I'm not a huge fan of Thai food, but my husband and I were in Volcano, we were hungry, and it was after 7 PM. Not a lot of options. I think maybe one other place was open. My husband was sick (sad times) and the thought of noodles and soup sounded SO GOOD to both of us. The portions are generous, which on a normal day would be awesome for my hubby because of his enormous appetite but that day unfortunately it didn't really matter. Oh, and the Kona coffee ice cream was excellent. We actually ordered it for take-out, since we were staying at a place right around the corner. Customer service was good from what we saw. We'd go back!

WOW. Just ate the best green curry tofu of my LIFE here. My wife got the lemongrass chicken and was also very impressed. Staff was super friendly, too. What a gem! Service was slightly slow but the place was very full (on a weeknight), so I think this is acceptable. A+ nonetheless. I would wait hours for this food!

Fantastic Restaurant. I had the green curry with tofu and it was awesome. After some advice from the server on what level of hotness I should order, I decided to go for the "hot" rather than the "Thai Hot" and I'm glad I did cause my dish was super hot and bursting with flavor. One of the few restaurants I've been to where "hot" is actually HOT.

One of the best thai places I have been to. Must visit if u love thai and are visiting the volcano national park!

I'd give this place a zero if they let me. I was a part of a group who were made to wait for 2 hours for dinner and never got our food. It was xmas day, understandably busy but this was a chaos in a league of its own where dinner guests at other tables were actually helping the servers expedite the service. It was that damn slow and ridiculously bad. I usually don't write negative reviews but this place deserved one. After placing our order and getting just the papaya salad (after maybe an hour) we began expressing our frustration with the wait multiple times.....the waitress after somehow catching her attention scrambled through and got out......another papaya salad by mistake. WTF, go get the rest of the food! On top of that the waitress cusses out loudly right by our table after realizing their mistake. After 2 hours of wait and neglect we ran out of patience I told the waitress we can't wait anymore since we had a two hour drive to get to our hotel and this waitress asks me to pay for the damn papaya salad. I let her know how shady this was but I didn't summon the manager (whom I later saw scolding the waitress for having asked me for the Money as I was exiting the restaurant fuming) 0/5 I don't mind paying for what I got and ate but when it's a measly $7 salad and U were made to wait 2 hours for that, I don't think it's too much to expect the restaurant to comp it....especially since we had complained and enquired about when our food was gonna come out at least 4-5 times by then.

Wasn't overly hungry so I was looking for a salad. Ordered the Thai salad with chicken at spice level hot which the server said was a 9 out of 10 (Thai hot he said is a 12 out of 10). The spice had a good kick to it and I really enjoyed it. However I love spicy food. My husband tried it and he very much thought it was too hot. He is a medium hot type of spice guy. Unfortunately the good size salad was mostly chicken and not much lettuce so I filled up quickly. I'm pretty sure they thought I hated my meal since I couldn't come close to finishing it. I would consider it more of a chicken dish with some lettuce. My husband got a salmon dish and really enjoyed it. I would rate it a 3.5.

My wife and I ate here twice when we were staying in Volcano for a couple of days. We both thoroughly enjoyed both visits and the food was wonderful. I have to believe this is what authentic Thai food is. This was my first time eating a Thai curry and it was delicious. There was a picture on the wall of a little girl in a beautiful traditional Thai dress. My wife noticed the little girl resembled our waitress and asked her about it. She was embarrassed that we had recognized her and blamed her parents for putting it up there. It was funny. The staff were all really nice and we were sad we did not have another day to stay so we could eat here again.

Excellent food and a good price. Had lunch and the staff was very friendly! The pad kee Mao is great. They cook spicyness to the order. And was it down with a Thai tea. The restaurant was clean and open, a nice ambiance. I'll be stopping back for dinner in the future.

This was, hands down, the best green curry I've had since I learned to make homemade green curry on an organic farm in Chiang Mai Thailand 8 years ago. Seriously, my husband and I basically took a spoon to the leftover curry to make sure we didn't leave any uneaten. They also serve sticky rice in little baskets- very authentic and not something I have seen very often in the states. My husband had the seafood curry special with white pineapple- also delicious. I have to say the décor is very authentic as well- pictures of the royal family, a small shrine in the corner. I couldn't believe that in this tiny part of Hawaii with just a few restaurants that we found a meal as good as this. my mouth is watering just thinking about that green curry. We really enjoyed Volcano National Park, but I'd consider going back to that part of the Big Island just to get dinner again!!

Don't even bother the food was ok. Taste just as good as the Thai in the local shopping mall in the food court. But three times the price. Definitely a tourist trap. They have outraged prices for the food and charge a $6 sharing of you spit the $15 plate. Of course they still tag you 20% if you have a table of 6 or more we had 4 adults and 2 kids and the kid menu is terrible. As we were tagged as a party we were forgotten about as soon as we put in our order by the waitress since she already knew she made her tip. Instead just go next door at lava cafe it 3 stars right now but at least to walk in knowing that so they might surprise you with good service.

Great food and very friendly server. I had the Thai Thai curry with tofu - delicious. Particularly the tofu was great. The sweet rice and mango made a perfect desert for the family.

We stopped at Thai Thai after visiting the volcano. Thanks for the great suggestion, Yelp! It was so delicious and really hit the spot for a late lunch after hiking. The pad thai with short rib beef was incredible, and the Thai iced tea was so delicious. My husband got the special curry with chicken, which he said was the best curry he's had (he ordered it too spicy for me, but you can choose your level of spice). Service was good, and the food was great! Definitely worth the trip.

We stopped there by chance, place was busy we got a table right away. We ordered soup, pad thai w/short rib and chicken satay w/peanut sauce. Everything was delicious! Service was great as well Definitely recommend.

We dined at Thai Thai on our second night in Volcano and we are so glad to have found this gem here! After watching the sunset from Jagger museum at Volcanoes national park, we were starving and craving some spicy, flavorful food. The people here were very friendly and recommended some favorites from the menu. They also let us know that their spice levels are higher than most other thai restaurants. We ordered the eggplant basil entree (hot) and the Thai Thai special curry (medium hot). Both were flavorful and excellent, and we were glad that we did not choose the Thai hot option!! So definitely go here if you're in Volcano and if you like Thai food!

Well, you are on the side of a volcano in Hawaii. There is really nowhere to go and get a sit down Meal within 25 miles. You find a Thai place. You try it. It's good, not amazing. I liked it. I would go back and will when I am there again. The ambiance leaves a lot to be desired. It is almost like it used to be a tiki bar or something and got hacked up a few times over the years.

  • Matthew B.

Good menu, great food and volcano large prices. Kids menu was a nice surprise and made kids happy. Prices here are expensive, even by Volcano Hawaii prices- $25 shrimp Pad Thai. Price is only reason I gave 4 stars rather than 5

The food was good, but the service leaves something to be desired. We ordered the Thai Basil, a Curry, and some drinks. The food that came out was good, but nothing special. Fairly standard fair and flavors for a Thai place. If I rated on food alone, it would probably be 3-3.5 stars. The price might bring it down to 3 as some sides and an extra bowl of rice were overpriced for what they were. The service brought it down to 2 stars. For most of the night our waiter was nowhere to be found. We had to grab the attention of passing waiters for condiments or napkins after waiting considerable time for him to show. There was no follow-up after delivery of the food. A simple refill of a soda took multiple requests and took far too long until a third request was made, at which point we received a fairly rude response suggesting that we were asking for our soda to cut in line at the bar. By the time we received the single soda refill, it was brought out with the bill and we were both done eating. I cannot recommend this place based on the service received.

We were staying at the nearby Aloha Crater Lodge and ate here on April 10 &12, 2015. It's true that options at Volcano are a little limited but we liked Thai Thai enough to come back again. We had the Thai Basil Stir Fry, Pad Thai and Tom Yum soup which were all deliciously tasty with just the right spiciness. The service was good and our waitress on the first evening was very friendly and welcoming.

I literally jumped for joy after eating at Thai Thai Restaurant becauseThai Thai Restaurant is fantastic! If you're in Volcano this is a must eat place. Luckily it's great since there are no too many places in Volcano to eat. In fact we ate dinner first and then HAD to have lunch there the next day too! I love Thai food and this place is "as good as it gets!". I am addicted to VERY SPICY food and am rarely satisfied at Thai and Indian restaurants because they cannot make my food spicy enough. Thus, I was not disappointed when I ordered my dish "Thai Hot" (the waitress warned me that on a scale of 1 - 10 "Thai Hot" is a 12.) Well, it was hot indeed, but it was perfect! I wanted to jump for joy and did! The restaurant is big and has ample parking, but the service is a little slow. Since the food was so good I did not deduct any stars. We had the eggplant and basil stir fry with beef short ribs (FANTASTIC!!!), the masaman curry and Pad sea ew. All were great.

Wow! I had one of the best Thai dishes I've ever had anywhere, period. Not that I've been to Thailand, but living in San Francisco you would think that what we get there would be tops. Not true. I think the key is in the freshness - it was a dish with locally grown eggplant and thai basil - simply scrumptious. And with sticky rice yum yum yum. We also had deep fried vegetarian egg rolls, those were pretty good, and the husband for some unexplained reason had a cheeseburger, which was kinda like a Costco hockey puck patty....well, that's what you get for ordering 'murican. Stick with the Thai!!

We did not expect this to be so good! We had dinner here twice (their house special curry and stir fry). Service was great and food really delicious! If i lived here i would be a regular!

The garlic black pepper shrimp was awesome! Plus the hardware store is right next door, and the volcano laundromat :) Champa Thai still has the best masuman curry though

My boyfriend and I decided to spend our Christmas in Hawai'i and it was a truly magical experience. Since we were in volcano for Christmas, it seemed like everything else in town was closed. And mind you, this is a very small town. The grocery stores close at around 6, I believe. Anyways, we found this place and we were so stoked they were open! We heard such great things about this place and we wanted to see how the Thai food fared here versus Thai food in San Francisco. First of all, it was packed! They had at least a few big groups and we waited a while for a table, but we were fine with that because it was Christmas! What else would you expect if there was nothing else open? My boyfriend ordered the pad thai with beef and I had the Mahi special curry! We both like spice so we got it at like a 6/10 and that was perfect for us! The food was incredible and we were pleasantly surprised! It is just as good, probably even better than the food back home in San Fran. I don't know why people were complaining about the wait. I felt bad for the workers who were running around on Christmas, catering to these rude people who were sitting next to us. Although we had to wait, we were just glad that there was somewhere open and we didn't have to starve to death! Can't wait to be back again, now off to Maui!

TIP: if you are ordering hot.... That's exactly what you are getting. The green and red curries are very good. They give you an option of sticky or jasmine rice. To each it's own. The manager saw that my 2 year old was being a little impatient and brought over some toys for him to play with! She saved the meal! If you are coming to Volcano stop at the park and then come here.

After a few hours of hiking the volcano we stopped in for some Thai food. Two of us ordered noodle dishes and two ordered stir fry dishes. Everyone loved their meals. Very delicious and excellent service. I was very thirsty from the hike and lack of water and kept downing glass after glass and they kept on top of my refills. We split the summer roll appetizer and it was very good. The sauce was nice and not too spicy which was good because one of our dining companions can't stand much heat. She also really appreciated that they were able to do her dish with no spice. She was very pleased with this fact. The vegetable selection was really impressive as well. My dish had carrots, broccoli, cabbage, bamboo, baby bok choy, red bell peppers, and I'm probably forgetting some others. Overall, a great meal in a small town.

I wish I didn't live so far away - this is the best Thai food I've ever had. The curry is delicious and the Thai Thai Mai Tai is just spicy enough.

Visiting Volcano mountain. Stopped at Thai Thai for dinner and had pad thai, yellow curry, chicken satay. The yellow chicken curry was very good along with the chicken satay. The pad thai was sweeter than what I'm used to but overall was good. The place is clean and service was good. I would come back again to try more dishes.

This place is easily one of the most flavorful Thai restaurants I've ever been to. We had the Thai iced tea, pad kee mao tofu, and eggplant and basil chicken. They were excellent. The only comment I have is that they made a big deal about how the medium and hot were going to be a lot spicier than we expected, but they were actually a little on the weak side for us. We eat spicy food out quite a bit. Nevertheless, everything was fantastic!

Very fresh summer rolls and one of the best Tom Yum versions I've ever had. What a great surprise off the path near the park. We will come back!!

This review feels impossible to write. The atmosphere is bizarre and we laughed at it while there, and afterward. They have seating for an army, and a collection of artwork that boggles the most creative of minds... nonetheless, we went due to a SEVERE lack of options in Volcano. Our food was worthy of 4.5 stars. I had a nice curry (very thick) though the portion was smaller than I wanted. And my date had pad-thai. But the best question to ask is why did we order those dishes? 1 word only, PRICE. We live in Chicago, have access to great thai food all the time. We go out at expensive places, we get it... but. This place is so far detached from society that I think they have also become detached from price-reality. Some simple dishes that I expect to be a max of $12 on the mainland, so I will give $15 for Hawaii... are suddenly $22-24. Some of their specials were upwards of nearly $30. And these are simple doodle dishes... Not a goose! Lack of options make this a viable option to eat.

Best Thai food I have ever had. The restaurant is huge, so you can definitely bring a crowd if you want - it was empty when we went. Had the Tom Kha, Red Curry (with chicken) and Basil Eggplant with Chicken. All three were incredible, and the portions were good sized. Not the cheapest Thai, but it was definitely worth it. Best place to eat in Volcano Village!

  • Cindy U.

I'll admit, my husband and I are a tough crowd to please when it comes to Thai food since we consider it one of our favorite go to's ( and we got married in Thailand!). The food was good. Obviously not the best I've had, but good. The major set back, food was way overpriced but I guess you could go for the killing since there really isn't much around the area. The tom ka lacked depth, the green curry was ok, and I ordered fried tilapia which was doused with a thick curry, peanut sauce which did not make much sense coz it made the fish soggy. Not sure I'd go back. Maybe next time l'll make sure to make a reservation at volcano house?

There is very little variety for eateries up by the volcano so I was thrilled when the food here turned out to be phenomenal. My wife had a curry which is all she ever eats at thai restaurants and she raved about it. I absolutly loved the summer rolls very fresh and refreshing appetizer that has that wonderful authentic basil flair I love in thai food.

  • Leslie T.

Green papaya salad ($12) -- julienned green papaya and carrot in a refreshing sauce that tasted of lime, fish sauce, sugar Eggplant basil stir fry with beef short ribs ($18) -- local grown eggplant was very tasty, beef was tough Pad kee Mao with shrimp ($26) -- local shrimp was fresh & juicy but noodles and vegetables were bland Mahi mahi curry ($26) -- local fish was fresh but slightly over cooked Decent Thai food located less than 2 miles from the Kilauea Volcano in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Not nearly as good as Thai food in the San Francisco Bay Area (smaller portions, not as flavorful, higher price) but a good option near the park and decent for the region. Service was friendly, food came out quickly. Overall: 3.5 stars (will round to 4 but would be 2.5 stars in California)

  • S R.

The food here is very good. For a place that's open late it offers a wide variety in their menu. Service was excellent. The soups we had were outstanding but on the high price side ($16-$19) however the portions were very generous. My gripe is charging $2.60 for the [only] 2 bowls of rice we had. Really? 2 soups, 1 family sized desert, 1 beer, 2 bowls of rice... $77. Food was very good but come on. Throw in 1 small bowl of rice per person.

  • Cassandra D.

It's decent Thai food and generous portions but the prices are kinda crazy. If you come from somewhere with a lot of great Thai places, you might be disappointed.

We stopped here after spending sunset at the top of the Volcano and another restaurant from Yelp was closed the night we were there. It ended up being our favorite meal on The Big Island and one of our favorite Thai meals ever. Overall, the portions were very generous - we ended up bringing extra of pretty much everything back to our rental for lunch the next day. The prices were higher than we were used to in Atlanta for Thai, but based on the quality and quantity (we got two meals out of one) we ended up ok with the final bill. More importantly, the flavors we're great. We ordered the summer rolls, tom yum soup, pad thai, eggplant thai basil stir fry, and green curry with mahi mahi. Each was delicious. The green curry wasn't too sweet as it can be. We ordered everything medium spicy and it had the right amount if spice without being too hot. Would definitely recommend both sunset at the top of the Volcano and then stopping here on your way back to Hilo or Kona for a delicious, hearty meal.

Disclaimer: I've only been to Thailand once, to Bangkok, where I fell in love with all the excellent food that is Thai food. Since then, I've been hitting up all the well-reviewed Thai places in my hometown Vancouver, Canada. Sadly, none of them were as good as Thai Thai. I've noticed that there are a ton of Thai restaurants in Big Island, but did not expect that a Thai restaurant in little Volcano would have such authentic Thai food. Ordered Pad Thai, Tom Yum noodle soup, Thai iced tea, Thai ice coffee, and a single mango sticky rice for dessert. Bf and I were super stuffed afterward - not sure why some reviewers said portions were small? Pad Thai was made with tamarind instead of ketchup (seems common in Hawaii, on the mainland a lot of restaurants do ketchup), with a good amount of peanuts, Tom Yum soup had lots of galangal, lemongrass, fresh basil, chili and lots of flavour, Thai iced drinks sweet to heck as always, and the sticky rice in the dessert was tricolour, which reminded me of the same dessert I had in Thailand :) Service was quick, friendly and attentive. We had 3 servers circulating around the restaurant, always on the lookout for empty water glasses. We were checked on a couple of times during dinner, not too intrusive. The only boo boo with service is when a waiter took our dessert order and another waiter came over after 10 seconds to ask us if we would care for dessert. The waitress warned us about ordering hot, saying they take spiciness seriously and that I should dial one level back. I took her advice and was glad I did - the medium had plenty of kick already! Yes it was a bit pricey, but considering the fact that we're in the middle of nowhere and the quality of the food we were served, I was perfectly happy to cough up the extra $. Overall, super happy and very surprised to have found such an authentic and delicious meal in pretty much the middle of nowhere!! I just wished a restaurant like Thai Thai would open in Vancouver :(

the spouse and I dropped for a late lunch yesterday.I had the Thai Basil Chicken with Medium spice and a cold Singha. Wasn't expecting much since it was one of only a handful of restaurants in the area. I was very pleased with my dish. Plenty of veggies and plenty of chicken. I'll probably go back for lunch today and try some noodles. My husband had the pad thai and it it was the good kind (not that gross orange/red version that is sickeningly sweet). he ordered it mild and discovered he'd like a bit of heat. They brought him some home-made sambal ooleck that was world rocking. Yes, it was a bit high priced for Thai food but this is Hawaii and everything costs a little bit more here.

  • Emme K.

Service was friendly here, but the prices are quite high for food that was just okay. It was nice to find this restaurant after a day of hiking at the volcanoes. The curry spice level is weak - definitely not spicy! This place is huge and they have options for kids.

    (3)
  • Maria S.

Very friendly, efficient service, excellent food, and the space is open and well decorated. Meat is fresh, especially the chicken and prawns. You get the level of spice you ask for. Many places see that I'm white and they tone it down. Not these guys. Unless you were raised on spicy dishes, you probably shouldn't get "Thai hot", or not even "hot". The tom yum and Thai iced tea were good.

  • Heather N.

Let me start with this----I don't normally eat a lot of Thai food. That said, for an uneducated Thai palate, I really liked my dinner. I had the green curry with chicken and thought it was mighty tasty! I pretty much devoured the whole thing. The SO had Thai steak, and I thought it was pretty darn good! The seasoning was yummy (though I admit I don't know if it was authentic) and the cut off beef was very tender. I'd happily eat here again. The service was very friendly and attentive.

We were on our way to the Volcano in Hilo and the only restaurant open on Thursday the 1st Jan. We thought it was going to be pricey and touristy but it was actually quite good. The eggplant basil stir fry at hot spicy level was almost perfect (only abit too salty). Second best was the fried rice which was very tasty with a decent amount of chicken. We also tried the pad kee mau which was not too bad.

Service is a little odd at this joint. They mean well, but it can be a little annoying. They kind of can't leave you alone to order. I was asked about 5 times if we were ready by 3 different people in a span of like 5 minutes. Sometimes you just need a couple minutes to decide what you'd like to eat without being interrupted 10 times. We then ordered appetizers which took a little bit and when they arrived literally 2 minutes later our main dishes came. I asked they hold it because we literally were just starting to eat our apps. So then 2 minutes later they bring it anyways... But overall, the food was pretty authentic and tasted good. Not overly expensive given the local options, so we had a nice dinner...it's just a little bit of an odd place. The decor in the restaurant too. But it's fine and among the better options you'll find in town.

Maybe the best Thai food I've ever had, and I've had a lot. My boyfriend said it was the best he's had outside of Thailand. The veggies were fresh and the flavors were off the charts. We had the basil stir fry and massaman curry. If you can't handle spicy food make sure you get mild because our medium was SPICY.

So I was thinking just 2 stars but the food was tasty so that pushed me over. Starting with the food, mahi mahi curry and pad Thai noodles were both super tasty and good. Like I said the food is where the stars come from- they don't need any fixing there. The service was a total mess though. A spicy Mai tai (Mai tai with a chili pepper floating in it) took longer than the keiki meal to come out. Then the orders came out at all different times all taking about 10 minutes in between. The mahi curry was warm, not hot as if it was sitting on the counter waiting to be served. They looked all mixed up with the different tickets and were not familiar with the specials posted out front. Our last item took so long we cancelled it and they didn't even have it started. Expediter, you can pack your knives and leave.

Why I love it: The basil eggplant stir fry and the ginger stir fry are among the best Thai dishes I've had. You'd need to head to e.g. Seattle's Thai Siam to match them. Savory, intense flavor, fresh vegetables, perfectly cooked meat. The basil eggplant pork managed perfectly textured seared eggplant and perfectly cooked pork loin. Warning: They cook with ghost chilis. Spice levels are not a joke. They go up to 10; "medium" is 6-7, "hot" 8-9. My normal heat preference lies between "are you sure about that?" and "you better not sue me, white man". Medium plus two spoons of chili paste was almost too hot for me. Amusing note: I was in Volcano for the first time 15 years ago. I think this restaurant's in the old hardware store. The layout is somewhat bizarre, as you might expect.

This place was amazing. Great price for great food. I honestly felt like I could have eaten off the floor in the bathroom because it was so clean. Our service there was also a highlight! We ordered Pad Thai with chicken, spring rolls, and the panang curry with shrimp...two thumbs up! I have been to Thailand multiple times and this is an authentic place that would make any Thai person proud. Their hot is kinda like Thai hot for most places...the server explained that to me, so I went with the medium and added just a tiny bit of their pepper sauce. We will make Thai restaurant a must do every time we visit the volcanoes!

  • Nancy S.

Loved the eggplant! Everything else was just okay. Turned off by the $6 charge to split a meal - so an extra empty plate costs the restaurant that much? Rice kind of dry, nothing special. The food was good, but... kind of pricey. Plenty of water refills, which was great since we'd spent an afternoon exploring the Volcano & area. Friendly staff. They're the only place open for dinner on Monday night (other than the lodge in the park)...

Very very good Thai food up in Volcano Village! This is a cute place with comfortable and friendly atmosphere. The Thai basil was excellent as was the green curry. The only reason I am rating 4 stars is that rice portions are really small. $3 per order of sticky rice and the portion was tiny. Other than that, this place is a winner!

I can't wrap my head around the other reviews on yelp that call this place's food bland..... It was the furthest thing from bland. My husband and I came here for our second night in the area and we each got a curry dish- I got Penang curry and he got the special pineapple curry with seafood. We are from the East Coast, NY and Philly, and there are plenty of Thai places owned and operated by Thai families and none of the places we have ever been has had curry as flavorful as what we ate tonight. I don't know if it was the obviously fresh local veggies, or the local coconuts but we both ate till we felt sick because it was so good. Maybe it was a fluke? Or maybe other people expect McDonalds version Thai food and get upset when they order fries at a Thai place and get charged extra....in a destination location where everything is higher priced.... I do not really know. All I know is I wish I could have Grub Hub deliver this crap to my house. So. Good. Try. The. Curry. Oh, the decor is entertaining too. This town is one street worth of a few small establishments. Enjoy the Twin Peaks-esque lodge interior and the friendly happy staff. They are sweet. (and HOT means HOT here. For reals.)

Everything about this restaurant is a surprise, and all the surprises were good. You find this place by looking for a Hardware Store sign. The two businesses are linked somehow. An extensive menu, a free hand with the spices but a good early warning system, and fabulous flavors. We were with a large party and everyone was really happy with what they got. Prices are moderate. Full bar. You would never expect a restaurant of this quality on a little road near Kilauea, but Surprise!

Excellent dinner! We had the spring rolls, panang curry and cashew chicken with jasmine and sticky rice! I live on Oahu and have not found a Thai place as good as this one! Absolutely delicious! The staff was super friendly too!

One of the best restaurants on the Big Island. Volcano is where you'd expect to find such good food but Thai Thai is the place. There are few places to eat near or in the Volcanoes National Park but this is the best. Excellent Pad Thai and curries. Their food compares well with other Thai restaurants in California. The staff is very polite and helpful. They ask how hot you want each dish - choose carefully!

Although my green curry was pretty good, it was way too hot. They have "mild, medium, hot, and Thai-hot". I ordered it mild and I could barely get through the meal, and the meal upset my stomach for hours afterward and my tongue felt burned. No joke. My husband got a "medium hot" pad Thai and it was almost inedible because it was so hot. The cook at this place needs to learn an actual range of heat and not just full blast hot. It is unacceptable to me to make food that is inedible because you don't understand what your customers want. Not everyone likes spicy food.

This just might be the best food option there is in Volcano.... though I can't say for certain, b/c I didn't actually eat at any of the other establishments. I thought the food was very good. In fact, it was good enough that we got take-out from here our second night in Volcano, after eating-in our first night. The place is very kid friendly (the servers brought crayons, coloring paper, toys, kids spoon and fork, and a cool sippy cup to the table!). Our actual food server, unfortunately, was a little slow/forgetful... In the two nights we ate from Thai Thai, we had: Red Curry Green Curry Masaman Curry Pad Thai Stir-fried Rice Noodles Eggplant and Thai basil Stir-fry with chicken Garlic and Pepper Stir-fry with tofu Honestly, I thought all the dishes were excellent, though the garlic and black pepper with tofu dish was a highlight, as was the rice noodle dish and the red curry. The eggplant and basil was good and I thought the other curries were good as well. As always, Pad Thai was probably my least favorite... oh well. We ordered most of the dishes either "hot" or "Thai hot." The curries seemed to carry or convey their heat more than the other dishes... must be the creamy coconut sauces. We like hot food... though perhaps hot or medium would have been more appropriate spice levels..? The sticky rice that comes with the food is EXCELLENT (some of the best I've had). My main complaint about this place is that the prices seem a little steep for Thai food... and though the portions are decent, they are not overly generous (for the price).

I couldn't believe that we found such great Thai food in Volcano, HI. The only reason they did not get 5 stars is due to the food was TOO HOT. Everyone has their own degree of hot, but their idea of hot is extremely hot. I went through 2 drinks and then started drinking my husband's water. The food was great, but the spice was a bit much and I ordered "medium hot" which in our books was "hot hot". They will warn you about the heat, so take our advice....listen and obey. The service was great and there was plenty of parking.

Try the special house curry - absolutely delicious, though perhaps spicier than you would expect :)

  • Virendra C.

The food is good. It is very spicy. So, if you usually order medium spicy I would suggest order mild spicy here. This place is a little pricey, but there are not many options around and with the good taste of the food I would not mind coming back here. Note: They do charge $5.99 for a split charge for adults if you are sharing dishes.

There are two restaurants that you can have dinner at past 5pm in Volcano (three if you include the one in the National Park), and this is one of them. We had the house Thai Thai curry, the red curry, and the summer rolls. Everything was delicious and well spiced. Portions were great, big but not overwhelming. The service was attentive and friendly. Reasonable prices as well. I could definitely recommend it, and am actually going again tonight!

It would be a 0 if I could figure out how to enter that rating and if I had not known the food was fair. After almost 2 hours and threatening to leave, my friends' family were promised food in 5 minutes, and their food did magically show up in a few minutes. Since we came together and were sitting next to them, we thought our friends also earned our meal right. However, after seeing the next table, who arrived much later than us, got served, I had to ask when we should be expecting our food. The server casually said, properly 40 minutes. I was incredulous, and went to the front desk for a reason. It might have been a mixed up somewhere, but I was not told of any and there was not an apology. I had to cancel my order for principle at 9:00 PM. Everyone visited the national volcano park during Christmas day knew what does that means- there would be no real food for tonight. I wanted my family to have their meal while I waited. Yet, my husband felt obligated to have the family follow my suit. I felt guilty of everyone's hunger especially on Christmas Day and especially after a long day trip, and was very uncomfortable for this first ever experience of walking out of a restraurant. Yet, I do not believe that it is right for a business to knowingly and unapologetically offer bad products, in this case its service. I went in the first gas station that was open during our 2 hour drive back to the hotel, and bought our Christmas meal for 6 for less than $8. It was perhaps the best meal for the family for this trip. It certainly was the most memorable Christmas meal experience.

So happy to have found a place with delicious Thai food, and a kids menu for my picky little eater! The Summer Rolls here are to die for! Wish I could eat them everyday! Pad Thai 3, is great to clear out those sinuses. Quick service from very nice people. Should be #1 on here.

Yesssssss! This place is the best! I would say the best Thai food I have ever had. I got the pad Thai with tofu and my husband got the coconut soup with chicken..both dishes were absolutely wonderful! An added bonus..their cocktails :) We had the lava flow with vodka instead of rum and the Mai tai the presentation was as good as the drink..a little fruit and fresh flower garnish AND an umbrella. After full days of activity this was the best stop to refuel and enjoy cocktails.

I always love paying astronomical prices for restaurants that are located half way between no where and no where and then getting small portions and extremely slow service. This is one of the few restaurants in volcano so they can do what they want is the short of it. That being said, your options are limited and food is decent. We tried the masaman curry, tom ka soup and the stir fry eggplant. Vegetables are fresh but no substitutions and only one credit card per table.

  • Josh M.

you are on a volcano, so you are going to have to pay, and this was expensive for Thai food, especially the seafood option. But they get you on the price, not the quality. The food was good, fresh, and they make it as hot as you want.

Awesome Thai food, super (kid) friendly! Had lunch there and the staff was very friendly even bringing some toys and a nifty sippy cup for our two years old. The food was great and the thee different curries sampled were all both very flavorful and delicious. Loved this place!!

I came here by myself late one drizzly, foggy (I mean, "voggy") night while I was in Volcano. It was the highlight of my evening. My partner fell asleep back at the cabin we rented, and I was damn hungry! So I tried this place and just LOVED it. I had a bottle of white wine, the appetizer (spring rolls) and the Thai basil stir fry with chicken, and I just devoured everything. So delicious. The waitress was concerned about my wine drinking, but I told her that I was fine (and I was)...and after eating I headed right over to the volcano to see the glow of the lava at night! (the park is open 24 hours) So much fun and I remember the meal well and the location. To me, the money was no object for an enjoyable meal. And it shouldn't be...hell you are on vacation people! Highly recommended if you are in town of Volcano.

My husband and I had gone to this restaurant 10 years ago and dreamed of it ever since, so I was worried that the restaurant would not live up to our expectations. It did, in fact so much that we want two nights in a row while in the area visiting the volcano. We especially enjoyed the papaya salad and the mahi mahi curry. We like very hot food, but were glad that we listened to the server's advice and ordered medium. Do not get Thai hot unless you are are from Thailand! The Mai tais were also quite good, but just one is enough. They go down easy, but pack a punch. Definitely go if you like freshly prepared, authentic Thai food and are in the area.

OUT-FREAKING-STANDING!!! Excellent service and excellent food. We had Pad Thai , Thai Basil Stir Fry and Cashew Chicken. Be careful with the heat level. "Medium" is very hot and "Hot" is borderline torture. "Thai Hot" will likely cause a severe case of 'Firarrhea'

Throughout my relatively short life, I like to think I have been to many restaurants in many different locations. Not one of these restaurants sparked such an interesting feeling of joy while observing the other patrons eating around me. The extremely unique mix of people in this restaurant made this place one of the most interesting eateries I have been to in a long time. Adding to the interesting hodgepodge of people was the even more interesting decor on the walls. There were lots of designs and pictures of families or royalty. I challenge anyone out there to find a more diverse mix of people and decor in one restaurant out there. This place will give your example a run for it's money. The food at Thai Thai Restaurant was actually pretty good. My wife and I both got curries, and this is one of the few places that means hot when it says hot on the menu. The quantities were enough to fill me up, but not enough that I felt terrible after eating most of the meal. The service, on the other hand, was only sub par. At times, I felt like we were forgotten at our table in the corner. This forgotten feeling reached its peak when my water was refilled for the first time when I was signing the check. If you are looking for dinner while at Volcanoes National Park, this is a good place to try.

Who would have ever thought in the middle of Kilauea in Hilo that this Thai restaurant would be as good as it is. I ordered the green curry & stir fry eggplants which were both equally very very good. I can't speak for the rest of the menu, but I would be hard press not to think that the whole menu wouldn't be as good as these two. If you are looking for authentic Thai food or if you are just looking for a good meal, this place is one of the best, if not the best, Thai restaurants I have ever eaten at. I would give it 4 1/2 stars if I could!

This is one of the better food options in Volcano (you're limited to a handful). We ordered the pad thai and the spicy noodles to go. Both dishes were okay. The spicy noodles were greasy and both dishes were a bit bland. Not the worst Thai food I've ever had but certainly not close to the best, and the dishes were pricey at $15 each.

This was my first time having Thai food, I don't know why I've never tried it before. For a first experience it was amazing. Everything tasted really great! My favorite was the eggplant stir fry with tofu :) yum! The people working they were great too! They were all very friendly! The food didn't leave me feeling heavy after a greasy meal like other places would as well. Its a great eat after a iki trail hike :)

Great food with lots of flavor. Large portions! We tried a wide range of dishes; soups, curries, etc. We had a large group and everyone enjoyed their meals. Best part of the meal, and the reason I am giving them 5 stars was the service. Jade waited on us and could not have been a more pleasant and attentive person. We will definitely be back any time we visit Volcano National Park.

I was starving when arriving in volcano state park and needed food ASAP. Looked at yelp and the closest one was thai thai. I am so glad we went into this kinda kitch looking restaurant! It was super delish! The basil stir fry was so soooo good and I went to thailand 5 months ago. It was very close to the real thing!

Ok, so here's the skinny. Obviously there are VERY few options for dining in Volcano. We skipped lunch today to go to the park, so we were even more limited for open restaurants at 3:30pm. We tried Thai Thai based solely on the Yelp reviews (compared to other places open at 3:30). We had MANY problems with this place. First, they charge a $6 split plate fee... Seriously? Second, Tom Yum soup is $15; ok, no problem. Want shrimp? Be prepared to pay $26. What? This was the case with every dish. Shrimp is a $10+ up charge. Ridiculous. Next, our soup came out with our meals. This, while not the end of the world, seemed a bit odd. Next, after placing our order our server disappeared. We did not get checked on once for the 40-60 minutes after we placed our order. After tracking down an employee ourselves to order a drink (Long Island Iced Tea), the women congregating around the kitchen went around in circles trying to figure out what it was and how to make it. After a few minutes they came out with a layered drink that was glowing yellow on bottom and chocolatey brown covering 80% of the space above. It looked like a glass of Kahula over top of Mountain Dew. It was OBVIOUS this was a disaster of a drink. I asked the server to stick around while I tasted it. Through her constant cajoling, I tasted from the top half and the bottom half. I couldn't tell what the chocolate colored top was made from, but the glow stick Mountain Dew was straight sour mix. Gross. I told the server the drink didn't look right, and certainly didn't taste right. She immediately apologized and took it back, obviously knowing they screwed up. Our original server then a appeared, asking the girls if they would like him to make the drink (he made our first drink (Mai Tai) pretty well. They declined. After a bunch of fuss in the kitchen, the woman comes back saying 'we are not going to remake this... You had a Mai Tai first, now a Long Island... This is how it is made; you just don't like Long Island'... REALLY- I've had hundreds and hundreds of LIT's from dozens of places over the years. I know what a Long Island is. Disgusting attitude and service!!! The 2* is for the food. It's not bad. Soup was nice and basil entree was nice. Pricing and service get Negative stars. Food gets 3.5 stars. Worst part of it all might be that I still tipped over 15%. Kicking myself for that now.

We came for lunch and the large place was quiet, open, breezy and had a pleasant atmosphere! We got the Thai Thai special coconut curry chicken ($16) and pad Thai with fresh mahi mahi ($26). Portions were ample and the food very very tasty. Medium spicy was mor like what Most restaurants serve as hot, but nothing crazy! Service was great too! We Could not have asked for better after 11 miles of hiking before noon!!!

  • Paul S.

Food was good, but kinda expensive for a thai restaurant. My wife and I ordered the Pad Thai was pretty good...they did not tell us for 6 people there is a 20% tip. The man at the cashier was very rude..

  • Leila J.

Food was super bland!!! No taste. Service was bad, waited 15 minutes to have our order taken when there was only one other family eating when we got there. Two other couples came in after us and got their orders taken first. We actually were seconds away from getting up and leaving. Then the waitress asked us if we were carb loading (we ordered pad Thai and stir fry). When we were finished she asked us "wow where did all the food go? You guys destroyed it" I told her we were just really hungry and asked for the Check. I promise we didn't "destroy" it bc it was good. Just really hungry from the days activities! My husband said his stir fry tasted like boiled rice and pork. My pad Thai tasted like plain noodles w some peanuts added. I do not recommend!

Had the Fresh Spring Rolls, a Thai Iced Tea and the Green Curry. Some of the best thai food I've had in the world!! Totally impressed. Definitely the best green curry I've ever had, and I eat a lot of green curry all over the world at thai restaurants.

Came here for a meet-the-family dinner with my boyfriend's mom and sister. They had all been here the night before and the staff remembered, which was nice because although it was very welcoming as is that added a nice touch of familiarity. On to the food, boyfriend's mom had the Tum Ka. It was kind of cool that the soup remains warmed by sitting on a bowl with a flame in it (I realize that is a terrible description...but all the more reason to find out what I'm talking about, right?). My boyfriend had the Thai Thai Curry Special. His sister and I both had the Pad Thai, her's without egg and peanuts, and it looked delicious! I tried as best I could to eat everything on my plate, but couldn't. I ordered my Pad Thai with tofu and it was scrumptious. I'm looked forward to eating here again and ever so slowly venturing into Thai cuisine. Also, the decor inside is so cute. I'm a sucker for glitter and sparkle so this was right up my alley.

To start, this place is WAY overpriced. I ordered the spring rolls first. They were good. I ordered the special curry for my meal. I didn't like it. The waiter came by to ask me how it was. I said I didn't like it. He said, sorry but we can't do anything once you have touched it. I thought, okay then why did you ask how it was when you only have one option: either you like it and pay for it, or you don't like it and pay for it?!? I asked him why he couldn't take it off my bill, i clearly didn't eat much of it. He said it was his managers policy. So basically, you are price gouging to begin with and then you have a terrible customer service policy?!? I will never return.

  • Tasha A.

The food was a little pricey, with even appetizers running up bills in the teens to twenty dollars. The food was generally good, though - I was a fan of the yellow curry, and my sister swears by the Pad Kee Mao. The eggplant/tofu dish was also quite tasty. Its proximity to Volcano National Park made it a great stop while we waited for the sun to set over the crater.

Thai Thai is a very casual place In the small block town of volcano. We are here several times and loved the generous portion of summer rolls with excellent veggies and Thai basil. The stir fry was fresh in a light tasty broth sauce. We tried several curry dishes and all were excellent and unique from each other. The wide noodle pad Thai was outstanding. Service was prompt and attentive. Definitely will go back.

We had an OK meal there. The service was slow, very slow. My Thai Basil Stir Fry was spicy enough, but bland. The veges were fresh, which I enjoyed. My son's Pad Thai was also quite bland. I would never return to this restaurant in my home town, but there are limited choices in Volcano Village and it was fine for one meal.

Visited the Volcano National Park and stayed in the town of Volcano for 2 nights. Came here and got takeout the first night-spring rolls, pad thai, and chicken satay, as well as jasmine rice. Portions were fairly large-in fact we had some pad thai and satay left over for the next night. The rice order for 2 was actually enough for 4. We were going to eat somewhere else the next night, but most of the cafes were only open for lunch until 3 or 4 pm or they were too pricey( the Rim restaurant and the Lodge) so we ended up at Thai Thai again. Got another order or pad thai to go with our leftovers from the night before-so good ! The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that it is a little expensive for a Thai restaurant, but hey, you are in a small town on the island of Hawaii without many food options. Just glad Thai Thai was there for us!

  • Melissa B.

Best thai food on the island of Hawaii. The summer rolls and beef salad are a must try!

Great (really) Thai food (every last dish) but very pricey... Eat family-style here. Share the exorbitantly expensive stuff (chicken satay) with other people or don't order it. Would be 5 stars but for the very high prices...

Oh boy oh boy oh boy soooooo gooooooooodddd!!! My tummy so happy!!! Pad Thai noodles were wonderful. Hot Beef red curry unbelievable. Chicken green curry soooo delicious. I can not wait to come back to try more on the menu. Love this place!

Suprisingly good food at a reasonable price. Way better than the restaurant at the Volcano House Hotel. They can totally try to rip you off considering there aren't that many other choices nearby, but they didn't. Their Thai ice tea was legit, their noodle soup was legit and their Pad Thai was very good as well. Highly recommended. I ate there twice while I was visiting the national park.

The food here was really good. I wasn't expecting to find much next to the volcano, but I was pleasantly surprised. I'd definitely recommend this place if you're hungry and didn't pack a substantial enough lunch for all the volcano exploring.

This was a very homey family owned restaurant! Dinner consist of chicken pad thai and Chicken basil which was YUM!!! I love how the flavor blend and how you can taste everything...the flavor exploded in your mouth! You can tell the place is visited by the locals and the locals up at the Volcano park suggested the place to dine. So if you are up at the Volcano park and need to grab dinner, this is the place! I would definitely go back and make it a must visit place each time!

Needed a quick lunch before getting back to the sights in Volcano National Park and Thai Thai was perfect. It about 1 mile from the front gate but with better prices and food than you'd expect. I got the special recipe curry with coconut milk and tofu -- my daughter got the same with chicken -- both came away happy. My wife got the pad Thai and said that it was nothing special. Overall, I'd eat there again!

The ambiance is a weird mix of Thailand meets ABC store, but it's one of the few dinner spots in Volcano, and well, my boyfriend and I had gone through all the bagels we'd picked up from KTA. So Thai Thai it was. Service hums along to its own pace (i.e. molasses-like), but the food is surprisingly good. Not earth-shattering, but the spring rolls were standard fare and the yellow curry was very delicious. I love Thai coffee, so I ordered that against my better judgment of having a dangerously high combination of sugar and caffeine in the evening, but it was so sweet I actually couldn't finish it. Slight disappointment there, but it didn't spoil my meal as a whole at all. All in all -- it's one of the more interesting dining options in the sleepy town, and a nice stopover before driving over to the Park and viewing the crater at night.

After avoiding this place for 18 months, I finally ate here, and yes begrudgingly I will go 4 stars "I'm a fan". After showing two friends around the volcano for the afternoon, they wanted dinner before driving back to Waimea. Choices in Volcano are limited and prices everywhere are high due to the lack of competition. But based on what I've read on Yelp we went to Thai Thai. My friends loved it. First off, the decor inside and out is a hot mess. Outside the roof is loaded with LED icicles hanging from the roof... inside with a maze of rooms from their expansions and a gift shop, and every wall dripping with the prerequisite pictures of Thai royalty. Classy? No. Entertaining and quaint ? Yes. The food was delicious. Yes, several dollars more per dish than equivalent Thai restaurants in Hilo, but it was excellent. Panang curry was delicious. Eggplant with basil was best I've had on the Big Island. Green papaya salad (my obsession) was very good.... but as with much of the menu, pricing was whacked. Plain green papaya salad was $11 (at most places in Hilo it's $7-$9) but add shrimp to the salad and it jumps to $24.95 !?!? I almost wanted to order it to see if they're gold plated shrimp or something. There were some fairly affordable choices ... and then others that were inexplicably astronomically priced. Service was excellent... all Thai servers ,and very attentive and caring... we must have been asked a dozen times how we liked everything. Water glass refilled promptly. So why did I refuse to eat here for 18 months? Well, because so many local Volcano people had told me they refused to give a dime to the husband and wife (wife runs restaurant) who have developed this previously unbuilt old-growth-forested property from nothing into ... everything.... restaurant, laundromat, hardware store, soon-to-be brew pub... hugely expanding over the last decade into an ugly asphalt paved mecca of high-priced entrepreneurialism. Locals' reasons for not wanting to spend a dime at these business were all over the map.... not just "anti-development".... but when you hear people say that often enough it does stick. I personally had always found it irritating and disingenuous that the owners faked a brown state highway information sign pointing into their property directing tourists to a rest area with food and lodging etc only to find just a private business and private gift shop with some brochures and an ATM. Anything for a buck is the impression. Sigh. I didn't discuss any of that with my vacationing friends... I just wanted them to enjoy themselves... and they loved Thai Thai. The food at Thai Thai was good and the servers were likeable. I guess I'll be going back.

If the restaurant is very crowded, I do suggest you leave! It took us 30 minutes to wait for a table and once we had ordered, it took us 2 hours to get our food. However, the staff was nice and truly tried their hardest but two hours is crazy for pretty good food. The garlic eggplant with chicken was a very nice meal. We also ordered the chu chi pla which was not Thai at all. The pad see ew was not fantastic either. Do consider that it was very full today, but if you have a time constraint and the restaurant if full, DO NOT GO! Otherwise it is ok!

For the middle of a Volcano, this Thai place is amazing. I've had a lot of Thai in my life and this place ranks as some of the best I've had. Prices are a bit high but that's just how Hawaii is and I think this is one of the places were it's worth it. I came here three times during my stay at Volcano (we were doing work in the park) so I've tried a majority of things on the menu: Northern Style Thai Salad with chicken: one of our go to favorites. It's not your average salad though so be aware of that Pad Thai Noodles: Good but nothing totally mindblowing Pad See Ew: This dish fluctuates. The first time it wasn't so great and the second time, it was AMAZING Pad Kee Mao: SO delicious. If you're going to order one of the stir fried noodles, I'd get this one Thai Sweet and Sour and Ginger Root Stir fry: These dishes are pretty good. My friends loved both but I'm not a huge fan of sweet and sour or ginger so I kind of have a biased opinion Panang Curry: GET THIS ONE. It's so, so good. Mahi Mahi curry: This dish is good but you don't get very much fish for what you pay for Always get the sticky rice if you have a choice! :) We all enjoy spicy foods and were happy getting everything medium spicy. Bottom line: if you're in the area and you're hungry - come here!

WARNING: "spicy" here translates to fire emitting, throat burning, tear stream inducing food. I still call it food because at a normal spice level it would probably be pretty good. I couldn't enjoy much after my tongue caught fire, but can certainly vouch for the Thai iced tea and peanut sauce (which I doused the fiery dishes with) being excellent. Moderate to pricey depending on what you order. Seafood curries/noodles are pricey at $26.

The food here is very good and very authentic. But pricey. I was expecting exorbitant prices in this tourist destination, plus it being the only restaurant open after 5pm when we were at Volcano, but it was still a shock to see their prices listed on the menu. The portions are ginormous, however, so that mitigated the shock factor. We received excellent service and every single one of the dishes we ordered was delicious (we had 12 people in our party, so we had a variety of stuff to try), including pad thai, fried rice, pad kee mow, pad see yew, green curry, yellow curry, ginger stir fried veggies, and eggplant. I guess if given the choice between an overprices but tasty Thai restaurant or a cheap greasy spoon restaurant as my only dinner options in a ghost town, I'd choose this place hands down. But that's not to say I was happy about it.

So as we left the restaurant, my friend said, looking at the door backwards, "wait. It's not Thai Thai. It's Thai...Thai Restaurant." Maybe delirium had set in, but it made us laugh pretty hard. One of those random jokes that continues to play on, I guess. She got the summer rolls and although they seemed fresh, she said they left something to be desired. I got the green curry. The veggies in it were delicious and made me happy to eat vegetables. I ordered it "mild to medium" on the spice level and it was pretty darn spicy. Not so spicy that I couldn't eat it, but enough that it made my ears tickle a little bit. It was spicy enough that I needed more water. There was only one other table seated in the restaurant at the time and I kept trying to catch the waiter's eye. I finally went up to the bar area to ask him for more water. I do love green curry. If I'm ever lucky enough to go back to Volcano, I'd suggest it.

I have to write a review, not that they need it; obviously most people really like the food, and reading down the pages lots of people have described the menu choices. I have to write a review to respond to John S.'s review. "...and every wall dripping with the prerequisite pictures of Thai royalty. Classy? No." Dear John, the pictures are the two children of the owners, a young girl and boy. The same two you can see on the front of all the menus and the same two you can see waiting tables and busing. They are a few years older and I must say, cute as can be. THEIR pictures are the "prerequisite Thai royalty!" And the comments about the "locals" boycotting the place because of the expansions remind me of when Longs Drugs went in in Pahoa. There was some demonstrators with signs and the comments on PunaWeb pretty much accurately described them as malahini (new comers in Hawaiian) mainland ha'ole hippies who think that preserving quaint little Pahoa is a good idea, as must be driving to Hilo to shop! The "locals" were all for more shopping choices in Puna. I would be interested if any of the "locals" he mentioned were "Born here, not Flown here." Now enough of that, the restaurant itself. We often have family or friends visiting from the Mainland or Asia (or O'ahu etc etc) and we usually take them to Thai Thai. The food for us has always been good. And I agree, be VERY careful. Only my daughter who lived in Szechuan China can handle the Thai hot, and I made the mistake of ordering the sweet and sour medium hot and WOW was it hot!!! I ate most of it, weeping and choking, and used the leftovers to spice up a big dish of fried rice a day or two later. There is some confusion; I was told that there is mild, medium, hot, and Thai hot and it's on a scale of 1 - 10, 3, 6, 9, and 12! Next time I'll order really really really wimpy mild! I'll ask for .01 hot. And it is kid friendly, with coloring books and such for the little ones. And it would get a 5 star if the service equaled the food - though I will add, for The Big Isle, the service is better than a lot of places. There are a lot of wonderful things about the people here. If you smile and say hi to a giant tattoo'd Hawaiian man I'd wage dollar to donuts he'll smile back and be real friendly. Camping and hanging around beach parks we've been offered beer, fish, poi, rum, pot, fried rice, sausage and so forth (we now carry bags of macadamia nuts to hand out after being embarrassed a few times by generous locals - and this includes the "dangerous" parks that some haoles say keep away from as the locals will beat you up!!). But efficient and attentive aren't exactly words anyone uses to describe people and culture here...

I did not give it 5 stars because of two reasons. I did not get my drink until we had finished our meal, and yes, I asked the staff a couple of times as to the status. Second, it's a little pricy for Thai food - or what I'm used to. Now, the well deserved 4 stars is because the food is delicious! Great flavors. I recommend the selected local eggplant basil dish with tofu. The "family size" tapioca desert with taro and corn (yes, corn) was also super yummy.

Yummy thai food in a place you wouldn't expect it. Pad thai and yellow curry were both very good.

I eat Thai food often in So. California so the food here is not as good in comparison esp. for the price, lacking in spices and flavors (other than a couple basil leaves and coconut milk). Portions are small, served as individual entrees with a single bowl of rice, not family style. Menu says they charge $4.99 to split an entree between adults. I ordered stir-fry chicken with mixed assorted vegetables for my son and asked for it to be non-spicy, but it was spicier than my curry which tasted ordinary.

  • Dena S.

The papaya salad was good but I'm not sure I would order it again. We had the pad see ew and it was only mediocre. It didn't really have a Thai taste. Their house chili was decent, probably my favorite part of the meal. The tapioca desert was good too, but I was sad to hear they microwaved it to warm it up. Lame. We were the only people there so service was great.

  • Sarah B.

I was surprised at how good this was -- given the location, they could get away with being terrible and would probably still get plenty of business. My massaman curry was really excellent -- lovely deep flavours. The thai iced tea was good too, and my boyfriend really enjoyed his ginger stir fry. Prices are high, even for Hawaii, and the service was very slow -- it took FOREVER to get the bill. Still, it was a great massaman curry.

The service here is awful. We never received our drinks and our extremely rude waitress ignored us for most of the meal. It took 45 minutes to get our meals. Don't bother with poor service and mediocre food.

Traveler beware. Although there are few options for dining in Volcano, you will want to steer clear of this restaurant. Dinner service was disorganized and at a point my table was visited by 5 different servers. My noodle entree was very mediocre. The noodles were an over cooked soggy mess and the vegetables were bland. Overall it was an overpriced disappointment. Want good affordable Thai food? Check out Tuk Tuk instead.

Two thumbs up to the service and food. The curry dishes are suburb and Thai Hot is really hot. We've been here a couple time over the years and the food has been very consistent.

It's really unfortunate to read all of these bad reviews on the restaurant's service and pricing. I actually had a great experience here and didn't even realize there was a $5+ surcharge for splitting plates. We went there with four people and ordered three (pretty yummy) plates and one Thai iced tea and paid $60 with tip...so I don't think they charged us that surcharge. The decor and service is pretty on par with what I expect a Thai restaurant to be like - nothing overwhelmingly amazing, but maybe that's just me. At these kinds of restaurants it's really all about the food, no frills. It was a surprisingly good experience for being in the middle of nowhere. But, I suppose just be wary that service can significantly different depending on when you visit according to the other reviews on here.

Pros: -Close to park entrance -Slightly better than the café that is down the street Cons: -The place smells like feet. -They charge you 5.99 for sharing dishes. -Prices are inflated to begin with. There are a few more restaurants nearby. Bottom line...go here if you have absolutely no other options and are starving after your hike.

Located just outside Volcanoes National Park, Thai Thai Restaurant is one of only a handful of restaurants in the area so choices are very limited. Luckily Thai Thai has excellent food and good service. It can get very busy so make reservations if possible or be prepared to wait. The green curry was excellent. It was the perfect blend of spice and heat and the chicken was very good quality.

Nestled in a little village just outside Hawaii National Park, Thai Thai Restaurant is a great way to charge your batteries after a long day of hiking at Hawaii National Park. The food here is a pleasant surprise and since it's become pretty popular, you might want to make a reservation before you arrive. While timing can be hit or miss - sometimes the wait can be long - you can entertain yourself by checking out the kitschy Thai decor around the building. We spotted lots of wooden elephants in one corner, portraits of King Bhumibol Adulyadej, traditional Thai dolls on the top of the bar and even paper fish made with Thai bahts! And if you stare at all the family photos long enough, you might recognize the owner and her daughter. They are often busy, but will stop and chat with customers. The Thai iced tea ($3) was a bit on the sweet side but definitely the real deal. The curries, thankfully for my sister and I, both vegetarians, have no fish sauce. You can request how spicy you'd like your curry, but beware, err on the side of caution; even 'mild' would be too much for most! I do admit that the green curry was amazing, laden with lots of vegetables. I practically drank the curry until the bowl was empty! It was definitely authentic and reminded me of my backpacking days, lounging in the grungy hostels on Khao San Road. The sticky rice was a bit on the uncooked side but was fine. It's too bad I was too full for dessert; I wouldn't mind trying out the Hilo-made ice cream or the tapioca dish for dessert. Will be returning next time I visit the Big Island. VEGETARIANS/VEGANS: The curries do not contain fish sauce. Just let them know you want it without chicken stock too. They are very accommodating for special diets. TOURISTS: Pick up a guidebook or a macadamia nut necklace at the back. There's a fully-stocked gift shop in the restaurant. If you're looking for a place to stay, there are also hotel rooms available. 4.5/5 stars

Stopped in to Thai Thai after a 2 hour drive from Kona to Volcano to power up before hitting the trails at Volcano National Park and it was a wise choice. The lunch crowd was far and few between so we got fast service, personable staff and a great meal. Between the two of us we had the Summer Rolls, Pad Thai, Pad Kee Mao, and Thai Coffee. The summer rolls are light, yet tasty and the portion size was worth the price. The main courses were very good and they give you chili sauce (thai hot!) on the side to spice up your dish. Again, portions were plentiful and service was very good. Total bill with tip was about $50.

I think we had spicy green papaya salad, curry, and pad thai; everything was excellent. It's a giant, strange building, and service was a little slow at first, but those minor worries went away when we got our food. We'd definitely stop in again.

Unexpectedly good Thai, souvenirs available in the restaurant (a little weird to stare at as your eating). VERY SPICY!!! The medium had my heat-loving boyfriend red and sweating! Knocked down a star bc they messed up our take out order the second night and some of the servers are a little on the rude side. Pricey for Thai.

YOUR WAITER WAS A LIAR!!! I ordered a curry and asked about the spice level. Waiter said 'very spicy is VERY spicy. It's a 20/10!!!' So I ordered medium spice. I LOVE spicy food... And a medium didn't even register on my spice palate. Not even a .5-er. Overall the food was good-- esp if you like creamy curries rather than thin ones. Would I go again? Sure! It's a great stop before the volcano adventure/stargazing!

There's nothing wrong with this place, but there's nothing really right about it either. It was the only place in town open on the Monday I was around (because apparently all of Volcano is closed on Monday), so I went there out of default. My pad see ew tasted fine, but was a little atypical - the recipe doesn't usually call for cauliflower, carrots and other veggies, but I guess it worked. The portions were a little small, especially for the price, so if you're coming after a long day of hiking you may want to opt for some appetizers to start. Overall, its a fine place to eat, but I wouldn't seek it out.

The food at this place was fantastic, and the service was great. It's adjacent to a True Value hardware store and a laundry mat, festooned in icicle lights. Quirky but fun. And a good meal. Unless you really like spicy food, you're definitely going to want to go with "small hot" when they ask how spicy you want your entree.

Superb Thai food! Really, some of the best curry I've had since Thailand. Our table split the papaya salad which was excellent and gone very quickly; it had great flavor and lots of lemons. For my entree, I had the green "hot" tofu/veggie curry, which was quite spicy, but still enjoyable. I really enjoyed that there were TONS of great veggies (even sweet potato) and nicely cooked tofu. My only warning is that this is one of the most popular restaurants in Volcano Village (and there aren't many), so if there are crowds or tour groups, there could be a wait.

this place is super weird just like all of volcano village. however, that's what gives this place some of its charm. the food is very good and the servers are so very attentive. highly recommend stopping here while spending time at the national park. there aren't a ton of options around here but this is definitely a winner. ignore the decor though, it's extremely odd.

    (4)
  • Bobby C.

Not too many options if you are staying in the Volcano area. The green curry and Pad Sea Eaw were decent. We did take-out so I can't really comment on the service. The place gets pretty busy on Friday evenings. Food was decent, pricing could be better.

Ordered chicken satay and summer rolls for carry out. Ready on time. Super fresh ingredients in the rolls. However chicken satay was some weird noodle and chicken dish? I didn't take it back, I thought maybe I screwed up in ordering or the menu changed?

Took over an hour to get food on a not particularly busy night. Food was decent but overpriced. All the tables around us were looking miserable and bored, several complained, so I don't think it was me being impatient.

Excellent Thai with great flavors. A little skimpy on the rice portion, but otherwise a solid place. We had Massaman pork to go, and ate overlooking the Kilauea caldera. Medium spice should be enough for most folks... maybe even too much. LOL Very tasty.

    (4)
  • Billy A.

Service ok, but the portions are extremely small, all starting at 12.99 for "family style". Made sure the kids got their fill by eating everything with rice. Should've taken friends advice and brought food up with us.

Best Thai food we have ever eaten was found in the tiny town of Volcano! We stayed in the area for 3 nights and ate there for dinner each night. Flavorful, fresh, and not greasy. Spring rolls, summer rolls, Pad Thai, Tom Kha soup, Sweet & Sour chicken. All absolutely delicious. Service was attentive and friendly.

  • Carl B.

Good Thai restaurant outside the National Park in Volcano Village. We had the Stir Fry Basil with Pork and Tom Kha Soup with Chicken. Both were freshly prepared and just the right amount of spice. Dessert was an excellent sticky rice with Mango. Good variety of Thai beers, as well as the locals and domestics. Just a bit expensive, but value was solid and there are not many restaurants in and around the park. Excellent service and staff. Recommend arriving early for dinner.

We recently had a wonderful meal here. I don't understand the complaints about the prices. I agree that in a location where there are a dozen Thai places to choose from the meal prices might be slightly lower. This place is located in a wilderness where the food choices are extremely limited and yet they provide locally sourced fresh vegetables and what was the most fabulous tofu we have ever had, all at a reasonable price. Our dinners with a bottle of wine probably cost $10 more than a similar meal in town would have cost, and having eaten at several Thai places in Kona I think this place is better. If I had to make one negative comment it would be that they only offer refined white rice or refined sticky white rice. Nobody should be eating unhealthy refined grains and we regretted not being able to order brown rice. That was our sole complaint. As Yvette said, the spice levels are 1-10. We ordered ours in the 6-8 range and it was perfect for our taste. I'd call it American Hot at that level. They supply a chilli sauce they make on the side so you can add more heat if you want. We didn't need to. Given the rural location and lack of other choices we thought this place was a treasure trove of excellent food for our vegetarian tastes. I clicked on "Has TV" in the ratings, but when we were there for dinner they had pleasant music playing at an appropriate level and the TV thankfully was off. David

  • S E.

The massaman curry and ginger stir fry had very good flavors with a nice amount of heat that built enjoyably through the meal. The Thai ice tea was fairly tasty and provided good balance. The prices were a little high and the service was a bit slow (there was only one greeter/server). I might have given the restaurant three stars if it were in a city but, for a place convenient to a national park in the middle of a rural island, it totally did the trick.

  • Lauren A.

I don't know why everyone is dogging on Thai Thai's prices in their review; they serve excellent Thai food in a remote location and there really aren't many other dinner options nearby. We ordered the mahi mahi curry and the chicken pad Thai, both hot. The mahi mahi curry was full of an assortment of fresh vegetables; including green ones! The flavor was spot on, and the heat was just enough light my mouth on fire in the way I like it. The pad Thai wasn't the best we've had before, as we prefer when it is made with tangy tamarind paste, and we didn't get the impression this one was. I gave it four stars because, similar to other people reviews, we didn't get the best service. We ordered take out over the phone, and they said it would be ready in ten minutes. We went down there and ended up waiting for a total of about 40 minutes since we called. However, the servers were all friendly and welcoming when we walked in. They had a few large take out orders go out in front of ours, so maybe that was the problem. We have plenty of leftovers for dinner tonight, but we may stop by to order some spring rolls to add to it.

Wonderful curry! Fried rice was good also. Decent beer selection-though the local beers seemed a bit overpriced. Very helpful staff, polite, and friendly. Great food-our party of four each had something different. Very enjoyable meal. All in all, good meal - though seemed a bit overpriced. This is the 3 star rating. Girlfriend says "Thai Thai Special Curry" gets 5 stars. But I'm the one writing the Yelp review so, hey.

Took 45 min for soup n padthai to arrive at the table. Poor service! Food was nothing extraordinary, just about ok...and totally not worth the high price items. Just because there are just 3-4 restaurants around you are stuck with this option!

  • Ziggy S.

The food here is very good and the service is great, but the prices of the dishes are astronomical !! Be careful what you order or you will have a hefty bill. Too bad. I would eat there more often but I just cant see paying that much for Thai food.

If you took the time to read through 300 yelp reviews to get to mine you need to stop what you are doing and re-evaluate your life. If instead you are in Volcano, stop dilly-dallying and come get some delicious Thai food ASAP. This place has everything a 5 star restaurant should have. Great food, friendly staff and pictures of their freaking kids on the menu. Do not get spicy unless you want the wrath of Pele inside your mouth.

Amazing. Server did a great job explaining their spice levels. A huge bonus was when we ordered entries with vegetables as the protein option, the server asked if we were vegetarian and then warned us about hidden chicken stock and oyster sauce and have option to do without or recommendations for fully vegetarian dishes. The Pad Thai and Special Thai Curry were both excellent!

Pad see Eaw was delicious and portion was good. The Summer Roll appetizer was very fresh tasting and had a nice peanut sauce with it. Thai Iced Tea was just right size wise. No refill was needed.

This is apparently the only decent and moderately priced (for HI) dinner option in Volcano. It was super busy and service was very efficient. Papaya salad was delicious and super spicy (we had said regular hot, not Thai hot after reading other reviews). This was maybe a smudge too spicy for us, but awesome. Pad Kee Mao was solid, I am not a huge fan of having egg in it, but it was certainly good. And we did learn from their menu that this dish (one of our favorites, is the dish of drunks! Yeay! Green Curry Chicken was also very solid. The main dishes were not spicy enough for us. But it was overall a very good meal. Those guys run a tight ship. They also served pizza and hamburgers for the non-Thai food eaters, which was strange but actually a good idea given the lack of options in the town.

As others have noted, there are few dining options in Volcano, so my wife and I tried this. Decor was 1950's Army service club level. Appetizers were ridiculously overpriced, and adding beef or shrimp to any dish really kicks prices up. My wife had pad thai with chicken which was just OK. I had Penang curry with tofu, again just OK except for the tofu which was the blandest, least savory tofu I've ever been served in a restaurant. I know a lot more about eating tofu than preparing it, but this tasted like what I expect plain boiled tofu tastes like. Service was so-so, neither impressive nor unsatisfactory, but the waitress did give me a good tip. I ordered medium spiciness, and was told that would be really hot. I dialed it down a notch, and the result was spicy and pleasant.

Outstanding - both food and service. Pad Thai worth the trip, Thai basil stir fry was also amazing. Summer rolls? Two orders, thank you. Be aware that if you ask for something to spice it up you are served a chili sauce that contains ghost peppers - a little goes a looooong way. We may even be back two nights in a row.

We were on the way from Hilo to Hawaii volcanoes NP when we came across this restaurant through yelp. We got the eggplant stir fry and red curry, both with chicken. The chicken was of bad quality and we ended up picking and removing chicken, eating the rest. So my verdict is - not a bad option if you are eating vegetarian.

After just arriving into Volcano from a late afternoon flight. I was starving. My wife and I were staying at the Maile Treehouse (vacation rental) which happen to be right down the street. We were debating between the Lava Rock cafe and Thai Thai Restaurant for our first dinner in Volcano. We're certainly glad we chose Thi Tai. They were all very friendly, had good service, nice atmosphere, and good food. I'd highly recommend it, and would definitely go back there next time we're in Volcano.

One of the best Thai meals I've ever eaten. If this is the only place open when you're in Volcano (and it might well be), count yourself lucky. Everything was perfectly seasoned, and although we were completely confused by the waitress's explanation of the numerical spicing system, the spice level seemed to be about right for us across the board. Minus 1 star because it's crazy overpriced.

The food was delicious and the service was excellent! We were in Volcano Village on vacation in June and this was one of the only restaurants open for dinner, which was why we went there, and we were pleasantly surprised. Some reviewers said it was expensive, and this is true, but they served a lot of food. Two of us ordered an appetizer and two of the less expensive entrees and we ate the leftovers for dinner the second night. They also have a kids menu with non-Thai food like pizza and chicken fingers, plus crayons and coloring sheets, so your kids will be happy while you enjoy your spicy Thai food!

Volcano, HI can be quite chilly given it's 4,000 foot elevation and damp climate. If you are looking for a place to eat a warm meal without driving an hour to Hilo, Thai Thai is the place to go. This restaurant is actually a gift shop as well, so you can pick up some cheap memorabilia after your meal. The place was decorated with Thaiwanese flair. There were several large pictures of Thaiwanese children which I'm assuming are important to the owner. The menu also featured these children which I thought was weird. The best way to eat Thai food is to go with a small group of people and share everything family style. We ordered the fried rice, pad thai noodles, and yellow curry. The last two were delicious! They also offered typical American dishes such as cheeseburgers. Entrees were in the range of $10-$15 while drinks were a bit overpriced for the place at $8ish.

Ten of us enjoyed some amazing dishes - green curry, Thai Thai Special Curry, Thai basil stir fry, cashew nut stir fry, ginger root stir fry and pad Thai. The vegetables in all the dishes were fresh-fresh-fresh and cooked to perfection. All the dishes were delicious and each person who ordered thought theirs was the best on the table. Our waiter was sweet, knowledgeable, and extremely helpful when ordering. And our food came very quickly.

We were in the area for 2 nights and ended up eating here on both the nights. Food was just ok nothing bad, nothing great either. However, this is the only choice for this kind of food type. The food was not hot as specified and we ended up using hot sauce.

Went to the volcanoes park for the day. This place was recommended by a local friend. We eat a fair bit of Thai in Toronto and noticed that Hawai'i generally makes it double plus good. Thai Thai Restaurant was likely the best thaifood restaurant ever. The papaya salad is a must. The soups are delicious and so are the curries of which we tried 2. The only criticism was that the red curry was a touch salty BUT that didnt stop me from using a spoon to get the last of it. Cannot beat the price. Cannot wait to go again.

Would be 5 stars if it wasn't so expensive. Shrimp entrees are 26 dollars. Everything else is priced moderately and well portioned. Thai hot was perfect. Staff was friendly and always made sure my water was filled. If you like Thai food this is a must stop in Volcano.

I mean . . . come on. Where else are you going to eat on in Volcano, a tiny strip of a town, shrouded in clouds and rainforest on the side of an active volcano in Hawaii? They know they got ya before you even step through the door. So that justifies the high prices - much higher than anything you'd see in the Bay. $20 corkage fee (encouraging you to drink their really really really bad, ala Woodbridge wine.) Plus, the restaurant is half restaurant/half cheesy gift store, and backed up to a laundry mat. And, although the head of the house was friendly, the servers seemed to be ambivalent/bored/biding-their-time-till-they-could-get-the-hell-out-of-Volcano. So, the ambiance is super weird. If I hadn't already read decent reviews I probably would have taken one look at the surroundings and gotten back in my car. On the plus side, the food was flavorful, hot, and decently portioned. And they had a decent variety. We stayed in Volcano two nights, got Thai Thai the first night, and went back the second night to get a couple things to go with our leftovers! So, I guess we liked it enough to eat there twice. And I ended up buying a Hawaiian-themed dog collar from the gift store . . . so . . . Thai Thai got the best of me. If you are cruising through Volcano with your Yelp app open, looking for a place to get dinner, I am giving you my endorsement - it's perfectly fine Thai food, maybe just take it to go.

The Thai Garlic and Pepper Chicken Stir Fry was delicious. Get medium spice. Also the Pad See Ewe was great. Very good, fast service! Yum!

A divine find. The green papaya salad was the best I have had anywhere. The Tom Ka soup was smooth and a perfect warm up. Spring rolls were fresh and flavorful. Ambiance was nostalgic. Service was satisfactory. Prices are high but they have a captive audience due to very small competition. Will savor the day I return.

Stopped in after a long day at Volcano National Forest. We had stopped at Volcano House but it was way too pricey. We were not disappointed with our choice. Had a great meal at a reasonable price. The Panang curry was delicious with just the right amount of heat for me (between mild and medium). My sons enjoyed their meals as well. Waitstaff were friendly and attentive, though they seemed to wait on us as a community. We didn't have the same person visit our table more than twice.

Probably the second best Thai food I have ever had--the best was in India (I've never been to Thailand). Thank you for putting flavor instead of sugar in my pad thai! Thank you for believing my husband when he said, yes, he really did want his panang curry "Thai hot"! The mango and sticky rice dessert was yummy, although I had to be rolled out of the car afterwards. And I had to take one star off because I felt the service was quite slow at times. Fortunately we were on vacation and not in much of a hurry.

The food was very tasty, and the service was attentive. Be careful of the spice - the food runs quite hot (not tourist-spicy, but truly spicy), but the waitresses will warn you when you order. The food is overpriced though - tofu and chicken is reasonable, but the seafood curries are outrageous. I guess they get away with it because there are limited options in town. In the end, the food is good, and makes up for the steep prices.

So concerned about securing a reservation (unlike the previous day when overly aggressive papaya price shopping delayed us from getting a table at Cafe Pesto) that I forgot to specify main dining room, and we did end up sitting in the gift shop. I'm not sure the "elegance" of that room would have justified the outrageous prices/small portions anyway. I have no one to blame but myself - I read your reviews and saw the photos, but there's nothing worse than real Asians asking prices like this (somehow okay for PF Chang's... is this racist?). The sauce on the green curry is outstanding though, and I've never seen jasmine rice served in a plastic bag inside a straw cylinder before. Only go there if you have to eat some Thai food that very instant. Second day of our trip, and I am beginning to suspect that reviewers in Hawaii are pupule generous - must be all the aloha.

Came here for dinner after visiting the park based on the yelp reviews and was not disappointed. Food - quite authentic which was pleasantly surprising given the location Prices - $20s for seafood entrees, $15s for noodles. Kinda pricey but on par with places in SF and NY Ambiance - kitschy but cute Overall, a great find especially if you're hungry and have a long drive ahead of you!

Good Thai food where you'd least expect it! I'm sure this must be the only or one of the only Thai restos on Big Island and it's suprisingly good! Hubby and I came here for lunch when we were at the Volcano National Park - convenient location near the park entrance. We had the spicy beef thai salad which was delicious! Well spiced, awesome local greens... perfect! The pad thai was average. Taste was good but the noodles were a touch overcooked. I was surprised they don't have shrimp in their noodles and there was a choice of chicken/pork/tofu as add-ons, when usually the tofu is automatically included. Service is very friendly. Prices are steep - for the 2 items, it came to a bit under $40 with tax/tip which is a lot more than what I normally have to pay for Thai food. Definitely a good dining option if you're visiting the volcanoes!

when in rome, do as the romans. right ??? well, no !!! when in rome and as much as you possibly can, people-watch. and people watch is what i did when enjoying my favorite "curried dish." it was delicious and more so was the company of ten other of my friends. during a recent visit to this amazing part of the island, our dinning motives drove us to what yelp connoisseurs suggest is a fantastic thai enclave. thai thai is indeed the perfect place to feel as if in true mode to enjoying thai food. no disappointment in that department. it was just interesting to see how time -- timing is of no concern to those who lead in this fantastic venue. as a group, each individual was properly addressed when taking orders. food was succinctly described when the few questions were asked. it just took forever to keep things going; as a big surprised to all, even the check was delayed quite a bit. go figure !!! no negative markers, when considering this place next. be forewarned however that time is not of an existing concern. instead, be prepared to think of your culinary journey as if taken all in slow motion. and nothing wrong with that. people watching was fun... oh, food was fantastic by the way.

Wow. Amazing. Mango sticky rice is my top recommendation, the lady who makes it uses a special flower extract and it chanes the rices color. Whatever she does to it, it practically melts in your mouth. The mango is sweet and soft. Second choice is the amazing Tom yum soup. Spicy but good for the misty volcano weather. Must try!

Excellent Thai food right outside of Volcano National Park. We stopped in for lunch after finishing up a pretty chilly hike through the park. We were cold and hungry, but Thai Thai solved both! We ordered a plate of summer (fresh) rolls for the table that had the normal cabbage, sprouts, cucumber, etc., but also had pineapple, which was a nice touch. This was a huge plate of food, and we ended up boxing up half of it to go. I ordered the shrimp wonton soup and my husband got the noodle soup with tofu. Very flavorful broth, fresh noodles and veggies in both. The best part was the chili powder our server brought out so we could adjust the spiciness of our soup. It had a slight smoky flavor with a slow building heat - fantastic. One of the best lunches we had on this trip.

Nestled in the woods this place is. I looked up yelp to find my way and was richly rewarded with one of the best decorated Thai establishments I've seen in a while, the service was excellent, and the food! Wife is Thai, so we hunt for the real thing, hopping from Thai restaurant to Thai restaurant. This food was very good and displayed well too. If we go back to this area of the Big Island, we will eat here again for sure. If your in this area, check em out!

Food was excellent, service was attentive and polite. Food was definitely spicy, which we anticipated (mild-moderate made us diaphoretic.. Watch out!). I would rate this place 5 stars for the above reasons, but they pulled a tricky/dishonest move at the end of the meal and stuck us with a larger bill......We had finished our entrees and were quite full. When the waitress came back, she offered us dessert, which we politely declined and asked for our check. Another person brought us our check which was itemized only by prices (not dish names), but we checked it and it seemed correct. We gave them a credit card. Then, about a minute later they bring a plate of papaya and sticky rice with enough spoons for all of us with no other words other than "papaya with sticky rice?", so we said "sure!!" and shared it among ourselves thinking this was on the house because we had not ordered it and because, let's face it, there is always room for some dessert. Then, seconds later they brought the bill back with our credit card but they had added 5.99, the cost of that dish, that we hadn't ordered. I'm all about paying for food/services I have received, but I believe they just thought we wouldn't notice. It left a bad taste in our mouth after a delicious meal. If you eat here, check your bill closely!! (As you should always)

This place was ok. I had pad Thai and green curry. It was pricey. The spicy scale was not like the previous reviews say. Medium is not hot. The food was ok but not even three stars. I think the food is made to accommodate the customers - they don't even use fish sauce which is a main ingredient in Thai cuisine. Little disappointed.

Really delicious Thai food, friendly and efficient service, and awesomely quirky decor. Don't go for wine list (stick with beer). We had dinner here twice, a definite vote for the food - especially recommend the local eggplant and Thai basil stirfry, panang curry, and keemow (sp?) noodles. A word of warning: order a 'hot' curry at your own risk (the stirfry and noodle dishes are more moderate in heat).

Really good food! We had the yellow curry with chicken, the shrimp wonton soup and the chicken fried rice. The dishes were big, more than enough for two people. This restaurant was a perfect meal stop after a long hike at the Volcano Historical Park.

I eat here every time we visit Pele and have never been disappointed in anything I have ordered. The Green Papaya Salad is my favorite and along with sharing an order of Pad was the perfect end to a busy day in Volcano. The Hot tea was especially welcome on a cold Hawaiian evening. Will always come back for more.

The best Thai food I've ever had, and I've had a lot. Try the Thai fried rice (yum!) , any of the curries, and the basil eggplant chicken was my fave. I didn't think I'd find something so good in the middle of nowhere, but we did.

  • Alan S.

Can't comment on the food. After waiting 15 minutes for soup (soup mind you) I couldn't take it anymore. The prices were pretty outrageous too; I get that we are in Hawaii but that hasn't caused that much price inflation outside of areas like Volcano where there are few other dining options. $26 for a simple shrimp curry? The cheesy gift shop adjacent to the store did not improve my general view of this place. If you gotta eat in Volcano I suppose this is a place same as any but plan for SLOW service...

Thai Thai is great great. Maybe it was the chilly weather and the long day outside but we all found the food exceptional and the ambiance relaxing and friendly. The tom ka soup (spelling) was mesmerizing. I couldn't stop thinking about it till we went there again, 24 hours later. Others in our party did the fish both days. No complaints. They accommodated our special demands with a smile.

There aren't a lot of dining choices in Volcano, and after reading the reviews, we decided to give Thai Thai a try. Thai cuisine is veg-friendly, but I did not expect that Thai Thai (is that name too cute or what?) would measure up to our basic Thai food standards. Maybe we were all just starving -- staring into a volcano can have that effect on you -- but the four of us agreed that Thai Thai was at least as good and perhaps better than our regular Thai place at home. We shared a couple of curries (medium, which I found pretty spicy) and a tureen of soup, all fresh and flavorful. Our water glasses were refilled every other minute, and servers were pleasant and efficient. The wait between ordering and actually getting the food on the table was long, giving us time to wander through the small but kitschy gift shop. Maybe I was inured to high prices by the time we got to Thai Thai (it was our second day on the Big Island) but I thought Thai Thai was just a little more expensive than home, ie not bad at all.

I love Thai food, but Thai Thai's is average at best. It's also pretty expensive for what you get. One interesting thing about Thai Thai is that all the dishes are cooked without using fish sauce--I didn't realize that was even possible! I'm not convinced this is an improvement, but I guess if you're cooking Thai food at home and discover you're out of fish sauce it is possible to do without.

One of the best Thai restaurants I have ever experienced. And I eat Thai a lot. What a pleasant surprise. Panama curry... Spicy, sweet fresh crisp veggies. The go shopping on Wednesday and this is Wednesday Maybe that's it. Eggplant stir fry excellent. The rest of our party raved also. Great find in an unlikely location.

The noodle soup here is the best I've ever had. Coming from NYC, where good Thai food is plentiful, this is high praise. The red curry was also phenomenal. The staff is really friendly and they take good care of you. Highly recommend this place!!

Who knew? After trekking through Hawaii Volcanoes National Park during the day, you need a place to eat until the sun goes down and you return to see the glow of the Kilauea volcano at night. This place is a gem -- but get there before 7:00, when it's packed. This place is run by a Thai family (a childhood picture of their daughter graces the cover of the menu -- she still works there, and is embarrassed by it now -- and her brother (strong resemblance) confesses "I'm the son" as he refills your water). Our waitress, Renoo, who has worked there for 2 years, just got her US citiizenship (and she made Mike finish his vegetables from the Thai basil chicken before she would clear the dishes). Tom Yum soup was excellent (we had it Thai hot -- perfect, despite the warnings in other reviews.. Broke out in a little sweat, but no tingling of the scalp.) Special that night was seafood curry with local white pineapple: plenty of seafood (shrimp, squid, fish, mussels, and scallops in a perfect yellow curry). All the veggies were local, fresh, and crisp). Tapioca in coconut milk was perfect desert (after the generous portions, no room left for the mango with sticky rice.) Family pictures on the walls, but they were dominated by the prominent photo of Thailand's King Bhumibol in the place of honor. For about 100 bucks (including a generous tip) the two of us had a bottle of wine, more Tom Yum soup than we could finish, two entrees, and desert, From the mainland US, Thai Thai is about halfway to Thailand. The only way to do better is to fly the rest of the way to Bangkok. Or just come here -- I don't think there are many active volcanoes in Thailand.

This place is fantastic! Completely authentic Thai cuisine and Thai folks running it. The ambience is welcoming and warm and the menu is vast and descriptive. There were six of us, and we all ordered something different. It was all outstanding, but the favorite was the Garlic Pepper Tofu--so flavorful and perfectly prepared! The four different curries were also spectacular, as was the Pad Thai. It is pricey, but the portions and the hospitality are generous. Aloha!

There aren't a lot of restaurants options in Volcano, HI but this one was recommended by the B&B owners where we were staying, so we decided to give it a try. The sweet and sour veggies/tofu with rice was delicious. We also got one of the soups and some mango sticky rice and some poi ice cream for dessert. Everything was delicious (sweet and sour entree was better than the dessert) but we were less than pleased with the service. This restaurant lists that the last seating of their night is at 8:30pm. We arrived just before 8:30pm and received very hurried service with the servers trying to take away our food before we were done and rushing us through our meals even though when we sat down they encouraged us to take our time. I would advise arriving much earlier than 8:30pm for this place. This place is a bit pricey, especially the soup. You'll pay over $10 for just a regular bowl of soup. A bit steep if you ask me.

Great Thai food! We had Panang curry and a garlic stir fry and both were delicious. Be careful with the heat ratings, though. They offer mild, medium, hot, and Thai hot. We love spicy food and tried to order the hot. The server talked us into medium, and it was a good thing. My wife was on fire, and it was plenty hot for me. Good looking out by the server to get us exactly what we wanted. The place itself is also great. Clean and quaint, it's the ideal you would hope for in a small-town gem. My only criticism is the price. At $15-30 per plate, it's a spendy meal. I would definitely stop here again, though.

Great meal that was just what we needed after a long and wet day. I had the chicken and eggplant and my friend had the pad thai. Both delish. My only problem is that the waitress talked me down on the spice level, and I could have used a little more kick.

This place is wonderful!! We had the papaya salad, pad Thai with chicken, and one of the curry dishes (can't remember). All was delicious!! Best Thai place we've been to!!! Their Mai tais are really good as well. Just wish they had this place back in oahu.

  • Doug K.

Hands down the best Thai food my wife and I have had. We have many other Thai places we've liked over the years but the massaman curry here is not to be missed. The Tom Yum soup was different from others we've had but excellent. Probably closer to the real deal. The special curry was also marvelous. Of all things the drinks were also terrific. Prices did not seem all that high compared to other restaurants in the area (see our review of The Lodge). Don't miss it!

They are not joking when they say that "Hot" is freaking HOT! I wanted something really spicy for dinner and got the curry with mahi mahi. By the times I was at the end of my meal, my tongue felt like I'd flayed it. I didn't particularly like the mahi mahi either and it's one of my favorite fishes. The pad thai is super great. In fact, it was so good, I got it for take out the last day we were in Volcano.

  • James R.

When hunting for food by Volcano National Park, we did not expect to find such a great meal as this. They serve, without doubt, the best Pad Thai I've had, and I do like to eat it a lot. The food here was so good that we even made sure our plans on a subsequent day took us back here for dinner! (beware of the 'Thai hot' spicy heat rating of some of their food, that seems to have spiced out some other reviewers) There was a rather long line at the dinner time, although at lunch we didn't have to wait at all. The 5 stars is a lot for the deliciousness of the Pad Thai. However the rest of the menu held its own and, whilst the restaurant itself is definitely not the most luxurious, it is a comfortable place to eat,and the decor will keep you interested.

  • John S.

Passable, average strip-mall Thai. We've eaten Thai throughout the US and UK, and this food isn't bad - it's just not great. Our group had Panang and Green Curry, and Pad Thai. We were warned Thai Thai 'medium' might be too hot, but this seemed no hotter, if not a bit less hot than elsewhere. Green curry a bit bland. Prices about average for any US location. Eating area large and open - almost a bit cafeteria-like. There are few choices in Volcano to pass the time before viewing the crater at night, and Thai Thai will get you re-fueled and ready to go.

  • Gina V.

I really wanted to give this place 5 stars because the people are friendly and the food really is delicious. However, the service was really slow. We had to get up after we were seated because no one came over to talk to us for at least 10 minutes (seemed longer). The food was very slow coming out too. But if you are willing to wait and have a lot of patience then I would say the food is worth it! The green curry was especially delicious.

  • Carrie B.

Great little place in Volcano Village with some of the best Thai around. I was surprised with the amount of Thai in Hawaii, but it's all quite tasty. The service here is spot-on and everyone's friendly, not to mention the portions are huge. Definitely a sharing kind of place since the basil and spring rolls could serve a 4-5 top! If you are around Volcano or the park make sure to check it out! They also have a great little gift shop area that's part of the True Value store, but even if the True Value is closed you can shop and pay there at Thai Thai and they have decent prices on most things.

  • Leslie S.

This place is by no means bad and by some estimates even pretty good. We'd spent the whole day hiking across the volcano and were prepared to eat just about anything, so Thai Thai was a pleasant surprise. We had lovely drinks, and perfectly respectable curries each. The spring rolls were very good and the portions so huge that we could not finish them even though we were ravenous. Not a bad stop if you're in the mood for Thai and in Volcano! It's not as if your other options in town are a whole lot better - at all costs avoid Kiluea Lodge. They're a bit snarly there, and the food there can cause some severe gastrointestinal issues. Take my word.

What!?! Great Thai food just outside Volcano National Park... attached to a small gift shop... and next door to a hardware store and laundry mat? My Southasian husband and I were skeptical... but hungry and most of the restaurants in the area do not serve lunch (or any food) past 2pm... so we took a risk... and introduced my dad to curry and Thai iced tea. We were not disappointed... and my dad actually like it! My step-mom went the "safe" route and got a burger (one of the American lunch menu items). Great price for the food... and you can share your curry, too! The only negative was the service... it took forever to place our order (only 2 staffers working the register and the dinning room... and we were not the only hungry tourists).... but it was worth the wait.

Pleasant surprise in remote Volcano! Staying in a nice Inn in Volcano I originally planned to cook with my friends in our apartment but failed due to missing equipment. After a real bad - non-describable - dinner the first night, my travel mates and I decided to try Thai Thai the second night. Although the entrees are pricey the quality was really good and the service friendly. I tend to order a second curry for the next day since it has the potential to be addicting but finally I was able pulling myself together. As editor of a travel guide I really encourage you not to miss Thai Thai during your stay in Volcano but also have to give you the advice to follow the waiter's recommendation for your meal's spiciness! If you like your food medium hot order it 'mild/medium' if you like it hot go with 'medium' except you are a Thai. Trust me! BTW - make sure you are seated in the main room; otherwise you end up sitting in a souvenir shop ;-)

Both the red and the yellow curry where delicious. A little expensive with 15 bucks each, but guess they have to make a living from the volcano visitors somehow.

Wonderful ambiance and feng shui! The mild chicken pad thai ad a generous serving size. I'm a thai novice- next time I'd order "medium" for more flavor. The masaman chicken curry had flavorful sauce and a generous portion of chicken. However, the portion of rice was quite small. The staff gladly brought a rice refill but failed to mention the additional cost of $2.50. The second helping of rice was much larger than the first. We topped off the meal with hot tapioca pudding- mixed with sweet corn kernels and taro cubes (neato!) and a pineapple margarita. A good find in a small town. Watch out for the rice portions.

What an unexpected pleasure! Volcano seemed to be such a small remote place so we expected only to find adequate food, but instead we found this fantastic little Thai restaurant. We were there on Thursday night and it was packed. Luckily we had made a reservation and our table was made and waiting for us. All the food we had was excellent and the service was remarkable considering how few people were waiting on so many people. We loved the high ceilings and the the pictures of the families on the wall. the The staff was quite friendly. (It should be noted that there was a picture of the This King on the wall so we knew that it really was a Thai Thai restaurant.)

Thai food in a little tourist town next to Volcano Park? The guide books told us to stop here, but I've been burned before - by Frommer's and others. After a morning hiking in Volcano, we decided to go here for lunch. We were definitely hungry even though it was not quite noon. We walked up and Thai Thai was closed. The sign said it opened at 12, so we had maybe 10 minutes to go, but there was no sign of life inside. We strolled up and down the road a bit and I saw the waitress pull in to the parking lot at 12:00. Nothing like being right on time to work. I wonder where the chef was? My first impression of the menu: pretty expensive for Thai food. $16 for Pad Thai and $26 for a mahi mahi curry. Really? Ok, I'm in a tourist town for sure. So we were a little hesitant, but hungry. We were the first ones there, so the waitress took our order quickly. She was also attentive when Robin ordered Pad Thai, and asked if oyster sauce and peanuts were ok. Good thing, too, because she's allergic to shellfish and some oyster sauce actually contains oysters! This may have been the only time a Thai restaurant asked about food allergies, too. The portions were borderline ridiculously huge, which is a good thing given how much they cost and how hungry we were. The Pad Thai was excellent - very flavorful, even less the oyster sauce, with fresh noodles. I had the mahi mahi curry. The curry itself was excellent - I ordered it "tourist" hot and that meant hot - you're left pleasantly smoldering after your meal (note there's an option for "Thai hot" which will likely cause you pain if you're not used to it). I have to say I think the fish itself was frozen rather than fresh, so that was a little disappointing. Thai Thai is in a small tourist town, so for what it is, it's excellent. I know for a fact I can find better Thai food at home, but that was a 5 hour flight away, and I was in the tropics to get away from reality for a while.

This restaurant is great. Despite only getting 3.5 stars on Yelp, since it was one of the few places to eat in Volcano Village, we decided to give it a try and were very impressed. The owner is Thai and the food is delicious. While it is a bit pricey, it is a restaurant in Hawaii in a remote town near a volcano. But the portions are generous, the ingredients fresh, and the food tasty. We started with the green papaya salad, which was a huge serving and delicious. Then we had the beef green curry, medium hot which was spicy and pad see yew with chicken. The curry was amazing and creamy, the pad see ew was tasty but could have had a bit more flavor. Overall, great meal.

One of the better Thai restaurants I've been to, in this state or on the mainland. We had the massaman curry and basil stir fry with boneless beef short ribs with sticky rice. I recommend any dish with the beef short ribs. The Thai iced tea was delicious and extremely generous with the mocha mix. They will even make dishes Thai spicy, but we opted for American spicy.

The special thai curry is awesome! A bit pricy but the amount of food in a dish is good.

We first discovered this place when we were vacationing here for Valentine's of 2010. Like many of the other reviewers said, Thai in Volcano isn't exactly something you'd expect. However, we loved the place. I personally like the decor - you can't beat a painting by an elephant ;P There's lots of gold and buddhas - the typical Thai decor. But what I really enjoy is the food. My boyfriend is the experimenter and loves trying all their curries. I'm more of a basic person and always get the same thing - Thai Basil Chicken and the Spring Rolls, but it's is yum yum good! They serve the local Volcano wines, so it feels a bit like you get the whole Volcano experience while you're there. We like that they stay open late too. We've since moved to the Big Island and now go all the time. It always seems to be pretty busy when we're there. Everyone there is super friendly and we always take some time in the meal to "talk story" with our favorite waitress. It's not going to be crazy inspiring cuisine, but if you are looking for a great tasting, hot meal than I'd recommend Thai Thai!

Delicious Thai Food... We enjoyed the LARB (chicken), the Pad Thai (pork) and the Thai Basil entree (beef) and all were delicious - and all were take-away. Yummy. Would return here in second! Service was excellent - even though I was a "take-away". Love this place.

A little pricey for thai food, but a good option (there are only five anyway) if you're staying in Volcano.

Terrific experience. Thought it would be closed (apparently not usually open on Wednesdays) but was open as they are closing this Friday for three weeks (through mid June). We were seated right away. We ordered the pad thai and mixed vege stir fry, prepared to be medium/hot--which was perfect. Both plates were really tasty; and portions just right. Service was friendly and efficient. The food was so good that we will likely go again tomorrow night and pass on the other four dinner options in town. Highly recommended!

First let me say I'm a Thai junkie and so my par is quite high...that beings most the food was pretty good...definitely a little disappointed with the pad Thai. It tasted way too much like ketchup. The panang was tasty, albeit a little different with green beans and chunky as hell. The Thai basil stir fry was good too. Just don't be expecting the most amazing thai ever like I was or you'll be a little let down. Great great great kona coffee ice cream though.

I never expected Thai food in the small Volcano Village, and this one is actually good and authentic! On a cold, rainy night, I really needed a bowl of noodle soup, and Thai Thai Restaurant delivered just that. I had the beef noodle soup. I liked it, although I would have wanted more vegetables. My husband had the pork massaman curry, which was full of spices. The portions are big, so we had plenty to take back.

I dined at Thai Thai while visiting the Big Island with some friends. We are all huge fans of Thai food, and had big expectations. Unfortunately, what we found at Thai Thai was very average Thai food at exorbitant prices (6 out of the 7 people dining live in Hawaii, so it should be noted that these weren't just ordinary 'island prices'). We decided to dine family style and ordered several noodle dishes, several curries, and a soup. There was nothing wrong with any of the food, but the only dish that was particularly memorable was the green curry. It also seemed odd that they wouldn't allow any sort of special order (one woman wanted to order pad thai with both chicken and tofu) because it was a personal insult to the chef. I realize that chefs can be pompous windbags, but I would expect tastier food from somebody thus inclined. The restaurant does have a nice ambiance, and our server was friendly and helpful. All-in-all, I enjoyed my meal at Thai Thai, but, given options (which are limited in this locale), I would definitely hit up another Thai restaurant.

We ate at Thai Thai twice during our 5 nights in Volcano. We were very pleased with our dinners as they were fresh, tasty, and prepared the way we asked - spicy! I thought the Pad Thai, the Green Curry, and the Drunken Noodles were all very good, while the Fresh Veg Roll appetizer was especially refreshing. The service was attentive and friendly. No complaints here.

The good: We had the spring rolls and the tofu pad kee mao (thai hot) were great. The average: Cashew chicken (medium) was bland. The horrible: We were seated next to some beads hanging from the ceiling. There were no signs posted about the beads, and we received no warning from the owner that these beads were "expensive". At the end of the meal, our one year old pulled on one strand of beads and that strand came tumbling down. We went to one of the workers to tell them what happened, and the owner came over and told us that it would cost $500 to replace. When she realized we weren't this other French couple that she had warned (she had never warned us), then she lowered the price to $200. I offered $20, and she ended up calling 911. The police came and took our statements, and I ended up offering $75, which she would not take. She wanted me to pay $100 without any sort of proof that it would cost that much to replace. She had stated that she had these hand done in Thailand, and she would have to redo them all. Well, I've been to Thailand and nothing of that sort costs that much money. I will warn my friends not to ever eat there (not because of the food), but the owner's attitude. She is supposedly taking me to small claims court which I look forward to having my case heard for my 1 year old.

We loved this place. Really excellent Thai food. Both the Papaya salad and Tom Yum soup were fabulous. We thought the price was reasonable at about 20 dollars a person. It's a family run place with lovely hard working people.

Most of the negative reviews here about Thai Thai have to deal with the service. Well, I'm guessing that if impeccable four-star service is your litmus test for a restaurant, you're not spending much time hanging out in Asian restaurants of any kind. However, if you're absolutely NUTS about good Thai food, you owe it to yourself to give Thai Thai a try. If you close your eyes and just savor the food, you could swear you were in a swanky, trendy Thai place in New York or Berkeley. My wife and I each had the special curry of the day - she with tofu, I with chicken - and it was absolutely luscious! An insane variety of perfectly cooked and artistically presented veggies, and the smoothest, creamiest, and most delicious curry sauce ever (just the right amount of spice - nice!) My son had the garlic chicken and pronounced it fantastic. Based on the quality of the food, the prices were what you'd expect. Based on the ambience, well, probably a little pricey. The place does serve as a gift shop as well as a restaurant, so the ambience is down several notches from what one would hope; and yes, the service can only be rated "utilitarian": they'll get your order, and they'll get it right - just maybe not with a smile and certainly not on the jump. But, it is Volcano Village after all, and not Nob Hill. On a damp, chilly Volcano day, Thai Thai meets the requirements for culinary warmth.

My husband and I dined here after a day of exploring Volcanoes National Park and unfortunately we did not have a good experience. My husband ordered lemongrass pork chops and when they arrived, they were burned. I'm not talking a little blackened or charred from the grill; they were pitch black and inedible. We tried to get a waiter's attention; the first one commented that he was only responsible for the water, the next one said it wasn't his table; neither of them made any effort to find someone who would be willing to help us. Finally, a waitress asked us if we had a problem. We showed her the pork chops and she asked what was wrong with them. I asked her if she was seriously not seeing that they were completely burned. Her response: "Well, what do you want ME to do about it?" I had to suggest what would be the appropriate thing to do and she grabbed the plate and steamed off towards the kitchen, shaking her head. When a new order of pork chops arrived, yet another waitress propped the plate in front of my husband with the remarks "maybe these will be good enough for you!" Needless to say, that ruined it for us. Which is a shame, because the food had great potential; the new order of pork chops tasted quite good and the curry I ordered was delicious. We are neither picky eaters nor expect to be pampered but at the elevated prices being charged here, the service left A LOT to be desired.

Yes, the prices are very high as other reviews say. But, if you look at the price of the other restaurants in this tiny 'town', you will see that Thai Thai restaurant is actually the cheap option! Weird that they don't use fish sauce, but the food was pretty authentic just the same. By they way it isn't Thai Thai restaurant, it is 'Thai' - Thai restaurant.

I expect that food on Hawaii will be expensive, having been here a bunch of times. But this place is beyond absurd, the prices they charge for mediocre Thai food are just insulting ($18.99 for a Chicken Satay appetizer?! $27.99 for a shrimp curry?! Really??). Perhaps tourists from middle America or Europe, who don't normally eat "ethnic" foods, will happily pay for it but where I come from, even the high-end Thai food is still at a lower price point relative to other cuisines. I suppose they feel entitled to gouge people since there aren't many options near the Volcanoes National Park, but neither the food or the service was worthy. After our food was brought to our table, nobody came to check on us afterwards, even after we were clearly finished for a long while. Finally, I had to flag someone down to get our bill. Anyway, we still had a fun day at the Volcanoes and have a 2-hour drive back to Kona so I thought I'd share this tidbit. Now I want to go back to Thailand to eat some real authentic food for a fraction of the price!

The food is very authentic and spicy. I got the Panang Curry Thai hot and it lived up to my expectations. The only other place I had a similar dish was in Thailand. My wife got the flat noodles and they were good but nothing special. Overall, very good food but you will pay tourist prices as there are only a few choices in Volcano Village.

If you are near the volcano and get hungry, go here! This was the very best Thai food I've ever had. (I was told that they hear that a lot.) The prices were higher than my hometown Thai restaurant, but it's so very worth it. This was the best tasting meal during my 10 day trip to the island. Service was very good too.

I was kinda sketch about trying Thai food in a touristy town, but we were happily surprised. The pad Thai and panang curry were both pretty good - both spicy and delicious. But waay more expensive than we're used to. I had a couple gripes about this place though.. They charge you $6 for a split plate. WTF? What if my dinner partner and I weren't that hungry? I think they do this because they know they're the only Thai restaurant for miles. They also sat us by a pretty loud table though the rest of the tables were empty. That said, I did enjoy their food, and they had the essentially Thai decked out walls that I've seen in other kitschy Thai restaurants. I especially enjoyed the wood carving of the elephants mating on the wall. My husband and I laughed like school kids at that one. Regardless, I would go back but ask to sit in a more secluded part if available.

OOOH...spicy! Thai thai tells you they're mild is spicy, and boy they aren't kidding. It's compatible to a "hot" at other thai restaurants. But I love them nonetheless. Nestled next to the volcano "visitors center" and a hardware store in a misty mountain top town, thai thai is one of three or four places to eat in the area. The use of fresh local veggies is apparent and everything comes out delightfully prepared. The portions are small, but often so spicy that you're kind of glad that there isn't more. Too bad the price wasn't a bit lower too. Normally I would lament the heat if this place were in Honolulu or Kona. However, given the persistent chilliness in Volcano, your sweat level is kept down to a minimum. It's a nice treat to always go here and gives you something to do other than just visit the volcano or play golf.

A very good option for dinner if you are staying in or close to Volcano. Comparable to a good Thai restaurant in a less secluded area. The Tom Kha Gai was tasty and spicier than I was expecting, due to the ginger though. I had the eggplant stir fry with pork, the eggplants were to die for. The prices are on the high side if having the dishes with chicken or pork, but in line for the area. The beef and shrimp/fish options though were too overpriced as well as the appetizers, we stayed away from those.

Ever since moving to Seattle I've been hooked on Thai food and have had a lot of Thai food I have loved and not loved so much. My husband and I walked here from the Kilauea Lodge for dinner to get take out. We placed our orders quickly and they were up within 15 minutes. We brought the food back to the lodge and enjoyed our meals out on the back patio. The portions here are very large and splitting 2 dishes is plenty for two people. Definitely check this place out if you like Thai food or want to give it a try.

I've eaten there twice and each time I got sick. I think they served me spoiled tofu each time. The decor is nice and the food tastes good, but it is very expensive -- kind of a tourist trap. And I just can't give a great rating to a place that sickened me.

Quite a large restaurant (with full bar) for the relatively small town of Volcano. We stopped by for lunch in the middle of our visit to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, and were seated and served by the owner's daughter. I had the basil pork strips and my girlfriend had the massaman curry with chicken and potato. Everything was delicious. A great find!

Way better than it has to be! I mean, way, way better!! She and I were visiting the Big Island and trying to score some red hot lava. Torrential downpour for two days made that impossible, but one night we decided to venture over from KMC for dinner. Not a lot of choices. Three really ... and one was Thai Thai. We were early, so seating was not a problem. Best green curry ever! No, I mean it! And my Thai Special was amazing. The sticky rice was very good and I love me some brown rice! Why the knockdown of a star? First off, every page of the menu starts with a lecture (no splitting checks, no substitutions, etc.-- I hate being lectured at a restaurant). Second, they charge to split dishes. That pisses me off. We didn't share, and had no intentions to share, but don't tell me what to do with my food! And lastly, their pricing structure. It actually isn't outrageous, most meals are 14.95 with chicken/pork/tufo, but the way the menu is arranged, it seems like it is a 20+ restaurant at first glance. Ok, enough of a rant. Recap: The food is awesome, way better than it has to be considering the dirth of competition. The prices are actually reasonable considering you are in a resort/vacation/tourist area. And the menu will lecture you. But the food is actually worth it!

This place was highly recommended in several guidebooks, but I'm sorry, if you're in the hospitality business, you don't have all kinds of negative warnings that greet your customers: splitting fee of $5.99, no changes, if you break one of their bric a bracs cluttering the place you will be charged! OK, I could live with that if the food was fabulous, but it was just alright, nothing inspiring.

The best Thai restaurant in Volcano, HI. The only Thai restaurant in Volcano. It is marginal Thai food and expensive. I will eat there again just because it is the only Thai place near the NP. Two Dupas.

Very yummy, this place got 5 stars from me b/c of BEEF SHORT RIBS, which are my favorite. Combining short ribs with either the pad thai or pad see ew was heaven! The summer rolls were huge, light, and yummy. I ended my meal with the homemade ice cream- puka berry (sp?) The waitress said it was basically a gooseberry. Super delicious- creamy, crunchy, and a great way to end a meal.

One of the better meals, in fact probably the best, that we had while in Hawaii - both the Big Island and Oahu. So didn't expect it which made the experience that much tastier! We were starving, having skipped lunch and snacked in the car while visiting the volcano, and so hit Thai Thai at about 5:30pm on a Saturday. We were the second diners but by the time we left, an hour or so later, the dining room was close to full. That should give you some indication of how good it is, while the laundromat attached at the back, should not. Because of the intense hunger pangs, we were a bit piggy and ordered 3 entrees for the 2 of us. Chicken Pad Thai, Basil Stir Fry with Short Ribs and the Green Curry with Pork. All were ordered with a heat level of hot (4, I think, but just one below the absolute spiciest they do) and they all delivered in spice, with slightly varying levels. Basil Stir Fry was the hottest, and I loved it. All of the fresh veggies really made this dish for me, while the heat was just intense enough without being overbearing. The Pad Thai was good, just not at the great level. But not having even had an acceptable one for quite a while, this really took care of some cravings. Now the Green Curry, best dish we ordered, was sublime! Just spicy and tangy and coconut-tinged to make it the best Green Curry I've ever had. All were still really good cold the next morning as well; did you really think I wouldn't sneak some before we set out for our day's activities? To make it simple, go if you are in the area, or even within an hour's drive. It is worth it. And if something on another table looks good to you, just ask about it. At least 2 or 3 different tables did that to us and all thanked us before we left. Now I'm hungry....

My husband said his food was just okay. He had a Thai basil stir fry with beef short ribs. It looked pretty, but he said it didn't taste like much. The food at this place was not very good, and it was way overpriced. I usually don't care so much about the service or atmosphere and don't factor it into my reviews, so my review is based on the food only. However, it is of note that we stood at the host stand for almost 5 minutes before anyone acknowledged us, and the woman who finally did was abrupt and rude. It's not like it was super-busy, either. Our waiter was friendly and helpful with the menu, but not real attentive otherwise. The person refilling water did a great job and was very nice. Our water glasses were never empty. This isn't real Thai food, it's Americanized Thai food, so they use soy sauce and oyster sauce in their dishes instead of fish sauce. This caused a big problem for me because I have a gluten allergy. I could have a stir fry with no sauce (basically plain vegetables and meat with no flavoring), summer rolls with no dipping sauce, and white rice. I got the summer rolls, which sounded pretty good in the description but turned out to be a ton of raw cabbage and a tiny piece of fresh pineapple rolled in a rice paper wrapper. Maybe they would have been better with the sauce, but my husband tried them with the sauce and said they weren't very good. I left the place in tears. It was really the only option for places to eat in Volcano, but I wished we had gone hungry until Hilo. If you have a gluten/wheat allergy do not try to eat here. Even if you don't have a gluten allergy, you can do better if you can hold out until you get to a more populated area.

My husband swears this is the best Thai food he has ever had. I agree it's darned good considering we were. We had the pad thai, chicken panang, and summer rolls - all excellent and such nice portions we were able to save some for lunch the next day.

Absolutely the worst dining experience ever. This restaurant was highly recommended in Frommer's and we decided after a long day of hiking around Volcano National Park that this would be the perfect place to fill up. We were starving and it was among the only restaurants open in the entire village. Note to all tourists, STAY IN HILO! It has far more restaurants and it's within easy driving distance to the volcanoes. In addition, anyone trying to late night a dinner in Volcano Village is going to be sorely disappointed with the choices as virtually nothing will be open. We get there and there is a long wait to be seated. The place is busy and we don't think anything of it. After a 30 minute wait, we're seated. We go through the menu and pick out what we'd like. 10 minutes later, no waiter. 20 minutes later, we wave one down and it was hard to do despite the smallness of the space. In the meantime, we notice we're not the only people being ignored as we observe others being seated around us, some served right away, others ignored. We order our dinner. 45 minutes later, no dinner. We flag down a waiter twice and he goes to check our meal, but never returns with an answer. Instead, he comes out with food for other customers. People seated AFTER us on either side are not only served but are DONE eating and we still don't have our meals. One local next to us with whom we were sharing elbow space apologizes to us about the lousy service. Not only has he and his dinner partner been served, they've paid for their meal and new customers are being seated. 60 minutes later, no food, we get up and leave. The only reason we even waited this long is because we were so hungry. The guy at the front looks astonished and asks us, "Have you ordered your food?" We both look at him, and say, "Yes, an HOUR ago," and walk out the front door. By this time, everything else is closed. The sorriest excuse for a restaurant I have had the misfortune to try in a LONG time. How in the world could they have ignored two people in a restaurant that only seats 10 couples at best?! We were so jam packed in there it absolutely had to be deliberate. We had done nothing but be courteous. We did not yell, we waited, we waited, we talked to people on either side of us, and never were we served. I will never try this restaurant again nor ever recommend it to anyone else. Some of my friends have speculated that we were ignored because we were a mixed race couple. If so, that makes this restaurant an even bigger stinker than it already is. However, I can't say that was the cause. I just know it was the worst service of any restaurant, bar none.

We had dinner after spending a whirlwind day visiting HVNP and Kalapana, so we wanted something warm and hearty to dine on. My bf ordered the chicken pad thai with medium heat and I had the chicken pad see ewe. The pad thai was awesome, it had great flavor and just the right amount of heat. My pad see ewe was ok, it was a little watery in texture. It's a nice change of pace from the other restaurants in Volcano Village.

DELICIOUS Thai food. I was with a party of three and we all ordered different dishes with varying levels of spice. My husband, a spice masochist, ordered "hot" and as the menu (and waitress) warned, they do not skimp on the heat. On a scale of one to ten, their "hot" is a 12. My husband loved it. We all devoured our dishes. They also seem to be open later than most of the eateries in Volcano so if you are visiting the volcano park, this is a good place to try if you are getting back a little later.

I found this restaurant listed in a couple places when planning my vacation. WOW!!! This restaurant is awesome. We ordered a dish we recognized the ingredients...chicken thai basil or something and also the Masamon (sp) curry, which we had not tried before. They were both so good. Once we get home, we plan to do some more exploring with curry dishes.

This is probably one of my favorite Thai restaurants I've been to, too bad it's so far from me! We ordered the tom yum koong (delicious and warming for that night), and a curry with green papaya and chicken (I forgot which one, green?), and pad thai. I liked how they brought out a "spice rack", for groups that had different spice tolerances for their food. I enjoyed everything we ordered, and the leftovers made a good breakfast for my husband in the morning. I do think the prices are a bit steep however, $25 for mahi-mahi curry seems excessive, which is why we stuck with chicken. But in general, food in Hawaii restaurants seem more expensive than in the mainland.

I eat a lot of Thai and didn't expect much in the middle of a Hawaiian rain forest. Turned out the food was quite good authentic, though you might ask for a bit more heat. The service was also fast and pleasant. Why 3 stars? The price for each entrée was not only high, but they wanted $6 for sharing food family style. Another Big Island gouge.

Better than any Thai food I've had in the Boston area and by the way I lived in Thailand for awhile so I'm a bit particular! I was pleasantly surprised by the taste, the quantity (which as others noted was fair given the prices), and the spiciness. Normally when I say hot, I get mild (I'm a white girl) but here hot actually meant hot! Atmosphere shared with True Value hardware is a bit weird, but the area is rather rural, so fair enough. Only real complaints are 1. No nom pla (fish water)... what's up with that? How do you have Thai food without nom pla? and 2. No substitutions. This seems to be a Hawaiian thing but really it is weird. If I want tofu instead of pork, who cares?

There are about 5 legitimate dining establishments in Volcano. I spent 2 nights in the town and ate at Thai Thai both times. So while this review does not give a comparative nod to any other options, it fully backs the delightful experience that is Thai Thai. So good, I ate there consecutively. Location: You'll find Thai Thai about halfway down the stretch of Old Volcano Road. It's connected to the True Value hardware store and an old laundromat, one driveway after the General Store. Talk about quaint. Timing: Restaurants in Volcano stop seating around 8:30pm. So get there before the witching hour. Experience: Thai is my favorite cuisine and I eat it regularly at home in NYC, so I was more than a bit excited to try it off the beaten path. We arrived dripping wet and covered in dirt from the day's trek through the nat'l park, but the proprietress wasn't phased. A polite hostess sat us at a large rectangular table for 3. There are about a dozen tables in the 2-story room that is warmly decorated with photos and shiny Thai cultural bric-a-brac from the owner's personal collection. There was also a full bar and an attached sundries/souvenirs store. Needless to say, it looked like heaven to a group of scraggly travelers. Food: Easy on the palate with a homemade appearance and taste. I ordered my usual Tom Yum soup (I've sampled it around the globe) and the Masaman curry with jasmine rice. The Tom Yum arrived steaming hot and in a large enough vessel to serve 3 or 4 cups. The 3 of us ended up sharing it. Ingredients were fresh and mixed in a homemade style rather than the foodie style you sometimes see in NYC (sliced regular mushrooms instead of whole shitake for instance). The curry was deliciously smooth and the chicken was well pieced. A very satisfying end to a tiring day of hiking. The following day, I ordered the same dishes and then sampled a vegetable stir fry as well. All scrumptious and filling. Things to note: The warnings about price are true. It's not cheap Thai food. The warnings about portion size are true. They are deliciously large! Entrees can feed 2 people, though there is a split plate cost. The tom yum soup is like $14, but that's because it feeds/waters about 3 people (rather than your usual 1-person serving). Again, get there before 8:30pm. The proprietress clearly loves her restaurant and tends to your needs with a surprisingly dry wit. Great hometown experience.

Great! Things on the big Island close pretty early so we had little choice as this place was close and we were staying a block away in Volcano. We hit this place after a 7 mile hike through Volcano National park. I got the Green curry, Native hot, my wife got the obligatory Pad Thai, Both were AWESOME! Mine was hot and spicy but full flavored, the Pad Thai was peanutty goodness, I got a beer, my SO got a Lava Flow, which I would recommend, a Pina Calada with strawberry, good, good!

There aren't a lot of choices in Volcano. With that said, the Thai food here is excellent and definitely comparable to the other good ones I've had. The vegetables in the green curry can be considered odd though - but still quite yummy! A few tips - definitely get there early. Not too many choices in the area and places close early. Or call ahead for take out - at least you don't have to wait there.

Delicious food. More expensive than one might expect to pay for a similar dish somewhere else. A curry with tofu is 14.99. A curry with shrimp is 24.99 (really?). Anyway, you're in the middle of a rainforest and there are about 3 choices for dinner. We enjoyed it and would go back!

when visiting the Big Island there are a few things you need to do - see the volcano and lava tubes, spend some time on the black sand beaches, and stop at Thai Thai in Volcano. While there are very few options for food in Volcano - Thai Thai is the only place you need to go. The pad thai is one of the best and the satay is thick and has a nice spicy kick at the end. So after hiking a volcano all day, stop off for the perfect dinner at Thai Thai! Insider note: Before stopping by Thai Thai after spending the day in an active volcano - please take a shower, i know its Volcano - but it is actually a semi classy place.

Found it by accident, and pulled in...I had the green thai with chicken and it was loaded with great veggies and a lot of chicken! Wish it had more colorful veggies, but was still jam-packed nonetheless. My friend had pad thai and fried rice, both were yummy. The spring rolls were a little different, filled with a ton of raw veggies (I'm used to cooked veggies), but still yummy. A bit pricey, but I guess that's in line with everything on the Big Island...I would go again if I lived there - you should try it!

My family and I ate at Thai Thai during a vacation to Hawaii. We were seated quickly, but it took an abnormally long time for a waiter to take our order even though the place wasn't very busy. We ordered soup, curry, spring rolls, and pork with vegetables. The spring rolls came out quickly (unlike the rest of our dishes), but that's probably because they were boxed and microwaveable. They tasted bland and the cabbage was tough. We ordered the soup with medium spice (our waiter advised against hot). I knew why when I tasted it. The soup was ridiculously hot for "medium" spice, and this would've been fine if the heat didn't obscure the flavor of the cabbage, beef, and other ingredients. Our curry tasted like something out of a can, and the pork and vegetables were mediocre. Finally, the bill for 4 dishes was in excess of 70$. Thai Thai offers slow, inattentive service, overpriced food, and mediocre quality at best. This is a typical tourist restaurant that has little respect for the customer and cooks sub par Thai food because it doesn't expect any returning customers. 2/5 at best

Can't beat the curry here, it's some of the best I've ever had. The vegetables were very, very fresh and the curry had just the right level of spices. The prices were a bit high for a Thai restaurant, but I've said before that you seem to get what you pay for in Hawaii when it comes to quality food. The portions were also large enough that my husband and I were both able to take half our meal home and have it for dinner the next night. We went for lunch and there was hardly anyone there, but we didn't care - we were just hungry after our volcano hike. There aren't a lot of options in town, so this is probably one of the best choices you can make!

I've had better Thai food and better service. Not impressed, ordered the pad thai and one of the curries recommended by the server. Food was good, but not totally memorable. Nice thing is that if you want spicy, you can really request it. Expensive for what it is.

Way beyond expectations. Read a ton of reviews so decided to give it a try. We were seated right away, given time to review the extensive menu and ordered their new peanut curry, pad kee mow and papaya salad. The salad was served in a cute deep wooden bowl and was delicious! Made with Hawaiian green papaya, plenty of fresh lime and a fab sweet sauce - the best I've ever tried, and my husband who doesn't try new dishes often, loved it. The curry was fantastic and flavorful and even tho we ordered mild it still had plenty of bite. The noodle dish was just ok - we ended up pouring the curry sauce over the noodles and devouring it because the sauce was so good. Service was great and plenty fast. Was surprised to see decent California wines on the menu, and a variety of tropical drinks up here in Volcano. A perfect meal really, paired with our own chocolate bar watching the glow from the volcano - a great way to have dessert!

The food is good and the service is acceptable, although it can vary depending on if they are having a rush of customers or not. Thai dishes are authentic and flavorful and can come in any spiciness, including "Thai hot", which can melt your face off.

Loved the masaman curry and the sticky rice, and the iced coffee. Easily as good as I've had in Thailand. The spring rolls though, were terrible. I suspect frozen brought in from a big box store. Prices are surprisingly high for Thai cuisine, but having a meal basically in the middle of nowhere does have it's price.

Thai Thai saved my life nearly 10 years ago when I came out of the volcano exhausted & dehydrated. The Pad Thai was to die for & service was excellent. I was eager to savor their food this go round...being more alert and with-it! We tried the Summer Rolls (at a whopping $10.99) which was enough for 3-4 people. They did not bring it out as an appetizer, but served it AFTER we started our main meal, even though we specifically requested them as an appetizer. There was also not enough dipping sauce...which we later saw as a pattern...skimping that is...On a positive note, the surprise ingredient in the Spring Rolls was pineapple, which we loved! The Chicken Panang Curry w/Jasmine rice was awesome. There was not enough rice for the serving of the Panang Curry, but the blend of flavors made my taste buds pop. Mild heat was more like medium. Overall, the food was excellent, but I was blown away by their inflated prices! Give me a break...$10.99 for Spring/Summer Rolls & $14.99 for Tum Kha Soup...Thai Salad with Beef (one of my favs) was $18.99! Considering the inability to serve an appetizer as an appetizer (no apologies offered), the need to request more water (Hint: when patrons order curry, make sure they have plenty to drink), the deflated portion of dipping sauce & rice, and the inflated prices we are going with 3 stars. The flavor of the food certainly warrants 5 stars, but a restaurant experience isn't just about tantilizing the tastebuds.

Very tasty and authentic Thai food in this tiny little Hawaiian town. Service was a bit variable - but everyone we spoke with was friendly and helpful. The green curry was too mild for my taste as the server was adamant that we wouldn't want "Medium" heat - we would have much preferred it. Our Eggplant Basil Chicken was fantastic and packed some heat. Should you find yourself without dinner plans in Volcano, this is definitely the place to go. Be aware that they stop seating at 9PM - and maybe earlier if it is a slow night....

This Thai food, while pricy is worth every penny. We were staying at a little cottage next door that recommended Thai Thai to us and were very pleased. We ordered the Cashew Nut Chicken and a Thai Iced tea for lunch and were fighting over the last pieces. We even raced back from watching the lava flow into the ocean an hour away to make it back in time for dinner. I've never found myself wanting to eat at the same place 2 times in one day, but this Thai food is unlike any other. If you can afford it, your taste buds will thank you.

I highly recommend eating at Thai Thai if you are staying the Volcano HI area. Great Thai food in a random place! Service was OK, not super attentive, but the food made up for it. Best part about the restaurant was after having a delicious satisfying dinner and a couple of beers, we got the bill, and it was a very reasonably priced. Very refreshing after some of the other expensive restaurants on the island!

This is the best Thai food I have ever had. The lemongrass soup was spectacular - great presentation too. The Panang curry was so rich with great coconut milk flavor and just right amount of spice. I loved this place!

You would not think that there would be such a great Thai restaurant in such a tiny town, but there is! The pad thai was one of the best I've ever had, and I'm from the Bay Area. The curry looked delicious too. Excellent service as well. Prompt and polite. Pretty interior and plenty of parking outside. If you stay in Volcano do not miss the opportunity to eat here!

I've been to Thailand and my family has enjoyed great Thai restaurants from SF to NY for many years, so we consider ourselves Thai connoisseurs. Who would have thought that, in the middle of nowhere, we would find this gem? The food was fantastic and the service delightful. Strongly recommend.

Excellent Thai food in Volcano village. We got ours to go, so I can't comment on the service, but the food was as good as anything I've ordered in LA or Seattle, and it was fairly quick from the order to the pick up. Good value too.

For sure the best place to eat if you are in Volcano. Moderately priced, good service and really good Thai food. Who knew there were be such good Thai food in such a small town. The Pad Thai was fantastic. I asked for it Hot which was pretty hot, but they also have Thai hot. So if you are brave go for it. We also had the cashew chicken which was also fantastic. The Thai Iced tea was up too par. Everyone seemed to leave happy and I hope you do too!

This restaurant was located literally 5 minutes by the Volcanic National Park and it was a perfect break before dark for the Glowing View. This is a Thai restaurant but they also serve kids American meal - hot dog, French fries and pizza for the little ones that doesn't like Thai food. We had yellow curry, it was very yummy, but the portion was small. We also had pad Thai, nothing special and Short ribs fried, it was also ok. Overall not bad.

We were hungry and tired. And desperate to eat at a what we thought would be a decent restaurant. One thing about me, if I'm hungry, tired, and desperate to eat. ANYTHING TASTES GOOD. Ironically, this place still managed to have food so Crappy that I felt like vomiting. It all started when we arrived and got a seat in the restaurant for a party of four. It took the waiter 15 minutes to attend to us ! Even worse...they only had 4 other tables!!! Then they asked us for drinks and after taking our order for ONLY drinks as expected. They disappeared for another 10 minutes. When the waiter came back to take our order for APPETIZERS I asked him to take our order for our main courses also. Out of desperation that he won't return for another 10 minutes. When he saw that we had questions of the items he tried very hard to slip away and by saying "when you guys ready I take yo order". I told him please take orders now and patiently answer our questions. So AFTER we gave orders for appetizers/some main courses, our drinks arrived. (Basically 15 minutes after ordering them). My wife told them I'm sorry but your thai iced tea does not taste like anything like I'd like and I would like to return it. He then said out of fear of repurcussion that he will bring his manager/owner. So we all looked at each other and said "really? To swap out a drink he needs the owners approval?" So guess what. The owner who is a complete idiot, pathetic , and straight up a B word, comes over to not satisfy us but to EXPLAIN why she cannot return our drink. The real bad part starts now. She goes on to say "I have been making thai iced tea for 17 years. I will not return it. It's a cost to us and costs are high especially in hawaii". I swear to God I was going to reach over and throw it at her but I bit my tongue. Then, we decide it's not worth it to fight with her. Clearly this business owner who cannot throw away a premixed old and rotten thai iced tea because of losing 10 cents will rather spend her time to save that money. Forget it. Just keep it. Pk. Next part the food comes... The thai thai curry Mahi Mahi tasted like slimy mucas. The thai thai beef steak tasted like rubber and the pad kee mow flat noodles looked like they had been RECYCLED! Distgusting. None of the noodles looked fresh. So then after discussing among ourselves and knowing they don't believe in satisfying customers we called our waiter back and ordered their egg rolls. THE ONLY THING THAT TASTES AVERAGE. Being very hungry we had no choice. So after ordering it and ANOTHER 15 MINUTES he comes by and I asked him what happened and he goes on to say "I'm sorry I have not got them in yet , you don't want them anymore right?" We all looked at each other in shock and awe that he would suggest that. How dare he! Depriving hungry patrons of a restaurant their order! Finally when we wanted our check , it took ANOTHER 15 minutes to get our check. So all in all we wasted almost 1 HOUR in waiting throughout the night for BASIC expected service. The food tastes like crap, the service was nonexistent, the owner will cut costs everywhere she can, and the employees are afraid of the owner so they will never go out of their way for you. Imagine how many shortcuts the owner takes, like sanitation shortcuts, old food, mold, etc. I don't even want to imagine. I almost vomited at the end. This restaurant basically has a business model that works on getting ONE TIME customers who THEY KNOW will foolishly walk in because of the folks on here who probably gave good reviews on yelp based on the fact that they were either buzzed or had smoked weed before eating here (the only way you can swallow food without any flavor). They don't care about you, your food, their sense of self worth or anything else. I am very dissapointed. Shame on me for going here. I would have been better off eating bugs in the national park nearby. Please save yourself. Please. You deserve a good experience and real food (not this distgusting stuff) when you pay for food. don't come here.

AVOID THIS PLACE - WORST THAI FOOD EVER!!! Worst Thai food you could ever eat!!! This place is one of the 2 or 3 restaurants in Volcano pretty close to the Volcano national park entrance. We ordered the Chicken Basil fried rice and Red curry with tofu which are pretty standard items for any Thai restuarant and there is not much to screw up in these items. The chicken fried rice was very very bland with no flavor in it. forget the spice. It felt as if i was eating plain white rice with some bland chicken pieces in it and a few strands of onions and bellpeppers in it. Redcurry was also unimpressive with not much flavor. The prices are expensive for such bad food. The fried rice was like $16/plate. These guys are just milking their customers who don't have much choice of restuarants in the area.

We had a long drive back to Kona after staying to see the "glow" after dark at the national park and we were thankful this place was still open. Very close to the park and casual atmosphere. It's actually a pretty large restaurant but it wasn't too busy when we arrived, mostly because it was so late. Fast service and friendly staff. The chicken pad Thai was good, just a tad salty to us. Loved the Green curry with chicken. Both entrees were good sized portions. Definitely recommend trying this place out if you're in Volcano and need a filling meal.

Always good only they seem resistant to substitutions, like fresh vice fried tofu. That aside best value and good taste restaurant in Volcano with decades of being here for the hungry. Specials are ok, eggplant and tofu noodle soups are winners.

Definitely a find after a long day traveling to Hilo and visiting the volcano national park. Highly recommended as its really close to the park and prices are a million times more reasonable than the volcano house restaurant (massive premium for views). I had the Thai Thai curry which was delicious and service was quick and fast which is great given the long drive we had ahead of us back to Waikoloa.

Beautiful presentation but average food I had lunch at this place prior to visiting the Hawaii Volcano National Park and I would rate this restaurant as average. I ordered the Thai fried rice with tofu and the tofu had a little strange sour taste to it. At first I thought it might have gone bad but the sour taste was not too strong but definitely tasted weird. The rest of the fried rice was a little bland and average tasting. Other than that, the service was nice.

We had very bad experience for lunch here. The beef in the Tom yum was hard. Red curry sea food soup was much lower than we expected. The worse was their service, no smile and 15% tips were automatically added into the bill. Although we paid 15% tips, it was not worth.

This was possibly the worst experience I have ever had at a restaurant. We were promptly seated after arriving at Thai Thai Restaurant a few nights ago but then waited more than 10 minutes before anyone brought us drinks or took our order. To describe service as slow would be an understatement. When our food finally arrived I took a few bites of my yellow curry and it was not good. The flavor was very bad. I've had yellow curry many times before at restaurants all over the country and there was something wrong with this yellow curry. Because our server never came back to check on us, I waited, hungry, with nothing to eat after a long day hiking in Volcano National Park. After several minutes I was finally was able to flag our waitress down. I explained to her that there was something wrong with the yellow curry and I wanted to order something else. She left to go talk with the manager and when she returned she said I could order something else, but I'd still have to pay for the yellow curry. Of course I didn't want to pay for a meal I didn't eat, let along something I didn't like, so I asked to talk with the manager. A few minutes later the manager, who I think is also the owner of the restaurant, came by our table. I explained that there was something wrong with the yellow curry and that I didn't like it. I told her I wanted to order something else. She repeated what the server had also told us, that I'd still have to pay for the yellow curry. She went on to explain she'd been cooking Thai food for 20+ years and that her yellow curry was good, it was how she always made it, and that she would now throw away good food. I told her that I didn't like the yellow curry, that something was wrong with it. I said I wasn't going to pay for a dish I didn't like. She didn't care. She said if I didn't pay for it she'd call the police. I told her that this was very unusual and that at other restaurants they will happily exchange dishes to make customers happy. She said that she also wanted to make customers happy but again said she would not throw away good food. I told her again, the yellow curry was not good, it tasted like there is something wrong with it and the chicken was rubbery and overcooked. I said if she wanted to make customers happy she would exchange the dish, like other restaurants, and get me something else. She said she would not and repeated again, that I would need to pay for the dish or she would call the police. She was incredibly rude and standoffish during our whole conversation. I was embarrassed by the situation and shocked, absolutely shocked, that she would not try and work something out with me, some kind of compromise even. I am incredibly disappointed with Thai Thai Restaurant and their staff. Maybe because they are one of the few restaurants in Volcano they think they can treat customers poorly... I don't know... But the service was lousy, the food was not good, and their supposed commitment commitment to making customers happy was a sham. While I'm complaining about things I would also add that the decor was tacky and their food was grossly overpriced.

My family and I really enjoyed this spot. Contrary to other posts about the service, we were sat immediately, ordered within 5 minutes, and our food came out in less than ten minutes. I think they checked like every three minutes if we wanted drink refills. We grabbed the chicken pad see ewe, Thai fried rice, and wok broccoli in oyster sauce. Food was four stars. Make sure you ask about their desserts too! Prices were reasonable for such a remote location.

Just ordered takeout. Had the chicken pad see ew and the egglant basil stir fry with tofu. Both were excellent. Fresh ingredients were used. Taste was wonderful. Great texture. We got mild with hot sauce on the side. Good thing because the hot sauce was SPICY! Made me sweat after eating only a tiny bit. For the two plates, it came out to about $29. The eggplant came with rice and they didn't charge extra, so that was nice. It was enough for two of us. Since we didn't eat in, can't say too much about the service or ambience but it seemed fairly simple. I was happy that we got takeout though. Great tasting food. Bit pricey (although for this area, I can understand). You should try it out though.

As promised, we came here eveytime we visit the volcano. The service is excellent. The food is still tasty and quality. We got papaya salad, Pad see eew, and mahi mahi curry with medium spicy. Everything is tasty and fresh! Medium spicy here is more like mild for the thai food in LA. We are glad this place still going strong!

Heard so many good things about his place. Someone told me it was the best thai they've every had so I had to give it a try. Atmosphere: Located at the base of the volcano next to a laundry mat. The restaurant is well decorated but really didn't get to appreciate it cause we took our food to go. Service: We took our food to go to eat at the park, but they were very kind and packaged our food very well for transport. Food: We ordered the pad thai, garlic beef stir-fry, summer rolls, and green curry. Starting from the positives. The green curry was probably the best out of what we ordered. Very creamy and full of flavor also came with sticky rice which I was very delighted about. The garlic beef stir-fry was a bit spicy even though I ordered medium spice. The beef itself was good. The pad thai was also full flavored. The spring rolls were just veggies and the sauce did not have much flavor. A bit pricey especially for thai food. Intangibles: Probably best thai on the island, but no where near the best thai I've ever had. Great place to grab thai but a bit pricey. No other comparable thai probably near by. Would come again if in the area.

Worst stir fried rice I've ever had in a Thai restaurant. We ordered 3 with different kinds but they all tasted the same. Service is terrible. A 15% tip was automatically included in the bill, but hey, I had my water glass empty for 20 minutes without any refill until I asked. Since there are not many restaurants in this area, I guess this is why the lousy place can still survive.

The sever tried to give us the cold seat in front of the door which I refused and they let us waiting for 10 mins while put the other two white folks to a good seat at the side. Finally got my seat after waiting for 10 mins and waited another 10 mins for a server to take order. The waiting is not over yet, we waited another 40 mins after ordered out food, still we r hungry and waiting here. It has cost us am hour sitting here doing nothing, totally screwed up our plan. Don't wanna come back here at all!!! After I finally can't bear this hungry any more, I went to talk to them, I saw that they put 2 out of my 3 orders on the table and waiting for the 3rd dish to be finished instead of serving the first 2 dishes first. What a fucking douche. This is the Thai restaurant I've ever waited for more than ONE HOUR. Also, I told them they can serve the first two dishes instead of waiting for the third one, the male guy was such a douche bag and don't listen to what I was saying. And I finally tired of talking to him, the fucking douche said "U can get out." Who the fuck think who u r. Ur fucking noodle is so fucking salty and ur fucking rice is so fucking hard. I don't wanna eat ur shit. Fuck this restaurant and fuck the male fucking asshole!!! FUCK U!!!

Pretty good Thai food. Had to ask for mild spice levels due my daughter but it was still pretty good. But weird pricing on the menu. Chicken satay appetizer was about $25!! Didn't order it. Maybe I missed something super special about they satay that made it worth the price. But most of the main dishes were very reasonably priced if veggie or chicken ($12-15) but fish or beef a good bit more.

This place was one of the only restaurants next to the volcano park so we went here for dinner. This place is VERY expensive. A plate of curry is $15.99... The wait for the food was so long that we started to get full off of water. When the food did get to the table: -The Thai tea is insanely sweet. -The grapefruit juice was so sour that we had a sip and couldn't drink the rest. -pad Thai was decent, but bland overall -the wok dishes were also not that great -shrimp wonton soup was very un-savory We asked if we could refill our water bottle here since water is free anyways. The waiter said yes and took the bottle to fill when we ordered. After we got our food (maybe 30+ minutes later), we still did not get the water. One of us went to go ask about it and turns out, it was just sitting on the counter. The lady that was working cashier said that it would be an extra $1 to fill a water bottle....with free water. After we ate, we were waiting for the check and even asked for it a few times. Everyone around us even left before us (even though we arrived earlier). The workers were setting up for a big party I believe, but that doesn't mean they should neglect the customers already in the store. Usually, I love Thai food. But, this is not the place to go if you want authentic Thai food. I would not recommend this to anyone. Too bad it's one of the only restaurants around...

Where to begin.....As you've read in previous reviews, this place is pretty expensive. They are located outside of Volcanoes National Park, where there aren't many dining options, so they are getting away with it. Someone in our party ordered fries, and I kid you not, they were $7.99! Aside from the fries, we did order other food. We got the pad kee mao, fried rice, wonton soup, and crispy spring rolls. The pad kee mao and fried rice were pretty bland. They contained none of the awesome flavors Thai food is known for. They had a nice presentation, but a pretty dish does not a good meal make. The wonton soup was just alright and the crispy spring rolls were okay too, but those were the only items we sort of enjoyed. I love Thai food and I was really disappointed in the dishes here...maybe we ordered the wrong dishes. In terms of the service, it was fine until our bill arrived. Make sure you check your bill because there were only five of us, and they tried to charge us automatic gratuity, which they only do for parties of six or more. They said they miscounted, and fixed the issue. Additionally, there is a $5.99 split charge for people who want to share their dishes. It's crazy because Thai restaurants usually encourage people to share and eat family style. This place discourages you from doing it. Oh and if you have kids or craving for a pizza, don't do it. It's essentially a big bagel bite. Gross. It's nice they have the options available because kids can be finicky eaters, but do yourself a favor and bake them a digiorno, or something. In short, if you like Thai food, you will notice the quality of Thai Thai is bad bad.

One doesn't need another reason to go to Volcano beyod the Volcanoes. Yet this restaurant adds an extra bit of spice to an already exciting adventure. It's delicious as well as spicy. Ask for the vegetarian lemongrass soup. You won't regret it - even if it's hot out. You can get the spices at the level you want, mine was a 3-4. I like spicy but I don't want to suffer, this was perfect. If you think you want it more spicy, consider asking for it milder and adding the spices yourself. The vegetable basil I had tonight was full of fresh vegetables and it was very flavorful. Others were at the restaurant who are regulars because they love the food, too. It is more expensive than Thai elsewhere but it's at a volcano so I suppose it's to be forgiven. The staff was lovely. Apparently the hardware store nearby has wi-fi, grab their password if you can get it before you sit down.

Go for the house curry (Panang curry? The one that's a mix) (4 stars). I don't like coconut milk and I kept dipping into my friend's portion. The eggplant tofu stir fry I got was good but pretty average (3 stars).

Love this place. The food is delicious. We had two orders of spring rolls, the shrimp pineapple fried rice special, green curry pork, eggplant chicken basil stir fry, and wide noodle beef short rib for our party of six. Each dish shared family style was distinctive and so flavorful. The service was prompt and lovely. The price point was great. I definitely want to go back once more before we head home to the mainland in a few days. (There are only so many plate lunches I can eat.) We're from San Francisco where there's no shortage of great Thai restaurants. This rivals any of the best back home. Get there early. The place fills up quickly after six.

After a "meh" experience at Kilauea Lodge the previous night, we were weary of trying another "highly recommended" restaurant in Volcano. We figured, there are such limited choices out here, people will eat anything. But we were pleasantly surprised. Service was great and the food was AMAZING. We're big fans of Thai food so we didn't have high hopes for this place on the top of a volcano in a tiny village. But the Panang curry and the noodles we got were outstanding. Now when we go to our favorite Thai restaurants in Chicago, we reminisce about Thai Thai in Volcano and how excited we are to go back one day.

The shrimp wonton soup the exact one from Costco frozen section. $12 when they bought it for $2. Puh-leeezeee. They just added a few pieces of veggies. I could have done it myself and open a restaurant. The tom yum soup is good... If u like broth with many pieces of lemongrass and ginger, not much else in terms of veggies and chicken that I ordered. Unfortunately, the only place with edible food after a day at Volcanoes National Park.

Thai food being my favorite, I'm always on the hunt, but with such low expectations. After a long day, I was ready to take my chances, but this turned out to be THE best thai food I've ever had - after trying a few hundred places! The place is family run, with great service. But the rest of my curry has just two words - SOUP & CURRY!!! They serve the soup in a ceramic bowl over a burner. Their Tom Kha was just perfection. So was their Panang curry! Generous portions, amazing flavors, right thickness, pure awesome! We put this place to the test when we decided to return the next day but with really high expectations. The pad thai was so good! And their specialty curry!

Very close to Volcano National Park. Came here for dinner. Had chicken satay, but it wasn't skewered like we normally see. It was just served sliced on plate. Had a variety of food. It was ok.

The food was tasty. Had the Thai basil stir fry at #4 spicy. It was spicy!!! They re-made it for us. But if you like spice - go for It. Service was great. We also order the Summer Rolls which were sooooo great. And so fresh.

We loved this place. After reading reviews, we ordered tom yum( sorry if that's misspelled), summer rolls, then on our own accord, the local eggplant basil. Wow, food was delicious. Yes, pricey, but we're out in the middle of nowhere. My husband even enjoyed the thom yum. Service was excellent. Food was light the way I believe thai food is intended and flavorful. We prefers mild because I read that their food was spicy and my hubby did not reach for the extra sauce, so much flavor. Worth every penny.

Like many others, we came here because it was one of the few places that was open for dinner near the Volcanoes National Park. So in a way, beggars can't be choosers. But that's no excuse for overpriced food and sub-par service. Let me explain. My wife and I came to order take-out dinner, since it was one of the few places still open for dinner in the area. I ordered Green Curry with Chicken. My wife got the Broccoli with Chicken. I'll start with the things I liked. The Green Curry was actually spicy (I ordered it medium, and it was hotter than medium, which was fine by me - I like spicy stuff). They had pumpkin in the curry, which is a huge thumbs up in my book. The portion size was also rather generous. However, the vegetables in the curry also included cabbage (Eh, I guess I can understand) and romaine lettuce (As in, cooked romaine lettuce... What?!? No). The chicken was also rather dry. My wife's Broccoli with Chicken also had romaine lettuce as a "side vegetable." Again, no. Her portion size was also reasonable. The taste of the dish was just so-so. The chicken was also dry, and the random vegetables that didn't go with the dish was just off-putting. Ok, but here's the kicker. I could have overlooked all the aforementioned downsides of the food and gave this place a solid three stars. Maybe even 3.5 stars. But when our food was ready, and we were paying for our food at the cash register, my wife grabs a few peppermint candies they had in a basket on the counter right next to the cash register. At any other restaurant, you'd think these are simply free to take for any paying customer. But the lady at the register tells us, "The candy is only for employees to give customers who tip." Uh... ok... awkward. First off, it's just peppermint candy - if you want us to pay for it, then just say so - I'll give you 50 cents for it, whatever. Secondly, if you don't want random customers taking it, then don't stick it in a basket right next to the cash register, where you collect money from customers. Whatever - so we put the candies back. But then the lady says, "But if you really want some, you might as well just take it." What?!? Then why did you even say anything in the first place? And why even mention that it's for customers who tip - what does tipping have anything to do with grabbing candy that's just lying there in a basket next to the cash register?? Are you just mad we didn't tip because we were taking our food to go? No need to go passive aggressive on your customers - it really just leaves a bad taste in their mouths. The food is definitely overpriced for what it is (I still can't get over the romaine lettuce), but the service is what soured the experience for me. The food is actually decent for being the only thing open at 6 pm on a Friday night - there are just a few things you have to try to overlook - and honestly, that's the only thing keeping me from giving it just one star.

This place is a gem! My brother was home visiting from Oahu and we had an impromptu trip to the volcano winery! We wanted to stop for lunch, and wasn't really sure what was available in the area. I am soooo happy we stumbled across this place because the Thai food was amazing! The eggplant dish was to die for and their green curry and pad Thai was on point. My brother got the Thai Thai special curry, and that was delicious and not like any other curry we had tasted before. I would drive from Hilo all the way to volcano just to eat Thai food here!

After a day driving chain of craters road and then the inability to secure a barbecue where we were staying, we were forced to find a last minute dinner spot. I'm really glad my companion was craving Thai. This place is only about 5 miles from Volcano Ntl Park. The ornate decor here is how you would imagine much of Thailand to be adorned and that aided in the overall dining experience. We ordered the fresh summer rolls. By far the freshest I have tasted - the mint blasted through and the addition of pineapple was a fun touch. I did wish that there had been some shrimp in them though, as they came through more like a salad rather than a spring roll. I ordered the Pad Kee Mao and my companion ordered the Thai Thai special curry. We tussled with the waitress over heat definitions, based on their 1-10 scale, with 13 being "Thai hot". I ordered a 5. Pretty wimpy for me, but the following day was a big activity day and I was worried about my innards churning. My companion ordered his curry a 10. The waitress assured us we could increase the heat with a paste accompanied with the meal. She explained the paste was thai, habanero and ghost peppers. For pepper novices out there, this is one righteous pepper paste. It's pretty damn rare to get ghost pepper in a hot sauce/paste at most all restaurants. History break: in 2007, the ghost pepper was rated the hottest chili pepper by the Guinness Book of World Records. It apparently earned it's name because the heat "sneaks" up on you. The food came out quickly and the portions were ample. I ultimately had to add the paste and kick it up a few notches. What can I say? I'm a heat hound. My companion, showing off, swallowed a spoonful of the paste and then proceeded to hiccup for 20 minutes and avoid eye contact. He did thoroughly enjoy the heat rush though. The food was fantastic - my noodle dish had local veggies perfectly cooked (i.e. not over cooked) and the light touch of fish sauce layered nicely with the egg, basil and chicken. My companion had the best curry I have ever tasted. I don't know if it was the blend of spices, the source of coconut milk or the ambiance, but I am positive I have never had a better curry.

What did one reviewer say? "Best Thai food in Volcano"? That's perfect for Thai Thai. There's just not many options for food here that's open late, but if you're staying in the area overnight, it's is a good choice for dinner. I had a good pad thai and an excellent thai tea. It really fills up after sunset (from tourists who had been watching the sun go down behind the crater) so if you can get here a little earlier, you won't be left waiting for a seat. Once it filled up, service did get slower, but it was understandable. It was a little pricy for thai food, but overall a good meal, very filling and tasty.

I would say this is decent food, not bad but not great either. Kinda expensive for a moderate restaurant but considering there are not a lot of options in Volcano Village this was alright. Food was not as flavorful as i was hoping for.

We stayed in Volcano for 2 nights. This restaurant is really your only great option for dinner. And I'm so glad it was. The Pad Thai was truly perfect and the spring rolls were fresh and delicious. Such great service, very large restaurant, and plenty of parking. There aren't many other options in this area but this restaurant is truly great. Don't miss it!

  • Jonathan R.

The papaya salad was average. The green curry too was average, but tasty although the choice of vegetables was awkward (cabbage?). Finally, the taro tapioca was a nice dessert. It tastes more like corn than anything else. No doubt people stop here because it's close to the volcano, and if there were other choices around, I wouldn't recommend it.

Don't waste your time, The atmosphere is campy, and sends a mixed message, on the one hand... There are pictures of the president of Thailand posted high above everything else. First I thought, "wow, pride in your ethnicity, this should be authentic" the food we received sent a different message. EXTREMELY over priced! The green curry was white... The flavor started out sweet, too much coconut milk, probably all that the base was made of, and then the taste of some sort of pepper came through, and then the taste moved on until I took another bite. It also had ALOT of filler vegetables. Carrots, cauliflower, sweet potato, no basil, no cilantro, no green peppers... The Tom yum soup was good, but it had a very sharp/sour ending. Another off putting thing is there is a guy constantly walking around asking to refill your water. Super annoying.

Not a lot of options in this area so know what you are getting. 15 mins wait to get seated. Papaya salad was way too sweet, no dried shrimp like the usually, drunken noodles had tons of veggies ( which could be a good thing if you like veggies) but that's not the usual drunken noddles that I had. Panang's curry was decently flavored. Nothing was spicy, we had to add the entire chili powder container to our food.

I love panang tofu. Thai Thai had some of the tastiest sauce I've had in awhile, with slices of green peppers, red peppers, green beens and a few carrots .... Our waitress worked tirelessly to talk me into another curry dish with a greater variety of vegetables. It was almost comical. She was so tenacious, I nearly ordered what she wanted me to eat .. until I remembered: I love panang tofu! ... My friend ordered the green curry with chicken. The chicken was just right, he said, and the vegetables al dente ... We ate "everything on our plates," and did not have room for dessert. But, who can pass up sticky rice with mango? The restaurant was a little stingy on the rice portion, and to my visual aesthetics, could have left out the green rice, but the flavors were fine... I'll definitely return to this friendly, surprisingly good restaurant. -- mms

We first visited Thai Thai about five years ago. There was a single waiter, and the chef(-owner?) came out to check on us when we ordered one of the dishes "Thai hot" (which was tears-down-face and buckets-of-water hot). It had an adorable hole-in-the-wall feel. Since then it's expanded to over twice the original size with a lot more staff (a little bit of a shock when we first walked in). Not the same homey vibe, but the food is still the best tasting choice for dinner out in Volcano (the green curry was our favorite on this last trip). (For lunch, try Cafe Ono.)

We went here after a day of exploring the volcano. It was just getting dark and a light rainshower came through as we were walking inside. The place was pretty full and we didn't have a reservation but the hostess seated us right away. Man this place HIT THE SPOT!! We had the staples/our favorites: Pad Thai and Panang curry and a Singha beers. I'm not sure if it was because we were so tired or hungry, but this may have been some of the most flavorful and tasty Thai food I've ever had. Best of all, the prices weren't outrageous. If you're in Volcano and want something delicious and non-Hawaiian, definitely check out That Thai.

Yum! If you're in the area for lunch or dinner, this should be your first choice. After a bad experience the day before with another Volcano restaurant we decided we'd give this one a try. (It had better yelp reviews to boot.) The thai iced tea was more milk than I was expecting, so it didn't have a strong tea flavor, but it was good and not too sweet, with that orange color I love. We shared a beef panang and chicken stir-fryed seasonal vegetables. We got both mild after hearing comments about how spicy other tables' dishes were. Mild, as expected, wasn't very spicy so we probably could have gone up to medium. It was really good. Both dishes had good flavors and lots of veggies (mainly green beans in the panang and a great mix in the stir fry). I overheard the woman at the next table say her dish was the best she'd ever had. We were there at 8ish and it wasn't crowed and we were seated right away.

At last a place that takes you seriously when you ask for spicy! Good quality Thai food at "acceptable " prices, (when you consider their competition, and geography) we liked it and will probably eat there again as we are in town, (courtesy title), for a couple of days all in all a good place, good service, and good food, worth a stop.

Who would've thought that you would find such authentic Thai food at a volcano? We have a much bigger selection of Thai restaurants back on Oahu, and I found myself wishing that we had this one to go to also. It's definitely pricy as far as Thai restaurants go, but considering the location we were more than happy to have found this place. I measure a Thai restaurants worth by the quality of their beef Lahb. Get it. It's delicious!

Fair at best, some excellent dishes, others barely passable. A bit pricey, but there aren't that many dining options in the area.

So there aren't a ton of options if you are traveling through Volcano. We stopped in for dinner while we were on an overnight stay in the area. Got seated right away and our orders were taken in a timely fashion. After that, it took over 40 minutes to get our food and another 15 to get our check settled once we were done. There were a lot of people, to the point that there were about 15 waiting when we were finished. The food was actually quite good in spite of the time issue - the medium is maybe what most people would consider medium. I had tofu pad Thai medium spicy and it was very tasty. The husband had a red curry - hot - and it was absolutely delicious. I also like that they take a second to explain the heat range of their menu. Medium is a 6 and hot is a 9, with an option to go even hotter if you can stand it. I like and tolerate hot foods well and I think their scale is right in there but if your palette is more delicate, go for mild and add to it with the chili powder or pickled jalapeños or chili paste the will give you. Either way, I wish I could go higher than a 3 - really good and spicy food but the service needed to be kicked up a notch to match the heat in the food.

I came here on the recommendation of a friend while I was in town visiting the park. We ordered the summer rolls which were fresh tasting with peppermint, but they were not awesome and I would not order them again. The lemongrass soup we ordered had decent flavor, but was a thin broth with mostly inedible roots that are in there for flavor (chunks of turmeric that will choke you if eaten, based on experience, lemongrass wedges that are woody and inedible, maybe 3 mushrooms in the whole pot). For my meal I ordered the garlic and pepper chicken which was excellent. Served on a bed of cabbage with jasmine rice, this dish is a must order. I would have liked to have ordered this with shrimp instead of chicken, but at $25.99 I felt the price was ridiculous. The group also ordered Panang curry, which came out very spicy, to the delight of one and the peril of the others. Be aware that medium spice is quite spicy at this restaurant and Thai spicy is the real deal. The panang was chunky and delicious, a real star on the menu. The restaurant was not willing to accommodate any customizing of the dishes. We were not allowed to add mushroom to a dish. They would not fry the tofu for another dish. We sort of felt that at the price point for our meal that the restaurant should have been more accommodating. The restaurant is pretty large with high ceilings and was very cool inside. We wore coats and were still cold and were grateful to get to our cars to warm up after dinner. Overall we liked our main dishes, but at the price and with the inflexibility we will likely not return.

We ate here three times. One of the few restaurants open after 5 pm in Volcano (--especially on Christmas Eve / Christmas!). Excellent Thai dishes, but also pizza, chicken wings, etc. Good curries. Very good about not serving people too-hot/-spicy dishes and about serving dishes that are very spicy. I recommend especially the "Shrimp in a Jacket". Large indoor seating (about 20 tables).

We needed to kill time before dark, so we could see the glow of Kilaeua. We stopped by Volcano on recommendation of a stranger. Thai thai was our 3rd choice, as there isn't much else to choose from. We were seated and given waters, but then sat waiting to order for several minutes, while our waiter was just standing behind the bar. After looking around for a few minutes, a lady noticed we were ready to order and came over. We were going to order the sweet and sour chicken to share, but were told there was a $6 fee to share. At this point, we left. We prefered to drive to Hilo to Cafe Pesto, an hour away, then to pay an extra $6 for an already overpriced thai joint, who probably owes most of their business to the volcanoes.

I discovered this restaurant when I was super hungry and was sure I wont find any good restaurant close by. This place is just a couple of miles outside the Volcanoes National Park. So, it is a good option if you are visiting the park. We ordered spring rolls, panag curry and white rice. Food was good, a little on the spicy side for us. We usually order medium spicy, but this was definitely on the higher side. Make sure to order to order correct spice level. Ambiance was good and our hostess was courteous and polite. All in all a good experience for a very hungry me!

Mmm, good food! After the disaster Thai we had in Hilo, it was difficult to imagine better Thai in a smaller town. We were pleasantly surprised though. The Panang curry brought us back to the stuff we had in Thailand. The green papaya salad was better than some we've had in the states and the Tom yum was great for a night in volcano. Would definitely go back!

This restaurant was, in my opinion, sub standard. Though the decor is somewhat charming, mainly consisting of pictures of the Thai royal family, I found the food to be average, if not below average. When we came to the restaurant we were extremely hungry, and so the first few bites were very good, but after that the meal went a bit downhill. I ordered the green curry, mad found that the vegetables within my curry were a fair bit out of wack: there was way too muck of what was ether sweet potato or over cooked carrot. The curry itself was okay, but wasn't exactly good. What really annoyed me was the fact that the wait staff was way too numerous and pushy. Within the space of five minutes one of there waiters tried to refill our obviously full glasses three times. Also, there were about three waiters running around our table. It was a bit hard to eat, since we were constantly having to answer waiters questions. Overall, I would give the restaurant two and a half stars, rounded down to two for this platform.

If you are visiting the park, and want some really good Thai food, head back toward Hilo and turn off at one of the roads that goes thru Volcano. When you see the True Value Hardware sign, you've found Thai Thai. We stopped at 2 in the afternoon so there was only one other table being served. The server was busy cleaning up tables from earlier, so the owner/cook came over with a big smile and offered to take our order. She was so nice and friendly. She said she knew we must be hungry because it was getting late in the afternoon. The one dish I always get at any Thai restaurant is Pad Kee Mao with pork. That way I can make a standardized comparison. This dish here is one of the better ones you'll find. Lots of meat and vegetable with noodles. Flavor profile was spot on. Don't be stupid and ask for hot. Mild medium has the right amount of heat and doesn't over power the wonderful flavors. If your want it hotter, she'll bring you red chili paste so you can dial it in to your palate. The menu has all your favorites and some house specials. Whenever I come here again, I will definitely eat here again.

We ordered Red Curry Chicken, Chicken Corn Soup, Pad See Eaw & everything was good, It was the best Red Curry Chicken I ever had! Place was a bit crowded & we had a wait time of well over 45 mins, but the food was so yummy, it made me forget all that. Volcano has very few restaurants, so I don't want to reduce a star for the wait-time. But would suggest order ahead & take-out instead of dine-in.

I wasn't optimistic about this place, but they sure did prove me wrong. This place was legitimately good. We started with some fresh vegetarian spring rolls. I particularly liked the addition of pineapple. We also ordered chicken satay, expecting chicken on a stick. Instead, we got a stick-free version, which was still quite good. I love the combination of peanut sauce and the sweet cucumbers. For my dad, we ordered mild Pad Thai... he's not big on spicy food. Very good, despite lacking spice. And for my mom, we ordered HOT Thai basil stir fry with short ribs. The short ribs were too meaty for my taste, but the veggies, including Kabocha squash, were excellent and packed full of flavor. Definitely worth stopping here for food when up at the volcano!

We have eaten thai food in almost every place we have been to so I would say at least 20 different states. This place is definitely in the top stack of thai restaurants. The food was great especially considering your options in the Volcano town. The service was brilliant, we went for dinner and they kept the kitchen open a little longer for us after we called them. We had the Pad Kee Mao (with tofu) and the soup. I will definitely recommend this place.

Very good restaurant in the middle of nowhere ( at least that's what I felt as a tourist ). Very good food, waiters were polite and helpful. Their yellow curry was amazing. If I visit the Volcanoes National Park again, will definitely try this place one more time.

Best drinks I had I the island!! The waitress that we had was super nice and accommodating - even on a very busy night. I understand they are expanding which isn't smiled upon all the time on the islands, but they were so busy I can see why they are! When someone in my party ordered a drink, none of the rest of us were planning on drinking. That all changed after we tried the Mai Thai! With that my boyfriend was prompted to get a Lava Flow and a few more Mai Thais were ordered in the group. All were sooo yummy and did not skimp on the alcohol! As much as I could probably rate a place 5 stars just for amazing drinks, the food deserves it too. My boyfriend and I still fight about if this was better or Siam on Oahu, but I think this is 2 stars above it! We didn't get any curry here, which is how I usually judge thai restaurants, but I still enjoyed every bite of the Pad Thai (Chicken) and Thai Basil (Chicken as well... sorry to be so boring!). A huge thing for me with Thai food is how the meat is done - I want it to still be moist and flavorful even though its clearly doused in delish Thai spices. A lot of places get this wrong, but the ones that get it right make the dish out of this world! They try to talk you out of getting things too spicy, but I am starting to get used to people looking at me and assuming I can't handle spicy. Don't let them scare you, I was a little sad I did. Just a warning for those fellow spice lovers! Next time I go to Volcanoes National Park... I'm headed to Thai Thai for sure!!!!

Who would have figured that you'd find a thai restaurant in a small little town called Volcano, near Volcano National Park. I really thought we were going to have to resort to Quik-e-Mart food that night, until we drove passed Thai Thai Restaurant. So as soon as you enter the restaurant you'll notice that it really is a authentic thai restaurant. There were traditional thai decorations throughout the restaurant, including the requisite picture of the king. There were also pictures of the owners and their son on the wall (they weren't there that night). We were immediately greeted by the hostess and shown to our seat. The place wasn't too busy, probably because it wasn't during tourist season when we went. The staff there was friendly, but there was only 1 cook, 1 hostess, and 1 waitress, so they were a little busy. The menu had all sorts of thai food. My girlfriend ordered the soup, although I don't remember which one it was. I do however remember that it had coconut in it along with chicken. I wasn't very impressed with the soup, but then again I'm not a big fan of warm coconut. I ordered the stand phad thai with beef. I have to say it was really good. The noodles were cooked perfected as was the chicken. Everything on the plate was moist, tender, and flavorful. The only thing about the meal that could have been better was the price. Apparently when you're in a tourist town things get pricey. If you really don't want to travel far from you hotel in Volcano then this place has some good food. But remember you'll definitely pay for it. For us it was worth the convenience at the time.

Came here about a year ago in Febuary 2011. It was so bad that I made a note to myself to eventually write a review for it, and I finally got around to it. It was the worse thai food I have ever had. I'm from LA, and we have some pretty good Thai food, but even for being in a national park, it's pretty bad. Also, the asian lady waitress ( owner? ) was rude even though the food came out a hour and half late. The restaurant was only half full too. Truly one of the worst restaurants that I have ever been to. Horrible.

Thai Thai serves great food hands down. It is tasty and authentic. I find in general Hilo food places in general are higher. Given there are not many options around volcano village and it is quite a tasty place, I can see why it would justify the higher price. bottom line, great food but it is pricy :( Have I had similar level of food at a lower price? Yes! But again.... it is located in a remote area where you dont have many options to be picky.

What a quirky restaurant! The decor was so random and flashy, I had a hard time concentrating on dinner. The walls are covered in pictures, some of young children in traditional Thai clothes (one of the children actually was our now grown up waitress). They even had icicle lights and Christmas wreaths hanging around the restaurant (it was May, mind you). Once I got over the initial over stimulation of the decor, I could focus on my food which was actually alright given that this place is one of maybe two dinner options in this tiny town outside Volcano National Park. I ordered the Pad Thai (so adventurous, I know) and found it to be pretty tasty. I ordered the dish medium, but the waitress suggested I go between medium and mild as the dishes can be pretty spicy. However, I didn't really find my dish spicy at all. I did very much enjoy my Mai Tai, though. They had lots of cocktail options including daiquiris and margaritas. Strange for a Thai place, but I appreciated the options. We were on vacation after all.

My fiance and I were visiting family during Christmas when we happened across this place. Who would have thought that such great Thai food could be found in the countryside of Hilo, Hawaii? The food is delicious and fresh and is made with care. The restaurant itself is obviously loved by the Thai owners. It is kept immaculately clean and there are pictures on the walls and menus of the owner's family, giving it a nice cozy feeling. I can't say enough good things about this place. Some of the best Thai food I've had anywhere.

We stumbled upon this restaurant after leaving the Volcano Winery nearby. We were so glad we decided to have lunch here. It was fantastic! It was probably some of the best Thai food we have ever had! We both had the Pad Thai, we choose different spice levels and meat selections and were both super happy with our choices! The waitress was very friendly and we had cocktails here as well. :) My husband's plate was completely empty when he was done so obviously he loved his meal! :) They also have a gift shop in the building where we purchased some nice souvenirs. If you are in the area and hungry I definitely recommend this place! :)

Odd thinking of going to Thai in Hawaii, but the food was amazing! Small place seats about 25-30 people and the staff was great. Would reccomend stopping by if your in this tiny volcano town.

Definitely a mixed review... Service was acceptable - friendly, but not terribly attentive. The couple at the next table had asked for "hot" rice (very ambiguous, especially since they had discussed the difference between Jasmine and sticky rice), and the waitress brought them the regular, steamed rice. When she found out they meant "spicy" rice (?!), she handled it nicely, and they seemed satisfied. I would say that the food was OK, but not awesome. The tom yum soup was a hit and a good spice level, but the tofu sateh appetizer was profoundly disappointing. Although it was entrees sized, the tofu was not crisp and was lightly coated with what seemed to be a fairly flavorless curry sauce. The sateh sauce on the side was extremely bland, with very little peanut flavor and no spiciness at all. We also ordered the Thai Thai Special Curry, medium heat, which was good, and the Green Curry, which had good flavor but was DEFINITELY NOT "Thai spicy." I would also agree with previous commenters that this place is pricy: a single serve cup of the tom yum was about $13! However, portions of the curries were very generous, so *shrug* maybe it evens out. Would I reccommend this place? Yes, but with a bit of hesitation. But, this is Volcano, and options are limited...

We came in cold and hungry and paid for overpriced Thai food. There was no shrimp in the summer roll!! We sat next to a working gas fireplace with the pilot light on and were looking forward to a little bit of warmth. How romantic it could have been. I asked the wait staff to turn it on and they said the management does not like to turn it on at all. The manager came over and said that we would be too hot. I told her that we were wet and cold from the rain and night. So, we got to see the owners and their children dressed up like royalty in the photos on the walls of the restaurant but we were cold... The whole time I was looking at the lit pilot light. The wait staff was OK, food slow... ; the management was truly uncaring. I will never go there again and warn others not to go as well.

I'm surprised by the quality, big portions, and good service. I thought I was going to eat junk while camping at the volcano national park but I ate like a queen thanks to the great food here.

Delicious typical Thai dishes. We shared several entries and the portions were generous. Cozy decor and pleasant atmosphere. After being a tourist in Volcano's park, dinner here is a great way to end the day.

Thai Thai is a great small restaurant to experience while on the Big Island. The prices were a little high though... Tried out five different dishes Yellow Curry with Chicken, Flat Noodles with Chicken, Shrimp Fried Rice, Papaya Salad, and a vegetable stir-fry. My favorite ended up being the Shrimp Fried Rice. The Yellow Curry was excellent and spicy with large pieces of potatoes mixed in. I would say the largest portion was the flat noodle with chicken plate. All of these choices were very mild in spice with the Yellow Curry being the most spicy. After the main courses we had a family size serving of Pohai Berry, Ohelo? berry, and kona coffee ice cream. They were all tasty, however the Ohelo berry ice cream had whole real berries mixed in it.

My husband and I made a last-minute decision to stop here for a late lunch (we had hiked at HVNP in the morning and were trying to kill time so we could catch the volcano after the sun went down). What a good choice we made! At first we were leery of the high prices, but both of our meals were so good! This really is a hidden gem. I ordered the Thai Basil Stir Fry (with jumbo shrimp), which says on the menu is one of their specialties. And no wonder. It was delicious, and so nice to get lots of vegetables when you're eating out tons. My husband ordered the Mahi Mahi Curry, and he also loved his dish. We were in Maui and the Big Island for a little over a week, and these dishes were some of our favorites of the entire trip, if not our favorite. We also got the Thai sweet rice with mango, as well as coconut ice cream for dessert. Both were good, but our main dishes are really what stole the show. The service and ambience were also great, and it was interesting to see the restaurant patrons from all over the world. We will definitely visit this restaurant again if we find ourselves back at HVNP!

The place is located in Volcano village so you don't get a ton of choices. However, this is darn good Thai. Had the green curry (hot) and it was delicious. Prices are what you would expect ($15 lunch) for its location. Only knock was the service. Seems they are bit understaffed and was slow.

Came here last night by lack of options and good yelp reviews. Came back again tonight for dinner. The food is excellent! Just be warned that the food is spicy. I like spice so I got medium/high. It was hot. I still really likes it, but too much for my husband. Tonight I got medium/low. That still has a lot of kick, but easier to handle.

Was impressed by the quality of the service and the quality of the food at this remote Thai bastion. We ordered all colors of curry and all were excellent. The food was fresh and enjoyable. The summer fresh rolls came with a nice pineapple twist to remind you of your Hawaiian location. All the curries that we ordered were spiced appropriately as indicated from mild to very spicy. Service was quick and very friendly and included a basket of toys to help keep our young one busy. We were pleasantly surprised at how delicious and enjoyable our lunch was here for a quick stop off a remote highway. Would recommend highly for anyone passing by or staying near Volcano.

I wanted to just drink the thai thai coconut curry broth. It is coconut and peanut sauce and pretty much tasted like heaven in a bowl. The veggies were delicious in it and I would wholeheartedly suggest it and visit there again. The pad thai was also good and the service was excellent.

I don't usually write reviews but had to for this little joint. Super good Thai and nice service. I would definitely come back if I had the opportunity.

Overpriced and underwhelming. Not many food options after hitting up Volcanoes National Park so they can get away with higher prices and people will pay because they're hungry. I thought this place was going to be good based on the reviews so I was ok with paying $17.99 for a vegetable stir fry with beef short ribs and $12.99 for the chicken fried rice (for the little one) but then I tasted the food. You have failed me yelp. Not much flavor in either of the dishes. The hot sauce helped but Thai food is supposed to have complex, depth of flavor to their dishes. It could have been more authentic. I've been to Thailand and am from the SF Baby Area and there is definitely better Thai food out there.

Hey I like to eat big. Portions are filling. What impressed me was the children's menu...only had a few items yet should cover even the pickiest of eaters. Quick service and super clean bathrooms.

Stopped here after a visit to the volcano. I had the Thai Thai special curry and it was delicious! My boyfriend had the pad thai and thought it was very tasty. I had a piña colada which was yum. Would definitely recommend- good service and good food!

My ginger chicken with veggies had plenty of flavor and zip, although it could have used more chicken. The chicken was overcooked and too dry, and had lost its tenderness. My jasmine rice was a bit too mushy and wet. There were plenty of veggies, and I enjoyed the crisp texture of the veggies. This Thai restaurant in Volcano was better on my previous trip several years ago. Now the quality of the food isn't as good, and they have added things like pizza and hamburgers to the menu to attract more customers. I'm not sure if this restaurant will still be around when I return to visit this island in a few years, unless they improve the food a bit and figure out how to attract more customers. The staff was attentive and friendly. The atmosphere feels like a Thai restaurant combined with a family hot dog joint that is having an identity crisis.

It's pretty unusual to find a traditional Thai restaurant that serves pizza, a quarter pounder with cheese, hot dogs, and fried chicken. Thai Thai restaurant is none of those unusual places! That should have been a warning, but we were hungry... The good: The food is OK The portions are large The service is good and friendly. The bad: The food is Only OK The ambiance is not great They serve hot dogs and pizza Thai Thai used to be packed. But ever since the Volcano House opened again, the crowds have been spotty. We had no trouble getting a seat at 6:00 on a Saturday night. If you have a hankering for Thai food and are up in the park, this is the only place for you.

I used to eat here with my family when I lived in Hawaii about 10 years ago. I'm still dreaming of their Pad Thai. It was the best dish I've ever eaten. It makes every other Pad Thai I've eaten taste like cardboard.

0/10 would not come again. The food was so-so, but they make it pretty spicy if that's what you fancy. So there's that. We waited an hour for a soup and a curry with almost no attention or even updates or apologies. In addition to being very inattentive our server was, well, awkward. On the rare occasion she did pass our table she made odd comments which we really couldn't decipher as anything but bizarre passive-aggression. We were told this place was really good but sadly that just wasn't our experience.

Stopped here after yelping the restaurants in the area for somewhere that wasn't insanely pricy and still open, it was kinda late. We didn't have to wait for a table, which was nice, but service was just horrible. It took about 10 minutes to get water, another 25 minutes to get our drinks (2 cokes) and another 10 minutes after that to get food. I see others said their service was prompt, so not sure what the deal was. They were busy, but still, we saw several people standing around just waiting for orders to come out and deliver them. And the server wasn't very friendly, never came back to refill drinks (someone else did refill the water) and never came to see if our food was ok. A lady did come around and ask us how things were going, when we were almost done though. Guess we should have complained at that point but didn't see the point because we were almost done. The food was good. Hubby ordered the pad thai, which he liked and I thought was ok, but not great. I had the sweet n sour chicken which was a little more sour than sweet and a very thin, almost runny type of sweet/sour sauce, which was a little different than I'm used to. It was very good and a unique taste, which we both liked. The price wasn't horrible, $13 per dish, but considering the area didn't feel it was too bad. If you can get over the cheesy decor (tulle wrapped around everything) and possibility of very slow service, than this is a great place to eat.

Amazing Thai food in what seems to be the middle of nowhere on our trip to volcano national park. We shared the pork bun appetizer (yummy but a little expensive for what it was), massaman curry (omg, so fragrant and prob the best dish we had), pad Thai (good and authentic), basil stir fry veggies and Tom yum noodle soup. There is a surcharge for sharing plates, unless you ordered number of plates is at least the number of ppl in your party. Plates are a little on the pricier side. Would definitelyinely come back if I was in the area. Very awesome and authentic Thai.

This food was A-OK, just like the three star rating says. I would probably give it a four, if they had trusted that I did, indeed, like spicy food, and had not told me that their Hot was REALLY HOT, and that I would want it down a level, even after I told them that I really do eat very hot food. My food came out with no discernible heat to it. The flavors were good, but it was expensive, and when I'm paying that much for Thai food, I would at least like it to have some kick! The service was good, as well as the ambiance. Apparently our doppelgangers were in the night before, as a server came up and thanked us for coming in again, and was confused when we told her it was our first time in.
