations, and spotted Grinnell a few miles up the road. Thinking that a respected lib arts college town, with historic downtown etc, would be a good pit stop with some decent fare, we drove around and parked on the town square park with shade for the dogs. Before parking we had driven past a few diners and a Mexican restaurant (in Iowa? Uh, no thanks.) We spotted the A & M Diner, saw that they had homemade pie and was full of locals and students, and that sold us. The dark warehouse style barn atmosphere was accepted as "local flavor." The outside tables and benches were too rickety and paint-peeled to consider. I was disappointed to see that the menu was yet again standard crap diner fair that we had been subjected to for the last three days on the middle-American road. I couldn't eat another burger, egg, or fried anything so I got the chef salad, which actually sounded ok on the menu. My wife was dubious of my choice; she got a chicken sandwich. Horrible horrible horrible. The salad was room temperature, ie wilted and warm. Brown limp lettuce was buried under a pile of rubbery fake ham and foul fake shredded cheese. There were four thin slices of green pepper on each corner of the plate, two of which were brown and puckered from age. Starving for three hours, I went ahead and picked through and ate what was edible. Most remained on the plate. Wife's sandwich was standard industrial prepackaged breast on packaged white bun. Fries - undercooked crinkle cut from a bag. Their "famous cole slaw" - inedibly sweet pureed slop from a bucket off a truck. We ate three bites and pushed it away. This is worse than the worst truck stop fare. And I overheard others talking about how the line an hour earlier had been out the door (it was Sunday morning.) Weekend breakfast is the best racket in the restaurant biz. Our chubby surly waitress seemed ready to just go home, and we saw her all of twice, once to order and once to bring our food. Wife wanted to go to Dairy Queen for soft serve. I live for pie, and thought maybe it would redeem the whole meal. After 20 minutes of not even seeing our waitress, or any other, I asked someone at the register to get someone to take our pie order. 15 minutes later I just went to pay and get out. Now there was no one at the register either. Finally someone showed, and she had to get our waitress for the bill. 5 more minutes standing there. Then waitress appears, glumly says "sorry" and rings us up. Now we find out its cash only. Walk to the car three blocks away to get cash. Walk back. Pay, furious, and get the hell out of Grinnell. Oh yeah, forgot to mention the most disgusting restaurant bathroom I've EVER seen. Always a good sign. Unfortunately I only went in on the way out. Thanks A & M for the worst restaurant experience of the year! the decade? My life?

The best hangover food ever!! I strongly recommend only going here for breakfast, any other food is generally greasy and not exceptional in anyway. But they do diner breakfast right: huge portions, super good toast, any eggs come with a slice of American cheese which is oddly awesome. The service is a little slow and grumpy, but the booths are super comfy and the decor is fun and kitschy. This is shady, mid-western atmosphere at its finest in my opinion, just be ready for it.
