Wow. This place is amazing. About 15-20 minutes away from Hapuna Prince Hotel in Kamuela where we were staying. Very low key but their fish are super fresh. I believe it's a husband and wife business. The server and cashier is the wife and husband is the chef, I assume. You can tell that they are new to business based off their simple website and look of their business but their service is incredible. It really broke my heart how genuine and sweet they were. They spoke understand and can speak English but I can tell it wasn't their forte. We tried their salmon bowl, yellow tail spicy hand roll and many of their appetizers. Best sushi I've ever had, hands down. Support their business! I know it doesn't look all that great but don't judge a book by its cover. You can tell they are working their tail off to make their business run but trust me, it's worth to visit them! They are always smiling and that's the best attitude you can have. I will visit again when I'm on the big island.

What a find! We were looking for a solid Japanese place but couldn't find one we liked near the Kona area. We drove up to Waimea to try this place, and we were not disappointed. First off, the miso soup here is legit. You can taste that they use good fish broth, which adds a great flavor. The Hamachi Kama is cheaper than most places I've seen, yet better! Crunchy on the outside, moist and delicious inside. Also tried the salmon skin salad (delicious) and the bowl with fish and unagi (also delicious!). Will be going back when we're on the big island again for sure.

Excellent food and friendly service. I had the real crab roll, fried oysters, and hamachi karma for lunch and everything was delicious :)

The San Francisco Bay Area has some of the best sushi bars around. Imagine my surprise when I discover that Aka Sushi Bar, in Hawaii, produces some of the best sushi I've ever had the pleasure of eating. This place is no joke; accept no substitutes during your stay on the Big Island.

The best sushi I've ever tasted! Hamachi, salmon, and maguro melt in your mouth. Delicious avocado on the caterpillar role. Moe never skimps on the portions, prepare to leave full of fish and avocado not just rice! Also BYOB!

Wow, I was shocked at how good the fish is here. The tuna was just OK, but the himachi and salmon was delicious and the spicy tuna cut rolls were hi there with the best. Real crab hand roll... delicious. Seaweed was fresh but was a little disappointed with the rice quality (too soft). What a bargain too for the quality!

What a fantastic little joint, 4.5 stars. In a small strip mall in Waimea sits this place. There is little seating but you probably won't have a hard time getting a seat. Simple prepared sushi and the like. Really good. The maguro was so blood red and dark. The sushiya produces large pieces of nigri, I am talking longer than my fingers!! Dunk tap these suckers in the soy is a challenge! Best impressive part was the rice under the sushi, small cube and just a hint of warmth it melts in your mouth. Great place to get some delicious sushi. Service is also very cordial from a young Japanese woman. I would give this place 5 stars but I need to eat more items on the menu.

This was some of the most delicious and well prepared sushi I have ever had... seriously. We just happened to stop in on our way from Hilo to Kona. The server, Max was awesome and friendly and suggested the aka roll with spicy tuna for us. It was really good! I have to say that the salmon nagiri was honestly the best I've ever had. The chefs know what the eff they're doing there. We got gross full and then ate more and our bill was fifty bucks WORTH IT. *mic drop*

I guess this place has some fans, but not me. I've walked by the place many times but they were closed or I wasn't in the mood. Anyway, I finally caught them open so it was time to give them a try. Service was good, maybe because I was the only customer there. So, three stars for service. The sushi? Authentic? Maybe, I guess. I ordered spicy tuna roll, my favorite, plus several pieces of nigri. The sushi master went to work and I was ready for some good stuff. "Order ready", I heard with anticipation. Then I saw my sushi... What, that? I thought to myself. The kind server handed me this little dinky tiny box. There was no way I was going to satisfy my craving. Then again, maybe the taste would win me over. But alas, disappointed again. Sigh. The roll was tiny and soooo bland. The nigri was a tiny ball of rice with a small, but thick, piece of fish. Sorry, all my taste buds agree that the meal wasn't something to write home about. So, what do I recommend? Go across the street to Foodland Market. There is a sushi master in the deli that will make to order while you wait or you can choose from the yummy selection of "ready to go" items. There are no tables, so drive to the beach or choose a patch of grass, sit and enjoy!

Great sushi, but want to charge you for EVERYTHING. I asked for some siracha and they wanted do charge me a dollar. Order a chicken teriyaki for my boys (dinner size) and they had maybe 7 strips of thin chicken for $10. Not worth it. The sushi is great though.

Wow. Amazingly fresh sushi. Probably best I have ever had. Very nice couple running this place. Highly recommend the tuna in any roll or sushi here.

Our first sushi visit on the island and I have to say, we are total fans! Came here on a Wednesday afternoon around 1:15 and we were seated right away! The place is relatively small, but cozy. The sushi menu is minimal but it has everything you need! We got the 8-piece nigiri, which came with tuna, hamachi and salmon. The fish is VERY fresh and amazing quality! Not sure if all fish on the island is like this, but you definitely get your money's worth here. We also got very lucky to get the last order of Uni for the day and this was the BEST UNI I HAVE EVER HAD. It tasted fresh out of the sea urchin and was extremely moist and creamy. This won my heart immediately. To finish the meal, we ordered a few hand rolls to try and while they were all exceptionally good, our favorites were the unagi and the spicy salmon hand rolls! Seriously amazing! The service was also another plus because our server was so patient and attentive and calm, I loved him! I only docked a star because the portion sizes are somewhat small, but the quality makes up for it! I'm just used to bigger portion sizes on the mainland! Definitely would recommend!

Small place fairly quick service for only 2 people working. I had shrimp tempura bowl couple of shrimp fried zucchini and fried potatoes with brown rice just right portion to fill me up. Wife had sashimi assorted and veggie roll and she said it was very good. Worth stopping in if your traveling around the big island

Had dinner here last night. Spider roll, AKA roll, maguro, soft shell crab and spicy tuna roll. All were great! Fresh and pleasing to the eye. Place was full but still pretty good service. Ambience a bit sparse but I came for the sushi and it was awesome. Will definitely be back!

Our last visit there, the service was a bit slower than usual, but the couple who own it are always extremely polite, and the food is always excellent! I recommend the salmon skin salad, and the bowls are very good too, but a most def is the sake and hamachi nigiri. Very nice! Pricing is fair (better than fair if you are tired of resort food), and the food is great! Just make sure you call before going up, as they will close when they feel it is appropriate.

Yelp Challenge 365 # 99/365 Authentic sushi in paniolo country? They say seeing is believing. I say taste test! Fresh seafood for sure. Nigiri has a cute pad of rice (short grain, very very good) with a huge slice of frish. Their rolls were cute in size; I think just the right amount for taste of freshness and talent and the opportunity to try other varieties of rolls. Truthfully and if I were reviewing this restaurant on freshness alone, they deserve 5 stars but here's my take on the 1 star demerit 1) they charge for tea (usually a "give" in most sushi bars I've been to) 2) asked for a refill (refills are free) BUT we were told "it will take a few minutes because I have to heat some water.... now what sushi bar operates without hot water? 3) no oshibori (for the price they should have offered it like most authentic sushi places) 4) had to ask for refill on water too (and they weren't busy) Barring points 1-4 the place is great... service is okay and the best? sushi as authentic as you can get in PANIOLO country Yaa Hoo!!

Chef Mo is the real deal. Mo was trained in Japan and ran the sushi bar at Daniel Thiebault's Restaurant before setting out on his own as Aka Sushi. Mo's sushi is fresh and very reasonably priced. Our favorites are the Aka roll, a shrimp tempura roll topped with tuna, and the Spider roll, a deep fried soft shell crab roll. Aka sushi's new home has a nice atmosphere and friendly, attentive service. Aka Sushi is a local favorite and the best (and only) sushi restaurant in Waimea.

Very fresh fish. The caterpillar roll with Hawaiian avocados and eel and tempura veggies are a good choice for those that aren't into raw fish as well.

Interior clean, prices appear reasonable and even somewhat cheap for Japanese food. Slabs of fish on the nigiri were huge. Sushi and tempura quite tasty. Overall I was impressed and plan to come back the next time I'm in Waimea.

Have been going here since they were in the Kamuela Deli (which is the number listed here. The new number is 887-2320) and have always been impressed with freshness, price, friendliness, the works. Top notch.

Superb sushi! Best I had on Big Island -- ultra fresh, and quite reasonable. Chef Mo is the genuine article from Japan, and he and his wife(?) are very friendly. A must-visit little spot in a low-key strip mall.

Tasty sushi. I like how the chef buys smaller quantities and has the fish delivered daily.
