Excellent service by Krisitn for sure . Came in and the staff was great and sat us immediately even though it was 30 minutes to close. All meals were great and well priced. Don't let the giant cow billboard scare you away. The decor is very dated - which is why they get 4 not a 5 star. Would give 4.5 but we all know there is no option for that. Would come back for sure. Directions - go to the casino - the. Head towards 80 - turn right - look for a giant cow

I have to admit the larger than life Bovine in the front of the lounge has deterred me for many years. Last night my wife and I decided to brave the cold fog and decided to walk into the home of the mutant cow in search of a good meal. At first I was worried as we walked in about 30 minutes before closing and stood at the host stand for what felt like 10 minutes waiting for a host to come. The bartender noticed us and commented "now where is our resident slacker..?" I laughed under my breath and hope this would not be a portent of things to come. We were eventually seated and I ordered the cattlemen's cut prime rib while wifey ordered the rib eye. We both ordered the baked potato as a side and I had a caesar salad to start. Our waiter then brought out some bread which I must say is some of the best bread that I have EVER had. Not sure if it was "homemade" but it sure tasted like it. It was warm, soft, and addictive. I would rename it crack bread. OMG. I had to stop myself from simply eating that for dinner. The caesar salad came covered in good parmesan cheese (not coming from the green kraft bottle) so if you like cheese this is the salad to order. Then came our glorious steaks. The wife's rib eye was great but the prime rib is the cut to order. It was so flavorful. I can tell they brine/marinate the beef in some way because it is packed with beef flavor. It didn't need any gravy and was tremendous with just a few dashes of salt. The potatoes were ok, not with a crunchy salt crust but good nonetheless. Dessert was meh, don't eat dessert here, I ordered the apple pie and I could tell it was a microwaved piece of costco pie. Not bad but maybe not worth the money although I have to say after all that salted meat it definitely helped to close the meal. I have to say our server was great. He brought us some extra bread to take home to the fam (which didn't last very long). In short, order LOTS of BREAD. Order the PRIME RIB, then hit Over the top for some ice cream. Perfect night. It's going to be hard to get back to my vegan days after this.

We went here for Father's Day. The big steer in the parking lot and decor is a little hokey, not my style to say the least. But the food was awesome. I ate everything and so did everyone at my table. My stepdad was very pleased with the brunch. Prices were very reasonable. Server was slammed but didn't miss a beat.

If you're looking for ambience, don't come here. If you want a solid meal with competent, no-nonsense service, it's a fine choice. The experience was reminiscent of a Wisconsin supper club without the lake view -- or windows, for that matter. But my burger was big and juicy and paired well with mashed potatoes and gravy and a $2 bottle of Leinie. Worth a try.

The prime rib wasn't great tonight. It would be stretching it to say that particular beef graded choice. However the waiter said they roast at least 8 beefs on Saturday nights so we just got the wrong one. The tenderloin and scallops were great and the waiter Ted was better! We celebrated a birthday and he made it special for everyone. We gave it 4.5 stars the last few visits. Tonight due to the prime rib; a 3.

Always hot fresh food. Wait staff always friendly and orders are always correct. Everything is delicious! Best crab stuffed shrimp around. They grind their own burgers from steak. Mouth watering delicious. Can't say enough good things about the food and service. Call ahead and make reservations as sometimes you will have to wait. Bar is great for waiting if you're there early enough to get a seat.

I'm still sitting at my table as I write this review. This place is 5 stars all the way. The prime rib was perfect. I came with one other person and we had to wait about 15 minutes, but I understand why. This place is amazing.

One heal of a place. The stakes are out of this world, when you walk in prepare for a wait and then be amazed by the stake - just perfect.

Slightly over priced but the food is good. It's nice to have a good, local restaurant in Altoona.

Tonight I ordered a 14 ounce ribeye which came with a twice baked potato and small loaf of bread and a side salad with creamy parm dressing. I ordered it to go. My beef was with the steak. It was terrible. There was a huge amount of fat and gristle making it almost inedible. In fact I weighed the fat after the fact and it weighed 3.5 ounces--a full 25% of the 14 ounce steak! Pathetic. Oh, and in case you're wondering if it was just marbeling, it wasn't. It was silver skin. fat and gristle. I cannot recommend The Big Steer after this meal. When my wife, who shared the meal with me, called to complain, they said they would call us back after "inspecting the uncooked steaks in the kitchen." I received no such call. That's just bad customer service. I think sometimes restaurants skate by on whatever success they've achieved and get lazy and don't strive for continuous improvement. That's bad business because eventually someone will come along and put them out of business. Can you whisper "Johnny's Italian Steakhouse?" I've eaten at the best steak houses in the country, and while I don't expect The Big Steer to be on par, I do expect more for my $26.

Recently stopped in to enjoy their Sunday Brunch. Was thrilled that it was not buffet food. Nice little menu w/breakfast or lunch choices. Service was good and food was just as good. Only issue was some coffee that tasted a little burnt, but new cup quickly corrected that. Highly recommended! Enjoy!!

Great fillet-tender and cooked perfectly. Service was prompt, everyone friendly. The only drawback is the long wait.

I heard this place had a mean steak and that it used to be an Outback steakhouse. Wasn't sure what to expect till I walked in & walked right into the 80s. However, there was nothing dank or out of date about their food! This place is a hidden gem. My boyfriend and I split the Steak DeBurgo, medium rare. You had a choice between 1-6 oz. or 2-4 oz. so the 2-4 oz. portions were perfect. We each got a salad, his the danish blue and mine was the ceaser. The ceaser dressing was a little too thick but the danish blue was delish. We each got a side and I could have walked away a happy woman with just that! We tried to mac n cheese & the potatoes au gratin. They were so rich and amazing. I dreamed about them later. The server came by several times to refill our water without interrupting us which was nice. The manager stopped by to check on our steak and it was cooked perfectly. I'll be back again. You won't regret stopping by and trying this place out. They've been around a long time!

The staff was very friendly. The owner and manager were both there. Clean and a little fancy on the inside. Loved it.

My in laws took us here because I wanted to eat a yummy prime rib in the midwest. I'm a Cali girl who wanted delicious corn fed beef. The place is definitely filled with local guests and the table we were seated at was kind of in the middle of the restaurant. They gave 4 of us a round table that seated 6. The meal comes with a side salad and a side of your choice. We ordered the prime rib, ribeye, fish and our sides were the cheesy corn, mashed potatoes and mac and cheese. I really liked my prime rib with the horseradish sauce on the side. The cheesy corn was to die for as I haven't had anything close to it in CA. I enjoyed the food and of course the company since I haven't seen my in laws in 6 months. I will definitely go back and have another prime rib.

Last night we wanted to have a good steak. We tried that at the big steer. We were seated in short order even though the place was packed. Drinks came quickly and so did the food. Just to make presentation better the steak covered the plate, downside that thin of a steak was over cooked and tasteless. The sides were ok, even though the sour cream tasted like instant ranch dressing. The waitress said it was sour cream special from a promo mate dairy. I doubt that I would return here the cost was quite high for the quality of steak. Sorry folks western beef is hard to beat.

I had the filet and lobster tail with cheesy corn, french onion soup & bread... $31.95. The steak was amazing. It was cooked perfectly and was very tender. The sides were great too! We had a reservation on a Saturdaynight for 6:20, only waited about 15 min after getting there to be seated. The place was packed! It's very casual.. hoodies and jeans will do.

Very disappointed with the service this evening. Was told we would have a 30-45 min and we waited well over an hour after everyone that came after us was seated. When we went up for the second time to ask about seating we noticed an empty table right there. Then we were seated only to be told they were out of Prime Rib which is the only reason we waited in the first place. When you are known for your prime rib you should notify your waiting guests! We left without eating...

While waiting for the 4th of July fireworks at Prairie meadows we had big steers carryout special. The food was reasonably priced and tasted great the package that great for a picnic style meal. 2 burgers and fries half pound burgers and also fried chicken for two. The fried chicken came with salad bread and your choice of baked potato or french fries everything was very tasty. Their fried pickles were GREAT!

Great place to eat. Good for 1-2 people or groups. The food is awesome. The staff is awesome. Quiet. Prices are fair. Dessert is awesome. Have tried many different menu items and they are all awesome.

Good food and good service (mostly, the sever dropped the fork off a spaghetti covered plate on my wife). Portion sizes are decent, not huge. Prices are too high though- every entree should really be about $4-5 cheaper to make it reasonable. That would probably make this one of the best restaurants in the metro. It's always busy there, so they still must be doing something right. Prepare to wait 30 mins on a Friday or Saturday night.

Service was good, sirloin steak was not, not very flavorful and a little tough especially since I order my steaks med/rare. Very disappointing for the price.

All the locals call this "the place to eat". Don't!! The price was reasonable, but the salad with our steak was just iceberg with dressing and our steaks were overdone and no flavor. The appetizer was also served cold and barely before our meal and we were crammed in like sardines with barely 2 ft between our table for two and the others tables on either side.

food was great - we both had rib eyes that were cooked to perfection. the baked potato and salad were great. I would definitely go back - no one else has such great tasting steaks.

We had been traveling by car for 10 hours and checked into hotel down the road. The Steakhouse was crowded but only a 5 min wait. The food was delicious but a bit pricey. I def would recommend it on your way out of or into Des Moines.

I normally am not the type of guy to frequent steakhouses. I'm not a type of eater that refuses to call it a meal if it doesn't come with meat, and my wife is a vegetarian - so when we do go out, a steakhouse isn't usually on the top list. That, and even though Iowa has excellent options for delicious meat suppliers, steakhouse meals are generally overpriced in my opinion. Regardless of my normal tastes, we went to the Big Steer with some friends on their recommendation. And while I may not enjoy steakhouses, who can pass up the novelty of a restaurant that displays the food it slaughters in the form of a giant cow lit up like a Christmas tree in front of the building? I was pleasantly surprised. I don't think I've ever had a waitress do a job as perfectly as ours. She was a total rockstar. She was right there whenever we needed her, swooping in like a hawk to refill drinks. Friendly, knowledgeable, and fast. The food orders were brought quickly and exactly as we wanted them. Portions are enormous with tons of side options. Definitely the best steakhouse I've been to in the area. I would highly recommend it for the type of restaurant it is.

Seated immediately. Bunch of old folks dining, so I knew it'd be good. Friendly wait staff. Was starving so i ordered the appetizer platter. The moz sticks and fried mushrooms were the best I've had; great seasoning. Then came the 16oz. ribeye and twice-baked potato. Wow! If in the area dine here. Oh, almost forgot about the loaf of bread and butter. Delicious.

I wish I could find their menu online. They have delicious meat. And you know what? The serve spiced apple rings. They're delicious. The service was a little formal, I think of this place as a laid-back steakhouse, but really that's no drawback. The decor is way dated, but I think it adds to the ambiance of a Midwest flatland steakhouse.

My absolute favorite steakhouse! The steaks are as tender as they come, and the prime rib is the best I've ever had. We have eaten here several times with various people and no one has ever been disappointed. The meat always comes out as ordered. The crab-stuffed prawns are amazing. The service is always spot on. The prices are very reasonable.
