This place has the most authentic and flavorful Italian food I've ever eaten. It's also dirt cheap. And the atmosphere is charming and friendly. The owner/chef comes to greet his customers all the time. This place is perfect for date night. But everyone knows now and tables are hard to get about half an hour after they open. I expect them to move to a bigger building soon. I wont describe the food to you because you simply have to go there and try it. It will blow your mind. You will judge all other italian by his. Go there!

I like Luigi's. It is a simple restaurant that puts a lot of love into their meals. They are not shy about the flavors. The owner loves to cook and stop by to check on the guests. They are very welcoming here. Try it I think you'll like it.

Because most businesses on SE 14th lack street numbers on them, I found Luigi's to be hard to find. What's missing at other places, but great about this business is that Luigi is the cook and he's probably also going to come out and greet you at some point, and make sure everything is 100% to your liking. Bravo, Luigi. I wish you were in West Des Moines so I could make it here often. You are doing what the "celebrated" chefs of Des Moines can't be bothered to do. I tried the chicken cacciatore on this, my first visit here and it was like my mom used to make. I'm going to hit this place again for spaghetti & meatballs and bring some friends.

Wonderful meal from a local restaurant. They were extremely accommodating despite a good sized group and last minute reservation. Can't wait to come back and try more. Don't forget to bring your own wine or beer!

Best food, atmosphere, and prices around!!!! The owner/chef even came out to us personally to make sure the food was great and was very friendly. The waitress was great and on top of everything. Will definately be going back...along with friends and family!!!

I'd been hearing about Luigi's, so decided to book a reservation for our group of five adults at 8 PM on a Friday night. The reservation probably wouldn't have been necessary, but as word continues to spread, it will be! The food was delicious, served efficiently and with friendly smiles, and we appreciated having no corkage fee for our wines. Everything is made from scratch, from the rolls to the entrees to the desserts. It's a labor of love for Luigi, who hails from northern Italy and whom you will likely meet. All of our entrees were incredible, from the penne bolognese to the pasta sampler to the shrimp pasta served scampi style. For dessert, we shared the limoncello mascarpone cake and the tiramisu - both were "delizioso." The prices are SO reasonable for such a special, authentic Italian experience. We asked our waitress if she had favorite menu items, and she said the made-from-scratch pizzas are a treat. We will plan to try those on our next visit, which will be very soon!

My mother in law brought me here for lunch today. My first time! I wasn't expecting much since it's a hole in the wall. I'm very picky about my pasta and sauces. I ordered the Alfredo and it was delicious. I don't like Olive Garden Alfredo but I loved this. It was saucy, and cheesy. My noodles were cooked perfectly. They serve you huge rolls and they are nice and hot. My better half ordered the meatball sandwich and loved it. It was huge. A salad came with my meal and the dressing was good and the lettuce was crisp. I liked the tiny croutons. They weren't stale and hard like most. I also had the tiramisu and it wasn't my fav. I did try my mother in laws lemon cake and it was awesome. It had lemon frosting for sweet but it had a start taste as well. It was a Tuesday afternoon so it want busy. Just a little hole in the wall but the guy who owns it not only waited on us but also cooked the food. He was nice and polite. It seems like a clean place, kind of small. The dishes were a bigger serving. I had to take mine home. I will be back again. I'll deff get the lemon cake this time. :-)

Some of the best Italian food I've had in Des Moines. I have been here many times and keep brining people and my wife here to eat. I would highly suggest it to anyone. I have tried something different each time I go and have never been disappointed. Bagio, the owner and cook, is a great guy. He always makes it a point to come out and talk. My only problem with the food is how much weight I put on (lol)! I'll keep going back.

Si, Si, Si! That's what I'll say if asked if I recommend eating here. My girlfriend had the Chicken Penne & I had the Lobster Ravioli. Wonderful & we'll be back to try other menu items. Atmosphere was great, service was cordial & the owner came by & welcomed us & thanked us. Many places I've gone here in Des Moines, they (the owners/chefs, etc) don't do that anymore. Which is why I'll return. People of Des Moines, you are always looking for new places to dine, well here you go!

We went for lunch today--our first visit. Our food was very good; the bread was excellent---warm and homemade. We will return soon in the evening w/ a good bottle of wine.

won't be back. had the special - spaghetti with olive oil and mushrooms. the spaghetti wasn't cooked fresh - it was hardly warm and the olive oil didn't stick to the pasta because the pasta tasted like it was cooked hours before. so the pasta was dry. the pasta needs to be cooked right before the oil is poured on it. it had no flavor whatsoever. took 3 bites, paid for it and walked out.

Luigi's was one of the best decisions I've ever made. We wanted Italian, so of course I went to Yelp for help. Based on reviews, we decided to give Luigi's a shot. As we pulled up I was a little concerned. The building is small and looks a little worn down. Upon entering, I was pleasantly surprised. The interior is very inviting. I ordered the Chicken Florentine and seriously wish I could take it home to Arizona. It was amazing, and had a lot of flavor. If you are in the Des Moines area I highly recommend giving Luigi's a try.

First impression upon going inside: ambiance was very quaint, allowing for more personal interaction with your party. All other reviews about the rolls are spot on - big, soft, tasty, and warm. The bruschetta was the best we'd had anywhere in a long time. The bread was perfectly toasted & the ingredients were incredibly fresh! They don't serve alcohol but you may bring in your own wine with no corkage fee. I got the shrimp & scallops in scampi sauce. He got the Veal Luigi. Very large portions, we needed a to go box for mine. We enjoyed the food very much, it was all so fresh! The owner is very personable & talented :) Be careful as you may miss it if you blink. We initially stopped in to use a coupon from the entertainment book, I'm so glad we gave this place a try! I will be back again and again!

Probably our new favorite restaurant in town for many reasons. One, the ambiance- quaint, simple, not to uppity, and easy to have good conversation over a long dinner. The food is excellent and the rolls and amazing and fresh. Staff is kind and the owner/chef very personable. Love this place and bringing new people who've never heard of it.

We took friends to Luigi's for a birthday celebration. The building is hard to spot but well worth the search. Each of us had a different entree, and the best way to express how good all the meals were was the comment "You know it's a great meal when you don't want to take the last bite, because then it's over." All the pasta is made fresh by the chef, and he does a marvelous job with every plate. Bring your own wine since they don't have a liquor license, but they do supply the glasses. We consider this the best Italian restaurant in Des Moines!

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
